BLENDING - CONNECTION & TRANSITION BROOKLYN MUSEUM PARKING LOT, BROOKLYN, NY, USA Urban Design | Cornell MLA Fall Studio | 2016

The project site Brooklyn Museum is located at a point where residential area, cultural area and historic landscape meet in Brooklyn, NYC. However, the surrounding busy avenues, complicated city grid systems and compacted inner properties have created a strong sense of separation and isolation for the site both inside and outside. More importantly, it is the strong edges and property boundaries that hinder people from going in. The main intention of this project is to create better connections and transitions between institutions, especially along boundary edges by designing a new parking lot for Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Botanical Garden. The driving concept is to utilize different ways of blending to create better circulation and visual connection between the project site and its surrounding entities — the Mt. Prospect Park at West, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden at South, and Residential Area at East. Eventually, this blending method will increase attraction and cohesiveness for the whole site.

HARMONIOUS BALANCE IN TAO HUA YUAN 02 ABANK HEADQUARTER, CHENGDU, SICHUAN, CHINA Urban Design | University of Oregon BLA Comp Studio | 2016

This project is located in the Hi-tech District in Chengdu, the most important central city in South-western China. For last two decades, Chengdu is experiencing rapid development, and currently has a population of 14 million people. However, we are focusing too much on economic growth and start to ignore the basic enjoyment of life. The image and memory of the city are shifting from peaceful tiles, green trees to cold steels and glass. It is time to change. This project is focusing on creating an urban landscape that satisfies human uses, brings identity to the city of Chengdu, and is simultaneously aesthetic and sustainable. The term “Tao Hua Yuan is a metaphor for Chinese Utopia. It is literally translated as Peach Blossom Land, which refers to a fable about a chance discovery of an ethereal utopia. My intention is not to create a representation of utopia or an interpretation of pastoral scene, but an urban space where people can interact and play, escape from the city hustle, and enjoy peace of life.

THE WATER 03 TESTING PUBLIC PARK, PORTLAND, OR, USA

SLANT International Landscape Design Competition | 2015

70% of our planet surface is covered with water, and only 2.5% of it is freshwater. More seriously, 69% of our freshwater is stored in polar ice and cannot be directly used by people. The amount of usable water is very little. What’s worse, in most of the contemporary cities, people rarely have a chance to engage with natural water (water from river/spring etc.). Also, due to the loss of natural habitat, biodiversity in urban areas has been dramatically decreased in recent decades. It is critical to let people directly experience this precious natural resource, and let them judge whether it is polluted. We purposed to build a public park with public access that provides opportunities for people to experience natural water, test the water and see the purification process. As intended to choose a site with general conditions so that this park can be built in numerous places, we finally picked a riverfront area that is adjunct to Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, the United States.
