WELCOME TO THE BIGGEST SHOPPING EVENT OF THE YEAR

Welcome to the shopping extravaganza. More than 400 vendor booths have set up on the Founders Park grounds for the two-day Keys Deck & Dock Supply Gigantic Nautical Market.

Presented by the Pool Spa Billiard Store, the 30th running of the Gigantic Nautical Market is the signature fundraiser for the Upper Keys Rotary Club. Back and better than ever, vendors from the Sunshine State and other parts of the U.S. have a little bit of everything for adults and kids to check out and buy. Wander the aisles of vendors and you’ll find the latest boating and fishing products, apparel that’ll protect you from the beating sun, arts and crafts and comfy outdoor furniture, among other items.

Alongside the shopping is the boat show by the beach. And there’s also a food truck rally featuring all sorts of fare, from pizza and Mexican to Greek and sweet treats. Most of all, don’t miss the mobile drink stations, with ice-cold brews and seltzers and the infamous Bloody Mary booths (check the map on pages 16-17).

Proceeds from the Gigantic Nautical Market benefit local students – those who are continuing their educational journeys in colleges and technical schools as well as this year’s seniors at Coral Shores. Flip through the program and read some testimonials from students who’ve excelled thanks to financial support from the Upper Keys Rotary Foundation.

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m and Sunday, Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WHERE: Founders Park, MM 87, bayside, Islamorada.

“We are ecstatic to bring the biggest shopping event of the year to Islamorada for the 30th year,” said Upper Keys Rotarian Frank Derfler. “Our job of bringing the community and visitors together with the vendors benefits the students to the tune of $200,000 each year. That’s $2.5 million paid to about 250 students at about 30 universities and schools.”

“We are unique in that we provide a much larger percentage of our awards to students already in higher education or technical training,” Derfler said. “We’ve had some spectacular success with technical schools; we supported aircraft maintenance training, diesel and marine engine maintenance, law enforcement, paramedic, EMT and other valuable technical training.”

Proceeds from the event also provide $40,000 to $50,000 to Take Stock in Children each year. That money is matched by the Florida Legislature and stays in Monroe County.

PARK HERE: Coral Shores High School, MM 89.9, oceanside. Shuttle runs continuously both days. It’s the best way to get to the event. The last bus run is 5:15 p.m. on Saturday and 3:15 on Sunday.

ENTER HERE: Southwest end of the park at the fire station or the main entrance to Founders Park. Suggested admission is $5 for ages 17 and up (cash and credit cards accepted). Funds support scholarships.

FOOD: Twenty food trucks and various drink stations are located throughout the park. Find them on pages 16-17 and 22.

ROTARY? WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

Strolling through the park grounds and sifting through this program guide, you may ask yourself, “Where are drink booths?” Or “where is my favorite vendor?” Those answers can be found in the middle of this program. But questions may arise over Rotary and “What exactly is it?” We figured we’d let fellow Upper Keys Rotarians answer the question.

Mary Beth Harris, Centennial Bank business development officer

I was raised on the values of "Service Above Self” and the Rotary Four-Way Test. I am blessed to live in the Keys and be part of the Upper Keys Rotary Club, where every day is an opportunity to make our community better for future generations.

Rich Russell, Coral Shores High School athletics

While I thoroughly enjoy the food and fellowship we share each Tuesday, what matters more is the opportunity to "make a difference." Collectively, we give our time, talent and treasure, hoping to create a meaningful impact in our community and beyond. I think we all find it very gratifying.

Terry Abel, Islamorada fire chief

I love giving back to the community and Rotary gives me a force multiplier of like-minded folks to make it happen.

Judy Hull, Islamorada Chamber of Commerce

Being part of this global organization, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, allows me to contribute to impactful initiatives, such as the Gigantic Nautical Market, which supports scholarships for local students. It's fulfilling to know that my efforts, even something as simple as working at a beer booth, can make a significant difference in sending a kid to college.

GIGANTIC NAUTICAL MARKET INSIDER TIPS

Tens of thousands of visitors will enter the gates during the two-day Gigantic Nautical Market at Founders Park in Islamorada. Awaiting their arrival are hundreds of vendors, as well as local student volunteers and an army of Rotarians devoting their time at the bus stops, front gates and on park grounds at drink booths.

Here are some fun facts. Event attendance in recent years has topped 25,000 over the two-day Gigantic Nautical Market. More than 50% of the attendees are from outside Florida (we get a lot of visitors from New Jersey and Michigan) and more than three-quarters of the attendees are from outside the Florida Keys. Most people often say they plan their Keys vacations around the Gigantic Nautical Market.

Whether you’re new or a seasoned individual to this event, there are tips to effectively work your way through the Gigantic Nautical Market. Are you curious where drink stations or the ATMs are located? Or, perhaps you’re seeking your favorite vendor. And hey, where are the bathrooms? We have you covered.

Cash or card?

Three ATMs are available: one at the southwest gate entrance, the second toward the front of the great lawn next to booth 188 and the third next to booth 123. Those wishing to donate to Rotary can do so by credit card at the front gates and at the beverage stations.

Finding the bathrooms

Porta potties are located throughout the park. The bathroom facility at the beach tends to be busy. Try visiting the facility across from the tennis courts and at the front of the park across from the Chamber of Commerce building.

Refilling water bottles

Find water stations at the tennis courts, restrooms near the amphitheater, at the aquatic center, pickleball courts, basketball court/soccer fields, near the outdoor fitness park and beach restroom.

Dogs are welcome, but beware of hot blacktop!

Leashed dogs are welcome to join you at the event. If the sun is shining on a hot day, know that the blacktop will be scorching hot for your furry friend’s paws.

I could also win money? Why, yes! Scan the QR code to enter yourself into the 50/50.

Any other questions?

CORAL SHORES GRAD SARA BEELER IS AT THE HEAD OF AI

Ten years ago, Coral Shores high school student Sara Beeler starred in videos promoting this Gigantic Rotary event. Recently, we heard that she is doing “interesting things.” We threw some questions hoping to catch up with our video star.

What did you do after Coral Shores High School? I graduated from Florida State University and went to work in an office in Melbourne. In 2022, I moved back to Tavernier to move closer to family during the transition to remote work after COVID. I love the opportunity to reside in the community that raised me.

What do you do for work? I am the senior supervisor of the enterprise artificial intelligence team at a leading aerospace and defense company. Leading a team of artificial intelligence engineers, my role involves creating a strategy for using generative AI to meet the company’s business goals.

Is that what you expected you would be doing when you left Coral Shores High School or Florida State? What were your plans? No, it is not what I expected to be doing. That’s the beauty of it. As Coral Shores senior class president, I gave a speech saying, "It is okay not to know what you want to do with your life. In reality, no one does. We just make a choice and decide later if we like it. We can choose a new route if the original path does us no favors." I continue to live by this philosophy.

After my first year at FSU, I needed to choose a major. I looked at the common options. Then I thought, "How about option 4 — information technology? It seems like a stable career field — let's give it a shot." Little did I realize that this choice would pave the way for three unforgettable years filled with impactful courses, encounters with exceptional professors who would mold my professional identity, and the support of a college deeply invested in its students' success and readiness for the future.

After I graduated from Florida State, I was fortunate to get into a leadership rotational program with a major aerospace and defense company in information technology. Early on, a seasoned vice president told me, "Get comfortable being uncomfortable," a mantra that has guided my professional development.

Over three years, each new role was a challenge. After the rotational program, I specialized in cybersecurity and then I transitioned to become one of the company's first artificial intelligence developers.

Now, what are your plans? My plans are to make a significant impact on society by developing and implementing artificial intelligence solutions that adhere to stringent government security protocols and compliance standards. My goal is to enable our military branches to seamlessly integrate advanced AI technologies into products designed for space, sea and land operations.

What do you do for fun/recreation? I read fantasy novels, listen to podcasts on technology trends and travel!

$EA WEED: A NOVEL FULL OF HEARSAY!

The sunny Florida Keys, early 1980s. Catch of the day: square groupers. A true paradise where every hour is happy — until it goes to pot. A snorkel trip delivers something unexpected — four bales of marijuana. It's potentially a lucrative real upside. But it becomes a troubling downside. Co-written by two former Keys locals, $ea Weed spins you into a delightful web of hilarious mishaps and explosive sabotage as farcical events fly wildly out of control. If you’ve been to the Keys, you’ll find yourself laughing out loud. If you’ve never been there, you’ll find yourself wondering why.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT LAUNCHES CORAL SHORES GRAD TO A PHARMACIST CAREER

Pharmacist-in-training Rebecca Galvan strives to help cure aches and pains, one patient at a time.

A Coral Shores Class of 2018 graduate, Galvan had her sights set on a health career from a young age. She thought about pursuing a pre-med track or becoming a physician’s assistant; she ultimately landed on a career path in pharmacy.

“I felt like my experiences at pharmacies were positive from a young age,” Galvan said. “A friend’s mom worked at the CVS in Key Largo. I really liked the small-town community pharmacy vibe.”

Galvan was 4 years old when her family moved to the Upper Keys. Her dad owns Andy’s Pools in Key Largo, and her sister, Andrea, operates a dance studio at the Pink Plaza in Key Largo.

Following high school graduation, Galvan attended the University of Florida. She enrolled in the college’s 3+4 program, which allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree and doctor of pharmacy in seven years. She worked at CVS pharmacy in Gainesville during school, and it was there where Galvan took pride in being the support system in a health care sense for the local community.

“If a person had questions about a cold, flu or more complex and chronic conditions, I like being that person to help set them up and get them what they need,” she said. “A lot of times patients can’t make it to their physician or primary care doctor. The pharmacy can be an easier place to get in contact with a health care professional.”

Galvan said she’s currently working in different health settings as part of a community pharmacy rotation. She recently spent time at a Melbourne hospital.

Once she graduates in May, Galvan will head to Rhode Island where she’ll take a clinical pharmacy role at CVS Health’s corporate office for a year.

“I’ve worked for CVS for almost four years now, so it’s exciting to take the next step with a company that’s been supportive,” Galvan said.

Galvan is especially appreciative for the four-year scholarship she received through the Upper Keys Rotary Club and Baptist Health South Florida’s Mariners Hospital. Proceeds from the Gigantic Nautical Market help fund scholarships for graduating high schoolers and students continuing their college education.

“It was a huge motivation and confirmation that I have the support to do what I want as a student,” she said.

Galvan is especially thankful for her Keys upbringing and the close community, as seen during the Gigantic Nautical Market.

“Everyone I talked to about my high school experiences, I describe the Keys as very supportive, unique and one of a kind,” she said. “While the Gigantic Nautical Market is about shopping, it’s also an opportunity for everyone to pitch in and help out and support the future.”

MARINE THEFT PREVENTION

• Install motion sensor lights. Make sure areas around the boat are well lighted

• Install sur veillance cameras and make sure they will capture the face of an intruder. Cameras are often installed too high and only capture the top of a suspects head or the brim of the hat he is wearing

• Install a GPS tracking device on your boat and/or engines.

• Disconnect the batteries to disable the trim / tilt function. Keep the engine down, touching the ground so the lower unit can’t be removed.

• If the boat is on a trailer, chain the rims together or boot one of the wheels to prevent the boat and trailer from being stolen.

• Keep a trailer hitch lock on at all times.

• Install bolt locks on the engine or put extra-long engine bolts on and bend the ends.

• Destroy the threads on one bolt so the nut can’t be removed.

• Keep valuable electronics in a secure location. It might be a hassle, but it will same you thousands of dollars in the long run

FINANCIAL SUPPORT HELPS FUTURE PARAMEDIC

Michael Venezia always dreamed of becoming a firefighter, but after graduating from Coral Shores High School in 2010, he put that aspiration on the back burner and pursued another passion, fishing.

"I branched off and bought a skiff and got a slip at Bud N' Mary's," recalled Venezia of how he started his backcountry fishing charter business, Boned Up Charters, roughly 12 years ago.

Early on in his professional angler career, Islamorada Fire Chief Terry Abel approached Venezia about possibly joining the fire department.

"He said ‘This could be a great thing for you, you could start this and still fish,’" he recalled of their conversation. Chief Abel had been in Venezia's shoes and thought the fire department would be a great fit for him.

"It’s feast or famine fishing," recalled Abel. "I used to do it before the fire department as well out of Bud N' Mary’s, and when the fishing's great, it’s great, you’re rolling in the money and when it’s not you’re like 'man I hope I squirreled away enough money to pay my rent this month,'" added Abel, who is now going on his 31st year with the Islamorada Fire Rescue Department. He's been chief since 2013.

But at that time, Venezia declined the opportunity.

Fast forward to a few years ago and that's when Venezia decided it was time to pursue his lifelong dream. The turning point came when his father, a retired firefighter from Hollywood, Florida started having health problems. Although never an ideal situation for anyone, it could have been much worse. At least his father had retirement and medical benefits.

The fishing guide realized he needed that stability as well, if not for himself, but for his young family.

"I started thinking about the end goal. We have two boys, they're 4 and 6. I needed to go ahead and just jump both feet in, go for it," said Venezia of his decision to join the Monroe County Fire Department's Hot Shots Academy in 2023, which he successfully completed.

The next step was earning his EMT certification. Venezia enrolled in a course; the price tag was roughly $3,800.

The husband and father of two young boys needed financial help to bridge the gap and the Upper Keys Rotary Foundation stepped up to help.

"We support academic students that are well past graduating from Coral Shores High School," said Frank Derfler, Upper Keys Rotary Foundation scholarship chair.

Derfler added that the foundation provides scholarships for academic and technical education alike for students in the Florida Keys. The Gigantic Nautical Market, now in its 30th year, is Rotary's biggest fundraiser.

"We have helped many of our local firefighters get their EMT certification and now we're helping four get this advanced certification," Derfler said.

Venezia, who is 32, is now enrolled in that advanced certification course, a three-semester paramedic program at the College of the Florida Keys.

The total price tag is roughly $10,000 and once again, the Upper Keys Rotary Foundation is there to help.

"I wouldn't be in the position I am in now and doing paramedic now if it wasn't for Rotary," added Venezia.

Islamorada Fire Rescue hired Venezia on full-time in April 2024.

"I would just say to Rotary, thank you, thank you, thank you and for everybody that's involved, keep doing it and keep putting the fundraisers out there and keep doing the Gigantic Nautical Market and make it bigger and make it better," Venezia said.

Derfler said helping Venezia and others earn their EMT and paramedic certifications will benefit the entire community.

"It's huge; I wouldn't have been able to start the program if it wasn't for Rotary."
—MichaelVenezia

"If you wind up horizontal some day and you wake up and you see Michael's face right above you, you should say 'thank you Rotary,'" said Derfler with a laugh.

If all goes according to plan, Venezia will become a certified paramedic this December. Once he graduates, he has no plans of going anywhere else. The Upper Keys is his home, and this community is his family.

"I will be here working for Islamorada. I really don't have any plans to go anywhere else. I'm vested in Islamorada,” Venezia. said “They sponsored me through the Hot Shots program; Rotary has sponsored me through EMT and now through paramedic. So I feel like it's my duty to stay here and serve the community that has provided for me to be able to do all these things."

"We strive to get everybody to the paramedic level, so we facilitate whatever we can to help them achieve that goal; it’s what it’s all about," Abel said . "We love it when we can foster them from our community and keep them in our community."

EVENT PROCEEDS BENEFIT FUTURE PROFESSIONALS

CORAL SHORES GRADS SHARE TRIUMPHS

The Upper Keys Rotary Club’s Gigantic Nautical Market funds scholarships for a young and bright generation gearing up to enter the workforce. Proceeds from the massive shopping event don’t just go to graduating seniors at Coral Shores High School; funds are also distributed to students currently enrolled in college or technical school. More than 20 students attending colleges in Florida and other states provided an update on their academic adventures, their civic achievements and what the future holds for them in terms of a job.

JAVIER HERNANDEZ

I am a senior who will soon have a bachelor’s degree in aviation maintenance science with a minor in avionics line maintenance. I will also be graduating with my airframe and powerplant certifications, along with multiple avionics certifications which will hopefully help me land a role as a full-time aircraft avionics technician this May. I feel great finally being in my last semester of college and I am thankful for Rotary’s scholarships.

AMY LEAL

I am majoring in hospitality management. Thanks to the Upper Keys Rotary I am able to focus on my studies and immerse myself in organizations and activities such as studying abroad and being a part of an event management student program that will help elevate my career.

“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” This quote by Marcus Aurelius profoundly shaped my perspective during 2024, the most challenging yet transformative year of my life. I am currently a freshman and just starting my second semester. I am in the pre-nursing program with an intent to apply for their nursing program. I’ve been doing very well in my classes and adjusting well. This school really reminds me of my home town so that has really helped. My ultimate goal is to one day work at Mariners hospital with my dad who is an RN in the operating room.

BRIAN LESKO

I am currently a junior majoring in commercial entrepreneurship with a minor in real estate. Being accepted into the Jim Moran Entrepreneurship program has truly been monumental for me. I get to learn and practice the fundamentals of starting and maintaining a business. I know that I’m where I need to be to succeed and can’t wait to do so. Although I’m excited to start my life, I am sad that my time at FSU is running out. Going to FSU was the best decision I’ve made. Thank you, mom and dad, for all your help and for raising me to be a Seminole!

I am also a member of the sorority Alpha Omicron PI, where I love spending time with my friends and getting involved in the community!

JULES POWERS

Upon graduating, I’ve gotten the opportunity to begin my career in film. Between working on a MTV show in New York City and an HGTV show in Islamorada, I can definitely say I’ve had some cool experiences. In between film gigs, I’ve begun working as a social media marketing manager for Seven Sports Marine, and continue to run my swimwear business, 333 Swim, with my sisters. Any time off is dedicated to hanging out with friends and family, working out and uploading to my YouTube channel. Here’s to another great year.
