RAW BAR

By Hays Blinckmann We are on summer’s doorstep and peering into the abyss of endless, sunny, 88-with-a-chance-of-shower days. Fluffy cumulous clouds will float and transform through the cobalt blue mesmerizing and enchanting. Sunsets will look like Italian Renaissance paintings with streaks of orange, red and magenta lighting up the sky like Mother Nature on LSD. For those of us who have nowhere else to go, we turn to the one place that will deliver us from evil, the ocean. But we wanted to ask how to get there

COUNTY AUTHORIZES $12.5 MILLION FOR PRIVATE DEVELOPER

W By Britt Myers

ednesday’s County Commission meeting was no exception when it came to last-minute changes, questions and approvals for the much-discussed Peary Court deal. After more than a year of debates, presentations and a Key West referendum, the fate of Peary Court rested with BOCC’s decision to award a private investor, the Cornfeld Group, with $12.5 million of Land Authority funds as an incentive to deed restrict the property for affordable workforce housing. And while several members of the public spoke out against the measure, the BOCC was seemingly harmonious in support of the item. Commissioner Danny Kolhage, echoing much of the Commission's sentiments, contended the decision to allocate the earmarked Land Authority funds was a decision endorsed by the City of Key West. “What we're not considering is the effect [of not approving the deal] if all of that converts to real market rate,” said Kolhage of Peary Court. "Where would the City be then? This money is allocated to the City of Key West. The City Commission is charged with allocating these requests, going through all of the analysis, holding a public hearing and acting.

And they have acted. It’s not for us. I do not see this as our responsibility to second guess, go behind, reevaluate this request on part of the City Commission. So I’m not going to do that.” However, as Commissioner George Neugent made a motion to approve, Charles Pattison, executive director for Land Authority, threw a curve ball. Pattison, along with Land Authority attorney Ginny Stones, explained that investors created a new LLC — for financing purposes — changing the name on the contract approved by the City of Key West. The last minute change ignited a flurry of questions and confusion among many in the room and the BOCC, which challenged whether the alteration negated the City’s initial approval of the deal. The Cornfeld Group’s attorney, Erica Sterling, assured the board such changes are not uncommon in real estate deals. In addition, Sterling guaranteed the BOCC that the title was the only alteration being made in the proposal and the Cornfeld Group would remain the sole owners of the property. From there, the board took a 15-minute recess, where the County Attorney, City Attorney, Stones and Hughes all convened in legal discussions surrounding the matter. In the end, the BOCC agreed to approve the item as presented with a unanimous vote, citing the terms of the contract were assignable. Stones said she presented the revelation as a gesture of transparency for the BOCC. "My purpose for raising it yesterday was for purposes of the board being aware there was a name change,” said Stones. “So they didn’t feel like they had approved one thing and it went for another.” Stones said it’s unlikely the item will go back to Key West City Commissioners. Rather, City Attorney Shawn Smith will be charged with amending the contract to reflect the new corporate entity. Also included in the contract approved by the BOCC was a stipulation that the market rate allocations will not be “moved off” the Peary Court property and sold on the private market for new developments. Key West Commissioner Sam Kaufman requested that change in a May 16 letter to Mark Rosch who serves as the Land Authoritys’ Sr. Property Acquisition Specialist.

Former State Rep seeking his first county office By Britt Myers

T

here were rumors, but many doubted the validity. Yet at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, former Monroe County State Representative Ron Saunders officially threw his hat in the ring for the position of Monroe County Clerk of Court. The move will most certainly make the Clerk of Court election one of Monroe County’s most enticing conversation pieces throughout election season. Not only is Saunders returning to politics, he is doing so in a potential matchup between the current incumbent, Amy Heavilin. Saunders is employed by the Clerk’s office as general counsel, but shortly after filing, offered his letter of resignation. Policy dictates that Saunders must serve out 20 working days, or four weeks, before stepping down—meaning his last day will be June 17. For me, I’m not going into this as if I’m running against someone,” said Saunders. “Instead, I’m running for the position. I think I can add some leadership and knowledge to the position and I’m excited about the opportunity to serve.” Heavilin, a Republican, is already facing heavy opposition from Kevin Madok, who currently serves as senior director of planning for Monroe County. Heavilin and Madok are set for a showdown in August’s Republican primary. The winner will face Democrat Ron Saunders. Saunders served as Monroe County’s State Representative in Tallahassee from 1986-1994 and again from 2006-2012. Prior to the 2012 election, Madok served as assistant finance director in the Clerk’s office from 2004-2012. Heavilin is completing her first term in office having previously worked as Finance Director for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

or the first time in over a month, the Key West City Commission wrapped up a meeting at Old City Hall before 11 p.m. In fact, most of the notable items were either postponed or pulled from the agenda, including a proposal by Commissioner Sam Kaufman to abandon voting districts in Key West, which would subject all city commission elections to an at-large vote. Kaufman pulled that item at the beginning of the meeting, which did not sit well with many in the room who were attending in opposition to the measure. “If we are going to pull things from the agenda, I would ask that we at least do so by Friday night or noon on Monday,” said Commissioner Margaret Romero. “This way people don’t take time from their schedules and families.” Kaufman later apologized for the short notice, but stated that more conversation and consideration was needed before the commission voted on the issues of voting districts — something he intends to cover at a District II workshop on Friday, June 1 at 6 p.m. at Poinciana Elementary. However, without many prickly items to review, the evening belonged to retiring Key West Fire Chief David Fraga, who is stepping down at the end of this month. Fraga, who has dedicated 42 years of service to the Key West Fire Department, 10 of those as Chief, was commended by the City with a proclamation. “Chief Fraga has been an extraordinary example of loyalty, dedication, honesty and integrity to the men and women that serve under his command,” said Deputy City Clerk Angela Budde on behalf of the City. “In his 10 years serving as Chief, he has lead by example, only asking of his firefighters those things which he himself has or would have done.” Fraga, who was honored with two standing ovations, fought emotions as he thanked many in the room, including his five sons and wife Linda who he claimed, “held the ladder while I was allowed to climb it.” Fraga also praised his colleagues. “I would put them up against any other fire department anytime anywhere,” said Fraga of the KWFD. “They’re that good. And I’m proud of it.”

Along with the 125 six-person relay teams running, about 350 individuals will be taking on the 100- and 50-mile feats and a 50-kilometer run. Most teams will finish in the evening hours of Saturday into early Sunday morning. “From the first day, we have been very sensitive about being good guests in Monroe County, which of course includes the requirement not to disrupt traffic along Overseas Highway,” said race founder Bob Becker. Saturday, May 28 marks the return of the MaraTri, the local triathlon benefiting youth athletics and athletes with disabilities via the Special Olympics. This year will be the first year the race is listed as an official USA Triathlon event. There has also been a change to the course to improve safety conditions for the participants. “In previous years traffic guards were utilized for intersecting bike and run paths; the change separates the paths,” said Mark Felts, co-founder of the event. There are two race distances: “Mini” and “Sprint.” The Mini is half of a standard Sprint distance. Organizers are offering a free training session for participants on Friday, May 27, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Sombrero Beach and packet pick up is immediately after. — Gabriel Sanchez

TONY BALTIMORE

to play ‘The Ramble’

By James Whitehead

“N

ick Doll tricked me.” That is how Tony Baltimore found his way to Key West. Initially bound for either Paris or Manhattan, Tony was convinced to visit the island and the rest is history. Originally from, well Baltimore, Maryland, of course, Tony began his musical journey as a drummer in the fourth grade. He continued on the drums into high school, playing in the school’s jazz ensemble for a period of time. Eventually, Baltimore began messing with the guitar

and soon started signing and playing piano. Tony would continue to play as he entered the University of Baltimore where he earned his undergraduate degree in English literature and American history. He would further his education by later earning a Masters of Fine Arts in creative writing and publication with a focus on poetry. Once Tony established Key West as his new residence in 2010, he quickly began securing gigs all around town and today he is by far one of the busiest and hardest working musicians in town. Playing regularly in an array of different locations including The Lazy Gecko, Dante’s, Sunset Tiki, Sunset Pier and the Conch Republic Seafood Company, Baltimore continues to be one of top, sought-after local musicians. He also recently recorded his latest album, “Define the Blur” at the brand-new Ramble Room Studios, Baltimore is already working on new material and is looking to head back into the studio to record both an EP, with Tony Roberts, and another solo album this year. Baltimore will re-join the original Sunday Ramble crew to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the series at the Key West Theater. “The Ramble provides the opportunity for local songwriters to perform original music alongside their friends to an audience who are looking to take part in a show outside the smoky-bar-adorned-with-televisions environment,” he said. See more about the Ramble on page 18.

For better or worse, I'm interested in just about everything: every different type of music I can imagine. I can never see a reason to choose just one type of music at the exclusion of everything else. Different types of music are capable of being rewarding in different kinds of ways. — Moby

f course the most popular drink at Turtle Kraals is the Tipsy Turtle, the drink that leads the specialty cocktail menu at the bar. Made with Cruzan rum with mango and pineapple, coconut and passion fruit rums, and lemon juice, bartender Chris Norton says it goes best with the wide variety of ceviche on the menu. “The Nikkei is my favorite, it’s a grouper ceviche with a little kick to it,” he said. Other ceviche varieties include the Peruvian Classico, Mojito, The Cure, and, of course, Conch. Norton moved down from Cape Cod two and a half years ago when a friend who worked in Key West seasonally convinced him to come and try it out. Norton has been a permanent resident ever since. When he isn’t bartending, he’s paddleboarding out of Lazy Dog on Stock Island. Turtle Kraals is located at 231 Margaret St. in Key West and is also a great spot to catch a Key West sunset.

hat do you get when you mix Greek heritage (Michael) and an Irish Catholic from Philadelphia (Denise) who both have been in the service industry for decades? Food, and lots of it, day or night. Owned and run by dynamic duo Michael and Denise Chelekis, the funky decor and down-home food at Camille’s have as much personality as the owners. It’s not by chance that you will see a Key West Commissioner laughing at one table with friends and a jovial rehearsal dinner for a local receptionist at the same time on a Friday night. Locals are there to enjoy the ever-

changing “American Modern” menu served by Denise herself. Bustling about, her energy and charisma fill the room as she serves up “Effentini’s” — the perfect post-work, Friday martini made with cucumber. Or opt for a Key Lime Martini and enjoy dessert first — it’s Key West, anything goes. There is a full bar with lots of choices. Denise’s juggles an armful of Key Lime pie for the wedding party while she ponders the essence of hospitality. “I would do the same in my home, but it’s a restaurant,” she said. “I’ve always done it this way.” Denise is an open book with lively stories — a couple of celebrity names surfaced — and a commanding presence in the dining room which makes everyone feel welcome. Travel and food channels often stop by, but Denise waves it off as the norm. She just worries if there is enough of her homemade Artichoke Dip with jalapeños,

ot many DJ’s can say they played the Viper Room in LA or have their own home-booth lined with hundreds of vinyl records, but for George Aderhold being a DJ isn’t what he is, it’s who he is. DJ George mixes, spins, cuts, fades and works the sound of the room like an orchestra conductor providing musical elixir. He soothes what ails, puts roots back into our soul, and wants everyone to just boogie down. DJing since 1995, George, 42, fell in love early with music. From his parents playing jazz at home to learning to beat match in the early ’90s, George has gone from coast to coast with his passion. Originally, born in Palm Beach, he and his girlfriend, Jennifer returned from California to Key West and now help run her family’s business, Captain’s Corner (dive trips). The one-year hiatus from the real world turned into a decade, and Key West is all the better for it. From his musical knowledge to considerable and impressive collection of music, it seemed Madonna was talking directly to him when she said: “Hey Mr. DJ, put a record on because I want to dance with my baby. Find DJ George at Point 5’s “Destination Boogie” every other Saturday night; and every other Friday at The Porch for "Courtyard Boogie “ or at the Electric Pickle in the Wynwood area of Miami. DJ George doesn’t do weddings. “I learned a lot from playing weddings but I don’t want the responsibility of the ‘happiest day’ of someone’s life,” he said. But you do make happy, George, you really do.

I will change (fill in blank) when (fill in blank)? I will change my clothes when necessary Finish these sentences … Living in Key West … has been an inspiration.

Hey Mister DJ, put a record on. I wanna dance with my baby.

My autobiography would be titled … “Long Train Running” (a nod to Doobie Brothers). Helping others … is essential When I go, I will go … listening to BB King’s “The Thrill is Gone.” Who would you have your last meal with? With the ones that I love.

Don’t miss the last movie of the season. The Bayview Park Outdoor Movie Series ends Friday with a free showing of “The Lego Movie” at dusk at Bayview Park, Key West. The public is encouraged to bring low-profile chairs, blankets and pull up a piece of lawn for a great night of CGI magic featuring the voices of Chris Pratt and Will Ferrell.

The Key West Firehouse Museum is gearing up for the annual birthday celebration of the 102-year-old mamey tree on the premises. The event features mamey (a creamy fruit; sapote to Latinos) ice cream, light appetizers and beverages. Built in 1907, Fire Station No. 3, located at the corner of Grinnell and Virginia Streets, is one of the oldest fire stations in the state of Florida.

It happens at the Waterfront Playhouse and doors open at 7:30 p.m.

h Boom Sh Boom — go ahead, say it out loud, deep and throaty, fun and funky. Sh Boom. Now imagine a band that embodies that soul-filling, shoulder-humping, trumpet-blowing vibe, and call it the Sh Booms. Playing one night at the Southernmost Beach Resort on Friday, June 3 from 7 to 9 p.m., the Sh Booms will hit the sand for a free concert and fill the night air with a garage- band-like-funk not to be missed. “As far as the concert being free – we love our locals and guests alike, and want to give them a good night out on the beach,” said Megan Coccitto of Southernmost Beach Resort, who invited the band at the urging of Executive Chef Matt Slattery. Although the music’s Motown roots are familiar, the band has transformed their originals into a more soul-singing, brass-blowing, modern-gritty-rock sound. With the addition of lead singer and powerhouse front lady Mizz Bren (Brenda Radney), the band found its voice, a loud and loose growl reminiscent of Aretha Franklin. The Sh Booms move their audience into a dancing groove, sometimes playing covers, but mostly modern soul. “Our bio makes us sound squeaky clean,” said front man Al “The Thump” Ruiz referring to the start of the band when it was just a Motown inspired act started in 2011. Now, Ruiz says, “We are a seven-piece, garage soul outfit taking the Southeast over stage by stage.” This is the Sh Booms’s first time in Key West from hometown Orlando, and they couldn’t be more excited to blow our Southernmost minds. “Our songs are inspired by the grind of life — relationships, sub“Anyone who can get stance issues, and letting loose. We hope people connect and go crazy down with us is our audience. It’s gonna be with us at shows.” said Ruiz. Camps let kids be kids By Kristen Livengood

T

COAST PROJECTS/Contributed

ucked in quietly at the back of Stock Island, the COAST property looks like an explorer’s playground, or the perfect place for kids to play during the summer — wooden and rustic — and ready for building, discovering, and getting a little dirty. “Basic human instinct draws to our childish wants and desires to be outside in nature, to sweat, and run, and fall down and get back up,” said COAST founder and creative director Billy Kearins and dad to a 3-anda-half-year-old and 8-year-old. “These kids don’t even think about cell phones, iPads and video games when they are here.” COAST offers two summer programs, the weeklong “Original” camp and the weeklong “Along the Coast” camp, starting June 13 and running through August 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the original camp, the lineup is jewelry making, beach exploring and environmental ecology, screen printing, survival skills, skateboard making, and more. The week runs $325 for 6 to 12 year olds. (The first week, June 13-17, will be open for 4 to 8 year olds.) One of the days, the kids imagine “Camp should be they are stranded on a deserted island, a place where they learning life survival skills like boating can run around, play, safety, knots, shelter making, and edible fruits and trees. Another day, the touch things, and not campers create their very own skatebe afraid to break board from concept to completion, something.” bringing it home with them after the –Billy Kearins, COAST Founder camp is over. Last year, Kearins added the Along the Coast camp, where campers make a five-day trek around Old Town. The team starts Day 2 in the exact spot Day 1 ended. “We make a loop around the island, visiting new locations each day,” said Kearins. They visit places like the Southernmost Point, Bahama Village, Ft. Zach, Truman Waterfront, Key West Bight, the cemetery, and The Meadows. “A lot of things are experimental. I get an idea and I act on it,” Kearins said. The Along the Coast camp follows the same philosophy. “If the kids are having fun exploring a spot or climbing on a tree, we can stay there,” said Kearins. “It’s rugged, like playing in the dirt, finding shells,” said Caroline, mother to 7-year-old Samara who participated last year. “The creativity just pours out of the kids.” For more information on the camps, visit coastprojects.com or call 617-418-9085.
