STJOBS HR SUMMIT 2013 EXPO GUIDE
Several forces are significantly changing the workforce dynamic in the Asia-Pacific region. These include changes such as declining population growth, rising people costs, large-scale skills mismatches, and a shortage of qualified employees. Business leaders need to change their talent management strategies in view of these changes, says Gary Chua, Senior Manager, People and Change, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), who will be presenting on the topic, “Keeping Ahead in the War for Talent” at this year’s TJobs HR Summit. He will share results from the PwC report, “Maintaining your Momentum – Key Human Capital Trends in Asia-Pacific.” According to the report, hiring levels in this region continue to be more than twice as high as in the West, with recruitment levels appearing to have increased
FEATURE
from last year. However, the study found that recruitment continues to be replacement-driven, with turnover levels accounting for much of the increase. “The turnover rate is getting higher as the economy has been showing signs of recovery in Asia and people are starting to move in search of better opportunities,” says Chua. The report also found that workers are even resigning early in each employment stint. The number of new hires leaving in the first year of service rose by 75% between 2011 and 2012. “This new-hire turnover could have direct and indirect costs to organisations,” says Chua. In his STJobs HR Summit presentation, he will look specifically at how HR can improve engagement and retention levels especially among Generation Y workers. “I will be looking at the habits and thought processes of Gen Y and how to manage them.” Line managers play a crucial role in talent management and HR needs to ensure that they are constantly engaged, says Chua. According to the PwC report, HR should not work as an isolated function. While it is HR’s responsibility to develop and facilitate human capital strategy, it cannot successfully do this without the active support of business line managers. “Line managers often tend to be detached from HR practices,” Chua says. “I will look at examples from successful companies where good communication ensures that line managers are more in tune with what is happening in the HR space.” PwC’s 2012 Global CEO survey revealed that 44% of CEOs in the region believe that talent-related costs have risen to higher than expected levels, says Chua. “The demand for top talent is very high in Asia. Companies in India and China are also looking at ways attract back local talent who have taken on postings overseas.” This demand for talent is expected to put pressure on wages and this in turn will have a bearing on human
capital ROI. All the more, maintaining workforce productivity will be a constant challenge for HR in the region, says Chua. During his presentation, Chua will provide an overview of the top productivity challenges facing companies today. “Each industry defines productivity through different means. I will be looking at it from a human cost angle.”

STJOBS HR SUMMIT 2013 EXPO GUIDE
In light of today’s shifting demographics, organisations that wish to stay competitive must rethink the ways they manage an increasingly diverse workforce. With irreversible generational shifts and increasing diversity in almost every workplace, it is critical for HR and management to find new ways to leverage on these developments. To help HR address these issues, Cheryl Liew-Chng will be presenting “Leveraging Upon Demographic Shifts for Improved Workplace Dynamics, Performance and Productivity”. “Over the last seven years, I have researched and worked with smart organisations to not just be prepared, but to take advantage of the opportunity to create their competitive advantage,” says Liew-Chng. According to her, there are five key shifts that are now impacting workplace demographics. These
FEATURE
include increasing numbers of women entering the workplace, non-traditional households, generations working together, the ‘ageing but active’ generation, and increasing overall diversity. “All these result in a workforce that is more global and diverse in terms of culture, gender and generations,” explains Liew-Chng. “These create new dynamics that individuals, teams, managers and organisations need to deal with on a day-to-day basis for long term benefit.” These new changes bring about fresh challenges for HR and the one-size-fits-all approach is no longer applicable. People managers need to be skilled with the ability to harness and leverage on their differences for increased effectiveness and engagement, notes Liew-Chng. “A new lens is needed to review what still works and what’s new to adopt,” she says, “This could mean reviewing and tweaking the people systems, adopting new channels to create communication platforms that build understanding, approaching diverse groups to build commons, and the list goes on.” With more women in the workplace and changing expectations of work-life integration by the younger
generation, more strategic effort is needed to engage the individuals with competing needs and at the same time deliver value to the organisation. To handle this, HR needs to partner with senior management and line managers to evolve new and more contemporary approaches to managing their diverse talent pool. During her free workshops at the STJobs HR Summit, Liew-Chng will elaborate on three key interventions to further engage a high performing but diverse talent pool. These are: managing by purpose versus managing by outcome, a customised work-life approach based on philosophy instead of policies, and practising woven aspiration versus career paths. “A key role of HR is to keep managers abreast of the trends of the workforce,” says Liew-Chng. “More importantly, they have to provide insights and implications for the organisation’s future and experiment with new ways to improve workplace dynamics.” To find out more about how HR can help improve workplace dynamics for the various groups, attend Cheryl Liew-Chng’s presentations at the STJobs HR Summit Expo on the 24th and 25th of April.

As HR practitioners, it is necessary to ask yourself some tough questions. Are your team members growing or shriveling? Is HR enabling them to flourish, or causing them to wilt? How can HR nourish fellow co-workers without alienating themselves? Rebecca Morgan, renowned author and speaker, will be tackling these difficult issues in her workshop at the STJobs HR Summit 2013. Her presentation, titled “Effectively Growing Your Key Talent” targets not just managers, but also individual contributors who want to know how to keep growing. According to Morgan, it is much less costly to grow talent from within, as current employees already understand the organisation, its systems and its offerings. “You’ve already seen how they get along with others, their work ethic and how they perform,” she

explains. “Obtaining and training employees from the outside is much more costly and it takes a lot more time to get them up to speed.” She adds that employers cannot be sure that workers plucked from elsewhere will be able to fit in and perform. Morgan observes that there are many ways to keep talent well-trained and flourishing, even with few resources available. “Some of the ideas I’ll share don’t require any budget and take just a little time,” she says. “I’ll share 10 of the top ways I have helped HR keep their staff developing, even with few resources.” It is not just workers who have to constantly upgrade and hone their skills. HR has to walk the talk as well. Morgan says that it is critical for HR staff to keep skills on the cutting edge, even if their department does not offer classes or other development practices. Morgan will also touch on ways that HR and department managers can get higher ROI when they send staff for training or conferences. While grooming and developing talent are good practices, they remain pointless if companies are unable to retain their best people. Sometimes, a company’s top talent may still want to leave despite excellent opportunities and salary. In her session, Morgan will be covering why this happens and how to avoid many of the causes, leaving your organisation with its best talent working hard.
Rebecca Morgan specialises in innovative people-productivity improvement solutions. She travels internationally to inspire business people to become more effective. She’s authored and co-authored 25 books, including her two bestsellers, Calming Upset Customers, and Professional Selling. Ranked the top recruitment portal at the Digital Media of The Year Awards in 2011 and awarded Silver for Best in Cross Media Advertising for the Asian Digital Media Awards in 2012, STJobs has undoubtedly emerged as one of Singapore’s leading online jobs portal. When asked about her takeaway on the job portal for the past year, Kee Ee Kheng, Senior Product Manager of STJobs, has this to say: “2012 was a monumental year for us as we built our first iOS and Android apps and organised our inaugural career fair at Suntec Singapore in July, which attracted over 150 exhibitors and close to 40,000 visitors in two days. We garnered 30,000 job listings plus over 200,000 registered users as of December 2012.” STJobs also hit its first double digit – 10 million page views - in September 2012 and won its first award for the Cross Media Advertising category at the WANIFRA’s Asian Digital Media Awards in November the same year. “In 2013, we hope to build more user-centric apps and beef up our content to become the number one career portal in Singapore as we close up the gap with existing competitors,” Kee said.

PROFILE INTERNATIONAL HR
Paclin
Card Evolution In the course of Card Evolution, we have seen progressive changes as cards evolved from the simple laminated versions such as the National ID, Driving License and basic membership cards to present day intelligence cards such as Door Access (contactless RFID), CashCard, licence card, magstripe, barcode, contact and contactless cards. There are now even Hybrid (a combination of magstipe, contact and contactless all in one) and RFID dog tags where an RFID chip is implanted under the skin. Other innovations come in the form of biometric technology and facial recognition. However, readability is 80 to 90% as claimed by most fingerprint readers. Specific physical limitations such as broken or elderly skin prohibit reading. Health and data retrieval issues can also hamper such technology. For example, when the SARS epidemic took place 10 years ago, people were afraid to use touch (contact) technology. Things were a lot simpler before. To create an ID card, all it took was a Polaroid picture (die cut into the correct proportions), a typewriter and a paper name card. The photo would be fixed onto the card where the personal data was typed, then laminated and voila! An ID card
was created. That was 25 years ago but this method of making ID cards is still being used by some neighbouring countries today. When security became a concern after 911, the demand for ID cards expanded exponentially worldwide. Our region was no exception. Anti-fraud ID cards became the order of the day and Magicard found its firm foothold in the market as the economical and reliable option. Unlike other ID cards which use micro text, guilloche print design, fluorescent dyes (UV) printing, Magicard with its holokote and holopatch ID can print a watermark onto each ID card during issuance, hence the pre-printed security method mentioned above now has an additional security done at issuance. As of 2011, Paclin has managed to produce small quantities of pre-printed RFID cards like the Mifare and EM cards in-house. Our sales for RFID cards now regularly run into a six-digit figure, with membership cards exceeding one million cards per order. We have secured many high profile projects like the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 as well as many other projects that will not be named due to signed non-disclosure agreements. We have also been involved in sporting events, providing special-large sized passes that can only be printed by Magicard. The unique size of the passes eliminated many attempts by people to sneak into such events using fraudulent passes, which are easily copied by other brands of credit sized-card printers. Besides racing events, we also use our printers for motor sports events in Macau and Zhu Hai. With the ability to manufacture small quantities of pre-printed cards, Paclin has claimed the top position in card printer sales with over 30% of the market share since 2010. As the sole regional distributor for Magicard, we are able to leverage on this privileged position to expand our reach freely. Today, our operations are present in Malaysia and the region.

Beyond the prime location, excellent business connectivity and maximum comfort, executives will not just come back to an accommodation. Instead, they will return to familiar faces, welcoming surroundings and the assurance that their needs will be taken care of. There are even residents’ programmes such as city tours and workshops on local culture to help them settle in quickly. These are just some of the ways in which Ascott goes the extra mile to make executives’ stay a memorable one. What’s here to stay, though, is the unique warmth and familiarity of home that the leader of the serviced residence industry has been renowned for around the world. With such efforts it is no wonder that many have chosen Ascott as their preferred “home away from home” over the years.
