RIGGING

ASCENDance is an interdisciplinary dance theater work exploring the themes of renewal and transformation in a chaotic world. This multi-media collaboration was such that each component -- movement, sculpture, video, lighting, and music -- influenced the direction of the created art, and was, in turn affected by it. ASCENDance began by developing the depth, complexity, and movement capability of flat planes of paper using folding processes based on origami, an ancient Japanese ceremonial folding practice, to create largescale structures. The structures are a metaphor for the information inundation experienced in the 24/7 news cycle world. Just as information is folded into smaller and smaller bits, compressed into increasingly smaller technological devices, the origami folds contain information about the original unfolded paper that, in its folded state, remain concealed. The dancers use the structures to embody movements of ritual and its antithesis, expressing the dichotomy between personal sanctuary and the kaleidoscopic nature of the contemporary world.

JAN BARTOSZEK – Artistic Statement My goal as a dance artist is to explore essential aspects and mysteries of everyday life and the human experience through movement and to create dances that that transform and illuminate my explorations for audiences. Most of my works are in the half-evening to full evening length range and unfold in a series of episodes. The work addresses such themes as the relationship of the individual to community; the effect on the living by those who have come before; the transient nature of memory; aging/ loss; sensuality/sexuality; and, metamorphoses/transformation. What is most meaningful to me is working with inquisitive and reflective dancers who share my passion for the exchange of ideas, movement experimentation and theatrical discovery---the serendipitous magic that occurs when minds and bodies are focused on a common purpose. Throughout my career I have had a sustained interest in creating rich visual and aural environments on stage that cast the dancers in a specific time/space. I continue to be engaged by the intersection of movement and objects. Movement transforms objects, animating the inanimate; and, objects lend poetic imagery to movement. To this end, I have collaborated with scores of artists--including sculptors, video artists, painters, photographers, costume designers, landscape architects, and composers---to create sublime immersive landscapes that transport movement into a new realm. Hedwig Dances is a contemporary dance theater ensemble celebrating its 31st year under the artistic direction of its founder, Jan Bartoszek. Named after Ms. Bartoszek’s paternal grandmother, Hedwig Dances’ bold, interdisciplinary collaborations combine poetic choreography with sculptural artifacts, projected images and haunting original music. Hedwig Dances has performed more than 1,500 times, including international tours to Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Honduras and Mexico; and performances in the United States at numerous festivals, theaters and colleges, such as Yes, Virginia Dance Invitational (Richmond, Virginia); Spring to Dance® Festival (St. Louis, Missouri); and two exclusive engagements at Joyce SoHo (NYC). For three decades, Hedwig Dances has performed at venues throughout Chicago, including the Ravinia Festival, The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Athenaeum Theatre, and has been spotlighted at noteworthy events, such as the grand openings of Millennium Park and Navy Pier. From 1992-2011 under the administration of Commissioner Lois Weisberg, Hedwig Dances served as the Dance Company In-Residence at the Chicago Cultural Center, showcasing the Company’s choreography and establishing an extensive program of dance performance and education. Hedwig Dances is currently an Artist-In-Residence at The Ruth Page Center for the Arts and a partner in FlySpace, a think tank for contemporary movement practice and performance. The Company has received two Ruth Page Awards and a Chicago Dance Award.
