Many procedures that people choose to have in the Summer get them ready for the beach and other important events. People tend to wear less clothing this season, and want the confidence to look and feel good.

People focus less on facial surgery during the Summer because of the constant sun exposure, and therefore choose to maintain their looks with Botox and fillers, which enable someone to look refreshed and rejuvenated. Chest and body surgeries are

CREATIVE DIRECTOR DEAR GENTLEMEN, A year and a half ago, I moved to Los Angeles from New York City. I had so many fantasies about what I wanted my life to be like. I wanted to live in a space with a garden, I wanted a pool, hiking on Saturdays. But my biggest fantasy was to learn how to surf, which I still haven’t done. As with most fantasies, I obsessed over it for so long that I decided it would be the driving force in the new issue. Much of that came from last issue’s cover star and now very pregnant, Audrina Patridge. She lives a mostly beach existence and when we were prepping for the spring launch party Audrina and Mario Lopez hosted, I had the privilege of meeting her Aussie surfer, baby daddy and fiancé Corey Bohan. Not only is Corey a great guy, but he is an incredible sportsman. He is a professional BMXer and surfing is a huge part of his career and life. This issue, our men’s fashion was a fun surfing adventure. We hired my dear friend Daniel D’ Ottavio to shoot and we took our production all the way to Miami --our first location shoot. It was so much fun and we got some great guys to model this season’s hottest swimsuits. I hope everyone loves the results. Commitment to what you believe in and love is definitely a running theme in this issue. Matt McGorry, our cover model and star of How to Get Away with Murder and Orange is the New Black, fights for what he believes in. I have never met a man so committed to the fight for equality and feminism. His interview is a must-read. I was inspired and I am sure all of you will be, too.

WHERE TO STAY VILLA D’ESTE

THE ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP TAKE A SPIN AROUND LAGO DI COMO

Lake Como, in the Lombardy region of Italy, has been ranked among the most beautiful lakes in the world for its microclimate and its picturesque landscape dotted with villas and villages. With a system of well-maintained routes that intertwine through a landscape of snow-topped peaks, plunging coastlines, lakes, and historic towns, Italy can offer plenty of epic driving. And while some roads are undeniably challenging, they all add up to an unforgettable experience. In this issue, we highlight the Ultimate Road Trip.

The Villa d’Este, originally Villa del Garovo, is a Renaissance patrician residence in Cernobbio on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy. Every April, the hotel holds a Concours d’Elegance for vintage and concept cars. The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este was first presented in 1928. In September, it hosts the annual Ambrosetti Forum, an international workshop attended by prominent figures from the fields of politics, finance and business, which has taken place there since 1975. VILLADESTE.COM

You can tell a lot about a car guy by his choice. And what a choice this is... the 2015 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. At 731 horsepower, this car impresses on all fronts, from power and technology to style and refinement. We’ve added some wardrobe tips for the driver and passenger as well as some great resorts to rest your head and relax while exploring the whirlwind of sights and sounds that the Lombardy region has to offer.

GRAND HOTEL VILLA SERBELLONI The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is one of the oldest and most elegant hotels in the Lake Como area and the only 5-Star deluxe hotel in Bellagio. From April to November, the salons and the large lakeside garden offer guests the chance to enjoy an escape far from the maddening corwd and close to nature immersed in one of hte most beautiful panoramas in the world. Set on a peninsula, halfway out into Lake Como, this circa-1850-hotel with Italian-style gardens is about 2 miles west from the Villa Carlotta gardens and under 5 miles from the Villa of Balbianello. INNOVATION & STYLE TALKING SHAPES WITH HAYDENSHAPES FOUNDER HAYDEN COX

interview by

KATIE GOLACINSKI

At only 34, Hayden Cox has already built a business from the ground up. Having never worked for anyone else in the industry and being self-taught, he has had the ability to merge innovation and style to create the brand that is now Haydenshapes. His surfboards are globally distributed and sold in 70 countries. Hayden has also collaborated with Alexander Wang and invented a pioneering technology used in his boards. Now, he’s working on taking the surfboard to even greater heights.

22

Lapalme Magazine: How and when did you become interested in designing boards? Hayden Cox: “I broke my surfboard on a summer holiday when I was 15. Being a young kid and not really having too much money, I was looking for the best and easiest way to use that board… I ended up calling a local surfboard factory and did a week work experience and was hooked. I spent the whole week cleaning up the factory, checking the toilets, organizing, doing anything and everything under the stars to gain enough attention from the owner of the factory, hoping he would be nice enough to show me how to shape a board. When he found out that I was actually on a school holiday, he felt a bit guilty I had spent it cleaning. So, he showed me how to shape one side of the board and I got the experience to shape the other side. I was hooked from that day. The rest of high school was spent channeling all those interests that I had in school, back into creating and mentally creating this brand called Haydenshapes, which I did start in high school.”

LM: Have you always had an interest in entrepreneurship? HC: “I think the interest comes from surfing and surfboards. What fuels most of my passion for business is that I love surfboards. Being in the surfboard industry is something I find very challenging, as it is an industry that is undergoing a lot of change. I am learning as we go with the business side of the team, which has been challenging, but also interesting to me because I do like that part of what I do as well.” LM: After you invented your FutureFlex technology, did you see a lot of opportunities stem from that? HC: “For me, the innovation came from wanting to make the surfboard better and not wanting to deal with the way we built surfboards. I applied my knowledge and learned a lot about the materials and how they could be put together to create a different flex and a different performance in the surfboard. For me, the FutureFlex technology has become a very identifying and recognizable part of our brand. Our customers notice a difference in the technology and that’s because the function of it and the value it adds to how the surfboard rides.

LM: Why did you choose Los Angeles as the location for your second office and factory?

LM: What was it like designing surfboards with Alexander Wang for the Cage installation?

LM: You’re in the process of writing a book, what’s that been like and what can we expect?

HC: “One of the biggest things I took from working and collaborating with Alexander Wang on the marble surfboard project was I was able to learn and see the level at which that brand and Alex works. It really shines through when you work with them of how much they care about what they do. I know that fashion is tough and it moves quickly, but their attention to detail was second to none. It really pushed us to work at a new level and raised the bar of how we approach the manufacturing and the building of our surfboards.”

HC: “It’s been really, obviously new to me, it’s been challenging. But I’ve really enjoyed the process, because I’ve learned a lot from a lot of people that I’ve been inspired by... It has kind of fired me up again to really understand and know why I originally designed the FutureFlex technology and why I originally started my brand. It’s cool to get excited about that because that’s what’s fun about being in business… I think the book is there to get other people excited about embarking on their journey.”

HC: “California, obviously, is one of the biggest markets, or probably the biggest market, for surfing in the world. From a business point of view, L.A. is kind of the heartbeat of the West Coast. It’s close to LAX and I can get back to Sydney pretty quickly, so it is convenient… Surfers all across the northern hemisphere can order boards and have them customized to all various shapes, sizes, and designs through our latest HS Studio --a 3D online customizing software tool that we just launched.”

LM: What’s next for you? HC: “I really want to take the surfboard to that next level: with how we build the board, what we build it out of, and what that is that going to mean to the surfer. At the end of the day, when surfers have fun riding a board, that’s when you are successful. If I can innovate and design that next technology, which helps that surfer do what they want to do along the way, then that’s that idea that I’m going to do.”

24

Lapalme Magazine: You grew up in Australia and now live in Orange County, California. How is Australia’s surf different from southern California’s? Corey Bohan: I grew up in Brisbane, Australia and spent most of my time on the Gold Coast. Anyone who has ever traveled there, especially for the surf, knows it gets really, really good. It’s crowded, but there are some amazing spots to surf. I would say the biggest difference for surfing in Australia compared to California is Australia’s very welcoming water temperature. It’s usually around 65-70 degrees.

MASTER OF LAND & SEA Corey Bohan has traveled the world for countless surfing and BMX matches. As the first athlete to ever three-peat in BMX Dirt at the X Games, he made history the summer of 2006. He has earned several BMX dirt titles and gained the respect of fellow extreme sports athletes in the almost-twenty-years he has been competing. With no plans to slow down anytime soon, the fiancé of Audrina Patridge and dad-to-be sat down to discuss his daring career.

26

interview by

LAUREN JEWORSKI photos courtesy of

GRAEME MURRAY NICK TELLEZ

LM: Where is the coolest place you’ve ever competed? CB: Well, for course design, it would have been Red Bull’s BMX Elevation course they built in Whistler, British Columbia. As for a town that can turn it up, I’d say visiting Prague would be high on my list. LM: Was there ever a point when you had to choose between being a pro and getting a ‘real’ job? And would you take anything back if you could do it over again? CB: No regrets. When I was finishing school, my plan was to join my dad’s construction business and become a carpenter. I was going to build houses and do what he does. Then, BMX took over my life and I decided to travel and compete. That was almost 20 years ago now. LM: Who is your biggest athletic influence? CB: My motivation & main influences come from two athletes: Roger Federer and Kelly Slater. LM: What has been the highlight of your career thus far? CB: I have had many contest wins and career highlights, but the ones I cherish the most would be my five consecutive years wins for #1 Dirt Jumper Award, which was chosen and awarded by the industry and my fellow riders. LM: Do you think being a father will affect the risks you’ll take while competing now? CB: It will play a certain role in my risk vs. reward calculating, but my skills and my limits are known by me. Choosing what and where I perform them is what becoming dad will help with.

As I turn into The Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island, the delicious sound of exotic cars carries on the wind. Lamborghini Aventadors, Huracans, and McLarens roll past, vying for the attention of the crowd at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. For those that haven’t been, the Concours d’Elegance is an automotive charitable event held each year during the second weekend in March at The RitzCarlton Amelia Island Resort. It has been described as a “beauty pageant for rare and elegant cars.” Each entry is rated for authenticity, function, history, style, and quality of restoration by a team of judges that includes specialists for each car type. There are acres of cars in every shape, size and color --more than 250 classic and exotic cars from local car clubs are displayed on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island.

In the distance, the BMW flags celebrate the German carmakers 100th birthday. This year, BMW AG brought out the big guns: a gorgeous red 507 --my first time seeing one in personl. The legendary BMW E46 M3 GTR is elevated on a platform with the new BMW F82 M4 GTS. This car, along with other modern cars, don’t “picture” very well, but one can clearly see where BMW M GmbH has elevated its quality. The BMW E53 X5 Lemans with the 700hp V12 engine sits quietly in the morning haze.

We bring you up to speed on the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance

DARRYLE MOODY

BMW took the V12 from its Le Mans winning race car and shoehorned it into an X5 to test the limits of E53 X5 chassis. This 700hp V12 powered X5 monster was then fitted with a 6-Speed manual transmission, Sabelt racing seats and harnesses, completely stripped out interior and was the first time I seen or heard of a reverse blistered hood, 20” BBS racing wheels on a special raceprepped

suspension.” You can read about these cars and watch videos of them, but seeing them in-person and standing next them give the vehicle context. I check my pulse. Yep, it’s racing a bit. I stand at the front of the car and contemplate just how I was going borrow the stupendously cool carbon fiber engine cover with “V12 BMW Motorsport” script across it. Will I get tackled by an employee of BMW Classic? Will I go to jail? Probably both, so I give up on that idea. But I am not happy leaving without it. As we walk I see my dream car, a BMW E52 Z8. “Excuse me sir, but would you mind if I hug your car for just a minute or two?” During the BMW Drivers of the Ultimate Driving Machine Seminar, Tommy Kendall moderates a panel of racing greats that share stories from their years with BMW. The panel includes: Bill Auberlen, David Cowart, David Hobbs, Sam Posey, Brian Redman, Boris Said, and Hans-Joachim Stuck One of the coolest things to experience after the invocation, The Star-Spangled Banner and the aircraft flyover is the four car salute. There are four racing Chevy Camaros from the 70s, and after the flyover, they start up and rev all Camaros simultaneously. It sounds like the end of the world as the angry engines and exhaust notes waft across the fairway for over a mile. This is completely and utterly awesome. Shortly after lunch, I am in the presence of a 949 horsepower Ferrari LaFerrari. The sleek auto just exudes the sensation of speed. The McLaren

P1 plug-in hybrid sports frame hails from a distant planet. I am in awe just standing next to it. The details are subtle, and you just drink them in. This car looks like it’s going 215 mph as it sits sitting perfectly still under the cloudless, blue sky. We pass by a Singer, the re-imagined 911 Porsche, and the level of craftsmanship it embodies is astounding. All one can do is just admire the men that had the vision, skill and talent to create such a beauty. Pictures cannot convey the level of simple beauty these cars have. With the threat of rain imminent, they move the cars off the fairway. We find this to be the best part of the event. As the local police move people off the sidewalk and onto the fairway, the cars on the fairway start their engines and get into line to move up the steep incline of the golf cart path. Normally, this wouldn’t be a big deal, but if your a 50-year-old car rolling downhill with lots of people in close proximity, it’s a relevant concern. Cars basically have to get a running start. Not to worry though as the Amelia Island Police Department has experience with this event. I look up and notice that about every 4-5 minutes a jet leaves the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport. People that attended the show or had a car(s) in the show are headed off to their next destination. This scene is absolutely surreal: jets flying above and great cars rumbling below. We are in an automotive oasis. The whole weekend is absolutely awesome. It was an honor to be here. I will definitely be on the beach March 10-12, 2017 for the next Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

What bag-style do you suggest for summer use? Today, we carry a lot of things with us, phones, tablets, laptops, extra shoes, magazines, etc... A shopper used to be just for runs to the grocery store, but as the years passed, there was a noticeable shift in attention to the environment. The shopper has morphed from a plastic bag to something more stylish and durable. Bags today come in leather or suede, in muted tones, and interesting details such as contrast handles. Messenger bags are very popular this summer, from the elegance of Tumi to the color and distinctive leather of Balenciaga. The Buscemi PHD Backpack is one cool way to tote your things around! At Neiman Marcus Orlando, we have numerous touch points for luggage accessories and one can easily find the perfect summer bag at the store.

What should one look for when pairing shoes and watches with ensembles? When there is formality, I want a nice size watch, but I also don’t want the timepiece to dominate the wrist. The more formal the event the more I like an elegant watch that fits under the cuff of the shirt and sleeve of the jacket. A watch should always pair with the elegance of the wearers shoes. A watch should match the style of wearer, but also reflect the occasion. A streamlined shoe should have a streamlined watch. Franck Muller is a personal favorite of mine due to the timepieces having a duality to them. They can go from day to evening, formal to casual. Even though the shoe and watch are far apart on the body, they complement each other. I would encourage guys to try matching their watch to their shoes. The Chopard Mille Miglia line is one of my absolute favorites.

When is it appropriate to pair sneakers with a suit? Shoes are supposed to be fun, so that one can show their style and personality. Sneakers are appropriate to wear to parties, art galleries, casual dinners, and social outings. At Neiman Marcus Orlando, we offer customers direct access to a lot of the best designers in the world, and that allows us a breadth and depth that no one else can come close to here in Central Florida.

What’s the best way to layer for summer? Summer layering is comprised of thin and lightweight fabrics that breathe very well -- linens, cottons, and tropical-weight wools. Summer layering is actually to stay cool, which one would see as counterintuitive. That’s where thin fabrics come in. A layered approach gives flexibility within your chosen outfit to stay comfortable moving between warm and cold environments. A t-shirt, thin cotton sweater, an open denim shirt worn as “shirt jacket” or a sport coat blends sartorial and casual. This is a great way to experiment with items or add new ones to your wardrobe.

Can you speak on the importance of a pocket square, and the appropriate size and shape for the clothing? A pocket square can be your most important accessory. It adds a splash of color to your jacket, suit or vest. I personally like to wear a color that stands out against the jacket. I find the ideal size to be around 16”x16” since it’s large enough to give volume to the chest welt pocket of a suit jacket, but doesn’t overwhelm the pocket. It’s an accessory, so it doesn’t need to dominate the chest, just add some visual texture and color. Brunello Cucinelli has a pocket square of one inch showing, so it just peeks out. I take mine and cinch the edges on one end together, then I run it over three fingers and then into the chest welt pocket. I like volume where it looks random. The whole idea is to look like you grabbed it on the way out the door and just put it in your pocket. In the last year, I have added a lapel flower to wear with my chosen pocket square for the day. It adds a little bit of fun and color to the ensemble.

Belize is one of those tucked away gems on the crystal blue Central American coast, between the Yucatan and Honduras, whose breathtaking beaches and diverse populace make you feel downright chill. We were in search of a summer escape that screamed luxury, yet caressed our need for some R & R, and felt like we were starring in our own summer blockbuster. And we found it: Turtle Inn, which happens to be owned by a film legend: Francis Ford Coppola (this is simply one of five resorts he owns). With everything from Sofia’s Beach House (yes, named after daughter Sofia Coppola --one of today’s greatest female filmmakers) to villas, restaurants designed with culinary curiosity in mind, amazing island excursions, and of course, a Wine Aquarium, you are set. Put on that gorgeous, runway swimsuit you’ve been eyeing and sit seaside. The rain forest backdrop will instantly relax you. From the lush greenery, crystal blue water, temperate, tropical weather, to their Italian cuisine and locally sourced fare, this is a welcome escape from city life. It's easy to imagine Hollywood icons slipping into the calm of their private villas and basking in the sun with the promise of exceptional wine and food worth devouring. Belize is one of the few sovereign countries emanating – and dare we say, boasting – luxury, ease, cinematic allure, wine, and adventure. And Turtle Inn encompasses them all. To ensure that your great escape is tailored to you, we have added some of our favorite accommodations.

BIG SPENDER Sofia’s Beach House ($$$) Why is this our top choice? A one-ofa-kind modernist-tropical hideaway, the design by architect Laurent Deroo is exquisite. Created with style, sass, glamour, and privacy in mind, you are surrounded by the finer things, yet have the option of playing in your own private pool or venturing out to the ocean. This beach house has a second-story main house with two guest bungalows (each with their own private deck). You can travel with a few of your friends, escape for a little romance, or make family time way more fab. They even have bicycles, a private butler (um, YES!), a private entrance, and an outdoor barbeque. If you stay for 3 nights or more, you even get your own golf cart! Sofia’s is definitely a luxurious retreat.

SA AV Y TRAVELER Poolside Seafront Cottage ($$) Looking for something a little more chill? This villa oozes luxury without breaking the bank. With Japanese baths, an outdoor shower, a private porch looking out over the water, and handcarved Balinese décor, you’ll be swimming in happy. This is ideal for couples or a weekend away with the fellas or your girls.

WINE & DINE Oh, you have options! While brunch and lunch are amazing, you will definitely look forward to your evenings here. Start off with a little fancy and begin with wine tasting. For $50 a person, you can enjoy an hour of wine flights and a fromage plate (all sourced locally) in the brand new Wine Cellar housing over 1,200 different wines! Afterwards, saunter over to MARE for a Dutch Indonesian Rijsttafel dinner. It’s a completely unique experience. When you’re feeling a little more laid back, head to the Gauguin Grill for some cocktails and beer and start off with charcoal-grilled lobster. For some local musts, throw caution to the wind and go for some comfort food at Auntie Luba’s Belizian Kitchen.

TIP: Indulge in the local plantains –they’re like candy. And come ready to unwind. You are in very good hands.

42

Vacations are meant to be an escape --and an adventure. Want to zip-line in the jungle, go hiking along waterfalls, swim with sea life, charter a boat, trek the Mayan Ruins? You can and your concierge can help. Belize is rich in history, diverse culture, incredible people, and most importantly, nature. From the rainforests to the oceans, it’s no wonder that Francis Ford Coppola set his sights on this beautiful country. With its cinematic backdrop, great food at the ready, and special attention to details, Turtle Inn reminds you why a little “you time” is essential.

Matt McGorry is not your typical Hollywood actor. From his demeanor to his personal style, McGorry carries himself like regular, nice guy you’ve known your whole life. “When it comes to style, I really love comfort,” he says. “When I get home, the first thing that happens is my pants come off, and I just hang out in boxer briefs and tank tops.” Even when he has to dress up for sophisticated events, feeling and looking relaxed is still his top priority. “I don’t like taking a lot of time to get ready, and it’s so nice to have a wardrobe full of clothes I’m comfortable in. While I love wearing a good suit, I usually combine jeans, boots, and t-shirts with a jacket or blazer.” Those staples receive a pop with sunglasses or different trinkets, ranging from ornate pocketknives to necklaces that he’s gathered from around the world. His personal style only scratches the surface of his individualism. He is a renaissance man. Having once deadlifted 576 pounds, the power-lifter-turned-professional-actor now self-identifies as an

intersectional feminist and uses his celebrity status to advocate for social justice issues. “I’m pretty new to this activist work, but it’s very important for me to use my platform to help create positive social progress,” he says. “I also want to point out that there a lot of people who have been doing hard and arduous work for a very long time, and they put themselves on the line much deeper and greater than I do.” McGorry doesn’t want to just be known for making quality entertainment, he wants to lend his voice and join activists trying to permanently change the world. He supported and attended Amber Rose’s Slut Walk in L.A., uses his social media to support the Black Lives Matter movement, and addresses the gender and racial wage gap. As a white male that is outspoken in this activist arena, he sometimes feels he receives a disproportionate amount of attention for speaking out on social injustices that everyone should be challenging.

His unique combination of interests and beliefs translates into his onscreen performances. As both John Bennett in Orange is the New Black and Asher Millstone in How to Get Away with Murder, McGorry brings a compelling depth to characters that traditionally may have been portrayed as two-dimensional meatheads. This talent is not random --he has been honing his acting skills most of his life. “I grew up in New York City, and I started doing magic when I was really young. I went to magic camp, did street magic, and then I eventually went to performing arts camp, where I did some more magic.” When McGorry was in sixth grade, he participated in a production of Cheaper by the Dozen and instantly caught the acting bug. After his freshman year of high school, he decided to transfer to New York City’s acclaimed public performing arts high school, LaGuardia. “At the time, it was a big deal for me to decide to have half of my day be focused on studying drama,” he says, “But, it turned out to be an amazing and life-changing opportunity.” Though he went on to study theater in college, he took a break from acting to channel his energy into personal training and powerlifting. “About five years ago I put the world of competing behind me and decided that I really wanted to refocus on acting,” he says. “I knew that acting is a very difficult business, where even if you’re putting everything into it, nothing is ever guaranteed.” Initially, it was incredibly challenging for him to find an agent and get auditions. He secured a few small parts on shows like Gossip Girl and Royal Pains. Then, his big break came with Orange is the New Black. “When I booked Orange is the New Black, I was only auditioning for about one role a month, and I definitely wasn’t being cast as leads,” he says.

Netflix hadn’t yet produced any original series, so McGorry had no expectations for OITNB. His audition had only required him to say three lines for a possible recurring role. “After each episode, I would get a new script and I would hope that I would be in next episode. I knew the show was special, but it was hard to predict how iconic it would become.” The success of the show was a pivotal launching point for McGorry. Through this role, he says, making a living as an actor went from being a distant fantasy to a reality. His next major project came with How to Get Away with Murder. When McGorry auditioned for the show, the character he read for was only referred to as “Douche Face” in the script. He booked the role, which evolved into the privileged law student Asher Millstone. In this role, McGorry is seen by millions of viewers around the world each week. He also recently shot a cyber stalker film, How We Fell in Love, alongside Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson. The film is being screened in L.A. next month, and McGorry says distributors have been expressing interest. With a list of successful projects already under his belt, the 30-year-old’s future is undeniably filled with bright prospects. But despite his recent string of flourishing projects, he says it’s important for him to stay focused on the present moment. “I love acting in How to Get Away with Murder and getting to be involved in the creative process,” he says. “There are a lot of types of projects that I would be thrilled to do if they happened, especially dark, gritty dramas, superhero movies, or slapstick comedies. At this point, I don’t want to be focused on long-term career goals because I want to be grateful for the opportunities I currently have,” he says. “Hollywood people can be so focused on the next thing that they don’t enjoy the project they’re currently working on. And I certainly don’t want to allow worrying about what’s going to happen later, make or break my happiness now.”

FROM TEXAN TOMBOY TO HOLLYWOOD IN A FLASH CANDICE PATTON IS THE ONE TO WATCH interview by

CHANTAL WALDHOLZ

Gorgeous, talented and driven are just a few ways to describe The Flash star Candice Patton. Fresh off the The CW show’s Season Two finale, which aired May 24, LaPalme had the opportunity to catch up with the Texas native. From making it as an actress in Hollywood to her tomboy style, the extremely humble 27-year-old gave us an inside look at her fabulous, yet low-key lifestyle. As the famous saying goes, you can take the girl out of Texas, but you certainly can’t take the Texas out of the girl.

LAPALME MAGAZINE: What made you want to become an actress?

LM: Who are your style icons and why?

CANDICE PATTON: “I was always interested in theater during school. I just kept going until I made it; there was never really anything else that held my attention as much as acting did.”

CP: “Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, and Blake Lively to name a few. I love classic Hollywood glamour — it’s timeless. When you look back 10 years and see these actresses on the red carpet, their looks are still stunning.”

LM: Tell us about the moment you found out you scored the role of Iris on The Flash. CP: “You get used to hearing “no” as an actor. So when that moment came, it felt like all those years of hard work finally paid off. It was an awesome feeling I’ll never forget.” LM: How are Iris and you similar and different? CP: “She’s a bit more self-assured and braver than I am. I don’t know if I’d let a zombie chase me around for example! But we’re both passionate about our convictions and I think we both believe in doing what is right.” LM: What has been the best moment on set for you so far?

WHITE CROCHET AND COTTON PLACKET TOP BY DI LIBORIO AND KNIT WHITE CROP TOP BY MARIA KE FISHERMAN BOTH AVAILABLE AT www. hlorenzo.com. STONED DROP EARRINGS BY ZAYVER DESIGNS.

CP: “It would have to be shooting the first scene in the pilot with Grant Gustin (Barry Allen / Flash). It was just such a surreal moment to be on the show and finally in production.”

51

LM: How would you describe your style? CP: “My everyday look is casual with a little bit of urban. I love a great sneaker and beanie; I’m a bit of a tomboy in that sense. My clothes on the show are so great, but in my normal life, I keep it very simple. I’m not a person who has the patience for shopping!” LM: When you’re not working on The Flash, what are you focusing on? CP: “We’re so lucky to shoot 23 episodes a season, which takes about nine months of the year. There’s very little downtime to explore other projects, but I am dying to work on a great independent feature. That’s something I have my sights set on next, so hopefully the timing and project works out!”

STEPHON SENEGAL

As a child, Stephon Senegal saw the world in a way that didn’t isolate, but rather tried to understand. Amidst chaos and violence, even in his youth, he was able to see how violence and uncertainty could lend itself to the beauty and process of self-identification in a constructive, uplifting format. Without the money to buy toys he so desperately longed for, his imagination proved to be his greatest ally. Things that seemed insignificant to most kids became the foundation of his art career. Sticks from the nearby woods, leftover materials like electric tape, and random pieces of metal were the perfect tools to make his own childhood play things. It was his curious nature that catapulted him into an artist impossible to silence.

BEAUTY IN CHAOS

A man full of transparency, his work is refreshing and difficult all at once. He is unafraid to ask the viewer to see the darkness that exists within us all, and yet somehow he exposes the light and hope that dwells within each of us. In speaking with Stephon, there is a refreshing honesty. You can sense his inner smile and feel his abandon --a rarity in any artist. Born in Louisiana, his career started at any early age out of necessity. But it was his desire to capture the essence of his work that also gave way to his career in the visual arts. He believes that much like humanity, art is abundant in it’s many layers. Nothing is surfaced nor as dull as it first might appear. Using mixed metals of bronze and steel, drawings, photography, and video as his chosen mediums, the art he produces spurs conversation and gives insight into the rawest form of mankind. They signify change and adaptation.

“There is beauty in the sacrifice required to compete for dominance... the willingness of a person to endure hardship for the members of their clan. There is also beauty in realizing their competitor is battling for the same fruit to feed their child, or wood to provide shelter for their family.”

56

writer

DAWN GARCIA

We spoke to Stephon about his process, what inspires him, and his pieces. In much of his photography, the contrast of beauty and darkness is undeniable. His pieces, when deconstructed, show different cultures grappling for survival, food, life, shelter --all in the name of innocence. We wanted to find out more.

LAPALME MAGAZINE: What word summarizes your work? STEPHON SENEGAL: Aggression. LM : What makes you happy?

YOUR BEST BEACH HAIR

SS: Making others smile. LM: What drew you to create? SS: A childhood without the means to have the basic things a child wants (like toys). When he created his own, it sparked something within him. A longing for more --a need to create and explore. LM: Explain the images with children and carcasses. SS: Taken on the island of Hispaniola, the work captures how violence becomes a tool of necessity when divergent groups vie for control of limited resources. “There is beauty in the sacrifice required to compete for dominance . . . the willingness of a person to endure hardship for the members of their clan. There is also beauty in realizing their competitor is battling for the same fruit to feed their child, or wood to provide shelter for their family.”

For perfectly tousled, beach hair, I suggest using R+Co Conformist Hair Paste [$27] before hitting the ocean. This non-greasy product will hold your style even when you’re crashing into waves. So no need to pack hair gel, just grab your surfboard and go. If you wear your locks long, pull them back into a low man-bun with my fave BLAX® snag-free hair elastics. Beware, the beach can be brutal on your skin and hair. So don't forget to condition and moisturize sun-kissed hair. After shampooing, run some coconut oil through your hair and let it settle for 20 minutes before washing, and watch your hair return to its natural sheen. -beGlammed founder, Maile Pacheco.

The contrast of ideas of rituals and religious dogma, colonization, internal violence and colorism drew Stephon in to explore the concept of “competitive exclusion” and deconstruction among these groups.

2

3

curated by

CHIARA CASIRAGHI

LM: What is the most beautiful element in life?

6

SS: Perception. Perception ensures that “beauty will continue to be elusive and evolve with the prevailing group’s whims.” While the sub-context of his work has undertones of war, sexuality, and warring groups determining their own self-worth, perception is indeed the defining factor.

4

7

SS: What does hope look like? SS: The vastness of a sky at night represents limitless possibilities. You can place your hopes in that. The contrasting materials used in Stephon’s pieces expose structural survival and showcase that we are both primal and fragile. His work invites us to see the beauty in the chaos, the collective consciousness that exists, and that opposing ideas cannot exist without it’s counterpart.
