Michigan Governor Rick Snyder Commends MTEC Smartzone For Achieving 10-Year Milestone Michigan Governor Rick Snyder paid a special visit to MTEC SmartZone on Monday to commemorate the business incubator’s decade-long achievements in job creation and positive economic impact in the Keweenaw.

Snyder addressed a crowd of about 100 gathered at the Lakeshore Center in Houghton, in celebration of MTEC SmartZone’s 10-year anniversary. He praised the efforts of both MTEC SmartZone CEO Marilyn Clark and Michigan Technological University President Glenn Mroz for partnering to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem where entrepreneurs receive support to start and grow companies successfully.

Snyder closed the celebration by presenting Clark with a 10-year birthday proclamation.

Also in attendance for the celebration Monday were U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, State Senator Tom Casperson and State Representative Scott Dianda.

Duane was formerly a Board Member with the Chamber of Commerce, representing Finlandia University. His position has been filled by Karin Van Dyke, Director of Human Resources for Finlandia.

Summit Of Brockway Mountain Now Owned

By Eagle Harbor Township The summit of Brockway Mountain and the surrounding 320 acres, now owned by Eagle Harbor Township, were dedicated August 13th, 2013. Through partnership with Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District, The Nature Conservancy, Copper Country Audubon, and Keweenaw Land Trust the purchase was finalized in February of this year. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder was in attendance to unveil the new sign as well as many partners that helped to purchase the parcel.

Charter, Hallmark Channel, and Michigan Tech Employees Federal Credit Union Spearhead “Operation School Supplies� for Houghton Area Children The first day of school can be challenging for any child, however, it can be especially challenging for students who arrive empty-handed. Operation School Supplies was created to make certain that all children in our schools have what they need for their school work. A nationwide partnership between Charter Communications, Charter Media, and Hallmark Channel, Operation School Supplies collects basic classroom materials; giving each child the tools they will need to learn.

Michigan Tech Employees Federal Credit Union, 700 E. Sharon Ave, Houghton, is serving as a drop site for Operation School Supplies and will collect donations at their Houghton and Pelkie locations until September 22.

Hancock, Michigan (August 6, 2013) – The Portage Health Board of Directors has signed a definitive agreement to form a joint venture with LifePoint Hospitals®.

The agreement, which includes $60 million in capital investments over the next 10 years by the new joint venture, would allow Portage Health to expand and enhance its services to better meet the healthcare needs of its communities.

“We are delighted to take the next step in our potential joint venture with LifePoint,” said Steve Zutter, chairman of the Portage Health board. “As we have explored this partnership, our board has become even more excited about the benefits that becoming part of LifePoint will bring our communities. This joint venture offers Portage Health opportunities not only to expand and enhance the care we provide, but transform healthcare provided throughout the region.”

Under the terms of the definitive agreement, Portage Health and LifePoint would jointly own and operate Portage Health and its affiliated assets. LifePoint would own 80 percent of the joint venture, while Portage Health would have a 20 percent ownership stake. In addition to the $60 million in capital investments by the joint venture, approximately $40 million would be used to create a locally governed charitable foundation to fund organizations that support crucial community needs.

“LifePoint is very pleased to have reached this important milestone in our proposed partnership with Portage Health,” said LifePoint Hospital’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer William F. Carpenter III. “We have enjoyed working with the Portage Health team and learning more about the hospital and the important role it plays in the U.P. We are excited at the prospect of becoming part of this community and working with Portage Health to find ways to make the Western Upper Peninsula healthier.”

eight-member governing board with equal representation from Portage Health and LifePoint would be established.

Through this joint venture, we have great opportunities not only to make Portage Health an even better place to work and receive quality care, but to strengthen and shape the future of healthcare in the Western Upper Peninsula.”

The definitive agreement is subject to review by the Attorney General of Michigan before being finalized.

Finlandia’s Sibelius Fest Is September 22 to 27

The 15th annual Sibelius Academy Music Festival will be presented by Finlandia University from September 22 to September 27, 2013, in metropolitan Chicago and the western Upper Peninsula.

This year’s festival features classical/contemporary accordionist Ari Lehtonen, a doctoral student at the Sibelius Academy. Ari’s performance program includes the keyboard music of J.S. Bach, works by contemporary Finnish composers, and compositions by Argentine nuevo tango composer Ástor Piazzolla (1921-1992).

BHK And GLCYD Partner To Provide Free Training Creating A Lean Culture In Your Organization

The festival also features the ensemble “August Saarinen & Vuolas Virta,” a jazz/folk quintet that pays tribute to the “king of Finnish tango” Olavi Virta (1915-1972). The musicians are Joonas Mikkilä, Juho Vanamo, Matias Mäntyranta, Miiko Renfors, and Joonas Tuhkanen.

The festival’s series of concerts and events begins Sunday, September 22, with an afternoon performance of both acts at the Estonian House of Chicago, Riverwoods, Ill. On Tuesday, September 24, at 1:15 p.m., the students at Negaunee (Michigan) High School will enjoy a special Sibelius Festival performance in the high school’s auditorium. The concert is open to the public; tickets are $5.00.

Tuesday, September 24, at 7:00 p.m., a free Meet the Musicians event will be presented at the Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock. The musicians will discuss their lives as musicians, and present informal performances.

On Thursday, September 26, at 2:00 p.m., accordionist Ari Lehtonen will present a concert at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Hancock. A freewill offering at the concert will benefit Finlandia University music programs.

Also September 26, the first-ever Sibelius Festival folk dance starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center. The dance features live music by the festival musicians. Tickets are $10.00; Finlandia students attend free.

The final concert is on Friday, September 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Calumet (Mich.) Theatre. Both the accordionist and the jazz/folk quintet will present performances. Tickets are $15.00; Finlandia students attend free.

Bike Initiative Keweenaw To Promote Biking as Transportation Throughout The Keweenaw Community Dear Keweenaw Community Members, Several months ago, a group of cyclists, bike commuters and health advocates gathered to gauge interest in forming a local group to advocate biking as a transportation option in the Keweenaw. As sufficient need and enthusiasm were demonstrated, we are excited to announce the formation of Bike Initiative Keweenaw (BIKE!).

The mission of BIKE! is “to empower people to ride bikes more often� through: 1. Education and Community Outreach: Increase awareness about biking and educate bikers, pedestrians and drivers.

2. Encouragement: Promote biking as a transportation choice.

3. Advocacy & Regional Development: Provide a voice for cycling in local and regional public planning and policy development. ln a community of active recreational cycling, we imagine BIKE! complementing ongoing bike-related efforts by encouraging biking as a form of transportation, and promoting an infrastructure that is safe for biking to school, work, downtown and the trailhead.

This year, BIKE! has already coordinated another successful Bike to Work Week in May. We are also encouraging all forms of cycling through local participation in the National Bike Challenge from IVIay through September, planning a bicycle safety training session and creating a regional bike map. “Michigan’s uninsured citizens are entitled to health care today,” noted Block. “This access happens in our state’s emergency rooms, which is the most costly and inefficient form of providing care.

“This delivery model results in uncompensated care costs being shifted from hospitals to insurers to private health insurance purchasers, including employers,” continued Block. “Medicaid reform makes sound economic sense because it will ultimately reduce the uncompensated care costs shift and control the upward spiral of health insurance rates.”

Michigan Chamber Of Commerce Applauds Senate Passage Of Medicaid Reform Legislation LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Chamber of Commerce today applauded the bipartisan passage of legislation to reform Michigan’s Medicaid program and provide insurance access to the uninsured. House Bill 4714, introduced by Representative Matt Lori (R-Constantine), passed the Michigan Senate late yesterday, August 27th, by a vote of 20 to 18. The legislation will now go to the State House for a concurrence vote, which would send the bill to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

“We commend members of the Michigan Senate for working in a bipartisan fashion throughout the summer to fine-tune and strengthen the House-passed Medicaid reform legislation,” said Wendy Block, Director of Health Policy and Human Resources for the Michigan Chamber.

“While this issue has been controversial, the final legislation is a fiscally responsible solution to a tough issue – one that presents a real and unique opportunity to bend the overall health care cost curve and lessen the impact of Obamacare.”

“Medicaid reform also will help employers control their costs under Obamacare,” Holcomb added.

“Without this legislation, an analysis by the tax preparation experts at Jackson-Hewitt suggests employers will pay $54-81 million in ‘pay or play’ penalties under Obamacare.

Economically, this makes sense for both employees and job providers.” Holcomb concluded.

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is a statewide business organization representing approximately 6,400 employers, trade associations and local chambers of commerce. The Michigan Chamber represents businesses of every size and type in all 83 counties of the state.

“Make no mistake: The Michigan Chamber remains strongly opposed to Obamacare and we fought all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to stop it,” said Jim Holcomb, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for the Michigan Chamber. “However, Obamacare is the law of the land and our members believe passing Medicaid reform is good policy that makes sense for all of Michigan.”

It is the mission of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce to: SUPPORT: The Chamber supports businesses by providing information and referring inquiries to our partners like Keweenaw Economic Development Association, Small Business and Technology Development Center, MTEC SmartZone, Entrepreneur Support Center, Jutila Business Incubator or whichever organization is best to assist that business.

ATTRACT: The Chamber also provides information and referrals to people wanting to visit or relocate here. If someone wants to inquire about tourism, we send them directly to the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau. And whether someone is relocating a business or family here, we will continue to send them to the appropriate community resource(s) that will meet their need(s).

DEVELOP BUSINESS: The Chamber is going to continue growing networking and visibility opportunities for small businesses. We will continue to provide ribbon cuttings, promotion, Eggs and Issues, golf outings, and a monthly newsletter.
