The Portage Lake Enrichment Foundation, the 501(c)3 of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, will be growing future leaders in the new Leadership Keweenaw program which began with the August 2016 (2 day retreat) and continues with one full-day session each month until May 2017. This program is designed for employers to send a rising star in their company through the annual program. The participants will grow their leadership skills to take on leadership roles at work and will help grow our areas community leaders.

Each month, one of the participants from this years’ program will write a short article from their “Insight” into the new Leadership Keweenaw program.

So far, “Wow! Eye Opening! And, can’t wait until next month!”

I can’t wait for businesses and area communities to be the benefactors of our first inaugural class and those that will follow. Our future business and community leaders will be ready for the challenge! o o

CHAMBER WEBSITE: Our website offers members exposure to those visiting the Keweenaw and those living in and outside the area. In July, we had 71,654 hits to our Chamber website of which 34,373 were member page hits, an average of 70,000 page visits to our events calendar, Job Postings views were 1,417, and over 1,000 hits to the Hot Deals page (coupons). Since our website went live December 1, 2015 we have had 5,363 visitors request additional information from Chamber members; 811 requested additional information be emailed to them and the remainder requested information via a return call or by mail. Wouldn’t you like to have some of these referrals and exposure?

Be sure to visit the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce website at www.Keweenaw.org and make sure you have the most current and up-to-date information available. What’s exciting about the new website, is our members are able to access and update their own information once you get set-up. You can post your own Job Postings and Hot Deals/Coupons too. Raising Capital Seminar - September 22nd

RETREAT DAY 1

We introduced ourselves to the group and met the session leaders: Robbyn Lucier, Kathy Flagstadt, and Cheryl Fahrner. After a quick ice breaker game, the participants got to know each other a little better.

Around 10am, we all headed over to the Carnegie Museum for a presentation on Historical Leaders of the Keweenaw. Jo Holt, Historian for the Keweenaw National Historical Park, discussed Alexander Agassiz, “Big Annie” Clemenc, and other leaders from the 19th century that helped paved the way for the future. We all learned many new and interesting things about this area. For example, Agassiz was responsible for making the Copper Country use the Eastern Time Zone. He wanted to be on the same time as Wall Street so he could keep an eye on the trading and selling price of Copper. He was a powerful guy! After the presentation, the group toured the rest of the museum then returned to the Beach Club for lunch.

Our afternoon activity was the most insightful. We all took the medicine wheel personality test and found out which style we were: North, South, East or West. The test is actually based off of the Native American wheel of spiritual concepts, but has been tailored to modern concepts. After each personality type gathered into the same group, we were given a simple (for some of us, complex) task: plan a party.

Each group had different ways of getting the task done. Some of us were very detail oriented, some of us didn’t write anything down, and others took complete charge of the situation. We learned that everyone has a different way of working, and that we all have strengths and weaknesses when working with a team.

We learned what we can do better as a team member, and how to work with other styles. The exercise had opened my eyes to the variety of leadership styles that I deal with every day. Even as I write this article, I see my some of my own style differences emerge (detail oriented, accurate, logical, consistent etc.).

For me, the opening retreat has already been worth it. I’m excited to meet up with the group again for next month’s session!

AWARENESS ON BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL LEADER – RETREAT DAY 2

by Amanda McConnon A rainy Friday kicked off Day 2 of the Leadership Keweenaw program. The day began with our group practicing networking in action. It can be challenging to know how many people to try and connect with at networking events or what you should share about yourself in a 30 second intro. With a little direction we were covering several connection areas and had an introduction to practice and put into action.

We also reviewed social media and our personal branding, because although it is a great tool to stay connected with others, we need to be conscious of what we are sharing about ourselves online. If you Google search your name, would you find any surprises? It is important to not only be found online, but that the right or “digitally distinct” information is showing up for you.

We then ventured into defining our leadership styles; either direct, collaborative or facilitative and reviewed leadership traits, characteristics and responsibilities. Not that any type is better than the other, just discovering what we default to as a leadership style.

The day concluded with several team building, problem solving activities with MTU’s Outdoor Adventure Program. With our group now more comfortable with one another, we together solved several challenges ranging from relocating marbles without touching them to navigating a “mine field” blindfolded. Today left me amazed at what an important tool clear communication really is and being able to communicate the goals of your group or company, is the first step to becoming a successful leader.

27th Annual Parade of Nations "Passport to the World" Saturday, September 17, 2016, at 11 a.m.

The Parade of Nations strives to promote worldwide culture and national awareness in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula through a community-wide annual event that includes a parade and a multicultural festival.

In keeping with the 2016 theme, this year’s celebration promises to be truly legendary. Expect flags, floats, food, and family entertainment presented with international flair. Adding to the excitement this year is our headline act, Breaksk8, an American professional roller skating dance crew. The skaters will roll through the parade, and will perform an exciting show at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on the Michigan Tech campus later Saturday evening. Tickets to the Parade of Nations' Breask8 event can be purchased online after September 1st.

Gearing up to Saturday's festivities, the Keweenaw Roller Derby Girls will host a FREE open roller skate/blade event on Wednesday, September 14th from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., at the Houghton County Arena. The event is BYO-skates, and is open to all ages and abilities. For more information, visit the Facebook event page.

The parade begins at 11 a.m., making its way through Hancock across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Houghton. There’s a float contest featuring $500 in cash prizes. Everyone is invited to march with their country. Show your Parade of Nations spirit with a sign and be entered in the "I Love Parade of Nations" Chicago Weekend Family Getaway drawing, a prize package that includes airfare, hotel, and entertainment.

The gala procession winds up at Dee Stadium, an historic waterfront venue transformed into a global marketplace featuring dozens of food and craft booths and performers from around the world. No-cost children’s activities and meals averaging in the $5–8 price range make this an affordable-yet-exotic family experience.

CANDIDATE FORUM The League of Women Voters of the Copper Country & the Chamber are co-hosting a candidate forum. The Forum will be on Thursday, September 29th at Lakeview Manor Community Room (1401 Quincy Street, Hancock) from 6 pm - 8 pm. Those invited candidates to be included in the forum: 110 State Rep race, Sheriff Race, Prosecutor Race, and contested County Commissioners.
