Japanese car manufacturer Subaru is hoping to tighten its grip on the Omani car market and open itself up to a whole new audience when it launches its brand new Legacy and Impreza Sti models in Oman later this year. With Oman already the biggest market in the Middle East for the brand, Subaru hopes to expand its share in the country after the launch of its new models, by targetting a new market and improving its image. The new top of the range Legacy, which features the company's idiosyncratic Boxer engine, developed in-house by Subaru, has a 3.6-litre engine which generates 256 horsepower and can hit 100km in around 5.5 seconds. Yet despite this, the latest incarnation provides a serene ride and combines smooth handling with improved fuel economy, managing 40km to the gallon. Building on its recent rally heritage, the latest Impreza WRX Sti represents a shift in styles in the motor sport. As the days of drifting round corners sideways are replaced by drivers picking straight lines through corners, the new Sti is a car that can be thrown into corners without much fear of spinning out. Managing 35km to the gallon,
the 2.5-litre GT engine generates 265 horsepower, in addition to reaching 100km in 4.5 seconds. Speaking exclusively to Muscat Daily at the launch of its new models in Bahrain, Yasushi Nagae, the general manager of the Subaru CIS, the Middle East and Africa sales department, explained that Oman's terrain makes it the perfect playground for the cars. “I think the market in Oman is doing very well. We have a 2.5 per cent market share in Oman, which I feel is a very suitable market for Subaru because you have a lot of long roads and mountainous areas.
“Some kind of stability and reliability is important for the Omani customer. In the Middle East, Oman holds a lot of potential for Subaru as a market, where the Legacy and the Forester are the most popular models.” Subaru needs to open itself up to new audiences and improve customer service if it is to improve its image and popularity in Oman, he added. “We have the new Legacy, but we need a driver to lift our brand's image and create a new market. I think it will be successful because we have some good dealers and some good customers. The basic image of Subaru is not bad, but
we need to improve it. “We have to make some efforts to enhance our customer satisfaction. With this, we have to make some developments in dealing with customers and in the near future we can make adjustments to our products for customers. This will make our customers even happier.”
