SPECIAL REPORT
BEST IN EDUCATION 2023 Recognising the education professionals and companies across Australia who have excelled and raised the bar ALL THROUGHOUT 2023, Key Media’s 30-strong Intelligence Unit diligently researched and produced a series of Special Reports, each showcasing the top-performing education professionals and companies across a number of important professional categories. All of our 172 published reports over the past 12 months have already attracted 2.4 million online pageviews, as we’ve crowned 5,044 deserving winners globally. In the process, 16,000 readers across Australia have been sent our surveys. The culmination of all that extensive reporting is our annual Best in Education digital edition. The Best in Education recognises the
2
education award winners from 2023’s Special Reports and features a combined 247 individuals and companies from the sector. This prestigious list provides a definitive annual collection of those who have delivered outstanding results, introduced new initiatives, refined existing working practices and also acted as a source of inspiration to colleagues. Winner of Most Influential Educators 2023, Brigit Keel, says, “Being recognised was an incredible honour for myself, and it was a testament to the work and energy that I have poured into both my professional and personal endeavours. “Winning this award has given me confi-
dence to continue to seek connections with educators both within Australia and globally. I am also looking to focus on the development of programs that foster student empowerment and emphasise the skills of problem-solving, collaboration and creativity.” This annual guide was curated and published by The Educator. We also thank the Positive Education Schools Association for their help with our reports. Below is the Best in Education. We hope you enjoy discovering those who we believe are shining brightest and building a better future for the education industry.
BEST IN EDUCATION 2023
HOW WE CHOOSE THE BEST Each year, our research team sends out thousands of surveys to the education industry, which it then follows up with phone interviews to find out just who the industry thinks is worthy of recognition. The shortlisted finalists are then put in front of our judging panel to help make a final decision on who to include.

LARRAKEYAH PRIMARY SCHOOL LARRAKEYAH PRIMARY SCHOOL opened in Darwin in 1963 and relocated 24 years later due to Cyclone Tracy before returning to its original site in 1985. However, its record of success has been constant and is based on three fundamental pillars: 1. vision and an improvement agenda 2. analysis of student and school data 3. leadership Providing insight on each of these, principal Fathma Mauger says, “A school improvement agenda needs to be communicated to the school community. The vision is lived and breathed, and everything is aligned with it. “Teachers need to understand data and know how to use data to inform their teaching. Data tells a story, and everyone needs to know the story and set targets for school improvement.” The recruitment of staff also plays a vital role. “Leaders drive change and motivate people within the school organisation. Targeting and supporting teachers who can be the key drivers in the school is essential, as they will help bring others on board,” says Mauger. The onboarding of new teachers is a meticulous process at Larrakeyah. There is an induction
12
program to enable staff new to the school to understand general expectations and, more specifically, curriculum and learning. “Onboarding staff also involves a planned staff professional development program that is aligned to the school’s strategic plan,” Mauger says. “This ensures that staff have the knowledge and skills that are important to the school organisation. Time for staff to work collaboratively and receive mentoring and coaching is also an important part of the onboarding process.” There is a pervasive culture around Larrakeyah of “thinking outside the box”. Students are encouraged to think differently and apply their learning outside of the walls of the classroom. This is driven by Mauger and her leadership team, who place a premium on innovation. “It ensures that we are preparing students for future jobs, many of which do not exist today. We need to be teaching students the skills that they will need in any job: communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking,” says Mauger. This also requires an innovative mindset, which enables the school and its staff to adapt as society and pedagogy evolve. Mauger says, “Teachers need to be prepared to change their teaching. Schools need to be
abreast of current trends in education.” This focus on innovation has seen Larrakeyah decorated with several awards, including: • Top 3 finalist for the 2021 International School Awards in the Pathways to Continued and University Education category • Top 3 finalist for the 2022 World’s Best School Prizes Supporting Healthy Lives category • Winner of the 2022 Australian Education Awards for Best STEM Program • Finalist for the 2023 Australian Education Awards in the Best Use of Technology category • The Educator’s 5-Star Sustainable Programs 2023 • The Educator’s 5-Star Inovative Schools 2023 Larrakeyah has approximately 500 students, and each is monitored to create a connection between formal learning and personal development. “The key to success is understanding the link between academic success and students’ physical and emotional wellbeing,” says Mauger.
