Athens, a city entirely constructed of a single, repeated typology. The Polykatoikia, as it is called, is a cheap replication of the Dom-ino House ideal.

Dom-ino

Breaking down the built environment of central Athens to create a new university for the city. The new University takes the idea of the commons and expands this concept to the maximum. The ground becomes continuous as the walls of the city are taken away, leaving the column.

This unanimous form that dominates Athens built environment is to be deconstructed, stripping away the building to invite a new interpretation of the city.

Evripidou Street is colonised, the buildings are deconstructed, leaving the columns to define a new territory for the university to inhabit. This space is in commons. The university campus becomes a urban fixture for the students and citizens alike. The column is the common element. It is what ties this new ground to its surroundings. Without emulating what was once there, this new campus is made of the city while giving resolution to a street which plays a prominant role in Athens’ geometry but lacks importance in the everyday expereince of the city.

This campus inhabits the centre of Athens, establishing itself in the existing geometry of the city, while presenting a new way of thinking about the urban form. The campus is a subtraction, taking the given condition within Athens and peeling away a layer of construction to provide a new reading of the city.

The column is now a facilitator. With added programs, these new augmented columns act as the starting point for the new univeristy commons. Attracted by these functions, students and Athens residents are invited to inhabit the university campus and coexist in the space.

The New University is defined by its columns. Spaces of education and discourse intersect these columns creating an environment for a new form of urban education. The functions of the columns overlap and help define how geomeotries of education are inserted.

Exploring “void” as a means of creating a new typology of space for an internal urban environment to occur. The project examines the possibility of a negative spaceto create the urban setting. Cutting away from a given context, rather than building up from the ground.

The given context surrounding 450 West 33rd Street is that of an urban scheme extended to its full potential. The famous grid of Manhattan and the new community known as Hudson Yards is a hyperbolic example of the overall theory of urbanism that has been used throughout American urban development. With this frame of thought, we see a certain condition, defined by planning, and market forces replicate itself from the level of the city block to the individual housing unit of a Hudson Yards skyscraper. In our minds, the repetition and continual expansion of this specific circumstance creates a form of life that divorces itself from interest and emotional experiences that challenge the city-dweller to engage with their surroundings. We were interested in how property and the dwelling unit is a well defined item with an explicit border. We have challenged ourselves to rethink the form of the housing unit in response to this condition with the goal of using space to provoke occupation.

The context is this 16 story building (1,800,000 sq.ft.) on the far west side of Midtown Manhattan. This building sits within the new development of Hudson Yards and is part of the larger redevelopment of Midtown. The major facilities are inserted into this mass. Then circulation cores are inserted with a connection between facility, and the ground. The building is covered in a shroud of metal mesh which defines the edge fo this new city, making the city finite.


These voids manifest themselves within the physical building of 450 West 33rd Street. The voids become celebrated facilities that are for the public to use and occupy. These spaces are invasions into the building both as cuts, and as programs. The program brings together both the public (as in the the people of the city) and the people who have become the residents in this new community.

In this space, the public is allowed to celebrate the act of bathing as a collective spectacle. People are allowed to enter this space and experience bathing in a new and exciting way. The space is ringed by the housing floors above it. These houses are separated by their elevation, but community is allowed to form based on their adjancency to this facility. The void and surrounding spaces are left ambigous, to provoke occupation in different ways.

Food preparation and the experience of eating together is celebrated in this space. Surrounding the open square, is a ring of cooking facilities to prepare food for the collective consumption. These facilities house the necessary appliances for food preperation and storage. There is a wall of shelves which act as a permiable barrier between prepration and the feast space. Once within the center a series of tables are arranged haphazardly so different groups are allowed to occupy the space and share an eating expeirence.

The rectangular Retreat facility is a walled in garden where a person enters and encounters a moment of wildness. This expeirnece is an escape from the mundane, for a controlled and personal experience with the natural. This space is open to the air, and when a person is within the wall they leave the city.

CIRCULATE

The walls of the space are lined with benches so when a person is in this space they may sit and have a release from the city. Access to this retreat facility from the housing floors above is through the circulation core which deposits people within the space. This sepration creates a moment where public meets private in a way that provokes the occupation of the space.

Experimentation with domesticity

This project is a response to a form of dwelling which dominates the modern urban landscape. We see the unit which defines ownership overspace as something worth challenging and investigating alternatives to. The traditional definition of ownership over space is one that promotes a form of urbanism that is replicable infanitly over the surface of the Earth. Our investigation is into a finite space defined by explicit borders where the dwelling is broken or unfinished to allow for experimentations with how people who agree

to this form of life can share space. These spaces allow for a level of interaction between what is considered public and what is considered private that is indetermined through the nature of the unit itself and how it is situated in relation to the public facilities that invade the building. These public facilities define the social life of this new world as well as defining how dwelling occurs throughout the space. The form dwelling takes in this space is as furniture set into a predetermined area.

1. Located at the tip of the peninsular below the cliffside to create a new experience of the site.

Site Landmark cuts through the coastal cliffs forcing the visitor to constantly reorient their perspective. At each point along the Landmark, one is introduced very inimately to the cliff’s environment.

This project was a simple motion to reveal what is existing. Instead of insisting on an architectural object dominating an experience, the site itself is the landmark and the architecture exists simply to expose it in new ways.

ECOLOGICAL LEARNING CENTRE FALL 2016/Iowa State ARCH 301 TUTOR: DR. DANIEL NEAGELE.


The Ecological Learning Center is located at the edge of the Des Moines River in central Iowa. It sits in the middle of a forest, looking out on the river. This project explores the idea of boundary. By creating and occupying the form of a cube, the program of the educational space has a limited phyisical presence on the landscape. This barrier between natural and the unnatural is absolute, where once the student leaves the facility they have a clear understanding of the separation between constructed and the natural space. In designing the facility in the form of a perforated cube the project attempts to stimulate questions about the understanding that has been established between Americans and their rural landscape.

“THE SCHOOL OF ATHENS” 2018 GREEK PAVILLION @ LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA NEIHIESER ARGYROS


“Within the theme Free Space of La Biennale di Venezia 2018, the Greek Pavilion explores the commons in the design of academic buildings. The exhibition consists of 56 architectural models that abstract the common spaces of built, un-built, historical and contemporary examples of academic buildings, recognizing that it is more and more in this sort of spaces that consistent parts o flearning take place nowadays. The space itself is designed as informal, one that can host individual study, small group conversations, or large group lectures and debates. All of the fifty-six 3D printed models are treated equally and fill the pavilion homogeneously in every direction as they are displayed on an abstract grid.” - Neiheiser Argyros In assisting with this pavilion I researched and created a model of the CENTRO University building located in Mexico City by TEN Arquitectos. This model is displayed opposite.


TwoXTwo 2016 DESIGN / BUILD PROJECT ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT 2nd YEAR (IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY)


A large scale collaboration between 80 architecture students in the second year of study at Iowa State University. This project focused on finding a way to bring together the design ideas for a pavilion to inhabit the atrium of the college. This structure was to be built using a layering technique of 2” x 2” pieces of wood. My role in this process was to help design the way of interpreting a complex set of surfaces (designed in collaboration) into a cohesive design. And communicating between different working groups to mesh multiple design ideas together. I produced diagrams and working documents to facilitate the construction of this design in a precise and simple way.

Splitting up the project into a series of layers I helped desgin this process of creating descriptive drawings for people to construct the project from. These documents were produced from using Grasshopper to interpret a complex Rhino model into a series of lines that can be reinterpreted as individual pieces of wood.

August 1, 2018 To Whom It May Concern, We're writing to highly recommend Kevin Larson as a part 1/junior architectural designer. We had the great pleasure of teaching Kevin this past year in our Intermediate 15 Unit at the Architectural Association in London, and found him to be highly motivated, passionate, interested, and hard working. He has a good eye and an inquisitive mind. He is a voracious researcher, asks good questions, formulates inventive hypotheses, draws unexpected conclusions, and is constantly seeking out new ways for architecture to make a difference in the world. Kevin’s project was born out of a close observation of the city of Athens that identified the column as the fundamental element in shaping both its history and future. This led to a sophisticated and original proposal for an Open University that challenged how an institution can participate in urban life, proposing a new form of public space within the city. Kevin has a well-developed and wide-ranging set of architectural skills that will allow him to immediately make a meaningful contribution as part of any design team. He would make both a great team player and a dependable leader. He is committed to any task that he is working on and has performed well across a wide range of design challenges – from conceptual thinking and form making to detailed model making and drafting. We also had the pleasure of having Kevin join our office for a few months this summer and have continued to appreciate his abilities and skills. For all of these reasons we know that Kevin would be a great asset to any office.
