DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

My deep-rooted goal is to strive for a more resilient and sustainable world. By providing communities with innovative ways to seamlessly bond both the built and natural worlds as one, this can be done. My experience in architecture and landscape design has provided me a platform to experiment with the natural and built worlds to find design solutions to deliver long-term performance. I would be proud to be a part of this legacy.

INTRODUCTION

There are few career paths that have the capacity to significantly change our world. This is why I chose a career in design as I love what design can do and what it means. Design is boundless. It has the power of aesthetics, efficiency, functionality and of course, beauty. Design gives us what we want, but more importantly, what we need. It’s an aspect of life that can truly shape our world.

EROSCAPE

All five senses of the human interface: sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch are interacted with the naked landscape of the USC Wrigley Institute site. Providing a seamless relationship between man and nature with a sense of nirvana within these elements is the main design objective. An amphibian-like structure developed both on land and in water is strategically located to interact with all three elements of air, earth, and water. Displaying the qualities of air with a smooth sense of lightness and movement, earth with heavy ridged form displaying the role of gravity, and water with a sense of motion and flow with attributes of buoyancy, the design form respects the existing untouched landscape seamlessly connected to the newly built, low resolution/pixelated landform, displaying hierarchy to the existing landform. The morphology of the landform is revealed within a fragmentation of ground to expose built structure. The new form of the structure becomes an art form as it symbolizes the beauty of earth and time with erosion as it imprints its everlasting mark on this planet.

FUTURE PRIMITIVE HUT

17 — FUTURE PRIMITIVE HUT

This project displays a net zero dwelling located in Barcelona, Spain. Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate with mild, humid winters and warm, dry summers. The typology of the house is U-shaped. This typology is selected to create unique spaces in both interior and exterior. The design is modified and stacked to fit the surrounding environment and climate. The area of this residential dwelling is 800 square feet, which is a part of a six-house community, located on a hillside. It is designed to accommodate a young couple with an open concept design that creates spacious areas. Designed to enhance cross ventilation breathing, this house cools down naturally by taking advantage of the biomass of its submerged structure. The sunken house works within the ground for cooling in the summers and warming in the winters.

BEACH PAVILION

27 — FRAMEWORK

California beaches are some of the greatest beaches in the world. With more than 200 square miles of sandy shorelines within the Los Angeles area acting mostly as public space, there is plenty of room for exploration. The project goal is to examine the beaches of Los Angeles and discover a new form of beach pavilion that could accommodate the people within the neighboring areas. The site that I chose was Pelican Cove, located within the Palos Verdes Peninsula area. I found that this area had an abundance of potential which gave me a greater opportunity to expand my design capability as it was not the ordinary, California “sandy” beach, but a cliff beach with steep, rocky slopes showing the beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.

HARMONICS

35 — HARMONICS

Exploring space and program, Harmonics entailed developing an art gallery space on Gallery Row in Downtown Los Angeles to celebrate arts and tourism. This project was unique as the goal was to design a space for a mixed program development that was primarily for a gallery; yet, it also contained retail space such as a café, offices, a reception and seating area. Using the theme of harmonics and the movement of sound to create space, the main piece of the project is two distinctive wave-shaped walls that simulate the resonating action of movement. These pieces generate the development within this multi program space while also acting as an art installation within itself.

BIO-INCISION

45 — BIO-INCISION

Bhartiya City is an emerging smart city located just outside of Bangalore, the technology hub of India. Bio-Incision sits at the center of Bhartiya City operating as the financial center and main gathering place. The 2,000,000 square foot program incorporates ground level retail, open floor plan offices, luxury hotel, and live-work studios. The design focuses on incision; a simple cube retains pure geometric form on the exterior while the inside reflects the dissection of flesh. This dissection allows for unique outdoor gathering places on every level. The U-shape of the building frames a large outdoor celebration plaza while also linking together the four programs. A large ‘sky walk’ further links the building together 100 feet above the ground highlighting the central theme of incorporating nature and architecture. Bio-Incision offers a dynamic user experience through the hope that both architecture and nature can thrive together.

ARCHITEKTON

53 — ARCHITEKTON

This studio proposes a series of new architectural interventions across the Los Angeles Arts District, Skid Row, the Los Angeles River and West Boyle Heights. The aim of the studio is to investigate an architecture that hovers between new and old, ground and sky, while proposing an alternative model for densifying Los Angeles. These interventions are intended to highlight and frame the texture of Los Angeles’ historic fabric without adding density on the ground. The studio critiques Los Angeles’ housing crisis by providing a new form of Los Angeles urbanism: a City on the City. Specifically, this is a newly elevated urban sky-plane developed as a contemporary model for re-inhabiting the city, flying over and through a modified and reconfigured industrial landscape. Illustrated in a series of comic strip graphics, the new urban design strategy is revealed with a story of a young woman and man venturing through the city to only find one another at their departure at an airport gate.

INDIAN BEND WASH REVITALIZATION

69 — INDIAN BEND WASH REVITALIZATION

A redesign of the Indian Bend Wash, this project’s main objective is creating a healthier environment and community. Enhancing the ecology is the main focus of this revitalization as a new sustainable use of green engineering helps the site strive with both wildlife and habitat environments. A use of terraces embraces the natural flow of water, slowing the movement of the hydrology while spreading and soaking the water over time. Simultaneously, the design also acts as a filter system to naturally recharge the water table. This design system enhances the ecology of the Indian Bend Wash as it provides a cleaner and healthier environment that enhances both beauty and aesthetics to the community.

SAN FRANCISCO FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW

—

75 — SAN FRANCISCO FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW

The lowly Agave inspires our garden. Native only to the new world from simple, severe beginnings, it aspires to be something great. By definition, it is illustrious and noble. Using few precious resources, it provides food, beautiful flowers and nectar for tequila itself. Our garden aims to create beauty using few resources while recycling and mimicking the dancing curves of the Agave, creating unique and special structural spaces. We used common materials, and simultaneously provided new ideas for everyone to use in their own landscapes. The palette focuses on edibles to provide a healthier table for us all.

TABLE DESIGN

85 — TABLE DESIGN

Exploring materials and fabrication methods, we were to discover new and effective ways to design and build furniture. As I looked into table concepts, my interest in side tables that can work as both a nightstand and bookshelf grew. Using bent steel rods for the legs and a wood rectangular box for the top piece, the table came together as both an aesthetically pleasing and functional furniture piece.

CHAIR DESIGN

91 — CHAIR DESIGN

Exploring materials and fabrication methods, we were to discover new and effective ways to design and build furniture. Researching chair designs, I soon realized the difficulties in constructing a functional piece. Unlike the table design, the chair needed to support the weight of its users with the hopes of comfortable enjoyment. Using a bending frame, I rounded two steel rods for the large, extended legs. Next came the material choice for the seat portion of the design. The look and feel of leather intrigued me enough to find leather in a stitched pattern that would fit the aesthetics of the chair design. Like the table, the chair came together as both an aesthetically pleasing and functional furniture piece.

Representing the renowned architecture firm Aires Mateus, the project entailed identifying the outward expression of the architecture firm’s brand. With the goal to translate the unique and distinctive traits of Aires Mateus, I embraced the firm’s minimal approach to design with simple geometries and whitewashed color pallet. Titled VOID, the posters take the role of portraying objects in space with the illusion of depth.
