FinnFest USA 2013 In 15 Days!

From June 19-23, 2013 the Keweenaw Peninsula will be hosting FinnFest USA 2013, a celebration of Finnish and Finnish-American culture and heritage.

The five day event will bring thousands of visitors to the area and will feature music, dances, presentations, lectures, historic and cultural tours, and the famous Tori marketplace. Centered at the Student Development Complex at Michigan Tech, there will be events at Finlandia University, throughout Houghton and Hancock, as well as special events and evenings in Calumet, Copper Harbor, and a midsummer “Juhannus” bonfire in Toivola. Special events at this FinnFest include an attempt to break the Guinness World record in Nordic Walking on Saturday June 22, and a one day Education Forum on Wednesday June 19 highlighting Finland’s world-renowned education system. On Wednesday the 19th there will also be the Finnfest USA 2013 Business and Technology Forum aimed at creating business cooperation between Finland and the USA. The opening ceremony will be broadcast live by WLUC TV6 from the Rozsa Center for Performing Arts in Houghton in addition to special segments from the Tori marketplace on Finland Calling with Carl Pellonpaa.

GS Engineering Receives Prestigious Tibbett Award HOUGHTON – Karen Mills, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) today honored eighteen nationwide high–tech small businesses and three individuals in Washington, D.C. They were honored for the critical role they play in research and development for the government, for their success in driving innovation, and for creating new jobs. GS Engineering was one of only 18 companies recognized this year, and the only company in the Midwest to receive such recognition. The Tibbett Award, given by SBA, honor outstanding small businesses and individuals who participate in the SBA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.

GS Engineering received the Tibbett Award for its work on the Advanced Lightweight Vehicle Components and Materials SBIR which has led to numerous Phase III production awards. These production awards have allowed for job creation in the local and regional area, in support of manufacturing components designed under the SBIR effort. Since 2001, GS Engineering has been awarded thirteen (13) Phase I SBIR contracts by USSOCOM, US Air Force, US Navy, and the US Army. Town Hall to Focus on Attracting Finnish Businesses to the Keweenaw HANCOCK, MI – A “Town Hall” discussion and reception will take place Thursday, June 20, 2013, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., in the Chapel Auditorium of the Finlandia University Jutila Center for Global Design and Business, Hancock.

Pine Mountain Music Festival Keweenaw Kickoff Gala Pine Mountain Music Festival announces the opening event of its 23rd Season, the Keweenaw Kickoff Gala on June 13. This opening event is a festive occasion to meet our 2013 Resident Opera Artists in a more intimate and personal setting. Our Resident Opera Artists -- from Washington, D.C., Missouri, Texas, Virginia, and Michigan – come together in the Upper Peninsula for the first time.

While savoring wine, hors d’oeuvres and dessert, guests will enjoy highlights from opera and American musical theatre repertoire.

Joshua Major, PMMF Artistic Director, and Lucy Thrasher, ROA Program Director will host the evening event. Susan Byykkonen, accomplished teacher and pianist from Calumet, MI, will accompany. The four ROAs are Julie Tabash, soprano, who was with us in 2012 as Despina in Così fan tutte and Anne in A Little Night Music; Cristina Bakhoum, mezzo-soprano, who is a graduate of New England Conservatory of Music; Kyle Tomlin, tenor, who appeared in Rockland in 2011 and in A Little Night Music in 2012; and Andrew McLaughlin, baritone, an University of Maryland graduate from the Washington, CD, area. Joining them is local singer Lara Neves, who has appeared in numerous Pine Mountain Music Festival productions.

Pine Mountain Music Festival Presents Series Of Events During FinnFest Pine Mountain Music Festival presents four events in the Keweenaw during FinnFest: Finnharmonic Symphony, Bergonzi String Quartet, and screenings of the documentary Yoopera! and the opera Rockland.

This year PMMF has a unique opportunity to support FinnFest 2013 with the Finnharmonic Symphony concert featuring PMMF professional musicians and members of the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra (KSO), under the direction of Joel Neves. Special music for this concert will include Jukka Linkola’s Bass Concerto with Evan Premo as soloist, Sibelius’ Luonnotar with soloist by Mary Bonhag, and Finnish brass music performed by Ameriikan Poijat. Performances will be June 20, 8 PM, at the Calumet Theatre and June 23, 2 PM, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $22 for adults and $10 for students/children. Maestro Neves will give a pre-concert talk one hour before each performance.

The Festival revisits the triumph of Rockland through two exciting cinematic screenings. Commissioned by

PMMF and composed by Jukka Linkola, Rockland chronicles forgotten U.P. mining history based on an eye-witness account. Rockland will be shown in its entirety in conjunction with the first public screening of Suzanne Jurva’s documentary, Yoopera!, which details the creation of Rockland and the Story Line project, Mary Wright’s community art piece which illustrates personal local ancestral histories. Yoopera! will be shown at 1 PM and Rockland will be shown at 3 PM at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free, but a ticket is required.

A perennial favorite with Pine Mountain Music Festival audiences since 1995, the Bergonzi String Quartet, bring their charm, humor, and great music-making to the stage on June 22, 7:30 PM, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts, Houghton. Tickets are $30, $10 for students/children.

The Bergonzi String Quartet will also perform a free children’s concert at 12 PM, June 22, at the Portage Lake District Library, Houghton. The Legend of the Loon, a book written by Kathy-jo Wargin and illustrated by Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen, is featured in the concert.The Quartet performs Pamela McConnell’s (BSQ Violist) special musical arrangement of a Sibelius composition, which will accompany Trudy Olsson’s narration of this legend.

Using Scandinavian symbolism, Wargin tells the story of the magnificent loon and how grandmothers of a thousand years live in us and we live in them.

Main Street Calumet Storefronts Glimpse Into The Past The labor strikes of 1913-1914 put Calumet in the national news and the resultant tragedy at the Italian Hall is remembered to this day. To promote the Centennial of this remarkable era, Main Street Calumet is hosting “Red Jacket 1913, Windows into the Past,” window displays of art and antiques pertaining to the 1913 era.

Additionally, the Keweenaw National Historic Park has partnered with CLK schools to create individual building history posters for each building in the historic district.

Poster information includes the year of construction, original use of the building and early photographs.

The show will run thoughout the summer months through Heritage Days, August 31st, 2013.

Tip #459 - 8 Ways To Beat Burnout

by Bob and Susan Negan of WhizBang! Training Dear Tip of the Weeker, Burnout. It’s a bummer. And we all experience it occasionally.

Burnout can come at different times in your work life. For some, burnout rears its ugly head soon after you’ve started that new business or taken that new job. The situation is overwhelming and the work load never-ending.

For others, it arrives after many, many, MANY years of doing the same thing over, and over, and OVER. Try some, or all, of these 8 ways to beat burnout...

Manage your work more effectively.

One of the biggest factors contributing to burnout is the feeling that there is so much to do and not enough time to get it all done. Sometimes the problem is how effectively you’re managing time.

Figure out what’s important.

Make a list of everything you have to do. Now figure out which things are REALLY important. Be ruthless. Cross everything else off the list.

Develop an interest outside of work.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Even to himself. Go ahead and join the choir, take a knitting class, build a boat from scratch, learn Italian, start a book club, renovate 20

Delegate more often.

Decide which tasks you no longer enjoy or just don’t have time for and delegate them. Let go, be free! If you don’t have a staff, hire out some work.

Get a bookkeeper, hire a cleaning service, or find someone to do your window displays. The work may not be done precisely the way you would have done it, but it will be done!

Ask for help.

Confer with a colleague. Talk to an expert. Trying to re-invent everything about your business can be exhausting. You can be sure that if you are doing it, it has been done before. Let someone else show you the easy way to get it done.

Try something new.

Have you been doing the same things the same way for too long? Done the same Easter promotion for the past twelve years? Played the same sales games with your staff for months on end? Shake it up. Try new things. Or do the same old things in an entirely new way. Be a little crazy.

It’s incredibly helpful to get away from the hurry scurry day-to-day of your business and get in a room with TONS retailers just like you. It’s a sure fire way to banish burnout.

Get out.

If nothing else seems to help, try something really, really new. Like a new job or a new industry. Sell your business and move on! Remember, it’s your life and your happiness that’s most important. Work to live, don’t live to work.

Fundraiser For CCCAC Hancock- The Copper Country Community Arts Center has received many gifts of art over the years and is now able to make some of the donated work available for sale in a fundrasier. On Thursday, June 27 the CCCAC will host an event to sell these works in a silent auction. The event will be held in the ballroom with refreshments and live music.
