LOCAL CHATTER By Hays Blinckmann Happy Mother’s Day, a day to look back at the blur of motherhood, pat yourself on the back and say, “Atta girl, you have kept the children alive.” Remember the glow you had at your baby shower? (Yeah, we know, stop laughing.) Now fast forward to catching vomit with your bare hands (my editor) or constantly forgetting to shave both legs at the same time (me). We love motherhood and wouldn’t trade it for the world, but it’s hard. So we asked our beloved Mothers …

SIC LIVE MULY NIGHT
HAPPY HOUR “Gosh, there’s been so many ridiculous situations that made me laugh out loud,” said Dawn Gonet, mother to Rocky and Dean. “Like when bathroom invasions by large dogs led by my little boys left me unruffled and actually became the norm, or realizing that an afternoon of relaxation means an excursion to the supermarket with the possibility of a stop at Ross — solo!”
“When everyone left my hospital room and I was alone with my baby, I suddenly realized ‘Wait a minute, I’m in charge here,’” said Jessica Bennet, mom to Genevieve and Richard. “The reality is, motherhood is like a job were you show up for your first day of work in the mailroom and instead you’re escorted to your new office as the CEO. Good luck and don’t screw it up.”
Laura Kasper, mother of two boys Kelly and Kasey, said reality raised its head on more than one occasion. “I wore two different color shoes to work. Or I looked forward to the Cookie Monster segment of Sesame Street like it was a daily soap opera, and played it back on the DVD when my husband came home just so I could relate to another adult.”

“So Let me tell you when it REALLY hits home: the learner’s permit. Yep, teen driving,” said Melanie Wilson, mother of Blake and Gus. “This adventure is super fun! And by super fun I mean most nerve-racking! It is at this moment when you say to yourself, ‘Self, I hope you were a good mom and that your child listened because he/she is all grown up.’ And that realization is the scariest of all.”

GUNS IN THE KEYS A look at purchasing and shooting a weapon in the Florida Keys Hays Blinckmann
G
un ownership has been on the rise in the past decade in the Florida Keys. While there might be many reasons to own a gun, two recurring ones are the need for self-protection and a fear the federal government will ban the sale of all guns. Keys residents are buying guns, and in many cases multiples, and obtaining concealed weapons permits faster than any other county in Florida. According to the Monroe County Sheriff, violent crime has decreased since 1995. However, because of how crimes are categorized it’s difficult to know how many incidents involved the use of guns. For example, a crime may be deemed violent but the weapon could have been a beer bottle or a gun. Or a burglary may be categorized as an armed burglary because a gun was present, but not necessarily brandished. The Monroe County’s Sheriff’s office has documented one, maybe two, home invasions a year since 2008 according to MCSO’s Becky Herrin. Key West Police spokesperson Alyson Crean said, “There were 36 burglaries of occupied residences in 2015. However, we categorize an occupied burglary as any type of theft when people are home. That means even a bike stolen off the porch would be included in this category.” In September of 2015, a Big Pine Key man shot to death another man who was trying to force his way into the house in what was allegedly a domestic dispute. He was not charged
with a crime as it was deemed a “stand your ground” scenario by the State Attorney. Mark Senmartin owns Cash Flow Jewelry and Pawn in Marathon. (He is also the city’s elected mayor). He has been licensed to sell guns for seven years. “In order to even find out the dealer’s cost, I had to be licensed. So when I got into this, I didn’t even know if it was going to be profitable,” he said. Diligence is key when it comes to weapons sales and Senmartin is always on the look out for those attempting to make an illegal “straw purchase,” for another person who is not qualified to own a gun. (See more about authorized sellers in the sidebar.)
PART 2 OF 3 IN A SERIES
THE LAW • Who can’t own a gun? Convicted felons, those convicted of a misdemeanor or domestic violence, and those who have been deemed mentally defective in a court or committed to mental institution. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the agency performing the background checks, may also deny the sale to a person arrested for one of 22 “dangerous” crimes ranging from extortion to controlled substance violations. • When purchasing a gun, a buyer has two options. First, to seek a registered and licensed Federal Firearm Licensed gun dealer who is “engaged in the business” of selling guns. Also, used firearms may also be bought and sold privately by an unlicensed seller. An unlicensed seller is categorized as someone who does not make the majority of their livelihood from gun sales and is not required to impose a waiting period or background check. President Barack Obama recently issued new executive actions that further restrict unlicensed sellers to less than two sales in certain circumstances in order to qualify. • Gun purchasers, including those with a “carry” license, must pass a background check every time they purchase from a FFL licensee. That is true for purchasers of handguns or long guns. Persons 18 and older may purchase a long gun, defined as a shotgun or rifle, without a waiting period. Only persons 21 and older may purchase handguns and the purchase includes a 72-hour waiting period. • Florida has no laws regulating the sale of “assault weapons” other than those listed above.

Since the inception of the National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) in 2014, the federal government has performed 202,536,522 checks. In that time, it has denied 1,166,676 transactions. — Federal Bureau of Investigation

Who is buying the guns? “Just your average regular citizen, really,” Senmartin said. “I have the group that wants something for protection, or the group that are collectors and are looking for something very specific. And then more recently, the group who is worried that their right to own a gun will be taken away and wants to purchase a gun before that happens; they don’t make up a huge percentage, but it’s more than it used to be.” Senmartin said he works to “match” the gun to the owner. “Ultimately, I will sell them what they want. But if you have an older woman that doesn’t have a lot of hand strength, and can’t work a slide, I steer her towards a revolver. Or I help buyers find a carry gun or choose a weapon for a minor. I want them to have the best option. That’s just customer service.” In addition to selling guns, Senmartin also offers firearm education. He is a licensed NRA instructor able to provide certification classes for concealed weapon ownership. Senmartin’s classes are a three-hour classroom seminar about gun safety, handling and cleaning, and more importantly, gun laws. Senmartin teaches from the book; “Florida Firearms Law, Use and Ownership.” Then he takes the class to the shooting range to continue safety and responsibility when handling and shooting a gun. He said some students need less instruction than others. “We shoot until I’m comfortable the student is comfortable.”

In 2014, a Big Pine backyard range garnered national attention. When Doug Varrieur used his yard on a busy canal as a gun range, he was completely within his rights. However, public outcry prompted a change to the law. Gov. Rick Scott signed bill SB 130 last July, which prohibits the recreational discharge of a firearm in certain residential areas, specifically in areas “that the person knows or reasonably should know is primarily residential in nature and that has a residential density of one or more dwelling units per acre.” This does not mean backyard ranges do not exist in the Keys, but they must be in more rural areas. Many Keys residents make use of two indoor shooting ranges — one in the Lower Keys and one in the Upper Keys. Phillip Condella, owner of the Big Coppitt Gun Club, said he sees a mixture of clientele, about 25 percent women and up to 10 percent overseas visitors during season. The club offers free safety and instruction when entering the range and private lessons are always available. Staff checks the ammunition because steel cores are not allowed. “We are not going to let people treat guns with a casual air,” said Condella, adding that staff absolutely refuses access to anyone who seems intoxicated or under the influence. Condella sums up the essence of safe and lawful gun possession: “Anyone who owns a gun should know how to use it. Safety is a priority.”

City approves Peary Court deal
— hands decision over to county Housing Authority By Britt Myers
I
n March, Key West voters declined to support the City purchase of Peary Court for affordable housing on two separate referendum questions. But just a short time before midnight on Tuesday, Key West City Commissioner Jimmy Weekley (the original sponsor of the Peary Court item) excited the front steps of Old City Hall with a sense of victory. Commissioners voted 4-3 in favor of initializing steps for a private commercial real estate company, The Cornfeld Group, to purchase Peary Court for $60 million from its current owner, a private corporation. In addition, The Cornfeld Group will receive $12.5 million of Land Authority funds in exchange for allocating all the rental properties and future developments as deed restricted in perpetuity. “We are purchasing all 24 acres there — the buildings, the entitlements —everything,” said Jeff Cornfeld representing his family-owned firm. “The deed restriction will be in perpetuity. It’s forever. Two hundred years from now people will look back and realize the foresight that city planners had today.” By approving the measure, the City essentially signed over purchase negations to the Monroe County Land Authority. Charles Pattison, executive director for the Land Authority, said it would likely partner with a local firm, such as the Key West Housing Authority, to manage rents and maintenance if a deal were finalized. And Manuel Castillo, who heads the Housing Authority and was a vocal proponent for the City’s Peary Court deal, would then oversee the deed restrictions. “My understanding is the Housing Authority would continue to monitor affordable deed restrictions,” said Castillo. “We would be monitoring the deed restrictions for the City of Key West.” However, not everyone on the dais was satisfied with the deal, most notably Commissioner Sam Kaufman. Kaufman has long argued for affordable housing aimed at low-income families in Key West, but the Peary Court purchase will likely preserve medium income housing. Furthermore, Kaufman questioned the Land Authority’s policy on funding private organizations and was stunned that no purchase agreement was available before casting a vote. “I would be 100 percent behind this if rents could be lower, but I have concerns,” said Kaufman. “Even when I buy something for a $1,000, I want to see a contract. Here we are engaging in a $60 million proposal with $12.5 million of our own money and we haven’t seen a contract. How many of us in here do that?” At one point Kaufman continued to question the Land Authority’s ability to fund private organizations when Mayor Craig Cates intervened and said, “I think you’ve now asked the same question many different ways — it’s time to move on.” Local developer Ed Swift said that using $12.5 million for new construction projects aimed at low income and similar projects would only yield about 16 units. Instead, Swift pointed to the additional, yet-to-be-built 48 units that are allowed under the increased density at Peary Court, which could eventually preserve more than 200 units of workforce housing in Key West. “Something like this is very rare,” said Swift. “By protecting this land for $12.5 million you will be doing the workers of this community a great service.”
Clayton Lopez, who eventually voted in favor of the measure, questioned what would transpire if the buyers defaulted on financing. However, Cornfeld assured the Commissioners that all deed restrictions would survive any foreclosure —“removing 100 percent of the risk from the City and placing it back on the private sector.” And Commissioner Billy Wardlow, one of three dissenters, expressed fears that buyers could potentially flip the property at any given time, causing delays and issues with the promises being made to the City. But again, Cornfeld countered that it would take several years to make the project profitable, which would suppress any immediate interest. “I don’t think there’s anyone lining up behind me to buy deed restricted property,” said Cornfeld. “There’s nothing to flip. It takes time and creativity and I’m dedicating several years of my life to this project.” The following day Sam Kaufman remained unsatisfied that Land Authority officials had a clear policy on funding private organizations. That issue, along with many more, will be addressed at the next Land Authority meeting on Wednesday, May 18. Barring any set backs between the sellers and buyers, both the Housing and Land Authorities seemed primed to accept the deal. If concluded, the only measure that would return to the City Commission would be a development agreement for additional units and affordable rates — meaning the fate of Peary Court now rests solely with the Housing Authority. Mayor Craig Cates voted in favor of the item, along with Commissioners Payne, Lopez and Weekley. Commissioners Kaufman, Romero and Wardlow dissented.
The Cornfeld Group will receive $12.5 million of Land Authority funds in exchange for allocating all the rental properties and future developments as deed restricted in perpetuity.

The Blues come to Key West for one night Tinsley Ellis plays at Key West Theater next week By Hays Blinckmann
A
t 14 years old, Tinsley Ellis heard BB King at the Marco Polo hotel in Miami Beach and never looked back. By the next year, he was immersing himself in Muddy Waters, Billy Preston, Howlin’ Wolf and Albert Collins. The Blues itself turns a century old this decade and Ellis has been a part of the movement for four decades. Ellis describes his style as Southern Blues Rock and will be debuting his 19th album, “Red Clay Soul,” this spring. The album is heartfelt and true to his Georgia roots and “has a serious Southern vibe and speaks of the soul of the region.” We asked Ellis how he feels continuing the Blues tradition in the 21st century and about playing Key West Theater on Thursday, May 12. Keys Weekly: In the age of high production music, blues guitar can seem rather traditional. What do you think? Tinsley Ellis: My music is the antidote for what I saw on the Super Bowl half time show. I watched that and thought, ‘What the hell?’ The dancing, flashing, and actual leaping … there’s not a lot of leaping in my show. KW: Who is your audience? TE: People who come to my show miss the sound of rock ‘n’ roll from the ’70s. It’s a mix of blues and vocals that people can understand. Fans of blues classic rock are very loyal — and I am glad I chose it as a template for the music I play. I still see three generations in my audience, which is hopeful.
“I am such a big fan of Tinsley’s and can’t wait for the show. For me, the blues is the foundation for everything. I play what I call ‘American Roots’ music which is blues, jazz and R&B, but I always try and keep it funky.” —Local Larry Baeder, on opening for Tinsley Ellis
KW: Do you try and keep up with what’s popular? TE: I am a bit disenfranchised by modern pop and country music (he admits Taylor Swift is pretty talented) so playing this kind of music (blues) isn’t the smartest career move. There is very little left of BB King type music, it’s evolving and changing, but I will always try to keep the feel of it. KW: Then how do you keep going? TE: Young rock stars don’t realize that eventually your hair falls out and there comes a time you are not so pretty anymore. With the blues, that just means you charge another $500 for the show. I never was the voice of youth rebellion, not much shocking about me. Well, maybe later, after the show, then the shocking stuff happens. KW: Who would you have lunch with if you could? TE: Eric Clapton, we have a lot in common. KW: How many times have you watched the “Blues Brothers”? TE: I watch the “Blues Brothers” every single time it is on TV. The part about booking the venue, absolutely true. KW: Eight-track? Cassette? Mp3? CD? Vinyl? TE: Vinyl is coming back, I pressed my last album and began selling it at my shows and people love it. Nothing sounds like vinyl. Eight-track and cassette were never meant to be. And the Mp3 is not as good as CD. I actually really love CD. The best is 45, but you have to keep changing the record.”

MUSIC SCENE
BEHIND THE SCENES: GREG RUE
Buffalo Pistol plays new music
By James Whitehead
T
hey often go unrecognized. Many concertgoer’s may never even see them throughout an entire show. They are the sound engineers. That being said, they are a musician’s life-line and those of us who have had the pleasure to work with Greg Rue most certainly appreciate the incredible work he does on a daily basis. Born in Des Moines, Iowa and raised in Galesburg, Illinois, Greg Rue was surrounded by music. Both his brothers were avid music fans and his father’s speaker system, purchased in the Vietnam era, was the focal point of the family living room. Upon graduating high school, Greg moved to Columbia, South Carolina were he began performing music and promoting concerts for local venues.
He then began running sound for a small, local club where he was hosting an open mic night. “This is where my real education began. I had the opportunity to work with professional sound engineers who were working with large, national acts,” Rue said. Greg continued to mix sound for several local Columbia clubs. During this time, Greg was introduced to Joal Rush and the two became close friends. Joal was set up to hit the road with fellow South Carolina native and current Key West fixture Nick Norman. Along with Caffeine Carl and Joey Marchiano, Greg was hired to run the sound for the band. They set out on what would be an almost two-year
run and Greg was there for the duration. Upon completing the tour, Rue was asked to run sound for the Whiskey Jam festival in Key West. He flew down and fell in love. “After a few days here in Key West, I decided to throw my return ticket in the trash,” Rue said, counting five on-island years under his belt. Rue recently started a production business with fellow sound engineer Art Sigler called The Art of Sound. “We currently handle upwards of 100 shows a month at several venues including the Smokin’ Tuna, Key West Theater, Gas Monkey and several others,” he said. Rue also runs sound for The Sunday Ramble shows.
My mom and I have always been really close. She's always been the friend that was always there. There were times when, in middle school and junior high, I didn't have a lot of friends. But my mom was always my friend. Always. — Taylor Swift

W
hile crowds of music fans from around the world will head downtown to take in the sounds of yet another impressive billing during this week’s Key West Songwriter’s Festival, a small gathering of local performers will coast out to the edge of town for something a little more downhome. The craftsmen/artist collective, COAST, in the spirit of their “live by it” maxim, has organized an afternoon of original music on Saturday, May 7 highlighting underthe-radar, mostly local talent that culminates with the album release “Porthole” by local sailor/surfer/songwriter Buffalo Pistol, a.k.a. Kristopher King. King isn’t your typical Key West musician. He rarely, if ever, plays gigs preferring instead to write songs and hone them over months of front porch swinging. His music is all original and comes as a result of experiences both in Key West and abroad. COAST founder Billy Kearins said, “I’m a huge fan of the Songwriter’s Festival and love seeing Key West attract such talent, but at the same time, we love to find and help promote artists that might not otherwise have the opportunity to play for a living. And that’s part of our ‘live by it’ mantra, this idea that everyone should have the opportunity to work towards their dreams.” The event will start at 2 p.m. with a steady flow of artists, bands and performers throughout the afternoon and evening. Food and drink will be available and mellow folk of all ages are welcome. Admission is $10. COAST is located at 6404 Front Street on Stock Island.

artender Kenny Bedenbaugh says the food at Charlie Mac’s is his favorite part about working at the Southard Street bar. He said the fish tacos and mac ‘n’ cheese balls, are both great with the signature drink, the Southern Spiked Tea. The drink is made with Deep Eddy Lemon vodka and mixed with ice tea and mint. “It’s easy to drink and not too heavy,” he said. Bedenbaugh moved to Key West eight years ago to beat the winters in New York. “I was tired of shoveling snow,” he said. A few years later, he found his home at the rustic Key West bar Charlie Mac’s and has been there for the past three years. When he isn’t bartending, he can be found on the water fishing and swimming. Charlie Mac’s is located at 404 Southard St. It’s open seven days a week.

O
ften times I listen to C.W. Colt perform on a small stage at Two Friends Patio on Front Street. His voice evokes childhood memories of my grandfather, when I would reluctantly accompany him to bluegrass festivals in Hiwassee, Georgia. I would pretend to hate the experience, but I secretly loved the sounds of banjos, fiddles and steel guitars. On one occasion, Jerry Reed took center stage and that is when I realized some artists are born with a gift to write and sing. And C.W. Colt is one of those men. Although I know C.W.’s amazing story, I often wonder if the casual tourist or happy hour patron is aware of the magnitude behind the man performing before them. Do they know he doesn’t need the money — that the same man who sometimes plays in front of ten people at a bar also performed at the likes of Red Rocks and a sold out Mile High Stadium? That Chet Atkins taught him his first chords and from there, the lists of legendary musicians he’s performed with are bigger than the food menus on the tables. Names like Ernest Tubbs, Jimmy Buffett, Bo Diddley and dozens more. But C.W. Colt belongs to a fellowship of talented singer songwriters in Key West, including the legendary Paul Cotton, Barry Cuda, Adrienne Zolondick, Larry Baeder, Mike McCloud and many others. Their stories are intertwined with some of the most renowned names in the business, yet they continue to play (and write) out of love for music. Their biographies and accolades are as decorated as anyone who might walk through the doors of Daryl’s House, but a code of accomplished-humility rarely catches them offering glimpses into their melodic immortality. So on this remarkable week, when hundreds of aspiring and gifted songwriters flock to the Southernmost City, we took a moment to honor one of our own — and honor the rich tradition of songwriting in a city that has served as a muse for the some of the best. We tasked C.W. Colt with finishing these statements: Musician Taj Mahal once told me you’re 20 years ahead of your time. I only have so many shows left in me. It’s why I love what I do and I’m at the top of my game at this point. A great compliment was when John McEuen [Nitty Gritty Dirt Band] said ‘I wish I could do what you do.’ There’s something liberating about being able to perform without a band. I was diagnosed with throat cancer when I was opening for Willie Nelson. I probably wouldn’t be here today had I continued with my band. I sometimes see old friends that have had success in the Music business that I once envied. I always had work and a good income, but never had a #1 hit. But these guys are now on the back-side of that fame and fortune, and when they see my life here in the Keys, where I live, how I live, the love I get everyday from my fans, they say...."CW you have it all! This is what we all want". I’ve written enough songs to make a decent living.
Financially, my most successful song is "Is it True.” It has the best CD sales and thousands of digital downloads. Emotionally, "The Characters Are Real".... when I look out at my audience, there are always tears in someone’s' eyes. My most meaningful song is “If I had Her Picture,” about an old man I met in Santa Rosa and from his story about how he let the love of his life go. I wrote the song that got her back. Better than a Grammy or any award just knowing I made a difference is worth it. Songwriters who have influenced me are Van Morrision, Frank Sinatra, Merle Haggard. In fact since Merle's passing, I've been playing so many of these old classic Country songs again, and noticing how people are responding. It's inspiring my next endeavor I co-wrote a version of Doug Gill's "Stronger Back".... The message is "Don't pray for a lighter load… pray for a stronger back." The most recent song I’ve written is “Fishin’ For a Song” and is a work in progress. I write songs with meaning. People once said "Don't quit your day job"! I can tell when a song is honest when the fat lady sings it. I once cried when Bambi’s mother was shot. A song can make a difference in your life and can make the world sing. I never had more fun than performing. Often interacting with a few people in an intimate setting is as inspiring as the big stage. I remember listening to my mother sing. Every artist should have wonderful fans that adore them and give them support. The perfect song is "You never called me by my name" by Steve Goodman. I perform at Two Friends Patio Bar (Tuesday and Friday noon to 3 p.m.) Loggerheads (Saturday) and Sunset Pier (Wednesday 1 to 4 p.m.) Page 11 • Key West Weekly • May 6, 2016

Grimal Grove’s Patrick Garvey and wife Angelica are proud of where the grove is now. “Four years ago, it was a dumpsite filled with Brazilian peppers and poisonwood,” said Angelica toasting with a glass of wine. “Patrick saw a paradise. f you are relatively new to the Keys, you may never have heard of Key West Harbour; I certainly hadn’t. The private club on Stock Island has many devoted members, but the large, tasteful restaurant on the second floor of the clubhouse is open to the public. I suggest you load up the car, call a cab, or bike it on over to Key West Harbour as soon as you can to sample Chef Clive’s cuisine, and mull over the prospects of private beach-club membership. Our view of said private beach and marina was breathtaking, setting the scene for an inspired dining experience. Chef Clive started us off with his Jamaican ceviche, mahi-mahi on the day of our visit. Many of Clive’s dishes have a strong Jamaican influence, and this colorful, flavorful selection was no exception. The spicy citrus vinaigrette was well balanced, the fish was light and firm, and the crunchy Parmesan crostini proved to be the perfect mode of delivery. We moved on to the small KEY WEST HARBOUR

plates section of the menu, which is extensive. (Please note: most of these little delights are half-off daily during happy hour.) We sampled the medallion of filet mignon, the lobster pasta, and the Mussels Jamaica. The filet was precisely cooked and paired classically with asparagus, scalloped potatoes, and a rich burgundy au jus. The noodle, in the lobster pasta, was a buttery and decadent grilled angel hair. It provided the perfect bed on which to rest the pan-seared, half-Maine lobster tail. And the Mussels Jamaica were as beautiful as they were delicious, wading in a robust mackerel sauce, with understated complexity and balanced acidity. Clive says this recipe has been passed down in his family “for generations.” It is no mystery why one would want to keep this island secret safely buried. In lieu of dessert, we ended our dinner with a raspberry white chocolate martini, one of a sizeable selection of chocolate martinis the club offers. The visit truly just got better and better. Like any country club worth its salt, Sunday brunch is said to be amazing, for any Mother-related holidays in the near future, but no excuses are needed to make the trip. The next time you find yourself with a moment to spare on Stock Island, meander over to Key West Harbour, and check out the club.

This family-friendly event is a favorite with locals as they come out to see student-created and student-modeled fashions as envisioned by Key West High School. Dozens of high school students run the show from decorations all the way to emceeing and acting in the skits between fashion sets.
This quartet has played Strathmore (Maryland), Interlochen (Michigan) and Wintergreen (Viriginia) and is coming to Key West next week for a special performance at The Studios of Key West. Invoke encompasses traditions from across America, including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, and minimalism.

Randy stars in ‘Die Mommie Die!’ Waterfront production opens on May 11 Contributed
T
he Waterfront Playhouse will close the blockbuster 76th season with the hilarious comic thriller, “Die, Mommie, Die!” by Charles Busch and starring Randy Roberts. The play opens on Wednesday, May 11 and will run for three weeks, playing Wednesday to Saturday each week at 8 p.m. There will be one, low-price preview on Tuesday, May 10, also at 8 p.m. “Die, Mommie, Die!” is a comic melodrama that evokes the lurid 1960’s films that featured aging stars such as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Lana Turner. Roberts plays Angela Arden, a once famous pop singer, who is trapped in a hateful marriage with film producer Sol Sussman (David Black). Angela will do just about anything to get out of the marriage and find happiness with her hot younger lover, an out-of-work TV actor, Tony Parker (Rock Solomon). So Angela disposes of Sol in a hilarious scenario. In a move that combines Greek tragedy with Hollywood kitsch, Angela’s daughter, Edith (Erin McKenna), convinces Angela’s emotionally disturbed son, Lance (Matt Hollis Hulsey), that they must avenge their father’s death by killing their mother. Lance, demanding proof of Angela’s crime, slips some LSD into her after-dinner coffee. Angela is plunged into a wild acid trip that reveals all of the Sussman family’s dirty laundry. Assisting with the she-nanigans is Angela’s mouthy maid, Bootsie (Traci Reynolds). “Die, Mommie, Die!” is directed by Murphy Davis and will feature an outstanding cast of comic actors. Set designer Michael Boyer will create the 1960’s Beverly Hills home, with costumes by J. B. McLendon, Randy Roberts and Sushi. Lighting
will be by John Jaworski with properties by Carmen Rodriguez. Trish Manley is the stage manager. Randy Roberts is a Key West legend with his famous one-

Maestra Sebrina Alfonso introduces the Symphony debut appearance of the Invoke Quartet in the first Chamber Music Concert of 2016. This contemporary string quartet has been described as “versatile and musically adventurous, way more than classical…”

Do you tweet? Who do you follow on Twitter? I do. I follow my friends from Massachusetts, where I’m originally from, and all my friends here in the Keys. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenges facing the Keys would be the cruise ships. I would start limiting the amount of cruise ships allowed in Key West per month. What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend Johnson and Wales University in North Miami and plan to study fashion merchandising. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I am not sure yet. I want to spend some time traveling first. I know I definitely want to come back and visit as some point. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … adventure and responsibility.

This version of The Bedfan claims to be the original and is much more economical than its Brookstone’s counterpart. $85 @ amazon.com

MOTHER’S DAY
Up and down the Keys, local kids are getting set to honor their mom — maybe breakfast in bed, maybe a homemade card or a handful of flowers — on Sunday, May 8. Here’s a selection of Key West and Lower Keys moms and their progeny.
Many locals recognize Adele Williams’ distinctive Aussie’s accent. But her two daughters know her best of all — Lily Magidson, 16, and Story Magidson, 18, quote Maya Angelou, "to describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power.”

Nicole Kenny, teacher and mother of two, always has a smile. Her daughter Erin said, “She’s a good teacher, a good cook and helps me with my homework.” And Kevin, 6, said “I like my Mom. She is very sweet.”
Chrissy Clapp, teacher and artist, surrounds herself with children. From painting their faces to making them fascinators. But her daughter Josephine Clapp, 6, is the one who is always by her side. JoJo wishes her Mom a Happy Mother’s day: “She is so sweet and kind. I love you, Mom.”
Lynda Woods spends her time helping others — she counsels the incarcerated and also kids at school, and she gives everyone her full attention. But she gives her heart to beloved son Kai, 5. And Kai loves his mom most of all. He said, “My Mom makes me happy, she plays with me, tickles me, and I like her music.”

Rachel Grace has a true love of music. When not teaching kids to sing in Key West, she is feeding her brood, Raquel Martinez, 9, and Ryan Martinez, 11, “She’s the best mom ever. Every week we have Macaroni Monday and Taco Tuesday. And she is always there for us,” they said.
Josephine Kemp, owner of 915 Restaurant, is mother to Charly, 7, and Molly, 1. You can find her running the Seven Mile Bridge in record time or running the hippest restaurant in town, but she is still number one to her daughter. “She’s the best Mom any little girl can have,” said Charly.
Nicole Berger, owner of Paradise Tennis in Key West, has a fivemonth-old son Kirby. “My favorite thing about being a mom is laughing and smiling with Kirby and singing silly songs. We are going to Montana for Mother's Day to spend time with grandma and my twin sister, who is a first-time mom, too.”
Beatrice Vergano’s lovely French accent captures the hearts of many, but mostly her daughter’s. Six-year-old Anais said, “I love my mother because she speaks different languages, gives me a lot of toys, brings me to restaurants, teaches me a lot of stuff. My mother is my best friend.”

Vicki Scudder, retired O-3/Captain USAF and now beloved Sigsbee Middle School teacher, loves teaching her son Jack, 6. She helps him collect stuff to build airplanes or work on machines, her love of discarded items gives her son’s imagination the best playground. Aisha Garcia, nurse and mother to Roman, 7, and Ayla, 5, gets the most praise and love from her own mother, Julia. Describing her daughter, Julia says, “Aisha handles a lot, I always thought she was so mature. I love what I see in her as a mother.” Page 25 • Key West Weekly • May 6, 2016

ulia Orofino’s motto is: “Doing everything makes your kids do everything.” And it’s hard to find something Julia hasn’t done with or without her kids or her grandkids. Julia and her husband of 32 years, Mark, moved to Key West in 1988 to develop Wisteria Island as an ecological site for oysters farms, of all things. When that fell through, they stayed to raise their three kids. Her two daughters still live in Key West. Aisha Garcia, 32, is a nurse at Dr. Ward’s office and Gigi, 26, is a dental hygienist, who still lives at home and shares a car with her mom. Her son Roman, 28, is an engineer in Miami and frequently returns home for weekends.
Presently, Julia is helping to raise her grandkids, Aisha’s Roman Ray, 7, and Ayla, 5. Dedicated to family, she gave up her job teaching P.E. at Mary Immaculate to be with her grandkids full time so Aisha could return to work. Julia recalls their younger years in Key West. “We had the greatest fun. We did everything every week, every tourist site to every kid event. It was wonderful.” Now, she has continued the tradition with her grandkids including going to the library children’s hour on Fridays. “I have been going to that for 28 years. Attending as a grandma it’s awesome, because then I get to meet the younger women.” But Julia isn’t old. At 64, she rivals any teenager in her hobbies and activities. She travels to her native Australia, born outside of Sydney, once a year and spends one month surfing in Costa Rica every year. “I started surfing at 52 and got hooked. I’d like to try kiteboarding but I don’t know if they’d take a woman my age,” she said, laughing. But between tennis, CrossFit and yoga, it seems anything is possible. From bridge club once a week, lunch with her “lunch bunch,” to her business painting animal portraits, Julia shows her kids and her grandkids that doing everything at any age is possible.

Born in Florida and raised in Ohio, Jason Koler is the “better looking and way smarter” Keys Weekly publisher. When not chasing his children or rubbing his wife’s feet, he enjoys folding laundry and performing experimental live publishing.
JASON KOLER/Keys Weekly
JASON KOLER
n Tuesday morning, the Monroe County Sheriff reported nine Cuban migrants arriving to the U.S. at MM 96.4. “All in good condition,” read the statement. Some 90 miles away, the first U.S. cruise ship to visit the island nation in more than 50 years was making its way from Havana to Cienfuegos to Santiago de Cuba. Politics aside, the imagery of 700, dumpling-shaped cruise ship passengers disembarking in Havana with their cameras and fanny packs fills me with dread. I am not expressing a political opinion when I say this country is about to be corrupted. Corrupted by the impatience of spoiled U.S. travelers. We all know the big corporations are drooling over the Malecon like a pack of wild dogs salivating over a raw steak, but the biggest threat to this country is the rudeness and arrogance of entitled American tourists. They will undoubtedly find the El Floridita — the cradle of the daiquiri where the bartenders take their time serving the potent limey cocktail in a martini glass. “This is too strong,” I can hear them now. “Aren’t they supposed to be strawberry?” “I want a Bud Light.” Then I see them hit Sloppy Joe’s — only to be disappointed with they discover the only merchandise available here is rum. No “cool” Hemingway-themed T-shirts with Havana printed proudly on the front. Hopefully the bartenders will suggest, “Try the Santiago, 11 años … it’s the real Mejia.” The aged rum is served best straight out of the bottle with no accouterments like Coke, lime or ice. This rum should be enjoyed properly – with the peacocks in the lobby of the Hotel Conde de Villanueva. There, in the open air courtyard you can slice a millimeter from the cigar handrolled just a floor above and enjoy the coolness of the fauna and tiled floors. My advice is this: call Larry Benvenuti and get to Cuba now. I saw prices spike in the span of 10 months in 2015 and although the chicken McNuggets, Starbucks and Holiday Inns may not appear for a few years — the singularity that comes with a country sequestered for more than 60 years is coming to an end.
