GUNS IN THE KEYS A look at purchasing and shooting a weapon in the Florida Keys Hays Blinckmann
G
un ownership has been on the rise in the past decade in the Florida Keys. While there might be many reasons to own a gun, two recurring ones are the need for self-protection and a fear the federal government will ban the sale of all guns. Keys residents are buying guns, and in many cases multiples, and obtaining concealed weapons permits faster than any other county in Florida. According to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, violent crime has decreased since 1995. However, because of how crimes are categorized it’s difficult to know how many incidents involved the use of guns. For example, a crime may be deemed violent but the weapon could have been a beer bottle or a gun. Or a burglary may be categorized as an armed burglary because a gun was present, but not necessarily brandished. The Monroe County’s Sheriff’s office has documented one, maybe two, home invasions a year since 2008 according to MCSO’s Becky Herrin. Key West Police spokesperson Alyson Crean said, “There were 36 burglaries of occupied residences in 2015. However, we categorize an occupied burglary as

any type of theft when people are home. That means even a bike stolen off the porch would be included in this category.” In September of 2015, a Big Pine Key man shot to death another man who was trying to force his way into the house in what was allegedly a domestic dispute. He was not charged with a crime as it was deemed a “stand your ground” scenario by the State Attorney. Mark Senmartin owns Cash Flow Jewelry and Pawn in Marathon. (He is also the city’s elected mayor). He has been licensed to sell guns for seven years. “In order to even find out the dealer’s cost, I had to be licensed. So when I got into this, I didn’t even know if it was going to be profitable,” he said. Diligence is key when it comes to weapons sales and Senmartin is always on the look out for those attempting to make an illegal “straw purchase,” for another person who is not qualified to own a gun. (See more about authorized sellers in the sidebar.) Who is buying the guns? “Just your average regular citizen, really,” Senmartin said. “I have the group that wants something for protection, or the group that are collectors and are looking for something very specific. And then more recently, the group who is worried that their right to own a gun will be taken away and wants to purchase a gun before that happens; they don’t make

Since the inception of the National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) in 2014, the federal government has performed 202,536,522 checks. In that time, it has denied 1,166,676 transactions.

THE LAW • Who can’t own a gun? Convicted felons, those convicted of a misdemeanor or domestic violence, and those who have been deemed mentally defective in a court or committed to mental institution. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the agency performing the background checks, may also deny the sale to a person arrested for one of 22 “dangerous” crimes ranging from extortion to controlled substance violations. • When purchasing a gun, a buyer has two options. First, to seek a registered and licensed Federal Firearm Licensed gun dealer who is “engaged in the business” of selling guns. Also, used firearms may also be bought and sold privately by an unlicensed seller. An unlicensed seller is categorized as someone who does not make the majority of their livelihood from gun sales and is not required to impose a waiting period or background check. President Barack Obama recently issued new executive actions that further restrict unlicensed sellers to less than two sales in certain circumstances in order to qualify. • Gun purchasers, including those with a “carry” license, must pass a background check every time they purchase from a FFL licensee. That is true for purchasers of handguns or long guns. Persons 18 and older may purchase a long gun, defined as a shotgun or rifle, without a waiting period. Only persons 21 and older may purchase handguns and the purchase includes a 72-hour waiting period. • Florida has no laws regulating the sale of “assault weapons” other than those listed above.

(CONT.) up a huge percentage, but it is more than it used to be.” Senmartin said he works to “match” the gun to the owner. “Ultimately, I will sell them what they want. But if you have an older woman that doesn’t have a lot of hand strength, and can’t work a slide, I steer her towards a revolver. I want them to have the best option. That’s just customer service.” In addition to selling guns, Senmartin also offers firearm education. He is a licensed NRA instructor able to provide certification classes for concealed weapon ownership. Senmartin’s classes are a three-hour classroom seminar about gun safety, handling and cleaning, and more importantly, gun laws. Senmartin teaches from the book; “Florida Firearms Law, Use and Ownership.” Then he takes the class to the shooting range to continue safety and responsibility when handling and shooting a gun. In 2014, a Big Pine backyard range garnered national attention. When Doug Varrieur used his yard on a busy canal as a gun range, he was completely within his rights. However, public outcry prompted a change to the law. Gov. Rick Scott signed bill SB 130 last July, which prohibits the recreational discharge of a firearm in certain residential areas, specifically in areas “that the person knows or reasonably should know is primarily residential in nature and that has a residential density of one or more dwelling units per acre.” Phillip Condella, owner of the Big Coppitt Gun Club, said he sees a mixture of clientele, about 25 percent women and up to 10 percent overseas visitors during season. The club offers free safety and instruction when entering the range and private lessons are always available. Staff checks the ammunition because steel cores are not allowed. “We are not going to let people treat guns with a casual air,” said Condella, adding that staff absolutely refuses access to anyone who seems intoxicated or under the influence. Condella sums up the essence of safe and lawful gun possession: “Anyone who owns a gun should know how to use it. Safety is a priority.”

Maggie Sayer is both a fantastic computer geek and an incredible portrait photographer. She’s also a mom. “I remember the first day being home from the hospital when Fisher was sleeping and I was beyond exhausted but wanted to stay awake so I could watch him breathe,” she said.
Laura Kasper, mother of two boys Kelly and Kasey, said reality raised its head on more than one occasion. “I wore two different color shoes to work. Or I looked forward to the Cookie Monster segment of Sesame Street like it was a daily soap opera, and played it back on the DVD when my husband came home just so I could relate to another adult.”
“When everyone left my hospital room and I was alone with my baby, I suddenly realized ‘Wait a minute, I’m in charge here,’” said Jessica Bennet, mom to Genevieve and Richard. “The reality is, motherhood is like a job were you show up for your first day of work in the mailroom and instead you’re escorted to your new office as the CEO. Good luck and don’t screw it up.”
“So Let me tell you when it REALLY hits home: the learner’s permit. Yep, teen driving,” said Melanie Wilson, mother of Blake and Gus. “This adventure is super fun! And by super fun I mean most nerve-racking! It is at this moment when you say to yourself, ‘Self, I hope you were a good mom and that your child listened because he/she is all grown up.’ And that realization is the scariest of all.”

arathon’s new City Hall is swarming with workers putting the finishing touches on the under-budget $5.5 million edifice. The terrazzo entry is complete, but the hanging light fixtures are still in boxes. The tile floors are down, and the administration areas still await carpet. In the “trailers,” which city staff currently occupies, tension of the I-can’twait-to-move variety is rising. In fact, the monitors on Libby Frazier’s desk in the Utilities Department are already marked for the move. “The furniture will be in by the first of June,” said City Manager Chuck Lindsey. But don’t expect a grand opening until the end of summer, he said. Not until the trailers have been removed, parking lot completed and landscaping installed; probably some time in August. Here’s a sneak peak. —Weekly Staff report

Winning contestants walk away with gift cards, bragging rights By Kristen Livengood
W
ith creative team names, mostly all unmentionable in this family newspaper, teams from one to many wager points during six, three-question rounds on Wednesdays from at 6 to 8 p.m. at Keys Fisheries, and from 9 to 11 p.m. at Marathon Grill and Ale House. Locally, it’s known as “Trivia Night” in Marathon. “It’s good to have someone on your team with a wealth of useless knowledge in their head,” said Ale House reigning champ Robert Hunt from team Netflix and Chill – made up of Kacey Mearns, Rodney Altman and a rotating fourth member. Hunt is that person whose head is packed with random facts; he used to play trivia in college.
Conferring with his teammate, he came to the conclusion that his team has been in the tops for the past six months, give or take, if they were present. Last week gave them a run for their money when an attorney from Ft. Myers almost took home first place by a couple of points. “That was a close call,” said Hunt. Anagrams are his team’s favorite question, played at half time. The teams are handed words to de-scramble into a famous person’s name. Last week the words were RAD MEN SALAD. It took team Netflix and Chill less than a minute to figure it out (Adam Sandler). Other categories include things like sports and geography. Jeanine Christiansen and Chelsey Stewart started playing months ago, but acquired directorial duties when the position was suddenly vacated. “We learn all sorts of random trivia,” said Jeanine. The hosting restaurants offer gift cards to the top three teams at the end of the night as well as happy hour and drink specials during play. “Plus, teams get a five point bonus for buying a round of drinks for their team,” said Jeanine. Hunt says he will gladly take on any challengers next week at the Ale House. Marty Dailey has been holding onto the top spot at Keys Fisheries. Both are Marathon High School graduates.

ver at Pro Fades barbershop, the familiar buzzing of hair clippers is usually drowned out by laughter, music and movies. The shop takes a unique approach to customer satisfaction with its comfortably designed layout. Guests can enjoy a movie while waiting on a comfortable couch, or listen to music while they wait for a trim. The shop has two televisions, two couches, trendy art lining the walls, and four fully equipped barber chairs for guests. Marathon’s Alberto Sanchez started Pro fades in 2012. After working at another shop for a number of years, his interest in operating his own shop grew until he made the entrepreneurial leap. Sanchez recalls a period when Pro Fades was one chair, a handful of tools, one television, and himself. “One of the hardest parts about growing the business has been finding talented barbers,” Sanchez said. “Thankfully, I had a lot of help and support from Stephanie Flores to stay focused and keep
motivated.” After six months barber Roger Hernandez joined the staff at Pro Fades. Sanchez then opened a second shop and hired Carlos Quintana to operate it. Eventually both shops, and the three barbers, consolidated into the current location at 6363 Overseas Highway next to MetroPCS. His favorite part of being a local business owner is having a lot of face time with clients. “We lacked options for barbershops in town that specialize in styles we cater to,” he said. The shop specializes in fades, blow outs, flat tops, military style hair-cuts, seniors and kids cuts, razor shaves and designs. They also offer women’s cuts for ladies looking for a more modern look. “The service at Pro Fades is friendly and upbeat,” said Francisco Santistevan of American Caribbean Realty. “You are always acknowledged when you come in. My haircuts always come out looking sharp,” Pro Fades is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and walk-ins are welcome.

n Tuesday morning,Keys the County Sheriff RVMonroe condominium park, 1BR/1BA unit with dock. Fix it or reported nine Cuban migrants arriving to the replace it with a modular. U.S. at MM 96.4. $74,900. ML# 561572 “All in good condition,” read the statement. Some 90 miles away, the first U.S. cruise ship to visit the island nation in more than 50 years was making its way from Havana to Cienfuegos to Santiago de Cuba. Politics aside, the imagery of 700, dumpling-shaped cruise ship passengers disembarking in Havana with their cameras and fanny packs fills me with dread. I am not expressing a political opinion when I say this country is about to be corrupted. Corrupted by the impatience of spoiled U.S. travelers. We all know the big corporations are drooling over the Malecon like a pack of wild dogs salivating over a raw steak, but the biggest threat to this country is the rudeness and arrogance of entitled American tourists. They will undoubtedly find the El Floridita — the cradle of the daiquiri where the bartenders take their time serving the potent limey cocktail in a martini glass. “This is too strong,” I can hear them now. “Aren’t they supposed to be strawberry?” “I want a Bud Light.” Then I see them hit Sloppy Joe’s — only to be disappointed with they discover the only merchandise available here is rum. No “cool” Hemingway-themed T-shirts with Havana printed proudly on the front. Hopefully the bartenders will suggest, “Try the Santiago, 11 años … it’s the real Mejia.” The aged rum is served best straight out of the bottle with no accouterments like Coke, lime or ice. This rum should be enjoyed properly – with the peacocks in the lobby of the Hotel Conde de Villanueva. There, in the open air courtyard you can slice a millimeter from the cigar handrolled just a floor above and enjoy the coolness of the fauna and tiled floors. My advice is this: call Larry Benvenuti and get to Cuba now. I saw prices spike in the span of 10 months in 2015 and although the chicken McNuggets, Starbucks and Holiday Inns may not appear for a few years — the singularity that comes with a country sequestered for more than 60 years is coming to an end.

MOTHER’S DAY
Mama T.T. reigns on Picton Hill Marathon lady fostered dozens of children, touched the lives of countless others By Sara Matthis
SARA MATTHIS/Keys Weekly
C
ora Lee Picton, 90, is preparing a feast for Mother’s Day that will be celebrated in the family compound on 41st Street, surrounded by a daughter, Sandy Williams, on one side and a nephew, Melvin Matlock, on the other plus tons of other family members and friends. “Chickens, ribs, I don’t know what all we’re going to have,” she said. Known to all as Mama T.T., Cora has fostered dozens of children in Marathon, both officially and unofficially. She said she can’t remember how many, maybe 35, and “not all one brand” she said of the mixed races that include African Americans, whites, Dominicans and Cubans. She has one birth child and three adopted children — Sandy, Tonya, Tanya and Shirley — but these days she doesn’t make many distinctions. “Lots of kids came in and out. I remember that,” she said. Her home, located in the shadow of the St. Paul AME Church, is known as Picton Hill. It’s a landmark for locals. Marathon Recreation Center’s Anthony Culver has a long-standing relationship with Cora. “I remember calling her up and asking, ‘Mama T.T., are you going to make the potato pies on Sunday?” he said, laughing. “But anybody that was hungry could come to Picton Hill.” Those who didn’t know Mama T.T. from the neighborhood, or the church, knew her from her 20-year tenure as a cook at Marathon High School.
Cora Lee Picton is known as Mama T.T. to the brood of children she fostered and raised.
At the time it was one of the only commercial kitchens. She cooked for the high school students, of course, but also the elementary students and the senior center where food was delivered by van. She set about establishing her authority on the very first day when she banished a big, shirtless boy. “I told him, ‘Go get your shirt on before you come in here,” Cora said. “If you don’t get control when you first start, you don’t need to worry about getting it later — because you won’t.” Of course, her big heart and sense of fair play won those same “big” kids over. She always managed to find a way to sneak them a larger portion than was strictly allowed. During the busy foster years, she relied on the help of her husband James “Pop” Picton. He was charged with watching the pots and maintaining law and order. Cora laughs when she said he found more than one use for the Bible in keeping control. “They kept us all on the straight and narrow,” Culver said with fondness. One time, when a bunch of her preteens decided they needed a taste of freedom, they snuck out — Cora Lee Picton the window only to be picked up by officers on the Seven Mile Bridge. After receiving the Sheriff’s call, Cora instructed the officers to “keep them.” Another call came through shortly after. “They told me, ‘Ms. Cora, you got to come down here and quiet ’em. They won’t try to run away again. After that, there was no more trouble,” she said, smiling. Cora acknowledges it’s different raising kids these days. But her advice to new moms is the same as the heavenly counsel that helped her deal with her own brood. “Stay on your knees. You have to,” she said.
“I love to dance. I’d go 100 miles to a dance.”

Three-year-old Tyler is looking forward to spending the day at the park with mom Brenda Hill. “Maybe even a boat day at the sandbar if the weather is good,” said Brenda.

Charity Reginelli is due in August and can’t wait to share all of her childhood past times growing up in the Keys while raising her son. “We will be living the island life, boating and fishing, and most of all paddle boarding,” she said.
Elba, a server at Castaway Restaurant, and Melanie, a senior at Marathon High School, are huge fans of their mom Guiselle. “She is our biggest cheerleader and no matter how crazy or ridiculous we are, she’s always there for us,” said Elba Ornelas. “She’s a great mom because she doesn’t rest until we have everything. She is always there to push us when we need it.”

MOTHER’S DAY After taking grandma/mom Ginger Sayer to brunch, moms Maggie Sayer and MP Coleman are looking to relaxing the rest of the day on Mother’s Day. MP says her favorite part of being mom to Fisher, 10, and Cullen, 6, is celebrating their successes, although, she joked, she could do without having to get clay out of the white baseball pants. Maggie says she loves the “firsts” — first book, first hit, first race.

Natalie Ardis, 31 weeks pregnant, says it’s a surreal feeling knowing she will be a mom shortly and is looking forward to a couple kicks from Baby A on Sunday while at brunch with her mom Julie Johnson. “I just can’t wait to meet this little angel,” she said. “I know she is going to fill our hearts with so much love and joy.”
“I just love to see how excited he gets about learning new things,” said Julie, while watching seven-year-old Jonas at tennis practice at Marathon Community Park. Jonas told The Weekly he plans on surprising his mom with breakfast, maybe, and definitely a lot of kisses.

SUMMER ESSENTIALS FOR KEYS LIVING
Styles to be showcased at fashion show
O
n Thursday, May 12, Islamorada will be turning up the heat with their Sizzling Summer Fashion Show at The Village Square at the Trading Post. The fashion show will feature summer fashions from Miss Monroe Boutique, D-Luxe Boutique, Island Trendz Boutique, Otherside Boardsports, and Mayu Boutique. Below are a few of my favorite summer must-have’s that will be highlighted at the fashion show. FOR WOMEN • Scarf Dress. Lightweight, easy-to-wear dresses are a summer staple for every fashionista. The key is to find designs that are effortlessly chic. The colorful hand LEAH MAKI block printed fabrics on the scarf dresses A fashion-obsessed by Roberta Frymann style Keys blogger, will keep you cool all formerly from Minsummer long. Slip it nesota. Her current infatuations include on over a swimsuit during the day or statement pieces, dramatic heels, red wear it through the lipstick and vintage night in style. Startcostume jewelry. ing at $155 at Mayu Visit LeahsFabulousBoutique within the Finds.com for more Moorings Village and of her musings. Spa at 123 Beach Road in Islamorada. • Custom Swimsuits. Danielle Pierog, the owner of D-Luxe Boutique, just launched her own swimwear line with hand picked fabrics and custom designs. D-Luxe Swim by Danielle includes a variety of styles and coverage options in tropical prints, brights and neons, classic black and exotic snakeskin. The best part about her suits are the attention that went into the detailing with braiding, strappy sides and gorgeous backs. D-Luxe Swim by Danielle suits range from $40 to $50 per piece and can be found at D-Luxe Boutique at 80925 Overseas Highway in Islamorada. • Bright Jewelry. Let your accessories make the statement this summer with bright hued tassel necklaces. You can find these necklaces at Miss Monroe Boutique located at 81868 Overseas Highway in Islamorada.
Bright jewelry is especially appropriate for summer, and tassle pendants are big.
FOR MEN • Hybrid Shorts. Functional and stylish, hybrid shorts are made to be versatile. Fast drying, lightweight fabric, belt loops and mesh pockets make for easy wear shorts from beach to bar or surf to turf. Casual yet stylish, you can’t go wrong with a pair of hybrid shorts. Hybrid shorts are available from a variety of brands and start at $44 at Otherside Boardsports at 82758 Overseas Highway in Islamorada. • Distinctive Men’s Shirts. Every man needs a nice dress shirt to wear to dinner or a night on the town. Envy men’s shirts up the ante with a distinctive collection of vibrant men’s shirts cut from the finest European limited edition fabrics. Their original prints, contrasting accents on the cuffs and collar, top stitching, double button detailing provide a shirt unlike any you’ve likely seen. Trade in your classic white button up for an Envy shirt that is sure to impress. Envy shirts range from $115 to $130 and are available at Island Trendz Boutique within the Amara Cay Resort at 80001 Overseas Highway in Islamorada.
Even in the Keys, guys need that one good, stylish shirt that pops.
The third annual Sizzling Summer Fashion Show is set for Thursday, May 12 at The Village Square at the Trading Post in Islamorada. The gates and pop-up shops will open at 5:30 p.m. with the fashion show starting at 7 p.m. and will include complimentary drinks, taco bar from Bad Boy Burrito, and summer tunes by DJ Marissa Sardar. MMS STUDENT OF THE WEEK Faculty and students at Marathon High School/Marathon Middle School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly. What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS and why are they important to you? I am involved in junior varsity soccer and its important to me because it’s been my favorite sport for as long as I can remember. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MMS and why? My biggest inspiration has been Ms. Coleman because I probably wouldn’t know anything about math if I didn’t have her as a teacher. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I think civics class has best prepared me for life after high school because I have learned so much about politics and presidential leaders. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? Technology has become much more advanced than it was when my parents grew up. What advice would you give to a sixth grader entering middle school? I would tell them not to freak out. As long as you keep up on classwork and behave well, you’ll be fine. What movie character do you most identify with or would most like to be? I would say I’m most like Thomas from “Maze Runner” because he went from being an outcast to being a great friend and leader. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? I think affordable housing is a big challenge here, and we could meet this by creating new homes for people who can’t afford some of the places down here. If you could advise the President of the United States on one thing, what would it be? I would advise the president to help more countries in need after a natural disaster or horrible incident. What are your plans after high school? I want to go to college and play soccer, but also do well in my classes. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to be the best person I can be, and to wear sunblock!

The a/c struggling with the return of hot nights in the Keys? Try a bedfan — vastly different from a bed pan. The fan comes in two heights to reach under the covers and blow a soft stream of fresh air under the sheets making them “hover.” It’s built in America and uses 80 percent American-made parts. This version of The Bedfan claims to be the original and is much more economical than its Brookstone’s counterpart. $85 @ amazon.com

BEERGOGGLES For years, wine drinkers have been showing off with their adorable little charms on the wine glass stem to proclaim ownership. Now beer drinkers can do the same with a set of “beer goggles” by Gama Go. Don’t worry about losing your beer again, even when your Cousin Larry, the beer hog, is visiting. The bottle garnishes are sold by the half dozen and are made of plastic. (They might snap, though, so order extra, which is doable at this price point — $10.) Order them on amazon.com or stop by Target to pick them up. $10 or less

Porky’s Bayside
G
eorge Baker has been in the Keys since 2014 and came into town like a lot of others when a friend said, “I can get you a job and you have a place to stay.” Baker jumped on the opportunity to make the move from upstate New York. “It’s been heaven ever since,” he said while tending bar at Porky’s Bayside Restaurant and Marina. “I get to meet all kinds of interesting people from all different walks of life.” His drink of choice to serve at Porky’s is the Twisted Tea because he can pour it over rocks and it’s good to go. Another favorite is the Porky’s Punch. He says both go well with the ribs, which is his favorite thing on the menu, and followed closely by the North Carolina pulled pork and unbeatable burgers and onion rings. When he isn’t working, he is making the rounds listening to music – his top three are Tim Dee, Tony Napoli, and Mark Davis. He was also excited about being featured in the paper. “This will be the first time I’m in the paper for something good,” he said jokingly. Porky’s is located on the west end of town, bayside, at 1410 Overseas Highway.

Digital Guitars and the guitarists who play them Using one’s digits to turn thought into music on a totally awesome instrument
K
eyboardists have all the fun. Up until rather recently, when it comes to digital music technology, keyboardists have been the main beneficiaries in terms of their actual instruments. Just slap a keyboard (even an 88note weighted, like a piano) together with a motherboard and some chips, and the keyboardist has the virtual orchestra at his fingertips. This is all courtesy of digital recording (sampling), synthesis algorithms, and cheap RAM/ROM memory. Keyboards can be violins. Keyboards can be horns. Keyboards can be basses. Keyboards can be drums. Keyboards can be, well, other keyboards (like organs, pianos, harpsichords, electric pianos, etc.). Keyboards can even be voices and guitars. One sure way to piss off the guitarist in the band is for the keyboard player to start playing a guitar part on the keyboard at some point during the song. Flautists, string players, drummers, and brass/reed instrumentalists also aren’t all that happy with keyboardists. Common criticisms from masters of their own particular instruments usually revolve around the fact that the keyboard-based emulation doesn’t have the expressiveness, the timbre, or the true sound of the actual instrument. And the critics are absolutely correct. It’s just that most of the music-listening public doesn’t care at all whether the violin sound came from a finger pressing down a string or a finger pressing down a key. For point of clarification, I’m primarily a guitarist. Give me six or twelve strings stretched at high tension over a resonating chamber made from spruce and rosewood. Or give me six strings stretched over a beautiful hunk of solid ash with three magnetic pickups connected to an amplifier powered by tubes (yes, tubes, like those in TV sets from the ’50s and ‘60s). Next to drummers (who beat things to make music), guitarists are usually the Luddites of the band.
Latest and greatest? Not bloody likely! Vintage is a real buzzword for guitarists who usually believe the JOHN older it is, BARTUS the better is a City Council it has to member and a sound. former Mayor of the Also for City of Marathon. point of John is also a musician who performs clarificaaround town at tion, I’m a various establishkeyboardist. ments. I love pressing down a key and hearing horns and strings and flutes and pianos and drums. Just not guitars so much. Anyway, technology is finally offering guitarists some of the tonal options that keyboardists
have had. And I’m not referring to MIDI guitars (those guitars that can transform their string vibrations into MIDI signals that can be used to trigger keyboards and sound modules). Through modeling technology, the sounds of different amplifiers, effects, and actual guitars can be convincingly recreated for stage and studio. (And I bet you thought modeling technology is what Vanna White used to turn all those letters around!) For several years, I have been using a guitar called the Variax, made by the Line 6 Corporation. The Variax is an actual guitar, with strings and wood—in other words, a perfectly suitable user interface. The technology part comes into play as the string vibrations are turned into digital signals, and then processed through internal modeling algorithms to recreate the sounds of vari-
ous guitars — more than 25 of them, to be exact. Inside the Variax are a plethora of electric solidbody, semi-solid, hollowbody jazz, and resophonic guitars, as well as acoustic six- and twelve-string guitars, a banjo, and an electric sitar! Fender, Gibson, Guild, Martin, Gretsch,
Rickenbacker, Dobro, National, Epiphone—they’re all in there! Some of the models are more realistic than others, although there aren’t any unusable ones. I’ve been a Fender Stratocaster player for decades, and the Strat model on the Variax nails the tone. To the bloody wall.
To our BUYERS and SELLERS. We hope you enjoy your new homes.
