LOCAL CHATTER By Hays Blinckmann Every four years we are gifted by the calendar gods with an extra day, February 29th. Leap year was implemented in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical year. But for us mortals it can be a chance to reset our own circadian rhythm, switch back to neutral, and in this busy time of season, dream of just one, free day to ourselves. So we asked …

Everyone wants to know where the locals eat… VOTED BEST PIZZA, BEST LUNCH, BEST FISH SANDWICH & BEST FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS

What are you going to do with your extra day on the leap year? Suzie Orchard, owner of Key West Island Bookstore, dreams of being underwater. “A day of snorkeling and diving and then a reading my favorite book on the boat would be ideal. In fact, if they made under underwater books, then I would never come up.”

Stephanie Mitchell, of Key West Seaplane Adventures, is moving on March 1st.” Thank God, I have an extra day to pack. Never move after the shortest month of the year.”

Jamie Martinez would do it all. “I would be on a cruise with my family from Nicaragua and Guatemala,” Martinez said. “We would have the biggest all-day party of the year.”

And speaking for all women, and some men too, “ I just want time to clean my house and get a mani/ pedi,” said Marjorie Calderone.

ore than 75 ambassadors from Monroe County invaded Tallahassee this week for “Florida Keys Day” at the state capital. The one-day session, which began in 2009 under the direction of State Representative Holly Raschein, has provided a vital platform for local delegates to interact with some of the state’s top officials—while lobbying for support on an array of issues such as environmental, economic and education items. Wednesday marked the eighth opportunity for Monroe County officials and leaders to embark on Florida Keys Day, which Raschein originally conceived while serving as a legislative aide before being elected to the State House of Representatives in 2012. The day not only provides a symbolic voice of unity from representatives throughout the Keys, it also grants attendees the unique opportunity to meet with key decision makers throughout the capitol building. “I think Wednesday was the

most successful Florida Keys Day on record,” said Raschein. “Particularly when you consider the community turnout and the agenda we had in place. When you look at the folks we

met with and advocated with— there is just no substitute for our local community learning from and offering input with so many different agencies.” On Tuesday evening Florida

Keys delegates were treated to a private reception with State Rep. Holly Raschein. And Wednesday’s engagements with state leaders allowed participants to engage with figures such as Attorney General Pam Bondi, Senator Anitere Flores and Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam. But one of Wednesday’s most exciting moments occurred on the House Floor when Florida Keys Community College President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, accompanied by more than 20 FKCC students and staff, witnessed government in action. The local contingent witnessed Raschein move forward House Bill 341, which will pave the way for additional dorms at the college. Also, Senator Flores presented Raschein’s “Florida Keys Stewardship Act” to the Senate floor. The historic bill was originally sponsored by Rep. Raschein in the House and potentially serves as one of the most significant steps to preserve and protect Monroe County’s water quality and wastewater infrastructure. And while a vote on the bill was postponed in the State Senate, the measure was another step forward for the Florida Keys. “In terms of the process, timing and relationships — all of those were in play on Wednesday,” said Raschein. “We had the Stewardship Act being proposed on the Senate floor and

Also known as the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, SB 770 will invest $25 million each year for 10 years into water quality, restoration and protection; water supply protection; and land for critical habitat protection, public safety in case of an evacuation, property rights and military base protection. The companion bill, House Bill 447, which is sponsored by Representative Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo), is slated to be heard in the House State Affairs Committee. “It is truly an honor to commend the members of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government for their vote of confidence on Senate Bill 770 on Florida Keys Day at the Florida Capitol,” said Mayor Heather Carruthers of Monroe County. “The Florida Keys has so much to offer, both in terms of economic and natural resources, and we are glad that both chambers of the Florida Legislature continue to advance this vital legislation to protect and preserve the Florida Keys.” “A sincere thank you is due to the Senators who serve on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government, who today took an important step toward investing in the future of the Florida Keys and the State of Florida,” said Mayor Craig Cates of the City of Key West. “The Florida Keys have been an economic driver for the local communities and the entire State of Florida for a long time. By making an investment through the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, the Keys can continue to be a significant economic contributor for years to come.”

Following Wednesdays’ session, a Keys-styled social outside of the capital building came fully equipped with frozen Key lime pie on a stick, rum punch and

tasty portions of conch chowder. “Everyone’s favorite happy hour, every year, is the Florida Keys Day reception in the courtyard,” said Raschein. “It was a smashing success and I’ve gotten nothing but amazing feedback from my colleagues and staff alike” For more pictures from the 2016 Florida Keys Day visit: www.keysweekly.com

howing off her “guns” to the students of Tavernier’s Montessori School, Teresa Diehl tells the assembled kids that her arms have not only been propelling her throughout the Keys during recent training for a Cuba to Key West kayak trip, but also preparing to circumnavigate Australia. Her breaks from training have a very specific purpose: to help children find their own personal goals and pursue them. “I created a goal and have to figure out how to accomplish it,” she told the children. Diehl first picked up a kayak paddle four years ago while in Australia, studying for her Ph.D in Education. “I was walking the beach, when I met a man in an open canoe who was finishing a Darwin to Cairns trip (1,287 nautical miles) and heading to Sydney. I ran back to my house grabbed a notebook, tea, and biscuits and chatted with him for three hours.” Diehl set a goal that day that she would learn to paddle and would one day kayak around Australia. A former Realtor and teacher, she said she returned home to the States and was reading up on the Cuba-Key West relations and thought the paddle would be a good practice run. While on her quest, she stops at schools to speak to students about goal setting. “The class creates a goal, and then brainstorms ways to accomplish it,” she said at recent stop to her

training in the Lower Keys. Diehl said she once had a 10-year-old tell her that he wanted to develop gills so he could breathe underwater. The class laughed, but she compared his goal to the Wright brothers’ goal of wanting to fly. The whole class then brainstormed ideas on how to make it possible. “I’m trying to spark goals for them to reach for after high school,” she said, comparing young student’s minds to little sponges. “It’s an absolute privilege to go to these classes and talk with these students.” Her next goal is to speak to students in Cuba. Which is why she has been paddling back and forth from Miami to Key West since January in all conditions in preparation for the crossing. On one day Diehl travels from Key West to Little Torch, for example, bringing all the necessaries in her 18-foot kayak to make camp overnight. Diehl lives self-contained out of the boat while she’s training, but said she’s inching toward her goals with the help of kind people she meets along the way. Such as strangers who have let her pitch a bedroll on their beachfront property, and friends who have let her shower and feed her a warm meal or take her to the grocery store. “I come across people like this all of the time,” she said. “The best part of this entire journey is the people and kids I get to meet.” Diehl has already received the clearance from both governments, and is squaring away her crew and fine-tuning her equipment for the Cuba to Key West trip. “Although Cuban migrants make the crossing in small

vessels all the time, no one has actually kayaked it officially,” she said. She said she’s inspired by Diana Nyad’s historic Cuba to Key West swim in 2013 and has actually been in contact with the swimmer. Diehl said she has had help with weather mapping from some of Nyad’s Key West support crew. In the thousands of miles she’s put under her kayak, she said her favorite time to be in her boat is when it’s raining. “It smooths the surface and I can travel almost silently,” she said. unnies? Bun-nies! Bunnies. No matter how you say the word, you can’t say it angrily. Nothing invokes cuteness or softness more than the marshmallow of animals, the rabbit. And when face-toface with their almond eyes and fuzzy innocence, the urge to have one is hard to resist. As a nation, we are falling into a bunny hypnosis, walking into pet stores for a dog collar and walking out with new family members. And that’s what people don’t realize, bunnies aren’t just pets, they are family and need just as much attention and care as dogs or cats. Rabbits constitute one third of surrendered animals to shelters. In order to tackle and educate about this nationwide problem, Cathy Baier, a 17-year veteran of Florida Keys SPCA and owner of three house rabbits, is bringing Bunfest to Key West. It’s set for Sunday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Old Armory on White Street in Key West. The FKSPCA has seen a rise in its bunny population to an all time high of 26. (Also a subsequent rise in hamsters, given their availability at pet stores.) Baier said she thinks the public’s perception of bunnies is skewed. “For example, they live up to ten years, that’s a long commitment,” she said. Bunfest’s goal is to educate families on the needs of bunnies. Since they are domesticated — not to be mistaken for Marsh rabbits — bunnies should live indoors with some outdoor play time. They need to roam and not be caged regularly as they are very social and prefer to be with humans and

other rabbits. Bunnies are sensitive to heat and often fall prey to illness, so a close relationship with its owner is optimal. And if you are really ready for the challenge and rewarding love of Thumper, then consider adoption. Cathy stresses, “For the cost of adoption, the animal is spayed or neutered already. We provide support for behavioral and health issues and guidance with nutrition. You will not get that attention or support from a

pet store.” Bunfest will offer a variety of services for already owned rabbits: educational booths, a veterinarian from the Marathon Veterinary Hospital answering questions, a bunny spa with grooming and nail services and bunny glamour shots by FKSPCA’s Edie Kehoe. The Crazy Cavies from Fort Lauderdale will also be at the event with guinea pigs and educational materials on caring for them. This is a very kid friendly event with face painting by Flamingo Cafe, a kids craft table and a bake sale. And no event of this kind would be complete without Jeanne Selander from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm with Mo the Sloth. Bunfest is on Saturday, Feb. 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Armory, 600 White St., Key West. For more details, call Tiffany at 305-294-4857 or email tiffany@ fkspca.org.

here aren’t many who would be thankful for breaking a bone and being laid up for several weeks. However, for Key West musician Chad Burtch, breaking his leg in a football game his senior year in high school year allowed him the time to learn the guitar and helped pave the way to what has become a very successful musical career here on the island. Born in upstate New York, Chad attended Siena College where he majored in international business and minored in German. It was there he began playing live on a consistent basis and he soon began performing extensively in New York City and the rest of the East Coast. Chad spent his summers on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket working as a bartender, a personal chef and as a musician — he’s clearly a jack-of-all trades kind of guy.

Upon visiting Key West in 2009 with his fiancée Casey (now his wife), the couple decided they were hooked and made the move down a mere seven months later in October of 2009. It was a very easy transition. "I fell in love with this place immediately,” said Chad. “The music scene and folks that are part of it, is awesome. It’s

everywhere from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m." Today, Chad splits his time as both Realtor for Island and Resort Realty and as a steady musician. He can be found playing all over town at places like The Gates, Conch Republic Seafood Company and poolside at the Southernmost Hotel. Chad also plays many of the weddings that roll into town and just recently performed as a guest on the latest Sunday Ramble which he said was quite the experience. Moving forward, Chad is looking to begin work on his first full-length album in the coming weeks. Chad recorded three of his songs for a television series on VH-1 a few years ago and is incredibly excited about getting back into the studio. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Psychology with Mr. Kremer has best prepared me for life after high school. It taught me profiling without the instinctual prejudices of today’s society. The class also helped me further understand the personalities of individuals to create better relationships. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? I find that there is sometimes too much trash on our beautiful beaches, and this not only hurts locals, but the tourists as well who are our main source of income. To fight back, I would organize beach cleanups to restore the beauty. What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend a four-year college/university. I like to dream big, so I am hoping for something out-of-state. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? The Keys will be a place that I will continue to visit in the future, but I don’t plan on making it my personal home. I want to live outside of my comfort-zone, and that means leaving paradise. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … no matter where you go, you will always find a friendly face and plenty of fishing gear.

ohn Wells, Tom Murtha, and Paul Cotton almost met way back in the 1970s. It was in the Baltimore Civic Center, where Wells and Murtha were part of the opening act for Cotton’s headliner, the seminal California country rock band, Poco, which rose from the ashes of Buffalo Springfield and provided the DNA for bands like the Eagles. But as is usually the case with big-time concerts, the openers didn’t mix with the headliners. Flash forward several decades to a couple of years ago, when Wells unexpectedly ran into Cotton at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West and reminded him of that gig in Baltimore. The two guitarists started reminiscing and talking music, and the next thing you know, they’re calling bassist Murtha, drummer Gary McDonald, and harmonica virtuoso George Halloran to get together just to jam and make some music. And that’s usually how the great groups happen. This one became one of Key West’s most popular amalgams, the Made In Key West Band — also lovingly known as the Conchs and Cowboys — who will be Back In The Saddle Again when they return to the Red Barn Theatre for six rousing nights of great tunes and stories, which they call “Tales of Old Key West.” Shows are scheduled for Sundays and Mondays, February 21-22, 28-29, and March 6-7. The first

notes will ring out at 8 p.m. each night. “Paul Cotton had not really done a lot of this kind of thing – a musical concert in a theatrical setting,“ Wells said. “He was used to the arenas or small music clubs like the Troubador. But it sounded so good, he was willing to give it a try.” Both Cotton and the audiences loved the experience. Last year’s shows at the Red Barn were complete sellouts, with everyone thoroughly enjoying the eclectic mix of songs and stories. Wells anticipates this year’s shows will have the same result.

weave the stories of the songs into the show. “It’s not just a band playing music,” he said. “It’s a whole experience. It’s really improvisational and in the moment, so each night’s show will be a little different. I’ve never done anything like it. It really just flies.” If you caught last year’s shows, expect to hear some of the favorites the audience let the band know they liked best. But Wells, Cotton, and crew also have several new things in their saddlebags for this year’s shows. “The thing I’m most appreciative of are the people who say they really like the songs and stories we do,” Wells said. “We have a lot of fun.”

It’s not just a band playing music, it’s a whole experience. It’s really improvisational and in the moment, so each night’s show will be a little different. “We do vocals you don’t hear very often,” Wells said, “and songs that we love. Some have Key West associations, some are arrangements that I heard that are so different from what you normally hear. And we do a few of Paul’s Poco tunes too.” The intriguing part of a Conchs and Cowboys show is the theatricality of it, Wells said, which comes from the way they

rican’ Rican, Duchess of Pain, Fire brawl, Salma Havoc. No, these aren’t names for tourist cocktails or monster trucks, these are the women of the Flat Track Roller Derby team in Key West, affectionately known as the Derby Dames. These women are “trill” (consult Urban Dictionary). They are wives, mothers, and professionals in the community but they skate like Martha Stewart on steroids. Less than three-years-old, the Derby Dames came about when Lacie “Duchess of Pain” Maninga moved to Key West and missed her old team in Tennessee. Posting on social media, she met up with fellow derby lover, Tamara “Hangin’ Judge” Roy and the rest came together fast. Women of all backgrounds, ages (Linda “Desdemona Lott” turned 50 this year), all sizes, and all professions compete in two-minute roller jams and raise money for local charities. The Derby Dames choose to play for local charities that help women, children, vets and pets such as Aids Help, SNIP, Womankind, Adopt a Highway and Bahama Village Music Program. And this Saturday, Feb. 20 they will be compete against Revolution Roller Derby to raise money for Key West Wildlife Center. For Vanessa “3 Second Solo”

It is their spouses, co-workers and friendly volunteers that help out with coaching, announcing, running the jam clock, selling food and tickets, and officiating. Centennial Bank donates food for sale and Select Physical Therapy attends to the ladies’ injuries. It is a huge effort from everyone to make it happen, but everyone has a good time. It’s a family event — from the outfits to the music — and the Dames keep it PG. A ticket to the games is $5, kids under 12 are free, making it affordable entertainment that usually draws crowds of about 200. “After all we are a league of professional women, and come Monday, we have to be professional again,” said Maninga, a

Gallery on Greene celebrates Cuba Art captures color and character By Kristen Livengood

F

resh off her latest Cuba art tour, Gallery on Greene owner Nance Frank is inspired by William Bradley (W.B.) Thompson’s Cuba-inspired pieces. “This is one of the most fascinating perspectives of Cuba, I’ve seen,” she said. “I’ve seen a lot of intriguing images of Key West, but never Havana in this light.” Thompson will be the special guest at the reception showcasing “Moon Over Havana” on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Gallery on Greene, 606 Greene St. He visited Cuba with Gallery on Greene and The Studios of Key West for last year’s Havana Biennial Art Exhibition. “I take my sketchbook with me wherever I go,” he said from the Virgin Islands, packing to head to Key West for the show. “I was inspired and fascinated with what I saw in Cuba.” When he returned from the trip, he transposed his sketches to canvas — intriguing and animated as the island itself, according to Frank. Several of his Cuba paintings, as well as his paintings of Key West and the Virgin Islands, will be on display throughout the week. Thompson started a career as a lawyer and only painted to pay his law school tuition. Now it’s a full-time occupation. Frank said his perspective of Cuba is a caffeinated collision of colors and characters, history and humanity while brilliantly conveying the contradictions and question marks of Key West’s international neighbor. For more information on the showing, visit galleryongreene. com or call 305-294-1669.

Thompson’s reception for “Moon Over Havana” is Saturday, Feb. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Gallery on Greene. Next up: Artist Peter Vey will exhibit his work starting Feb. 27.

W.B. Thompson opens ‘Moon of Havana’ with an artist’s reception on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Gallery on Greene.

‘He’s a fabulous painter and portrays Cuba with intrigue and glorious light,’ said Gallery on Greene owner Nance Frank of Thompson’s work.
