LOCAL CHATTER By Sydney Schuhmacher Baseball star Wade Boggs insisted on eating chicken before every game, while tennis star Bjorn Bork would always grow a beard before a Wimbledon match. But every level of athlete has their own quirks and methods for dealing with the jitters before the big game. On the eve of the Marathon High School’s Regional Quarter Finals against the Greater Miami Academy’s team, the Weekly caught up with the team to ask …

What is your game day superstition or tradition? “I always get coffee before a game, and it’s always the same vanilla latte from Curly’s Coffee,” said junior Chandler Elliott, #4. Chandler also said that she has a lucky pair of game day underwear. The Michigan-born girl came to Florida during her eighth grade year, and has been playing with Marathon High’s varsity soccer team ever since.

“I actually have this one sports bra that I wear strictly for games,” said Gabby Ceja, #5. She began playing soccer for Marathon High in seventh grade, the youngest age public school kids can compete in contact sports at that level. Gabby attended a different school for her sophomore and junior years, but came back to finish her senior year at Marathon High as a soccer champion.

Grace Kirwan, #7, has a lucky headband for game day. “My friend Bailey gave it to me when she got hurt because it was her lucky headband, and ever since I’ve been wearing it I’ve been playing better. I never forget it,” Grace said. She’s been with the team since she was in seventh grade. She was sidelined last year with an injury, but has been tearing it up her freshman year.

When asked about her game day superstitions or traditions, Savannah Schuhmacher, #11, smiled and said “My cleats are lucky; I don’t wash them between winning games.” The Homecoming Queen has been continuously playing soccer for Marathon High since seventh grade and says there’s never a dull moment in her senior year.

Takara McKnight, #1, said she spends time preparing mentally. “I always listen to music to get my head focused and in the zone. Any type of music can be game day music, but the best kind is fast and more hardcore,” Oh, and she drinks lots of water before a game. Having been on the varsity team since eighth grade, the sophomore is prepped to grow with the team.

The one-cent sales tax would generate enough to cover all fire and rescue services in the Keys, including Trauma Star.

By Sara Matthis and Jason Koler

M

onroe County is researching a proposal to add a one-cent sales tax that could fully fund fire and rescue services in Monroe County and its municipalities. County staff’s first move will be to reach out to the state Attorney General for some clarifications on the state statute authorizing the taxation. Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers, who initiated the conversation, was vocal in its support. “We are talking about reducing taxes and sharing some of the burden for essential service with our visitors,” Carruthers said at Wednesday’s meeting, adding that excess revenues estimated at $5 million could be used to improve social services for children, seniors and the working poor of Monroe County. The state statute enabling the taxation proposal was approved by the legislature in 2009 and amended just last year. However, if Monroe County pursues the proposed sales tax, it would be

the first to do so. “Despite the fact that it’s been around for so many years, nobody has implemented the optional sales tax — not a single county or city in Florida. And only a couple have looked at it,” said Monroe County Attorney Bob Shillinger. The statute says municipalities or county government may seek the public’s approval for the sales tax, provided it offsets ad valorem (property) taxes for homeowners by the same amount. The one-cent sales tax in Monroe County is expected to generate $34 million — $5 million more than the county and cities currently spend on fire and rescue. However, the law does not establish how the excess money may be spent. Carruthers has proposed it be used to fund social services. United Way President Kate Bauer-Jones spoke in support of the extra sales tax, citing the 48 percent of Monroe County’s working families who do not earn enough money to cover monthly bills including housing, medical care and food. “My organization and I urge the board to ask those questions, get some of those answers and see if there is any ability to help meet the additional needs of the citizens and working families of Monroe (County),” she said. Supporters of the proposal say funding fire and rescue services with a sales tax benefits the residents of Monroe County because 60 percent of all sales tax is paid by visitors. Tourists are also frequently served by local fire and rescue departments. “I would guess that 50 percent of our calls involve tourists,” said Monroe County Fire Chief James

Current Sales Tax — 7.5% 6% base state rate 1% county infrastructure funding* .5% school district capital funding* (*Sales tax renewed periodically through referendum. Callaghan. “That’s not just people involved in traffic accidents, but also tourists who suffer strokes and other medical issues.” Callaghan said he supports the sales tax. “I think it’s a good thing for fire services. A lot of the cost will shift to out-of-county people who use this system,” he said. Carruthers cited a $54,000 statistic for Monroe County median household incomes. “If we take out costs for housing and food and medical care, only about $20,000 of that is spent on purchases that generate sales tax. That amounts to $200 extra every year,” she said. Opponents have a laundry list of objections. They say the tax shift benefits homeowners, but not renters. They also want clarification on how the revenues

will be split between the county and cities. And Monroe County Commissioners Danny Kohlage and Sylvia Murphy say the statue is poorly written and possibly a distraction from other county business. “I think our focus should be razor sharp right now on the [Florida Keys] Stewardship Act. We can’t go wandering off into the wilderness with something as controversial as this is going to be,” Kolhage said. Murphy called the bill’s writing “loose,” but Commissioner George Neugent said there’s no reason my why the county can’t pursue two avenues of funding for the Keys at once. Upper Keys resident and small business owner Robbie Majeska said such a sales tax would hurt the economy. (Majeska recently launched a campaign for Murphy’s seat on the County Commission.) “The sales tax would negatively affect low-income residents because if they don’t own a house they don’t get the benefit [of the tax shift from ad valorem taxes],” he said, adding that his customers may opt to shop on the mainland or internet rather than locally. “Remember when the Florida lottery was going to fund education? How many times can we pull the wool over people’s eyes?” According to Shillinger, the tax statute stipulates the sales tax must offset ad valorem taxes. And the one-cent sales tax is only applicable to the first $5,000; for example if a car is bought in Monroe County the entire purchase amount would not be subject to the tax. Further, the ratio for the distribution of funds is based on a five-year average of fire and rescue department budgets. Kohlage questioned whether that would be fair to Key West which recently brought the rescue services in house. And Neugent also wondered if the revenues collected would also be used for large, but intermittent purchases, such as new ambulances. “We have to beware of the unintended consequences, but there are other considerations regarding things we haven’t discussed such as insurance premiums,” Neugent said. “This sales tax might — underline might — help stabilize costs in Monroe County.” Page 4 • Upper Keys Weekly • Jan. 22, 2016

Trauma Star Weekly Staff report

M

onroe County’s Trauma Star is a helicopter medical service that serves the entire county. In existence since 2002, it provides an important service to both residents and visitors of the Florida Keys — a quick flight to the mainland for advanced medical treatment and care. If Monroe County elects to enact the one-cent sales tax to fund fire and rescue services, the Trauma Star department could very well be a beneficiary of the funds. The department — a joint operation between Monroe County Fire Rescue and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office — employs four nurses, six

medics, five pilots and a handful of helicopter maintenance technicians. The helicopter, a 1986 Sikorsky S76, has been in service for 10 years. “Although the airframe dates to 1986, the motors are not that old,” said Captain Andrea Thompson. “We recently replaced both. On helicopters, everything is about hours and maintenance of the aircraft is continuous.” Thompson said that although there is no definitive replacement plan in place, staff has been evaluating its options. “The older the aircraft is, the more expensive it is to maintain,” she said. “We’re looking at whether it makes sense to purchase or lease, things like that.” Trauma Star flights are free for Monroe County residents. Last year, the rule was expanded to include property

owners in the Florida Keys. In 2015, the department also released a sticker that residents and property owners can affix to their driver’s license, signaling authorities they wish to be evacuated by Trauma Star if necessary. LifeNet, the only other life flight services available in the Keys, typically costs more than $50,000 per flight. Even if a patient has medical insurance, it typically does not cover the entire cost. “If there’s a traffic accident, a stroke or a heart attack, Trauma Star is the primary responder,” Thompson said. In instances where Trauma Star is already on a call, or there’s a need for an inter-facility transfer, LifeNet can be called to the scene. Trauma Star stickers are available at local government and fire stations.

Place hands on the floor, slightly wider than shoulder width apart, with fingers pointing forward. Start in the up position with your elbows fully extended, feet no more than 12 inches apart, and your weight supported by your arms and toes. You must keep your back straight at all times and lower your upper body until your upper arm is at least parallel to the floor (elbows bent at a 90 degree angle), then return to the up position with arms fully extended. This is one repetition. Keep your hands and feet on the floor if you need to rest and always rest in the up position (don’t lay on the floor!). Blueberry Smoothie Makes: 4 servings (1 cup each) INGREDIENTS: 2 cups strawberries ½ cup blueberries 1 banana cut in chunks 2 cups fresh spinach ½ cup ice cubes 1 cup fat-free milk ½ cup 100% apple juice or orange juice DIRECTIONS: Combine strawberries, blueberries, banana, spinach, ice cubes, fat-free milk and juice in blender. Blend until smooth.

TIP: Eating regular, portion controlled meals and snacks helps you maintain high energy levels, keeps your metabolism going, and curbs your hunger—which prevents overeating later in the day. Snacks should be thought of as a bridge — they are not intended to fill you up; instead they should help get you from one meal to the next and provide you with energy. The key is timing and portion size. Meals should be small enough to last 2-4 hours. If your meal lasts you longer than that, then you are eating too much at that meal. Snacks should be eaten 1-2 hours before a meal and the portion size should be small enough to satisfy hunger for 1-2 hours. Include snacks that contain protein, fiber or both to slow digestion and make you feel fuller, longer. It is always best to choose “real” foods — vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, meat and meat substitutes. — submitted by registered dietician Dana Hartley, Fishermen’s Community Hospital. POLITICAL FORECAST The Keys Weekly asked Keys’ elected officials for a forecast on the coming year and to reflect on 2015. This week, Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers and Florida Representative Holly Raschein discuss affordable housing, equality and more. Next week: Marathon Mayor Mark Senmartin, Islamorada Mayor Deb Gillis and Key Colony Beach’s Jerry Ellis.

Heather Carruthers, Mayor, Monroe County Commission Elected 2008

W

hat 2015 accomplishments and achievements are you most proud

of? Transmittal of County’s comprehensive plan; reducing millage rate for FY2016; confronting affordable housing crisis; receiving the County’s eligibility letter to re-enter FEMA’s Community Rating System; moving the reauthorization of the NFIP to the forefront of state issues through the Florida Association of Counties; beginning to address the impending impacts of sea level rise and completing our sustainability action plan; simplifying our permitting system and improving our building department. Greatest challenges facing the Florida Keys in 2016? As a non-voting member of the County’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, we are developing strategies to increase the creation of and access to affordable workforce housing. I’m also looking at the possibility of shifting some of our tax burden away from residents to tourists through an additional penny sales tax that would fully fund all fire and rescue service throughout the county and municipalities. That one penny could also generate additional revenues beyond those needs to support and enhance a variety of children’s, senior and health services that are currently funded by government. Page 8 • Marathon Weekly • Jan. 22, 2016

What one single issue, moment made the greatest impact on your current political philosophy in 2015? It was probably the United Way’s report on the true cost of living in Monroe County. It accounts for the actually cost of housing and other services in the Keys. Nationwide, the annual poverty rate for a family of 4 is $23,050. In the Keys, it is $61,962. This, combined with the escalating real estate market and the personal stories of friends who are forced out of the Keys because they can’t afford it, made a huge impact on me.

As an elected official, what kind of advice would you give to the presidential candidates seeking office in 2016? I cannot even begin to imagine the burden that a President bears. My advice would be not to distance oneself from the mundane, daily challenges that most Americans face, to seek common ground and not exacerbate differences, and to keep an open mind and an open heart, and to stay true to our core values of liberty and equality.

Holly Raschein

continue upgrades to our stormwater systems, and provide funding for canal restoration and land acquisition. I am also working to identify funding sources at the state level for affordable housing, as well as develop strategies to affect positive change in this area.

State Representative for Florida House District 120 Elected 2012 What 2015 accomplishments and achievements are you most proud of? In 2015, I was extremely proud of some of some of the tough votes I took. While my actions may not have been popular amongst some of my colleagues in Tallahassee, they were the right thing to do for the people I represent. Greatest challenges facing the Florida Keys in 2016? Some of our biggest challenges in the Florida Keys are related to funding for environmental issues and the serious need for affordable housing in Monroe County. This year, I filed the Florida Keys Stewardship Act which, if passed, would allocated $25 million a year for Monroe County to complete our wastewater projects,

What single issue made the greatest impact on your political philosophy this year? Anti-discrimination issues played a very big role for me this year. Watching the debate surrounding marriage equality only reinforced my commitment to passing statewide anti-discrimination legislation to ensure we are attracting the best and brightest to our state, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

As an elected official, what kind of advice would you give to the presidential candidates seeking office in 2016? Keep it real; be honest and be yourself.

County selects new director for land authority Contributed

T

he Land Authority Governing Board selected Charles Pattison as executive director of the Land Authority during a special meeting Tuesday at the Marathon Government Center. Pattison, who was the county’s first executive director of the Land Authority from 1987 to 1989, will replace Mark Rosch. Rosch, who held the position for 22 years, is stepping down for quality of life reasons. Rosch will continue to work in Land Authority as a senior property acquisition specialist. A review committee selected Pattison, Cynthia Guerra and Charles Barrowclough out of a pool of 34 candidates. After one-on-one interviews and public comment, the Board of County Commissioners voted 4-1 in favor of Pattison, who also has worked on Keys issues at the state’s Department of Community Affairs and at 1000 Friends of Florida. “The three were supremely qualified folks,” Commissioner David Rice said. “It was not an easy selection. But Charles Pattison certainly has a knowledge of working in Tallahassee and working in Monroe County that served him well in the process.” Contract negotiations will begin. If a contract can’t be reached with Pattison, Guerra was named the second choice. The Monroe County Land Authority purchases property in the county for conservation, recreation and affordable housing. The Authority was established in 1986 to assist in the implementation of land use plans as an intermediary between land owners and government agencies that regulate land use.

Seasonal rental licensed First State Bank of the Florida Keys is proud to partner with the Marathon Runners Club as the headline sponsor of the 35th annual 7 Mile Bridge Run. “For 60 years First State Bank of the Florida Keys has been a dedicated member of the Keys community,” said Karen Sharp, First State Bank president and chief executive officer. “It gives our bank a great deal of pride to be a part of this landmark Keys event that brings joy to so many residents and non-residents, while raising funds for the children of our Middle Keys community.” The 7 Mile Bridge Run began as a dedication run in 1982, to celebrate the opening of the “new” bridge. Monies raised are donated to the youth of the Middle Keys, both to local schools and youth athletic groups. Since inception, Middle Keys’ kids have benefited from donations of more than $500,000 distributed by the Marathon Runners Club. The scenic bridge is closed to vehicular traffic throughout the event (from 6:45 to 9 a.m.) while 1,500 people from around the world run across one of the world’s largest segmental bridges, the centerpiece of the Florida Keys 113-mile Overseas Highway. — Contributed

ean Jackson hit an important milestone in late December — her 90th year. Her birthday was celebrated at Sombrero Beach with friends and family from all over the country in attendance. Originally from Birmingham, England, she moved to the U.S. in 1957, brining with her four children. “Like all immigrants, she had to adjust to her country in a big way,” said her daughter Susanne Schnittger. “She didn’t have to make a fire in each room of the house every morning — she had central heat. And she didn’t have to keep the milk bottles in cold water in the bathtub — she had a refrigerator.” Jean and her late husband, Bert, moved to Marathon in 1986. Her husband passed away in 2003. Her daughter said that since then, Jean has been a member of the Cabana Club in Key Colony Beach were she goes every day to swim and read. “She attributes her lifestyle to her longevity, and she is now planning where to hold her 100th Birthday Party,” her daughter said.

Jean Jackson was feted at her 90th birthday party in Marathon by a crowd of family and friends.

bout a year ago a friend asked Chris Lordi (pronounced Lord-eye) to cook up some food for an informal gathering. And the rest, as they say, is rampant business growth via word of mouth about incredible deliciousness. Okay, maybe “they” don’t say that, but it’s true in the case of Irie Island Eats. “We didn’t really plan on it becoming a full blown business,” he said. “He’s always loved to cook,” said Natalie Allen, his fiancée. “But I think Chris was really motivated by the good reviews, and it took on a momentum of it’s own.” Since then, Irie Island Eats has been making the rounds around town — relying on two big grills to cook on site and a commercial kitchen for all the prep. They’ve turned up at local festivals like Marathon’s Craft Beer and Bubbly Fest and Key West’s Fantasy Fest and last week they catered a Marathon Chamber After Hours event at Habitat for Humanity. They have a wedding on the books next month, and this weekend they will be at Grimal Grove’s Chocolate and Wine fest on both Friday night, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan. 23. One of the most special moments of 2015, however, was when Chris was asked to cook the Christmas dinner for the employees of Keys Fisheries. “That was flattering,” Chris said. Keys Fisheries’ Mike Dunkailo said it was an obvious choice. “Chris’ presentation is good, I can’t say enough about the quality of the food, and he

Will work for food: Chris Lordi, left, Natalie Allen, Henry Christian and Mike Lordi man the booth at the Craft Beer and Bubbly Fest. Friends are regularly recruited to help the growing business get on its feet.

knows how to handle a crowd,” Dunkailo said. For a food business that lacks a food truck or a brick and mortar location, that type of exposure is invaluable. Although Irie Island Eats has some tried-andtrue crowd favorites, it’s clear Chris is just hitting his stride. “The rice bowls were pretty popular at the Beer and Bubbly fest,” he said, “but that’s not

something we regularly make.” “And they liked those pork tostadas,” Natalie said, “but we only made those once.” On the other hand, the public refuses to go without the Kalua Pork. The young chef, 33, has a long history in restaurants and said he’s learned that if you explain a word or a method — whether it’s as simple as napkin placement — it has a better chance of sticking in another person’s brain. f you’re serious about homeownership in the near future, getting prepared is crucial. Consider these five tips: • Get your financial house in order: Good credit is key to getting a mortgage at a reasonable interest rate. • Figure out how much you can afford. What do you earn? What do you spend? How much do you have in savings? Answering these questions will help you learn whether you are financially ready for homeownership. Make a budget and use free online tools and calculators to determine reasonable monthly payments and a downpayment. • Explore your mortgage options. Don't assume you don't have enough for a down payment or won't qualify for a mortgage without 20 percent down. In fact, about 40 percent of today’s homebuyers are making down payments that are less than 10 percent. • Get pre-approved for financing. It’s highly recommended that you work with your lender to get pre-approved before you begin house hunting. • Rely on professionals. The typical homebuyer will look at 10 homes over a 10-week period so finding and working with the right team is critical. Housing counselors, realtors and lenders all play an important role. KEY WEST

Florida Keys Reel Adventures Florida Keys Reel Adventures, established in 2011, is a custom charter service that connects visitors and locals to ocean adventures in the Marathon area. Whether a first time visitor to the Keys with the family, or a seasoned hardcore angler, owner Kevin Johnsen specializes in building a trip around specific interests and goals to make a special day on the water. He offers his guests many popular fishing opportunities such as reef fishing, deep wreck, bay, offshore, tarpon, shark and electric deep drop fishing for exotics, spearfishing, and lobster diving. He also offers popular activities for the non-fishing crowd like snorkel trips, shelling, sandbar parties and sunset cruises. “My key to success is understanding my customer’s needs and good communication,” he said. “I have a wealth of local knowledge and am passionate about showcasing the diversity of resources our islands have to enjoy.” His boat is a comfortable 25’ catamaran that features the newest and best electronics, engines and fishing equipment. “I work hard to give my customers every reason to come back and do it again next year,” he said. up with the idea for a food truck rally and Marc Certonio, founder of the Key West Food and Wine Festival, quickly agreed to help. The Key West Food and Wine Festival will be celebrating its seventh year that same weekend Jan. 27-31. Cerotino, who aims to promote Key West as a fine dining festival destination, said the inclusion of food trucks only raises the festival’s Tim Lorber, owner of BabyCakes Food profile. throughout the year to include high season times such as spring break. Adan Morales, owner of Leila’s Latin, located on Smathers Beach, looks forward to the event. From Nicaragua, Adan and his family have been in Key West 20 years and he said he wants to bring his Latin food to locals, not just tourists. “I always had in mind a big event,” Morales said. Tim Lorber, owner of Babycakes, who mostly sells at the artisan markets up and down the Keys, agrees “a more local event would be great.” The food will be a variety of flavors from Mexican, Latin, German, Dutch, Chinese and local favorites. There promises to be something for everyone. Music will highlight the afternoon with some local favorites: Acoustic Fish Out Of Water, 11 to noon; J Sneez, noon to 1 p.m.; Miquel Perez and Ross Brown, 1 to 2 p.m.; and Fish out of Water, 3 to 5 p.m. Plus, local vendors will be selling various craft works. Round out your weekend with the high end flair of the Food and Wine Festival offering such unique events as • Whiskey Bazaar-a Bourbon Bash on Friday, Jan. 29 at Casa Marina Hotel, and • Wayward Vines hosting a wine dinner catered by Great Events on Friday, Jan. 29 at The Marker Hotel. More than 40 events will take place in Key West, including classes on whiskey, rum and even absinthe that promises to be a “spirited event.” The Festival attracts more than 5,000 visitors each year. KEYS DISEASE

This hasn’t been a good year for musicians…

I

was at Jackson Browne’s South Florida stop on his 2016 Solo Acoustic tour this past Wednesday, and as expected, the subject of Glenn Frey came up. A lot of people aren’t aware that Browne co-wrote the Eagles’ classic “Take It Easy” with Frey, dating back to the time early in the 1970s when Glenn lived just downstairs from Jackson in the same apartment building in Southern California. Quite a few years have passed since those early days… and it is now certainly a sad day for us Boomers who grew up with the Eagles’ music as, quite literally, the soundtrack of our lives. Glenn Frey came to Southern California from Detroit, where he grew up with Motown, the Beatles, and his good friend Bob Seger. While working with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner in Linda Ronstadt’s backup band, his idea for the Eagles became reality. While Henley’s voice and lyrics were a huge part of the Eagles’ best songs, it was Frey’s smooth voice, easy-going songs, and talent for arranging those epic harmonies that really made the Eagles what they were. Frey was the undisputed leader of the band, with Henley a close second. Their perfectionism and drive alienated other band members throughout the years, as Leadon, Meisner, and (most famously) Don Felder all left the band (or were fired, in Felder’s case) — all pissed off at Glenn. He did ride the band members hard in his effort to achieve the perfect sound, both in the studio and on stage.

The stress of the Eagles (along with certain other recreational pharmaceuticals) contributed to Glenn’s longtime suffering with gastric illness that eventually contributed to his passing. As he said in a video from the 1970s, “Perfection isn’t easy.” The legacy he left in song really was the soundtrack to a lot of lives. The songs such as “Take It Easy,” “Already Gone,” “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “New Kid in Town,” “Heartache Tonight” — are just as much classics as the ones he co-wrote with Henley, Felder, Browne, J.D. Souther, Jack Tempchin, and others on which he didn’t sing lead. The mellow smooth rock of the Eagles wasn’t popular with everyone… but it certainly touched a lot of lives and was the foundation and inspiration for a lot of beginning guitar players in the 1970s. Because of that legacy, they stayed relevant as a recording and touring act until just last

year, when their two-yearlong History of the Eagles tour ended last summer. I got to see that show in Miami last July, and the concert provided a fitting retrospective of the band’s storied career as well as a good time with really great music. As that evening drew to a close, I was wondering if that was the last time we’d ever see the Eagles on stage… little did I or anyone else know that just a half-year later, we would be mourning the loss of Glenn Frey in a year that hasn’t dawned kind to musicians. Back to this past Wednesday’s Jackson Browne concert – near the end of the show, Browne told the audience that although he wrote “Take It Easy” with Glenn Frey, he didn’t play the song live for many years. He said that concertgoers would comment about the great Jackson Browne show they had just seen, but wondered why he would play an Eagles cover song! He reminisced about

writing the song “Take It Easy,” saying that he hit a wall after he came up with the first verse and the chorus, and that Glenn kept bugging him to finish it so the Eagles could record it for their first album. Glenn asked Jackson to let him finish writing the song, and Jackson first told him no. The next day, Jackson realized that if Glenn did finish the song, it would probably turn

out a lot better, so he changed his mind. Glenn added the parts about that corner in Winslow, Arizona, a girl, a flatbed Ford, and the rest is music history. Along with David Bowie and our own beloved Rocketman, 2016 has not been kind to us musical types. May all of you rest in peace, and thank you for the music and the joy you brought to so many.

ibisicis oil has a lot of uses, but one of Johnna Perkin’s favorites is in the Royal Sunset drink, a specialty, at Sunset Grille’s bar. “I make quite a few of them every night,” said Perkins. “They are unique and different, which draws people to test it out.” The drink is made with Cruzan black cherry rum, unsweetened tea and hibiscus oil. The drink turns a pretty shade of purple after being muddled with lemons, mimicking some of the beautiful sunset colors seen from Sunset Grille’s waterfront location. It is garnished with an edible sweet candied hibiscus flower, which adds to its allure. Perkins hails from a small town in New York called Brocton, and said she loves the fact that she has learned how to make so many tropical drinks after moving to Marathon in October. “I visited on and off and decided to make the move,” she said, adding she wanted to be closer to her father who has lived in the Keys for nine years. When she isn’t working she is relaxing, or spending time at the beach and on the boat. “I love all the people that I work with, they’re great,” she said. “And, nothing can beat watching the sunset here every day I’m working; it makes me happy.” Sunset Grille and Raw Bar is located at the southeast foot of the 7 Mile Brige.

Watch

“The Revenant” (2015) Alejandro G. Inarritu’s “The Revenant” is not for the casual moviegoer, but then again, this is the same guy who wrote and directed “Birdman,” “Babel” and “Biutiful.” Translation: If you’re fatigued by Superhero films and manufactured scripts, you’ll love the cinematic paradox between artistry and brutality in “The Revenant.” The movie follows Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) on a violent fur trading expedition through the uncharted American wilderness in the early 1800’s. And after a brutal bear attack (that you will never forget), witnessing the murder of his son and being left for dead by his own men, Glass sets out on an implausible journey for revenge—and redemption. Currently in local theaters. Showing at Regal Cinema Key West 6

Wear

TAG Heuer Carrera Cara Delevign Do you remember that expensive bracelet or pair of earrings you bought the love of your life for Valentine’s Day a few years back? Probably not. Because odds are she rarely has a chance to wear them in the Florida Keys. This Valentine’s Day splurge on a gift she can wear all year-round with a TAG Heuer watch. We like the Carrera Cara Delevigne. The bezel can be lined with white or black diamonds, a charcoal grey dial, rose gold hands and a diverse leather band. For other great gift ideas check with some of our local jewelers. Jeff’s Gems in Key West. $3,500

Listen

‘Low,’ David Bowie (1977) The world lost one its most iconic musicians in January of 2016. And while there is no singular album that captures David Bowie’s ever-evolving experimentations, many of his disciples argue “Low” (1977) was the record that signified his vanguard into politics, art and style. Much like Hemingway had the ability to describe how an orange tasted, Bowie could make music about how an emotion felt. Ultimateclassicrock.com, who has “Low” as Bowie’s best album, said, “The creative partnership behind the record forged a feeling, a mood, a place. Like very few of the best albums ever recorded.” Digital $9. Available on amazon.com

MHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

ETHAN QUAGLIANO What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am part of the Drama Club and Academic Challenge, and they are both important to be because they both give me the chance to broaden experiences in my life.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS, and why? I think my biggest inspiration at MHS would be Mr. Schubert because he kinda has the same story as me: Midwestern kid who moved to the Keys to better himself. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I would say my English classes have prepared me best for life because of the lessons I have learned in public speaking. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? My parents had me young and they were living in a world that had only began to realize the usefulness of technology. Now my entire world almost revolves around it. What advice would you give to a freshman entering high school? Keep your head up and stick though the next couple of years. It may be hard and boring for you but its gonna help in the long run. What movie character do you most identify with or would most like to be? It may sound ridiculous but I would have to say Optimus Prime from the “Transformers” cartoon because he always sees the good in everything and always keeps cool in the face of danger. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? I would have to say the rate of homeless growth is a pretty big problem and I would start with finding a way to make housing more available and cheap, and also bring more work to the Keys.

If you could advise the President of the United States on one thing, what would it be? If I could advise the President on one thing, it would be that the number of mass shootings in this county is absurd and must be dealt with in some way to ensure the safety of the American people. What are your plans after high school? Attend FKCC for two years and receive an associate’s degree in hospitality then go to a larger university to become a resort manager. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … that life should be just as beautiful as where I live.

CSHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Lazy Days South What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? Football and basketball are very close to my heart because I really enjoy playing these sports. And during the time I have played them in high school I have made a lot of new and good friends. Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why? Austin Seabolt is my biggest inspiration because he is a very kind and good-hearted person. He’s also one of the best football players I know. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Mrs. Andersen’s Algebra class prepares me because we don’t just do math, we also talk about the real world and how important math is. Do you tweet? Who do you follow on Twitter? I use my Twitter sometimes and just follow my friends and family. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Well in my life there’s not really any challenges. As soon as I go over the bridge I feel at home. What are your plans after high school? I want to get a sports scholarship at a good school and then get my medical degrees to become a veterinarian.

Keep smiling... it makes people wonder what you’re up to. Cheryl Troxel, former wife, & Rita Troxel, current wife ...best friends

“We both married Fred for the usual reasons, but soon discovered just how brilliantly talented he is. He put these smiles on both our faces. How he created them... well, that’s our little secret”.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Yes, but I will try living in different parts of the country first to see if I find a passion for anywhere else. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … a lot about the water and just how beautiful living on an island can really be.
