LA HI-‐TECH is a grant the purpose of which is to develop a career pathway from high school to community college and beyond in the field of Information, Technology and Communication. In addition to the educational opportunities it affords its students to, for instance, to earn college credit for work done in high school, the career pathway also seeks to provide work based learning opportunities for these same students to accomplish two aims. The first is to engage the students in work in and out of the classroom that mirrors the tasks and occupations these students are curious about. Many studies have shown (http://www.gse.harvard.edu/news/11/02/pathways-‐prosperity-‐meeting-‐ challenge-‐preparing-‐young-‐americans-‐21st-‐century) that students are more likely to stay in school if they are engaged in activities that reflect the real world of work. The second aim of providing work based learning opportunities is to give students the skills necessary to compete successfully in the ICT workforce and provide qualified entrepreneurs and employees for industry so they can hit the ground running in their career at whatever level they seek. Having industry partners who help shape curriculum and provide out of class experiences such as job shadowing, mentoring and internships helps students in experiencing the day to day reality of a particular occupation and make an informed decision about whether a career in ICT is right for them. We would love for Google to be a part of this endeavor.
