LOCAL CHATTER By Gabriel Sanchez The longest running sports event in the United States, the Kentucky Derby, is set for Saturday, May 7. Since 1875 the derby has maintained its place in American lore, giving us majestic horses, timehonored traditions, and rightfully earning its reputation as “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” Often we associate images of large fashionable hats, roaring commentary, and the familiar taste of mint juleps. But more than half the fun of watching the Derby is cheering on the oddly, and sometimes humorously, named horses. So, we asked ...

What would you name a racehorse?

ALEX JOHNSON, bartender at Sunset Grille and Raw Bar, would pay homage to his family in choosing the name Comanche. “My father’s first horse was named Comanche, who loved roaming the 400 acres of his property,” Alex said. “My family’s history is rooted in the Mohawk Indians up north.”

ED TORELLA, a winner in the Marathon Meltdown weight-loss challenge, is headed for the Kentucky Derby right now. For realz. Before he left, he said he would name his horse “Jer-Con-Ed” — a combination of the teammate names Jerry, Connie and Ed. The trio took home the grand prize. See page 14 for more details.

KARLA ARGUETA would name her horse Crescendo. “In a musical piece the crescendo is the high point of the piece, which is essentially the climax of the song,” she said.

GUNS IN THE KEYS A look at concealed weapons permits and the safety of officers By Hays Blinckmann

G

uns, whether you are for or against them, they exist almost everywhere in the continental United States. Over the past decade in the Florida Keys, more and more guns have entered our news, our stores and our lives across the board. No longer does the use of the word “gun” or “shooting” come solely associated with nefarious behavior of criminals on the mainland. From housewives to tourists, people are packing all up and down the island chain; and with that, instances and choices that can affect the quality of life and safety of our residents. The Florida Keys presently sport three gun ranges (two public, one private), and five gun shops. But many small businesses and private citizens also have FFL’s (Federal Firearm License) where guns can be sold from businesses or homes. Monroe County has 8,120 concealed weapons permits as of March 31, 2016, according to the Department of Agriculture statistics, which is the highest per capita for a county in Florida. About 10 percent of Florida Keys residents are able

to legally walk around with a gun on their person, concealed. (In the Keys, there is no “open carry” law that allows gun owners to display their weapon, for instance, in a hip holster.) Residents and law enforcement have noticed an uptick in crime involving guns in the Keys. (See sidebar). And the national news stories surrounding “stand your ground” challenges on the street and in the courtroom have made their way into Keys living rooms as matters of debate. Some support an individual’s right to protect themselves under a threat or perceived threat, while others worry what will become of society when individuals can brandish weapons at inappropriate times. Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsey and Key West Chief Donie Lee have a lot of insight into what affects gun owners and their choices concerning lawful and unlawful activity. According to Sheriff Ramsey and Chief Lee, the majority of concealed weapons permit holders rarely commit crimes. Most violent criminal activity with a gun involves career criminals with the intent to do harm. But there are the other instances, when people make bad choices. “The shooting on Duval Street is a perfect example. My understanding is that he had a concealed carry permit from another state. He was intoxicated and had a firearm, and made a very dangerous, bad choice which had serious consequences,” said Chief Lee. Sheriff Ramsey has seen a rise in anger and gun usage in the general population especially with road rage and any situation that involves alcohol. “People are acting without thinking, and the majority of time, here in the Keys, the

I believe that as a nation we need to enact common sense gun safety regulations: Mandatory training, mental health checks, and other precautions to ensure public safety. Gun ownership is an individual choice, and there is a lot that goes into that decision. — Key West Police Chief Donie Lee

problem is with alcohol,” said Sheriff Ramsey. “Guns with alcohol, nothing good comes of it. If you are going to drink, leave your gun at home.” Sheriff Ramsey said he is against the idea of open carry laws, but a proponent for lawful gun ownership as a safety measure for our society. Florida Law states that “discharging a firearm or possessing it loaded in hand, while under the influence of alcohol, any prohibited substance, or prescribed medication is a violation of the law.” Also, carrying a concealed weapon — even with a permit — is forbidden in places such as bars, schools, career centers, hospitals, government buildings, “places of nuisance,” prisons, police stations, and polling places. “At least, with a permit, we know who these people are, and they’re law abiding. There’s a whole criminal element who carry firearms and don’t have permits, and these people most certainly pose a threat. That’s why continuous training of police officers is crucial. And that level of caution is why police often get a bad rap for being overzealous,” according to Chief Lee. The number of concealed weapons permits in the Keys, as well as tourists passing through who might also be carrying, have absolutely made police officers more cautious and aware. Keys police officers operate under a “mandatory wear” policy, meaning at all times on-duty officers must wear bullet proof vests. Also, since 2005, Key West police officers have had dash cams and as of 2015, they wear body cameras. Page 4 • Upper Keys Weekly • April 29, 2016

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Applause! Applause! Bravo to the Marathon High School Drama Club! Friday and Saturday night, 38 students put on the award-winning musical "Chicago," which blew us away. Led by director Carrollyn Cox, and some additional adults, help the students created the set, costumes, lighting, sound and choreography which required team work and commitment. Together, crew and actors presented a fabulous show. Some of the actors will be moving on to further their education. We wish them good luck in their new endeavors and we are looking forward to seeing the remaining students involved in great future productions. Marathon should be very proud of this wonderful group of students. Special thanks to Carrollyn Cox and all involved in taking on and executing this challenging, exciting show. About delegates Although I am not a Trump supporter I agree with my friend Danny Coll's April 22 letter that it is strange that although Donald Trump won all 99 of the Florida delegates, none of those 99 delegates will necessarily be a Trump supporter even though they will be legally bound to vote for Trump on the first three ballots (if it goes that far). I would advocate a statutory change that the delegates should be selected not by the party, but by the campaign committee of the candidate who won the primary. This seems only logical. However, given that the Legislature is run by legislators presumably beholden to the parties, I would concede that such a change is as likely as a blizzard in Key West in August. Tim Gratz Key West

t’s called a staged musical reading, but it’s a collection of wonderful songs with simple, yet fluent, spoken lines that tie the whole story together. ‘Taking My Turn’ is a collection of songs and stories about aging — the aches and pains, sex after 60, broken dreams, but also coming into your own with the time to pursue simple pleasures. It’s an award-winning musical originally conceived and adapted by Robert H. Livingston with music by Gary William Friedman and lyrics by Will Holt. The show opened this week and will run through Sunday, May 8 with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and ending with a special matinee on the final Sunday. Curtain is at 8 p.m. In Marathon, the theater selected two young and talented directors to direct the cast

of four mature men and four mature women. Devin Clarke and Jenn Mixon-Eick said the production will resonate with everybody. “When you listen to other people’s stories about aging — the trials and tribulations and joys — you can connect with them,” said Clarke. This is the fourth and last mainstage production of the 2015/2016 season, a revival from about 10 years ago when it was performed by a different ensemble. As the youngest

member of the cast, Jim “Boomer” Kelly said they were able to make some clever changes to “I Never Made Money From Music” so the number makes sense. “I play the part of Charles, a retired railroad steward, who chose a ‘safe’ 9 to 5 job,” Kelly said. In the original score, the singer was African American who could have played with Louis Armstrong. “But we changed it around so I could have played trombone with Peter Cetera of Chicago.” Marilyn Tempest sings “In April,” a touching tribute to her (fictional) deceased son. “I don’t care who you are, if you’re sitting in the audience, you’re going to be crying before she’s finished,” Kelly said. The cast sings many songs as an ensemble, but each vocalists has a chance to shine including George Lancaster with “In the House,” Heidi Ferrel with “Vivaldi,” John Hunt with “The Kite,” The Weekly’s Lesley Aaron with “I Am Not Old,” Mike Chaplin with “It Still Isn’t Over,” and Cathy Supp with “Two of Me.” For co-director Mixon-Eick, it’s a hard choice between the “I Like It’ and “Pick More Daisies.” “I find myself singing those songs as I am driving myself home after rehearsal,” she said, laughing. This isn’t the first time Mixon-Eick and Clarke have codirected a show. She said he’s an artistic genius. “He’s absolutely a creative genius. He’s got a great, young mind and fresh ideas,” she said. Clarke is just as appreciative of his co-director. “We work really well together. She really helps the actors understand their character and motivation,” he said. The show is dedicated to the memory of Bill Ross. The active theater member passed recently.

Every day is Earth Day for these guys Crew hopes to bring twice monthly cleanups to Keys beaches By Kristen Livengood

T

ramping through the remote backwoods and mangroves of Grassy Key, Kendall Klay and Douglas Hattendorf and a few volunteers pulled 4,000 pounds of trash caught in the roots of the hammock to be disposed of properly. They did it because they had a little extra time and wanted to make a difference. “This isn’t our garbage, we didn’t put it here,” Klay said of the debris piled up from faraway lands and offshore boats. “But, now it belongs to us because it landed on our beaches, our islands.” The two met at this year’s Marathon Seafood Festival in March and hit it off with much common ground between them — both raised on Grassy Key, both with a passion for preserving the precious resources of the Florida Keys. Klay runs a charter boat and kayaking company, Keys To The Keys Adventures, and Hattendorf runs MamaOcean. Hattendorf has been pulling trash off Grassy Key beaches and roads since the ‘90s. “I’m on a mission and I’m not stopping,” said Hattendorf, who adopted MM 56-58 in Grassy Key and is constantly picking up trash along the roadside two to four bags at a time — enough that he doesn’t go over his home’s trashcan quota. “I’ve brought in about 20,000 pounds of trash since August.”

Before and after of the cleanup area. Klay and MamaOcean will be taking boats with kayaks and volunteers to Grassy Key to continue the efforts.

Klay and Hattendorf — with the help of Kurly’s Coffee, Promotions Guy, Marathon Garbage Service, Winn Dixie and an army of volunteers — hope to clean the beaches again on Monday, May 2 leaving the docks at 10 a.m. They will be supplying boats to the area, kayaks and paddleboards, gloves and trash bags, and an after-the-cleanup cookout. The public is encouragd to attend. Meet at Keys To The Keys Adventure’s dock located at 11699 Overseas Highway, Marathon by Vaca Cut. In May, they plan an underwater (scuba) clean up of the Tom’s Harbor Bridge area.

Klay has been keeping a small island off Stirrup Key clean for years, and when he mentioned this to Hattendorf, Hattendorf said he’d show him a spot where the trash gathered on the beach, pushed into the mangroves by high tides and was trapped. “We are trying to set an example of what a couple people can do,” said Klay standing beside mountains of trash bags, waiting to be loaded into dumpsters donated by Marathon Garbage Service. “We don’t have a lot of resources, but look what we can accomplish.” They pulled ropes, toothbrushes, water and fuel jugs, cans and bottles, broken plastics, chum boxes and bottle caps galore out of the mangrove area. “It was about 99 percent plastics we cleaned up, because it floats,” said Klay. “And, it lays down a path of destruction all the way, taking out wildlife along its journey.” Klay hopes to raise money to cleanup different Keys areas two times a month and really hopes other charter boat captains will call him and chip in their boats and time, too. “I hope I can get some support so we can continue doing this,” said Klay. “We want people to see it, I don’t think most locals really know how bad it is back there.” For more information about the cleanup, call Klay at 409443-8850 or visit mamaocean. com. FISHING

Grouper season has its pluses and minuses Local grouper season reopens May 1

Charter mate Kyle Franz of Main Attraction has been fishing grouper for years. Last year, he reeled in this 39-pound snowy grouper from 650 feet of water on Florida Keys Reel Adventures with friend Kevin Johnsen.

rouper season is closed in Monroe County waters from January 1 through April 30 each year with an anticipated opening on May 1. The closure, which started in 2010, has been said to be good for the grouper stocks, but also a pain to some charter and commercial fishermen. “Catching grouper is great the first few days, but then three days in, it’s back to normal,” said Ryon Logan, the charter captain of Cheerio out of Hurricane Hole Marina on Stock Island, who is not a fan of the closures, saying it hurts local charter and commercial fishermen. “May is our busiest month anyway,” he said with tarpon, sailfish and dolphin fishing happening at the same time. “It’s a terrible system to target the fish and then flood the market.” Grouper fishing from a boat typically involves baits fished near the bottom, with heavy tackle and line to bring grouper to the surface. Last year, Charter Captain Chris Mendola of Far Out Charters in Key West suggested live bait for the best bites, like pinfish, grunts and blue runners. Some also like to get in the water and try their hand at hunting down their tasty meals with a speargun. Logan said there were a lot more grouper on the reef 10 years ago than there are now,

but says other things can attribute to the grouper’s numbers, like weather patterns and more. He’s been fishing these waters for the past 15 years professionally as a commercial fisherman and a charter boat owner. Fishermen target gags and blacks longer than 24-inches total length and reds at 20-inches total length or more. Scamps and snowys can be found on deeper Keys wrecks. Warsaw, Nassau, and goliath grouper harvest is prohibited year round. Recreational fishermen can’t have more than three grouper on their boat per person and can only have one black or one gag per person, i.e. a black grouper and two reds, or a gag grouper and two reds,

but not a black, a gag and a red. Middle Keys resident Kyle Franz has charters lined up on Main Attraction out of Key Colony Beach for the opening of grouper season. “We usually anchor at the reef and on wrecks and fish with yellowtail,” he said. Franz is a former commercial fisherman who made the switch to charter trips a few years ago. “We have a couple spots lined up where we’ve been catching two or three grouper a day that we throw back.” Franz said he will personally be targeting snowys and blueline tiles in the deeper water, which have also been closed and reopen on May 1. If the closures were up to Logan, he said he would return to the former two-month closure that reopened on March 1, or a closure that would reopen in September when season is slow. He noted that the grouper spawn is during the current closures, but suggested a quota per boat like kingfish and amberjack. “It would keep the price higher for the fishermen,” he said. Logan did say that the fisheries did do a good job by lowering the limits. “That’s probably been the biggest help of all,” he said. More information about seasons and closures in Monroe County can be found at myfwc. com.

he Ocean Three team lost a combined 20.30 percent of their combined weight during the 16-week Marathon Meltdown weight loss challenge. Connie Ridley lost 44.5 pounds (25.95 percent); Jerry Ridley lost 57.5 pounds (26.02 percent); and Ed Torella lost 32 pounds (11.96 percent). So, who’s idea was it to join Marathon Meltdown? Ed and Jerry literally point their index fingers at Connie. “I’m always looking for some type of program come January,” she said. “I talked my husband into it, and then we talked our neighbor into it.” The three rode their bicycles together, walked together and even participated in the Sombrero Beach Run. Jerry did quite a bit of running, in fact. “It’s a balance. I learned that you have to be vigilant about Page 14 • Marathon Weekly • April 29, 2016

what you can consume. If you drink a little or eat a little more than you should, you got to burn it off the next day,” Jerry said. Connie said she gave up carbs, sugars, coffee creamer and artificial sweeteners. “And I took all of the candy out of the bowl on the coffee table and replaced it with almonds,” she said. Week after week, the pounds melted off. Some weeks, the ounces and pounds were a little more stubborn than others. “We hit plateaus,” said Ed. The trio was not able to attend the final awards party on April 27. But here’s what they won: the $1,000 grand prize for top team with the most percentage of weight loss; Connie and Jerry also won an additional $250 each for top man and top woman; and all three of the team members won a free oneweek membership to Keys Strength and Conditioning for placing in the top 10 individual weight loss. Connie and Jerry are part-time Marathon residents, spending the rest of their time in Twin Falls, Idaho. They can’t return to the Keys until the last Boise State University football game is over sometime in late November or early December. Ed, meanwhile, is on his way to the Kentucky Derby in his RV. No doubt, he’ll return to his home in Marathon with another fistful of winnings.

Bartender Molly shakes up a paradise punch at Nowhere Bar and Grill.

Nowhere Bar and Grill

Spend the Whole Weekend On Our Oceanfront Pool Deck & Have Fun at Our Poolside Tiki Bar!

By Kristen Livengood

T

he menu steals the show at Nowhere Bar and Grill with items like gumbo and jambalaya, but the paradise punch made by bartender Molly Acey shares the spotlight. Made with passionfruit rum, Southern Comfort, amaretto, fruit juices and grenadine with a Black Strap floater, the drink tops the specialty drink menu with a Molly Acey twist. “I like to add the floater,” she said. “It adds the perfect touch to an already delicious drink.” It’s garnished with a cherry and orange slice. Another favorite of hers is the espresso martini, made with espresso flavored liquor instead of the coffee, so it won’t keep tasters up all night. She said her favorite part of working at Nowhere is the staff and the owners. “They make it a pleasure to come to work,” she said. Acey moved to the Keys four months ago from Washington and is a seasonal resident of Marathon. “I love the tropics and spent the last three winters in Central America, coming to the Keys allowed me to bring my dog down,” she said, adding that she will be in town until June. When she isn’t working, she is out exploring and kayaking the backcountry. Nowhere Bar and Grill is located 11399 Overseas Highway in Marathon.

Konrath named to FHSAA Academic All-State Team Marathon graduate receives prestigious scholarship By Gabriel Sanchez

R

ecently, the Florida High School Athletics Association announced its 2016 Academic AllState Team, naming Marathon’s Sydney Konrath as one of its 24 students selected. Selection is meant to recognize students who “exemplify the true meaning of the term student-athlete by excelling academically, performing athletically, and investing into the community.” Throughout the state, 24 students are selected — 12 boys and 12 girls. The group of students will receive $40,000 in various scholarships. Konrath’s 4.0 GPA, involvement in various organizations and school related committees, and more than 344 hours of volunteer community service qualified her for the scholarship. “I feel very honored,” said Konrath. “My parents pushed me to put grades first, and I’m glad it paid off. MHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK Faculty and students at Marathon High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly.

SHANNON PITCHFORD

FRESHMAN

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? During the fall, I am part of the MHS swim team. And I recently became involved with the drama program. Both have helped me have fun and make new friends throughout the year.

MARINA FOR SALE!

Amazing opportunity to own a mixed-use commercial/residential property ideally located on the ocean side of Marathon in the "heart of the Florida Keys.” Located less than 100 miles from both Havana and Miami, this property’s potential is unlimited. $3,995,000

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? My biology teacher Ms. Maschal has helped me a lot. Not only my teacher and coach, she is also a friend and she has worked hard to help me in school and out of school. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? My AP Human Geography course has taught me so much and will be important for college. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? There is a much greater level of acceptance in today’s society. No one should feel they have to hide who they really are or what they want to be.

FEATURES INCLUDE:

•3/2, 1456 sq. ft. stilted, single family home •11 individual slips that can accommodate up to 50ft boats. •Income generating: all 11 slips currently rented •Direct deep water access to Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. •More than half an acre of land (28,900 sq. ft.) •More than a quarter of an acre of bay bottom (11,761 sq. ft.)

What advice would you give to a freshman entering high school? Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. What movie character do you most identify with or would most like to be? I am a HUGE Disney fan, so I’ll go with Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” which has been my favorite movie since I was a baby. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Pollution is a problem that definitely hurts the Keys. Creating more outlets for recycle and more clean-up organizations are important for maintaining the environment and all who call it home. If you could advise the President of the United States on one thing, what would it be? Our internal affairs are just as important as our external affairs. We can’t work together as the “Un-United States of America.” What are your plans after high school? I want to follow in my parents’ footsteps and possibly go into the marine science field. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … in order to appreciate what you have, you have to work hard for it.

A

fter a one-year hiatus due to construction on the No Name bridge span, 116 kids came out to test their fishing savvy skills on the Old Wooden Bridge during the fishing tournament of the same name. The kids caught everything from a 60-inch tarpon to 33-inch needle guards and tons of pinfish, grunts, and more. The annual event yields kids’ fishing rods, bait, lunch and tons of prizes for the participants. — Weekly Staff report KRISTEN LIVEGNOOD/Keys Weekly

R

oger Jokela’s personal journey to the Keys started at age 15 when he heard Jimmy Buffet’s “Coconut Telegraph” for the first time. He bought a guitar and started to teach himself the art of songwriting. After graduating college with a degree in journalism, he immediately took off for Nashville where he said he received his “musical education.” A large part of his musical style is rooted in the Texas music scene, however, and includes the influence of musicians such as Lyle Lovett, Merle Haggard, Jim Croce, George Strait, and Bob Wills. In the 18 years in Tennessee, Roger’s song writing talent was honed. Eventually, a fellow band mate began telling Jokela about the Florida Keys and its emerging music scene and persisted that Jokela would be a good fit. Af-

ter two years of nagging, Roger finally gave in and decided to see it for himself. “I called back home to Nashville and told my boss I quit. I packed up what I needed, and moved down with only the hope of my music being enough to support myself,” said Jokela on a recent evening while on a break between sets. No worries. His original song, “The Dog Song,” got local play on the radio only 10 days after moving to the Keys. Kehl, who works at Sparky’s Landing, heard it. “My favorite song is Jokela’s ‘The Dog Song,’” she said. Jokela’s creativity and quirky song writing are a good fit with Keys audiences. (Check out “Flip Flop Feeling.”) Now, four years in, he said, “I’m sure this is the last move I will make in my life. I’ve loved meeting so many interesting and cool people here.” Jokela, 51, sports a uniquely decorated guitar. Brightly colored tiles cover the guitar face, and it features a conveniently placed cup holder. “I originally

Roger Jokela’s special beer bottle holder on his glittery guitar keeps the libation nestled near his heart, next to the music.

I would have never imagined five years ago I could be sitting on a barstool playing music for a living. — Roger Jokela

came up with the idea after playing in Mexico with my mentor, Doug Byers. We would always play guitar and drink beer in the sand, and often the sand that stuck to my beer would get all over my guitar,” he said, laughing. “This beer holder has saved my back a lot of wear and tear.” Catch Jokela serenading patrons at Sparky’s Landing on Tuesday and Saturday, and Tarpon Creek on Sunday. He also plays Salty Angler and Pincher’s Crab Shack in Key West. Check out his song list at rogerjokela. com. Page 30 • Upper Keys Weekly • April 29, 2016

KEYS DISEASE

Tipping is not a city in china A guide to taking care of your servers and saving your soul

I

have been meaning to write this column for a long time now. It's just that every time I started, something else happens that makes me write about that certain something else. But no more! Here we go… People who don't leave tips for their servers are simply not nice people. Neither are people who under tip. Working as a musician in bars and restaurants, I see all types of people. And I truly believe that most people, given the benefit of the doubt, are really nice people underneath. But if people go out to eat at restaurants, or drink in bars, there is something they should know as a matter of fact: Service is not included in the price of the check. I know that it is included in some countries or establishments, or if you bring a party of six or more, but as a general rule of thumb, your service is not included in any check you get in these United States. According to the website nolo.com, "Florida law allows employers to claim a tip credit. The tip credit is $3.02 an hour, which means Florida employers may pay tipped employees as little as $5.03 an hour in 2015. However, if this lower minimum wage plus the tips the employee actually earns don’t add up to at least the full state minimum wage, the employer must make up the difference." Simply put, the restaurant can pay its waitstaff and servers under the minimum wage because the servers depend upon tips for the bulk of their income. And working with local servers, I hear their horror stories on a daily and weekly basis. People who drive up in their Escalades or Maseratis often are the crappiest tippers of all. A typical example shared with me recently involved a large group of people, enjoying happy hour-priced eats and drinks, who proceeded to leave a three dollar tip on a $127 tab. That is just pathetic. And it cost that server money to wait on that party of cheap people. Let me explain – servers are required to tip out their barPage 33 • Marathon Weekly • April 29, 2016

tenders after their shift. It cost that server more to tip out his bartender then he made in tips from the cheap people who left the three dollars on the large tab. In case you haven't noticed, this is not an inexpensive place in which to live. The cost-of-living is higher here than in practically every other part of the state of Florida, and your server depends on the tip income he or she receives to make his or her living. If you don't leave a decent tip – usually around 20 percent – then you have stolen. You are a thief. You have not paid for services rendered. You have taken bread off of someone else's table. And you are not a nice person. Before you get all torqued off on why you're not leaving an appropriate tip for bad service, try to remember a few things:

your server does not cook your food and is not responsible for the taste of your dinner. Your server JOHN may be BARTUS handling is a City Council too many member and a tables former Mayor of the because of City of Marathon. overcrowdJohn is also a musician who performs ing or around town at understaffvarious establishing. Many ments. things that happen that may make your dinner out less then perfect are beyond the control of your server. Yet it's usually the server who has to pay the price, literally out of his

or her own pocket. There was a quote uttered by Steve Martin in the movie My Blue Heaven: "I don't believe in tipping. I believe in overtipping!" That is right up there with my favorite movie quotes of all time. Please remember that a person who is not nice to his server is generally not

a nice person. And if you see yourself in these paragraphs, it may not be too late to change and save your soul. If the roles were reversed, and you had to take care of your demanding little behind, wouldn't you like to get a nice tip for all your efforts? And if after all of this, you simply cannot bring yourself to leave a decent tip, then do everyone a favor and just stay home with a frozen pizza and your remote control.
