The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center serves as both an outdoors performance center & a botanical garden. The site is designed to exemplify the harmony between the contradicting ideas of a rigid, formal, & orderly performance space versus a fluid, informal, & wild botanical garden in tribute to Apollo & Dionysus, the Greek gods who fathered drama & theatre.

Planting is an art form that combines elements of painting & sculpture with the passage of time. Its art relies on creating harmonies & contrasts with color, form, & texture of plants. In much the same way a sculpture can be viewed from many vantage points, the pest planting designs are multi-layered compositions that provide a succession of stimulation year round. A designer’s skills as an artist are in the selection & placement of plants that are appropriate to the environment & breathe life into the design.

The design for the deck originated through a process of folding and layering pieces of paper in order to determine the angles and position of the various platforms and smoothly transition visitors through the space in a playful manner that responds to and takes advantage of the site and its surroundings.

Over the years the stream in front of the Forest Heights, MD community center has been shifted, channelized, and forgotten. All the surroundings businesses have turned their backs towards the stream and residents are barely aware of its presence. Water is a natural resource that should be cherished, celebrated and enjoyed. As part of the Forest Heights Stream Walk the community’s focus has been shifted back onto the stream and the community center. The design of the stream corridor works to create a less severe bank slope, provide for storm water management and human experience through a combination of both built and natural materials and processes.
