Integrated Technology

I

ncorporating technology into education is a must in a world that relies more and more on instant access to information and communication. Hardware is constantly being updated and, combined with advances in software, it expands the potential for enriching learning opportunities. Technology in education is not an end in itself, at Stamford American International School the goal is to develop skills that allow each student to make efficient use of the enhanced resources available to them. As part of an integrated educational approach, technology has vastly improved the standard of teaching and learning. Technology in the classroom is now a key part of creating a balanced education that will equip young people for effective participation in the modern world. At Stamford, our curriculum includes two rigorous programmes of study enhanced by technology integration; the International Baccalaureate (IB)* programme encourages a process of guided inquiry aligned with challenging American standards. Incorporating technology into students’ inquiries provides a means to research, a way to develop essential questions, and then a process to support the answering of those questions. In fact, the link between inquiry based learning and the use of

technology related resources in the classroom on a daily basis could not be stronger. This process mirrors technology use in real life where achievement is not based on how well you use the computer but rather how effectively you can achieve success in a project. Stamford is fortunate to have the means to integrate technology in the classroom now and the ability to build a brand new state-of-the-art permanent campus, which will open this August. This has allowed our educational team to incorporate full technology integration across classes and grades to truly use the technology to enhance learning. Some of the unique technology features of the permanent campus include an interactive Library Media Center with a special iPad reading area, the iLEarn interactive learning environment, and collegiate seminar space with global access through real-time video conferencing. Even today, Stamford has dedicated technology access for every student, a 1:1 MacBook programme for our Middle School and High School, and interactive Promethean Boards in every classroom to build students’ comfort and experience with technology and enhance their skills for the future. Students are also able to work with digital content in class as part of the iPad Learning Programme, an integrated programme from Kindergarten upwards using tablets to enhance class activities. As part of the IB framework within our technology-integrated curriculum, Stamford students develop their ability to confidently and effectively use technology to acquire, process and communicate information. Technology is incorporated across subject areas and ensures that all the students at Stamford American International School have a strong fundamental understanding of technology and how it can be used to further enrich their educational experience and their future. + Tel: +65 6602 7247 + Email: admissions@sais.edu.sg + Web: www.sais.edu.sg

Why serviced apartments?

Frasers Hospitality’s CEO, Choe Peng Sum, says that in this changing business climate, with the trend moving towards business executives being assigned overseas for project work rather than long-term relocations, serviced apartments fill the gap between hotels and fixed-term corporate rentals by providing the win-win situation of flexible leases, value for money, location and most importantly the comforts of home. The spokesperson from Le Grove Serviced Apartments says that expatriate staff on projects that are for the duration of one month or more may be more comfortable in a serviced apartment rather than a hotel, especially those travelling with their family. “And if the relocation is on a issue 12.3

long-term basis, one can start off by staying at a serviced apartment while taking the time to select the long-term accommodation options,” she adds. Serviced apartments or long-stay accommodations such as The Club at Capella Singapore are good accommodation alternatives as they are in perfect move-in condition, with a kitchen and living area. “Most are also fully-furnished like a home,” says Lagerway. “The fact that most guests stay for at least a month or two allows them the opportunity to cook and entertain at home, which is not possible in a hotel room.” Nearly all (95%) of Capella Hotels’ inventory are fully-furnished and are in perfect move-in condition. Whether expatriate staff are in town for a week’s assignment or for two years on relocation packages with their families, there is a suitably-sized unit and layout to meet everyone’s needs. Serviced residences go the extra mile to make your expatriate staff feel at home. One guest of The Club fell in love with the show suite as it resembled his home in Europe. “He asked to have his unit furnished and accessorised exactly like our show suite,” says Lagerwey. “We obliged and ensured that each piece was in place to make him feel like The Club was his home away from home.” Le Grove Serviced Apartments, on the other hand, boasts specially selected furniture made of teak ornate tables, custom-made couches and sophisticated colours all matched to perfection. “The result is a warm, cosy home ambience perfect for the discerning resident,” says a spokesperson from Le Grove Serviced Apartments. Furthermore, Le Grove Serviced Apartments is the only serviced apartment in Singapore that offers guests the option of wood flooring or carpeted apartments, catering to the needs of those with asthmatic conditions or allergies. “Many long-term guests extend their stay because they immensely enjoy our superior customer service standards,” says the spokesperson. “For example, our longest staying guest stayed with us since our opening 14 years ago and has only recently returned back home, while another has stayed with us since 2000.” Helping the entire expat’s family settle in is a major priority at Frasers residences, which offer a variety of family-friendly arrangements and facilities to make their stay enjoyable and to also help them integrate into the new country of residence. “This includes a calendar of regular social and recreational activities that foster interaction among residents,” says Choe. “In addition to babysitting services, Fraser residences also feature the Fraser Kids Club, which includes a well-equipped playroom, wading pool and stimulating activities like movie screenings, sightseeing and recreational trips.” As part of the initiative to build and maintain relationships with guests, Frasers Hospitality ensures that guests are served by the same housekeepers for the duration of their stay, in order to provide the opportunity for them to develop an affinity and familiarity with the people within their new living environment. “Over time, our housekeepers grow to know the nuances and idiosyncrasies of our long-stay guests such as when to water their plants, feed their fish, remembering how guests like their pillows fluffed and propped, and placing slippers in the position guests like them,” says Choe. “When our guests consider our staff as an extended member of their family, we know we have played our part well in helping them adapt to their home away from home.”

elocating to another country is a big hassle but, fortunately, there are numerous moving companies that can help with this procedure. According to the 2011 Global Relocation Trends Survey Report, some of the critical relocation challenges include family adjustment (32%), children’s education (29%), and location difficulties (25%). As a result, a growing number of relocation companies are adding extra services to their portfolios that include adjustment education programmes, finding employment for spouses, as well as finding schools for expat children. In addition, relocation companies are using technology to benefit their clients and them – technical programmes that can help expats track their belongings and even check if any of the effects need special packaging according to their different shapes and sizes.

Settling in right

Relocation companies say that they offer a variety of services that will help expats move countries without hassle. “Having an understanding of the corporate’s relocation needs, Crown has the ability to customise a programme to suit,” says Andrew Soon, Regional Director, Crown Worldwide. The global organisation uses both air and sea shipment and helps with tenancy management. Furthermore, Crown provides programmes to help the family adjust to their new environment. “Over the years, Crown has realised that

In addition, each person would be introduced to recruitment agencies as well as networking opportunities. Also, local knowledge and presentation training are shared during the session, to increase the spouse’s confidence, says Soon. The Global Passport programme helps assignees and their families gain an understanding of the cultural differences in both professional and personal relationships. The programme can be customised for families and groups of new hires. It teaches expats how to handle conflicts in their new environment, and adjust their verbal and written communication in order to help them settle into their roles quicker. Furthermore, there is a children’s programme for ages seven to 11 to help them “cope with changes connected to living abroad”, explains Soon. He adds that the presence of Crown offices in various locations globally provides their corporate clients the ease of centralising their relocation needs, as well as the advantages of cost efficiency. Relocating to a new place can be unsettling at times and global relocation company, Santa Fe Relocation Services also provides clients with an area orientation and settling-in programme. Expats are given a tour of points of interest such as hospitals, schools, markets and banks, and covers other important details the individual or family needs to know. Also, Santa Fe provides guidance even after relocating is complete, including answering further questions, assistance with local government authorities and language support. There is also a repatriation service, under which the company helps with the closure of expat housing, collection of the deposit, and sometimes finds temporary accommodation while in Singapore. “Prior to returning home, we provide guidelines to employees to ensure he or she is prepared to return home. Guidelines cover such things as outstanding rental payment, deposits, schooling withdrawal, shipment, employment pass cancellation and other important items that have been provided to the employee,” says Alice Oh, Relocation Manager, Santa Fe Relocation Services. issue 12.3

Technology moves you

Experts say that technology plays a crucial role for global relocation companies. Many have various technical systems in place to help monitor different aspects of the relocation process. Oh of Santa Fe says that the staff and crew use the Move Manager and Relo Assist systems to monitor each process in great detail. Clients, too, can access important information “concerning their move via our password protected website. Information including shipping dates, country profiles and destination customs regulations are available when they need them.” Crown has a new system called RITA (Realtime Interactive Transfer Assistant) that increases the accuracy of data while conducting residential surveys, available in iPad 2 platforms. All sales consultants use this tool during their visit to the expat’s residence. Andrew Soon, Regional Director, “The system has the ability to capture images and measurements for Crown Worldwide odd-shaped furniture or items, and a detailed inventory can be reviewed on-site with the expatriate to minimise any discrepancy,” explains Soon. This information can be tracked online. Similarly, relocation company Cartus makes use of technology to help with its various services and one such programme is the Acadia eProcurement model. “Unique to Cartus is our Acadia eProcurement model, which allows our freight forwarders to pre-bid online for business according to established variables (mode of transport, weight, timing etc.). The system controls cost, improves quality of service and ensures timeliness,” explains Kenneth Kwek, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Asia Pacific, Cartus. Cartus will also be launching the Cartus Mobile App this year to help integrate communication, consolidate The average annual cost information and support service delivery. “This Mobile App of education of children allows timely and effective interactions between all parties for expats is involved in a move and in turn improves the overall service experience. Clients can access information relating to their entire assignee population and the App also allows The Expat Explorer Survey 2011 employees to view details of their move whenever and wherever they may be,” he adds.

Tackling family concerns

One of the major concerns for expatriates when relocating is helping their families settle in, especially for their children at a new school or childcare facility. In The Expat Explorer Survey 2011, research revealed expats’ salaries are a major deciding factor in the type of schools their children attend. Expats who earned higher salaries in countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong and the UAE are more likely to send their children to an international school and pay more for their education. Relocation companies are realising that the services they provide must include assistance for expats to find suitable schools for their children. Crown has devised a pre-location questionnaire to find out the child’s educational requirements. Parents are advised on the necessary documentation for

Looking for the right fit registration and the company conducts a search for a suitable school. This is classified under the school search programme, and includes coordination of school visits and interviews. Fees charged differ according to the programme chosen by the family, with Crown offering educational information to expats who wish to explore the different schools available on their own. Santa Fe also helps to find the right schools for expat children. “Schooling is an important factor in relocating to Singapore, and we cater to each family’s preference by providing them with options and introducing them to each school’s administrator. We ensure that each family is prepared and informed regarding availability, requirements and admission processes,” states Oh. Besides relocation companies, international schools in Singapore are also helping expat children settle into their new environment. Nexus International School Singapore (NISS) allows students to join the school at any time of the year, not just the start of the academic year. The school facilitates the registration process by allowing interested applicants, even when still overseas, to submit their application online and pay administrative fees via telegraphic transfer. “The application is reviewed and, if required, an assessment will be sent to the student. This is followed by a SKYPE interview between the student and the respective Head of School/Language Co-ordinator. Once approved, the student will be required to travel to Singapore to meet the Head of School/Language Co-ordinator in person,” says Siti Radiah Binte Husin, Admissions Executive, Nexus International School. She adds that NISS collaborates with student recruitment agents, MNCs and relocation companies who recommend students to their school, but students need to meet the requirements in order to be admitted. The Stamford American International School also helps expat children help settle in after their relocation. “At Stamford, we run a Buddy Program that matches up new and existing families by area and children’s grade level. We also have a Peer Support Network and a Parent to Parent Program to help welcome new families to the wider school community,” says Director of Admissions and Marketing, Eve Rogove. Also, the school’s Admissions office, Welcome Committee and PTA are support groups to help incoming families tackle challenges associated with relocation, she adds. In addition, the school collaborates with international associations and relocation companies to put the word out about it. “Stamford collaborates with several of the international associations to support community events and is happy to share information about Stamford with members. We also work closely with relocation companies and encourage them to bring clients to visit us and tour our campus during their “look-see” visits or orientation programs,” concludes Rogove.

+ Relocating is no simple business and HR should keep in mind a few pointers to find a relocation company that will help with their needs. + The relocation company should provide before and after relocation services + A global company would be more effective as they would have a wider reach + The company should have the technology to keep clients informed of the whereabouts of their belongings at all times throughout the process + The relocation company should have a proven track record

Crown Relocation Singapore

Crown Relocation Singapore Supports CSR C

orporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has always been Crown Singapore’s top priority; the management believes in helping out those in need and offering them support. In order to make a greater impact, Crown Singapore has partnered with many organisations as well as our corporate clients. Taking part in the American Chambers of Commerce’s Corporate Community Day 2011, Crown sent out a team of 40 volunteers from various departments led by Crown’s Managing Director, Paul Sullivan. They went to Sunbeam Place, which is gazetted as a place of safety for abused and neglected children in need of protection or whose parents are unable to provide proper care. It provides a caring and loving environment for children aged between two to 18 years old and offers enrichment classes, character building education and counselling.

Crown’s volunteers were tasked to maintain the general cleanliness of the dormitory as well as the washing of the toilets, play/study area and windows. As the cleaning team embarked on the quest, another group designed games and kept the children entertained. The young ones beamed with joy as they played the games and won prizes. This was one of the highlights for all volunteers during the four-hour activity. Crown ended the session by having lunch with the children, who feasted on McDonald kids’ meals and played with the little toy that came with it. Crown would like to thank all participants and looks forward to volunteering for more activities like this in 2012.
