Keweenaw Spark Plug Awards Dinner!

The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) along with the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance (KEDA), MTEC SmartZone and Keweenaw Young Professionals (KYP), are hosting the third annual Keweenaw Spark Plug Awards Dinner, a local business awards ceremony, on Thursday, February 12, 2015 in Houghton.

The community has the opportunity to recognize local businesses and individuals for their outstanding efforts in the 2014 calendar year.

The celebration will take place at Michigan Technological University in the Memorial Union Ballroom, with Spark Plug awards handed out in six categories (see page11 for list) . Spark Plug award recipients must be KEDA or Chamber members, exceptions are made for the Person/Project of the Year and Young Professional of the Year. Winners will be chosen by the Spark Plug Award Committee, made up of board members from KEDA, MTEC SmartZone, KYP and the Chamber.

Community members can submit all nominations by visiting the Chamber website at www.keweenaw.org from January 1st to January 31st, 2015.

The Keweenaw Spark Plug Award categories are: Spark Plug Award for Growth – Company that has seen significant growth in employment and/or sales during the previous year.

Spark Plug Award for Quality / Customer Service / Teamwork – Recognized by the community, other businesses, and customers for providing top quality products/services.

Spark Plug Award for Innovation / Transformation – New or existing company pursuing new products or services that hold great promise for local economic growth and employment. Or, that has made a significant change in how they conduct business or in the products/services they offer, which has produced significant outcomes in terms of revenue or employment.

Award for Community Development – A company, person, or activity that has had significant positive impact on the business community.

Person / Project of the Year – A high impact person or project that is notable within the community and will provide lasting benefits to businesses and community members.

Young Professional of the Year –A person under the age of 40 who made significant strides in our community and in their profession in 2014.

The dinner is open to the community. Tickets are $45 per person if reserved by January 31st, 2015 price will go up to $75 per person after that date. Reservations can be made by visiting the Chamber website or contacting the Chamber office at (906) 482-5240.

Purpose:

History of Thirsty Thursday: In June 2011, the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce organized the first Thirsty Thursday event, a quarterly gathering of representatives of the Baraga, Ontonagon, and Houghton/Keweenaw Counties Chambers of Commerce. Over time, the invitations were extended out to Iron and Gogebic Counties Chambers of Commerce. The concept was to share ideas, strategies and news among the various groups. We viewed the event as an opportunity to connect with each other, share best practices and gain understanding of what was happening around the Western UP. In the spirit of cooperation, it was recognized that as the Western UP grows and prospers, we all gain. The events are open to anyone, Chamber affiliated or not, who has an interest in promoting the Western UP. The meetings had originally been held in Baraga County, but it is a group consensus as to where we gather.

The project, set to begin in January 2015, will require numerous closures of the lift bridge. While trying to minimize traffic impacts by scheduling closures at night, these closures may impact public transit, school athletic schedules or other activities. We do not have an exact schedule of closures at this time, but we will release it as soon as it is available.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has sent the Chamber a PDF document to provide some initial information about the upcoming Portage Lake Lift Bridge rehabilitation project. Houghton County is one of 50 official semifinalist communities in the Georgetown University Energy Prize! We have already won a $30,000 grant from the Joyce Foundation that will enable us to hire a community energy manager/coordinator for implementation our Community Energy Plan.

Big thanks again to Abhi, Brad, Brent, and Edward who wrote and submitted the energy plan and our application for Joyce Foundation funding! Also big thanks to Semco, UPPCO, and OCREA for agreeing to collaborate with us on this effort and to submit quarterly reports on energy usage for Houghton County residents and municipalities. And thanks to EVERYONE who has contributed in so many different ways to make this happen! There have literally been hundreds of Houghton County residents involved in this effort in some way or another.

Mileage Rates Changing January 1st, the IRS increased the standard mileage rate from $0.56 to $0.57.5 cents per mile. The new mileage rate for moving expenses will be $0.23 cents per mile.

EMPLOYERS WITH 5 OR FEWER EMPLOYEES NOW REQUIRED TO FILE UIA QUARTERLY REPORTS ONLINE Beginning with the first quarter 2015, a;; employers with 5 or fewer employees are required to file their quarterly wage and tax reports with the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) electronically. First quarter reports are due April 25, 2015. After that date, the paper form UIA 1025, Employer’s Quarterly Tax/Payroll report will no longer be accepted by the UIA. This requirement came with the amendments that were made to the Michigan Employment Security Act in 2011 (P.A. 269), but is also a huge step toward the fulfilling an Agency goal of creating more efficiencies for both employers and claimants including paperwork reduction and more timely and convenient interaction with UIA for account management.

If an employer sends in a quarterly report in paper form after April 25, 2015, that employer will receive a notice from the UIA indicating that the paper form 1028 will not be processes and will not be returned. Financial penalties begin to accrue 15 days after the mail date of the notice. However, if a payment was received with the tax report, it will be deposited and the employers report will be credited.

Filing reports online is simple and convenient and can only be done through the UIA’s Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM). MiWAM also offers many other convenient and helpful features for managing your UIA account such as scheduling or making payments, responding to fact finding inquiries, filing UIA tax protests, viewing notices and letters from the Agency and more.

If you haven’t already registered for a MiWAM account, do it today at Michigan.gov/uia. Click on “Michigan Web Account Manager for Claimants and Employers.” Be sure to download or view the MiWAM Toolkit for Employers, which provides you with everything you need to know about how to use MiWAM, including helpful step-by-step instructions.

UPCOMING EVENT AT THE CALUMET THEATRE “Tosca” one of the world’s most popular operas, will be shown in Blue Ray DVD at the Calumet Theatre on Saturday afternoon, January 17 at 1:00 pm. Copper Country opera lovers are invited to a matinee performance.

The melodramatic plot, which Puccini borrowed from a play by Sardou (written for Sarah Bernhardt who performed it thousands of times), is set in Rome in 1800 and includes political intrigue, jealousy, betrayal, religion, romance, deceit, attempted rape, torture, murder, heartbreak, suicide and more.

In this 2010 production “Tosca” provides the audience with many of Puccini’s most famous arias, which are masterfully performed in this video by soprano Daniela Dessi in the title role of the celebrated singer Tosca, tenor Fabio Armiliato as the painter Mario Cavarodossi, and baritone Claudio Sgura as chief of police Baron Scarpia. There will be English subtitles.

Opera has been broadcast on the radio on Saturday afternoons for more than 75 years. Inspired by these radio broadcasts, no longer available on our local NPR station, the Calumet Theatre is offering opera performance on DVD. “Tosca,” is chosen to “test the waters,” to see if there is interest in offering a Saturday matinee opera once a month on an expanded schedule.

The program will be approximately 2 hours long, with intermissions. A donation of $15 per person is encouraged and complimentary refreshments of sweets, savories, and a variety of beverages will be available during intermission.

The mission of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce: SUPPORT BUSINESS: The Chamber supports businesses by providing information and referring inquiries to our local and regional economic development partners such as the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, Michigan Small Business Development Center, MTEC SmartZone, Entrepreneur Support Center, or Jutila Business Incubator.

ATTRACT BUSINESS: The Chamber provides information and referrals to people who want to visit or relocate here. If someone inquires about tourism, we coordinate with the Keweenaw Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. When someone is relocating a business or family here, we connect them to the appropriate community resources that meet their needs.

DEVELOP : The Chamber will continue to grow networking and visibility opportunities for small businesses. We will provide opportunities for ribbon cuttings, Eggs and Issues, and After Hours networking events, promotion and advertising opportunities, golf outings, annual membership directory, business referrals, and a monthly newsletter.
