LOCAL CHATTER
MARATHON WEEKLY / MAY 20, 2016 By Gabriel Sanchez As the summer months creep along, the temperature is not the only thing heating up. The primary elections are in full swing and the race to the White House is white hot. The tectonic plates of the political landscape are shifting until the environment is barely recognizable. It’s become so bizarre that average citizens are questioning whether they, themselves, would make a better president. (Hey, technically it’s still possible.) So we asked …
What would be your personal political party platform? Arno Silva, of the UPS Store, wants to establish the local Gumbo Limbo Party. “Our party would work to peel off the layers of stress government can put on its citizens,” Silva said. “First and foremost, our party would focus on local flora and fauna. We need to educate locals and tourist alike on how precious and unique our environment is.”
Elson Stuart, of Papa John’s Pizza, would like to see his party, the Working Man’s Party, restructure the labor force in the country. “We need to develop the workforce to have tangible skill sets, we need more people participating,” he said. “I’d also like to see the Working Man’s Party attain affordable housing for the working class in the Florida Keys. We need to support our workers with grass roots initiatives.”
Jose Sanchez, who handles the Weekly circulation, would like to see his Freedom and Liberties Party tackle civil liberties and fiscal problems. “Citizens need less regulations and taxes in their lives. The government has expanded too much of its control into people’s lives,” he said. Along with regulations and taxes, Jose would like to see the retirement age lowered for working seniors.
Meka Williams, of Dion’s Chicken, outlined a simple mission for the One For All Party - equality. “We need to move away from issues that divide us and pit one group against the other,” Williams said. “Lately we see a lot of conversation around race, and I think we all need to look past those things and learn to work together to solve problems.” Meka is also an advocate for adding an extra day to the weekend.
Naomi Valerdi, of Keys Fitness, wants to make a push for youth activities in Marathon. Her More Room for Activities Party has the goal of developing programs geared to directing positive and healthy recreation for youth. “Aside from our youth programs, the Activities Party wants shorter working hours and slightly higher wages in the Florida Keys,” she added.

On behalf of Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys Board Directors, volunteers and most importantly our future homeowners, I extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful Island of Marathon whose support made our 10th Annual Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament a huge success. Thank you to our main sponsors Marathon Boat Yard Marine Center with Yamaha. In addition, thank you to the following for your sponsorship of this event: Centennial Bank, Iberiabank, BB&T Bank, Fed Ex operated by ERGI, Inc., Tilden’s Scuba Center, Keys Contracting Services, Florida Keys Contractor’s Assoc., Faro Blanco/Hyatt Resort, Curly’s Coffee and Docks, Hawk’s Cay Resort, Royal Furniture, FKEC, D’Asign Source, Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters, MLKAR, KCB Community Assoc., Big Time Bait & Tackle, Fishmonster Magazine, Marathon Chamber of Commerce, UPS Store, Jeff Coldren, Island Custom Graphics & Sign, Key Colony Inn Restaurant, City of Marathon, Bishop Properties and Christopher B. RENEGADE RUN/WALK 5K
Saturday, May 28 @ 7:30 p.m., White Street Pier, Key West Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at White Street Pier, the Southernmost Seminole Club will host the seventh annual Renegade Run. Florida State University alumnus — and anyone up for a good 5k night run — will gather at sunset to raise scholarship money for Key West High seniors headed off to FSU. Organizer Megan Oropeza Wise (FSU 2008), was a scholarship recipient upon graduating KWHS in 2004. “The scholarships have helped a lot of kids become Seminoles, including myself.” Wise said. MARATRI 10
Saturday, May 21 @ 5:45 a.m., Key Largo to Key West
Saturday, May 28 @ 7 a.m., Sombrero Beach, Marathon
Starting in Key Largo in the wee hours of Saturday morning, relay teams and individual racers will start the 100-mile trek from Key Largo to Key West. Along with the 125 six-person relay teams running, about 350 individuals will be taking on the 100- and 50-mile feats and a 50-kilometer run. Most teams will finish in the evening hours of Saturday into early Sunday morning. “From the first day, we have been very sensitive about being good guests in Monroe County, which of course includes the requirement not to disrupt traffic along Overseas Highway,” said race founder Bob Becker. Racers will start in waves from MM 100 to help with traffic flow. Proceeds from the race support the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. — Kristen Livengood
Saturday, May 28 marks the return of the MaraTri, the local triathlon benefiting youth athletics and athletes with disabilities via the Special Olympics. This year will be the first year the race is listed as an official USA Triathlon event. There has also been a change to the course to improve safety conditions for the participants. “In previous years traffic guards were utilized for intersecting bike and run paths; the change separates the paths,” said Mark Felts, co-founder of the event. There are two race distances: “Mini” and “Sprint.” The Mini is half of a standard Sprint distance. Organizers are offering a free training session for participants on Friday, May 27, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Sombrero Beach and packet pick up is immediately after. — Gabriel Sanchez

MONROE COUNTY
COMMERCE CORNER FloridaKeysMusicStage.com Florida Keys Music Stage is a website established in 2014 that will guide costumers to the entertainment of their choice throughout the Keys. The site offers one convenient spot to find local entertainment, concerts, venues, and artists. “This website will unite everybody in one place, one stage, and the visitor can see them all,” said Music Stage owner Peter C. Kouris. “When a person comes to our site, he or she can select where they want to go and party and who will be playing, all in one spot.” The website corrals all of the Keys entertainers in on one convenient location, which makes it easier to find the entertainers someone might be searching for. “You see, all the music venues have websites, as well as the musicians, but that’s a lot work to search them all,” said Kouris. “This site will offer one place to see where everyone is at.” The site is free to music venues and musicians exclusively in Monroe County and is free for registered participants. The site is paid for by advertisers and more information can be found on the site or by calling Kouris. Former State Rep seeking his first county office By Britt Myers
T
here were rumors, but many doubted the validity. Yet at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, former Monroe County State Representative Ron Saunders officially threw his hat in the ring for the position of Monroe County Clerk of Court. The move will most certainly make the Clerk of Court election one of Monroe County’s most enticing conversation pieces throughout election season. Not only is Saunders returning to politics, he is doing so in a potential matchup between the current incumbent, Amy Heavilin. Saunders is employed by the Clerk’s office as general counsel, but shortly after filing, offered his letter of resignation. Policy dictates that Saunders must serve out 20 working days, or four weeks, before stepping down—meaning his last day will be June 17. For me, I’m not going into this as if I’m running against someone,” said Saunders. “Instead, I’m running for the position. I think I can add some leadership and knowledge to the position and I’m excited about the opportunity to serve.” Heavilin, a Republican, is already facing heavy opposition from Kevin Madok, who currently serves as senior director of planning for Monroe County. Heavilin and Madok are set for a showdown in August’s Republican primary. The winner will face Democrat Ron Saunders. Saunders served as Monroe County’s State Representative in Tallahassee from 1986-1994 and again from 2006-2012. Prior to the 2012 election, Madok served as assistant finance director in the Clerk’s office from 2004-2012. Heavilin is completing her first term in office having previously worked as Finance Director for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

ednesday’s County Commission meeting was no exception when it came to last-minute changes, questions and approvals for the much-discussed Peary Court deal. After more than a year of debates, presentations and a Key West referendum, the fate of Peary Court rested with BOCC’s decision to award a private investor, the Cornfeld Group, with $12.5 million of Land Authority funds as an incentive to deed restrict the property for affordable workforce housing. And while several members of the public spoke out against the measure, the BOCC was seemingly harmonious in support of the item. Commissioner Danny Kolhage, echoing much of the Commission's sentiments, contended the decision to allocate the earmarked Land Authority funds was a decision endorsed by the City of Key West. “What we're not considering is the effect [of not approving the deal] if all of that converts to real market rate,” said Kolhage of Peary Court. "Where would the City be then? This money is allocated to the City of Key West. The City Commission is charged with allocating these requests, going through all of the analysis, holding a public hearing and acting. And they have acted. It’s not for us. I do not see this as our responsibility to second guess, go behind, reevaluate this request on part of the City Commission. So I’m not going to do that.” However, as Commissioner George Neugent made a motion to approve, Charles Pattison, executive director for Land Authority, threw a curve ball. Pattison, along with Land Authority attorney Ginny Stones, explained that investors created a new LLC — for financing purposes — changing the name on the contract approved by the City of Key West. The last minute change ignited a flurry of questions and confusion among many in the room and the BOCC, which challenged whether the alteration negated the City’s initial approval of the deal. The Cornfeld Group’s attorney, Erica Sterling, assured the board such changes are not uncommon in real estate deals. In addition, Sterling guaranteed the BOCC that the title was the only alteration being made in the proposal and the Cornfeld Group would remain the sole owners of the property. From there, the board took a 15-minute recess, where the County Attorney, City Attorney, Stones and Hughes all convened in legal discussions surrounding the matter. In the end, the BOCC agreed to approve the item as presented with a unanimous vote, citing the terms of the contract were assignable. Stones said she presented the revelation as a gesture of transparency for the BOCC. "My purpose for raising it yesterday was for purposes of the board being aware there was a name change,” said Stones. “So they didn’t feel like they had approved one thing and it went for another.” Stones said it’s unlikely the item will go back to Key West City Commissioners. Rather, City Attorney Shawn Smith will be charged with amending the contract to reflect the new corporate entity. Also included in the contract approved by the BOCC was a stipulation that the market rate allocations will not be “moved off” the Peary Court property and sold on the private market for new developments. Key West Commissioner Sam Kaufman requested that change in a May 16 letter to Mark Rosch who serves as the Land Authoritys’ Sr. Property Acquisition Specialist.

Russo lands walk-on role in new novel
Getting into the spirit — Lori Russo, an executive assistant at Fisherman’s Hospital in Marathon — is poised to walk into the pages of New York Times bestselling author Lisa Black’s next novel.
Marathon resident to be named in next Lisa Black mystery Contributed
L
ori Russo, of Marathon, Florida, has won a walk-on cameo appearance in New York Times bestselling author Lisa Black’s next novel. The “character placement” contest was an early registration promotion for the Mystery Writers Key West Fest, set to take place June 10-12 in Key West. The namesake character’s internal persona will be determined by the author, but Russo has some thoughts. “I’m most comfortable being a positive role model, so I’m hoping it’s a heroic character with my name, not a villain,” said Russo. “My husband John F. Russo is author of two action-adventure novels and has said I’m the inspiration for his heroine, Angela Fournier. It’s very exciting living the life of a heroine among villains!” Author Black is slated to be a panelist and workshop presenter at the upcoming Fest. Her titles include “Close to the Bone,” “The Price of Innocence,” “Blunt Impact,” “Defensive Wounds,” “Trail of Blood,” “Evidence of Murder,” “Takeover” and “That Darkness.” Registration includes all panels, presentations, four meals and is $175. Camps let kids be kids
By Kristen Livengood
T
ucked in quietly at the back of Stock Island, the COAST property looks like an explorer’s playground, or the perfect place for kids to play during the summer — wooden and rustic — and ready for building, discovering, and getting a little dirty. “Basic human instinct draws to our childish wants and desires to be outside in nature, to sweat, and run, and fall down and get back up,” said COAST founder and creative director Billy Kearins and dad to a 3-and-a-half-year-old and 8-year-old. “These kids don’t even think about cell phones, iPads and video games when they are here.” COAST offers two summer programs, the weeklong “Original” camp and the weeklong “Along the Coast” camp, starting June 13 and running through August 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the original camp, the lineup is jewelry making, beach exploring and environmental ecology, screen printing, survival skills, skateboard making, and more. The week runs $325 for 6 to 12 year olds. (The first week, June 13-17, will “Camp should be be open for 4 to 8 year olds.) One of the days, the kids imagine they are a place where they stranded on a deserted island, learning life survival can run around, play, skills like boating safety, knots, shelter making, and touch things, and not edible fruits and trees. Another day, the campers be afraid to break create their very own skateboard from concept to something.” completion, bringing it home with them after the camp is over. –Billy Kearins, COAST Founder. Last year, Kearins added the Along the Coast camp, where campers make a five-day trek around Old Town. The team starts Day 2 in the exact spot Day 1 ended. “We make a loop around the island, visiting new locations each day,” said Kearins. They visit places like the Southernmost Point, Bahama Village, Ft. Zach, Truman Waterfront, Key West Bight, the cemetery, and The Meadows. “A lot of things are experimental. I get an idea and I act on it,” Kearins said. The Along the Coast camp follows the same philosophy. “If the kids are having fun exploring a spot or climbing on a tree, we can stay there,” said Kearins. “It’s rugged, like playing in the dirt, finding shells,” said Caroline, mother to 7-year-old Samara who participated last year. “The creativity just pours out of the kids.” For more information on the camps, visit coastprojects.com or call 617-418-9085.

ust in time for Memorial Day Weekend, Monroe County will officially open Rowell’s Waterfront Park in Key Largo to the public. The kid- and dog-friendly park along Florida Bay will open Friday, May 27, featuring picnic tables, benches, a place to swim (at you own risk) and a launch for kayaks, canoes and standup paddleboards. The park, located at MM 104.5, will be open seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to sunset. And, admission is free. “This is exactly what we promised on the day we purchased Rowell’s property,” said Monroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy, who represents the Upper Keys. “We said we were buying it because the price was right and that we would develop it at a future time. And we are now in the process of beginning that development.” The eight-acre site was purchased in December 2013 for $5 million and has been used as an event site. The County has been putting together a five-year plan to develop the property into a park. artender Luke Spaker moved to the Keys in 2006 after coming here from Las Vegas on vacation. "I was having lunch at Little Palm and was offered a job, and moved down the next week," he said. He's been at Florida Keys Steak & Lobster House for the past two years. Spaker says the coconut margarita, made with 1800 Coconut Tequila with real coconut milk, is his favorite, and one of the most popular with diners. He added that the drink would go great with the steak salad on the menu. When he isn't shaking up drinks at the restaurant, he's trying to do anything on the water. "I've been bartending for 20 years, and this is such a tight-knit group of people to work with," he said about his favorite part of the job. "Honestly, it's the people. It's a big locals’ place. My co-workers are like my best friends, and the owners are really good to me."

Thumb and thumber
Two well-known locals suffered terrible finger tragedies recently. Marathon Mayor Mark Senmartin suffered a construction accident, while realtor Jo Ann Cook was nailed by a lionfish. Days after the accident, Senmartin was still noticeably peeved. “Yeah, everybody kept asking me if I had a permit for my construction project. Ha ha. I was building a storage bin. What do you mean, what for? For crap! It was a little box,” he said. Senmartin said the accident occurred when he “double tapped” with the nail gun. There’s a wealth of jokes here that we can make about the gun store owner, but after our recent series on the subject of guns, I have no intention of reigniting that fire storm. The nail passed through two fingers, made at least one of Senmartin’s sons a little gray around the gills, and was discovered to not have broken any bones. Lucky so-and-so. How bad did it hurt on a scale of 1 to 10? “When it happened, like a 12. Right now, it’s probably like a 2,” Senmartin said. Meanwhile, Realtor Jo Ann Cook is bearing up with considerable grace and dignity. For Cook, the opening of grouper season is a “national holiday” and she never misses the chance to spearfish. This year, the tables were turned and she was gored by a nasty lionfish. “My thumb modeling career is over. I am going to stick to real estate,” she said, laughing. “But poor Mark Senmartin … can you imagine walking around with a nail in your fingers?” Cook said the pain was considerable and the journey from “hero to zero” was very quick. She said it felt like liquid acid coursing through SARA her veins, causing her arm to immediately go MATTHIS numb before swelling up like a “watermelon.” She gives the lionfish jab a 14 on a scale from 1 thinks commuto 10. nity journalism is important, but “I would rather give birth 10 times in a row not serious; likes before I would do this again,” she said. weird and wonHer injury required surgery, (as a tiny venderful children omous barb was left behind after the first doc(she has two). tor visit), leading to unchecked necrosis, which Occasionally she is “doctor talk” for your thumb turning red, then tortures herself green, then black — all the while it’s a source of with sprint-distance triathlons, unspeakable pain. but only if she has When given advance notice on the heada good chance of line, Senmartin, a known stickler for the beating her sister. rules, immediately complained. “It wasn’t my thumbs.” Shhh, Mark, just shhh.

ANTI-SOCIAL MEDIA
Turning the personal impersonal thanks to cutting edge digital technology
T
oday’s modern technology allows us to be connected to our world in ways we’ve never been connected before. Through the miracle of widespread WiFi and the myriad handheld gadgets that connect to it, we’re never far away from our friends, family, or office. We can email or tweet our thoughts, send status updates, photos, and video through Facebook and something called Instagram and something else called Pinterest and even something else called Snapchat. We can text everybody in our contact list and expect to hear back from them instantly. Unfortunately, all this ability to connect with each other has really gotten in the way of our ability to truly connect with each other. The virtual world has become more appealing than the real world to a generation of tech users hell-bent on defining their reality on their JOHN terms. There’s just one problem with that: reality doesn’t BARTUS bend to the wishes of the virtual world! So we have a new generation of tech users who are is a City Council becoming incapable of functioning in the real world. member and a Dinner – it used to be a time when the family or friends former Mayor of would come together for a communal shared experience the City of Marathon. John is also over a tasty meal. Now, dinner seems to be nothing more a musician who than a collection of people with gadgets, connected more performs around to their virtual friends and family than their real ones town at various across the table. You can say good morning or good night establishments. to all your Facebook friends, and let them in on all the things going on in your day. And nothing is more annoying at a live music performance than people paying more attention to their devices than the musicians performing on stage. My favorites are the people who come into a live music event wearing their Dr. Dre headphones to block out the live music, conversation with friends, or anything else. And let’s not ignore the ever-present Selfie Sticks. While on vacation recently, I saw far too many people taking far too many photos of themselves. I actually observed one young woman walk around the entire beach and pool grounds of a resort stopping every few steps to take photos of herself at every conceivable angle and location. I’m not saying that this behavior is a bit narcissistic… oh, wait: yes, I am. In the slightly less self-obsessed world, one might rather have photos of the destination than photos of himself or herself. And why pick up a phone (and use it as a phone) and actually have a conversation where you can actually hear the other person’s voice? Just send a text instead! (SMH…) It’s bad, and it’s not going to get better. But if the new digital generation turns out to be more interested in virtual sex than real sex, well … problem solved? • • • • • John performs live Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek at the Holiday Inn Express, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, this Friday at the Florida Keys Country Club, this Saturday at Havana Jack’s and the Key Colony Inn, and Sunday at Holiday Isle at the Postcard Inn in Islamorada. www.johnbartus.com
I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots.
