Rewards and Incentives ASIA
Changing benefits mix in Asia Executive benefits in Asia are taking on a more short-term focus. According to Mercer’s 2012/2013 Asia Executive Remuneration Survey, Asian firms have been providing slightly less in the form of long-term incentives for executives, when compared with Western firms. But they paid slightly more in short-term incentives over the last financial year. The fixed-pay element for Asian companies increased compared to last year for all executive levels, and it is now comparable to that offered by Western firms.

Incentive travel up Incentive travel is on the rise, and has been by industry insiders as in a state of “optimistic stability”. “Overall the mood is considerably elevated in the incentive travel community,” says Rodger Stotz, research chair of the Incentive Research Foundation (IRF). “There is a buzz of what’s happening, and it’s very different from four or five years ago when everybody was just in the doldrums.” According to the Spring 2013 Pulse survey, about one-third of planners were either “somewhat” (28%) or “strongly” (3%) negative about the economy’s impact on their ability to plan and implement incentive travel programmes. In March 2009, 86% were negative (evenly split between “somewhat” and “strongly”) about the impact. Forty-five per cent of the planners who responded to the 2013 Pulse Survey said they expected travel programme budgets to remain unchanged. More than twice as many expected a moderate increase (34%) as expected a moderate decrease (15%).

Bosses not measuring reward impacts Most employers do not monitor the impact of their incentive and rewards schemes, or align them to business objectives. According to new research from corporate services provider Edenred, Getting more from employee rewards and incentives, more than half (53%) of employers do not measure the impact of rewards and incentives designed to improve employee performance, even though just 49% believe their existing schemes were cost-effective. In addition, just 23% of the employers surveyed for the report said that they tracked how reward and incentives contributed to specific business goals. Less than a third (28%)
had a defined strategy linking rewards and incentives to business objectives, or highlighted when rewards were merited. Perhaps this indicates a lack of foresight among a small number of employers, since just over an eighth said that they planned to increase their incentive budgets over the coming years. In comparison, just six per cent said that they expected to reduce spending in this area. When asked about their plans for the next 12 months, reviewing the effectiveness of rewards and incentives investments was ranked as the top priority for employers, followed by putting in place a new strategy in this area.
“It is clear that although employers value rewards and incentives as a way of recognising the contribution employees are making, many organisations could realise more from the investment they are making,” said Colin Hodgson, director of sales for incentives and motivation at Edenred. “Employee recognition schemes deliver the best results where there is a strategy that aligns the investment to business-specific outcomes and provides clarity to managers and employees about the kind of behaviours that will be rewarded.” ISSUE 13.10

INCENTIVE EXPERIENCE Hard working staff need something to reward them and look forward to. An end of year trip or teambuilding exercise is often the perfect carrot to dangle, something that keeps them focused and engaged with the job at hand. But not every overseas experience is the same, and tailoring a bespoke incentive experience can add greater value and return on investment for participating staff. When they get more out of their trip, it sets them up for an even more productive and effective year ahead. HRM looks at three very different options for your next incentive trip.
Beachside luxury Your staff are probably suffering from tense muscles and headaches after a slogging away at their desks for the past year. Help them unwind and recharge at the Twin Palms Resort, Phuket. Well-known for its beaches, the resort locale in Phuket combines Thai hospitality with rejuvenating waters and powdered-sand. Twin Palms aims to provide the best receptions for incentive groups, by customising special programmes and packages suited to each company’s individual requirements.
Pamper your staff as they embark on a lavish adventure into a marine playground on board one of the Andaman Cruises’ day trips. Have them soak in the exquisite sailing waters of the Phuket archipelago, before dining on a scrumptious buffet spread at one of the resorts beach clubs. Should your staff be adrenaline junkies, special land tours can be also be arranged to include jungle trekking, river rafting and all-terrain vehicle rides. Famed for holding private VIP parties, Twin Palm’s Bimi Beach Club & Bongo Rum Bar allow guests to dine by the sea, whilst enjoying live music. Here, party-goers can enjoy a stylish, yet stripped down spot to mingle, dance and set free their island spirit along the dazzling shores of Surin Beach. They can also enjoy Asia’s biggest collection of finely-aged, quality distilled rum from around the world, as scents of fresh sugar cane waft through the salty air. Thai hospitality extends throughout the resort, bringing truly unique experiences to guests in their rooms. These services range from an array of pillows or aromatherapy scents to aid in a good night’s rest to having freshly cut flowers and fruits adorn the accommodation. Twin Palms also features a conference centre that accommodates over 100 people in a variety of set-up styles, including a coffee break area.

The animal park is design to allow guests to enjoy two different animal experiences, namely a zoo and a safari, all in one location. With attention-grabbing names of far-flung places such as “Wild Savannah” and “Bear Mountain”, guests can enjoy a tram ride through various showcases of wild animals from Africa to Australia. Many of the animals are also the first of their kind to be featured in Malaysia and Southeast Asia – the elusive White Lions in particular. For many urbanites, it is also an opportunity to see and experience a time gone by, in a traditional Malay Kampong home. Your company will be able to organise team-building sessions within the 2,000 person-capacity amphitheatre, whilst allowing staff to take in views of wild animals amidst natural green surroundings. Also within walking distance is Bukit Gambang’s new Arabian Bay resort, where guests can recharge for the next day of activities. Two room categories are available in the form of a Studio Deluxe and Family Deluxe. There are also eight units of “Arabian” suites that feature a separate living room and a bedroom, as well as two penthouse suites featuring a larger accommodation space and a jacuzzi in the master bathroom.

Guests can continue with antiques shopping at the Shanghai Old Street and Dongtai Road, followed by contemporary shopping on Nanjing Road and Huaihai Road. In the evening, they can enjoy “ERA”, an acrobatic extravaganza at Shanghai Circus World. Guests can conclude the evening at Xintiandi, one of the first lifestyle centres in China. Singapore Spotlight A lush tropical oasis in Southeast Asia, Singapore has been constantly re-inventing itself as it rises up the ranks as an incentive travel destination. New attractions such as the Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, and Resorts World Sentosa have been drawing in the crowds with a host of exciting offerings. Older venues are also keeping things fresh by revamping their own facilities and services.
Planning a trip to remember It is always wise to start the planning process early. Incentive trip planners usually begin sourcing out venues and activities three to six months in advance. However, depending on the availability of venues and rooms, a month’s notice can also work. Some key points to consider in the planning stage include the activity budget, length of stay, guest profile, as well as the objective of the trip, says Sentosa’s Senior Assistant Director of Sales, Steven Chung. Another important factor to consider when planning an incentive trip is for the trip to be fruitful, with time well
spent, says Theresa Gan, Vice President of National MICE and Group Sales, Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). “Clients are constantly exploring different and compelling propositions of blending business with leisure, and to accomplish more in a single destination,” she says. Location and accessibility are critical considerations. If the venue is located a distance away from the city, planners may want to consider making special transport arrangements for employees. It is also important to keep a lookout for something new and exciting, says Gan. At many venues, the landscape and offerings are constantly being updated and new attractions are being built all the time. Do your research to find out more about their latest offerings and promotions.
A world of exclusivity Incentive groups at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) get to enjoy the use of venue spaces exclusively outside of their general business hours. These spaces include key attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore, which is Southeast Asia’s only Universal Studios theme park, as well

as the Marine Life Park. Evening events can take the form of a reception or dinner within the themed zones of Universal Studios Singapore. “The event experience comes complete with unique and all-inclusive of entertainment, attractions and food experience, delivered from start to finish by our MICE team. Different rides, shows and attractions can be included in the package through customisation,” says Gan. Incentive groups at RWS also receive special access to VIP-only accommodation, including through the resort’s invite-only hotel, Crockfords Tower. There are also two and three-bedroom villas available. “This is especially for incentive groups who are looking at exclusive accommodation options for C-suite and above team members. Guests at these hotels will also enjoy butler service and VIP treatment, usually reserved for selected guests,” Gan says. No incentive experience is complete without some great food. While it typically can take up to four days to try the wide-ranging culinary feast that is available at RWS, a customised menu can be arranged for incentive groups to savour the very best of its diverse cuisine offering. “This may include dishes from our celebrity chef restaurants to authentic hawker fares at the Malaysian Food Street, in order to tantalise different taste buds, and to satisfy every craving,” Gan says.
Tropical splendour Sentosa Island offers a range of customised MICE experiences that are designed to make your employees feel like royalty, immediately upon arrival. You can choose to hold your opening reception at Siloso beach where guests will be welcomed with cool tropical cocktails and a comic magician who wanders through the party performing tricks. Jugglers, fire eaters and caricaturists complete the entertainment spectacle. Guests will then be ushered to the Sky Deck, located just steps away. Here, they can sip on the famous Singapore Sling or savour an ice-cold Tiger beer while watching the sun set against one of the busiest ports in the world.

Meetings with a difference
at Bukit Gambang Resort City Located 218 km from Kuala Lumpur and just 35km before Kuantan, Bukit Gambang Resort City (BGRC) is an integrated destination resort that offers a range of unique leisure and MICE facilities. Spread across 727 acres, the resort features 30 different venues and 1,866 accommodation rooms that cater to large groups. A host of recreational and leisure facilities fulfil almost every requirement and need that MICE planners look out for. The challenge involved in finding a large events space is solved with the BGRC Grand Ballroom, which was named the largest pillarless ballroom in the country by the Malaysia Book of Records. The venue makes a sit down round table banquet for 3,100 people or a conference for 5,800 delegates a breeze. The ballroom is also suitable for exhibitions and concerts. Accommodation choices are another critical differentiator for MICE planners. The resort exceeds expectations in this regard with its two integrated themed resorts - Caribbean Bay Resort and Arabian Bay Resort, which offer a combined total of 1,866 rooms. Each resort is supported with its own club house facilities, entertainment, recreation and fitness facilities as well as food and beverage outlets. Go for the Roast Chicken with Chilli Sesame Dressing, Sauteed Black Pepper Diced Beef or the Sauteed Wild Mushrooms with Asparagus and Minced Garlic. For lighter bites, a classic dim sum menu is offered at lunchtime. Majestic Bay is open 7 days a week and offers lunch and dinner.
