LOCAL CHATTER By Sara Matthis The 40th annual Original Marathon Seafood Festival takes place this weekend. Sure, people come for the camaraderie, and the music, and the fun … but most make a beeline for the array of food booths. Locals and visitors hit their favorites first, wary of sudden shortages. So we asked …

“I probably buy about six or eight servings of conch fritters every festival,” said Jack Carlson, main squeeze of Leanys, below. “Hey, I’m Two Conchs Fishing Charters; of course, it’s the conch.”
Leanys Carlson’s first pick is stone crab. Then it’s the conch fritters. “Everything is so good, it’s hard to choose,” said the owner of Angler’s Closet in Marathon. Stop by to chat and check out the goods at Carlson’s booth at the Seafood Festival, No. 42, on the back fence closest to the ballfields.
“Those little clam things, you know what I’m talking about,” said Joe Fago of Marathon. “Heck, ya. Those are my favorite.”
Chris Fletcher of Fishermen’s Community Hospital loves the stone crabs. How many servings does he indulge in? “Three servings,” he said, nodding his head, without a scrap of guilt.

Marathon makes a move for TDC money Seeks revenue source to fund affordable housing By Sara Matthis
M
arathon Mayor Mark Senmartin said what everyone’s been whispering at every taskforce meeting on affordable housing: Let’s go after the Tourist Development Council tax money. Marathon is the first municipality in the Keys to suggest the idea formally. Senmartin directed City Attorney David Migut to begin discussions with Monroe County, the manager of the TDC. “The TDC was created to bring tourists here. Mission accomplished. Our businesses, including mine, have benefited from it,” Senmartin said. “But I am asking them to take some responsibility and bear some burden of the affordable housing crisis it helped create. “Maybe we need an inter-local agreement with the county to get back what we pay in, or we need to add another halfcent to the tax and dedicate it to affordable housing. Or, I will get some hate mail for this one, maybe the TDC could cut back on advertising by a halfor even a quarter-penny and use that,” Senmartin said. Of course, the idea has been suggested — though not formally — in the past. The reason it doesn’t have much traction is that city officials would have to secure approval all the way up the government food chain to the state capital to change the
details for the state statute. “I don’t think that’s likely to happen,” said Harold Wheeler, executive director of the TDC. “Over the years, municipalities have tired to change the use of the bedtax dollars, which only covers tourism marketing, and haven’t been able to.” The TDC is funded through a five-cent tax paid by every visitor who reserves a hotel room or vacation rental. The first two cents market the entire Keys as a whole. Cents three and four go to specific districts in the Keys to promote specific destinations. The fifth cent goes
into the general revenue fund. “It wouldn’t amount to much. Our percentage of that would be about $250,000 … but that’s something,” he said. Right now, the City of Marathon is taking a look-for-coinsunder-the-couch-cushions approach when it comes to funding affordable housing: every dollar matters. Earlier this week it reinstated the down payment program for 10 first-time homebuyers who can each qualify for a $10,000 grant. It also agreed to deed restrict affordable housing “in perpetuity” for projects coming online in the future, doing away with the former 20- and

directly to Monroe County and is split into two funds equally: the general revenue fund where monies are supposed to be used to offset tourism impacts, and the other half to Monroe County Land Authority which primarily buys environmentally sensitive lands for conservation. Senmartin’s objective isn’t the whole piece of the TDC pie, he said, but that half-cent paid
50-year restrictions. Still, a more reliable funding source for affordable housing is needed not just in Marathon, but the entire county. Key West developer Ed Swift said he doesn’t think diverting TDC advertising funds will gain the support of the tourism industry in the Keys. Adding a penny to the tax might. “If a one-cent tax supported affordable housing trust funds,

I think everyone would support this,” Swift said. In addition, he said he would support the idea of taxing transportation companies, tour businesses and attractions. Swift supports purchasing the land for affordable housing with public money, and then incentivizing private developers with additional cash to build homes that would be deed restricted forever. “If we want this built — reasonably priced workforce or affordable housing — it has to legislated and we have to subsidize it. But the only way to do that is to be unified in our support and utilize our special

status as an Area of Critical Concern to get this done.” Senmartin said: “The affordable housing crisis will take more than good intentions to fix. We will need to create a funding source or all the great ideas we come up with will be just that.”

News of Turkey Point leak rocks Keys
Marathon's Favorite Place to Party"
5PM A recent report commissioned by Miami-Dade County reveals high levels of tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, in the cooling canals at Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant. Hydrologists surmise it could be affecting Biscayne Bay and an underwater saltwater plume that stretches inland, threatening the Florida Keys’ source of drinking water.
Drinking water is safe for now; experts worry about Biscayne Bay By Sara Matthis
W
ednesday’s news of radiation contamination emanating from the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant leaking into Biscayne Bay alarmed Florida Keys citizens on every level. First, the Keys drinking water comes from the same neighborhood as the plant in Homestead, Florida. Second, the affect to the fishery — so close to home waters — could also have an enormous impact. “There is no tritium [a radioactive isotope of hydrogen] in our water supply,” said Kirk Zeulch, executive director of the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority. Zeulch said there are numerous monitoring wells around the well field that pumps water from the Biscayne Aquifer and none of the tests show a trace. “But this needs to be kept on the front page to keep the issue from fading away. We need help from the state and federal authorities that regulate nuclear power plants and the studies need to continue.” According to news reports about the leak, the high levels of tritium are a result of changes made to the plant in 2013 to increase energy output. Critics allege the reactor’s canals ran too hot and too salty. The result, hydrologists say, is a “saltwater plume” underground that is headed inland. Although it’s five miles away from FKAA’s freshwater well field, Zeulch described it as a “threat, but not an imminent threat.” Several times, the plant has received special permission Page 7 • Marathon Weekly • March 11, 2016
to pump freshwater into the canals to relieve the salinity. However, University of Miami hydrologist David Chin has said that doesn’t alleviate the problem because evaporation rates exceed natural rainfall and it may also increase pressure on the saltwater plume causing it to expand further. Tom Walker, deputy executive director of FKAA, said the utility is not aware of any tritium in the saltwater plume and said that two weeks ago, the power plant was ordered to place extraction wells into the heart of the saltwater plume by a Tallahassee judge. “Florida Power and Light will start extracting the hyper-saline water and then injecting it into deep wells into the boulder zone of the Floridian Aquifer,” Walker said, adding that the detailed plan on how to extract the water from the saltwater plume is due in April. Zuelch said the court-ordered measure could halt the saltwater plume’s progress, or even cause it to retreat. FPL has issued a statement saying the public and drinking water are safe and that improvements are a continuing effort. According to a study released by the Miami-Dade Commission this week, over the last five years levels of tritium found in the canals ranged between 1,500 and 16,500 pCi/L. (Natural levels in Biscayne Bay are 20 pCi/L and the legal limits for tritium in drinking water are 2,133 pCi/L in the United States.) Because some of the canals are as deep as 24 feet, experts worry the tritium (as well as high levels of saline, phosphorus and
ammonia) collected in early January from the bottom of the canals at rates of 2,600 to 3,400 pCi/L are reaching tidal surface waters connected to Biscayne Bay. Miami-Dade County has asked FPL to address these new findings. The report does not address how increased levels of tritium might impact the public or marine life. According to the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission, everyone is exposed to small amounts of tritium everyday as it can occur naturally. It enters the human body through food and drink consumption and half is excreted within 10 days. By comparison, a CT scan delivers almost 2,000 times the amount of tritium considered safe in drinking water. Florida Keys Commercial Fishing Association’s Bill Kelly said he called on Nick Wiley, the director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, to study the problem on Wednesday. “We need to test the lobster, shellfish and finfish in Biscayne Bay,” Kelly said. “We need to know if there’s any concern about public consumption of any of those products collected in that area.” Kelly said it might impact 150-175 commercial fishing operations the South Miami area, not counting restaurants. “The product value of the spiny lobster alone in that area is more than $40.6 million,” he said. “I’m anxious to gather more information on this. The news is not good for man or beast.” Turkey Point was constructed in the early 1970s. It supplies more than one million homes with power in South Florida.

ON FIRE THIS WEEK The teams with the highest percentage of weight loss from Feb. 29 to March 7 are listed below. Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss the previous weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight-loss achieved over two weeks.
What I love about the Marathon Meltdown is how the community comes together to try to improve their health. It also encourages lifestyle changes; it’s not just a quick fix.

With so much focus on weight people often turn to fad diets and bogus weight loss products. Avoid diets and supplements that promise rapid weight loss, restrict entire food groups such as carbohydrates, have strict menus or suggest no exercise. Some ingredients in supplements and herbal products can be dangerous for some people. Before taking anything other than a multivitamin (should have no more than 100% of the daily value of each nutrient) talk with your doctor, especially if you are taking any medications. There are no magic pills or foods to “melt” the weight off; to maintain a healthy weight the best path is a lifelong combination of eating smart and moving more. — Dana Hartley, registered dietician, Dana.Hartley@fhcares.com Page 8 • Upper Keys Weekly • March 11, 2016

Thanks to race volunteers A huge thank-you to all the volunteers who helped put on the 10th annual Sombrero Beach Run last Saturday. We had more than 600 runners and raised a lot of money for KAIR. The runners always comment about how friendly everyone is, and you are a major part of that. We couldn’t do it without you. Penny Ludwin Key Colony Beach
Dinner raises funds for hospital The 23rd annual RE/MAX Children’s Miracle Network Chicken Roast was a wonderful success and raised more than $3,100 for Miami Children’s Hospital, our miracle hospital. Of course, none of this would be possible if it weren’t for the giving people of the Keys. A special thank you goes out to Gemini Printing (tickets), David Williams (entertainment), Keith Andersen (chef ), Chris Clauss (fundraising), Publix, Florida Keys Lobster House, Plaza Grill & Frank’s Grill (dinner certificates), Karen Dennis, and Linda Merchant (gifts), Louise Swenke, and Lorraine Elbon (servers), Roger Hall (auctioneer), Ann O’Bannon and Jason Koler (advertising) and patrons who have supported the benefit the past 23 years. We thank the Marathon Shrine Club members for their continued support and Mary Cinotti and the Bonefish Towers residents for super attendance. Of course, the benefit would not have been possible if it were not for the generous donations from The Sons of the Legion, and the use of the facility from American Legion Post 154 in Marathon. We couldn’t have done it without you. Karen Farley-Wilkinson Marathon
Bunnies and babes don’t go together
NIGHTLY SPECIALS BY CHEF KELLY
We don’t know the exact reason that pet store sale of rabbits was banned in New York and Los Angeles but after fostering two fluffy white rabbits for the past two months, we have learned that they are not ideal pets for children. Of the 29 rabbits now at the FKSPCA, many were purchased from pet stores as a child’s pet. These rabbits come from breeders who are in the business for profit. They are typically sold as babies but given up when their behavior changes or the kids lose interest. This is just not fair to the rabbits. Nor is it fair to the FKSPCA and the wonderful people who donate their time and money to help all the animals. Cute as they are, rabbits cannot be handled like a cat or dog and can easily be hurt if picked up improperly. Being at the bottom of the food chain, they will bite and scratch and even drop dead of a heart attack from fear; a sad situation that we experienced while fostering a blind wild bunny in Louisiana. Rabbits need daily exercise and companionship. Life spent alone in a cage is no life! Outdoor rabbits are at risk from heat and predators. They can be wonderful and fun pets for folks who are settled and live in a calm environment. Those from the shelter are all neutered and litter box trained so allowing them to run around the house when the owner is home makes them good candidates for apartment living. So please, do not buy a breeder-raised bunny for your child at Easter. The shelter has lots of adoptable bunnies. They can tell you everything you need to know about caring for rabbits and help you decide if a bunny is really right for your family. Lynda Schuh & Frank Herdliska Sugarloaf Key

Mindy Conn kicks off campaign Former attorney and mom runs for Seat 3 on school board
M
indy Conn is no stranger to Monroe County’s school system, working as a college success coach with Take Stock in Children, and having two children in local schools. She announced her campaign March 3 at La Trattoria Oceanside. The former private practice attorney, and New York State Assistant Attorney General, has been an adjunct professor at FKCC, a Monroe County substitute teacher, and is a past member of the district’s advisory committee. She is challenging Capt. Ed Davidson who serves District 3. “I truly love the Keys and have long been involved with our schools, teachers and students,” she said. “My interest in being your choice for school board is the desire to strengthen our school district with my knowledge, experience and dedication.” — Weekly Staff report
2. Key West High School students Sandra Ballard, Conn’s daughter Emily, and Kristin Crane help out at the event. 3. John Hernandez, Carl Stevens, Ben Rogers, Steve Torrence, and Matt Massoud discuss the state of the schools.
4. Jessica Cranney and Cathy Crane support Mindy Conn for School Board. 5. Tommy Mack, Danyle Gray, and Tony Yaniz come out to back Mindy Conn. 6. Doug Harrison, Dyne Vaughn, and Sue Harrison help check people into the party.

Legislation invests in Florida Keys’ most significant environmental needs Weekly Staff report
L
ocal governments and entities in Monroe County, applauded the final passage of the Florida Keys Stewardship Act on Thursday, including State Representative Holly Raschein. “Just the passage for the bill is a win,” she told the Weekly. “This is a major comprehensive policy is just for the Florida Keys – it pertains just to us and puts us right up there with the big boys and signals the willingness of the state to be our partner in cleaning up our nearshore waters and assisting with our land acquisition needs.” The Florida Keys Stewardship Act invests in water quality, restoration and protection; water supply protection; land for critical habitat protection; public safety in case of an evacuation; property rights; and military base protection. The act will lay the groundwork for increased future funding for the Florida Keys’ most significant environmental needs. Raschein calls the $5 million annual funding for 10 years “veto-proof” and
says the money can be used at discretion of local leaders for a variety of reasons from canal restoration to wastewater upgrades. Her sentiments were echoed by local officials. “We are happy that both the Senate and House came together in support of the Florida Keys,” said Mayor Heather Carruthers of Monroe County. Key West Mayor Craig Cates said, “Taking into consideration all the visitors who travel across the state, nation and world to see and experience the Florida Keys’ unique ecosystem and third-largest coral reef in the world, this Act is a step toward ensuring that its tourism industry, among others, will continue to flourish and generate revenue for the State of Florida.” In Marathon, Mayor Mark Senmartin said, “The Florida Keys Stewardship Act doesn’t just have the Keys in mind as the investments will benefit the entire State of Florida. It will also allow the environment and island atmosphere that the Keys is known for to thrive for years to come.”

KAIR’s race to end hunger Tenth annual Sombrero challenge accepted
More than 400 walkers and runners turned out for the 10th annual Sombrero Beach Run that features two distances — a 10k and a 5k. About 60 hearty souls did both! It’s one of the most beloved races of the year in the Middle Keys, where locals turn out to run alongside and cheer their friends. More importantly, race proceeds support KAIR, a non-profit food pantry that also helps people in Marathon and Florida Keys who have found themselves in crisis, helping them return to self-supporting, productive lives. — Weekly Staff report KRISTEN LIVENGOOD & SARA MATTHIS/Keys Weekly

1. Jen Reeves of Big Pine Key places second in her age group behind Key West’s Amy Bradshaw. She proudly shows off her medal on the beach. 2. Giovanna and little sister Sasha goof around before the start of the 5K. Giovanna was a little fireball – pounding up the sidewalk and occasionally doubling back to find mom and sister. 3. Key West’s Francisco Ramirez, right, and Marathon’s Joe Zaila had a very competitive, but super friendly couple of races. In the 5k, Joel bested his friend by one second with a time of 19:36 for 5th place. In the 10k, Francisco bested Joel by one second with a time of 40:06 for third place. But Francisco wins: he left his house at 2 a.m. on Saturday morning and rode his bicycle 25 miles before hitching a ride the rest of the way to Marathon.

Still, she finds this role challenging; a departure from her normal dramatic roles. “Alastair is one of the funniest actors I’ve ever met. He is challenging me to be more of a comedic actor,” she said, “and it’s a little bit of a stretch.” The story takes place in ancient Rome. It tells of a crafty slave named Pseudolus as he schemes to win his freedom by procuring Philia for Hero. Fast-paced and witty, “Forum” offers saucy situations, cases of mistaken identity, chase scenes, song and dances. Caitlin plays the saucy and innocent maid, Philia, to his barely-postpubescent favorite son, Hero, of an overbearing mother (Jenn Eick-Mixon). Their chemistry on stage is undeniable.
“Because we’re in a relationship already, we don’t have to force the emotion on stage,” said Alastair, 28. “We don’t have to create that relationship from scratch, as strangers.” Alastair has always had an on-again, off-again love affair with acting. While he feels most comfortable in comedic roles, he said acting alongside Caitlin is an inspiration. “She has so much experience, on stage and behind the scenes,” he said. “She understands the whole field and is incredibly talented. It’s a joy to work with her.” Caitlin and Alastair have just as much in common off the stage. She’s a dolphin trainer at Theater of the Sea in the Upper Keys. He works at The Turtle Hospital in Marathon. “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” runs through April 9, with performances at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday every weekend and a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday, April 3. Tickets are $25. Call the Marathon Community Theatre at 305-743-0994 for tickets and information or visit online at www.marathontheater.org. The theater is located at 5101 Overseas Highway in Marathon.

Creative writing contest open to Marathon students

M
arathon Middle/ High School is launching a new creative writing competition for its students. Marathon Writes is open to MMHS students in grades 6-12 and requires an interested community adult to nominate young writers and nudge them to strengthen their creative and critical thinking skills by writing for fun and prizes. Young writers can submit stories, poems, essays, plays and illustrated manuscripts (graphic fiction and nonfiction). Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 30. Student writers will be competing for cash prizes and portfolio publication of winning work. This initiative is sponsored by the Monroe County School District and organized by Dr. Kathy Lancaster, director of the media center at MMHS, and Dr. Lois Wolfe Markham, an associate professor of English at Florida Keys Community College. “We want Marathon students’ diverse talents and perspectives to shine in a serious way,” said Dr. Lancaster. The competition has submission criteria of a literary journal and will require an interested adult to nominate the writer for participation. Student work will be judged in two divisions: grade 6-8 and grade 9-12. Judging will emulate adult writing contests; published writers and writing instructors will judge in a blind competition without knowledge of the authors’ names. For more information please contact Kathy Lancaster, 305731-5886, Kathy.lancaster@ keysschools.com, or Lois Wolfe Markham, 305-942-1357, lois. markham@fkcc.edu.

t first glance, Caleb Goins, 30, is like any other local — he loves fishing and spearfishing, has a young son, a laid-back attitude and a mop of unruly hair. But to see him in action, creating his pierced metal art, is to watch a very experienced artist at home with his craft. A visitor to the Keys since he as seven years old, Goins has
split his time between the Keys and Asheville, North Carolina. “I’ve get the pirate blood from my dad,” Caleb said of his love affair with the islands. He also credits his father getting him started in the arts in 2000 when they conceived of the brand and interior finishes for Bonefish Grill in St. Petersburg, which has since gone national. But the art is all his own — no computer images and nothing cut by an automated machine — which sets his work apart
from the imitators. “I start with soap stone,” he said, gracefully sketching with something that looks like a stubby piece of chalk. Then he retraces the line again, with a thick blue marker. Then it’s all about a steady hand. “The plasma cutter has a 40,000 degree Farenheit flame, cutting as fine as 1/16 of an inch,” Caleb said. “It’s basically like having a laser on your finger.” His canvas? Usually it’s 1/8Page 24 • Upper Keys Weekly • March 11, 2016
(CONT.) inch gauge aircraft-grade aluminum — perfect for the Keys climate — but he also works in other metals. After the work is cut, Caleb uses a variety of methods to buff the piece and add texture. His clients are mostly fishing enthusiasts such as charter captains, like Capt. Dave Schunke of the fishing television show “Mavericks.” One of his earliest fans was “The Spanish Fly” — Capt. Jose Wejebe who passed away in 2012 at the top of his television popularity. His daughter, Krissy, inherited about a dozen pieces. “My favorite piece depicts my dad and the show,” she said, “but I really like the one of the wahoo, too.” Krissy recommended Caleb’s work to the Under Armour apparel line when it came time to design the collection of clothing that supports the Jose Wejebe Spanish Fly Memorial Foundation. Caleb said that while exploring the graphite side of art is new, it’s not a total stretch. (“My parents told me that when I was little all I wanted was a crayon and a piece of paper,” he said.) Caleb worked on the drawings through the night for the Under Armour project so as not to be distracted by his adorable 18-month-old son, Oliver.
Spearfishing is one of his hobbies he translates into art.
“He just goes nuts when he sees fish,” said Caleb. Of course, so does Caleb. He’s a lifelong angler and spearfisherman, relying mostly on memory and impression when sketching. That personal saltwater experience explains not only the physicality of the art — broad strokes and manly materials — but also the natural grace of the flowing lines, translated by a seasoned athlete in the perpetual contest between man and fish.
His pieces range from friendly little 12-inch “Zany Fish” to panels as long as 6 feet; a vignette he calls them. Many are custom pieces that tell a story: about the angler and the species he loves to fish, friends, family and even the client’s boat. Although he practically gives away the Zany Fish, most sculptures cost between $250 to upwards of $10,000. Business owners all along the Eastern Seaboard have commissioned Caleb to create signage, too. He recently completed a huge sign for Nautilus Spearfishing in Miami. One local example is the sign plate on The Art Studio in Marathon. “Caleb is truly gifted and talented. It was like he was inside my head and could see exactly what I wanted,” said owner Sheila Cook. “But I think I was equally impressed with his kindly manner and work ethic.” “He’s just a good guy,” said Krissy. “Those kind of guys are few and far between. And he’s an incredibly talented artist.” Stop by to say hello to Caleb at the Original Marathon Seafood Festival in booth #148, located in the block in front of the stage. Besides the aluminum sculptures, Caleb Goins will also be selling his own line of apparel and canvas prints of his artwork. For more details, friend him on Facebook.

he City of Marathon Parks and Recreation Department hosted a fishing fun day for beginning anglers on March 5 at Oceanfront Park. Sixty-five youngsters between the ages of four and 14 participated. A series of skills centers were set up, and anglers were required to go through each station before getting a fishing pole donated by Fish Florida. The anglers then proceeded to the dock for live shrimp to put on a hook and chummed waters. In addition to instruction on ways to keep wildlife safe, children learned to cast, were instructed on various types of tackle and bait, and reviewed the importance of being a safe angler. Staff from The Turtle Hospital (Liz Miska) and Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (officers Malachi Wilkins and Adam Garrison) also participated. Marathon Mayor Mark Senmartin, City Manager Chuck Lindsey and skilled fishermen Jim Martin and Missy Threil also helped at the event. Publix Super Markets donated the snacks, Big Time Bait and Tackle donated live bait and chum, and the Marathon chapter of Organized Fishermen of Florida gave $150 to cover program costs. The city received an equipment grant in order to provide each child a new spin-cast rod at the conclusion of the event. Page 29 • Marathon Weekly • March 11, 2016

They saw a sawfish! Shark anglers hook a very rare fish By Sara Matthis
A
nglers in Marathon had a very, very rare experience last week when they hooked a 14-foot smalltooth sawfish at about 8 p.m. while on a shark fishing expedition. Capt. Scott Koehl of Sea Dog Charters thought his clients had hooked a goliath grouper, when suddenly the group caught sight of the long and jagged nose. Then officers from the Fish and Wlldlife Commission happened on the scene during a routine check. Koehl said the officers had to get on their computers to check the rules — sawfish are that rare. “When we first hooked him, he started spooling us, we were down to 50 yards of line,” said

FWC officers came upon the scene and took this photo of the lucky party aboard Sea Dog Charters’ shark fishing expedition.
Koehl. He threw the anchor ball and his client, Jeff Kaplon of Pennsylvannia, sat down for a long fight. When the fish finally showed itself, and the anglers realized what they had, it was time to cut it loose. “The officers wanted me to cut the line as close to the hook as possible. But I was a little apprehensive about getting my hand in the water with all those sharp teeth,” Koehl said, laughing. “Then the wire leader broke off at the right spot and it swam away.” Sawfish are so rare not very much is known about their habitat or even mating habitats. The fish belong to the same order as rays, and are believed to use their nose as a sword to disable prey or defend themselves from predators. Sawfish have been protected in Florida since 1992 and the smalltooth sawfish is currently listed as endangered under the United States Endangered Species Act. Kaplon said he’s a frequent visitor to the Keys, but not a regular angler. Of the experience, he said, “Unbelievable!”

owadays going out for a drink requires Google, an Idiot’s Guide to Bartending or a companion who is fluent in French. Surveying a drink menu demands the same concentration, and causes the same bewilderment, as reading the Berlin U-Bahn map or trying to calculate pesos to dollars. Bars are another country (they are still called bars, right?) and patrons are foreigners mispronouncing the menu while paying full fare. Bartenders speak a language comprised of liqueurs, infusions, botanicals and burning fruit. It is a strange and wondrous world that would make Willy Wonka proud. Trending, as the kids say these days, are the tastes of jalapeño, pamplemousse (French for grapefruit), hibiscus, elderflower, and tea — yes, tea, as in oolong. Bitters and “charring” fruit with a Bic lighter also seem to enhance the flavor of Aylesbury Duck Vodka or Absolut Elyx Vodka. Elyx? Don’t

Not only is he mixing up unusual beverages, but he’s having fun naming them. “The whole menu is a nod to church based names, playing on the idea of drinking at The Saint,” said Moore with a wink. He gives traditional drinks a twist. The “Miracle Mojito” replaces club soda with champagne and the garnish on the “Hasidic Julep” has an uncanny resemblance to an Orthodox Jew’s sideburns — long, swirling orange rinds. Not to be outdone, Agave 308 has scrapped everything we think we know about a margarita. Fresh lime juice and agave — a plant used in the production of tequila and a naturally sweetened syrup — are used, no factory mixes here. And as for all the Spanish words on the menu? They are all followed by the word “tequila,” so no worries. Bartender Ashlyn Cockrell loves serving the “Big Baller” made with 1492 Don Julio, Grand Marnier, agave, and fresh
lime and orange. “You know the type of guy who will spend $40 on a drink called the ‘Big Baller,” Cockrell said with a sly smile. Caroline’s Other Side offers up its masterpiece: Guns ’n’ Rosés. A total of nine ingredients comprise this $35 cocktail that bartender Mark Straiton calls a “shared experience.” Who wouldn’t crave Absolut Elyx Vodka, Cocchi Rosa, coconut oolong tea, lemon juice, charred orange, and peach incense? My New Joint above the Square Grouper on Summerland Key rivals its Key West counterparts with concoctions both fiery and amusing. Start cocktail hour remembering your college days with a “Hot Box” made of Effen cucumber Vodka, fresh grapefruit and jalapeño. Or dare to ask for a Fish Whistle with a straight face — a mixture of tequila, fresh lemon juice, basil leaves and Anaheim chile pepper. It’s a brave new world out there. But don’t fear drinkers old and young, you can always ask for an icy, cold one — no translation needed.
Have ‘High Tea’ at My New Joint; no little cucumber sandwiches just Absolut Tea, fresh lemonade and club soda. Cocktails: Because good stories never start with eating a salad.
Aromatic bitters line the bar like soldiers. Page 33 • Marathon Weekly • March 11, 2016

Bartender Billy Blasingame shakes up cocktails at Key Colony Inn.
Key Colony Inn By Kristen Livengood
L
ocal Realtor Ben Daniels walked into a bar…and wanted to buy a Navy friend a drink. His friend ordered a Pearl Harbor from Key Colony Inn’s bartender Billy Blasingame. Billy has been bartending at Key Colony Inn for nine years, with a couple breaks in between, after moving from Memphis to the Keys. “A couple friends worked summers in my area and convinced me to come down for a winter, and I never left,” he said. “When they told me they had a job lined up for me in the Keys, I was there.” The Pearl Harbor is a pretty simple drink, gin and Diet Coke. Billy prefers Tanqueray for the gin. The special touch is Billy’s shake that makes it extraordinary. “We aren’t redefining the cocktail,” he said, adding that the drink goes best with one of his favorites on the menu, the chicken Parmesan. His favorite part about working at Key Colony Inn is the dedicated staff and hardworking owners. “It’s nice being somewhere where the owners are really busting their butts to make sure the restaurant is smoothly run,” he said. When he isn’t bartending, he helping the reef by plucking as many invasive lionfish out of the water as he can, and loves lobstering and bike riding. Key Colony Inn is located at 700 E. Ocean Drive in Key Colony Beach, just north of Marathon’s downtown. Turn off U.S.1 at the Sadowski Causeway.

Shake that fringe, baby Throwback reappears in modern fashion with flair
T
he resurrection of ’70s inspired fashion in 2015 brought on a surge of patchwork patterns, flared pants, and colored suede with the most coveted looks incorporating fringe. From chunky, oversized fringe dangling from sweaters and winter coats to delicate fringe details adorning necklaces and evening wear, the runways for spring and fall were covered with fringe and this swinging trend isn’t going away fast. Below are a few tips on how to wear fringe in a modern way. • Fringe skirts and dresses: Skirts and dresses are no exception to the fringe trend with styles incorporating statement, full-on fringe reminiscent of the roaring ’20s or a sophisticated look with just a touch of fringe along the hem. To embrace this trend, choose a length and style appropriate for the occasion. Knee length or midi length skirts and dresses in colors such as LEAH MAKI black or metallic are going to look more sophisticated for a wedding A fashion-obsessed or formal event. Whereas a ministyle Keys blogger, skirt or shorts with fringe details in formerly from Minnesota. Her current bright hues could be worn for day infatuations include or night in a more informal capacity. statement pieces, You can also pair a swaying fringe dramatic heels, red lipstick and vintage skirt with a button down denim shirt or tank for a more laidcostume jewelry. Visit LeahsFabulous- back feel. To draw additional Finds.com for more attention to your lower half, of her musings. pair a fringe hemline with standout heels. • Fringe details: This season’s statement trend also is great on tops, jackets and vests. A touch of fringe adorning the back of a blouse or around the front neckline are the perfect bold statement when worn while shopping with your girlfriends or when attending brunch. Although most jackets will be too hot for our warm Florida Keys weather, a fringe vest is lightweight and great for layering over a shirt and shorts. The key is to keep it simple by wearing only one statement piece at a time and then styling the rest of your outfit around it. • Fringed accessories: Not quite ready to embrace a full-on fringe outfit? Try a handbag, shoes, or necklace with fringe details or opt for something with a tassel embellishment for a more subdued look. A tassel or fringe necklace is a great way to add color to your wardrobe as many of these fun neckpieces incorporate bright hues and bold patterns. Tassels are a classic, artsy embellishment. A metal necklace with fringe detail offers movement to direct the eye while still remaining chic. If, like me, your craving for fringe has become unquenchable, spring is the perfect time of year to add more of this fun element of surprise to your wardrobe. It’s actually quite amazing that a trend could feel this sophisticated and still be this fun to wear. Just wait until you try dancing; it may make you wish you had been born in another decade!
A tassel, cousin to the fringe, brings attention to those body parts that deserve it.

KEYS DISEASE
Sir George Martin – 1926-2016 A memory of meeting the’ fifth’ Beatle in Las Vegas
M
usicians, producers, and music lovers around the world are mourning the passing of legendary producer
— and fifth Beatle — Sir George Martin. More than just the Beatles’ producer, he was their arranger, session player, songwriting advisor, mentor, and father figure as the four young lads from Liverpool went about changing the world in the 1960s and beyond. In addition to the Beatles, Martin worked with a host of other acts, most notably, the band America in
the 1970s. He composed and produced movie soundtracks and title songs, including the themes for Bond movies Goldfinger and Live and Let Die. The only other producers anywhere close to as famous or notable as Martin would be Quincy Jones, Phil Spector, and Alan Parsons. While I’ve seen Paul McCartney in concert a number of times (albeit from very distant seats), I never met a Beatle up close and personal… until a trip to Las Vegas back in the early years of this new millennium. My wife Marlene and I had just seen the amazing Cirque du Soleil production “O,” and we were exiting the theater along with the hordes of other show-goers. Marlene, being somewhat smaller and shorter than I, has this talent of finding the holes in masses of slowly moving humanity that I would never fit through, ever. At that moment, she found a space and moved ahead, leaving me with the rest of the crowd. As I moved slowly to the exit,
I found myself face to face with the fifth Beatle, George Martin himself. I stood there, not quite believing who I was next to, and just blurted out, “Sir George!” He looked at me, a question in his eyes, and asked, “Yes — do I know you?” I replied, “No, but you are responsible for a huge part of the soundtrack of my life and some of my favorite music ever. Thank you very much, and it is an honor meeting you!” Being the proper English gentleman, George introduced me to his son, Giles (also a music producer), and was so cordial and pleasant and unbelievably down-to-earth that he made me feel like I wasn’t standing there talking to a living legend. At that moment, I shouted Marlene’s name across the crowded theater exit to get her to come back to where I was standing and conversing with the actual producer of the actual Beatles. Marlene’s first thought, she told me later, was that she wondered who it was from the
Keys that I had run into in Las Vegas. Imagine her surprise when I said, “Marlene, I’d like to introduce you to Sir George Martin and his son, Giles.” We had a brief but very pleasant conversation, and then went our separate ways into the bright Las Vegas night. There was no way we could have known it at the time, but I’m sure Sir George and Giles were there doing their preliminary work on what was to become the Cirque du Soleil/ Beatles production of “Love.” In subsequent trips to Vegas, we have seen that show twice, and it is more amazing than one can imagine. If you only see one show in Las Vegas… So as we mourn the passing of yet another musical legend in 2016, I will always remember that special night in Las Vegas where I met and shook hands with the legendary fifth Beatle, Sir George Martin. Rest in peace, and thank you for everything. • • • • • In other musical news, my band Jade Storm (with Adrienne Z, Glenn Faast, Rob Garza, and Steven Miller) will be headlining the 40th annual Original Marathon Seafood Festival Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. Other awesome acts include Amber Leigh, Chloe Dolandis, Jimmy Hawkins & Felix the Catt, I-Land Vibe, Terry Cassidy & Gary Hempsey, Tim Dee & Jim Hill, and the Stone Crabs! CROSSWORD THEME: THINK SPRING
By Kristen Livengood
Key West might be the capital of the tutu, so why not rock a green one on Thursday? And, there’s an easy, no-sew way to pull one together fast. According to instructables.com, all you need is 12 yards of green tulle to make an adult sized tutu, some gold ribbon, and some scissors.
For less than $5, find a pin to make sure you don’t get pinched on the Irish holiday. This pin was picked up at Key Colony Beach Day last weekend, and can be found on Amazon Prime. But locals and visitors can find gems like these in local boutiques or their grandmother’s jewelry box.
Nothing says St. Patty’s Day better than green beer (and Guinness, and Irish Car Bomb shots…), and just about every bar and restaurant in town will be serving it up on Thursday. But for those not traveling further than their patios, grab a small bottle of green food coloring and spice up that pilsner. Just don’t add too much, green teeth are never a good look.
