BRAND VALUE n the 2014 BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands survey, Toyota was identified as the world’s most valuable automotive brand – the seventh time in nine years that Toyota has been crowned king. This year, Toyota’s brand value jumped by 21%, compared with an average of 12% for the rest of the world’s top-100 brands. EVEN MORE PRAISE On a recent visit to KZN my faithful Hilux Legend 40’s fuel light remained on. I suspected I needed a new fuel filter. My dad was a Toyota employee for more than 30 years (he retired in 2010) and always raved about the service he received from Halfway Malanda Toyota, to the extent that all his Toyotas were purchased and serviced at this dealership in Widenham, near Umkomaas. Being the Gauteng-aleng I have become, I found this quite strange because this dealership was 40km away and there are loads of other dealerships that are closer by. After a call to Halfway Malanda Toyota we were asked to bring in the vehicle. To cut a long story short: my vehicle was sorted out within 20 minutes and the service was outstanding. Gamkaberg is one of the most species-rich environments on the continent. While it is considered a relatively small nature reserve in the Little Karoo, Gamkaberg forms a vital part of the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere. Most of Gamkaberg’s conservation efforts go into preserving the natural ecosystem – achieved through the work of the reserve staff – as well as creating jobs within the local community.

The Gamka mountain range takes its name from the Khoisan word gami, meaning lion. The Cape lion – now extinct – once roamed here. The reserve was established in 1974 to conserve a small remnant herd of endangered Cape mountain zebra that numbered just five in 1976. Thanks to focused conservation initiatives, including resettling animals in private and national nature reserves, Cape mountain zebra numbers are on the rise. Tsitsikamma gets an upgrade The Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) has received a R17-million boost from the government’s Expanded Public

Infrastructure Programme (EPIP) to upgrade existing infrastructure. Planned upgrades within the park include 17 new “oceanettes”

overlooking the marine area, changes to the administration office and reception area at Storms River, paving and road works for the Otter camp and a new entrance gate at Storms River. The word Tsitsikamma means the place of many waters. The area, which was declared a national park in 1964, is home to one of the Garden Route’s biggest trees, a yellowwood that is almost 1 000 years old. Two of Tsitsikamma’s hiking trails

(the Otter and the Dolphin) enjoy green-flag status. The flag system ensures hiking trails meet standards in terms of outlay, accommodation, facilities and service, as well as the conservation of natural resources. Nature’s Valley beach, also part of the national park, has enjoyed blue-flag status for several years. Blue-flag status is awarded to beaches that meet a host of stringent environmental criteria, including water quality and safety standards.

Following the successful reintroduction of a herd of 20 buffalo – nine cows and 11 bulls – into Marakele National Park in 2013, 10 more cows

have been released there. Marakele National Park, which forms part of the Waterberg Biosphere, is a Big Five park located on the outskirts of the town of Thabazimbi in Limpopo. In 2009, an outbreak of the disease theileriosis decimated the park’s buffalo population. Once the disease

had been completely eradicated, a decision was taken to reintroduce the animal into the park. Marakele is known for being one of the world’s largest breeding colonies of the endangered Cape vulture. It is also home to Tuli elephant as well as to leopard and other wild cats, kudu, and a

The Hilux is legend. We reminisce about Hiluxes of a bygone era in celebration of decades of market dominance in South Africa.

s I write this, another special build series of the Hilux in the form of the Dakar Edition is flying off showroom floors in celebration of Toyota’s motorsport success. The Hilux is a vehicle that has become a legend in its own lifetime and has been the bestseller in its class for more than four decades. Such is the popularity of the Hilux that more than 11 million of them have been sold worldwide since the very first series made its debut in 1968. South Africans alone have purchased nearly one million models in the Hilux’s various guises, from Spartan workhorses to luxury models at the pinnacle of the doublecab range. These days the Hilux affords you everything that opens and shuts, warms and cools, and entertains you wherever you go. And go you can – few off-roaders can beat the

4×4 capability, reliability and sturdiness of a Hilux. Small wonder, then, that around the world it is the vehicle of choice wherever drivers face the most treacherous terrain imaginable. I believe that, as with the equally iconic Corolla, there is not a single South African who hasn’t been touched by a Hilux in their daily life. I grew up with a few Hiluxes in my family, and today we certainly enjoy and consume products and services that have been transported to us or to our favourite retail stores by a Hilux of some sort. When I got my driver’s licence at 18, it was virtually the end of the rides I enjoyed on my 50cc motorbike and the practice runs in my mother’s Corolla Sprinter. Freshly emancipated, I turned to the brand-new long-wheelbase Hilux SRX that my elder brother had just acquired (he currently

has a 2012-model single-cab SRX and an overland-spec Cruiser 200 in his garage) and started enjoying excursions to the beach with the family Alsatian, Rupert. I don’t know which one of us enjoyed it more – me, behind the wheel, feeling much the man in a brand-new bakkie, or Rupert, with his coat and ears blowing in the wind as he rode in the bakkie’s capacious load-bed. Yes, the Hilux has touched us all, but judging by the continued popularity of this bakkie, it seems the best is yet to come. – François Rabe

Gen 2: four- and five-speed manuals were offered, and engines grew in size, with 1,6-, 2,0- and 2,2-litre four-cylinder petrol power plants on offer.

Gen 3: long- and short-wheelbase models were offered, as were 4×4 variants.

Gen 4: diesels were offered for the first time, and numerous petrol options became available. In the 1980s, the Hilux was popularised as the vehicle of choice for the lead character in the Back to the Future movie franchise.


WorldMags.net Gen 5: Toyota introduced this Hilux in most markets in late 1988, but the fourth generation remained in production in South Africa until 1997, when the sixth-generation was introduced. This was due to South African content laws at the time, which made it cheaper to continue to produce the fourth-generation Hilux rather than retool the plant for the fifth generation, so the Gen 5 was never officially available in SA.

Gen 6: the Hilux had been available in SA for 35 years and remained the best-selling bakkie in the market for an equal period. It formed the base for the Legend 35 model in 2005.

Gen 7: in almost a decade on the market, this iteration of the Hilux has seen equipment and cosmetic upgrades twice (in 2007 and 2013) and has formed the base of special-edition models such as the Legend 40, the Heritage Edition and two Dakar Editions.

The one everybody wants We have heard many great tales of Hilux owners and their rides, but one that stands out is that of Maurice Pope, whose 18-year-old Hilux has 687 236km on the odo and has eager potential buyers stopping him wherever he goes. The Pretoria-based horse owner/breeder and farrier says he is flattered by the attention but adds that he is “ certainly not selling – regardless of the

attractiveness of the offer”. The owner of two Hilux bakkies, he has nothing but praise for his “elderly” Hilux, which he first set eyes on in 2003 when he was doing his apprenticeship. The opportunity to buy it presented itself in 2005 when the bakkie’s previous owner emigrated. Sporting a coat of green paint, the 1996-model Hilux had a “mere” 375 000km on the clock. Covering more than 300 000km subsequently seems to have been light work for the 3C engine.

The bakkie has since been resprayed, and the original 2,8-litre diesel engine was replaced by a 2,2-litre when the odo clocked 584 000km. Says Maurice, “To me, it is nostalgia on wheels, and I’ll keep on driving it as long as the wheels still turn. It’s quite possible that my children will be driving this Hilux one day because it just seems to go on forever.” Because of the rough terrain that this Hilux has to overcome from time to time, Maurice is a firm believer in regular servicing. The service routine includes changing the oil and air filters every 5 000km and replacing the fuel filter every 15 000km. The Hilux has never required a water or oil top-up. As an avid fan of the Toyota Hilux (his other Hilux is a double-cab 3,0 D-4D), Maurice believes that Hilux owners are good folk: “When I meet someone else who drives a Hilux, I know that that is a decent human being.” In a lighter vein, he adds, “Not driving a Toyota is a health risk, like smoking.”

Total numbers Hilux global production in Japan started in 1968, and the vehicle debuted in South Africa the following year. When the second generation was introduced locally in 1973, the Hilux had already established itself as the top-selling bakkie in South Africa. A 4×4 variant was introduced in 1981, the first mainstream model of its kind and the one that eventually would popularise it as the ideal family and lifestyle vehicle. To date, more than 950 000 Hiluxes have been sold in SA.

kind. “Writing a new chapter for commercial vehicle operation in South Africa,” it was said. It shared its 18R engine (tuned to 59kW/134Nm) and gearbox with the Cressida. Notably, it came with full-floor

carpets, inertia-reel seat belts, a rev counter, intermittent wipers, and a fullwidth rear-step bumper that has since become a standard feature on Hilux models. The new price was R5 495.

A famous red Hilux was the Gen 7-series Hilux, converted by Arctic Trucks of Iceland and driven to within a stone’s throw of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano by the BBC’s Top Gear presenter James “Captain Slow” May in 2010 (watch it here: bit.ly/1nl8MUe). The conversion sees the addition, among others, of raised suspension and gumball tyres, enabling the Hilux to tread as light as possible on slippery, treacherous surfaces of snow and ice. A number of South African-built Hiluxes have since been converted (with virtually no mechanical modifications) to Arctic Trucks specification and are being used at the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE) base on that inhospitable continent. Some were used as assist vehicles in a race to the South Pole that saw South Africans Braam Malherbe and Peter van Kets place third after an epic dash of 768km in 24 days under conditions of -45°C in January 2012.

The most famous Hilux in the world must be the red Gen 4 series, which the BBC’s Top Gear TV presenters simply could not destroy – it survived hours in the ocean, having a caravan dropped on top of it and being blown sky high from atop a skyscraper that was being demolished. Toyota goes farming Toyota is using its wealth of knowledge of production control systems and process improvements to help rice farmers in Japan manage their workload with a new IT tool. Large-scale tests of a cloud-based system are being conducted as part of a Japanese government-backed project to create advanced agricultural management models. These are needed to support the growing numbers of small-scale farmers and landowners, who are entrusting cultivation of their land to large cooperatives. The Toyota IT tool can be used to organise, in a central database, the data

gathered from individual field workers, so that work across scattered, independent rice farms may be better managed. The tool can be used to distribute daily coordinated work plans to labourers in different rice paddies over a large area. The workers report their progress to a central database, using a smartphone or tablet to provide information that the administrators can use to manage the overall cultivation programme. The Toyota-developed technology can also be used after the growing period to obtain information during the drying and refining phases. Information about harvest

quantity and quality can be collected and analysed, helping farmers to costeffectively produce a better-tasting crop. Toyota has been working with rice growers in the Aichi district of Japan to help them improve cultivation and boost productivity. The IT tool and related services will be marketed and sold by Toyota’s IT subsidiary, Toyota Media Service Corporation. At present the system supports only the cultivation of major crops, such as rice, wheat and soya, but Toyota intends to continue development in order to expand the scope of support.

Hilux voted best bakkie in Germany The readers of Auto Bild Allrad – Germany’s largest automotive magazine dedicated specifically to four-wheel-drive vehicles – voted the Toyota Hilux 4x4 the best imported bakkie available in Germany. A total of 175 all-wheel-drive models competed in 10 categories, including SUVs, crossovers, MPVs, sedans, hatches and bakkies, which is where the Hilux came up trumps in the readers’ poll. The Hilux available in Germany is built at the Prospecton Plant in Durban, where an average of 120 000 units are produced yearly. Of these, about 30% is for the domestic market, while the remaining 70% is exported to other African countries as well as to Latin America and Europe. “This prestigious award once again underlines why the Hilux is not just SA’s favourite, but Germany’s too,” says Kerry Roodt, General Manager: Marketing Communications, Toyota South Africa. COPPER RECYCLING Scrapped cars are a valuable source of recyclable copper. The electric and electronic circuits in modern cars are largely dependent on copper as a conducting material. The value chain sees copper recycled from junked cars being used in the manufacture of new cars.

Toyota first with copper recycling Copper is one of the world’s most sought-after metals, yet independent estimates suggest that the global mineable supply will be exhausted in about 40 years. Toyota has worked with a group of industry partners to define a world-first system to retrieve and recycle copper from vehicle wiring harnesses, helping to secure a valuable new source of the raw material. Copper is in high demand for infrastructure development in emerging markets and is also used in the manufacture of electric motors

for hybrid powertrains. In 2010, Toyota and its project partners Yazaki and Toyota Tsusho began working with eight specialist vehicle-dismantling businesses in Japan on a wide-ranging programme that included establishing quality requirements for preprocessing vehicles that had reached the end of their useful lives. Previously it had not been possible to recycle harnesses for their copper content using mechanical methods, but Toyota came up with a sorting method that safeguards the metal

from contamination by minute impurities that may be introduced during the dismantling process. Trials were subsequently launched at its Honsha plant in 2013, and after stringent quality checks, the retrieved copper was successfully reintroduced into the vehicle production process. The technology has delivered recycled metal with 99,96% purity – a level which can secure stable production quality. Toyota estimates that as much as 1 000t of copper can be produced annually using the new process.

From cars to cement “Zero Waste” is a concept taken to heart by Toyota’s Burnaston car plant in the UK, where even the residue from waste water treatment is being recycled and supplied as a raw material for use in cement production. Toyota’s UK factory processes more than a quarter of a million cubic metres of waste water a year, filtering out metals and other contaminating materials so that it is clean enough to enter the sewer system. The material left behind, a filter “cake” rich in calcium, is shipped to a third-party business that recycles it in cement production for the construction industry. The recycling opportunity was made possible after Toyota adopted a nonhazardous liquid lime product for the treatment process. By replacing the dry lime powder used previously, Toyota

made the operation quicker, cleaner and cheaper. It takes less manpower too. Up to 300t of the filter cake is produced by the plant each year. Similar technology has been adopted

by Toyota’s manufacturing facility in the USA, where its introduction has eliminated about 450t of wastewater sludge a year. As in the UK, the USA operation sends no waste to landfill.

Landfill waste for green power In the US, Toyota is turning garbage into good, with a scheme to use gas from a landfill site to power vehicle production. Although the company targets zero waste-to-landfill for its operations, it has come up with a method of generating green electricity from a disposal site close to its factory in Kentucky. The system is expected to be up and running early in 2015 and to produce enough power to build about 10 000 vehicles a year. As the solid landfill waste breaks down, gas is captured in a network of wells and used to fuel electricity generators. The power is then fed via underground lines to the Toyota plant a short distance away. When working at full capacity, the system will generate 1MW of electricity an hour, approximately enough to power 800 average homes. At the same time, greenhouse gas emissions from the

landfill site will be cut by as much as 90%, improving local air quality. This is a further example of the smart approach to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources that is being applied at Toyota manufacturing sites worldwide. The Kentucky plant sends zero waste to landfill, having implemented a thorough recycling programme that includes producing compost that is used to help fertilize a garden on site. The Etios hatch and sedan have proven extremely popular. With the launch of the ruggedly styled Etios Cross model, buyers in the sub-B-segment of the market have more choice and the prospect of more urban adventure. oyota South Africa cannot keep up with the demand for the Etios hatch and sedan models. Since their introduction here in 2012, they have been a runaway success in the sub-B-segment of the market. This is no surprise – the Etios has space (the biggest interior in its class) as well as pace with the largest-capacity engine in its price bracket. Now its appeal has broadened even more with the advent of the Etios Cross, based on the hatchback model but dressed in sporty crossover cladding to set it apart from competitors in the market. Just like the fun character of the hatchback, the crossover character of the

newcomer will no doubt have huge appeal for adventureloving urban motorists. The Cross is available at a price of R159 800, a slight premium over the standard Etios model on which it is based. Under the skin here is no mechanical change in body structure.

THE SAME BUT DIFFERENT On the outside, the Cross model is distinguished from the regular Etios hatchback by its sporty styling kit. This includes black pigmentation for the front and rear bumpers, a grille integrated with the front bumper via one-piece moulding that includes an aggressively stylised bull bar and front splitter with a brushed

aluminium look, a rear spoiler, black pigmentation wheel arch mouldings that act as sill protectors, black lower-door and rocker-panel mouldings along the side, roof rails, and alloy wheels clad with 185/60R15 tyres. The added body parts on the Cross model result in a slight increase in the Etios’s exterior dimensions, adding 120mm to the overall length, 40mm to the width and 40mm to the height, the latter mainly attributable to the standard roof rails. The overall luggage capacity of 360dm³ and fuel tank of 45 litres, together with all other measurements, remain the same as on the standard Etios. hen Maxine Jackson, content manager for a leadership centre, took delivery of her new-model Corolla, she was one of the very first customers in Cape Town to do so. Certainly she was the first in her home suburb of Pinelands to buy one of these cars. Her white 2004-model Corolla 140i had been getting on for 10 years and had 153 000km on the clock; so when news of the new Corolla broke in the media earlier this year, the time was right to shop for new wheels. She insisted it had to be a Toyota, in light of the Corolla 140i that had served her so faithfully and, before that, her old Camry, which had been used for many years to cart tourists on private tours around the Cape. Though tidings of the new Corolla were out, Toyota dealers

Maxine had to wait, impatiently, before she could even look at one, let alone test-drive it. “Sales Executive Adrian Horsley of Market Toyota Culemborg was a star in all of this. He brought a car to my workplace in Durbanville [for me] to drive, arranged all the paperwork and delivered the new car to my office – complete with a large red bow – the moment stock became available,” said Maxine. “I loved the reliability, economy and boot space of the 140i, and so I waited for the new Corolla,” she added. “I wanted to stay with the Toyota brand.” Maxine’s son Kyle (13) is an avid cricketer and rugby player, so her car often has to accommodate a load of boys and their sports equipment. She and Kyle also travel to the Garden

Route and the West Coast once or twice a year. The new engine’s technology and efficiency were prime considerations; and though she had researched the Corolla’s standard specification, Maxine was delighted to discover that her new car also came with Bluetooth, a reverse camera, comfortable leather seats and a host of other little luxuries. Her toy poodle, Pepper, travels in the car every day (Maxine’s one concession has been to put a protector over the leather seats) when she’s dropped off at friends Ilze and Bruce Erlangsen before Maxine goes to work. (The Erlangsens, keen Toyota fans themselves, own a RAV4 and a Verso. They recently sold their older-model Corolla). So, Maxine makes a daily

round trip to drop Kyle and Pepper off, and then another of more than 50km to work; however, in the first month she enjoyed the new car so much that she covered almost 3 000km, showing it off to friends and relatives. The 140i served Maxine faithfully: in some 10 years it required only routine maintenance; new general wear-and-tear items, such as tyres; and a clutch replacement (the latter was no surprise, with mountains and hills constituting much of the car’s driving terrain). The sleek newcomer comes complete with a four-year/90 000km service plan, and there’s little doubt that Maxine will enjoy the Corolla to the full.

f owners end up looking like their dogs, then I’m pretty sure the same applies to cars and their drivers. Of course, I would like to look like a sleek, sexy, low-slung sports car, but I own and love my 12-year-old Toyota Hilux Raider KZ-TE 4x4 double cab – and it’s a turbo diesel, nogal. It’s hard-working, dependable and a real workhorse with multiple personalities. Much like me. When we got married in January 2002, hubby Alex Bassios and I eschewed any flashy, beribboned sedan, and I arrived and left the church in our newly acquired bakkie. It was tricky getting into the car in a long, tight dress, but some heaving and wriggling did the trick. I remember sitting with my feet up on the dashboard on that hot summer evening, wondering if my marriage would be as adventurous a ride as the ones we would be taking in

the bakkie… Not long after that, Alex took the bakkie on an African adventure. I remember cautioning him not to get the car scratched and to take extra care with the interior and the paintwork. It was only on his return that I discovered just how irresponsible he had been and how bravely my bakkie had withstood all tests. He had headed off into the Kalahari with a bunch of mates. Early one morning, he and a friend, Mole, had gone off to a nearby waterhole. They arrived, reversed the bakkie up against a thorn tree and settled down to do some early-morning game viewing. Just as the boredom settled in and they were planning to leave, a couple of female elephants sauntered into view. Now this was exciting stuff, so the two of them sat up and looked sharp. As Alex tells it, the elephants streamed in until he and Mole were pretty much surrounded by 50 or more rumbling, jostling beasts. If you think female elephants are big, you should see the males – they are simply enormous.

SNIFF AND SEE And then the excitement began. First one male and then another approached the bakkie to sniff it out and see just what threat it posed to the herd. By now Alex and Mole were regretting ever having brought an orange with them. One particularly big bull elephant tested the bull bars with his foot and gave the car a little push up and down. Once he had checked out the suspension (all good), he moved on to the side

mirrors and gently worked them over. And there I was back in Cape Town, worried about the paintwork. When Mole and Alex realised they weren’t going anywhere for the rest of the day, they settled back, not to relax, but to argue the merits of parking up against a thorn tree and then to take a series of incredible photographs which nobody really believes haven’t been Photoshopped. When the herd finally moved off at the end of a very long and hot day, both men drove back to camp to tell their story. These days when I pull up into an upmarket suburban parking lot and park my worn bakkie alongside a newer

model or a shopping 4×4 with a sleeker, slicker-looking woman, we both sneer a little and know that my car has earned its stripes. With my trusty Hilux we tow horseboxes, go camping, help friends move house and have transported 10 wildly angry geese. On high days and holidays, the back seats get a very good dusting out and a group of giggly ballet girls climb in. I lift schoolkids daily and there are always a few who are happy to ride along. The school bags get chucked unceremoniously in the back.

One child (who shall remain anonymous, because I really like his mom) is happy to get a lift but goes to great pains to tell me each time he rides along that my car is the dirtiest vehicle that he has ever travelled in. It’s not true, of course, but if you cart around a beloved family dog and the odd chicken, then the seats do begin to show some wear and tear. My custom-made seat covers are washed regularly and the car seat manufacturer is frequently in awe of how much of a beating his seat covers can withstand.

The other morning, after a particularly busy run (off to school with kids and cakes balanced precariously), I was at the municipal dump offloading garden refuse. While I was loading up a ton of sand (bought for a fraction of its normal price), I happened on some other treasures. A brand-new pair of Rollerblades, a life jacket, some canvases that can be painted over and used again for the kids, a birdbath for the school garden and a few other odds and ends that all fitted into my bakkie – with room to spare. As we were finishing up, the hen – who was on her way to the vet – managed to get out of her box and fly out of the open window and gap it to freedom. At that the dog jumped out of the car to find me and report on the runaway bird. It was pandemonium while everybody gave chase, except for the dog, who couldn’t be bothered to chase chickens. The men who worked at the dump thought I was insane to take a chicken to the vet. I drove off with my bakkie laden with goodies and the chicken safely back in her box. The windows were open and Bruce Springsteen was belting out “Born to Run” at full volume. As the sun beat down on yet another perfect Cape Town morning, it occurred to me that I could never live this life in a slinky sports car or in a car with spotless seats. But that suits me just fine. I’m more than happy with what I’ve got.

LAND CRUISER MAN – OS DU RANDT While living outside Bloemfontein, Toyota Free State Cheetahs front-row coach Os du Randt enjoyed driving his Land Cruiser Double-Cab V8. In the veld, you can drive anywhere, and with a Land Cruiser you are able to go where no other bakkie has gone before. “With veld fires being a big concern, it is important to have a robust vehicle like the Land Cruiser fitted with approved Toyota functional accessories, like the bull bar, tow bar and rubber floor mats,” says Os. “Having a rear step with a tow bar combination is a vital accessory on a farm vehicle. This tow bar supports with the towing of emergency supplies and heavy objects, while the rear step allows easy access onto the load bin of the vehicle. “I also had an approved bull bar fitted to my vehicle, as it protects and keeps you safe in the event of an accident.” Os strongly believes it is essential to rubberise the load bin, as this protects the load area from damage and rust, saving you the repair costs. WorldMags.net or a living, I travel – and my travels have taken me from Iceland to Tierra del Fuego, Tete to Addis Ababa, and from Dar es Salaam to Upington, mainly by aircraft, a major polluter of our upper atmosphere. For someone who professes to be an ecologist and dedicated green warrior, this is a terrifying cross to bear, especially in forums where I fulminate against the current disregard for our fragile planet. Often, I have to face a militant member of the audience who, with a quivering finger, accuses me of ecological high treason and bigotry. Naturally there is an element of truth in their accusations, because if I had to be totally true to my word I would have to live in a tree house built from rubble, sleep under newspapers and consume weed salad, followed by acorn coffee served in a discarded jam tin. In fairness, though, I live in a tiny house, use only bicycle transport when at home, forage for much of my food, and heat my little cottage by burning invasive weeds in a high-tech wood stove. My lighting is exclusively powered by lightemitting diodes, in summer I cook with solar energy, and my hot-water system is double insulated and on a timer. That is, I consider my actions, which is not a bad mantra for modern living, because every action we take in life has some effect on the environment.

PEDAL POWER I come from a family of cyclists, from my grandfather down to my dad, who believed that you should be prudent in your habits, including travelling. My maternal grandfather, Oupa Boy, bought his Rudge bicycle in 1921 and used it his entire life until 1969. Today I own four bicycles, including a rather

fancy battery-assisted German hybrid, a high-tech beauty with lithium-ion batteries that recharge while freewheeling downhill. In my 33 years at Stellenbosch University, I have driven my car only 11 times. I have simply used rain gear on my bike in winter, with lights for the darkness. Cycling is like swimming naked: you are free, surrounded by glorious wind and smells and sights. Is cycling dangerous? Of course it can be! I still think back in shame to my ghastly behaviour towards car drivers as I’ve cursed and shouted my way through Stellenbosch’s narrow streets. I was born with alternative-transport genes. I shall never forget the day I saw my first Toyota Prius hybrid car. It was in Canterbury, England, where I was attending a conference on small falcon population dynamics. On my Sunday break, I decided to walk into the city from the university on a hill outside town. It was high autumn in Kent, with cotton-wool clouds and fields of chrome-yellow rape setting the scene. Soundlessly, a weird shape whooshed downhill past me, only the sound of its tyres proving that it was not levitating. And lo and behold, a week later my friend Bert bought the first of his two Prius sedans, and I was hooked. This was in 1998, and to this day his two cars have served him faultlessly. Little did I know that many years later, in 2010, I would start my association with Toyota and land a Prius of my own. This blood-red car set the tone for my hybrid fixation and taught me how to manage my driving optimally. Needless to say, I sometimes took my passion for economy to such lengths that other motorists nearly went crazy. Stopping at a traffic light next to another Prius, I lowered my window and whispered

to him, “Let’s see how slowly we can take off.” Only another battery-head could have enjoyed the in-joke. These days, I drive the new Auris Hybrid, a car that has really crept under my skin by dint of its sheer balance in doing everything just right.

THE REAL COST I drive a Toyota hybrid vehicle because of who I am. My personal mantra is one of respect, for myself, for others, and therefore towards life, as well as responsibility towards the planet that sustains me. I do, however, regularly face derision about my choice of vehicle, mainly based on facile arguments about the ecological cost of the battery as well as the perception that there are no wellconsidered recycling pathways for the hybrids. Shall we look at the real cost of lithium-ion batteries? If we were to take the combined number of cellphones (6,8 billion), tablets (119 million in 2012 alone) and then add the batteries in shavers, watches, toys and innumerable other devices around the world, the mass of the batteries in hybrid vehicles fades into insignificance. And Toyota

has a rigid policy for handling discarded hybrid batteries. Excellent news for the hybridvehicle market is that in February 2014, South African-born Elon Musk announced his plans for the biggest lithium-ion factory in the world. His vision is nothing short of staggering: by 2020 the so-called Gigafactory will produce batteries for 500 000 vehicles, and the price per kilowatt-hour will be reduced

from wind and sun. With the near halving of solar-panel costs in the past five years, we are rapidly seeing our landscapes change with the sudden appearance of wind farms, solar arrays and solar ovens. If we project the swift progress in renewable-energy generation elsewhere in the world, it’s only a matter of time before we follow suit and produce a sizeable chunk of our output from these sources.

Musk is now doing exactly what the early pioneers of the mass-production of cars did in a structured manner. South Africa is waking up to the near-limitless potential of renewable electricity generation

We are witnessing a steady and escalating rise in fuel prices these days and, with dwindling resources and an increasingly unstable Middle Eastern source, this trend will likely continue. Clearly the time for thinking anew and critically reconsidering one’s transport options has come. I am proud to be a hybrid-vehicle user, and cannot wait for the new dawn of these extraordinary vehicles that Toyota has developed and refined into the amazing models that they are today.

ust de Winter. The name sends a mixed bag of emotions through a 4×4 lover’s synapses: fear and adrenalin being the two main contenders. Every year in the latter half of April a contingent of 4×4-crazy people who love the outdoors relocate their families to an 18ha campsite on the banks of the Elands River in Limpopo, 100km north of Pretoria, for a long weekend of slugging around in mud and dirt.

That the Toyota Rust de Winter 4×4 Jamboree is the largest gathering of 4×4s in a competition in South Africa is a credible rumour. Held over four days, it’s every bush adventurer’s dream. Day one sees the arrival of a myriad 4×4s. Some self-driven, others so tinkered with that they’re no longer fit for the

open road and are thus towed in. Then there’s the search for the perfect spot to set up camp, registration for participating teams and scrutinising of the contending vehicles.

Day two sees the start of the gymkhana section, followed invariably by a braai with some of the new friends you’ve made. Day three is the most fearsome. A mountainous 55km route that takes six hours to complete and comes with fun warning signs for either the ‘4×4’ option, or the ‘Serious, serious 4×4’ option. Afterwards, everyone huddles around their various fires and recounts stories of how they’re amazed their Fortuner’s bumper survived the day unscathed. Not that we’re speaking from personal experience or anything…

TOYOTA RULES The Toyota Rust de Winter 4×4 Jamboree celebrated its 35th birthday this year. Toyota has been the backing sponsor on more than half of these occasions. A highlight on the 4×4’s calendar, the event is run by the 4×4 ATV Club in Pretoria (www.4x4atv. org) and is aimed at creating a 4×4 environment that provides good, wholesome fun for the whole family. Our team – fellow petrolhead Jeanette KokKritzinger and me – was docked 50 points because we had no men or children on our team. But for the kiddies and partners who came along but believed 4×4’ing was not for them, the campsite was awash with activities, from a swimming pool slide to a jumping castle and craft activities. This crazy notion of entering the Rust de Winter Jamboree as a female-only team arose when we were mucking about with a Toyota Prado in the dunes of Walvis Bay in Namibia. If this makes us sound proficient at this 4×4 stuff, we’re not; our aim was simply to challenge ourselves and answer the question as to whether two women with a passion for cars could learn the basics of 4×4’ing and take on the challenges

presented by Rust de Winter. We wanted to use a standard 4×4 that usually serves as a mom’s taxi and beat it around the bush. Toyota SA lent us a Fortuner 3,0 D-4D 4×4. Next, we needed

a guru to teach us the 4×4 ways of “wax on” and “wax off”, so we called upon Gerhard and PG Groenewald from the Klipbokkop 4×4 Academy outside Worcester (www.klipbokkop.co.za).

Toyota rules the roost at the Rust de Winter get-together, with models of every description taking part in the obstacle courses.

To our delight they were more than enthusiastic to help, with a Fortuner on hand in the exact spec we needed for training. Two days of intensive thrashing about saw us learning the Fortuner’s dynamic 4×4 systems – from the abilities of the limited slip differential to knowing when one needs to engage the diff lock, and so on. We quickly realised that the Fortuner was more than a capable beast. All we had to do was believe in ourselves enough to pull this off. Feeling prepared, we set off for Limpopo.

TIME TO RECOVER Jeanette and I, both active in the media business, called ourselves the Media Asters, after the dainty flower that resembles a daisy. At scrutineering everything was checked, along with our recovery kit. We had no idea how integral this would become to our weekend’s enjoyment.

For every driving obstacle there was an opt-out bypass, but being there to test ourselves – and with complete faith in the Fortuner – we chose the “rough going” route every time After a night of surviving hypothermia, it was an early call for the gymkhana. We hurriedly joined the queue at number 43. The 10-obstacle gymkhana section preoccupies the navigator (Jeanette) with puzzles and challenges, while the driver (me) focuses on not getting stuck, rolling back, reversing, stopping, touching a banner or trashing the obstacle. The fewer of these mistakes you make, the more points you score. Obstacle One proved worth the training and raised our confidence levels, but choosing the “Rambo” route through mud, rather than the “Nataniël” option, sans mud, saw our demise in the next obstacle. We got stuck, as did the

4×4s before and after us. Here the recovery kit came in handy, and poor Jeanette was subjected to an early mudbath while attaching the tow rope. After that we learnt to approach every obstacle with respect, which paid off at the end of the day. The Fortuner’s 343Nm of torque – available from a low 1 400rpm – assisted tremendously, enabling us to navigate around technical obstacles as slowly as possible and as fast as necessary. Driving out of the gymkhana arena happy and confident, all of Gerhard and PG’s odd-seeming training exercises made sense to us. The principles we had learnt on vehicle, terrain and tyre dynamics had proved invaluable.

As we sat around the campfire discussing the day’s activities, we realised that the asking price of our Fortuner is a bargain, considering the capability, adventure possibilities and durability of the brand. Night two saw the arrival of salvation in the form of more blankets, and we slept like only those who have spent a day successfully traversing 10 obstacles at a 4×4 gymkhana know how. A fish eagle’s cry heralded the day of the mountain route, 55km of serious stuff that takes six hours to complete. At 9,2km an hour. Dual challenges tested driver ability and knowhow. Other challenges, such as building a puzzle, finding a clue (usually in the last tree searched) or scaling a sheer cliff face, were more interactive. At Rust de Winter there’s something to keep every member of the family occupied. A four-year-old beat us at picking up keys using only our mouths and a rudimentary hook, and we learnt that we have fantastic aim with a kettie, using marbles as ammunition.

NO COPPING OUT For every driving obstacle there was an opt-out bypass, but being there to test ourselves – and with complete faith in the Fortuner – we chose the “rough going” route every time. From stomach-clenching descents over rock faces, to river crossings that meandered through the mountains, to the climbs up and over yet more challenging rock terrain, at every severe 4×4 obstacle we were guided by the competent course marshals. By simply following their instructions managing every obstacle was easy. The most fearsome obstacle on the mountain route was the final descent homewards through what appeared to be a waterfall and a ravine laid with a steel ladder to enhance traction on the descent. For the first time, we felt ill. When I enquired about a possible bypass the marshals were adamant: the only way out is to push through. We offered up a prayer that we would escape with both bumpers intact. And we did. It seems that with a factory-standard 220mm ground clearance, an approach angle of 30 degrees and a departure angle of 25 degrees, the Toyota Fortuner is unstoppable.

Our final day saw a small victory for Jeanette and me when we took home the Rolling Pin trophy for the winning ladies’ team. We had achieved our goal and by completing the 2014 Toyota Rust de Winter 4×4 Jamboree without drama in a standard Toyota Fortuner. And yes, we intend to return next year in the hope that we will see many more “mom’s taxis” challenging us for the crown.

ew things merge as well as rugby and a solid bakkie, and none make a better fit than the Toyota Cheetahs rugby team, who can lay claim to hosting a full line-up of front-row Springbok players, all of whom drive a Toyota Hilux 3,0 D-4D. Both the Cheetahs and Toyota are household names and are held in the same fond regard as biltong, chakalaka, rooibos tea and former news anchor Riaan Cruywagen. Whether you support the Free State rugby team or not, everybody loves them, even the New Zealanders. The same can be said of the Hilux bakkie: it is as popular in Australia and other countries as it is here. The Toyota Cheetahs’ front-row trio comprises Trevor Nyakane at the position of loose head, captain Adriaan Strauss as hooker and the colossal Coenie Oosthuizen as head prop. It’s an impressive combination that strikes fear into any opposition, whether they play on the international stage against the English at Twickenham in London or against the Crusaders at AMI Stadium in Christchurch, New Zealand, in the Super Rugby series. These three powerhouses of Cheetahs rugby have become heroes to their young supporters.

His farming background has instilled in Strauss great respect for the outdoors, and he loves soaking up one of nature’s free gifts – vitamin D. “I love this Hilux! It’s my dream car and it always has been my dream to have a bakkie like this. It’s awesome because I love being outdoors, so its abilities suit me perfectly,” enthused the veteran of 33 test matches. “Because I love the outdoors and I travel to the farm at every opportunity, I do a reasonable amount of driving on gravel roads. is ideal for my travelling purposes,” added the player affectionately known as “Atter”. The 29-year-old admits that being a pro rugby player is difficult because of the amount of travel the team is required to do, which means being away from his young family. “It’s not the easiest thing to play rugby if you have a family, because with Super Rugby you could be away from home for a month at a stretch, and if you play a full season with the Boks, you’re away for another four months,” he said. Speaking about their weekly training regime, Strauss said the team train hard in the Toyota Cheetahs camp. “We basically have three gym sessions a week, and then there’s the field work. We also put a lot of time into off-field sessions, which are normally video sessions as individuals or in groups with the various coaches.” Time off for a professional rugby player is a luxury because matches are generally played at weekends. The Toyota Cheetahs side usually gets a day off from training two days before a match. It’s time quite often spent with family or enjoying the occasional braai with teammates. “It’s a very long season. We see each other every day, but we’re all very good friends and we do get to see each other in a nonrugby environment as well. It’s difficult

to single out the few players I spend more time with, because we are really a tight-knit family,” the skipper said.

STILL YOUNG Weighing in at a colossal 128kg, Coenie Oosthuizen aka “Shrek” is one of the heaviest and most powerful props in world rugby and is known for his solid scrum work and strong runs and for stealing the ball from the opposing team. Oosthuizen, who recently turned 25, is a relative youngster in the front row. The rule of thumb is that a prop hits his peak as a player after he turns 30. However, the double World Cup-winning Springbok prop, Os du Randt, already holds this player in high regard and believes he is going to get even better. “Coenie has a great eagerness to learn and is prepared to take in what I have to share with him. People tend to forget he is still very young due to the fact that he has been playing big rugby since he was 19,” the gentle giant said. While his captain is an outdoors-loving family man, Coenie puts his 2013-model D-4D to somewhat more practical use. “Toyota has been in my family for a really long time. I’ve grown up with the brand, but I have to say I’m really enjoying driving my Hilux. I use my bakkie quite

often, constantly doing construction work around the house and so forth,” said the former Grey College student. “One cannot ask for a better bakkie: there’s nothing like the power of a Toyota. If there’s a big load to be carried, [the D-4D] is comfortable and convenient to load. It handles heavy loads without a problem. My previous bakkie, which wasn’t a Toyota, battled to carry a cube of 500 bricks, whereas the Hilux has no problem carting the weight,” he added. Oosthuizen reiterates what Strauss said about the team all being friends. The 2,05m-tall Lood de Jager, who also drives a Toyota, is one of his big mates in the team, and they regularly braai together or hang out at a club in Bloemfontein. “People often wonder if I run a Toyota dealership from my house because there are three or four bakkies parked outside when the guys come over for a braai. Heinrich Brüssow also endorses the brand and is often at my place as well. The farmers are quite jealous of us, because they want these bakkies,” he chuckled. When it comes to balancing his franchise and Springbok rugby, Oosthuizen has a mature philosophy of keeping things simple: “I try not to change too much when it comes to

NO MORE TAXIS With three test caps to his name, Trevor Nyakane is the least experienced Springbok of the trio. He was born in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, and made his debut in the green-and-gold against Italy last year. He followed this by scoring his first try against Samoa in Pretoria a few weeks later. Nyakane bought his first car with the match earnings from his Springbok duty last year, which helped him get to training with the Toyota Cheetahs. Before that, he had to rely on taxis and

other means of transport to the training grounds. “I bought my first car last year, but the Hilux is a powerhouse. It’s something totally different. It feels like you are driving a very fast truck,” said the player with the big smile. “I’m enjoying my Toyota. It’s such a comfortable car to drive,” he added. According to him, the Hilux has no problem with power and carries a heavy load, which includes his 120kg physique. “Yes, the shocks are made to carry my weight,” he laughs. “I don’t even feel it drop when I get in!” When it comes to the Toyota Cheetahs, all of the players function as a team in order to deliver results. Nyakane feels it’s very much the same thing when it comes to their sponsorship involvement with Toyota. “It’s like family for us. When we play in the front row we have to work as a

unit, and Toyota has become a part of that unit. It is something we really appreciate,” the former swimming champion added. As for the team environment, he shares the same sentiments as Strauss and Oosthuizen, namely, that the players are a close-knit family. He spends much of his free time with speedster Raymond Rhule and the highly impressive Teboho “Oupa” Mohoje. The trio will continue their front row brotherhood in the Springbok camp after being named in Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer’s national training camp. Joining them are Boks newcomers Lood de Jager, “Oupa” Mohoje and Sevens Springbok Cornal Hendricks. Willie le Roux, Johan Goosen and Heinrich Brüssow make up the nine players who were invited to the national training camp.

oyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) was founded in 1972, the year Swedish rally driver Ove Andersson started rallying Toyota cars. Ever since, TMG has built high-performance cars to race in the compelling world of motorsport. That journey has taken TMG to many rally wins and World Rally Championships (WRC), nine seasons in Formula One and – after an earlier spell at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 1990s – the current World Endurance Championship (WEC). But building and racing Toyotas is not the only reason the company calls itself “the home of high performance”. When Toyota withdrew from Formula One in 2009, TMG, which had built F1 cars and run the F1 programme, needed to reposition itself. With a wealth of experience as a racing team, TMG boasted some of the largest engineering and manufacturing facilities in Europe at its base in Cologne, Germany, and a team of highly skilled engineers. So it transformed

itself into a high-performance centre for design, development and production in the automotive and motorsport industries – including for its parent company.

A PROJECT WITH A DIFFERENCE To show what it was capable of, in 2010 TMG started the TS-650 project. The mission? To build a car using all the high-tech design, testing and production facilities TMG had at its disposal. It also had to demonstrate how Formula One technology could be put to use in a modern road vehicle – a car design that could potentially be sold. The car chosen for the project was a Lexus LS 460. As the largest sedan in the Lexus family, it’s not the nimblest of cars, but that only added more excitement to the challenge. Every department in TMG’s sprawling, 30 000m2 facility was put to work to create the ultimate “sports limousine”. TMG took

the 2UR-GSE naturally aspirated 5-litre V8 from the Lexus IS-F and added two Garrett GT2871R turbos. Of course, the engine was reworked to make the most of the addition: the compression ratio was reduced from 11,8:1 to 9,6:1, and new cylinder heads, pistons, intake manifolds and con rods were developed and built in-house. TMG redesigned the sump to cope with the higher cornering forces, the oil jets were modified, and extra cooling for the pistons was added. Compared to a regular LS 460, the TS-650 has 68% more power and 55% more torque, sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed Aisin automatic gearbox with paddle shift. The car weighs 2 000kg – not bad, considering all the extra hardware that’s been bolted onto it. Nevertheless, it sprints from 0−100km/h in less than four seconds, and its top speed is 320km/h. It looks the part too. TMG used its wind tunnels to create aerodynamic modifications, resulting in a front splitter, side skirts, flat underfloor, a rear diffuser incorporating cooling for the Torsen limited-slip differential, and a rear spoiler. A strut-reinforced carbon-fibre roof was fitted, which reduces weight by 7kg, and carbon struts were fitted in the engine bay to add stiffness to the body structure. All these tweaks not only make the car more structured and aerodynamically efficient, but also give it its stunning looks, especially in the matt-grey finish it’s been painted in. The visual splendour of the car is further enhanced by the 20-inch alloys with Michelin Pilot Super Sport 10J and

A JOB WELL DONE Mission accomplished, you might say. So big was the impression the TS-650 made that, soon after its presentation, rumours began to surface: TMG would become Toyota’s specialist division; TMG would transform more “everyday” Toyota or Lexus cars into spectacular nuclear weapons on wheels, for sale to the discerning customer. But that won’t happen. TMG has made it very clear that it is not a car manufacturer and does not want to be one. It creates technology that shows what is possible, technology that will eventually appear on the road in Toyota and Lexus cars that anyone can buy. TMG currently runs the Toyota WEC team, which in 2014 comprises 10 races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For TMG, the WEC is the most important platform to showcase what it’s capable of. The TMG motto is: “The only way to

275/35R tyres at the front, and 12J and 345/30R at the rear. The suspension was lowered, and now features custom-made, lightweight uprights to improve stability at high speeds. The car has active Sachs dampers and carbon-ceramic brake discs and pads taken from the Lexus LFA. The TS-650’s interior looks and feels like that of an executive limo, delivering all the comfort you’d expect from a luxury car, but the Alcantara dash-top, the carbon strips on the dashboard fascia and the subtle chrome details remind you that this limo packs a bigger punch. The only giveaway that you’re sitting in a prototype is the big red emergency-stop button on the console. But that’s a small distraction from the luxurious feeling of the bespoke quality surrounding you. The seats are super-comfortable, and since they are specially designed to support the driver’s body even at high speed, they make a tight fit – exactly what you need in a high-performance car such as this. Sitting behind the wheel, you feel as

Few people have had the chance to drive this car, as TMG only once gave a select group the opportunity to test it at the German Groß Dölln circuit. The verdict of British car magazine Evo was this: “The TS 650 is blisteringly, almost surreally, rapid in a straight line. But what is surprising is how benign and relaxed the external visual and aural violence seems from behind the wheel. The steering is good – well weighted and direct – and the car’s two-tonne mass seems well contained. Braking from around 220km/h for the long, sweeping left-hander at the end of the straight, the TS-650 feels massively stable and beautifully balanced

Basing it on the Yaris, TMG built the Yaris R1A rally car, and it will soon be launching an R3 rally version of the 86. Preparations for a return to the World Rally Championship are under way too. So, yes, TMG will continue to build spectacular cars that can be bought by customers all over the world. But not one of them will look, feel or drive like the stunning TS-650. Sadly, that remains a one-off, destined to a life on show in the TMG private museum.

Since the reveal of its LF-Gh concept car in 2011 – the precursor to today’s GS – Lexus has forged a strong identity with its spindle-grille design, an element that’s quickly become a key styling feature synonymous with the brand. Far from being a simple bolt-on solution to giving a car a more individual look, it’s an integral element in the sharper, edgier styling

The basic principles are rooted in L-finesse, the design approach Lexus has applied to all its cars since 2005. The frontal treatment of the original Lexus CT 200h generated a basic shape that subsequently brought about the spindle design, a breakthrough credited to Katsuhiko Inatomi, who led the GS design team. He first combined the

upper and lower grilles into a single unit with a central pinch point that creates the spindle effect. In successive concepts and production models, Lexus has successfully adapted the basic spindle design to express different qualities appropriate to each model; for example, by adjusting the level of the pinch point up or down, using different mesh designs and finishes for the grille surround, and giving the grille more depth by projecting the pinch point further forward, as in the case of the forthcoming RC F performance coupé.

The compact NX is coming Lexus has unveiled the production version of its compact crossover vehicle in the form the NX, the new, small SUV that will be available in South Africa in the first half of 2015. The target market is customers new to the Lexus brand; though with its striking, edgy design and use of highend technologies, it stands as a hero model, setting new standards for future Lexus models. The central design focus of the angular NX shape remains the signature spindle grille flanked by LED headlamps and daytime running lights. The grille blends seamlessly into a sculpted bonnet, creating strongly contrasting surfacing that projects a sense of depth. The roofline is set towards the rear to give maximum visual impact. Other details include an innovative doormirror design, a world-first door-handle mechanism with a concealed key barrel, and integrated lighting. These features enhance the overall premium look by creating a smooth finish along the side. The back end features L-shaped LED wrap-around combination lamps. Inside, the look is that of a sports car. Details include a thick-rimmed sports steering wheel and contrasting trims. Three engines will be available on international markets: an efficient petrolelectric hybrid (NX 300h), a 2,0-litre petrol turbo (NX 200t), and a naturally aspirated petrol (NX 200). Each will offer the choice of front- and all-wheel drive. Local equipment and engine choices will be finalised closer to the NX becoming available next year, though the new turbo petrol engine is definitely on the cards, and there’s a strong likelihood the hybrid model will be too.

Multiple-award-winning South African musician Loyiso Bala is passionate about music as well as his “big friendly giant” – a Toyota FJ Cruiser. ANET SCHOEMAN paid him a visit. had to wait a few minutes for Loyiso to return from the car wash when I went to meet him at his home in Douglasdale, Johannesburg. He arrived in his now shiny-black FJ and beamed as he chatted about his chariot. “I was never fond of driving, but with my FJ I always find excuses to drive somewhere. Man, I love this car! It’s got everything I need,” he exclaims as he gets out from behind the wheel. “I love the styling, and in the traffic people notice this big friendly giant. In fact, this car looks good even if it’s dirty – it just adds to the funky style. I just need to walk to my car to be in a good mood. “When I perform with my group Swing City [in which he has teamed up with popular musicians Nathan Ro and Graeme Watkins] in remote places, guess who always volunteers his car for the drive? And then we fight over who actually gets to drive it. This is an ideal passenger, car and the 4×4 functions are a great bonus when we have to negotiate some remote rural roads on the

way to a performance. I’m always confident that my FJ will get us there safely and on time, no matter how treacherous the conditions.” Though an ideal family car for long journeys, the FJ is also the car Loyiso prefers when he pops over to the shops. “It might be big, but I probably park it better than any smaller car,” he points out. Loyiso did not grow up with cars or driving. “Our house had a garage, but my grandfather used it for choir practice! It was only when I attended the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir and started mixing with other students that I was first exposed to Toyota. When the choir performed in rural areas we would be hosted by the families of the town, many of whom owned Toyotas. Way back then, I would never have thought that I would drive and love a Toyota one day.”

NEW TO THE FAMILY Since baby daughter Kenzie arrived early in 2013, Loyiso and his business-manager wife Jennifer quickly had to come to terms with

the large amount of luggage that one small person needs. “But no matter what you load into this car, it still looks stylish.” And in moments of desperation, the seats can be folded flat for even more space. Loyiso adores his little girl, and finds that balance in life is now even more important than ever. “Change is never easy, but this is such a positive change. I need to balance my time between work and home and strive to be a good father. Kids are a gift from God, and you must always remind yourself of this. Once you accept this gift, you will enjoy the experience. I feel an investment in her is also an investment in me. I have so much to be thankful for.” Singing has always been part of Loyiso’s life. “I grew up in a very musical family. We all sang and I just assumed everybody could sing. WorldMags.net KEY TO SUCCESS “We grew up without electricity, and the only way we could entertain ourselves was with our voices. We did not have toys but used singing to have lots of fun and play games, like other kids would play ball. It was our way of entertaining ourselves. “Just like sport, you get better at a skill if you train it. Over the years I have learnt that success is 20% talent and 80% hard work. You might have an amazing talent, but if you don’t train and hone it, you will not succeed.” If training is the key to success, Loyiso has a solid foundation. He was born in KwaNobuhle, outside Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape. Like his older brother Zwai and, later, his younger brother Phelo, Loyiso joined the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir (from Grades 4 to 9). It validated his belief that singing is as natural to people as talking. Here he had a very classical upbringing and excelled as head of the choir. “When I went to high school at St Stithians college in Johannesburg, we had to put a music show together in our respective houses. I was a bit irritated when some of the kids could not sing in tune, and I suspected that they were just fooling around. It was only when the housemaster called me in after complaints from the kids in my house (about my strictness) that I realised that some people really cannot sing. This was probably the first time that I realised I’m blessed with a special gift. But you have to control talent and develop your voice – and that requires hard work.” Loyiso has certainly paid his dues. He has a Grade 8 qualification in piano and singing, and never stops learning. He studied music at Tshwane University of Technology and constantly extends his music and business horizons by listening to different styles of music and keeping an eye on the industry.

RAKING IN THE AWARDS

LINKING GENRES “Education is not limited to the classroom: it is also the awareness of the business of music. And I’m constantly learning. When I decided to do gospel music, I went to Bible school, not to become a preacher, but to ensure that I have a solid background from which to work. Even today I’m still doing Bible studies online so I can apply this knowledge to my music.” He combines his golden voice with a natural talent for songwriting. “I see myself as a songwriter first and then as a singer. I also love co-writing with other people. They add a new energy and something different to the end result.” Today Loyiso’s music repertoire spans quite a few disciplines. He performs with his two brothers as the internationally acclaimed Bala Brothers, linking opera, township jazz and R & B. Swing City combines jazz, swing and blues with a modern twist. He is hugely popular as a solo artist too. Loyiso’s popularity came as a great surprise to him: “When I grew up, girls revered the sport heroes at school. It was the time of the Rugby World Cup, and we all wanted to

Loyiso has won multiple awards, ranging from Best R & B album of 2007 at the Metro FM Awards to five South African Music Awards (SAMAs), and three Metro FM awards. In 2008 he was awarded Best R & B and Best Producer at the SAMAs and he was nominated for best song of 2009 and 2010 for “Blow Your Mind” and “Maybe”, respectively, again at the SAMAs. He was also nominated at the MTV Africa Music Awards alongside Alicia Keys, Rihanna, and Akon, and is known for his style awards from You magazine and GQ (“Most Stylish Male in the Country”). He performed with Alicia Keys, Shakira, the BlackEyed Peas and John Legend at the FIFA World Cup kick-off celebration concert in June 2010 at Orlando Stadium, Soweto.

Cars, braais and the simple life

There is nothing quite like a braai to bring people together and make them feel at home. SUSAN REYNARD shares a glimpse into the busy lives of the President and CEO of Toyota South Africa, Dr Johan van Zyl, and his wife Santie over an excellent fillet one fine afternoon. 62

WorldMags.netFOODZONE reparing to shoot the breeze with the head of Toyota South Africa, Dr Johan van Zyl, and his wife, Santie, is a daunting prospect. Not only is he one of the senior executives in the world of Toyota, but also his lifetime accomplishments in business, growing investment in South Africa, academia and social responsibility indicate a man who is driven as much by his intellect as by his personal values. “We are just a normal family,” he and Santie assure me at the start of our chat on a wintry yet sunny afternoon in a secluded courtyard on Toyota’s premises in Johannesburg. He loves the outdoors and a good braai. His favourite cooking utensil is an ancient pair of Weber tongs. To bring this together, Weber South Africa’s Chef, Tommy Dickson, is using one of its newest pieces of equipment, the 57cm Master-Touch Charcoal Grill, to cook a huge fillet that’s been supplied courtesy of Country Meat. Many will recognise Tommy from Toks & Tjops, a cooking programme on KykNet, hosted by local rugby legends Toks van der Linde and Breyton Paulse, along with TV and radio presenter Janine Oberholzer. The braai is started and very soon the smoke dissipates. A little water is added to the drip tray, the fillet is on, the lid is closed and the temperature gauge on the lid reports a steady cooking temperature within. The beauty is that you don’t have to watch it, so we get back to chatting while the Weber does the work. When work isn’t calling, the Van Zyls, who live in Pretoria with their daughters Nadia (30) and Karla (25) and two muchloved Yorkies, enjoy spending time together as a family, preferably outdoors. “We like to go to our farm, spend time outdoors next to an open fire, braai and drink a little bit of wine. It’s a way of relaxing and enjoying time with our friends and family,” says Johan.

WEBER SUGGESTS: SMOKED LAMB WITH PAPRIKA Preparation time: 20 minutes Marinating time: 3 days Grilling time: 1 hour 30 minutes Servings: Work on about 200g raw deboned weight per person for a main meal. Grilling method: Indirect Most people enjoy the taste and smell of smoked paprika. It has a slightly sweet, smoky aroma and flavour, and gives a certain richness to the meat. Together with the flavours of the marinade, this is a great-tasting piece of meat. This recipe takes some planning but is well worth it.

INGREDIENTS 1 leg of lamb (deboned and butterflied – ask your butcher to cut it for you) 150ml lemon juice (freshly squeezed) 150ml olive oil 10ml garlic, chopped 5 sprigs rosemary 30g paprika Salt and black pepper 250ml wood chips 150ml white wine

METHOD 3 days before cooking 1. Take a large plastic Ziploc bag and place the lamb inside. 2. Add the lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and rosemary, and seal the bag. Try to get most of the air out. 3. Massage the meat in the bag to ensure it is well covered by the marinade, and then refrigerate. 4. Take out the bag once a day to massage and refrigerate. Day of preparation 1. Remove from the fridge about 2 hours

before cooking to allow the meat to get to room temperature. 2. Prepare an indirect fire with 25 briquettes on each side and burn for about 35 minutes until the briquettes are grey. 3. Remove the lamb from the bag and allow the marinade to drip off as much as possible. 4. Season with salt and pepper and then coat the lamb with an even layer of the paprika. 5. Soak the wood chips in the wine and drain just before cooking. 6. Sprinkle half of the wood chips directly onto the fire and place the lamb in the middle of the grid. 7. Close the lid and cook for 30 minutes before adding the other half of the wood chips. 8. Cook for a further 40–50 minutes (depending on the weight of the meat). It’s best to test the core temperature with a thermometer. When the core temperature is 60–65ºC, you should have a light-pink in the middle. I don’t suggest cooking this over 70ºC if you like your meat more well done. 9. Leave the meat to rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. 10. The intense flavour of the smoked paprika together with the flavours from the marinade makes this perfect for any occasion.

QUALITY COUNTS As a man who spends his life perfecting the motoring experience in all its nuances, Johan is understandably a stickler for quality. He says, “I cannot stand bad quality or a bad cut of meat. Rather buy the best, and not a lot if you can’t afford it.” You’ll always find three key items on the Van Zyls’ braai grill: boerewors, lamb chops from a supplier in Lydenburg, and chicken. They enjoy beef fillet and T-bone steaks as well as fish, and to top off the meal, ice cream is Johan’s favourite dessert. With work as busy as it is, the Van Zyls spend their downtime enjoying the simple things in life, such as home-cooked meals, and activities far away from what they normally do. Whether it’s at the beach, on the mountains, in the bush or exploring cities overseas, this is a family that loves to walk. When travelling, Santie says, the best way to get around a new city is on foot. That way you get to see some of the places off the tourist track and experience the city as the locals do. They might return to favourite haunts, but they love to find new little restaurants to try out on their travels. On the whole, they prefer picking up memories to memorabilia. Santie says, “In the beginning, you may see something you want to buy that will connect you to the country, but not once you visit again. Now I will only buy something if it is not available in South Africa.” One holiday, when the girls were little, Johan recalls, he purchased a life-sized fluffy toy dog in London and had to carry this rather cumbersome item across half of Europe and the US. They still have

this well-travelled toy to this day. On a different occasion, Santie took a liking to a Moroccan carpet and it, too, proved a challenge to pack and travel with. The Van Zyls consider themselves fortunate to have travelled all over the world, and list the US, Europe and Japan among their favourite places to visit. Johan says, “Japan has always been special. I’ve been there over a hundred times but always learn something new each time I visit. I’ve studied and understand Japanese culture and customs. It’s a very unique culture, food and way of doing things.” Although his passport is filled with stamps from exotic countries, Johan says, “My favourite place in the world is South Africa – and I’m not just saying that! Our country is diverse and unique, and it is home.”

as he may like, he still enters road and mountain-bike races, including the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Momentum Cycle Tour. He maintains that he has the best teams in the world – at work, in sports and at home – and that they make life much easier. They are active in various initiatives to help those less fortunate. For instance, Santie has twice joined Johan in Quads 4 Quads, a fundraising event for the

QuadPara Association of South Africa. Johan also loves to fly, starting with his time in the air force as a young man. Around seven years ago he learnt to pilot a chopper, and says of this hobby, “Flying a helicopter switches you off completely. It takes a lot of concentration, and you have to do just that.”


WorldMags.net With the amount of travelling they do as a family and that Johan does for business – locally at least once a week, to Japan once a month and throughout Africa at least every two months – reading is another way to unwind and switch off. His interests are varied, and he’ll pick up books on whatever his current interest is, from history and autobiographies to rugby, cars and novels. His musical tastes are similarly diverse, from Queen to the classics. It almost goes without saying that Johan loves cars and has done from an early age. His father, an engineer, taught him how to fix cars. From that stems a passion for and collection of classic cars, particularly British sports cars from the 1950s–60s. “I like the styling, the classic look and the interiors,” he explains. When asked if there is any period of the past he would like to time-travel back to if he could, Johan says he is firmly focused on the future. “I am amazed by technology and how information technology has changed the world. We are always in contact. While I love history, as the past teaches you a lot of lessons, I would rather move forward than go backwards,” he maintains.

KEEP IT SIMPLE While we’ve been chatting, the Weber has done the work of transforming the fillet into a succulent, tender and delicious piece of meat. Tommy serves it while Johan and Santie reminisce about some of the amazing animal life they saw on a trip to the Serengeti, including his favourite, leopard and giraffe. He says Santie is the real animal lover, and gently teases that he sometimes has to remind her that she can’t bring her favourites home. When we end a pleasant few hours around the Weber, Santie is busy getting a new curry recipe from Tommy and planning the next family meal while Johan talks a bit of rugby.

WEBER SUGGESTS: PEAR TART TATIN The direct translation is “upside-down tart”. It is prepared in the Griddle Pan from the new Weber Original Gourmet BBQ System, but you can also make it in a cake pan or even a foil drip tray. Preparation time: 15 minutes Grilling time: 30–35 minutes Serves: 6–8 people Grilling method: Indirect

INGREDIENTS 1×400g roll of puff pastry 2 tins pear halves in syrup 5ml ground cinnamon 1 lemon (zest and juice) 200ml brown sugar 30g butter

METHOD 1. Prepare an indirect fire with 25 briquettes on each side and let it burn for 35 minutes. 2. Open and drain the pear halves. Keep the syrup if you want to make additional sauce. 3. Mix the pear halves, sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest and 20ml lemon juice in a large bowl. Try not to break the pears. 4. Butter the pan well to prevent sticking. 5. Arrange the pears in a single layer in the pan and pour over the syrup which remains behind. Break the

leftover butter into smaller pieces and place randomly between the pears. 6. Open the sheet of pastry. It is important to defrost the pastry beforehand as you will get better baking results that way. Cut the pastry into the shape of the dish and place on top of the pears. Tuck in the pastry a little on the sides. 7. When the fire is ready, place the pan on the grid for indirect cooking and close the lid. 8. Bake for 30–35 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and crisp. Remove from the fire. 9. The tart needs to rest for about 5 minutes before turning it out onto a tray. The temptation could very well be too strong for you to even bother with flipping the tart out, but if you decide to do it, then do it now. If the caramel gets too cold it will struggle to come out. Place a tray or platter upside down on top of the tart and flip over. 10. Serve with ice cream and custard.

SUPER SILHOUETTES MAKE THE BEST OF THE TWILIGHT HOURS

Everybody loves a good silhouette shot, but when it comes to taking them, many photographers end up disappointed with the results. We show you how to better capture those tricky high-contrast photos early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Silhouettes must be some of the most striking photographs you can capture, but because you’re usually photographing straight into the sun, they’re not easy to take. More often than not, the picture on the camera’s LCD screen doesn’t look much like the scene you saw when you pressed the shutter button, but keeping a few key points in mind and with just a few adjustments to your settings, you too can capture silhouettes like a pro.

MAKE THE SILHOUETTES BLACKER Silhouette photos are always high in contrast – the foreground is dark and the background is bright. This is particularly challenging to get right because digital cameras will usually try to capture a bit of detail in the shadows. In other words, your subject will appear grey instead of completely black. Also, in order for the camera to capture that detail you don’t necessarily want, the shutter stays open a little longer, so the colour in your background tends to wash out into nothing more than bright white. There is, however, an easy way to underexpose the photo. Switch from Automatic to Program (P) or Aperture (Av or A) Priority and then find your Exposure Compensation button. It’s usually marked with a small plus and minus sign in a square. Now start underexposing the image by increments of a third: -¹⁄³, -²⁄³, -1, and so on, until the silhouettes in your photo appear black enough. At the same time, the colour in the background should become more and more saturated.

PHOTOGRAPH RECOGNISABLE SUBJECTS Because we see so little detail in silhouetted subjects, the overall shape of each subject is important. Try to capture simple, uncluttered subjects that are easily recognisable. You’re much better off photographing a lone elephant or a baobab tree than a clumped herd of zebras or a cluster of sickle bushes. You should end up with a lovely, bright rim lining around your subject if the sun is still above the horizon, but as soon as the sun drops, the lining will disappear as well.

If you use a large F-value in Aperture Priority (f/16 and higher), you can make the sun appear star-like if you place it right on the edge of the silhouette. It may, however, take a few practice shots to get it right.

Many photographers shy away from dusty conditions, but silhouettes actually look their best when there’s a puff of dust in the air. This is because the fine dust particles reflect the sunlight, often saturating the background completely, especially when the sun is low on the horizon. Remember, backlit photos appear golden just after sunrise and shortly before sunset, but the closer to midday you take your shots, the more silver they will appear.

Fighting cancer with trucks A specially equipped Hino 500-Series 1626 chassis cab fitted with a box body has joined the fleet of vehicles operated by the PinkDrive charitable organisation in its fight against breast cancer in South Africa. The box body is fitted out with specialised equipment for conducting mammography screening and is valued at approximately R10 million. Says Noelene Kotschan, Founder and Director of PinkDrive, “The mobile mammography units travel to semiurban and urban areas with the objective

of offering various disadvantaged communities access to education, physical examination and how to do breast self-examination in the fight against cancer. We have already provided more than 5 000 free mammograms, done over 54 000 clinical breast examinations, educated more than 79 000 people and distributed in excess of 90 000 items of educational material.” The fact that Bidvest is a major sponsor of this project resulted in the group’s McCarthy automotive retailer being

Hino SA restructures There has been a major restructuring in the senior management of Hino South Africa, in line with Toyota Motor Corporation’s global policy of staff rotation among its senior management. Dr Casper Kruger, who has been Hino SA Vice President for the past five years and was instrumental in rolling out the name change from Toyota SA Trucks to Hino SA, has returned to Toyota SA to take up the position of Vice President: Vehicle Sales and Dealer Development for passenger vehicles and light commercials. Ernest Trautmann has taken over the position of Vice President: Hino SA, moving from his previous position as General Manager: Sales and Dealer Network at Toyota SA. Trautmann joined Toyota in 1988 as a marketing and

management consultant and spent eight years with the Toyota and Lexus distributor in the United Arab Emirates. In total, he has spent 26 years working with Toyota products, 18 years of which have been with Toyota SA. At Hino, his focus will be on strategic and future planning. WorldMags.net New customer relationship programme The investment of R55 million in a new plant for Hino trucks on Toyota South Africa’s extensive manufacturing site in Prospecton, near Durban, is confirmation of how important these large commercial vehicles are to the country’s leading motor manufacturer, says Dr Johan van Zyl, President and CEO: Toyota South Africa. It is only part of recent investment in local production, with more than R1 billion having been spent on production facilities in Prospecton over the past couple of years. Hino is a strong brand with great global success, and in South Africa the truck segment of the market is seen as a good growth opportunity in the domestic and export markets. As part of its Total Support programme,

Hino realises the critical importance of backup for its customers. A truck’s downtime can result in huge losses, so, as part of Hino’s brand promise of total commitment, it has made substantial investments in technician training and parts supply, to ensure dedicated dealer support for customers. The new assembly plant has an annual production capacity of 5 000 units on a single shift, and this figure can be increased significantly as demand grows. The number of people employed at the plant and its related support functions stands at over 160 team members. The new facility enables various components to be assembled away from the main assembly line.

They are then delivered in sequence to the line, just in time (JIT) to be fitted to the unit online, thereby benefiting productivity and quality. The trucks produced at the Prospecton plant, including all the Hino models as well as Toyota Dyna, are for the domestic market and neighbouring countries only. There are 31 derivatives, from Dyna to Hino 300-, 500- and 700-Series models. Globally, Hino reported new records in unit sales, sales revenue and profit for the 2013/14 financial year. Unit sales increased by 7,5% to 162 000 with 68,6% of sales coming from markets outside Japan. South Africa is one of the growth markets for Hino, and Hino South Africa is regularly among the top 10 export destinations.

New model, new dealer The opening of the newly built Malalane Toyota dealership coincided with the launch in SA of the all-new Corolla. This can improve fuel consumption if one drives sedately; but since many motorists buy turbocharged engines for performance rather than economy, turbocharging is not a technology that will ultimately result in a cleaner world, so Toyota will introduce turbocharging, albeit on a limited scale. According to Koei Saga, Director and Senior Manager in charge of drivetrain research and development at Toyota, his department is examining water/steam injection to make turbocharged engine combustion more efficient. Turbocharged engines usually run at lower compression ratios than naturally aspirated engines, to avoid harmful detonation. Water injection

ATKINSON CYCLE ENGINES At present, Toyota uses Atkinson cycle engines on the Prius and other hybrid models. The company’s research has shown that this cycle can deliver more effective power gains than turbocharging, without sacrificing fuel economy. With this in mind, Toyota will introduce largerdisplacement Atkinson cycle engines with a lower top-end power output than traditional Otto cycle engines, but their increased thermal efficiency will result in strong acceleration and increased fuel

The Atkinson cycle is a simple modification of the Otto cycle but has interesting consequences: the timing of the intake valve closure is changed from the usual 50 degrees C to a maximum of 110 after bottom dead centre (BDC). The intake valve closes so late that some of the mixture that has been sucked into the cylinder is expelled again. This means that the effective compression ratio decreases, resulting in a loss of efficiency, but there is a gain on the compression stroke. The lower pressure means that less energy is wasted on coping with the friction introduced by piston side-thrust. The major gain is on the power stroke where the usual valve timing is retained, resulting in the full expansion stroke being utilised to extract energy from the burning fuel.

GEARBOXES Toyota favours CVTs (continuously variable transmissions) for smaller engines but is not convinced about them being sufficiently robust for larger engines. Market acceptance varies considerably from country to country. Some motorists dislike the “slipping clutch” sound and feel of a CVT, while others grow accustomed to it, and revel in the seamless acceleration. Toyota is working on a “next-generation geared automatic gearbox” that is bound to have at least seven ratios, because nine-speed automatics are already a reality.

thermal efficiency and will further increase the environmental performance of Toyota vehicles. The new engines leverage the combustion and loss-reduction technologies that Toyota has refined in its dedicated hybrid engines, and they will achieve fuel-efficiency improvements of at least 10% over current vehicles. The engines will be used in models scheduled for partial redesign soon, and a total of 14 new engine variations will be introduced globally by 2015. One of these is a 1,3-litre petrol engine in which Toyota uses the Atkinson cycle to provide an increased expansion ratio and to reduce waste heat through a high compression ratio (13,5) to yield superior thermal efficiency. Further fuel efficiency is ensured through the use of an intake port with a new shape that generates a strong tumble flow (whereby the air-fuel mixture flows in a vertical swirl within the cylinder) and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system paired with Variable Valve Timingintelligent Electric (VVT-iE) technology, to improve combustion and reduce loss. Combined with idling stop/start and other functions, gains of approximately 15% are possible. A 1,0-litre engine jointly developed with Daihatsu has achieved maximum thermal efficiency of 37% – owing to a similar tumble-flow-generating intake port, a cooled EGR system and a high compression ratio – as well as fuelsaving of up to 30%.

You can now broaden your horizons and go and experience the great outdoors. All is good! Or is it? Questions will ultimately arise as to whether you have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to fully appreciate the capabilities of your vehicle and, in the event of a mishap, whether your car’s insurance is adequate.

COVERED OR NOT? When taking ownership of a new 4×4, giving it proper cover is not always as simple as calling an insurance company. VON KRAUSE explains.

ASK SOME QUESTIONS Insuring a 4×4 can be different to insuring a standard passenger car, as an off-road vehicle offers a wider number of driving options – and hence a bigger risk to the insurer. Is your vehicle covered for eventualities such as damage incurred while pursuing activities in rough terrain? Are your accessories and other aftermarket equipment covered? Should these be specified on the policy? Does your insurance cover medical emergencies and, should these happen outside our borders, does it include repatriation costs for the vehicle, for you and for your passengers? These are important points to consider when insuring a vehicle. In most instances, such cover is available but is not always automatically included; some are extra-cost options. Insurance is widely regarded as a grudge purchase. Many brokers have limited knowledge of the 4×4ing environment and do not necessarily assess their clients’ needs and lifestyles when selling a more economical package, a decision that may prove detrimental when the time comes to submit a claim. If you have neither LEFT: When venturing off-road, the risk of the driver damaging the vehicle increases greatly. Investing in a specialised-driving course will ensure you know how to negotiate treacherous conditions, and has the benefit of attracting reduced premiums.

the desire to go off-road nor to travel to neighbouring countries, then most standard policies offer adequate cover. However, if you intend exploring the great outdoors, you’ll find that every adventure comes with challenges and that your insurance needs will differ significantly from insuring your household goods or sedan. Who hasn’t heard harrowing tales of travellers who had their meticulously planned off-road trip marred by a damaged vehicle, had to wait for hours for assistance and then, on filing a claim, were told that their insurance did not include that particular incident type? A close friend had an incident in Mozambique, only to be told by the insurer that his policy excluded water damage and that even if it had been included he would still have been liable for the cost of repatriating the vehicle. What was supposed to be a fun holiday turned out to be an expensive jaunt. Ask your insurer or broker whether your policy includes the following: vehicle repatriation costs from neighbouring African states theft or loss of keys, vehicle audio equipment and personal effects trauma assistance and emergency medical evacuation legal assistance emergency roadside assistance passenger and third-party cover a call centre offering technical, legal and medical assistance.

It’s worth having the peace of mind that comes with adequate cover for your family and vehicle while you travel off the beaten track.

A LESSON LEARNT In 2003, Toyota Advanced Driving (TAD) was asked to assist with a 4×4 adventure event in Africa for a Malaysian touring company. A fully equipped vehicle was sent with two very experienced drivers to form part of the logistics-planning convoy. On a perfectly clear day, on a long, straight gravel road, 10km from Seronera Camp in Serengeti National Park, one the Malaysian scouts lost control of his vehicle as a result of both a lack of concentration and driving experience on this type of terrain. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the vehicle was completely disabled. Prior to embarking on the scouting trip, TAD had insisted that all the vehicles be insured with Cross Country Insurance, which specialises in 4×4-lifestyle insurance products, as it has an established support network in Africa in the event of any mishaps. This decision was justified, as the vehicle was repatriated to South Africa and repaired, and, to the amazement of the touring company, even the decals were replicated and replaced. CEO of Cross Country Insurance Ian Georgeson says that, statistically, more than 60% of the company’s claims happen on-road and are single-

vehicle accidents. “I cannot emphasise enough the importance of investing in a recognised 4×4 course, as the driving dynamics are significantly different to those of a car-like passenger vehicle. There are reduced rates available for drivers who have [done such a course],” says Georgeson. Cross Country’s insurance policies automatically offer benefits that include vehicle repatriation from countries such as Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi. It also has a 24/7 call centre to guide you through what could be a very difficult time in a foreign country. It is up to you to take the necessary precautions to ensure that your 4×4ing becomes the dream you had in mind rather than the nightmare you wanted to avoid.
