SPOTLIGHT X FILMS Three short films explore the past and future of the Civil Rights movement in America. Featuring: The Road to Little Rock, Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot, Code Oakland. Runtime: 90 MIN
Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot Director: Bill Brummel The Joint: Thurs, May 14, 2015 5:30pm - 7:30pm
The story of a courageous group of Alabama students and teachers, who along with other activists, fight a nonviolent battle to win voting rights for African Americans in the South. Standing in their way - a century of Jim Crow, a resistant and segregationist state, and a federal government slow to fully embrace equality. They would face intimidation, violence, jail and even murder, to achieve one of the most significant victories of the civil rights era.
Road to Little Rock
Director: Art Phillips The Joint: Thurs, May 14, 2015 5:30pm - 7:30pm This is the courageous story of one judge and nine teenagers who demonstrated enduring positive human qualities of courage, honor, determination, and responsibility. In 1957, nine African-American teenagers sought enrollment at an all-white high school in Little Rock, Arkansas. This untold story features never-before-seen interviews with three members of the Little Rock Nine and Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. It blends current interviews with archival footage to tell the story of the integration of Central High School. Federal Judge Ronald Davies, from Fargo, North Dakota, followed the law, ignored political pressure and required the school district in Little Rock to integrate. His ruling provided great urgency for the desegregation of public schools and the course of the civil rights movement in America.
Code Oakland
Director: Kelly Amis The Joint: Thurs, May 14, 2015 5:30pm - 7:30pm As Silicon Valley spreads into Oakland in search of cheaper real estate, local social entrepreneurs are working to ensure that black youth not be left on the sidelines, but instead become leaders and even transformers of the tech revolution. But is Silicon Valley ready to be hacked?

CINEMATIC X NON FICTION There is something happening in documentary. Adventurous filmmakers are taking cues from great movies of the past to create uninhibited work that is redefining nonfiction cinema. Curated by Robert Greene.
Breaking a Monster
93 MIN Director: Luke Meyer CALS Ron Robinson Theater: Thurs, May 14, 2015 1:00pm | Fri, May 15, 2015 5:30pm This rock n roll story of teenage African American metal band Unlocking the Truth and their white, old school manager Alan Sacks is sharp, precise and finely-tuned where many music documentaries are fatuous and self-congratulating. Veteran filmmaker Luke Meyer (Darkon) finds just the right observational moments to visually articulate the kids’ gloriously complex rise through the music industry. Meanwhile, the badass trio of 7th graders that make up the band manage to look wiser and cooler than everyone else. This is fun, perfectly crafted nonfiction cinema.
I Am the People
110 MIN Director: Anna Roussillon CALS Ron Robinson Theater: Tues, May 12, 2015 11:15am | Friday May 15, 2015 10:30am A look at the tumultuous events of Egypt’s revolutionary recent past from the point of view of a family living far from Tahir Square, I AM THE PEOPLE is a profound act of cinematic humanism. Few films have so deftly placed world-altering political upheavals in the context of real people’s lives the way Roussillon’s first feature does. Villagers work, make bread to eat and then sharply debate the potential consequences of Mubarak’s fall and the election of Morsi, which all plays out on their TV’s. Roussillon’s eye for unexpected beauty and her easy, playful, sometimes feisty relationship with her subjects make this one of the most radical, quietly surprising debuts in recent memory.
Of Men and War
142 MIN Director: Laurent Bécue-Renard Clinton School of Public Service: Tues, May 12, 2015 5:30pm | A staggering, masterful achievement, Bécue-Renard’s portrait of a California treatment center for PTSD-afflicted veterans of the Iraq war is patient, understated and emotionally dense. The film uses clear-eyed observation to place us in the room with these battered, proud men as they undergo psychological care. The exchanges are tense and always revelatory, but never clichéd. We also step out of the treatment room to witness the effects of war on the men’s families and broader lives. Never before have the effects of combat been presented in such an authentic, empathetic and impactful way.
Sweaty Betty
93 MIN Director: Joe Frank & Zack Reed Butler Center: Fri, May 15, 2015 8:00pm | Stickyz: Saturday May 16, 2015 10:00am Is this film a sly prank? Is it the most amateurish movie to ever play the venerated SXSW Film Festival? Or is it a radical, handmade act of artistic defiance meant to reclaim a seemingly lost independent film aesthetic? That I don’t know the answer intrigues, frustrates and ultimately excites me. This sincere, messy, documentary/fiction whatsit manages to humanize characters that often get portrayed in the simplest, most destructive ways. It also looks like it was dropped from the sky untouched, like a found piece of (barely) edited home movie, magically imbued with a strange, living, everyday poetry. Two single, African American fathers get a dog. Two others in their neighborhood have a giant pig.
(T)error
93 MIN Director: Lyric R. Cabral, David Felix Sutcliffe Butler Center: Friday May 15, 2015 1:00pm | CALS Ron Robinson Theater: Sat, May 16, 2015 1:30pm Cabral and Sutcliffe’s award-winning debut feature is equal parts riveting cinematic narrative and shocking work of investigative journalism. The film tells the unbelievable story of Saeed “Shariff” Torres, an FBI informant with a dark past, who begins to track a man his bosses think is a potential domestic terrorist. That the film even exists is perhaps a miracle of serendipity, that it becomes such a complex, troubling, infuriating, ambiguous, mesmerizing experience is due to the clarity, resourcefulness and intelligence of the filmmaking. CINEMATIC X NON FICTION The Chinese Mayor
89 MIN Director: Hao Zhou CALS Ron Robinson Theater: Wed, May 13, 2015 11:30am | Butler Center: Fri, May 15, 2015 10:30am A nearly-unprecedented glimpse into local Chinese politics, Hao’s film is subtly self-aware, low-key and quietly devastating. With unbelievable access, Hao follows Datong mayor Geng Yanbo as he attempts to work against the system, amidst controversy and constant setbacks, to reimagine one of China’s most polluted cities. When the mayor’s ambition meets the realities of a poor and desperate population, a camera is improbably present, giving is an illuminating and essential view of China from the ground view. World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award For Unparalleled Access
Tired Moonlight
76 MIN Director: Britni West Butler Center: Wed, May 13, 2015 5:30pm | Thursday May 14, 2015 3:45pm Friday May 15, 2015 1:00pm West’s first feature, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance, is a strange and glorious mix of idiosyncratic fiction, observational landscape documentary and bad poetry that is as fun as it is unclassifiable. Burnt-beautiful and flowing like a kinky creek, this 16mm portrait of West’s hometown in Montana is an affecting reminder that cinema can and should be the territory of the artist creating new forms by capturing and editing the particular world she inhabits. It may be called a “hybrid” by some, but no other film in recent memory demonstrates more beautifully that the divide between fiction and documentary is often meaningless. Best Narrative Feature, Slamdance Film Festival
Uncertain
82 MIN Director: Anna Sandilands and Ewan McNicol Butler Center: Wed, May 13, 2015 8:00pm | CALS Ron Robinson Theater: Thurs, May 14, 2015 3:45pm UNCERTAIN is a film about the multifaceted, complicated and sometimes hilarious relationship between man and nature. Uncertain, Texas is a town in between things, a place where people go to escape from their past... or try desperately to leave. In the middle of Uncertain is a body of swampy water, the lifeblood of a town already barely hanging on, which is being choked by an out-of-control botanical pest. Sandilands and McNicol masterfully weave many characters’ stories together and find pathos, humor and warmth in the midst of desperate times for this strange, wonderful place. UNCERTAIN is a kind of character-driven, environmental tone poem. Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award, Tribeca Film Festival Eligible for the Arkansas Times Southern Film Award
Western
92 MIN Director: Bill Ross and Turner Ross Clinton School of Public Service: Thurs, May 14, 2015 6:00pm The Ross brothers’ third film, like their previous two (45365 and TCHOUPITOULAS), is a patient and poetic study of a place that plays like an immersive, if understated, work of literature. Taking place on the US-Mexico border, in a town called Eagle Pass, Texas, WESTERN conjures the symbols of the old shootout genre, yet remains tethered to the vivid now. At once a tuneful song, a subtly entrancing narrative and a smart observational portrait, WESTERN confirms the Rosses as being among the most important filmmaking teams in America. Like a concert you never want to end, our trip to Little Rock was amazing. We loved the local music at South on Main, and enjoyed several great meals as we explored the city’s eclectic neighborhoods and shops. With a rich and diverse local music scene and a vibrant arts community, Little Rock is a city to be savored. The city has a new Southern style and charm that’s uniquely its own – and we experienced it all in Little Rock.

TURBO KID
Directors: Anouk Whissell, François Simard & Yoann-Karl Whissell CALS Ron Robinson Theater: Sun, May 17, 2015 7:00pm “It’s only fitting that a film about the end of the world should close out the end of the festival. Turbo Kid boasts blood, BMX, and bizarre characters in an apocalyptic wasteland that is destined to be a cult classic. RKSS (Roadkill Superstar) directors Anouk Whissell, François Simard and YoannKarl Whissell confidently display their love for the genre while creating a wholly original work through a classic hero narrative, catchy 80s synth soundtrack, and innovative and often hilarious gory VFX. SATURDAY, MAY 16 HARRY THOMASON PRESENTS A 10TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR SCREENING OF “THE HUNTING OF THE PRESIDENT” 12:30pm Clinton School of Public Service
There can be no doubt that we live in one of the most tumultuous political climates of the nation’s history, a climate where politicians can be toppled on a whim, election results disputed in the country’s highest courts, and governors unceremoniously recalled. It’s enough to leave even the most cynical voter asking, how did this happen?
CINEMATIC NON-FICTION: ART AGAINST EXPECTATIONS IN NONFICTION 2:30pm Filmmakers Lounge 2
Documentaries that push against expectations of form have become commonplace on the film festival circuit and with audiences looking for something more than standard nonfiction. The need for artful storytelling is now somewhat taken for granted. So to stand out and to give their subjects and stories the best and biggest possible audiences, filmmakers are finding new ways to push against boundaries and formal conventions. Robert Greene will moderate a discussion about cinematic nonfiction with documentary journalist Eric Hynes and the directors of the artfully journalistic (T)ERROR, the smartly constructed BREAKING A MONSTER and the wildly experimental SWEATY BETTY.
