OCTOBER WINDS “Whether you fish the skinny water or down in the deeper stuff, October will hold your attention.”

by Capt. Matt Bellinger
O
ctober has arrived and we may or may not see cooler weather, as summer is officially over . . . well at least for the most of the country . . . but here in the Florida Keys we will see plenty of warm weather for a good while. There will be a few “cold fronts” that come through and these will be mostly wind events. A north wind will get things moving this way though. Bait pods offshore will start swimming by and that will get the fish chompin’! October will offer a good bite of mahi, blackfin tuna, and kingfish and with some luck sailfish will start showing up. Backcountry and Flats fishing fans enjoy a break from the crowds and permit, bonefish and smaller tarpon will be found to be more cooperative. The Everglades National Park shines all year long and the cooler weather will help with the bite; trout, reds, snook and more will be plentiful. If you like sight fishing and challenges, then I’d like to introduce you to the permit. I love fishing for these magnificent fish! They are forked tailed devils, yet they are as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rockers. Permits are a vexing beast to say the least, with the vision of an Eagle 6

and the reflexes of Bruce Lee all rolled up into a sleek hydrodynamic polished silver body. These fish will make you crazy as you look for them on the crown of the flats on an incoming tide, then they can appear from nowhere and vanish just as fast. Crabs and shrimp are what bait fishermen throw and the fly boys are brave enough to sling fur, feathers and thread in the shapes of shellfish too. I’ve had old Rubber Lips pick up a crab and “feel” my crab offering only to drop it for no good reason and then pounce on the same crab on a following cast as the crab scampered across the waters surface! You never can tell with these fish. As you search out a permit don’t be surprised if you come across tarpon and bonefish along the way and they will eat the same baits. Backcountry waters offer such an array of fish to catch this time of the year. Cooler waters will bring a longer window to catch throughout the day; water temps won’t climb to the point where the bite shuts down. Sea Trout will get going over a wider area of the Glades and with luck Spanish mackerel will get going out into the Gulf of Mexico and they will stay here until early spring.
The waters around Flamingo in the Park will fire up with redfish, snook, trout and smaller tarpon. Whether you fish the skinny water or down in the deeper stuff, October will hold your attention. Mangrove snapper can be found throughout the Park and this year I’ve seen the best snapper bite in years; big fish over 15 inches are all over, big baits = Big SNAPPER. Pinfish live or steaks work wonders, stay away from live shrimp! Chunk baits and big live baits will keep the smaller snapper away and you can still hook up reds and snook at the same time. If you want a knock down, drag out fight start shark fishing now, ladyfish or crevalle jack split down the side will get you in a fight in no time outback. Bull sharks, lemons and blacktips are in good numbers out there...so get out there and GO FISH!
Call us at 305-394-0000 to set up your next fishing adventure or check out www.IslamoradaFishingFun.com for information on all of the different types of fishing trips we offer at Bamboo charters.

turtle S y m b o l i S m
A
great deal of mythology exists in regard to the turtle. In the Far East, the shell was a symbol of heaven, and the square underside was a symbol of earth. The turtle was an animal whose magic united heaven and earth. The turtle is a creation of nature that carries its round shell over the ground, like heaven, and has a flat bottom, like earth. With a profile resembling a mountain and the turning motion of its toes, it seemed to be a depiction of heaven and earth changing constantly through the seasons. In the West, early Christians didn’t like turtles, and they viewed them as symbolizing evil forces during war. In Greece, turtles were once believed to be citizens of hell. But like the Chinese, Indians have a legend that “the world is supported by four elephants standing on a giant turtle.”
Turtles seem to possess an enviable and god-like resistance to aging, and so they came to symbolize longevity. Their link to heaven and earth made them a natural for use in divination. Turtles are also symbols of immortality and are considered temporary dwelling places for souls making their way through a series of lives on the path to Nirvana. The turtle is considered to be the second incarnation of the powerful god Vishnu in the Hindu religion. After a great flood, which occurs every four billion years and dissolves the earth, Vishnu transforms himself into a great turtle. On his back, he carries a vessel in which the gods and demons mix the elements necessary to re-create the globe. After a thousand years, when the earth has been reborn, the turtle remains in place and on his back stands a large elephant, which support the planet. According to some Native American tales, the Earth Diver turtle swam to the bottom of the water that stretched across the world. He surfaced with the mud which the creator used to make the earth. The turtle is a shore creature, using the land and the water. All shore areas are associated with doorways to the Faerie Realm. The turtle is sometimes known as the keeper of the doors. They were often seen as signs of fairy contact and the promise of fairy rewards. A Japanese Fairy Tale about Urashima tells of a man who protects a turtle from some boys who were bothering it. As a reward, the turtle takes the man to meet the King of the Ocean. As a reward for his good deed, Urashima marries the King’s beautiful water sprite daughter. In Nigeria, the turtle was a symbol of the female sex organs and sexuality. To the Native Americans, it was associated with the lunar cycle, menstruation, and the power of the female energies. The markings and sections on some turtles total thirteen. In the lunar calendar, there are either thirteen full moons or thirteen new moons alternating each year. Many believe this is where the association with the female energies originated. The turtle symbolizes the primal mother and Mother Earth.

To the modern Chinese, turtles are viewed in many different ways. It is regarded as one of the four divine animals, along with the dragon, phoenix and chimera. They are worshipped in temples. Flour turtles used to be used as offerings at temple festivals or big family events. However, the term turtle is also used as a curse word, and the Taiwanese expression for gamblers “losing your shirt” translates as “knocking turtles”. Apart from gamblers’ fears that eating a flour turtle will turn their luck sour, turtles have many other bad connotations in modern Chinese society. In fact, when people curse each other these days, the first thing to come out is often “turtle egg” or “grandson of a turtle”. Even so, the image of the turtle as a spiritual beast has become deeply implanted in people’s minds. One ancient text warns its readers not to act rashly when catching turtles and always to carry out the proper ceremony to worship them first. There are also many legends about how those who killed turtles eventually met with misfortune. Common Buddhist restraints against the killing of animals evolved into the Buddhist ceremony of releasing turtles. Turtles remind us that the way to heaven is through the earth. In Mother Earth is all that we need. She will care for us, protect us, and nurture us, as long as we do the same for her. For that to happen, we must slow down and heighten our sensibilities. We must see the connection to all things. Just as the turtle cannot separate itself from its shell, neither can we separate ourselves from what we do to the earth. Sea Turtle Nesting Season remains in effect in the Florida Keys until October 31, so please follow all guidelines. To learn how you can help, log onto Marathon’s Turtle Hospital website, turtlehospital.org or take a tour through their Guided Educational Experience. Call today to find out more 305.743.2552.

After hearing a Western scientist clearly give a scientific explanation for the formation of the world, one old Indian woman said that he was wholly mistaken, that the world was being supported by a giant turtle. When the scientist asked what was under the turtle, she said, “Of course there is an endless pile of turtles, one on top of another.”

One of the tastiest delicacies is back on the menu as stone crab season kicks off. From October 15 through May 15, Florida fishermen— recreational and commercial alike—hit the waters with crab traps in tow.
14
Keys Life Magazine
October 2014
The stone crab claw is sought after for its light, sweet meat, which, when served with freshly drawn butter and a squeeze of lemon will make a believer out of the most stubborn landlubber. A pretty fickle creature, the crab lives in estuaries, grass beds, reefs and rocky jetties, feeding mainly on oysters. When not dining, stone crabs spend most of their time scurrying or burrowing away from predators. When it comes to the fishery, stone crabs are unique in that they are somewhat sustainable. Only the claws are harvested; they pop off with some ease when twisted correctly, allowing fishermen to return the clawless crab back to the water as they move from trap to trap. It is legal to collect both claws if they are of legal size, as both will regenerate over time, but fishermen are encouraged to collect only one per
crab. When declawed, stone crabs change their behavior, changing from predator to scavenger and relying more on concealment than open foraging. Dining on seagrass and whatever carrion they can find, the life of a declawed stone crab is probably no picnic, with predation becoming a much larger threat—no claw for defense—though the stone crab’s primary predator, the octopus, is perfectly adept at dining on the crustacean regardless if it’s clawed or not. As for stone crabs that have found their way into multiple fishing seasons of being declawed, there is a simple telltale sign. On the inside of the claw (facing the crab), there are lines resembling a fingerprint. If these are unbroken, it’s the crab’s original claw; if they appear broken, it has been regenerated. With stone crab being fresh on the brain, you must stop by Casa Mar Seafood Fresh Seafood Market, 90775 Old Highway, Tavernier (open 7 days a week) for the freshest claws in town. Now, that you have your claws on the claws, it is time for you to prepare some of these delicious stone crab claw dipping sauces. Continued on page 32

wo stone crab species call Florida’s waters home: the Florida variety, Menippe mercenaria; and the Gulf species, Menippe adina. While the coloration appears slightly different - the Gulf variety appears a little darker/redder - they largely taste the same and interbreeding is common, creating hybrid zones.

Many signs point to an improved real estate market. Some are more obvious than others. In markets like ours, real estate is making strides toward recovery. Buyers are taking advantage of low interest rates and investing in their future through homeownership. It all adds up to the four bold letters every buyer (and seller) wants to see: S-O-L-D. If you’re in the position to buy a home, now may be the time. Trapping Regulations
• Traps must be pulled manually (not by a trap-puller). Any vessel that is rigged with a trap-puller will be considered a commercial vessel and the appropriate licenses will be required. • Traps must be pulled only during daylight hours. • Traps must not be placed in navigational channels of the Intracoastal waterways, or in navigational channels maintained and marked by any county, municipal, state or federal governmental agency. Both claws of a stone crab may be harvested lawfully if they are of legal size. Although it is currently lawful to harvest both of a stone crab’s claws, this practice leaves the stone crab with few alternatives to defend itself from predators. Although the crab can still obtain minimal amounts of food with no claws, having one claw (if the other one is harvested) will enable the crab to obtain greater amounts of food in a shorter amount of time. Stone crabs (like other crustaceans) have the ability to grow back their claws, but this process requires a large amount of energy in the form of food. The quicker the crab can obtain the energy required to molt and grow its lost claw, the sooner this renewable delicacy will have another claw to replace the missing one.
Must be at least 2¾-inch

raps may be placed in the water 10 days prior to the opening of the season, but once placed, you may not tend to the traps until the start of the season, at which time you may begin harvesting.

CELEBRATE the LOCAL CATCH Lowcountry Boil is not just a dish—it’s an event. A one pot wonder meant to be enjoyed with cold beer and great friends. Invite everyone, line your picnic tables with newspaper, dump out the spread and let the lip smackin’, finger lickin’ feast unfold.
Created for the 12 qt. stockpot Serves: 4 - 6
• 2 medium sweet onions, peeled but not trimmed, quartered lengthwise from stem to root
Ingredients
• 3 ears fresh corn, shucked and cut into thirds
• ½ cup (at least) Old Bay Seasoning • 16 small new potatoes, about 1-inch diameter, rinsed but not peeled (about ¾ lb.) • ½ lb. smoked sausage (kielbasa), cut into 16 ½-inch-thick coins
• 16 largest available fresh shrimp, preferably with head on (you may want more depending on size of shrimp) • 8 stone crab claws (about 2 lb.)
Photo courtesy of peter frank edwards
Directions Bring a large stockpot (at least 12-quart) of water (filled 2/3 of the way, about 9 quarts) to a simmer. Add Old Bay and simmer to infuse. (The water should be abundantly seasoned and aromatic.)
kernels are slightly softened, about 3 minutes. Add shrimp and crab claws, and cook until the shrimp becomes pink and white (instead of opaque), about 5 or 6 minutes. Strain solids from cooking liquid, and transfer them to an oversize platter.
Add potatoes, sausage coins, and sweet onions, and bring to a lazy simmer until potatoes are fork tender, about 15 to 18 minutes.
Serve with soft butter and olive oil (for potatoes and corn), sea salt, Tabasco, and cocktail sauce. Lemon wedges and chopped hot peppers (like jalapeño) are also sometimes served as accompaniments.
Keeping water at a lazy simmer, add corn, and cook until 26

Interview | Mike Puto, Mr. Marathon
M A R AT H O N ’ S
We are at the Turtle Hospital with Richard Moretti, who is the director and founder of the Turtle Hospital. Richie - thanks for having us here. Well...nice to have you here. When was The Turtle Hospital founded and how did it get started? Give us a little time frame of what you’ve been through here. Well, I’ll give you a quick thirty years. [laughs] I came down during the The Mariel Boatlift in 1980 to rescue people. I had a fast boat and there were people drowning between Cuba and the United States, so I thought we’ll come down and rescue people - I got here and they didn’t want our help so we wound up fishing and I found out that I loved the Florida Keys. There was an opportunity to buy a little motel back in 1980 so I bought it and started coming down on the weekends fixing it up and I thought wow this is great! I mean I was in Orlando and I thought I was on top of the food chain - I had a plane, I had boats and horses and I thought I was really happy. I bought this old motel and the people that lived there they were making maybe $200 a week as a waiter and I found out they were happier than I was. So about four years later I started getting a little stressed. I had a 125 mechanics in Orlando working on Volkswagens and I decided to retire for my 40th birthday, so I came back to go fishing. So I showed up in Marathon with a 50 ft boat and a lady friend, Tina Brown, who wanted to be a fishing captain - so she got a 24ft boat and I had my 50ft boat. We went fishing all of the time and that was great back in 1984 - we even won the Triple Crown. We were hot fisherman! And then we got to February... and it was getting rough offshore and there wasn’t any fish, then we saw these boats at 7 Mile Bridge with orange buoys, so we asked what are they doing? They said “well they are tarpon fishing”. Well what do you do with tarpon, they said “well you catch them, you pat them on the head and then you let them go or bring them in for a picture”. Well we went out there and spent about two weeks before Tina caught her first tarpon. And she was absolutely thrilled! We broke off the first half or dozen or so. In those days we weren’t very smart - we used to hang the tarpon up for their picture (nobody would do that now) or we would just let them go by tapping them and then letting them go. Well she couldn’t make up her mind so we decided that I would add a fresh water pool at the motel, so we thought why don’t we bring her tarpon in and
throw them in our salt water pool, that way she could make up her mind and the fish wouldn’t die while she was waiting. So we brought her first one hundred and twenty pound tarpon in and that was our first pet in the salt water pool. Well we had so much fun playing with him that we had to put in my first tarpon, my daughters, my attorneys...and so over the next year we filled it with a school of tarpon, snook, bonefish we had jewfish, we had sawfish; we had lobsters that would eat out of our hands. Well all the children up at Sue Moore wanted to come by and see all the fish, so then the schools asked if we would do a little program for the local schools. Well I thought we could do that because we could go out on the outer islands and find starfish or conch up on the beach. We thought that children just do not know that these are living animals. So you know (I have no education) so I just started teaching some very basic information like when you take something out of the ocean, you have to hold your breath and when you have to breathe, put them back in. And so we started doing these educational programs. Well then something new came along. All of a sudden these children started talking about green sea turtles. And I didn’t know what they were talking about. Well they were talking about the Ninja Turtles because they had just done the movie, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I remember it well. Yes sir. And they were just so excited! So I went to the state, I asked how do I get a green sea turtle for my educational program? And the state said they are endangered, you can’t have them for education...unless you do something for them and I asked what do you need. They said they needed a rehabber. I asked; what’s that? Well if a turtle gets hit by a boat you take it to the vet, you pay the bill, you buy the medicine, you pay the bill, you buy the food, you pay the bill and when they’re healthy you let them go. Well that was pretty close to what I used to do in Orlando fixing Volkswagens. Ok [laughs] Because in those days I had to find the best mechanics and the best parts. So now I have to find the best Vets and we’ve done that with Doug Mader, he’s our chief vet and he keeps our turtles kicking right along. And we have to find the best meds for our turtles, so it’s kind of the same. Yes, good point. And you’ve done a really great job with it. It’s kind of neat of how you’ve
organized everything. And you know the nice part about it? People used to love the work I would do on their Volkswagens but every now but someone would complain about a bill. Well, this is great because we pay the bill. The turtles that come in have no insurance. [laughs] People will come in here and ask, how do you afford this? I mean...as you can see the type of equipment we use. Oh, it’s huge! You know we look at each turtle as that one turtle might make a difference of whether or not your grandchildren will be able to see a turtle. When an animal becomes an endangered species, each one becomes very, very precious, so we fight for every turtle that comes in. Oh and you do a great job! And I know that by not only through your education program but we have been on a lot of different programs that you’ve invited me on. Tell us a little bit about the releasing of the turtle. I think that’s very big on how it goes through the program. You know over the years we have probably done as much of the rehabbing of the turtles (individually) as we’ve probably done with the
entire amount of good publicity. People can see that there is a place in the Keys that a turtle can come and get the best care. That’s why all of our locals are so good about when they find a turtle that’s wrapped up - and our commercial fisherman - they are always bringing us an entangled animal. But that took twenty-five years. Remember, I started when they were in kindergarten but over the years the amount of people that have been here, like our former President Jimmy Carter who was here to release a turtle with us...it just shows how important they are and it makes it hard for people to discard them. I mean people will call us from their boat and say we’ve found one out here that was hit by a boat, but he’s dead. I ask them to just take a picture and provide us with the coordinates and we’ll do a report from here. But even the dead ones, we would like to know about, that way we know what’s happening to them. I’ve been out on the boat before and we found a dead one and we were at least able to get it in the boat so we brought it in. We also brought in a couple that was injured. I was lucky enough to Continued on page 38

Interview | Mike Puto, Mr. Marathon | Continued From Page 31 have your cell phone so I called and you said “bring it in Mike, we’re ready to go,” you met us at the dock and it was really kind of neat. To be able to do something and preserve this turtle, save the turtle. And they are very valuable to us. Without a doubt, you’ve done a phenomenal job here with your staff. Well you know it’s always changing shape. Years ago the motel used to fund it and then Wilma took out the motel and we’ve done the educational program. And we do those a few times a day and that’s how we pay all of the bills. I donate the property for a dollar a year. Now if I look at it in hindsight, I would say I wish I would have never opened the motel, I wish we would have had educational programs for twentyfive years. I’d have an army of turtle lovers by now. Well you know it’s building up; we’ve come a long way. And again, I mean here you are coming over for The Mariel Boatlift and you buy a motel. [laughs] That’s kind of awesome. And come to kill fish and wound up saving turtles. [laughs] Exactly. This is really a huge program, and it’s nice - the sterile area that you’ve got here and everything that you do is for the turtles. And again with what you’ve got going here, we’re saving the turtles, whether it is a small one or a huge one; they all have a chance to survive and including the hatchlings. We did the hatchlings out there on Sombrero Beach, where you were big at saving the hatchlings and making sure they made it out to the water. And you know we still do that. I had one the other day. I had a green maybe a little bigger than a fifty cent piece and I took it about halfway to Cuba. We like to go way out on the easterly edge of the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream runs around and when it goes up passed North Carolina it splits - the outside edge goes out to the Azores and the inside goes to Greenland. I never get a card from Greenland. [laughs] So when we release turtles, we like them way out there. But before we release a turtle we troll up and down
to make sure there are no mahi mahi and no wahoo’s. So when we troll and we do not catch any fish, that’s our favorite spot. We will put the turtle right in the middle of that weed line that’s heading toward North Carolina. It has always been fun to participate in your releases. Whether it was Little Duck Key or whether when Aliana was here, or when we had the Governor here, releasing them off the 7 Mile Bridge. A little bit on the bigger side, into the water they went. It was kind of neat to be able to say we brought this in, weren’t sure it was going to make it, and six, seven, eight months later, boom, now it’s back in the water. It gives you kind of a neat feeling that we really did some good here. It would nice to tag them and find out how many babies they have. Awe that would be great! That would be awesome, wouldn’t it? Yeah, you know we look at each one as just as critical and everything that we can do. People will say they see us taking babies out into the ocean and ask why don’t you grow them up. Because we have to keep them as natural as possible. Like our beaches...when you stay at a hotel here in town, you’ll usually have something that hangs on the door that will say “please close your drapes during the summer so that you don’t attract the turtles”. So the whole community works together, whether it’s our commercial fisherman, our Charter Boat Captains, or motel owners. They all work to make sure that the beaches do not get any lights and make sure that the fishing gear does not get tangled around them; we all work together. Well it’s a great program and what you’ve done is just unbelievable. I mean you’re a legend in reference to saving the turtles and I am very pleased to be a part of that with you. You know you call me up and say we’ve got this and that going on...and to be able to go out on the boat with you, and be a part of it...it is kind of neat and it’s nice to have you as a friend and what you do here in Marathon. Thank you so much, and I have to say, as many things as we have done over the last twenty-five - thirty years; when we had that foot of rain that fell within an hour, you came and kept the hospital from flooding. I will never forget that.
Well...no problem. Thank you for having us here and this is really a totally awesome place and Richie thank you very much for having us be To Rep part of your program. ort A Turtle Until next time gang... In Distres You’ve gotta love it! 305.48 s 1.7669 38
