“NOT JUST EXCITING ENTERTAINMENT, BUT AN EXPERIENCE THAT RECOGNIZES LIVE THEATRE AS A VIBRANT SHARED ENCOUNTER.” — WALL STREET JOURNAL We acknowledge and honour the land upon which we gather as the historic and traditional territory of First Nations peoples. In particular we recognize and thank the Neutral Nation, the Mississauga and the Haudenosaunee for their stewardship of these lands over millennia. I HAVE HAD A GREAT TIME PUTTING TOGETHER A CLASSIC SHAW FESTIVAL SEASON FOR 2019. I could afford to be bold in my choices because of the incredible Ensemble here: I have worked all over the world, but I have never been blessed with such a strong group of actors. They can dance; they can sing; they are great comedians; they can break your heart. Most of all, they are masters of language. And they need to be. Just look at the plays we have coming up: Man and Superman, Cyrano de Bergerac and The Glass Menagerie are among the great masterpieces of world theatre; while Patrick Hamilton’s murder thriller Rope and Shaw’s razor-sharp comedy Getting Married will showcase the expertise of an Ensemble steeped . in the Shaw period. Bring everyone you know to Brigadoon, the all-time classic musical that has it all: tears and laughter, ravishing tunes and stunning dancing. Or to The Ladykillers, a heist-gone-wrong comedy. And educators, let students experience the magic of theatre and bring them to see the next in our Narnia series, The Horse and His Boy. Finally, while it may seem a long way off, don’t miss your chance to book your group in to see Holiday Inn and A Christmas Carol. What a wonderful way to start the holiday season. See you soon!

Stumbling upon a magical village that appears out of the Scottish mist for one day every century, Tommy, a modern boy, meets Fiona, a girl from the past. Should he stay with her in Brigadoon, or return to the world he knows and never see her again? This feast of song and dance from Lerner and Loewe (the team behind My Fair Lady) has been entrancing audiences for more than seven decades. Classic songs like “Almost like being in love” and “I’ll go home with Bonnie Jean” will stay with you forever. Grade 4+

FESTIVAL THEATRE

THE LADYKILLERS

NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE

By Graham Linehan From the motion picture screenplay by William Rose By special arrangement with Studiocanal In association with Fiery Angel, London Directed by Tim Carroll DARK COMEDY. Is it really so hard to kill one little old lady? Based on one of the best-loved British films of all time, this comedy tour-de-force is set in post-World War II London where five oddball crooks pose as an amateur string quintet in order to rent a room from a little old lady. It is supposed to be the nerve centre for their greatest ever heist, but things soon get complicated. Even then, these hardened criminals only need to commit one easy murder to get clean away with the loot. But are they up to it? This deliciously macabre comedy makes its North American premiere. MAN AND SUPERMAN WITH DON JUAN IN HELL By Bernard Shaw Directed by Kimberley Rampersad

SPECIAL THEATRICAL EVENT

SHAW CLASSIC. John Tanner doesn’t want to get married, least of all to Ann Whitefield. No one can force him. So why is he so scared? Bernard Shaw’s joyous, life-affirming comedy is widely considered his masterpiece. It is often done without its dazzling third act, Don Juan in Hell, but not this time: come for a full day of thrilling theatre, with a luncheon interlude featuring farm-to-table dishes from Niagara’s finest chefs, paired with our best regional wines. There will be only 17 performances of this once-in-a-lifetime theatrical event, so book early. Grade 9+

ROPE By Patrick Hamilton Directed by Jani Lauzon PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER. Murder comes home to the Royal George. Two college students in 1920s London commit murder and host a party for the victim’s friends with his hidden body as the centerpiece … just to see if they can pull it off. Masterfully written, this gripping psychological thriller — directed for the silver screen by Alfred Hitchcock — will have you on the edge of your seat. Can they hold their nerve? Can you? Grade 9+

ROYAL GEORGE THEATRE

GETTING MARRIED By Bernard Shaw Directed by Tanja Jacobs SHAW COMEDY. Edith and Cecil were supposed to tie the knot. But a pamphlet has arrived warning them of the dangers of getting married. So now they’ve called it off, sending their entire family into a frenzied, fireworks-filled debate about marriage, society’s best-loved institution: is it, in fact, anything more than a con? This timeless comedy shows Bernard Shaw at his best, willing to ask the questions that, even now, we would rather ignore — while still making us laugh our socks off. Grade 9+

Well, it’s a Russian play, so, everything. Written by award-winning Canadian playwright Hannah Moscovitch, this edgy, wildly original homage to the plays of the great Russian playwrights will first make you laugh, and then take your breath away. ROYAL GEORGE THEATRE

CYRANO DE BERGERAC By Edmond Rostand Translated and adapted for the stage by Kate Hennig Directed by Chris Abraham SWASHBUCKLING ROMANCE. Cyrano de Bergerac is a 17th century swordsman who can do anything … except tell Roxane, the woman he loves, how he feels. He’s just too self-conscious about his unusually large nose. Roxane is in love with words, so when Cyrano is offered the chance to ghostwrite love letters to her from an inarticulate, love-struck cadet, he takes it — but can he ever reveal himself? A breathtaking tale about the exquisite torture of loving from afar, for anyone who has ever stood beneath a window. Grade 9+ Production Sponsor

JACKIE MAXWELL STUDIO THEATRE

May 22 – October 12

THE GLASS MENAGERIE By Tennessee Williams Directed by László Bérczes AMERICAN CLASSIC. In his autobiographical masterpiece, Tennessee Williams recalls growing up in the Depression-era Midwest with his shy sister and their overbearing mother. A gentleman caller seems to offer the chance of a new life — perhaps for all of them. But can we ever truly escape the life we have been given? And what would it cost? This quiet hurricane of desire and longing is widely considered one of the greatest American plays of all time. Grade 9+ Production Sponsor

SEX By Mae West Directed by Peter Hinton COMEDY DRAMA. Mae West created for herself the role of Margy LaMont, a quick-witted, sharp-tongued prostitute in Roaring Twenties Montreal who is looking for a better life. When she meets a rich and ardent young lover, she seems to have hit the jackpot. The trouble is, he doesn’t know the truth about her. Can she keep her secret? Should she? Funny and frank, this comedy drama got its author locked up for “corrupting the morals of youth.” Grade 9+

JACKIE MAXWELL STUDIO THEATRE

July 14 – October 12

VICTORY By Howard Barker Directed by Tim Carroll POWERFUL DRAMA. Brutal and brilliant, this controversial play by Howard Barker is set in the aftermath of Charles II’s Restoration on the throne of England. The central character is Mrs Bradshaw, a 17th century widow fighting to give her puritan husband a proper burial — but to achieve this, she must take on a world where base instincts are rampant and language is wielded as a weapon. How much of her own human dignity is she willing to risk? Powerful and challenging, this play may enrage you, but it won’t leave you. Grade 12+ Warning: Victory is deliberately offensive. It is not for the squeamish and contains very strong language.
