01 HUMANITARIAN ASSOCIATION Work from Architectural design studio for restoration and transformation of complex constructions Instructor: Prof. Giulio Massimo Barazzetta etc. October - June 2020 - 2021 in Politecnico di Milano Co-work with Iuliia Usenko Semester 2

This one-year studio is the most important part of the graduate program. In the first half of the semester, I mainly researched and learned the related knowledge of heritage protection and surveyed and mapped the buildings of the Humanitarian Association and proposed protection methods. In the second half of the semester, new structures were placed on the basis of research to improve the use of the entire building.

Masterplan The Società Umanitaria is a city block in Milan which is defined by San Barnaba, Francesco Daverio, Pace and Manfredo Fanti streets. The site is a synthesis complex with the 15th Century Cloister System of the classic era and Romano’s buildings of the modern era. In order to update this building to meet the needs of the Humanitarian Association in the current era, we redesigned the pavilion in the courtyard to redefine the main entrance of the building, and discovered and expanded the underground space to form an exhibition space for public use. The renewal is based on the premise of protection. We try our best to show the relics left in the building in various historical periods and respect and use them to start new designs, and the new part and the old part are clearly marked.

New interventions in Cloisters The first courtyard defined at the new entrance is the first impression of people entering the Humane Attention Society. In the current situation, this courtyard is relatively closed, and there is no entrance directly connected to the garden. Therefore, we try to open the exit to the large garden without destroying the original colonnade, which will create a new streamline and enhance the use experience. After removing part of the wall, the new structure needs to be reinforced. We put the new structure in a different way from the original building, which not only retains the original mechanism, but also unabashedly retains the traces of transformation. With the addition of the new entrance, people can see the interior of the courtyard in the garden. Next to this new passage is the entrance to the newly placed basement, which will lead visitors to explore the basement exhibition space. On the other hand, in the function of the ground floor, we mainly arrange the library and cafeteria serving the public. Therefore, we hope that these spaces can present a more open and transparent attitude. Our strategy was to expand the size of the opening on the basis of the existing door opening and insert new glass windows. This move did not disrupt the existing structure, but effectively increased the visibility of the indoor and outdoor spaces, giving the public a glimpse of what the Humane Society is doing and increasing the possibility of future participation.

8

Development and utilization of underground space The original basement below the monastery has a low floor height. In order to meet the needs of the reconstructed use, the net height of the basement was deepened in the design, and ventilation and heating systems were added at the same time. In order to reduce the depressive atmosphere in the basement, we installed a wire-mounted skylight, along with the newly installed steel structure system. Below the middle courtyard, we added an open and connected underground exhibition hall, which can display the history of the building itself and the humanitarian association. Such an are a is iconic and commemorative, so on the ground, we use a simple and pure glass box as the main entrance of the underground space.

9

Sight analysis

Purposed analysis

At the entrance connecting the atrium to the garden, this was once a bombed-out building. During the restoration in the fifties, the building debris of this part was removed and a new office building was built on the west side. Here the space is stripped out and forms the main entrance of the Humane Society. We are inspired by Filippo Brunelleschi, who first applied the rule of perspective in painting. When we decided to open the garden on the north side to the public and build a new main entrance, it will serve as the entrance and exit for the staff of the Humane Society, and also assume the responsibility of connecting the courtyard and the garden. of the Humane Society. This space is the intersection of history and modernity, and it is also the continuation of the basement space in the physical and spiritual sense.

10

Technology details The focus of technical design is to solve the problem of increasing the height of the basement. In order to maintain the identity of the original building, we retained the original arch structure as much as possible and strengthened it. In the construction, the new foundation and retaining wall are firstly set up with micropipes, then part of the original floor slab is removed, then a new steel structure is placed to support the original system, and finally the old retaining wall is removed.

11

Translation of the existing system into a temporary pavilion By studying several facades of different ages, we analyze the proportional control and use this principle to design the facades of newly placed structures.

Design of the pavilion Societa Umanitaria had a plan to build a small pavilion in the garden on the intersection of Via Francesco and Via Barnaba as far back to 1950s. The goal of the design is to use contemporary language to realize the original plan, while opening a new entrance, as a landmark to attract potential tourists. It is a structural system whose structure and function can be easily changed with demand.

02 Commercial and Residential Design in Iran Intership in WT Studio, Milano Instructor: Arch. Chiara Cantono, 2021.11-2022.4 November 2021- April 2022 in WT Studio Professional work

This project is a commercial and residential complex in Iran commissioned by Lamborghini. The client expects this design to highlight both the luxury brand characteristics of Lamborghini and the regional characteristics of Islam. WT Studio is a small cpmpany with three people and I worked with Arch. Chiara on this project.

14

Symbolize the brand logo Bull is an important brand image of Lamborghini and a spiritual totem that often appears in Iranian culture. We chose this element for transformation, turning it into the most important decorative element in the façade, enhancing the recognizability of the building and highlighting the Lamborghini brand value. The newly created components accentuate the sports car ethos with strong lines, and we also incorporated the small Lamborghini logo into it. When these components are arranged in an orderly manner, it will form a very luxurious and dense effect, which to some extent fits the geometric patterns in Islamic culture.

15

Inspired by the arch and wheel

We have designed several versions for the client to choose from, one of which combines elements of the arch, which is both a common element in traditional Iranian architecture and symbolizes the wheels of a Lamborghini sports car. The delineation of the profiled windows is inspired by Lamborghini's unique wheels. We tried to maximize the Lamborghini brand identity. We use hollow metal plates for the shutters of the windows, and the patterns in them are also derived from traditional Islamic architecture. The gorgeous luster brought by the metal is also a reflection of the brand's identity. In another version of the design, the windows are completely covered with hollow metal panels to act as shading, and sunlight through the metal panels will create complex and changeable light and shadow to bring some decorative elements in traditional Iranian architecture. similar effect.

03 HIGH-RISE STUDENT HOUSING Work from Laboratory of architectural design for complex constructions Instructor: G. Zuliani etc. March - June 2020 in Politecnico di Milano Co-work with Sun yuyang, Wang ziyue, Ol uwaseyi Oladipupo Oladimeji Semester 1

If a city is to be considered more than the simple accretion of individual buildings and people, what could make a contemporary architectural artefact urban in nature? With this question in mind, within the whole of the instrumentations, techniques and forms of representation that together with the structural, programmatic and technical components determine the complex system that is the architectural project, it has been our choice to assign to the tool of the section the primary role as generator of the design process. Within this process the instrument of the section, simultaneously an analytic as well as a projective tool, will be assumed at two different scales.

18

Design concept

The design integrates student apartments and civic activity spaces, aiming to increase students' participation in urban life and enhance students' sense of belonging through the form of architecture. Therefore, we chose to organize the diverse functions through a high-rise complex. In order to form a good interaction with the city park, we let the main road of the park pass through the ground floor of the building. While bringing the building close to the traffic road, we have left enough space for temporary fairs and exhibitions. This building is not only a place of accommodation for students, but also a venue for activities that citizens can enter. The encounter between the two will create rich possibilities.

Design for the block Only when a group lives in a common space where chance encounters often occur, can they have a deep connection and a sense of belonging. However, the number of people who can be acquainted with is limited, so we limit each unit to about 50 people, and each unit shares an open atrium. In the atrium, you can have meetings, study, encounter, and daze. At the same time, every two units are connected by a platform supported by truss, which also provides space for outdoor activities.

04 RINGSCAPE The challenging urban regeneration of Milano Porta Romana rail yard Instructor: José María Sánchez García January 2021 in Politecnico di Milano Group work Semester 2

This work belong to MIAW, which is the international workshop hold by Polimi. In response to the Olympic Games in Milan in 2026, a series of urban transformations will be carried out. This site used to be a railway and will become a very important urban green space in the planning. In three weeks, we designed a prototype of the regional urban design in response to the desire for sustainable development.

24

Background and goals of the design

The “'Porta Romana” urban transformation area will be characterized by the presence of an urban park intended as an integral part of the “Collana Verde” green system in the south of the city ensu- ring an east-west crossing of Milan. The park, with partial coverage of the tracks, will be also able to ensure the north-south permeability between the areas disconnected by the railway station. The connection to the system of both existing and planned parks, thanks to pedestrian and cycle con- nections, will allow the weaving of a widespread green network in the area surrounding the railway yard. The public space will design the areas of land concentration in which will be promoted the realization of different functions related to the university system. The area's great accessibility is guaranteed by the railway station and the Lodi TIBB metro station, as well as the new rail link to the “'Viale Circolare” system.

25

Generation of the shape

Boundary control

Multi-connectivity

The design strategy is to form the largest area of parks and green spaces, so the main buildings are placed on the edge of the site as much as possible. The layout of the building also pays tribute to the mechanism of the city and the surrounding important historical buildings. We designed the running railway into a semi-underground form to ensure the safety of pedestrians and tourists, while also showing people the past history and memory of this area. In order to distinguish different activities in the park, we set up a huge circular structure in the center of the site, which defines the gathering of people and the diverse activities that may occur in the future. In order to avoid the inconvenience caused by rail transit, we set up a itinerary array bridge to connect the two sides of the rail. It is also a unique and iconic part of the park.

05 A TEACHING BUILDING Work from Architectutal construction studio Instructor: Brunetti Gian Luca, Boffi Giacomo, Scaioni Marco September - December 2019 in Politecnico di Milano Co-work with Wang Yiwei, Laurent Axel, Jolomi Usman Semester 1

The objective of this studio is to integrate structural, technological and environmental considerations into the building design process. This objective will be pursued by cultivating the capacity of supporting design decisions in all design phases and at all scales with an at least approximate, preliminary awareness of their consequences on building performances and, more broadly speaking, of the advantages and disadvantages linked to the available design options.

28

Requirement of the design The design objective of the Studio is to design a building with teaching rooms and spaces for study, within the campus of the Politecnico in detail while integrating the project in the broader context. The building should be able to host lectures and untutored and self-organized study activity by the students. The design area is located between via Bonardi, via Golgi and the building of the Department of Electronics within the area of the Politecnico, as shown in the plan. The suggested area for placing the building is about correspondent with the present position of the volleyball field, but also different placements may be taken into account, within the red borders drawn in the plan.

06 RENOVATION OF A RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY

This project is based on the decaying block, which is losing its native people day by day in the famous tourist attraction, Kulangsu island, in the south of China. The old blocks were built from 1840s to 1970s, which is a long period and in different styles. Some of s are belong to the world heritage. However, with the increase of tourism, the living condition of the native people is worse and worse, many people move out of the island for better job opportunities and more livable environment. So the key of the problem is to provide a better environment for the local without destroying the heritages.

Perspective of residents' life scenes

Organization of different functions

The mixing of diverse functions is a prerequisite for the vitality of the community. In a small circle, residents know each other well, so it is easier to stimulate diverse activities, and the community is therefore more vibrant and safe.

The type of business in the community should focus on improving the quality of community living. The types of businesses that can be added include vegetable markets, people’s livelihood supermarkets, books, newspapers, community art center clinic diagnosis, maintenance services, etc.

The Art Kindergarten was moved to the Xiamen island due to the policy of residents moving out of Gulangyu in the 1990s. In order to restore the artistic atmosphere of Gulangyu Island, it should be restored.

The tradition of family concerts can rely on the existence of community concerts. Convenient piano room, suitable stage, and performance venue serving the community provide the possibility for community concerts to occur.

community center residential community musicl school vegetable mrket & shops neighborhood committee

The original community activity center is not closely connected with the community, and is divided by high walls and streets. Gulangyu's aging situation is very serious, and it is necessary to provide a more open and more participatory activity center for the elderly.

07 RING INSIDE BARN HOUSES

This project located in a village called Deqing near Hangzhou. The houses that are built during the culture revolution are not suitable for the original residents because of the change of lifestyle. However, they are preserved well and have already become a symbol of the village because of their long shape. In most villages in Zhejiang, the residents are the aged and children under 13 because the village can not provide enough education or jobs for the young. To activate the old buildings and provide a public place for children and their grandparents, a primary school is designed to meet these needs.

Generation of the shape

Structure of the bamboo gallery low-techology & eco-friendly

Circle is a symbol of equality and harmonious in traditional Chinese culture and it is one of the best ways to connect the old building and the new functions for it breaks the old system at a minimal level and provide the new function at a maximal level. Fujian Tulou is one of the forms of traditional Chinese buildings and it can have a good connection with the original buildings for they are all in the same style, so it is a good resource to learn the form from.

Bamboo is very universal and cheap in Zhejiang Province, China. The locals have a good knowledge of bamboo craft and once the architect determine the shape of the roof, they can easily weave the bamboo structure by themselves. Besides that, bamboo is ecofriendly and can bring the beautiful shadows.

Sometimes it is not easy to build a regular shape in rural area in China because it is hard to find qualified workers there. The villagers have their own ways to build their house and maybe their works are not exquisite but useful. The transform of the circular roof can hide more deviations compared with a regular shape, which also show the beauty of handmade. It is a good chance to reunion the villagers when they build the new primary school together and only in that way, they see the new building as their work instead of the display of architects.

08 CO-WORKING OFFICE A high rise office design in Hangzhou Instructor: Qin Luofeng qinluofeng@163.com October - December 2018 in Zhejiang University Personal work Semester 9

This project located in the crossroad of Gudun Road and Shenhua Road, which are both crowded main roads in Hangzhou. In this studio, students were asked to design an office building and follow the local construction laws strictly. To provide opening and low-price office for the young entrepreneur, I decided to design a co-working office. It is a mixed-used building which users may be freelancer, small companies, medium-sized companies, students, after-class teachers and any other people who needs a place to work, learn, talk or share.

North Facade The key point of the co-working place is the large courtyard, where people sit on the stairs and concentrate on their own things and at the same time, they watch others and be watched by others. It is a place to promote communication and sharing. Besides that, it also connects the high-rise and the four-floor building. The office is a stage to the public and the rode surrounding the building provides a good pace to watch people inside. Everyone is an actor in the co-working office and the stage will attract people to explore the building.

09 CONCRETE APPROXIAMTION Moudular Screen Design with concrete

Instructor: Oiever Ottevaere otteva@hku.hk Workshop in Zhejiang University, 2018.9-2018.12 Semester 9 Co-work with Liu Yaxi, Huang Hanyi In the teamwork, Zhao is in charge of designing the shape in computer and blending the concrete while Liu and Huang are in charge of designing the mold.

The proposed course is a (hands-on) workshop based seminar supported by a series of case-study lectures where students will explore procedural logics of making that expand on and revisit initial design premises from a series of physical explorations at incrementing scales.

50

Form Finding The workshop focused on the conception and fabrication of modular screens. Walls that breathe and shade are an architectural element of significance in various climates, often referred to as ventilation blocks. Learning from the analysis of key precedents from different cultures, students will initially conceive a module with a partial opening; qualitatively filtering light and air while quantitatively able to repeat into an efficient modular system.
