Issue #53 December 2016

In the November session for the Leadership Keweenaw Program we were gifted with the information as to the operations of several of the areas service based industries. We also spent a great deal of time learning and discussing diversity and how it effects us not only in our day to day lives but how it effects our subliminal thoughts, actions, and opinions. The group learned how the health of the inhabitants of the area is recorded and were given lots of statistics portraying various health problems that afflict the people in our community. We heard from the local food pantry about the various services they offer as well as some of the challenges that they face. Also on the agenda was a visit from the DHHS to go over their services that are offered to the community. We finished off the day by taking a drive over to the Houghton Fire House and learning about what goes on over at the volunteer fire department as well as the areas largest EMS provider. Our final speaker informed us about the operations and challenges of the local shelter for domestic abuse.
