LOCAL CHATTER The 50th annual Super Bowl starts at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7. While the football face-off between Cam Newton and Peyton Manning is sure to entertain, many don’t risk a trip to the loo for fear of missing one of the fantastic commercials. Remember the one with Larry Bird and Michael Jordan? Or how about those Budweiser commercials with the frogs? This week, we asked …
What’s your favorite Super Bowl commercial? “You’ll see why 1984 won’t be like ‘1984’” is the tagline of Ben Daniel’s favorite Super Bowl commercial. “They have a bunch of people dressed in gray staring at a big screen, and a woman runs in and throws a hammer through it,” Daniels said. “It’s not a funny commercial, but it made an impact.” Apple was making a statement about “big brother” IBM on the eve of the personal Mac.
Marathon Fire Chief John Johnson’s favorite advertisement has to do with Dalmatians and a fire department, of course. The two dogs are separated at birth. “The one that gets adopted by the fire department blows a raspberry at the one that’s not picked. The next time he sees the other dog he’s going by sitting on top of the Clydesdale wagon and that one sticks its tongue out,” said Johnson, chuckling.
Bill Kelly likes the “Mean Joe Green” commercial. First aired in 1979, it shows the Pittsburg Steeler football player limping off the field when he’s stopped by a kid who offers him a Coca Cola. “Then he throws the kid his Jersey. That was a great commercial,” said Marathon’s Vice Mayor.
In the 2015 Budweiser Super Bowl commercial, Clydesdale horses save a lost puppy from a wolf. That’s a favorite of Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey. Awwww.
Josh Mothner doesn’t hesitate. “The Darth Vader one with the little kid,” said the Marathon Realtor. “That’s the best one of all time.” The commercial shows a little kid trying out his powers on various household objects, then with the help of his father and the Volkswagen remote start, is amazed to see the car turn on.

arathon’s new city manager is tasked with planning for the future. “We need to anticipate potential challenges,” said Chuck Lindsey. “As we see continued development growth and the potential for fire and EMS calls to increase, we would be silly not to identify that situation early.” That could — underline could — mean another fire station on the west end of Marathon. “This is us merely being proactive,” Lindsey said, adding that there is no concrete plan to build another substation. Over the last year, the Marathon Fire Department responded to 2,347 calls for service. In his last report to the Marathon City Council, Chief John Johnson wrote, “”As you can see in my reports on overlapping calls there are several times when all of our units are providing service to the citizens and visitors of our city.”
Marathon Cinema NOW SHOWING

According to the report, there were 26 occasions in December when calls overlapped — meaning two units were on the road and only one left to respond. On six occasions, all three were in use meaning that if another call came in, there would be no city personnel to respond and the county fire department would be called in. In addition, Marathon Fire Rescue assisted the county on four occasions in December when all of the nearby county vehicles were on call. Currently, Marathon’s Fire Rescue department has 24 shift positions and four administrative positions — making it the largest department in the city, but not the most expensive. One reason, is that the department brings in revenue: $525,000 for service provided to Key Colony Beach, $517,000 in payments for emergency and inter-facility transportation, and almost $18,000 for building and vacation rental inspections. “What it really comes down to is standard of care for our residents and visitors to the city,” Johnson said, “while being fiscally responsible with our taxpayers’ money.” Marathon currently has the main station next to the airport, and a recently constructed (2013) substation on Grassy Key.

Mindy Conn announces candidacy By Jason Koler Sugarloaf Key resident Mindy Conn is running for the Monroe County School Board, District III seat. She will face incumbent “Capt. Ed” Davidson on the Primary ballot in August. “I feel like I can affect more change,” she said, citing her time as a classroom volunteer and numerous committee and board assignments. Conn sees the need to increase scholastic achievement rates in the lower achieving student population, bolster community partnerships through on-the-job training programs, balance the curriculum for younger students, and bring a higher level of accountability at the district level. She is a strong proponent of public school systems and admits she has had “incredible experiences with the teachers and administration.” Her resume includes numerous schoolrelated boards and organizations since her kids entered the Monroe County school system more than 10 years ago. Her daughter Emily is a junior at Key West High School and her son Josh is an eighth grader at Sugarloaf Elementary. Over the years Conn has fundraised as a “Class Mom” for the Student Advisory Committee, tutored, served on the Strategic Planning Committee, the Superintendent Hiring Committee and the School District Advisory Committee. She was also a Take Stock mentor and is now the organization’s student success coach. Conn has also been a substitute teacher since 2007. “I have had such incredible experiences with the teachers and administration,” Conn said. “ Originally from New York, Conn attended public schools before earning her bachelors degree from George Washington University. She then graduated from St. John’s School of Law and practiced law privately and as an Assistant New York State Attorney. She and her husband, Abe, moved to the Keys in 2001.

NEIGHBOR OF THE WEEK
Johnson is proud to serve Editor’s Note: Sue Redding wrote the following piece about Vernon “Skip” Johnson, a World War II veteran and her mentor in the Coast Guard Auxiliary program. He and his wife, Gloria, are residents of Summerland Key and members of the Marathon Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 13-2 for the past 14 years. The snowbirds are also members of auxiliary flotillas up north.

ernon “Skip” Johnson’s story starts back in Cape Cod during World War II where he enlisted in the Coast Guard at the age of 17. His roots link back to the sea where his father and grandfather spent a lifetime on the ocean. His grandfather was an old time whaler so when the time arose for Skip to step forward, there was no hesitation as it was part of his proud heritage. The year was 1942 the war was in full swing with the country worried about an uncertain future. “I was sent to boot camp in Manhattan Beach, New York and signed up for a special group to work with a new thing the guard was trying, sonar. We were the first group to start working with this new technology and I was assigned to the Nourmahal,” he said. This patrol gunboat was a 300-ton ship 263 feet in length; it belonged to a billionaire in New York who donated it to the Coast Guard. After tearing it apart, the ship was fully converted to a gunboat including two “moose traps” — the first rockets to be used in the war. The ship, commissioned in 1943, quickly became known as the Flagship for the Eastern Sea Frontier as a sub chaser, although her top speed was only 15 knots. “I was the sonar operator and we dropped depth charges on several missions along the eastern coast,” Johnson said. “We were never told where we would be going but we were the last line of defense along the North Atlantic.”
Page 7 • Marathon Weekly • Feb. 5, 2016
Sue Redding, right, said she is inspired by Skip Johnson’s service to his country.
Johnson said they were called “ping jockeys,” as they listened for the sound of the sonar bounce back off a large medal object.

“We could calculate the size, location and speed of the sub by taking several sonar reading in five-degree increments. These projections were the basis for launching the depth charges,” he said. Many people were never aware that the German Submarines were operating just off the U.S. coast. On one mission, Johnson and the crew detected an enemy sub, did the calculations and dropped some depth charges.

surface. We never confirmed sinking that sub as they often played decoys in hopes we would move on,” he said. Skip would have other assignments during his enlistment. One of the last was training on the operation of the Higgins Boats in preparation for a major invasion in Europe. “I was fortunate that at as my final training was completed the war ended in 1945 and I didn’t get
deployed to the D-Day invasion. We lost so many good men.” Fourteen years ago, Johnson and his wife, Gloria, retired to the Florida Keys. “We decided it was time to give back and we joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary. We have made many friends and still feel that pride of serving our country as a volunteer,” he said.
Now recruiting! Today the Coast Guard Auxiliary is lending helping hands as a uniformed volunteer component of the Coast Guard and the largest volunteer organization in the U.S. There are many opportunities for service — safety patrols on local waterways, assisting the Coast Guard in Homeland Security duties, teach boating safety classes at the elementary, high school and adult level, conduct free vessel safety checks for the public, as well as many other activities. Other activities include the Auxiliary chef program (where volunteers cook in the galley for the Coasties), and marine environmental protection program (marine pollution). Beach and highway clean ups are scheduled for the fall. “As an Auxiliarist, you can help the general public become safer on the water and reduce accidents and help save lives,” said Sue Redding. “It provides fun and fellowship and is a great way to help your country as well as the general public.” For more information, visit USCGAUXDIVISION13@gmail.com.

Foundation’s wall under construction Sheila Cook dreams up 3D to honor hospital’s benefactors By Sara Matthis

hat appears to be a simple mural in the making, is actually much more. Fishermen’s Community Hospital lobby will be transformed with a three-dimensional art piece that not only pays homage to the environment, but also the many supporters of the medical center. For weeks, The Art Studio owner Sheila Cook and her team have been laboring on the east wall of the lobby — dreaming and measuring and beginning to sketch and paint an underwater scene. “We’ve been planning it for about a year with the Fishermen’s Foundation,” Cook said. “Kim Gregory and Marv Schindler approached us about the idea of a donor wall. It will recognize everybody who has contributed to this hospital, including the employees.” Cook said her imagination took off almost immediately. Besides the painted mural, it will also include clay starfish and seashells that are fired and painted. It will also feature fused-glass fish and a reef sculpture made from found objects that will also be painted to resemble a coral head. Besides Cook, it will include the work of her husband, Steve, Lynn Loftus, Jessie Vandervoort and Ashley Evenrud. Page 9 • Marathon Weekly • Feb. 5, 2016
“We wanted something unique — not the standard wall with brass plaques that tarnish in the Keys,” said Gregory, executive director of the Foundation. “I knew it was going to be special, but I think it’s going to far better than I even dreamed.” It’s the perfect project for a woman who has always had an artistic instinct. “I think I’ve been painting all my life,” Cook said, “as well as doing other things like making Barbie clothes for my dolls with scraps of fabric my grandmother gave me.” In fact, she started college with the intention of becoming a potter. But then the theater bug bit. She received a full scholarship to study theater Sweetheart Ball is this weekend The Fishermen’s Hospital Foundation is throwing a big party this weekend — the 56th annual Sweetheart Ball. It’s set for Saturday, Feb. 6 at a private hangar at the Marathon airport. About 300 guests are readying for the affair that includes a catered dinner, live entertainment, auction of five big-ticket items, and an interactive fundraiser. “We are looking for the community’s help to raise approximately $250,000 for new cardiac monitors for the hospital,” said Kim Gregory, the foundation’s executive director.
at Fontbonne University in Missouri after being spotted in a local production. Following graduation, she joined a prestigious theater group working in the children’s theater division. Then she served on the Humanities Council in Missouri and Illinois, creating traveling performances about historical figures. “They were huge tent shows,” she said. “Steve, my husband, was our technical director.” The couple moved to the Keys about a dozen years ago, settling in Marathon. She said that’s when she switched art mediums, back to creating things with her hands. “I was painting and doing embroidery and reading. Then I started making art box handbags out of cigar boxes,” Cook said. That led to jewelry and constant trips to the mainland for supplies to fuel her art habit. She knew she wasn’t alone, so the idea of the Art Studio was born. Besides the Fishermen’s Community Hospital, Cook’s murals grace several locations around town including Leigh Anne’s Coffee House, and the Jet Center. Plus, she has murals in Indiana, Illinois and even other countries — painted on mission trips, she said. But the wall she’s working on now, that’s the most complex project she’s ever undertaken. “It will take the whole team to make this work, but it’s going to be amazing,” she said.

small reception was held on Key Colony Beach last week, when KCB Commissioner Geraldine Zahn resigned from office effective January 28, 2016. “Leaving is a mixed bag so to speak,” she told the Weekly. “It’s been a pleasure to serve (the residents of Key Colony Beach).” She cited improvements to the city’s wastewater system and the interlocal agreement with Marathon for fire and EMS services as highlights of her time on the dais, but said she is most proud of “giving our citizens everything they need and deserve while maintaining a fair tax base.” Her seat will be filled by longtime Key Colony Beach businesswoman April Tracy whose family purchased the Cabana Club in 1979. “I just love Key Colony Beach,” said Tracy. “I feel like I have something to contribute and am looking forward to the challenges of keeping Key Colony Beach one of the greatest little cities in America.” Key Colony Beach was scheduled to hold an election this March to fill both Zahn and Tucker DeGraw’s seats. However since only John DeNeale filed to run, both he and Tracy will serve two- year terms. They join Mayor Jerry Ellis and commissioners Jim Pettorini and Ron Sutton on the dais.

Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders.
Diet experts always talk about “lifestyle change.” In fact, it’s so overused, it’s kind of lost its meaning. Here’s a better term: change you can live with. Can I live without sugar in my coffee? I didn’t think so, but it turns out I can, and have, for more than a year. I still add cream to my coffee, but there may be a time when I can live without that too. I am also beginning to understand the benefits of protein without the fat. I used to use my protein intake as an excuse to ignore the fat in sausage or cheese. It turns out, I am becoming a big devotee of elk meat. (Seriously delicious.) The change that you can live with carries over; it doesn’t end after 16 weeks. The Marathon Meltdown is a journey, not a destination, and the goal is to pick up as many long-term tools as possible. — Sara Matthis Page 16 • Upper Keys Weekly • Feb. 5, 2016

strength & Conditioning
LUNGES Keep your upper body straight, with your shoulders back and relaxed and chin up (pick a point to stare at in front of you so you don't keep looking down). Always engage your core. Step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle. Make sure your front knee is directly above your ankle, not pushed out too far, and make sure your other knee doesn't touch the floor. Keep the weight in your heels as you push back up to the starting position.

eld as a fundraiser for the tiny historic island called Pigeon Key in the tropical Florida Keys, the two-day juried Pigeon Key Art Festival attracts exemplary artists and quality buyers from across the globe. The event takes place Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6-7 at the Marathon Community Park, MM49, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Seventy fine artists and craftsmen, delicious regional cuisine and live art and auction by preeminent celebrity marine life artist, Wyland, are all planned. New this year will be historical elements, art activities and educational programming highlighting the Pigeon Key Foundation’s important projects. The festival has invited some area research organizations to create a showcase of the important eco-tourism organizations that dominate the Middle Keys. At the festival guests will find exhibits and displays, touch tanks, hands-on activities and even a puppet show that bring marine and wildlife education to life. Historical preservation ois important to The Pigeon Key Foundation’s mission. On Saturday reenactors from the Key West Ship Wreck Museum will be on hand telling stories. Larry Herlth, artist and sculptor (also known as “Lighthouse Larry”) will educate guests on lighthouses in the Keys. Two-day entry is $7 per person for adults and free for children under 12 and all fees stay local to help the Pigeon Key Foundation.

Reading has gone to the dogs Izaiah Morales, a seventh grade student at Marathon Middle High School, enjoys reading aloud to pet-pal Jasmine, a pit bull trained to interact calmly in a variety of situations. Morales and Jasmine participated in the school Library Learning Commons reading event, Reading has Gone to the [Service] Dogs, recently as part of Florida’s Celebrate Literacy program. The school event aims to pair student readers with a dog specifically trained to offer comfort and, hopefully, for the students to associate reading as a pleasurable pastime, explained Kathy Lancaster, library information services director. Offered each period over the course of a school day, the program served a total of 100 students with eight dogs and their handlers. Jasmine is certified with Dog Therapy International.

anessa Seaverns from Cape May, New Jersey moved to the Keys in 2008 to escape the weather and enjoy the water. She's been slinging drinks at Sparky's Landing in Key Colony Beach for two days, but has been working at the waterfront restaurant for two months. She said in her short time behind the bar that the Pineapple Crusher is a favorite for the bar patrons. Made with Jose Cuervo 1800 Coconut, a flavored tequila, and pineapple juice — because tequila is a big seller. "It's a good switch up from a piña colada," she said, which she's already mastered along with the cocorita in her short time behind the bar. Sparky's is celebrating its 10-year anniversary Monday. "There are locals and tourists all sitting together and getting along in one spot," she said about why she loves working there. "Not to mention the great food and great service." When she isn't working, she's snorkeling at her favorite spot: Sombrero Reef. She said the cocktails go best with happy hour peel-and-eats and the dinner entrée of coconut shrimp. Sparky’s Landing is located on the Sadowski Causeway leading to Key Colony Beach.

KEYS DISEASE
Crazy Laws in America, Part 1 The Keys Disease Guide on how not to get in trouble in the 50 states
A
s I said last week, my good UK friend Mac has come to the rescue yet again! This week, being concerned about his friends across the pond, he sent along a list of actual laws in the United States so that wherever in this great land we traveled, we would have a better chance of not landing in jail. And let me tell you, these are some crazy laws that are actually on the books in all 50 states! Alabama: It is illegal to wear a fake moustache that causes laughter in church. Alaska: It is illegal to wake a sleeping bear to take a photo. Arizona: It is illegal for donkeys to sleep in bathtubs. Arkansas: It is illegal to mispronounce “Arkansas.” California: A frog that dies during a frog-jumping contest cannot legally be eaten. Colorado: It is illegal to ride a horse while under the influence. Connecticut: A pickle cannot legally be considered a pickle unless it bounces. Delaware: R-rated movies cannot be shown in drive-in theaters. Florida: If an elephant is left tied to a parking meter, the parking fee has to be paid just as if it would for a vehicle. Georgia: It is illegal to keep
an ice cream cone in your back pocket on Sundays. Hawaii: Coins are not allowed to be placed in one’s ears. Idaho: It is illegal to give your sweetheart a box of chocolates that weighs more than 50 pounds. Illinois: It is legal for a minor to drink as long as he or she is enrolled in a culinary program. Indiana: Moustaches are illegal if the wearer has a tendency to habitually kiss other people. Iowa: One-armed piano players must, by law, perform for free. Kansas: A poorly worded law states that if two trains meet on the same track, neither shall proceed until the other has passed. Louisiana: You can be fined $500 for sending a pizza order to someone’s house without his or her knowledge.
Kentucky: One may not dye a duckling blue and offer it for sale unless more than six are for sale at once. Maryland: It is a $10 violation to be in a public park wearing a sleeveless shirt. Maine: It is illegal to keep Christmas decorations up after January 14. Massachusetts: It is illegal to own an explosive golf ball. Michigan: It is illegal for women to cut their own hair without their husband’s permission. Minnesota: A person may not cross state lines with a duck
upon his head. Mississippi: One may be fined up to $100 for using profane language in public places. Missouri: It is illegal to drive with an uncaged bear. Montana: Guiding sheep onto the track with the intent to injure the train is subject to a fine of up to $50,000 and serving up to five years in prison. Aren’t you glad to know that you can avoid fines and
jail time by not selling fewer than six dyed blue ducklings while driving your camel on the highway and wearing a duck on your head as you cross the state line? Although the rebel in me wants nothing more than to go to New Hampshire and collect some seaweed at night… or leave my elephant tied to a Miami parking meter without paying the fine. See you next week (if I haven’t been arrested on a New Hampshire beach).
In Hawaii, coins are not allowed to be placed in one’s ears.

Author talks about Florida’s evolution Contributed
H
ow the image of Florida evolved starting in the 20th century is the topic of a new book “For Sale: American Paradise,” by Willie Drye. He is presenting and signing his book as part of the Keys History & Discovery Center lecture series. The presentation is the evening of Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada. The center opens at 5 p.m. and the presentation begins at 6 p.m., with booksigning to follow. Come hear the story of how Florida became entwined with Americans’ 20th-century hopes, dreams and expectations, and how it was the site of mass delusion, real estate collapses, and catastrophic hurricanes. “For Sale – American Paradise: How
Our Nation was Sold an Impossible Dream in Florida,” focuses on the experiences of William Jennings Bryan and Edwin Menninger, who were among the people who shaped the image of Florida that we know today and who sold that image as America's paradise. The book also is a tale of the euphoria and mass delusion that inevitably happens when times are good and people convince themselves that they’ve found a foolproof way to have it all, have it now, and keep it forever. It’s the colorful, tragicomic story of how Florida became one of the world’s most appealing places. Drye, whose first book, “Storm of the Century: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935,” was made into a documentary for the History Channel, will share how he became interested in
writing about the land boom and share anecdotes from his research and writing. Cost for non-Discovery Center members is $25 and includes admission to the exhibit as well as light appetizers. A cash bar will be available. Reservations are recommended and can be made at 305-922-2237 or info@keysdiscovery.com. The Discovery Center is in Islamorada, MM 82, located at the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost. The Center is open Thursdays through Sundays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. General admission is $12. Admission for seniors is $10 and children 13-under are free. Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation is a 501(c) (3), not-for-profit organization operating the Keys History & Discovery Center. For more information, call 305-922-2237 or go to www.keysdiscovery.com.
Stewardship Bill closer to passage Contributed
T
he Florida Keys Environmental Stewardship Bill – designed to protect and preserve the island chain and ensure it continues to be an economic driver for the state – is one step closer to passage. The Florida House budget subcommittee this week included $25 million to fully fund the bill in its budget vrecommendations. “The funding is not included

on the Senate side, but this is an expected part of the roughand-tumble, give-and-take of the typically challenging budget negotiation process between the two legislative chambers,” said Lisa Tennyson, Monroe County’s Director of Legislative Affairs. Full appropriations committees should approve their budgets this week, with House and Senate preliminary budget recommendations on the floor Feb. 10 -11. Final budget deci-
sions will be made in budget conference during the last week of session. Sen. Wilton Simpson (RTrilby) and Rep. Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo) introduced the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, Senate Bill 770 and House Bill 447, respectively. They believe that making investments now is vital to ensuring that the Florida Keys continue to thrive for years to come, and that its environment is preserved for future generations of Floridians.
