SAVE THE DATE: Wednesday, October 7 and Thursday, October 8, 2015 Houghton/Hancock! Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference! This is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with many organizations, communities, businesses and those interested in an entrepreneurial communities success and growth. We have opportunities for businesses to be involved by being a host venue site for a breakout session at your shop, store, café, office etc. Sessions have between 8 and 15 participants who will utilize what space is available – it’s meant to be cozy. Sessions last between 45 and 60 minutes, only space and electricity is needed. The Breakout Session tracks are: • • • •

Growing Entrepreneurs: Tools & Resources for Communities & Entrepreneurs, Building Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs – Youth as Entrepreneurs Michigan, Our Green and Blue Economy Arts, Ag and Culture

We recently closed the RFP for speakers for the four breakout session tracks. MSU-Extension mentioned they received a great response from the area. The conference will have approximately 150 people in attendance. The Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference will engage, learn and share tools for local community & economic development through support for entrepreneurship. The MSU-Extension has opportunities for sponsorship to help support the CEC conference as well. We have more information on our website at www.keweenaw.org please forward to other communities that should be in attendance.

We will be sharing more about the new Leadership Program at the June 18th, Chamber Eggs & Issues Breakfast at the Shelden Grill. Learn how companies may send a key employee(s) and individuals to participate in this great new program which will create new, engaged leaders in our community! Past leadership program participants from other areas are welcome to be part of our steering committee, please contact the Chamber office.

The Regional Chamber Alliance with other Western U.P. Chambers of Commerce are meeting for further collaboration in all six counties (Houghton/Keweenaw, Baraga, Ontonagon, Gogebic and Iron). We are working together to further advance the business community as a region. The Lake Gogebic Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Thirsty Thursday at the Gogebic Lodge on Thursday, June 11th. They will be doing complimentary pontoon boat tours of Lake Gogebic starting at 4:30 pm (EDT) for those who RSVP for the rides (weather permitting). Also, RSVP if you plan to attend the Thirsty Thursday starting at 5:30 pm Social Time and 6:00 Dinner & Meeting – (dinner is not provided – but a buffet will be available and cash bar).

Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Michigan State University Extension has been involved in helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses for many years. The CEC program was created in Michigan approximately 8 years ago and was launched in an effort to educate communities on the various tools and resources available to help them help entrepreneurs grow in their communities.

This state-wide conference moves around each year. Always held in October, the 2015 conference will be going border to border in Houghton/Hancock on Oct. 7-8 and Sturgis on Oct. 21-22, Michigan. Previous conferences have been held in Lansing, Petoskey, Marshall and East Tawas.

The target audience is representatives from various community organizations (business, education, government, chamber, service, economic developers, etc.) that all have an interest in learning how to make their community more conducive to entrepreneurial growth.

As planning has been underway, we are in need of several things!

Venues – Host a break-out session. You don’t need any more room then you already have. Sessions have between 8 and 15 participants who will come into your business for 45 to 60 minutes. If you are interested in being a host venue, please email info@keweenaw.org. Find out how ACA affects Employers with fewer than 50 Employees Most employers have fewer than 50 full-time employees or full-time equivalent employees and are therefore not subject to the Affordable Care Act’s employer shared responsibility provision.

If an employer has fewer than 50 full-time employees, including full-time equivalent employees, on average during the prior year, the employer is not an ALE for the current calendar year. Therefore, the employer is not subject to the employer shared responsibility provisions or the employer information reporting provisions for the current year. Employers with 50 or fewer employees can purchase health insurance coverage for its employees through the Small Business Health Options Program – better known as the SHOP Marketplace.

Calculating the number of employees is especially important for employers that have close to 50 employees or whose workforce fluctuates throughout the year. To determine its workforce size for a year an employer adds its total number of full-time employees for each month of the prior calendar year to the total number of full-time equivalent employees for each calendar month of the prior calendar year, and divides that total number by 12.

Employers that have fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees with average annual wages of less than $50,000 may be eligible for the small business health care tax credit if they cover at least 50 percent of their full-time employees’ premium costs and generally, after 2013, if they purchase coverage through the SHOP. All employers, regardless of size, that provide self-insured health coverage must file an annual information return reporting certain information for individuals they cover. The first returns are due to be filed in 2016 for coverage provided during 2015.

There will be community surveys for public responses, be sure to complete the survey being sent with summer assessments. When you receive the public survey be sure to complete it and send it back to express interest in services so, providers may make business decisions in the area to better serve the area and fill the service gaps. The Certified Connected Communities celebration ceremony for Houghton County will be held on Friday, June 19th from 3:00-4:00 pm. at the Portage Lake District Library.

We have been busy strengthening the core programs of the Chamber of Commerce and have some great new committees in place. I would like to encourage all of our Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce members to reach out to other businesses to join and support the areas business community. We welcome Chamber members to be actively engaged in recently identified volunteer opportunities. We would love to engage some retired business people in the community as well. The more involvement and engagement, the more exciting opportunities “Your Chamber” can provide. MICHIGAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE APPLAUDS HOUSE PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION TO PREEMPT LOCAL EMPLOYMENT LAW ORDINANCES LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Chamber of Commerce today issued the following statement by Michigan Chamber President & CEO Rich Studley regarding legislation passed by the Michigan House (House Bill 4052) yesterday to prevent regulatory overreach by prohibiting local government from enacting certain types of employment law ordinances.

“House Bill 4052 will preempt local employment law ordinances that overlap, duplicate or conflict with state and federal labor laws. Local control is not a grant of unlimited authority to cities and townships to over regulate businesses involved in intrastate commerce.”

“The legislation reaffirms the authority of state government to govern private sector employers’ relations with their employees.”

“The Michigan Chamber worked with the bill sponsor and others on an amendment to clarify that the bill does not override local ordinances prohibiting employment discrimination in the workplace, as this was never the intent of the bill.”

“The Michigan Chamber’s support for HB 4052 is not about whether employers should offer a fair wage, leave time or any other particular benefit. Rather, for us, this bill is about who should make these decisions.

We support HB 4052 because Michigan’s 1,800-plus local units of government should not hold unlimited power to enact inflexible, burdensome and job-killing employment regulations. The Portage Health Foundation, a non-profit charitable foundation serving Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties is pleased to announce it is now accepting grant requests to address Community Health, Wellness and Prevention services. The Portage Health Foundation is seeking targeted projects from throughout the four-county community that focus on outdoor recreation for youth and families.

The grant funding is a result of the recently held Portage Health Foundation Spring Gala where the net proceeds of the grant were matched by the foundation. A total amount of $60,000.00 will be granted.

“We are splitting the $60,000.00 into four equal awards of $15,000.00 each and will make that available for a project in each of the four counties served by the Portage Health Foundation,” said Kevin Store, Executive Director of the foundation. “This is an opportunity for our neighbors in outlying communities to consider new projects or expand on existing community resources,” Store added.

Grant requests of all scope and size, up to the stated allocation or applications that need partial funding up to the available amount, will be considered as part of this Request for Proposal (RFP) notification.

Grants addressing the following will be considered under this RFP: 1.

Initiatives that promote and/or demonstrate new or expanded resources or programs that promote healthy physical activity of youth and families; outdoor recreation; and community collaboration.

Students from the computer science department at Michigan Tech will provide free computer help for adults throughout the summer at the Portage Lake District Library.

Computer help sessions with individual tutors will be held from 9 - 10 a.m. every Saturday now through August.

“Online at the Library: Computer Help for Adults” will show participants how to use the internet to keep in touch with people, share pictures and letters, find information, solve computer problems and much more.

Tutors will help each participant with their own particular needs. People may attend as many of the sessions as they wish, and those who have laptops may bring them.

Visibility Opportunities

The mission of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce: SUPPORT BUSINESS: The Chamber supports businesses by providing information and referring inquiries to our local and regional economic development partners such as the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, Michigan Small Business Development Center, MTEC SmartZone, Entrepreneur Support Center, or Jutila Business Incubator.

ATTRACT BUSINESS: The Chamber provides information and referrals to people who want to visit or relocate here. If someone inquires about tourism, we coordinate with the Keweenaw Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. When someone is relocating a business or family here, we connect them to the appropriate community resources that meet their needs.

DEVELOP BUSINESS : The Chamber will continue to grow networking and visibility opportunities for small businesses. We will provide opportunities for ribbon cuttings, Eggs and Issues, and After Hours networking events, promotion and advertising opportunities, golf outings, annual membership directory, business referrals, and a monthly newsletter.
