Encouraging ids multitask a lot these days - from Snapchatting to selfies, Tumbler to Instagram and listening to Spotify constant distractions compete for their attention. With so many potential interruptions, it can be difficult for children to stop and focus on the task at hand. Yet, helping children develop self-discipline, effective focus strategies and concentration skills at an early age is a basis for long-term success in high school, college and the professional working world. Here are some practical and manageable tips parents can use to help their children focus, complete their homework and ultimately succeed.

Set Expectations Early

Explain to your children that just as you have many important responsibilities (at home, at work, in your community, etc.), learning is their most important “job” right now. The earlier you set your expectations and establish a routine for learning, homework and studying, the easier it will be to maintain.

Manage Distractions

Although eliminating every possible distraction is nearly impossible, there are ways to manage and minimize the number of things that can pull a child’s focus away. Start with technology: no television, phone or computer until homework is done. Total silence isn’t required, because research has found that certain types of music help people concentrate better, especially classical and instrumental music. 10

Keys Life Magazine

September 2014

Establish Rules for Homework Time There is nothing more distracting than a knock on the door and an invitation to play when it’s homework time. Require that your children’s homework and studying be completed (neatly and correctly) before going out to play.

Create a Workspace

Create a designated place in your home for independent study. This space should be well lit and located in a quiet, low-traffic area with a table or desk that has plenty of room for books and papers and should have all homework supplies readily available. Keep a few extra supplies on hand to avoid those last-minute, late-night dashes to the store for printer paper, poster board, paint, etc.

Rewards

Rewards can be controversial because they can easily become bribes. But the fact is, humans respond to positive reinforcement. If you think a positive reward system will work to help motivate your children, avoid material, monetary or food rewards. Instead, negotiate the rewards based on spending quality time together. Ask your children to think of things they would like to do with you, and then make that a monthly goal.

LAST DAYS of SUMMER

“September 1st, Snook season opens once again here in Monroe County, Everglades National Park and the entire West Coast of Florida. Remember that snook must be 28 inches minimum length and no more than 33 inches in total length. You can harvest one snook per person, per day and you must have a current saltwater fishing permit along with a snook permit. Handling snook is very important to never hang the fish by its lower jaw like you would a Bass; “lipping” a snook of any size can damage internal organs as well as damaging its jaws and muscles surrounding its head and jaw. Support the fish’s weight and hold it horizontal to the water for a photo then quickly release it to fight again.”

by Capt. Matt Bellinger

S

eptember is here and the crowds are gone from here in the Florida Keys. The wonder of it all is that while everyone is prepping for autumn up on the mainland, we here in the Keys are sitting smack dab in the middle of summer. Water temps will remain in the mid 80’s right along with air temps, these warm conditions will remain in place into mid October and as a result it’s pretty much business as usual in our local waters with the added bonus of fewer boats out there. Both sides of the island chain offer great fishing and some time this month we should have the first push of larger dolphin passing by on their way down South from the Carolinas. Many of these fish will be 20 pounds or heavier and these are school fish that passed by the Keys earlier this summer as wee little peanut dolphin! Backcountry and Flats action has been good and the shallow water gangs that love poling the flats around the Everglades National Park are loving life these days! Redfish are grouped up in huge schools and vacuuming up anything in their path! Flats fishing for those who don’t know, is for the shallow minded! By that I mean that you’ve got to get skinny and think skinny, flats fishing begins in 2 feet of water and with the new poling skiffs out now it’s possible to chase fish up into 8 inches or so of water! Here in the shallows redfish, snook, tarpon, sea trout and permit are tailing, mudding and otherwise chomping on

all kinds of crustaceans, fin fish, and just about anything that you can cast in front of their snouts. A huge misconception about flats fishing is that you have to be a fly fisherman and that is so wrong, fly fishing is just for those who have grown tired of catching fish! All kidding aside you can throw flies, plugs, buck tails or bait while up on a flat. Start out with a great pair of polarized sunglasses, this is a visual activity for sure, yes there will be plenty of “blind casting” going on but you will be “sight casting” to a good many fish and polarized sunglasses allow you to see into the water and through the glare on the water. Light tackle spin gear with 10 pound test braid or mono on a matching spinning reel on a 7-8 foot long 8-10 pound class rod is all you need. This flats fishing will appeal to those who love fishing for Bass on the beds, good casting skills play an important part when sight casting so practice, practice, practice. On the ocean side of the Keys you will encounter the most aggravating fish in our waters, the bone fish; broad shouldered, intelligent, belligerent and neurotic as a long tailed cat in a room full of rockers best describes this fish. All it takes is a few encounters with a bone and you will be hooked, it will take more than a few encounters with a bonefish in all likelihood to hook one though. They are a beast once you hook one and you will be amazed at their speed and strength. If you’ve never tried getting up in the shallow stuff

you really need to get with a poling guide and go test yourself, it is a blast. The beaches of East Cape and on up to the north will hold some great fishing this month. Tarpon will be crashing the mullet off the beach, snook and reds will be patrolling the shore lines and sea trout will be plentiful too. There are several creeks that dump into the Gulf and Bay west of Flamingo and beyond the Cape, that pour freshwater out on every falling tide and make for perfect ambush points for the fish we love to fight to set up station waiting for a free meal. Throw small jerk baits and shrimp imitations and it won’t take long to put together catch. Blind casting and drifting with the tide all along the beach between East and Middle Cape lets you cover territory and will produce fish, every time you catch a fish use your Power Pole to anchor up and just grip it and rip it with your rod & reel and cover the water around your boat before you go the drifting again. Expect anything and everything out here on the edge of nowhere in the Park, it’s a great fishery and the most beautiful of scenery along the beach.

Call us at 305-394-0000 to set up your next fishing adventure or check out www.IslamoradaFishingFun.com for information on all of the different types of fishing trips we offer at Bamboo charters.

Par

for the

t’s about tee-totally time that the Conch Scramble is here again! We have been anticipating this event all year!

CaUSe

The Conch Scramble, an annual Golf on the Water Tournament, is a zany, original tournament created to raise money for Upper Keys charitable organizations. The fun begins at the kick-off party of the year on Friday, September 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Food, drinks and entertainment, as well as live and silent auctions will be held at the beautiful bay front home of Bob & Kathy Mau, located at 80839 Old Highway in Islamorada. Tickets will be available at the door the night of and in advance for $35.00. Teams are to meet Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at Islamorada Fish Company, for continental breakfast, cash bar, and the reading of the rules. Teams will head to their assigned first holes in a shotgun start at approximately 9:00 a.m. From there, the teams of four players and one designated driver, scramble by boat from tee to tee, docking and coming ashore where golfers take two shots at the nine holes, using biodegradable golf balls that turn into fish food after 90 hours. The “holes” consist

of two floating rings set from 30 to 120 yards off a dock or beach, located at waterfront venues throughout Islamorada. While ashore, at each themed venue, there will be food, drinks and entertainment to keep the revelers entertained and hydrated before their scramble to the next tee. The fun carries over to the awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m., held at The Ocean View Pub & Inn, after teams have played all nine holes. The awards given out this year will be Most Team Spirit, Best Hole Location, Hard Luck Awards, 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place Teams and Best Individual Score. If you are unable to attend either event days you will still have a chance to bid online on all of the great items that range from exotic vacation getaways to donated items guaranteed to please. The online portion of Conch Scramble Tournament 2014 will remain open until September 26th, in which the live event takes place at the kickoff party. The money raised this year will be donated to two benefactors, one being the Upper Keys Foundation, Inc., a local 501(c)(3) whose mission is to secure a solution to the Monroe County School Board eliminating all athletic appropriations and the second is The Plantation Key School PTA, who sets yearly goals that promote the welfare and education of children while taking into account current school needs. 18

GOODBYE SUmmER, HELLO FALL September 22nd is the official last day of summer and the first day to welcome fall, but with school already being in session for a month who has been paying attention?

L

iving in the Keys we do not get the full effect of fall, but that is why we live here, right? But for some who still crave the pleasures of fall, while living in paradise, you can throw a party to help get you in the mood for the season. At the same time you can show your kids that you appreciate the hard work they have done in school thus far, while creating the perfect occasion (excuse) to get together with your friends to reflect upon the summer days gone by and to discuss the next holiday gathering.

CARAmEL APPLE CAkE Shaped like a country-fair caramel apple, this fun dessert recipe is sure to inspire oohing and ahhing at any fall gathering.

things you’ll need 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 tsps cinnamon • 1 tsp ground cloves • 1/2 tsp allspice • 2 tsps baking soda • 1 tsp salt • 2 eggs • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar • 2 cups unsweetened applesauce • 1 cup vegetable oil • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 60 caramel candies • 3/4 cup walnuts, toasted and finely chopped • wax paper • 1 large craft stick •

Heat the oven to 350 degrees • grease and flour two 1 1/2-quart oven-safe bowls • combine 3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground cloves, 1/2 teaspoon allspice, 2 teaspoons baking soda and 1 teaspoon salt • in a separate bowl, beat together 2 eggs, 1 1/2 cups brown sugar, 2 cups unsweetened applesauce, 1 cup vegetable oil and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients and beat until well mixed • pour the batter into the prepared bowls and bake for 60 to 70 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean • allow the cakes to cool in the bowls for 10 minutes, then remove them from the bowls and set them inverted on wire racks to cool completely. Once the cakes have cooled, turn them over and use a long knife to even out their flat tops Topping: Place 60 caramel candies and 2 tablespoons of water in a medium bowl and microwave on high power for 1 minute. Stir, then heat 30 to 45 seconds more until the mixture is smooth and forms a slow, thick ribbon when dropped from a spoon. Layer the cakes (flat sides together) using a few spoonfuls of the caramel to help hold them in place • pour the remaining sauce over the cake. The caramel will run down the sides of the cake to cover it completely, or you can spread it with a knife while it’s still warm • let the caramel set for about 20 minutes before pressing the walnuts onto the bottom half of the cake • to add a variety, and for those with peanut allergies, create a batch of cakes with crushed graham crackers, m&m’s, chocolate chips, marshmallows, etc...the deliciousness is endless.

Praise and Positivity

Even with the best intentions and optimal study conditions, getting children to settle down and focus can be challenging, especially if they have difficulties with concentration and attention. But with practice, patience, persistence and positivity, a good routine can be established within a month. Offer specific praise to children that highlight their progress - not just results - such as “I’m proud of you for completing your math worksheets and for getting to the next level” versus a general “Good job!” Don’t forget to also praise the child’s progress and not just the end result.

Communication

Be sure to communicate homework guidelines to after-school caregivers so they can create a consistent, positive and focusfriendly work zone. Create a written list that after-school caregivers can follow that details your expectations, from the quiet, distractionfree environment to the amount of time that should be allotted for homework and study time. Even if you cannot be home while your children are doing their homework - take time to check it and let them know you are engaged.

Learn What Work Style Works

Children need to see and understand the value of study, but remember that people have different ways of learning and processing information. Make it a collaborative effort to find the methods that work best for their study style. Some children may work better if they are able to walk around and think out loud. Some children do better lying on the floor with their books spread around them. Others need quiet, stillness and structure. As long as they are making good progress, be flexible about what works for them. Being able to focus, concentrate and maintain good study habits are life skills that will set your children up for success in all aspects of their lives - from the baseball field to the stage. It’s not just about completing assignments, it’s about establishing self-discipline and perseverance that will give them the ability and confidence to pursue goals, manage setbacks and know what it takes to achieve.
