Delta Airlines launches corporate traveller recognition programme Moving towards greater acknowledgement of corporate travellers, Delta Airlines recently launched a pilot test of a ‘check-in recognition programme’ for 31 corporate clients, including companies such as IBM and GE. Recognised travellers see a tailored message when they check in at a kiosk, online, or through Delta’s iPad application. During check-ins, this programme will collect data from travellers’ accounts, making note of company affiliation of the business traveller, and greeting them with short and simple messages like “Delta employees worldwide thank you and GE for your business. Enjoy your f light”. Though the gesture may be small, it has a compounding effect on Delta’s

Female business travellers seek leisure time: survey Need some R&R? Many staff look no further than their business trip. Business travel can usually allow the business traveller some leisure time away from the pressures of the office and family life. According to research commissioned by Visit Birmingham, Birmingham’s official leisure tourism programme, workers relish both the personal and business benefits of working away from home on an equal scale. This is especially so for female business travellers, with a third saying that their business travel has increased over the last two years.

The 1,000 employees surveyed revealed the perks of being a business traveller: 50% of female business travellers viewed being able to see a new town or city as the top attraction, and a third enjoyed the luxury of staying in a hotel. Gym and pool access were greatly valued by more than one-fifth of women, and getting away from the family was deemed the best thing about business travel for more than one in ten. Such perks reflect how the needs of business travellers are evolving. Many want to enjoy their time away in addition to getting the job done. That’s especially the case for female business travellers, where one in three women look out for good restaurants and one in five for good shops when booking accommodation.

River Safari will enhance Singapore’s incentive appeal With the addition of the new River Safari to Singapore’s collection of attractions since April 3, the city state is expected to rise as a destination for incentive travel, destination management companies (DMCs) have commented. Widely touted as Asia’s first river-themed wildlife park, the River Safari boasts over 150 plant species and 300 animal species in eight river habitats including those of the Mississippi, Nile and Amazon rivers. Built between the Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari at a cost of $160 million, the 12-hectare park also contains the world’s largest freshwater aquarium. The River Safari will appeal to business event travellers, who are pressed for time, Daniel Chua, managing director of Singaporebased conference organiser Aonia, told TTG Asia. “Clients need to minimise the travel time between destinations and attractions, and Singapore’s density of attractions means event participants can pack their days here with a variety of things to do and places to see.” Dennis Law, managing director of Star Holiday Mart, a travel company specialising in both leisure tours and business events, pointed out that Singapore is already an attractive destination in the eyes of business and leisure travellers, and new options such as the River Safari will be further complements to its appeal.

Small in stature but packs a punch – that’s how many are describing Singapore’s MICE industry at the moment. With a strong business culture, the city state is a corporate destination of choice. “Singapore is a mature and vibrant market for the MICE industry, as seen from the major conferences and niche events held here,” Edward Liu, Group Managing Director of Conference & Exhibition Management Services, said. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) had forecast that 13.5 to 14.5 million visitors will come to the island this year for MICE-related events. With such large figures, the MICE industry in Singapore seems to be looking towards an optimistic future. To keep that vision alive, the industry is scurrying to further strengthen Singapore’s offerings for MICE. This is seen through the business plans of many hotels and clubs, which are aiming to offer something for both business professionals and leisureseeking tourists. Take, for example, ONE°15 Marina Club. Its strong position as a lifestyle destination is complemented by a wide and creative range of teambuilding activities developed by a dynamic team of chefs, trainers, marina experts and event

coordinators, said Peggy Tan, Director of Sales, Marketing and Membership of the ONE°15 Marina Club. This is reflective of the rigorous efforts the club puts in offering something for both work and play. So what offerings meet the typical business traveller’s needs? “What people want are event venues and hotels to be in close proximity, efficient modes of transportation, and comfortable facilities,” Liu says. According to Steven Chung, Senior Assistant Director of Sales, Sentosa, these factors must be orchestrated well together for a success. “Sentosa Leisure Management strives to work closely with all island partners (including hotels, attractions, and entertainment venues) for more cross-sell opportunities and importantly, to create a strong event-capital identity for the island,” he says.

New sounds and sights New tourism attractions can beget new offerings for event organisers. So many are particularly excited about the new Marine Life Park at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). There are two components to the park: the SEA Aquarium and the Adventure Cove Waterpark.

Boasting more than 800 different species of sea animals, the SEA Aquarium debuted with a splash at RWS. Besides marvelling at the underwear paradise, there are numerous dining options that could make for memorable business events. At the Ocean Dome, guests can indulge in the luxurious 180-degree view of the Open Ocean exhibit while sipping on cocktails or savouring a delicious dinner. The nature of the Ocean Dome makes it a suitable location for events with a standing cocktail reception for 50, or a dinner for up to 30 guests. If a more exclusive and private event location is preferred, the Ocean Restaurant by Cat Cora is an option. Female celebrity chef Cat Cora’s dishes and the 12-metre tall view of the Open Ocean exhibit can tantalise both the tastebuds and eyes. If the outdoors is preferred for an event or annual dinner, the Bay Restaurant at the Adventure Cove Waterpark is the king of the office jungle. Guests can indulge in the view of the Waterpark while dining al-fresco at the outdoor terrace. The array of cuisines, ranging from local to Asian and Western, are bound to whet appetites, making this is a definite refresher for the corporate worker holed up in their cubicles for way too long.

Novelty of residence A quality place to stay near event venues is one of the top priorities for business travellers. New hotel developments are seeking to meet this preference and further enhance Singapore’s stronghold in the MICE sector. Parkroyal on Pickering Hotel is quite literally making waves in this effort, with its wave-terraced exterior and water features. The hotel is located near the hub of business activities Singapore, close to both Chinatown and the financial district. But convenience is not the only factor making of Parkroyal an ideal choice; being away from home on business isn’t so bad when rooms come with complimentary internet access and thoughtful amenities like Nespresso coffee machines and designer ergonomic chairs.

This takes a load off the traveller’s back by extending a helping hand whether it be for leisure services like spa appointments, or practical services like shoe shining.

Save the earth - corporate style With the idea of sustainability gaining traction in the business sector, there is no doubt that this has influenced MICE activities in the industry as well. “Green meetings”, which are meetings and conventions carried out in environmentally-friendly ways, are a testament to the changing landscape of MICE and client demands to integrate sustainability into the industry’s operations. Every little bit counts in saving the environment together, and this is best exemplified by Pan Pacific. “For meetings that are held at our Pacific Centre, we provide mineral water bottled in glass instead of regular plastic bottles,” Khoo highlights. The impact of using reusable cups rather than plastic bottles, though small, can snowball to have a bigger and stronger environmental impact in the long run. Looking elsewhere, Marina Bay Sands’ new ECO360° meetings programme provides greener options for meeting planners and clients. The highlight of this programme is the assignment of a Green Meetings Concierge to help clients align the property’s various green offerings with clients’ sustainability goals. Also, detailed feedback of the event’s impact on environmental sustainability is given to every client.

Alternatively, they can also hop on a vintage open-top, double-decker tram and enjoy the city while enjoying some wine and cheese. These are some of the premium activities sought out by MICE planners as luxury MICE travel experiences a growth surge in Asia. The typical luxury MICE traveller is someone from senior management or a high-level executive officer. Such visitors typically demand at least four-star accommodation, customised itineraries where they can enjoy the local culture, private tours and meals at world-class restaurants.

Thailand’s distinctive culture, delicious cuisine and stunning beaches make it a popular destination among MICE planners. The country’s events sector upped the stakes in the industry by launching the ‘Luxury MICE’ initiative in 2011 to attract more high-end MICE travellers. Five Thai destinations: Bangkok, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Samui, were selected for the initiative as they possess exclusive accommodation options, a high-standard of international facilities, unspoiled natural landscapes, and luxury culinary delights. Laguna Phuket is one of the biggest Thai hotel properties catering to the MICE market. USD50) in subsidies is available per delegate for food, beverage or meeting packages. MICE Planning As a meeting planner or event organiser, you’re always on the lookout for suitable activities for staff, and locations to hold MICE events. What does it take to create innovative, sustainable and above all, successful MICE events? HRM finds out By Shalini Shukla-Pandey

The MICE space in Singapore is continuing to flourish with the emergence of new and unique event spaces, including attractions such as the Marine Life Park at Resorts World Sentosa, as well as refreshed and expanded convention spaces such as Singapore Expo’s new convention wing, MAX Atria. “With the overall economic situation looking cautiously optimistic this year, MICE events are likely to be of higher budgets, and event organisers will continue to explore different and compelling prepositions of blending business with leisure,” says Theresa Gan, Vice President – National MICE and Group Sales, Resorts World Sentosa. “Organisers and clients will also want to accomplish more in a single destination.” By providing a wide array of accommodation, attractions, dining and entertainment options, MICE spaces in Singapore are well poised to meet these demands.
