I am sitting here on the edge of the Green Swamp in Central Florida, an amazing physiographic feature that encompasses 560,000 acres of wetlands, the source of four major rivers, as well as the aquifer for most of Florida. What is amazing to me is the diversity of the area. Pine trees are interspersed with palms, cypress trees stretch their roots into the swamp, and live oak with Spanish moss creates that sense of Southern gentility and a slower pace. I’ve spent the past 11 days camped on the edge of the Green Swamp. I have another 7 days to go and I am just starting to settle into the natural rhythm of a day of life in the swamp. The sand hill cranes wake me in the morning with their cackle/chuckle followed by the cicadas as they start their serenade with the sunrise. Later in the day the hawks, vultures, Ibis, cattle egrets and bald eagles ride the lazy thermals above the warming swamp. Turtles and gators wander about and the butterflies and dragonflies show up in the late evening rounding out the day. This morning I was treated to the yipping of a pack of coyotes. This Florida pack has a different yip than I am used to from the coyotes of the Central Oregon high desert, another good reminder that getting out of the routine and setting out on some exploration is always rewarding. There is always something to learn. I think that is what I love about product development here at Ruffwear as we push the boundaries and explore, new experiences are presented, and there is always something to learn. And with that experience, a new approach to solving challenges emerges. Since 1994, Ruffwear has been dedicated to building gear for outdoor athletes and their human companions. We believe that our products should perform and that performance should be measured by the ability to enhance our outdoor adventures with our dogs. With these guiding principles, we have three new products to share with you this season. First, we have a new offering of an old favorite, the Climate Changer™. In addition to three new color offerings of our popular fleece jacket, we have built in pattern refinements improving performance. The sleeves have been reworked allowing for an improved overall fit and range of motion for dogs during any activity.

Our new Fernie™ is a sweater knit fleece coat, inspired by human coats. The Fernie has a tailored, refined cut that stretches and moves with dogs. It looks and wears amazingly well. The tight knit retains warmth while remaining breathable making this a great coat for a full range of activities. I love this coat as a base layer used alone or layered under a shell when conditions warrant. These coats continue to incorporate our ethos of form following function. Our third offering this season is our redesigned Polar Trex™ winter specific dog boot. We have continued to refine our dog boots by removing weight and layers of fabrics. This reduces bulk, improving flexibility and boot retention. New materials and construction processes learned from over 17 years of dog boot development and 40,000 years of human footwear construction have resulted in our ability to create boots to meet diverse needs. Our partnership with Vibram® affords us the resources to incorporate rubber compounds for our outsoles that meet the specific demands of winter conditions and traction on snow and ice. We build our Polar Trex in a footwear production facility that builds many of the human footwear brands you have come to trust. Our proprietary lasts ensure that our fit and performance remains consistent over the years. Exploration is at the heart of Ruffwear’s DNA, it is what drives all of us here to get out and experience our surroundings. These experiences are what fuel our soul and drive us to create the best dog gear possible. We hope you too will continue to explore and discover your surroundings. We’ve partnered with Pittards®, a respected leather supplier in the UK since 1826, to make these strong and water-resistant leather products that will age gracefully and stand the test of time. PITTARDS HISTORY Since 1826, Pittards has been manufacturing leather in the UK and technology is very much at the heart of what Pittards does today. They make leather that is water resistant, sweat resistant, flame retardant and with enhanced grip characteristics to major brands around the world. Pittards’ expertise is bringing these performance characteristics to leather without affecting its natural beauty and handle. Their bovine hides are sourced from the UK and Europe and are a by-product of the meat industry. Pittards is ISO 14001 certified.

WATER-RESISTANT LEATHER The leather used in Ruffwear’s Frisco™ Collar and Frisco™ Leash is Pittards’ WR100X water resistant leather. This technology was developed over 30 years ago, initially as a way of protecting golf gloves from the damaging effects of sweat, which de-tans leather and makes it stiffen and crack after only a few uses, especially in warm climates. In the early 1990s, Pittards developed the technology for the sports and performance footwear and leather goods markets. Part of the development process was the outfitting of expeditions to the Himalayas (for the demanding walkin, to climbs, which required extended comfort as well as water resistance) and a global yacht race where the constant exposure to salt water was the ultimate testing ground for the protective benefits of WR100X. The WR100X process is tanned right into the leather and forms bonds with the fibers so that it cannot easily be washed away. This is important because unlike a surface treatment that ceases to be effective if the leather gets scuffed, the WR100X is through the structure, so even if the surface is damaged it retains its performance. Ruffwear’s Frisco Collar and Leash are durable enough for everyday wear in and around water and harsh conditions. Over time, the full-grain leather will take on an adventure patina, improving with age.
Why Leather? RUFFWEAR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY & INSPIRATION Long before synthetic materials were developed, leather was the go-to, natural material. The “original outdoor gear.” Even with the advances in material technologies today, many who work in harsh environments still prefer gear crafted from leather for its durability, comfort and its tendency to improve with age. Ski patrollers are among the hardworking outdoor professionals that depend on leather gloves by manufacturers such as Hestra® and Black Diamond®. We took our inspiration from these products that blend leather with windproof, breathable technical fabrics.

In order to fully harness the water-resistance and comfort of leather, while stabilizing the potential stretching that naturally occurs over time, we incorporate only a thin layer of synthetic webbing that remains hidden between two layers of leather. The only material exposed to the elements is the leather itself, which resists odor and takes on an adventure patina, enhancing its look and feel over time.

“ I don’t have enough time to be able to write down how much I absolutely adore this toy. It has been the sturdiest rubber toy we’ve had the chance to own and love.” With the help of our friends at the Conservation Canines, we picked the five toughest toy destroyers we could find and challenged them to do their best with either our Huckama or Turnup dog toy. Asked to engage with their toy for a three-week period, their humans provided us with weekly updates, photos and videos to share their experiece. How did we fare? Well, we don’t call these things SUPER DURABLE for nothing.
