UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / MAY 6, 2016 By Gabriel Sanchez Mother’s Day shouldn’t be the only occasion we take to reflect on all the wonderful things moms do. It’s been said that with motherhood comes a transition that’s guided by an indescribable sense of love and selflessness. Moms are there to feed, console, teach, and save us from life’s hard times. We owe a large part of who we become to them, for better or worse, and when we fall down, they are the first to pick us up. There are plenty of reasons that they’re are crucial in our lives, listing them would take the sort of patience only a mother has. So take to make things a big simpler, we asked …

Flagler’s Folly celebrates anniversary Young professionals preserving Keys history By Jason Koler

A

hundred years ago, the determined oil tycoon Henry Morrison Flagler was criticized for thinking he could link mainland Florida with Key West with a railroad spanning 126 miles of coral rock, mosquitoes and open water. History has shown that the detractors who coined “Flagler’s Folly” were wrong in their assessment and today the phrase serves as inspiration to a group of equally ambitious Upper Keys professionals. “This man's vision left an indelible mark on our community and the progression of our collective story,” penned the founding mothers of the Flagler’s Folly Society, a 501-c3 organization. Spearheaded by cousins Emily Griffin Carter and Erin Muir, with Liz Huddleston, the group is commemorating the oneyear anniversary with a cocktail party to raise funds for a permanent exhibit at the Florida Keys History and Discovery Center. The talk is titled “Lilly Pulitzer: How the Florida Keys Inspired An Icon” and is scheduled for Thursday, May 26. It’s billed as “an evening of sipping in the company of friends, shopping at a Lily Pop-Up store” and includes a special presentation by Key West Art and Historical Society curator Cozi Convertito. The FKHDC functions like a parent to the Follies – giving the young members a purpose to mix merriment with history. Muir says the idea for the historical society was born from her commitment to preserve the rich, cultural heritage of her ancestors who settled in the Upper Keys before Flagler brought his train to the islands. “My grandfather is one of few remaining people who survived the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane,” boasts the sixthgeneration Albury. Her clan settled in Planter (now Tavernier) back in the 1860s and her linage includes such notables as legendary fishing captain Rodney Albury. The celebrated captain famously fished President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and is featured in the “Legends of the Line” series at the FKHDC. Since incorporating last year, one of the group’s most popular events is the Hungry for History lecture series that mixes local folklore with libations in

Former Green Turtle waitresses Louise Wilson and Shirley Hamilton (in the day, today) spoke to Flagler’s Folly Society at a recent event, top.

Author and FIU professor Les Standiford will speak about his research for “Last Train to Paradise: Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad that Crossed an Ocean” on Wednesday, May 25 at the History and Discovery Center. For reservations, call 305.922.2237.

historic locations throughout the Upper Keys. They have networked at Key Largo Fisheries where the Hill brothers (Tom and Rick) spoke of the commercial fishing industry. Earlier this year, the gang gathered at the Green Turtle Inn for a colorful talk with two waitresses who worked at the landmark eatery in the late ’40s and early ’50s. To join, members pledge $250 in dues that grants them access to the lectures, free admission to the FKHDC, funding a new exhibit and other benefits. The proceeds from the May 26 party are earmarked for the “Upper Keys Communities” exhibit. According to FKHDC Curator Brad Bertelli the new display tells how the communities of Matacumbe, Planter and Rock Harbor transformed into Islamorada, Tavernier and Key Largo. The $60,000 exhibit will be partially funded by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, Flagler’s Follies Society, and private donations.

he Monroe County Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution that expresses the County’s concern of the threat posed to its water supply by the hypersaline plume emanating beyond the boundaries of the cooling canal system at Florida Light and Power Company’s Turkey Point nuclear facility. “We need to keep the pressure on,” Monroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy said. The plume threatens the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s Florida City wellfields, which provide potable water to the Florida Keys from water drawn from the Biscayne Aquifer. Those wellfields are less than 10 miles from Turkey Point. At the Board of County Commissioner’s Special Meeting on April 13, the Commissioners voted to send a letter to Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez to express Monroe County’s “mutual interests in protecting our shared environmental and water resources. “We are hopeful that opening a dialogue will result in more substantial progress on ameliorating the problems associated with [cooling canal system] operations.” The Monroe County resolution passed on Wednesday also encourages FKAA to take all necessary steps to protect the County’s potable water supply and the wellfields and expresses the County’s willingness to provide material support to the FKAA

to enhance its current protective efforts. The resolution also is part of an eight-point action plan to address the plume, which the Commission agrees does not pose an immediate threat to the Keys’ water supply but needs to be dealt with now to prevent future problems. “This is the environment you are dealing with,” Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers said. “It doesn’t turn around on a dime.” The action plan includes additional engagement with the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority and other agencies, a joint meeting with Miami-Dade County officials, possible independent analysis of conflicting scientific data, and closely following the Oct. 6, 2015 consent agreement entered into by the Miami-Dade County’s Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources and FPL.

Turkey Point is the largest powergenerating station in Florida and the sixth largest power plant in the nation.

MOTHER’S DAY

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / MAY 6, 2016

B

eing a Mom is tough stuff. Goodbye to sleep and privacy, and hello to dirty diapers and Barney the Dinosaur. Somehow moms balance the routine of life with the unexpected surprises of motherhood, it’s nothing short of remarkable. My mother, for instance, had no second thoughts in jumping behind the helm of my father’s lobster boat one afternoon, while literally juggling my brother and I, to help get the job done and put food on the table. The world has no shortage of super moms and they deserve all the credit due to them. —Gaby Sanchez, Keys Weekly

Alexeen Simms cuddles sleepy Malachi Thomas, 1, and whispers, “I love having a great companion to share everything with.”

“My favorite part of being a mom is going to activities with him and watching the hard work and practice he puts into the things he loves come to fruition,” said Carolyn DePaula, proud mother of talented sixth grade flutist Brandon DePaula.

Amanda Chavez is the proud mommy of three girls — ages 3, 8, and 14. Her favorite part of motherhood is, “watching them mature and grow into good people.” Pictured with her is the youngest, Rosie Chavez.

Jessica Wilson has two daughters, Emma and Ashley. “The hugs and kisses they give me are the best part of being a mother, they give me so much love,” Jessica said.

“S

uper” is an easy word to affix to Stephanie Scuderi’s many titles, but the one she wears with the most pride is that of “Super Mom.” As an executive for Centennial Bank, she juggles a hectic work schedule with board positions, volunteer hours, advisory positions and gubernatorial appointments. She recently hung another degree — an MBA (with academic excellence, of course) next to her Cornell and Northwestern diplomas. But her world, like so many other moms, revolves around a kid – eight year old Ray. Your Linkedin profile lists eight professional organizations in addition to your full time job. What is your secret for juggling work with volunteering and being a mom? If there’s a secret, mine sits at the intersection of “Everyone Loves Raymond” and “It Takes a Village.” My parents live across the street — among other things, Ray and my mother play piano and cook, Ray and my dad watch the “Three Stooges” and recite Who’s on First. Ray has a tremendous father in Perry and just about everyone at Bud n Mary’s (where Perry keeps his boat) would drop anything for Ray. Add to that my phenomenal circle of friends, any of whom would be available at the drop of a hat if Ray or I needed help. So, there is no secret. I am incredibly grateful to have all this goodness wrapped in a strong, dynamic network of support, chock full of love and humor. I am very, very lucky. Governor Scott appointed you to Florida Keys Community College’s Board of Trustees last February and the college recently received approval to offer a fouryear bachelors degree. You have made it clear that the college should expand its facility in the Upper Keys. What is standing in your way? FKCC has a lot of positive momentum in several directions right now and it’s an exciting time to be part of the college. One example is the Upper Keys facility, the idea of which has received an amazing amount of support from throughout the community. As with everything, it all comes down to location. It’s a matter of finding that perfect spot that provides access, adequate parking, and can feasibly accommodate the needs of the institution.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

SCUDERI

Affordable housing is (once again) a critical issue and you are on the Monroe County Affordable Housing Advisory Committee. If you could rub a magic lamp, what are your three wishes to solve the crisis? One, I wish there was no affordable housing crisis. Bam! Two, as long as we’re resorting to the magic genie, let’s just get rid of the whole NIMBY concept and reality. Poof, it’s gone. Three, please Mr. Magic Genie, I wish my housing committee to be called the Aspirational Housing Council. We’re charged to talk about big, beautiful custom-built, waterfront homes with amazing views and no spending limit.

Eight-year-old Ray is a budding artist. He decorated his mom’s cast with a skiff and a fighter jet. Stehanie Scuderi says it’s the latest in fashion accessories.

JASON KOLER/Keys Weekly

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / MAY 6, 2016

You recently left the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors after four years of service. What advice would you give to an entrepreneur about to embark a new venture in the Florida Keys? Join the chamber and bank with Centennial Bank. You are sporting a sporty, blue cast. What happened? My dogs, Blue and Boom, my son’s scooter, and me — the Islamorada Iditarod. Evidently coordinated mushing is an acquired talent among dogs and humans. So, I broke my thumb but it’s no big deal. Ray drew a skiff and a fighter jet on my cast — coolest accessory in town. On Saturday night, people can find you… … enjoying the stars on my sky deck. On Sunday morning, you are most likely to be…. … making waffles with Ray or brunching with friends. When the cast comes off, I’ll get back to the Sunday yoga class that keeps me sane.

You are most comfortable when… … I’m in my bed. I have the world’s most wonderful bed. The biggest misconception about bankers is… … it’s all true, or it’s all lies. Is this a trick question? Arguments usually… … suck.

Scuderi lives across the street from her parents (Susan Burke, pictured) in the Keys version of ‘Everybody Loves Raymond.’

If you could fight one person alive or dead… … Dead. It keeps the fight brief. Life’s too short to fight. The world needs more… … than we’re giving it. Your boss, Teresa Condas has taught you... … wow, so much. Perhaps not so much "taught me" as changed my perspective, opened my mind, reinforced just about every B-school case study I had on leadership and culture. She’s an amazing lady — it’s honestly my good fortune to work with Teresa. Your son, Ray has taught you… … clarity. Full stop.

This November, you are definitely voting for… … love, respect, and water. The best fish tacos are served at… … Bayside Gourmet, no doubt. The last time you went fishing you caught… … lots of dolphin with the amazing Capt. Skye Stanley on the Blue Heaven. Patti Stanley and John Essligner invited me and it was a fantastic day, a great memory. Which of your buddies are most likely to need bail money? Is this where I take the fifth? Has your life ever been in danger? I don’t think so. My parents might have a different opinion, though. Ketchup, or mustard? Both, and onions, please.

MOTHER’S DAY

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / MAY 6, 2016 Priscilla Johnson’s said her favorite part of being a mommy is, “the love my three girls and two boys give back to me. They can always brighten up my day.”

State Representative Holly Raschein is also a mom to four-year-old Drake. Her ideal Sunday would include hanging out on the boat and “enjoying a fine brunch cooked by my lovely husband.” When asked what having a child has taught her, the legislator gave the bipartisan answer, “That it is truly impossible to talk to a four year old like an adult. However, there is nothing else in the world that I love more!”

Maggie Ames, of Key Largo, loves “the little hugs and kisses I get from my sweet baby boy Benjamin,” who is about to turn two years old.

Nicole Alvarez said she thinks the best part of being a mom is learning to be selfless and patient. “And watching my little girl grow.”

Kristin Giordano wrangles up her two munchkins, Nicole-Elizabeth, 5, and Elizabeth-Nicole, 9, to give them a big hug. “I love watching them grow and learn together,” Kristin said.

Have a story idea? Have a friend or neighbor who accomplished exceptional?

Nine-year-old Emma Leigha has been working on a Mother’s Day program at Island Christian. She says her mom, Courtney, has taught her “pretty much everything I need to know.”

“Everyone says it goes by fast, and they are right because I can’t believe I only have one month left,” exclaims expectant new mom Gina Boilini. The Docs Diner owner is expecting her first child, a boy, with Frank Navarro to arrive on June 2. “It has been a very, very cool experience being pregnant,” she added. “Way better than I thought it would be. Just pure joy.” Boilini is the daughter of Mary and Jim Boilini and she and Frank plan to raise their young brood in the Upper Keys. This Sunday, she will, of course, be working at Docs and then spend the rest of the day with her mom, Mary.

Jill Miranda Baker has her Mother’s Day planned out — hanging on the boat with Mason, 15, and Raffie, 14.

hether you stop by to enjoy the views of the bay at sunset, or dance alongside the Bohemian Junkanoo Band under the full moon, it’s always a great occasion to have Alana Robles make you the signature “Morada Bay Margarita.” Made with Souza Tequilla, Cointreau, and a Grand Marnier floater, this fresh libation combines the zest of muddled lime and orange with Morada Bay’s homemade sour mix and is presented (ingeniously) in a 32-ounce mason jar. Robles has a deft touch: the perfect balance of citrus and sour mix. “The amount of effort we put in our house ingredients really makes the difference,” she said. Alana started visiting the Keys five years ago. She worked seasonally at first, until she became enamored with the environment and water and decided to make Islamorada her permanent home. “It was the ocean that convinced me to stay, once I began diving and spear fishing. I fell in love with so many aspects of the community,” she said. When she isn’t pouring tasty concoctions, Alana can be found hunting down lionfish or playing underwater hockey at Jacob’s Aquatics on Wednesday night. “It’s so much fun, and a great work out. There isn’t a lot of rough play like regular hockey, but there is plenty of incidental contact,” she laughed. Morada Bay Café is located at 81600 Overseas Highway, in Islamorada.

Faculty and students at Coral Shores High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Weekly Newspapers.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Coral Shores High School and why are they important to you? I am involved in many organizations at Coral Shores High School. I am a member of National Honor Society and Key Club as well as President and Founder of the Environmental Club, Vice President of Science National Honor Society, Treasurer of Interact Club, and the Varsity Volleyball Captain. All of these activities are important to me because they keep me busy and keep me involved in the high school. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Coral Shores High School and why? Mrs. Rehmann has been my biggest inspiration at Coral Shores High School. She is the sponsor of the Environmental Club and has helped me make the club as successful as it can be. With her help, the club donated $500 to the Turtle Hospital in Marathon and $500 to the Costal Steward Foundation in Islamorada. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Given the opportunity to have an internship at the local Sherriff’s Office has prepared me the best for my life after high school. I would like to go

into law enforcement and, with the internship, I was able to gain a lot of knowledge about the profession and details on all the different areas of the agency. Do you tweet? Who do you follow on Twitter? I do tweet. I follow friends and volleyball accounts. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenges facing the Keys are all the tourists coming to the Keys and leaving it way worse than they found it with all their left over garbage from the weekend. I would volunteer every weekend and go to different areas of the Keys to do highway and beach clean ups. What are your plans after high school? My plans after high school is to attend Florida National University in Miami to study Criminology and Business and play volleyball at a college level. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I would make the Keys my permanent home. I think it is a great place to raise kids and to grow up.

SHIPS IN THE NIGHT Cuba is opening and the time to visit is now

O Born in Florida and raised in Ohio, Jason Koler is the “better looking and way smarter” Keys Weekly publisher. When not chasing his children or rubbing his wife’s feet, he enjoys folding laundry and performing experimental live publishing.

JASON KOLER/Keys Weekly

JASON KOLER

n Tuesday morning, the Monroe County Sheriff reported nine Cuban migrants arriving to the U.S. at MM 96.4. “All in good condition,” read the statement. Some 90 miles away, the first U.S. cruise ship to visit the island nation in more than 50 years was making its way from Havana to Cienfuegos to Santiago de Cuba. Politics aside, the imagery of 700, dumpling-shaped cruise ship passengers disembarking in Havana with their cameras and fanny packs fills me with dread. I am not expressing a political opinion when I say this country is about to be corrupted. Corrupted by the impatience of spoiled U.S. travelers. We all know the big corporations are drooling over the Malecon like a pack of wild dogs salivating over a raw steak, but the biggest threat to this country is the rudeness and arrogance of entitled American tourists. They will undoubtedly find the El Floridita — the cradle of the daiquiri where the bartenders take their time serving the potent limey cocktail in a martini glass. “This is too strong,” I can hear them now. “Aren’t they supposed to be strawberry?” “I want a Bud Light.” Then I see them hit Sloppy Joe’s — only to be disappointed with they discover the only merchandise available here is rum. No “cool” Hemingway-themed T-shirts with Havana printed proudly on the front. Hopefully the bartenders will suggest, “Try the Santiago, 11 años … it’s the real Mejia.” The aged rum is served best straight out of the bottle with no accouterments like Coke, lime or ice. This rum should be enjoyed properly – with the peacocks in the lobby of the Hotel Conde de Villanueva. There, in the open air courtyard you can slice a millimeter from the cigar handrolled just a floor above and enjoy the coolness of the fauna and tiled floors. My advice is this: call Larry Benvenuti and get to Cuba now. I saw prices spike in the span of 10 months in 2015 and although the chicken McNuggets, Starbucks and Holiday Inns may not appear for a few years — the singularity that comes with a country sequestered for more than 60 years is coming to an end.

SUMMER STOCK SOLAR DIVE WATCH Now that summer weather has arrived, it’s time to consider some new products that make life worth living in the Keys. For example, the Tusa DC Solar is a computer that fits on a diver’s wrist. Users can program it with a smartphone using a Bluetooth connection. The dive computer is completely solar-powered, rechargeable with sunlight or indoor fluorescent lighting. It also comes with four preset individual gas mixes and audible alarms for ascent rate, max depth and more. $750 @ Divers Direct

BEDFAN The a/c struggling with the return of hot nights in the Keys? Try a bedfan — vastly different from a bed pan. The fan comes in two heights to reach under the covers and blow a soft stream of fresh air under the sheets making them “hover.” It’s built in America and uses 80 percent American-made parts. This version of The Bedfan claims to be the original and is much more economical than its Brookstone’s counterpart. $85 @ amazon.com

BEERGOGGLES For years, wine drinkers have been showing off with their adorable little charms on the wine glass stem to proclaim ownership. Now beer drinkers can do the same with a set of “beer goggles” by Gama Go. Don’t worry about losing your beer again, even when your Cousin Larry, the beer hog, is visiting. The bottle garnishes are sold by the half dozen and are made of plastic. (They might snap, though, so order extra, which is doable at this price point — $10.) Order them on amazon.com or stop by Target to pick them up. $10 or less

he Florida Keys Community Concert Band held its Young Musicians Concert April 30th before a captivated audience at Founder’s Park Amphitheater. The concert was the final show for the Pops in the Park 2015-2016 concert series, and students and mentors from the Keys and the Miami Arts Charter School played side by side. “Our young musicians have worked so hard, and it’s been incredible seeing how much they have improved throughout our concert series,” said Hulber Gagliardini, guest conductor and director of bands at the Miami Arts Charter School. The concert featured musical pieces such as “Dragons in the Mist,” “The Curse of Tutankhamun,” “To the Pied Piper,” and “Let There be Peace on Earth.” Along with showcasing local talent, the Florida Keys Community Concert Band also provides gift certificates and music supplies to young musicians and provides support for college-bound talent by awarding grants. “It’s been so much fun bringing together young people from all over the Keys communities and watching them learn and grow as musicians. I’ve been involved with the Community Band for over 20 years and I absolutely love working with these kids,” said Susan Bazin, concert master and band director of Key Largo Middle School. The series was made possible by contributions from the Hulburt Family Foundation, Monroe County Tourist Development Council, Einstein Fund, and the Coldwell Banker Schmitt Foundation. — Weekly Staff report

GUNS IN THE KEYS A look at purchasing and shooting a weapon in the Florida Keys Hays Blinckmann

G

un ownership has been on the rise in the past decade in the Florida Keys. While there might be many reasons to own a gun, two recurring ones are the need for self-protection and a fear the federal government will ban the sale of all guns. Keys residents are buying guns, and in many cases multiples, and obtaining concealed weapons permits faster than any other county in Florida. According to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, violent crime has decreased since 1995. However, because of how crimes are categorized it’s difficult to know how many incidents involved the use of guns. For example, a crime may be deemed violent but the weapon could have been a beer bottle or a gun. Or a burglary may be categorized as an armed burglary because a gun was present, but not necessarily brandished. The Monroe County’s Sheriff’s office has documented one, maybe two, home invasions a year since 2008 according to MCSO’s Becky Herrin. Key West Police spokesperson Alyson Crean said, “There were 36 burglaries of occupied residences in 2015. However, we categorize an occupied burglary as any type of theft when people are home. That means even a bike stolen off the porch would be included in this category.” In September of 2015, a Big Pine Key man shot to death another man who was trying to force his way into the house in what was allegedly a domestic dispute. He was not charged with a crime as it was deemed a “stand your ground” scenario by the State Attorney.

Mark Senmartin owns Cash Flow Jewelry and Pawn in Marathon. (He is also the city’s elected mayor). He has been licensed to sell guns for seven years. “In order to even find out the dealer’s cost, I had to be licensed. So when I got into this, I didn’t even know if it was going to be profitable,” he said. Diligence is key when it comes to weapons sales and Senmartin is always on the look out for those attempting to make an illegal “straw purchase,” for another person who is not qualified to own a gun. (See more about authorized sellers in the sidebar.)

PART 2 OF 3 IN A SERIES

THE LAW • Who can’t own a gun? Convicted felons, those convicted of a misdemeanor or domestic violence, and those who have been deemed mentally defective in a court or committed to mental institution. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the agency performing the background checks, may also deny the sale to a person arrested for one of 22 “dangerous” crimes ranging from extortion to controlled substance violations. • When purchasing a gun, a buyer has two options. First, to seek a registered and licensed Federal Firearm Licensed gun dealer who is “engaged in the business” of selling guns. Also, used firearms may also be bought and sold privately by an unlicensed seller. An unlicensed seller is categorized as someone who does not make the majority of their livelihood from gun sales and is not required to impose a waiting period or background check. President Barack Obama recently issued new executive actions that further restrict unlicensed sellers to less than two sales in certain circumstances in order to qualify. • Gun purchasers, including those with a “carry” license, must pass a background check every time they purchase from a FFL licensee. That is true for purchasers of handguns or long guns. Persons 18 and older may purchase a long gun, defined as a shotgun or rifle, without a waiting period. Only persons 21 and older may purchase handguns and the purchase includes a 72-hour waiting period. • Florida has no laws regulating the sale of “assault weapons” other than those listed above.

19

Who is buying the guns? “Just your average regular citizen, really,” Senmartin said. “I have the group that wants something for protection, or the group that are collectors and are looking for something very specific. And then more recently, the group who is worried that their right to own a gun will be taken away and wants to purchase a gun before that happens; they don’t make up a huge percentage, but its more than it used to be.” Senmartin said he works to “match” the gun to the owner. “Ultimately, I will sell them what they want. But if you have an older woman that doesn’t have a lot of hand strength, and can’t work a slide, I steer her towards a revolver. I want them to have the best option. That’s just customer service.” In addition to selling guns, Senmartin also offers firearm education. He is a licensed NRA instructor able to provide certification classes for concealed weapon ownership. Senmartin’s classes are a three-hour classroom seminar about gun safety, handling and cleaning, and more importantly, gun laws. Senmartin teaches from the book; “Florida Firearms Law, Use and Ownership.” Then he takes the class to the shooting range to continue safety and responsibility when handling and shooting a gun. In 2014, a Big Pine backyard range garnered national attention. When Doug Varrieur used his yard on a busy canal as a gun range, he was completely within his rights. However, public outcry prompted a change to the law. Gov. Rick Scott signed bill SB 130 last July, which prohibits the recreational discharge of a firearm in certain residential areas, specifically in areas “that the person knows or reasonably should know is primarily residential in nature and that has a residential density of one or more dwelling units per acre.” This does not mean backyard ranges do not exist in the Keys, but they must be in more rural areas. Many Keys residents make use of two indoor shooting ranges — one in the Lower Keys and one in the Upper Keys. Phillip Condella, owner of the Big Coppitt Gun Club, said he sees a mixture of clientele, about 25 percent women and up to 10 percent overseas visitors. The club offers free safety and instruction when entering the range and private lessons are always available. Staff checks the ammunition because steel cores are not allowed. Condella sums up the essence of safe and lawful gun possession: “Anyone who owns a gun should know how to use it. Safety is a priority.”
