The DOERFELS !!!!

Every four years we are gifted by the calendar gods with an extra day, February 29th. Leap year was implemented in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical year. But for us mortals it can be a chance to reset our own circadian rhythm, switch back to neutral, and in this busy time of season, dream of just one, free day to ourselves. So we asked …

What are you going to do with your extra day on the leap year? Stephanie Mitchell, of Key West Seaplane Adventures, is moving on March 1st.” Thank God, I have an extra day to pack. Never move after the shortest month of the year.”

And speaking for all women, and some men too, “ I just want time to clean my house and get a mani/pedi,” said Marjorie Calderon of Key West.

Marathon’s David Foley also plans to spend time with his boat — sanding it. “If I get an extra day, that’s what I’ll do,” Foley said. Note to sailors: it’s for sale soon.

nomic and education items. Wednesday marked the eighth opportunity for Monroe County officials and leaders to embark on Florida Keys Day, which Raschein originally conceived while serving as a legislative aide before being elected to the State House of Representatives in 2012. The day not only provides a symbolic voice of unity from representatives throughout the Keys, it also grants attendees the unique opportunity to meet with key decision makers throughout the capitol building. “I think Wednesday was the most successful Florida Keys Day on record,” said Raschein. “Particularly when you consider the community turnout and the agenda we had in place. When you look at the folks we met with and advocated with— there is just no substitute for our local community learning from and offering input with so many different agencies.” On Tuesday evening Florida Keys delegates were treated to a private reception with state Rep. Holly Raschein. And Wednesday’s engagements with state leaders allowed participants to engage with figures such as Attorney General Pam Bondi, Senator Anitere Flores and Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam. But one of the Wednesday’s most exciting moments occurred on the House Floor when Florida Keys Community

College President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, accompanied by more than 20 FKCC students and staff, witnessed government in action. The local contingent witnessed Raschein move forward House Bill 341, which will pave the way for additional dorms at the college. Also, Senator Flores presented Raschein’s “Florida Keys Stewardship Act” to the Senate

floor. The historic bill was originally sponsored by Rep. Raschein in the House and potentially serves as one of the most significant steps to preserve and protect Monroe County’s water quality and wastewater infrastructure. And while a vote on the bill was postponed in the State Senate, the measure was another step forward for the Florida Keys. “In terms of the process, timing and relationships — all of those were in play on Wednesday,” said Raschein. “We had the Stewardship Act being proposed on the Senate floor and the college bill in the House, so the timing couldn’t have been better.” Of course, any Florida Keys themed event isn’t complete without a reception, which Raschein and her staff pulled off with perfection. Following Wednesdays’ session, a Keys-styled social outside of the capital building came fully equipped with frozen Key lime pie on a stick, rum punch and tasty portions of conch chowder. “Everyone’s favorite happy hour, every year, is the Florida Keys Day reception in the courtyard,” said Raschein. “It was a smashing success and I’ve gotten nothing but amazing feedback from my colleagues and staff alike” For more pictures from the 2016 Florida Keys Day visit: www.keysweekly.com Page 4 • Upper Keys Weekly • Feb. 19, 2016

Florida Sen. Anitere Flores, co-sponsor of the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, spoke during Florida Keys Days in Tallahassee as Florida Rep. Holly Raschein, who sponsored the House version of the Act, looks on.

Attorney David Brown, David Ritz, Bette Brown, Islamorada Village Attorney Roget Bryant, Dan Leben, Islamorada Mayor Deb Gillis, Dr. Randy Fink, CFO Jeff Atwater, Audra Hill, Mariners CEO Rick Freeburg and County Mayor Heather Carruthers participated with other Monroe County representatives at Wednesday’s Florida Keys Day in Tallahassee. The event, spearheaded by Representative Holly Raschein, allows delegates throughout Monroe County a unique opportunity to engage and interact with State officials — while lobbying on behalf of the Florida Keys. Contributed ocal governments and entities in Monroe County thanked the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government for advancing Senate Bill 770, sponsored by Senators Wilton Simpson (R-Trilby) and Anitere Flores (R-Miami). Also known as the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, SB 770 will invest $25 million each year for 10 years into water quality, restoration and protection; water supply protection; and land for critical habitat protection, public safety in case of an evacuation, property rights and military base protection. The companion bill, House Bill 447, which is sponsored by Representative Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo), is slated to be heard in the House State Affairs Committee. “By supporting the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, we are investing in sound legislation that will form an important partnership between the state and the Florida Keys,” said Mayor Mark Senmartin of the City of Marathon. “For this reason, we extend our appreciation to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government for today voting favorably on SB 770 and showing their commitment toward safeguarding an integral part of the State of Florida.” “As a proud part of the Florida Keys, the Council of Islamorada, Village of Islands, is dedicated to looking after the high-quality, high-value environment of the Florida Keys,” said Mayor Deb Gillis of Islamorada. “We deeply support the Florida Keys Stewardship Act and are grateful that the members of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government saw fit to do the same.”

SCIENCE

Einstein’s gravitational waves explained (by a layperson)

By Sara Matthis

T

he internet lit up last week with the news that Albert Einstein’s theory of gravitational waves had been proven 100 years after he first suggested it. What’s amazing, though, are the number of citizens who are truly excited about the discovery — regular people like housewives and restaurateurs and, well, journalists like me. Countless scientists have weighed in on the subject, but I sought out two local experts — a college professor and a high school student. (By the way, any errors in the explanation of gravitational waves should be attributed to me — not Einstein or any of the nice people who talked to me about this subject.) Before we jump into the specifics of gravitational waves though, here’s why it’s cool — it’s a completely new way to observe the universe. “In the past, we’ve used radio waves and light waves. Now we have gravitational waves,” said Mark Frahn, who teaches chemistry and physics at Florida Keys Community College. “Now we can ‘image’ a black hole because that is something that light cannot do. Light can’t escape the black hole.” In the future, it will be possible to set up satellites with sophisticated measuring devices that would be able to triangulate the waves, much like data buoys off the Florida Keys warn Page 7 • Marathon Weekly • Feb. 19, 2016

of an impending storm. The gravitational wave proof came from the scientists at LIGO — Large Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory. They set up two labs — one in Louisiana and one in Washington — that measured the same event. At each lab, light is bounced down two 4-kilometer-long tunnels set at right angles and then rejoined. The normal interference pattern — perfectly matched zigzag lines where lows meet highs and viceversa — came back slightly offset. That’s the proof of gravitational waves. The difference is very minute — measured in fractions of an atomic diameter. The scientists said the waves measured originated some 1.3 billion light years away. Albert Einstein delivered the general theory of relativity in 1915 in which he explained the nature of space time as a

curved surface. A year later, he expanded that definition to theorize that it can also ripple or vibrate. “Imagine a bowling ball on a trampoline, it would cause a dimple in the curvature of space and time, because gravity curves space,” Frahn said. “Now imagine a second bowling ball bouncing on the same trampoline. It would cause waves, like ripples in a pond. Ultimately, that’s what’s going on in the far reaches of the cosmos.” The gravitational waves are the result of something big — two stars colliding or two black holes melding into one. The waves that reach Earth, billions of years later, are infinitesimally small but they still cause the planet to jiggle, for lack of a better word. Frahn uses the trampolineand-bowling-ball analogy, but Marathon High School student Ben Ryder uses Usain Bolt, the Olympic sprinter, to explain Einstein’s theory. “We use a timer to see when Usain Bolt starts and when he crosses the finish line,” Ryder said. “But if he wore a super sensitive timer, we could see that the time he actually ran was off by a nanosecond because of a gravitational wave.” Trampolines, bowling balls, Usain, jiggle, wiggle and warp — the variety of the words alone show how the discovery of gravitational waves has captured the imagination of so many.

T

he Monroe County School District has released the 2014-2015 preliminary school and district grades as reported by the Florida Department of Education. The grades measure school and district success in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies along with the high school graduation rate. The grades do not include a measurement of student learning gains due to the transition to the new Florida Standards Assessment which students took for the first time last year. Monroe County appears 14th in the preliminary district rankings, an upward movement of nine places from 2013-2014. Monroe regained an "A" rating as a district following two years where the district earned a "B" rating. The district's performance was particularly strong in science, social studies, and middle school acceleration where Monroe ranked 10th in each category among Florida's 67 school districts. Monroe was one of 22 districts to earn an overall "A" rating.

Rachel Torres-Brown, a weightlifter at Marathon High School, clean and jerked 180 pounds at the state meet in Central Florida recently. She said weightlifting was a natural progression from her strength track and field experience such as shot and discus.

This girl can lift! Marathon High School student places second in state competition By Sara Matthis

A

t the state competition in Kissimmee, Florida, coach Jessie Schubert was more nervous than his student, Rachel Torres-Brown of Marathon High School. “I wasn’t nervous for ME,” he clarified, “I was nervous for her.” After missing her first “lift” — a clean and jerk movement — of 170 pounds, she loaded an extra 10 on the dumbbell before attempting 180 pounds. Apparently, she knew exactly what she was doing. “She got it,” Schubert said, satisfaction still ringing in his voice after the Feb. 5 secondplace win in the 183-pound weight class. Rachel also benched 170 pounds, a personal best, during the competition. It was a first, though, for both Schubert and Rachel. She learned about creating a team sport from scratch at a new school. He learned about coaching girls. Page 11 • Marathon Weekly • Feb. 19, 2016

Rachel moved to the Keys from Panama City Beach just this year, as a 19-year-old senior. She said she was “persistent” about creating a team that ultimately included three other weightlifters — Oriana Mendez, Sydney Konrath and Jordan Roney. (All three of the girls did very well in competitions this year.) “I didn’t realize how much I had improved this year until I started looking back at my numbers,” Rachel said. For Schubert, a lifelong

Sunday, February 21st, Noon - 3p

weightlifter, it was a chance to learn about how the sport is played at the high school level, and a chance to coach a girls’ team. “The girls were amazing, dedicated and motivated,” Schubert said. “I had so much fun coaching.” He and the students spent a lot of time in the gym building up the complementary muscles with squats and military presses and ‘lat’ pulldowns. Weightlifting — like wrestling, swimming or track and field — is slightly different than a standard team sport. While they enjoy the camaraderie, Schumbert said, each member is striving to beat an individual record. “It’s you against you,” he said. “But all of the girls were proud of each other’s achievements.” Rachel agrees. “I don’t look at weightlifting as being about strength. I like to ‘PR,’ better myself,” she said, referring to athletes’ abbreviation of Personal Record. “It’s something I will always do.” The girls’ weightlifting season runs from November through early February. There are plans for another girls’ season and already 10 male students have signed up to form a boys’ weightlifting team.

N

ow in its 10th year, the Sombrero Beach Run continues to expand into a weekend of healthy activity. It starts with a sign-up on Friday night that includes entertainment and beverages, the race and awards party on Saturday, March 5, and a slew of activities on Sunday. The event is a benefit for KAIR (Keys Area Interdenominational Resources), which serves individuals and families in crisis. Last year, there were 547 registered runners ranging in age from 4 years old to 78 years old. It’s common to see whole families balanced on the starting line, waiting for the gun to go off. Families with non-runners bring beach chairs to watch the action from the sidewalk or kill time on the beach while waiting for mom or dad to cross the finish line. And, of course, the semi-formal runners in town use it as a training ground for the 7 Mile Bridge Run next month. “Everybody loves to be at this race and we love having them,” said Race Director Terry Lynn Kelly. “Plus, it supports such a good cause.” Runners have distance options. The Sombrero Beach Run starts with a 10k, followed by a 5k. Some athletes choose to do both and compete in the 15k challenge. Individual sign ups are $25 ($30 the day of race) or $35 ($40 of the day of the race) for the 15k, and runners under 18 pay a reduced rate of $10. The prizes are worth running for: cash, stays at area hotels, dolphin dip at Dolphin Research Center, activities at Aquarium Encounters, parasailing trips and more. Plus, race organizers will raffle off the very, very, very last entry for the 7 Mile Bridge Run.

Little ones joining mom or dad for the last few yards is a common sight at the Sombrero Beach Run

“And this year, we’re taking credit cards,” Kelly said. The sign up party starts on Friday, March 4 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Sombrero Beach. Participants can enjoy the tunes, sign up or pick up race packets, and nibble on cheese and crackers while sipping wine. There’s also a chance to register for FitBlitz (more on that below). On Saturday, the race gets underway at 8 a.m. for the 10k runners, and 9:15 a.m. for the 5k runners. (For the fleet of feet, this allows them a short rest between races!) On Sunday, the community is invited to participate in FitBlitz. A variety of activities will be offered for free, or reduced rates,

to introduce runners to new sports and healthy activities. Look for the sign-up sheets during race registration and at the awards party. “We have CrossFit, rowing, Zumba, yoga and Pilates classes, plus paddleboarding and kayak tours,” said Marge Roberts, executive director of KAIR. “They will be offered at different venues around the Middle Keys.” The Sombrero Beach Run is KAIR’s largest fundraiser of the year. For more information, or to register, visit sombrerobeachrun.com.

Want to do even more to support KAIR’s cause? The nonprofit is co-hosting the BlueGrass Barbeque on Sunday, March 6 at 6 p.m. at St. Columba Church. Tickets are $20 each and will be for sale during the weekend race festivities.

About 600 runners are expected for the 10th annual Sombrero Beach Run in Marathon on Saturday, March 5. Page 14 • Upper Keys Weekly • Feb. 19, 2016

rican’ Rican, Duchess of Pain, Fire brawl, Salma Havoc. No, these aren’t names for tourist cocktails or monster trucks, these are the women of the Flat Track Roller Derby team in Key West, affectionately known as the Derby Dames. These women are “trill” (consult Urban Dictionary). They are wives, mothers, and professionals in the community but they skate like Martha Stewart on steroids. Less than three-years-old, the Derby Dames came about when Lacie “Duchess of Pain” Maninga moved to Key West and missed her old team in Tennessee. Posting on social media, she met up with fellow derby lover, Tamara “Hangin’ Judge” Roy and the rest came together fast. Women of all backgrounds, ages (Linda “Desdemona Lott” turned 50 this year), all sizes, and all professions compete in two-minute roller jams and raise money for local charities. The Derby Dames choose to play for local charities that help women, children, vets and pets such as Aids Help, SNIP, Womankind, Adopt a Highway and Bahama Village Music Program. And this Saturday, Feb. 20 they will be compete against Revolution Roller Derby to raise money for Key West Wildlife Center. For Vanessa “3 Second Solo” Soleronzo it’s a good time. “I like to be able to play a sport and give back to the community at the same time,” she said. And the Dames need the community. ON FIRE THIS WEEK The teams with the highest percentage of weight loss from Feb. 8 to Feb. 15 are listed below. Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss the previous weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight-loss achieved over two weeks.

There’s definitely nothing wrong with living a healthier life. Every effort, including participating the Marathon Meltdown, which helps to reach that goal is worth it.

Until recently, the quantity of rest had no role in the weight-loss discussion. But consider this: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 35 percent of people are sleep deprived. The statistic for obesity is nearly identical. Coincidence? According to experts, not sleeping enough has some serious consequences for dieters — they crave foods that will give them a “boost” of energy and lack the desire to exercise. A dieter who gets a solid seven to nine hours of shut-eye tends to do better on weigh-loss regimens, all things being equal. — Sara Matthis, Keys Weekly Page 16 • Upper Keys Weekly • Feb. 19, 2016

Recipe Editor’s note: With the chilly weather upon us (again), we decided a hearty soup might just be the ticket. There are a couple of substitutions, though, that might be prudent — like a spicy turkey sausage in place of pork, half the amount of suggested potatoes and skipping the heavy cream all together. arathon High School culinary students traveled to Orlando recently, for the 16th ProStart Culinary competition. Four students competed in the Culinary Challenge where they demonstrated proficiency in knife work, deconstructed a chicken, then prepared an appetizer, entrée and dessert in an hour. Those students were junior Kayla Prince, junior Chris Gaskill, senior Manoli Tsavaris and junior Josiah Arce. Three students competed in the Waiters Relay Challenge. They set three different place settings (American, French and Russian) with all plates, cutlery and glasses and placed three different decoratively folded napkins. Those students were junior Gregory Arce, junior Noah Ross, and senior Kyle Freeman. Chef Carl Stanton said he was very pleased with the effort exhibited by these students. “They are already talking about how to improve for next year,” he said.

ast week Matt and Carolyn Anthony welcomed a new addition to their family – the Grassy Key Outpost. But the proud father of Sparky’s Landing wants everyone to relax and let the family settle in. “Don’t get ‘sparked up,’” as he would say. The Outposts’ new parents want everyone – their staff, their loyal patrons – to know that its business as usual for both places. Sparky’s recently celebrated a 10th birthday and the longtime patrons of the iconic Sadowski Causeway restaurant will continue to be greeted by Ali, Chris, Lora, MJ and the rest of the Sparky’s gang. “We’re fortunate that we have a great team there,” said Carolyn. “They work very hard and take excellent care of our guests.” Which is one of the reasons why she and Matt made the Outpost their unofficial hideout when it opened in 2013. With Sparky’s growing older, the couple realized they had more love to give. When the 3,000-square-foot property became available they

opened their arms. “Its spotless. This place is awesome,” said Matt during a recent breakfast shift at the Outpost. “The staff is small and knowledgeable and we are just happy to be a part of this team.” The Outpost is exactly that for residents of Marathon, Layton, KCB, Grassy and Duck Keys. The mini-store offers essential groceries like canned goods, bread, soda, coffee, hot sauce, specialty cheeses and meat and large selection wine and package beer. They even sell portable charcoal grills. The restaurant is open daily for breakfast (8 to 11 a.m.), lunch (11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and dinner (5:30 to 9 p.m.) and

serves a wide variety of menu items from fresh local seafood to pizzas. Right now Matt is stuck on the roasted chicken severed with mashed potatoes and a garlic and red onion mixed green salad. “Everything here is made fresh to order,” Carolyn says. “And we encourage our guests to take their time enjoying their wine and the company of their dinner companions.” For now, Matt and Carolyn are getting used to the schedule of their new baby and see no reason to make any drastic changes. “The staff is awesome,” Carolyn said. “They have their system figured out, take excellent care of the guests and serve wonderful food. We are fans.” The Grassy Key Outpost is located at MM 58, oceanside.

ADVENTURE

By Kristen Livengood

S

howing off her “guns” to the students of Tavernier’s Montessori School, Teresa Diehl tells the assembled kids that her arms have not only been propelling her throughout the Keys during recent training for a Cuba to Key West kayak trip, but also preparing to circumnavigate Australia. Her breaks from training have a very specific purpose: to help children find their own personal goals and pursue them. “I created a goal and have to figure out how to accomplish it,” she told the children. Diehl first picked up a kayak paddle four years ago while in Australia, studying for her Ph.D in Education. “I was walking the beach, when I met a man in an open canoe who was finishing a Darwin to Cairns trip (1,287 nautical miles) and heading to Sydney. I ran back to my house grabbed a notebook, tea, and biscuits and chatted with him for three hours.” Diehl set a goal that day that she would learn to paddle and would one day kayak around Australia. A former Realtor and teacher, she said she returned home to the States and was reading up on the Cuba-Key West relations and thought the paddle would be a good practice run. While on her quest, she stops at schools to speak to students about goal setting. “The class creates a goal, and then brainstorms ways to accomplish it,” she said at recent stop to her

training in the Lower Keys. Diehl said she once had a 10-year-old tell her that he wanted to develop gills so he could breathe underwater. The class laughed, but she compared his goal to the Wright brothers’ goal of wanting to fly. The whole class then brainstormed ideas on how to make it possible. “I’m trying to spark goals for them to reach for after high school,” she said, comparing young student’s minds to little sponges. “It’s an absolute privilege to go to these classes and talk with these students.” Her next goal is to speak to students in Cuba. Which is why she has been paddling back and forth from Miami to Key West since January in all conditions in preparation for the crossing. On one day Diehl travels from Key West to Little Torch, for example, bringing all the necessaries in her 18-foot kayak to make camp overnight. Diehl lives self-contained out of the boat while she’s training, but said she’s inching toward her goals with the help of kind people she meets along the way. Such as strangers who have let her pitch a bedroll on their beachfront property, and friends who have let her shower and feed her a warm meal or take her to the grocery store. “I come across people like this all of the time,” she said. “The best part of this entire journey is the people and kids I get to meet.” Diehl has already received the clearance from both governments, and is squaring away her crew and fine-tuning her equipment for the Cuba to Key West trip. “Although Cuban migrants make the crossing in small

Diehl said she has had help with weather mapping from some of Nyad’s Key West support crew. In the thousands of miles she’s put under her kayak, she said her favorite time to be in her boat is when it’s raining. “It smooths the surface and I can travel almost silently,” she said. COMMUNITY NEWS

Join the yard sale Yacht Club invites vendors to the party Weekly Staff report

T

he Marathon Yacht Club’s Educational Foundation is staging a community-wide yard sale it’s calling the “Nautical and Knot” on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marathon Community Park. So far, almost two-dozen organizations and vendors have signed on to sell their wares at what might be the Middle Keys’ biggest yard sale ever. “It’s going to be bigger than it was last year,” said Jann Mellman, one of the organizers. Nonprofits are invited to join the sale gratis; for-profit businesses pay $100 for the privilege, but keep the profit.

World-class sailor Nikki Medley will attend a benefit for the Marathon sailing school on Sunday, March 6.

Benefit raises funds for sailing school The public is welcome — no membership necessary — to the Big Benefit Bash. The motto — “What’s Raised in the Keys, Stays in the Keys” — is set for Sunday, March 6 at the Marathon Yacht Club on 33rd Street, gulfside. Special guest Nikki Medley, a world-class collegiate sailor and member of the U.S. Sailing’s Olympic Development team, will share her story on the powerful impact that learning to sail can have on a child’s life. The event starts at 5 p.m., poolside, with entertainment by John Bartus. At 7 p.m. the party moves inside for dinner, live and silent auctions, and music by the Blues Brothers. Tickets are $75 each; call 305-743-6739. The proceeds will support youth sailing and college scholarships for local students.

Besides the vendors, other organizations will also be attending including the Masons who will offer a free child ID kit. There will also be a concession stand and music. Admission is free. All of the money raised at the flea market supports MYCEF programs, which are myriad. The education foundation arm of the yacht club is an entirely separate entity that devotes its time and resources to offering marine-related education and fun. Over the past two years, it has handed out $10,000 in scholarships. This year, it’s undertaking the demanding task of creating a sailing school for local children this summer. So far, members of the foundation have collected eight boats, registered 80 interested children, and set about getting the right certifications from U.S. Sailing for its instructors. For more information on vendor opportunities at the Nautical and Knot, call 305-916-9354. For more information about the Marathon Yacht Club Education Foundation, visit www.mycef. education.

A

manda Couturier escaped the cold Michigan winters on a whim four years ago. And now her Keys apartment is lined with hundreds of hot sauce bottles, which is why the spicy lady cocktail is one of her favorites. “I’m a fan of hot sauce, and this drink packs a little heat,” she said. It’s made with raspberry vodka infused with muddled fresh peppers, triple sec, fresh limes, and other secret ingredients. It’s then topped with a floating jalapeño. Amanda said it’s a favorite among her adventurous guests. “It’s a unique drink. A classic with a punch,” she said. “A lot of people are surprised when they

taste how good it is, because it is a sweet heat.” When she isn’t pouring drinks at the bar, she’s out on the boat scuba diving and shooting fish, riding her bike, or at the gym. She agreed with Castaway Owner John Mirabella that the drink goes best with the oysters Tokyo – raw oysters topped with sour cream, masago, and kimchi sauce – or any of the sushi on the menu. Castaway also just upped the beers on tap, too, now boasting 46 up from the former 37 drafts. Between the spicy lady and the craft beer selection, there is something for everyone. Castaway is located at the end of 15th Street, oceanside, in Marathon. Happy hour lasts from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Peachie Cathy Baier, animal behavior program manager at the FKSPCA, cradles Ollie who is up for adoption.

Tara Vickrey, with the Marathon SPCA, advocates, “Adopt don’t shop!” Currently in Marathon there are six adoptable bunnies. The Marathon SCPCA provides help with spaying and neutering and education on bunny ownership. walking out with new family members. And that’s what people don’t realize, bunnies aren’t just pets, they are family and need just as much attention and care as dogs or cats. Rabbits constitute one third of surrendered animals to shelters. In order to tackle and educate about this nationwide problem, Cathy Baier, a 17-year veteran of Florida Keys SPCA and owner of three house rabbits, is bringing Bunfest to Key West. It’s set for Sunday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Old Armory on White Street in Key West. The FKSPCA has seen a rise in its bunny population to an all time high of 26. (Also a subsequent rise in hamsters, given their availability at pet stores.) Baier said she thinks the public’s perception of bunnies is skewed. “For example, they live up to ten years, that’s a long commitment,” she said. Bunfest’s goal is to educate families on the needs of bunnies. Since they are domesticated — not to be mistaken for Marsh rabbits — bunnies should live indoors with some

outdoor play time. They need to roam and not be caged regularly as they are very social and prefer to be with humans and other rabbits. Bunnies are sensitive to heat and often fall prey to illness, so a close relationship with its owner is optimal. And if you are really ready for the challenge and rewarding love of Thumper, then consider adoption. Cathy stresses, “For the cost of adoption, the animal is spayed or neutered already. We provide support for behavioral and health issues and guidance with nutrition. You will not get that attention or support from a pet store.” Bunfest will offer a variety of services for already owned rabbits: educational booths, a veterinarian from the Marathon Veterinary Hospital answering questions, a bunny spa with grooming and nail services and bunny glamour shots by FKSPCA’s Edie Kehoe. The Crazy Cavies from Fort Lauderdale will also be at the event with guinea pigs and educational materials on caring for them. This is a very kid friendly event with face painting by Flamingo Cafe, a kids craft table and a bake sale. And no event of this kind would be complete without Jeanne Selander from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm with Mo the Sloth. Bunfest is on Saturday, Feb. 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Armory, 600 White St., Key West. For more details, call Tiffany at 305-294-4857 or email tiffany@ fkspca.org.

KEYS DISEASE

Actual stuff people want to sell; funny ramblings included for free The best of Craigslist

C

omedian George Carlin once ruminated about our homes just being places to hold all our stuff, and when we get too much stuff, we just get bigger homes. Down here in the Keys, bigger homes can cost significantly bigger bucks, so getting

rid of excess stuff is often the answer. There are quite a few places in this modern world that let people get rid of excess stuff via the Internet – and one of the most interesting is Craigslist. People post some amazing things for sale (or sometimes for free). This online marketplace,

with virtual storefronts in most major and minor communities nationwide, is a destination where the browser can find almost anything they want (including personal relationships)… and several things they wouldn’t have ever dreamed of, as in these actual Craigslist ads that I swear I am not making up. • (Gainesville, FL) Free Anime Babe Angel Painting and Jalepeño Cheesetoes – I have this very hot painting I did of my ex-girlfriend as a dark winged anime angel hot babe, unfortunately she dumped me on Xmas eve very cold. I don’t want to see her flying around and looking cute anymore so my pain is your treasure. I did the painting in oil acrylic water based paint. I also have some jalapeño cheetoes that I won’t ever eat so if you come to get my babe painting say hello to free snack too. Even if you don’t want the cheetoes I’d rather you take them so they stop weirding me out in my house. I can deliver painting/

snack or you can pick up or we can meet in public place. I just want to unload this angel. Email me! • (Dallas, TX) Free 20 tins of holiday popcorn (minus caramel corn) – you know damn well what happened to all that caramel corn. • (Northern Michigan) Restored Gnome (may be haunted) – Received from my grandmother and he was in pretty ruff condition. Filled in holes with plumbers epoxy… painted with waterproof paint… all plants seem to die around him… preferred nesting zone for spiders… makes children uncomfortable… may be a small chance of possession. • (Los Angeles, CA) You Farted During “Boyhood” - mw4m. There we were, just enjoying a nice quiet Saturday night at the movies. A slow mover, Linklater’s “Boyhood.” Some popcorn. A few sodas. Nothing really happens in the film, we found. For about 90 minutes or so we stare listlessly

at the screen. It’s a thinking man’s film, I say. Beautifully shot. It’s about life, and death and relationships and things of that nature. Just then, at a brief, carefully-timed cinematic pause in dialogue, an enormous fart from somewhere in the back pierces an otherwise silent movie theatre. It had the impact of a baseball bat hitting a leather couch, or George Foreman working the heavy bag. Whack. Loud, deep and masculine. The seat cushion heroically absorbed most of the blow, but not enough that each and every person in the movie theatre instantly burst into nervous laughter. The laughter continued for what felt like a good 5 minutes, until tears streamed down our faces. Even well after the blast, we quietly chuckled to ourselves with a ‘remember the time that guy farted in the movie theatre’ gleam in our eyes. And just like that, with a soft chuckle and a deep breath, we were back into the film. Things happened, people drove around Texas, relationships came and went, there was crying, there was hope. It was as if we had all forgotten about the fart that had brought us together that night. As the sun began to set on screen, the teenage boy, no longer a boy, transitions into an adult ... and braaaaaaap. Another fart from the back row, like two giant hands clapping together, and the screen goes dark, roll credits. We decided, after laughing our way out of the theatre, and all the way home, that this was the best movie that we had ever seen. I imagine the lone fartist sauntering off into the sunset. His work here done. If only I could say thank you, kind sir. You are truly a master of your craft.

MMS STUDENT OF THE WEEK Faculty and students at Marathon Middle School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly.

BOBBY FELTS What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS or MMS and why are they important to you? I am in the marching band and on the varsity tennis team. These are important to me because I helped build the marching band and enjoy music. Tennis is just something that I like to do.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MMS and why? My biggest inspiration at MMS is Mr. Rayhill. He’s been my teacher since sixth grade and even with his personal music talent, he chooses to be a band director. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Band has me most prepared. It teaches discipline and the ability to do things yourself. Music is something with endless possibilities and something you can always do. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? Today’s world is very different, not only technology-wise, but people are also coming closer together and helping others. What advice would you give to a sixth grader entering middle school? Find something you want to do it and practice until you are the best at it. What movie character do you most identify with or would most like to be? The Terminator. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Our biggest challenge is protecting the ecosystem. Most locals respect the wildlife, but there are a lot of people that don’t understand what their actions can do. If you could advise the President of the United States on one thing, what would it be? Terrorism is just the senseless act of harming the innocent to make a point. What are your plans after high school? It’s still early, but I plan to be a musician. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to make your own hobbies and activities. We don’t have the same choices as the big city, but we have so much we can make ourselves.

Authors speak on Thursdays in Islamorada Contributed new series of conversations on writing and publishing has begun at public Library in Islamorada. “The Inside Story: Conversations with Keys Authors” focuses on a notable Keys author each Thursday evening through March. Among those slated to appear are mystery writer Tom Corcoran (“Crime Almost Pays”), culinary crime writer Lucy Burdette, a.k.a. Roberta Isleib, (“Fatal Reservations”), thriller writer James W. Hall (“The Big Finish”), author and Rich Products Chairman Bob Rich (“Looking Through Water”), and Civil War novelist Mike Kenneth Smith (“Home Again”). The hour-long conversations begin at 6 p.m. and are free and open to the public. The authors will be available to sign and sell books provided either by themselves or by the independent bookstore, Hooked on Books, in Islamorada. “With so many dedicated authors who both live in and draw inspiration from the Florida Keys, the library is a perfect venue for this series,” said Ozzie Dominguez, manager of the Islamorada library. “They have a lot of wisdom to share about getting your story and message to the world at large, as well as insights into the unique qualities and challenges that the Keys present.” The series is organized by Jill Zima Borski and Ellen T. White, who are both reporters in the Keys, as well as authors. Borski and White will alternate conducting interviews that explore each featured author’s life, career, process and inspiration, as well as provide observations into the world of publishing (self and conventional) and the agent-author relationship. The series will be audiotaped for the library’s archive. Bob Rich, chairman of the Fortune 500 company, Rich Products, is up next on Thursday, Feb. 25 to talk about his first novel, “Looking Through Water,” an exploration of the relationship between a grand-

father and his grandson who share a love of fishing. Michael K. Smith will reveal how he turned Civil War fact into popular fiction in “Home Again” on March 3. Tom Corcoran will discuss his career as a photographer and writer on March 10; Corcoran returns with his eighth novel, “Crime Almost Pays,” a spinoff from his popular Alex Rutledge mystery series. On March 17, James W. Hall explores “The Big Finish,” the latest in his Thorn series of thrillers. Culinary crime writer Lucy Burdette, a.k.a. Roberta Isleib, author of the Key West food critic mysteries, will talk about her upcoming book, “Killer Takeout,” on March 24. “We expect that aspiring local writers will be interested in attending these talks, as will longtime fans of each author’s work,” said Borski. “Our guests are not only masters of storytelling, in most cases, but entertaining personalities as well. It’s bound to be a good time.” “I think it’s important to note that 10 or 20 years from now students, writers and historians will be able to access these conversations and get a truer sense of what Keys life is,” added White. “Keys writers are an important part of the history, lore and fabric of life on these beautiful islands.” For more information or to reserve seats, contact Jill Zima Borski at jzimakeys@aol.com and 305-852-9886 or Ellen T. White at ellen@ellentwhite.com and 917-523-1138.

Matt and Carolyn Anthony amid the shelves of goods at the Grassy Key Outpost. The affable couple purchased the restaurant/grocery store last week. `

Sparky’s has a sister! Matt and Carolyn Anthony are the proud parents of the Grassy Key Outpost By Jason Koler

ast week Matt and Carolyn Anthony welcomed a new addition to their family – the Grassy Key Outpost.

When the 3,000-square-foot property became available they opened their arms. The restaurant is open daily for breakfast (8 to 11 a.m.),

lunch (11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and dinner (5:30 to 9 p.m.) and serves a wide variety of menu items from fresh local seafood to pizzas.

“Although Cuban migrants make the crossing in small

vessels all the time, no one has actually kayaked it officially,” she said. She said she’s inspired by Diana Nyad’s historic Cuba to Key West swim in 2013 and has actually been in contact with the swimmer. Diehl said she has had help with weather mapping from some of Nyad’s Key West support crew. In the thousands of miles she’s put under her kayak, she said her favorite time to be in her boat is when it’s raining. “It smooths the surface and I can travel almost silently,” she said.
