LOCAL CHATTER By Gabriel Sanchez It makes no difference if you’ve been gone a day or 20 years, life away from the Keys is just different. Compared to the mainland, our way of life is far from the ordinary rat race. The only traffic you’ll find on the water might be a passing gust. Whether it’s the familiar smell of salt air, the warm glow of the sun, the sound of the waves gently washing ashore, each of us holds a particular Keys life experience near to our hearts. So we asked locals ...
When you leave the Keys, what do you miss most?

Kaitlin Kehl, of Sparky’s Landing, took her time before responding. “I guess I miss being on island time,” she said.
Teresa Konrath, Marathon High School’s athletic director, notices the absence of Zen. “I miss the serenity of the ocean. It’s beautiful and brings calmness.”
Kathy Lancaster, librarian at Marathon High School, said, “When I leave I miss the relaxed atmosphere in town and the cool breeze in the late afternoon.”
Lisa Rodriquez, of the Island Fish Co., had an instant answer and well-timed plug. “I definitely miss tarpon fishing with my husband, Pablo (Slamtime Charters), on the Contender the most.” Happy fishing, Lisa and Pablo!

John Ryan, personal trainer, loves a particular season and a particular moment in Marathon. “I always miss the long summer days and the sun setting over the ocean. People come from all around the world to see the sunset here in Marathon,” Ryan said.

Who are the Keys delegates?
Parties firm up representatives to send to the national conventions
I

n the national news, both the Democrats and Republicans are leveling charges within their own parties of attempting to “steal” the election by way of the delegate process. The news out of places like Colorado and Georgia have many voters wondering how this process works. Who are my delegates? What rules must they follow? If by popular vote my state supports Candidate X, how can the delegates vote for Candidate Z at the convention? The answer is far from simple. In fact, it’s downright confusing. “This is a very intriguing national election,” said Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin, who said even she isn’t clear on the difference between states much less how the two main parties – Democrat and Republican — come to a decision in the Florida Keys. One thing is for certain: the parties have completely different processes, even at the Keys level.

T
he Republican Party of Monroe County has already chosen its delegate for the national convention to be held in Cleveland, Ohio on July 18-21. Carey Goodman of the Upper Keys was elected last week to represent the Keys which is a part of Congressional District 26, largely made up of Miami-Dade County. Goodman is the daughter of Keys party chairman Debbie Goodman. She is a state employee working in the judicial system and is a former alternate delegate for previous conventions. “I’ve never been a delegate before and never chosen at the district level,” Carey said. Typically, the Republican Party of Monroe County sends one delegate every four years. The person applies, and then goes through a two-minute interview process with the state committee chair, state committee man and state committee woman from both Miami-Dade and Monroe counties; six people. Although the delegate must be someone who has done significant work for the party, the interview is actually more of a set of instructions, Carey said. The Republic delegate must agree to spend the entire week at the convention, understand they must pay their own way and agree to cast a ballot for Donald Trump in the first three votes. If a fourth vote occurs, the delegate is no longer bound to Donald Trump. The Republican Party has delegates from each district, and also alternate delegates and 99 at-large delegates that are statewide candidates. Debbie Goodman said the at-large delegates are required to also support Donald Trump in the first three votes. NOW SHOWING

T
he Democrat Party of Monroe County has yet to choose its delegate. Already applicants have submitted their bids, and those bids have been reviewed by both the Sanders and Clinton camps that have the right to strike individual names. The list of approved applicants will be released in the next few days, said Sue Cunningham who is the Democrat State Committeewoman for Monroe County. On May 7, the party will have a “caucus” — a formal election where party members cast ballots at two election offices (Marathon and Pinecrest). The four delegates chosen to represent Congressional District 26 are those that receive the most votes, typically more than 250. The Keys usually send one delegate. In 2012, it was Pam Martin. In 2016, the Democrats of Congressional District 26 will send one male and two female delegates that support Hillary Clinton. They will also send one male delegate to support the Sanders campaign. Cunningham said the delegates pledge to vote for the candidate they represent at the national convention which will be in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 25-28. However, the Democrat party also has “super delegates” who are not bound to any candidate. Cunningham said the super delegate from Congressional District 26 is Bret Berlin of Miami-Dade County. There are 32 super delegates from Florida. Individuals elected as a district level delegate on May 7 will be called to a special meeting in Orlando in late May to select Florida’s PLEO, atlarge, and alternate delegates to the national convention.

When someone has a positive experience, they aren't so quick to give credit where credit is due. I speak of Dr. George Botelho of the Injury & Spine Institute. I have known him for decades and would just like to give a shout out to this terrific person. Jan Burch Marathon

ENVIRONMENT
Every day is Earth Day in the Keys (But there are a lot of events this weekend)
Weekly Staff report The Florida Keys encompass four national wildlife refuges and are surrounded by nearly 3,000 square nautical miles of national marine sanctuary waters, which protect the continental United States' only living coral barrier reef, so it’s no wonder that every day is Earth Day in the island chain not just on Friday, April 22. Visitors can pay homage to Mother Earth with Keyswide outdoor events, volunteer opportunities and other meaningful activities this weekend. KEY LARGO A "Dive for the Fishes" Earth Day Weekend is planned Friday and Saturday, April 22-23, sponsored by the Reef Environmental Educational Foundation. Weekend events include a fish identification workshop at 6:30 p.m. Friday at REEF headquarters, 98300 Overseas Highway. Attendees can learn about the most common fish of the Florida Keys and REEF's cornerstone program, the Volunteer Fish Survey Project, which enables scuba divers and snorkelers to collect and report information on marine fish populations. Saturday morning, a two-tank dive trip dedicated to fish surveys, reef cleanup and debris removal is planned with Horizon Divers in Key Largo. For more information, visit reef.org. ISLAMORADA Cheeca Lodge & Spa is hosting Earth Day activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 24 at MM 82 in Islamorada. Attendees can listen to presentations on environmental topics by speakers from Islamorada's History of Diving Museum, Marathon's Dolphin Research Center and Turtle Hospital, and the Lower Keys' Sea Camp and Mote Marine Laboratory. Each speaker will have an interactive exhibit. Children are invited to dig for "Cheeca Treasures" in individual
sandboxes and enjoy fishing and casting lessons on the resort pier. The main event is a contest among teams from Florida Keys schools and businesses who each sponsor a gigantic alphabet letter to spell out the 2016 Earth Day slogan, "SAVE EARTH," on the property's Atlantic Ocean beach. For information, visit cheeca.com. BIG PINE & LOWER KEYS Bahia Honda State Park will host its annual Earth Day Celebration Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at MM 36.8. The family-friendly event features live music, a sand sculpture contest, fish printing, face painting, children’s games and marine touch tanks as well as environmental exhibitions presented by several local groups. For more information, call 305-872-9807.
KEY WEST The City of Key West is hosting Earth Day’s Great American Clean Up, on Earth Day, Friday, April 22 with registration from 9 a.m. to noon at Bayview Park. They are seeking volunteers to clean up different parts of the island. They will provide bags and gloves. Starting at 11 a.m., trucks will be sent to collect the trash. Organizers also seek volunteers who can come to Bayview Park to help record findings. There will also be educational activities for everyone. Also on Friday, the Key West Turtle Museum will host an Earth Day celebration from noon to 4 p.m. at 200 Margaret St. in Key West's Historic Seaport. The public is invited to tour the Turtle Museum and meet representatives of local organizations who are addressing the concerns and conservation of wildlife in the Florida Keys. Admission is free. To learn more, visit keywestturtlemuseum.org.

T
he two giant carved heads in Diane Tyma’s living room — boulder size, weighing about 200 pounds each — are an enigma wrapped in mystery. The coral boulders each feature a face. On “Specimen A,” as Tyma calls it, one of the eyeballs looks like a perfect sphere of brain coral. The other carved coral head features a prominent brow. No one knows whether these are ancient artifacts or modern day garden art. They were unearthed in the yard at the corner of Aviation Boulevard and Dolphin Drive in 2000 during a landscaping project involving a backhoe. The discovery of the first was a bit of an “Oh, gee” moment. But when Page 11 • Marathon Weekly • April 22, 2016
the second one popped out of the ground, it was “whoa.” The owners of the property, who were readying it for sale, called Diane’s husband, Tom. “He went over and looked at it and came home and told me about them. He said, “I kind of want them,” Diane said, smiling. In the end, the Tymas struck a deal. One Tahitian black pearl necklace — at the time the
Tymas owned a jewelry store on Duck Key, All That Glitters — for the two coral heads. Ever since, Diane has been searching for an answer. She’s called in historians, artisans and tried to spark the interest of more than one archaeologist. “I think this is a real Indian artifact from the Tequesta Taino tribe. They lived here in the Keys. These don’t look phony to me,” she said of the two pieces now mounted on coral and marble pedestals in her home. The tribe, ultimately overrun by the Calusa Indians, had a presence in South Florida and the Keys from the third century BCE through 1794, when a Dutch cartographer noted the tribe on a map of this area. Unfortunately, there’s no way to date the art. According to archaeologist Dr. William Keegan of the University of Florida’s Florida Museum of Natural History, dating this type of artifact is very difficult. “Of course, there’s carbon in coral, but that doesn’t tell us when the art was made,” Keegan said. “The most common way we test something like this is by examining the organic material in the artifact, an organism that may have died when the art was being created.” And, because it wasn’t discovered during a controlled archaeological dig, it isn’t possible to date it from other materials found nearby. Keegan said he’s compared them to known Taino artifacts and the heads are definitely one-of-a-kind. “All we can do is base our conclusions on the information
There’s a first for everything, and these heads may be the first of their kind discovered in the Keys.
Diane Tyma points to an image of what she says is a similar coral head she found in the book, ‘Art and Archaeology of Pre-Columbian Cuba.’
that we have,” he said, “And the style isn’t quite right.” Keys historian and author Jerry Wilkinson is also intrigued by the heads. He said he will continue to work on authenticating the coral art, mentioned in the forward of his latest manuscript, which he said could have an Indian origin. “I’m not giving up. There’s a first for everything, and these
heads may be the first of their kind discovered in the Keys,” Wilkinson said. “We may not get the answer for two or three months. Or, it may be two or three decades. But we have to generate interest and get it out there.” Diane certainly isn’t giving up. She has an entire folder of well-thumbed documents relating to the mystery, including a 2000 email from Chief Ortiz from the Taino tribal affairs office. Ortiz wrote that after examining the photo, it appears to be Tekesta Taino origin. He said it resembled the image of “one of the four grandfathers of humanity, the Caracaracoels.” Ortiz also noted the face seemed badly weathered. Anyone who knows anything about the giant coral heads, or other artifacts in the surrounding area, should email dianetyma@comcast.net.

ON FIRE THIS WEEK The teams with the highest percentage of weight loss from April 11-18 are listed below. Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss the previous weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight-loss achieved over two weeks.

Recipe For a quick supper, look to these Italian-style stuffed peppers for inspiration. With just a few ingredients and less than 30 minutes, you can create a fresh, clean meal with more than 30 grams of protein! You'll be glad to know this satisfying gluten-free and Paleo dinner is under 300 calories per serving, making it a perfect light supper after an evening workout. Italian-Style Stuffed Peppers INGREDIENTS 2 bell peppers, halved and cleaned 1 Tbsp coconut oil ½ large onion, diced Sea salt and black pepper, to taste 4 cloves garlic, pressed or chopped ½ cup diced tomatoes, fresh or canned 1 pound ground turkey 6 basil leaves, finely chopped Extra basil leaves, for garnish
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place the bell pepper halves in a roasting dish face down for 10 to 15 minutes. (You can skip this step if you want to keep the peppers more firm or raw.) 2. While the bell peppers are cooking, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté the onions in coconut oil, adding sea salt and black pepper to taste, until they're translucent and slightly browned on the edges. Add the tomatoes and garlic, and simmer for about two minutes. 3. Add the meat, and cook until fully done. Taste the mixture, and adjust seasoning to your liking. Mix in the chopped basil. 4. Remove the peppers from the oven — they should be just a bit softened — and flip them over. Spoon the stuffing mixture into each one. You can go ahead and eat them at this point, or put them back in the oven for five to 10 minutes to allow the flavors of the bell pepper and the meat mixture to blend together more.

group of dedicated women in the Keys make sure every girl who needs a dress to wear to the dance, has one. In Marathon, visits to the “Success Closet” ramp up as prom season approaches. Hanging on a rack in Tina Belotti’s Marathon High School classroom, about 40 dresses are carefully cleaned and pressed, waiting to be chosen. They are long, short, big, small, simple and elaborate. All of them, however, are donated for the cause. More are needed. “For prom, we need the public to donate dressy shoes and smaller size dresses. For the boys, we need young men’s jackets, vests and bowties,” said volunteer Sherrie Taylor. Taylor spends about 15 to 20 hours a week organizing the closet at Marathon High School. She sorts ALL the donations — shorts, uniform polos, dresses, shoes and bags — by size and style and then manages to make them fit in the an 8 by 8 foot closet stacked floor to ceiling. The Success Closet has quarterly week-long events, and also special events, like prom shopping. “During our regular week long events, we serve about

And high heels!) to expand the offerings for Keys students. Another way for the public to contribute is by sponsoring a student’s accessories — new shoes, hair and nail appointments — for the prom. To donate, please contact Lori Denny or Tina Belotti at Marathon High School; Tami Dannacker at Key West High School; Alena McNew at Coral Shores High School; or Centennial Bank branches that collect dresses for Kids Come First. years old, grew out of the need to provide middle school students with garments that meet uniform code. The manpower is provided by student members of the Keys to Be the Change. Key West High School and Coral Shores High School have similar clothing programs. At Key West High School, teacher Tami Dannacker started “The Prom Closet” seven years ago with the help of Kids Come First. The closet not only has a variety of dresses, but also shoes, purses, bags, makeup and some items for the guys, too. “We have assisted hundreds of students throughout the years,” she said saying it’s not just open around prom time, but all year. “Anyone can come look. I have students come to me for job interviews and sweet 16s. If they need something, anything, we do our best to help them.” Items can be kept by the students, or returned for someone else to use in the future. Starting on May 2, students will be able to come to her room during lunch to look, try on, or take dresses. At Coral Shores High School, teacher Alena McNew’s Future Business Leaders of America club and Spanish club took on the task to set up a prom closet in her classroom. Prom is May 14 at Coral Shores and Marathon, and June 6 at Key West.

Derby hats, outfits should charm like a belle

I
t's time to dust off your fascinators, floppy hats and fedoras for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 7. The only way to watch the best two minutes in sports is to enjoy it with festive attire, mint juleps and friends. So it's time to pick out a hat, plan your most stylish outfit, and decide where to watch it! Kentucky Derby Hat In fashion, hats can inspire an entire outfit, influencing the color scheme worn as well as the way you wear your hair. For the Kentucky Derby, select your hat first to help you plan and coordinate the rest of your outfit. Opt for a large sun hat, a fascinator or a vintage hat. If the hats in your closet aren't quite cutting it, get creative and make your own. You'll need either a hat or a headband for your base, as well as embellishments such as flowers, feathers, bows and ribbons, and a hot glue gun and safety pins to help you adhere your designs. Styles can range from classy and fashionable to zainy, eyecatching headwear. Plan Your Outfit The Kentucky Derby takes on the style of a "Southern belle." Sundresses in bright spring hues and fun patterns such as floral or stripes are perfect for
this event. Before finalizing your dress, consider what your headpiece looks like. If your dress has a lot of pattern or color, you may want to choose a simple design for your hat. Likewise, if you choose a simple dress, you can opt for a big and bold fascinator! For men, classic linen, khaki or seersucker suits are the perfect attire for the Kentucky Derby. If this feels too dressy for your viewing plans, opt for a more casual look with a button down shirt in a fun color or pattern such as pink or gingham. Keep in mind, the preppier the better. Pair it with shorts, loafers, a bow tie and a fedora and you are all set. Watch the Derby Join your friends to watch the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 7. If you're not hosting your own viewing party, join me at oo-tray at 80900 Overseas Highway in Islamorada starting at 5 p.m. Oo-tray will be serving Kentucky Derby themed food and drinks, and will be giving out prizes for the best dressed and best hat. In addition, there will be a 50/50 raffle for betting on horses, live music and an Islamorada Derby where our local “Real Housewives of Islamorada” will race with horse sticks for charity benefiting the United Way of the Florida Keys. Call 305-922-2027 for more information. See you at the races!

Marathon High School produces famous Broadway musical this weekend By Sara Matthis
O
n Friday and Saturday, April 23-24, the Marathon High School drama club will be performing “Chicago.” Director Carrollyn Cox said it’s an ambitious undertaking. “The kids convinced me they could do it,” she said on Tuesday, backstage as the students readied for their first dress rehearsal. “And then they convinced our principal that they could do it in an appropriate manner. And they have. It’s going to be a great show.” Curtain is at 7 p.m. both nights and admission is $10. The plot line is a triple cross between Velma and Roxie, both accused of separate murders and housed on death row, and their lawyer, Billy Flynn. The women, both spotlight hungry
performers, try to out-do one another in the press and in convoluted legal strategy. Ethan Quagliano plays Billy, a slick lawyer not opposed to manipulating his clients, the jury or the press. “It’s an honor to perform this musical,” Ethan said. “Even people who don’t love Broadway have heard of this show.” Ethan’s stage presence is compelling, more so for it only being the senior’s second role — ever. He said he hopes to continue community theater locally and when he attends Florida Gulf Coast University. But it’s seniors Natalie Ehrig (Velma) and Claire McCarthy (Roxie) who steal the show with their smooth dance moves and strong vocals. Both students said they enjoy the opportunity to play a more mature role. “This isn’t a fairy tale character. Roxie is a bit of a bad girl,” said McCarthy, who will attend Florida State University in the fall. “It’s an edgier show. Plus, it’s my favorite musical,” said Ehrig, who said she doesn’t have a favorite version of “Chicago.” “I love them all for different reasons.”
Roxie (Claire McCarthy) speaks to a police officer (Michael Macko) over a corpse.
Hannah Gracy plays Katalin Hunyak in the famous musical.
The ‘Matron’ (Mackenzie Helms) tells it like it is. Page 20 • Upper Keys Weekly • April 22, 2016

Earlier this year, the Marathon High School drama club performed Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to wide acclaim. At the end of every school year, the drama club selects the next year’s productions based on available cast and then votes. Although the students shine on stage, it’s really a community production. Cox said the club had choreography help from both Marathon’s Ann Hart and former resident Laura Hutt. Drama “dads” help with set construction and club moms help sell concessions. “The kids do the rest,” said Cox.

Chamber event pleases crowd in more ways than one
T
his past Tuesday, members of the Islamorada business community sampled fine wines, grabbed some cash and perused fine jewelry at the monthly Business After Hours co-hosted by Centennial Bank and Blue Marlin Jewelry. “Its fun,” said Islamorada Chamber President Joe Roth regarding the Chamber’s events, like the after hours and luncheons that typically draw about 100 attendees. “Our membership enjoys the opportunity to network with their peers and I think there is a lot of benefit to that.” He adds that the recipe for the Chamber’s success is twofold. “We educate and advocate for our members very successfully. And we have a fantastic board, fantastic director and great staff. When you have all that going for you it translates to a great operation.”

y absolute favorite part of the Jet Ski tour happens on the backside of Key West, once we pass under the bridge to Fleming Key. Riders are instructed to follow the leader in a single file. Barefoot Billy’s takes a group of riders out for a complete clockwise revolution of Key West, the island. It starts from the beach at Casa Marina Resort, heads to Sunset Key and then through Key West Harbor. The tour leaders stop at various points to give the group some “insider” tidbits a la “Oprah used to live in that house.” This is when I would catch my breath. The tour continued through the backcountry (my favorite part! See the first paragraph) and then the Boca Chica channel. Back at the Casa Marina Resort I performed the most awkward dismount of a Jet Ski seen in some time in the lower United States. (“No, really. I’m fine. MHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK Faculty and students at Marathon High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly.
ANNIE GRACY
Marathon's Favorite Place to Party"
SOPHOMORE
What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? Band and soccer are the two things that have always been a presence in my life throughout high school. These activities have helped me to step out of my comfort zone and manage my time wisely.
Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? Mr. Rayhill, my band director, has helped me realize my passion for music, and is constantly pushing me to challenge myself to do things I never thought I would be able to accomplish. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Freshman English with Mr. Schubert. Coming into the class, I didn’t even know how difficult it would be. It gave me a taste of what an AP English class would look like and it has given me skills that I will utilize in the future. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? Today students are under much more pressure to succeed than the generations before them. It is critical for today’s young people to be able to solve the problems facing our future. What advice would you give to a freshman entering high school? I would advise younger students to pursue what they love whether it be art, music or sports, and get involved in something outside of class. Doing this will help keep you sane, and encourage you to meet new people with similar interests. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? There are many opportunities and conveniences that are available to most people on the mainland, but not accessible to us. Keys residents struggle with finding things to do on a regular basis, which sometimes leads to shenanigans. If you could advise the President of the United States on one thing, what would it be? Foreign relations are becoming increasingly important, and international diplomacy is integral in ensuring that the lives of American citizens are protected. I would advise the president to stand his ground when negotiation with international powers to promote American strength. What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend college, but I haven’t yet decided where my interests lie. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to be more cognizant of the world around me. Michael Allstead shakes up his own twist on the bay breeze at Courtyard Marriot.
Courtyard Marriott By Kristen Livengood
G
iving the vodka bay breeze a little twist, bartender Michael Allstead at Courtyard Marriott’s bayside bar makes his with coconut rum to make it special and a little different. “It’s a simple, tropical drink,” he said, adding that his magic touch is what makes it special. Hailing from Michigan, the newish arrival with a bar management and real estate background, Michael said he moved to the Keys for a change. His favorite part of the job is his new office view. “It’s just gorgeous here, and I get to meet a lot of nice people,” he said. “Everyone is always very friendly and the hotel environment is nice.” Allstead is glad the management and his co-workers let him be hands-on with drink making. Courtyard Marriott is working on a specialty menu for the poolside bar. When he isn’t working, he’s enjoying Keys life, spending time at the local beaches and testing out drinks at other tikis around town. “I’m never leaving,” he said. The Courtyard Marriott is located at 2146 Overseas Highway on the West end of town. The tiki is located poolside, of course.

KEYS DISEASE
2016 is a bad year for musicians But the music will live on…
2
016 continues to be a bad year for musicians. Consider for a moment all we have lost this year: David Bowie. Glenn Frey (Eagles). Rocketman. Paul Kantner (Jefferson Starship). Maurice White (Earth Wind & Fire). Dan Hicks. Sir George Martin. Frank Sinatra, Jr. Thunderclap Newman. Gato Barbieri. Merle Haggard. Jimmie Van Zant. And now, Prince. Prince Rogers Nelson was only 57 when he died on Thursday at his Paisley Park complex in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Although no cause of death was given, sources at press time reported that he was battling a bad case of the flu. Just last week, his plane had to make an emergency landing because of his illness. He had completed an arena tour earlier this year. Very few people in the music business are as talented and gifted as Prince. He was the complete package — the real deal. Equal parts James Brown and Jimi Hendrix, Prince could sing, play (multiple instruments), dance, and command the stage like few others. He could rock out, funk with the best, and sing a soulful ballad — all within the same show. He wrote and recorded his own songs, often playing all the instruments and singing all the vocals. He wrote several songs that turned out to be big hits for other artists, many of whom he produced at his Paisley Park studios. Some of those songs were huge hits: “Manic Monday” (The Bangles), “I Feel For You”
(Chaka Khan), “Nothing Compares 2 U” (Sinead O’Connor). And his catalog of his own hits is legendary, complete with songs like: “Little Red Corvette,” “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Kiss,” “1999,” and of course, “Purple Rain.” He fought for the rights of musicians and composers, protesting a bad deal he had with a record company by abandoning his own name and becoming a mystical glyph symbol (until the bad contract expired). In taking control of his own music and career, he showed many musicians who followed how to ensure that they didn’t get screwed by the labels and music business sycophants who bleed musicians and artists dry. He starred in the semiautobiographical “Purple Rain” movie (with accompanying album) way back in 1984, and it appeared that he hadn’t aged
a day since. Seriously, as most of us who are in our middle 50s can attest, we don’t look like we did when we were in our 20s. But Prince never aged, and if anyone was going to live forever, it was likely the Purple One. Even so, 57 is far too youngb… and if it turns out to be the flu, how sad will that be? As the New York Times wrote, “In Prince’s biggest hits, he sang passionately, affectionately and playfully about sex and seduction. With deep bedroom eyes and a sly, knowing smile, he was one of pop’s ultimate flirts. But elsewhere in his catalog were songs that addressed social issues and delved into mysticism and science fiction. He made himself a unifier of dualities — racial, sexual, musical, cultural — teasing at them in songs like ‘Controversy’ and transcending them in his career.” If nothing else, the musician
deaths of 2016 certainly reinforce the irrefutable fact that life truly is short, and that we don’t have all the time in the world. Some of the times I treasure most are when I am making music for an appreciative audience. Other times certainly include those spent listening to good music, and the inspiration that comes when a particular song touches my heart and soul. Prince was responsible for more than a few of those inspirational
moments in my life, along with many of the others who passed away this year. I can’t say rest in peace, because it’s hard to imagine the Purple One at rest. So I hope Prince parties like it’s 1999 along with one hell of a band of players and singers who departed the blue planet earlier this year. Thank you for the music.
To our BUYERS and SELLERS. We hope you enjoy your new homes.

Can you tell who’s wearing the hearing aid?
(Don’t worry. Neither can anyone else.) When it comes to hearing care, discover why your friends and neighbors trust Hear 4 U. For over ten years, Floridians have trusted Dr. Michelle Couture-Souvenir to provide them with superior hearing care and service. Offering affordable, powerful, and virtually invisible hearing instruments, Hear 4 U can help you hear clearly again without breaking the bank. If you’ve noticed your hearing isn’t quite the same as it used to be, call Hear 4 U today to schedule a complimentary hearing screening. Together we can take a risk-free look at your hearing, determine if hearing care is needed, and make a plan to help you hear the way you want to again. Don’t settle for hearing less. Call today to schedule your appointment. Page 40 • Marathon Weekly • April 22, 2016

Former Islamorada Village Mayor Dave Boerner discusses wastewater funding with Clerk of Court candidate Kevin Madok. After a six-year absence from local politics, Boerner recently filed paperwork to return to the Village’s dais. The occasion was a recent business after hours co-hosted by Centennial Bank and Blue Marlin Jewelry. For more, see page 24. JASON KOLER/Keys Weekly.
