Engaged EtHICs On the West Indian island of st Lucia
we’re getting as close as possible to the origins of chocolate – we grow our own cocoa. it’s something that few chocolate makers can do, but it is where our passion for chocolate has taken us. However, the vast majority of cocoa is grown by small holders who can struggle to make a living, which led us to create a unique programme called Engaged Ethics. It’s a handson approach that is helping to improve farmers’ livelihoods in Ghana and St Lucia.

In Ghana we provide over 100,000 cocoa seedlings a year to increase cocoa yields; we fund an expert to give farming advice; we’ve sunk a borehole that provides seven villages with clean water; and this year we intend to purchase a truck so we can reach farmers further afield. In St Lucia, we’re helping to revitalise the island’s cocoa sector through our Cocoa Growers Programme – offering farmers free advice and assistance; the supply of high quality Trinitario seedlings; as well as a guaranteed market for their beans, bought at prices above those of the world market.
