LOCAL CHATTER By Hays Blinckmann The first Saturday in May is known for the most “exciting two minutes in sports” and a lot of frilly hats. Yes, the Kentucky Derby is coming up and we are dusting off the bourbon bottle off and trimming fresh mint from the garden, making ready for a run for the roses. Three-year-old horses with breeding akin to the royal family will step onto the Churchill Down’s track, delight our hearts and ignite our once-a-year gambling habit. And the horses’ names, well they seemed to be made up by toddlers who speak two languages. So we asked locals …
What would you name a racehorse?
Signs of a heart attack are rarely this obvious.
“I would name my racehorse ‘Guilded Peach,’ and she would be a filly,” said Abigail Houff, jewelry designer. Coincidentally, Houff owns a jewelry shop by the same name.
Bill Brown, realtor, mischievously said he would name the race horse “William on William.” (Now, now; get your minds out of the gutter.) He explained: Because I am William who lives on William, of course.”
Carole MacCartee, director, speaks the wisdom of the ages and would name her horse, “A Little Chill Pill Never Hurt.”
During a heart attack, every minute matters. So, know the warning signs. If you experience them, call 911 and get to the nearest emergency room. And know that Lower Keys Medical Center is here to help
Joe Mitchell, concierge and actor, cuts right to the chase. He said, “Soon 2 B Kibble.” No explanation needed.
when you need us.
Leslie Concepcion, financial adviser and a die-hard Miles Davis fan, is excited about the new documentary, “Miles Ahead.” “I would name the horse ‘So What’ from Miles Davis’s album ‘Blue’ just for him.”

GUNS IN THE KEYS
A look at concealed weapons permits and the safety of officers By Hays Blinckmann
G
uns, whether you are for or against them, they exist almost everywhere in the continental United States. Over the past decade in the Florida Keys, more and more guns have entered our news, our stores and our lives across the board. No longer does the use of the word “gun” or “shooting” come solely associated with nefarious behavior of criminals on the mainland. From housewives to tourists, people are packing all up and down the island chain; and with that, instances and choices that can affect the quality of life and safety of our residents. The Florida Keys presently sport three gun ranges (two public, one private), and five gun shops. But many small businesses and private citizens also have FFL’s (Federal Firearm License) where guns can be sold from businesses or homes. Monroe County has 8,120 concealed weapons permits as of March 31, 2016, according to the Department of Agriculture statistics, which is the highest per capita for a county in Florida. About 10 percent of Florida Keys residents are able

to legally walk around with a gun on their person, concealed. (In the Keys, there is no “open carry” law that allows gun owners to display their weapon, for instance, in a hip holster.) Residents and law enforcement have noticed an uptick in crime involving guns in the Keys. (See sidebar). And the national news stories surrounding “stand your ground” challenges on the street and in the courtroom have made their way into Keys living rooms as matters of debate. Some support an individual’s right to protect themselves under a threat or perceived threat, while others worry what will become of society when individuals can brandish weapons at inappropriate times. Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsey and Key West Chief Donie Lee have a lot of insight into what affects gun owners and their choices concerning lawful and unlawful activity. According to Sheriff Ramsey and Chief Lee, the majority of concealed weapons permit holders rarely commit crimes. Most violent criminal activity with a gun involves career criminals with the intent to do harm. But there are the other instances, when people make bad choices. “The shooting on Duval Street is a perfect example. My understanding is that he had a concealed carry permit from another state. He was intoxicated and had a firearm, and made a very dangerous, bad choice which had serious consequences,” said Chief Lee. Sheriff Ramsey has seen a rise in anger and gun usage in the general population especially with road rage and any situation that involves alcohol. “People are acting without thinking, and the majority of time, here in the Keys, the
I believe that as a nation we need to enact common sense gun safety regulations: Mandatory training, mental health checks, and other precautions to ensure public safety. Gun ownership is an individual choice, and there is a lot that goes into that decision. — Key West Police Chief Donie Lee
problem is with alcohol,” said Sheriff Ramsey. “Guns with alcohol, nothing good comes of it. If you are going to drink, leave your gun at home.” Sheriff Ramsey said he is against the idea of open carry laws, but a proponent for lawful gun ownership as a safety measure for our society. Florida Law states that “discharging a firearm or possessing it loaded in hand, while under the influence of alcohol, any prohibited substance, or prescribed medication is a violation of the law.” Also, carrying a concealed weapon — even with a permit — is forbidden in places such as bars, schools, career centers, hospitals, government buildings, “places of nuisance,” prisons, police stations, and polling places. “At least, with a permit, we know who these people are, and they’re law abiding. There’s a whole criminal element who carry firearms and don’t have permits, and these people most certainly pose a threat. That’s why continuous training of police officers is crucial. And that level of caution is why police often get a bad rap for being overzealous,” according to Chief Lee. The number of concealed weapons permits in the Keys, as well as tourists passing through who might also be carrying, have absolutely made police officers more cautious and aware. Keys police officers operate under a “mandatory wear” policy, meaning at all times on-duty officers must wear bullet proof vests. Also, since 2005, Key West police officers have had dash cams and as of 2015, they wear body cameras.

Recent incidents Involving guns
March 23, 2016 A Sugarloaf man was arrested after he allegedly pointed a gun at a Big Pine couple on a motorcycle in what was described as a road rage incident. March 21, 2016 Three people were shot at 1 a.m. on Duval Street, allegedly by a Sugarloaf man involved in a domestic dispute. The three victims received non-life threatening injuries. Feb. 24, 2016 A Kentucky man was arrested after he allegedly pointed a gun at the driver and passenger of a truck as he was driving southbound on U.S.1. Jan. 14, 2016 An Iowa man was arrested after he allegedly pulled a gun on another man staying at the same motel over a dispute regarding cell phone usage in an outside common area. Dec. 26, 2015 A Marathon man was arrested for allegedly threatening to shoot two people and firing a rifle in public. Nov. 15, 2015 A Fort Lauderdale man was arrested after he allegedly fired a gun inside of the Hog Heaven bar in Islamorada. A second man was also arrested at the scene who reportedly ran back to his vehicle and retrieved his gun, then returned to the bar with it. Oct. 24, 2015 A man shot a deputy on Stock Island. The officer was wearing a bulletproof vest and received minor injuries. Oct. 15, 2015 A man and a woman were shot to death in their home on Cuba Road in Tavernier.
Although I am not a Trump supporter I agree with my friend Danny Coll's April 22 letter that it is strange that although Donald Trump won all 99 of the Florida delegates, none of those 99 delegates will necessarily be a Trump supporter even though they will be legally bound to vote for Trump on the first three ballots (if it goes that far). I would advocate a statutory change that the delegates should be selected not by the party, but by the campaign committee of the candidate who won the primary. This seems only logical. However, given that the Legislature is run by legislators presumably beholden to the parties, I would concede that such a change is as likely as a blizzard in Key West in August. There is another reason a candidate who has won a party should be entitled to delegates favorable to him. Beside selecting a nominee, the other important work of a convention is adopting a platform. The eventual candidate ought to be entitled to a platform consistent with his views. This might not happen if the majority of delegates are not sympathetic with the positions of the candidate, even if they are legally bound to vote for him. Tim Gratz Key West

he Key West High School Fashion Club will hold its ninth annual show on Saturday, May 7. But for one senior, Kristin Ayala Crane, it marks the end of one journey—while signifying the beginning of a new one. Crane, who is a decorated KWHS senior, participated in this year’s Homecoming Court, is a member of the varsity volleyball team, carries a weighted 3.3 GPA, holds down two jobs, serves as a peer mentor and volunteers with dozens of community involvement projects. But one of the proudest milestones on her resume is serving four years with the KWHS Fashion Club. Like many dying traits that technology has spurned, sewing has joined a long list of lost arts. Crane, who grew up watching her grandmother and mother sew, said she understands the value and confidence the skill-set which led her to the KWHS Fashion Club as a freshman. “I used to love watching my grandmother and mother sew,” said Crane. “As I got older, I noticed the designs of expensive clothes and realized I could make them.” Shortly after Crane joined as a freshman, the fashion club lost its director, which left the organization’s future in jeopardy. Crane recalls how many of her upper-classmen mentors bonded and worked together to keep the club intact. “We didn’t want to see the club go away,” said Crane. “One of the greatest things that happened is when ‘Ms. A’ [as the kids call Sabryah Alghray] stepped in. She wasn’t as interested in fashion as she was seeing us continue something

we loved.” Today, Alghray continues to sponsor the club that Crane joined in the ninth grade. “I’ve watched Kristin grow from a freshman interested in fashion to a young woman who is a very skilled fashion designer,” said Alghray. “Although I do not share her passion for fashion, I’ve sponsored the club for the past three years so that she may further her dreams of designing.” This year, Ms. A will support Crane and seven other designers in the fashion show. The theme is Arabian Nights. The fashions presented, and the school’s auditorium, will be designed to suit. It’s a popular “family night” for locals in Key West who come to see the girls strut down the catwalk, and the
guys emcee with comedic antidotes between modeling sets. “It’s just a fun night,” said Crane. “Last year we had more than 400 in attendance and I would love to see many more this year.” After graduating, Crane will attend an FSU transfer program in Tallahassee, where she will begin her dream of becoming an attorney. However, she does plan to continue her passion for sewing and fashion and already has plans to intern for State Representative Holly MerrillRaschein. “She came to us one day with all of these plans that she just went out and did on her own,” said Crane’s father, MCSO Capt. Jonathan Crane. “Cathy and I were blown away and it just shows you what an amazing young woman she has become and we couldn’t be more proud of her.” The doors to the ninth annual Key West High School Fashion Show open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. The public is invited.

MUSIC SCENE
Gunning earned his gig in the studio Local musician also spends time in Ramble studio By James Whitehead
H
ave you ever walked into a specific environment or situation and instantly said to yourself, This is where I want to be?” For Andrew Gunning, that moment came at age 16 when he entered the recording studio for the first time. “ We went in to record our very first demo and I walked in to the studio and I instantly realized how much I loved the recording studio environment and knew that was going to be my career of choice.” Andrew finished high school and moved to Orlando to enter Full Sail University’s Recording Arts Bachelor program and hasn’t looked back. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Andrew’s father is a high school band director so music has always been a large part of his world. His parents started him on piano at age 7 and by age 10 he decided to give the guitar a go and he has been writing music on both instruments since age 16. After college, Drew moved back
in with his folks and began experimenting with the recording process, working with local bands and recording straight from his parents’ home. That was when Drew got a call from cousin and local musician Tim Hollohan to come down to Key West and play drums, (yes, he plays those too), for a six-day stint at Hog’s Breath. “I came down and loved the environment and the people and knew I’d be here for awhile,” Andrew said. Andrew began gigging with Tim on a regular basis and con-
tinues to do so Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at the Lazy Gecko playing lead guitar and singing. Upon conception of the Key West Theater, Drew was hired to be the lead recording engineer of the Ramble Room Studios, located within the theater. Working with both local and out-of-town musicians, Gunning has gained the praise of everyone who has come through the studio, including his co-workers. “Drew’s experience and interpersonal skills have created a recording environment that clients love. He helps them relax, have fun and get the best recording experience possible,” said studio manager and The Grateful Guitar owner Daryl Brooke. Andrew continues to write and those of us who are around him on a regular basis know there are good things to come. He is also an important cog in the Sunday Ramble events working with Greg Rue and Derik Reay to make the theater and the participants sound incredible.

It features a splash of blue raspberry liquor, the traditional Japanese saké, vodka and is garnished with a blue sugar rim. “You can’t find this anywhere else in Key West,” she said. “It fits in very well with our sushi menu, and it’s pretty.” Although she moved to Key West three months ago for the beautiful weather, Nicole said she’s been sadly disappointed by regularly occurring deluges. When she isn’t serving up libations at Ambrosia, located in front of the Santa Maria Hotel, she’s partying it up, “like everyone else does.” Ambrosia Sake Bar is located at 1401 Simonton St., Key West.

Dare I say it? Key West needs a community center
I
get it. Affordable housing is our top priority in Key West. So what I’m BRITT about to MYERS do may be considered traded in a life of taboo, or monetary success, a chiseled body and even blasphemous intellectual enlightenment for a piece in some of the pie of the Keys circles, but Weekly newspapers. I’m actually He is also the proud going to parent of an incredwax poetic ible four-year-old and a sucker for on another Michael Mann mov- idea that ies and convenience could store hot dogs. use some funding — and it has nothing to do with workforce housing. Before you open your laptop and begin to type out a thoughtful letter spewing brimstone directed at my soul (I send those to my editor, Sara Matthis, in case you are wondering) please hear me out for the next 300 words or so. It is time for Key West to consider a modern community center, equipped with basketball courts, racket ball courts, rock climbing, weights, a pool, classrooms and event capabilities. There. I said it. And yes, you already have 1,000 objections including — but not limited to — how we don’t have the funding, don’t have the capacity and why this is the worst idea since introducing the python to the Everglades. Full disclosure: I love sports and I’m a parent. Also, keep in mind that my son loves the Butterfly Conservatory (his favorite), we never miss a week at the local parks and we take part in an array of outdoor activities that we probably take for granted all too often. However, as a parent, the most common complaint I hear amongst moms and dads is
the lack of recreational activities offered in Key West — not just for grade school ages, but teens too. Consider for a moment a recreational center that could become (a much-needed) permanent home for the Boys and Girls Club, host larger trade shows and conferences (which place heads in beds), provide local membership opportunities, offer children’s and senior’s classes, dance studios, meeting spaces; imagine it’s open to non-profits, available for aquatic uses for the high school and community, possibly a home for FKCC basketball teams (wink, wink Dr. G) and so on. So we now have a recreational center that creates jobs, adds to the local tax base, supports our local schools, caters to the arts, aids our seniors, embraces our children, promotes our local business community and nonprofits. But I know what you’re thinking — where do we build such a monstrosity? To be honest, I don’t know, but it wasn’t long ago that a super WalMart found enough land to park the proposed Death Star in the Keys and I selfishly believe my idea is much better than $2 off on bulk toilet paper. For now, it’s simply my idea; a thought to store in the back of your mind that might bob up between happy hour cocktails and hangover bloodies. And yes, with every idea must come accountability. How do we fund such a project? Does it take priority over other needs? How do we sustain it once it’s built and who would govern a local community center? And who is this Britt Myers guy and why is he NOT talking about affordable housing?

ON THE STAGE
‘The Cripple Of Inishmaan’ All that’s missing from Red Barn production is a pint of Guinness
W
elcome to Inishmaan, a town that will feel as familiar, small and darkly humorous as Key West. Martin McDonagh’s Tony-nominated play, “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” is now playing at the Red Barn Theater and brings the Irish version of a small town full of gossips, heartache, humor, and mischief to the stage. Directed by Carole MacCartee, the play exudes her love of Irish playwriting and brings the humor and passion of an isolated island full of characters right to Duval’s doorstep. “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” written in 1934, is set around the character Cripple Billy (Arthur Crocker) who is raised by two doddering and doting aunties: Kate Osbourne (Peggy Montgomery) and Eileen Osbourne (Vanessa McCaffrey). Billy struggles to find his own way off the island into the world, leaving his moniker behind. An American movie is being filmed on the neighboring island of Inishmore, and the Inishmaan youth Helen McCormick (Aleister Eaves) and her brother, Bartley McCormick (Charlie Lawrence), also dream big of American things such as boys and candy. The town gossip Johnnypateenmike (Doug Shook) plays town crier for all the news and is the meddlesome go between the young and the old, wreaking havoc on truth and gossip. Billy eventually gets to America but like all dreams the reality is cruel and heads back to his beloved Ireland home still searching for the truth about his parents and
the Irish girl of his dreams. The characters are richly crass and unforgiving in their relationships with each other. Johnnypateenmike tries to kill his 90-year-old mother with an endless supply of booze. Conversely, Mammy O’Dougal (Robin Deck), Johnnypateenmike’s mother is the only one having a jolly good drunk time. Helen beats her brother and kills farm animals for extra cash, and Babbybobby Bennett (Ross Pipkin) — the “lovable, kind friend” carries a billy club and is prone to violence. Doctor McSharry (Tom Murtha) seems to
be the only voice of reason that nobody will listen to. The original Irish language and accent seem to be the 10th character of the play — in true Irish form, nothing is “feking” off limits. In the end, the people of Inishmaan make cruel jokes, laugh at each other’s nature but underneath care deeply about each other. Johnnypateenmike says the play’s quintessential ironic line, “Because in Ireland, people are more friendly.” Carole MacCartee does a magnificent job of bringing the original play to life while all the actors convey the genuine feel
The play’s similarities to Key West are too many to count.

Grouper season has its pluses and minuses
Local grouper season reopens May 1 By Kristen Livengood
G
rouper season is closed in Monroe County waters from January 1 through April 30 each year with an anticipated opening on May 1. The closure, which started in 2010, has been said to be good for the grouper stocks, but also a pain to some charter and commercial fishermen. “Catching grouper is great the first few days, but then three days in, it’s back to normal,” said Ryon Logan, the charter captain of Cheerio out of Hurricane Hole Marina on Stock Island, who is not a fan of the closures, saying it hurts local charter and commercial fishermen. “May is our busiest month anyway,” he said with tarpon, sailfish and dolphin fishing happening at the same time. “It’s a terrible system to target the fish and then flood the market.” Grouper fishing from a boat typically involves baits fished near the bottom, with heavy tackle and line to bring grouper to the surface. Last year,
(CONT.) Charter Captain Chris Mendola of Far Out Charters in Key West suggested live bait for the best bites, like pinfish, grunts and blue runners. Some also like to get in the water and try their hand at hunting down their tasty meals with a speargun. Fishermen target gags and blacks longer than 24-inches total length and reds at 20-inches total length or more. Scamps and snowys can be found on deeper Keys wrecks. Warsaw, Nassau, and goliath grouper harvest is prohibited year round. Recreational fishermen can’t have more than three grouper on their boat per person and can only have one black or one gag per person, i.e. a black grouper and two reds, or a gag grouper and two reds, but not a black, a gag and a red. Middle Keys resident Kyle Franz has charters lined up on Main Attraction out of Key Colony Beach for the opening of grouper season. “We usually anchor at the reef and on wrecks and fish with yellowtail,” he said. Franz is a former commercial fisherman who made the switch to charter trips a few years ago. “We have a couple spots lined up where we’ve been catching two or three grouper a day that we throw back.” Franz said he will personally be targeting snowys and blueline tiles in the deeper water, which have also been closed and reopen on May 1. If the closures were up to Logan, he said he would return to the former two-month closure that reopened on March 1, or a closure that would reopen in September when season is slow. More information about seasons and closures in Monroe County can be found at myfwc. com.

A drag queen and an art walk into a gallery… Joan Becker paints local icon at Rockhouse Art Gallery By Hays Blinckmann
O
pen for only a year, the Rockhouse Art Gallery bills itself as “more than a gallery” and proved it last Saturday. The gallery hosted artist Joan Becker, a Philadelphia native, painting live. Her subject? Beloved local drag queen Inga from Aqua. The atmosphere was jovial and fun as bystanders watched Becker, with charcoal and gouache, create a unique and colorful portrait of Inga. Inga’s dress was a splash of comic book design complete with a pompom headband as garnish. Becker’s deft ability quickly captured the fun-loving essence of Inga, and may be the start to a series of drag queen paintings, she said. Inga joked, “I was promised lunch” when asked why she would sit for a portrait, not one to take it all too seriously. Becker attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2003 and her usual style consists of watercolor or gouache portraits and still lifes with a quirky, colorful flair. The style seems fitting to capture the most vibrant personalities in town. “I always wanted to paint a drag queen. So I walked into The Rockhouse Gallery, proposed my idea and handed them my card,” said Becker, a frequent visitor to the Keys. The gallery, which is known to host a weekly mind reader on Fridays, enjoys having unusual events in the “Bahama Village Arts District,” according to Mark Schreiber. The Rockhouse Art Gallery is an eclectic mix of modern handcrafted furniture and art. (It’s an official retailer of Pacific Green Furniture, handcrafted furniture from Fiji made from palmwood.) “We are trying to be really engaged with the community,” said gallery owner Eric Dickstein. “We wanted a gallery

where people could really absorb the art while in a beautiful, sensory setting.” Dickstein encourages people to sit on the furniture and enjoy the art while attending the unconventional events the gallery staff dreams up. The Rockhouse Art Gallery itself is unconventional. It’s located inside a renovated old Methodist Church circa 1900 in Key West’s Bahama Village on Julia Street. Dickstein spent more than a year working on the redevelopment of the building and wants the community to enjoy it as a gathering place for art and events. Case in point: Dickstein has plans to revive Captain Outrageous’ art bike program, where “Conch Cruisers” are transformed by artists into one-of-a-kind bicycles. Inga’s portrait will be for sale once completed.

he view from the patio of Le Petit Paris, nestled at the corner of Duval and Olivia, immediately reminded me of New Orleans. I could see the facades of several historic buildings from my chair, and felt transported to the boulevards of the Big Easy. This sentiment was only strengthened when the outstanding food began to arrive. The quaint and unpretentious setting perfectly mirrors the cuisine: straightforward, fresh, and delicious. A former bartender from Poland, owner Robert’s success is based on one simple premise: an establishment that offers the freshest ingredients as a focus will surely earn a following. This thesis’ manifestation is a short menu of superb freshness, all done to uncomplicated perfection. Robert’s philosophy is evident in his most popular dish, the Lobster Benedict. Served with crispy and savory herb potato wedges, this brunch classic is rich and comforting, with a generous portion of succulent lobster. The key to any classic dish is to make each element stand alone with confidence, as Robert does expertly. The
muffin was perfectly toasted, to stand up to the lobster and sauce. And as I mentioned, the potato wedges were a perfect compliment. Also sampled was the Steak Crepe, a daily feature. I typically prefer a sweet crepe, but this was far from typical. The marriage of flavors — juicy steak, sharp Gorgonzola and superfresh veggies — all came together to form a hearty, rustic, country-European classic. To balance our experience with something sweet, we ended with a decadent Crepe Suzette. Robert’s mastery of the crepe is nothing short of impressive. Both crepe dishes were golden and slightly crispy, without a hint of the sponginess found in “lesser” crepes. This classic Suzette had a strong flavor of Grand Marnier and mandarin oranges. For a taste of the French Quarter (but better), visit Le Petit Paris, and laizzes les bons temps rouler!
