There are rules, mom’s rules and then there are dad rules. Any kid worth their salt knows each is a tiny bit different and will maximize the discrepancies to their full potential. With Father’s Day on Sunday, we sought out five kids to learn what makes hanging out with dad so much fun. We asked …
Fresh Shucked Oysters Peel And Eat Shrimp Chilled 1/2 Maine Lobster FRESH SHUCKED GRILLED OYSTERS
What does daddy let you get away with when mom isn’t around? Kinley Patterson of Key West takes her father, Andy Patterson, into the kitchen. “My dad and I make cheesecake together and it’s delicious. I love it with chocolate,” she said.
Lydia Patterson, sister to Kinley, said Andy Patterson breaks out the console and controllers. “Video games! He lets me play Mario Kart with him.”
Eight-yearold Ray Scuderi of the Upper Keys was reluctant to give up too many secrets, but says his dad Perry lets him stay up later and watch inappropriate movies … like “Jurassic World.”

TDC and Monroe County argue advertising vs. affordable housing By Britt Myers
C
an one be guilty of doing their job too well? That’s what the Tourist Development Council and the Lodging Association were asking officials at Tuesday’s TDC meeting in Key West. The question has been lingering since a February meeting in Marathon, when the Monroe County Workforce Housing Committee discussed the possibility of designating the TDC’s fourth penny, collected as a bed tax, as a possible funding source for workforce housing. Some argue the TDC’s successful marketing efforts are a Catch 22. Although the Keys have experienced record increases in hotel rates and occupancy, so too have the cost of living, rents and property increased adding more demand to a stressed workforce housing supply. Not everyone is convinced the means justifies the end.
“We are already funding this important issue,” said TDC board member Julie Fondriest. “It takes a paycheck to pay the rent. Our job is to create a paycheck for the working people.” In addition to job creation, Fondriest referenced the fifth penny tax, or impact fee, which is already assigned to the county’s general revenue fund. Once collected, the county designates half of those funds (about $4 million) to the Land Authority for workforce housing that is generally used for buying land. Many contend the tourism industry is one of the few entities currently contributing to workforce housing — bolstering the TDC’s argument to leave the fourth penny in place. “To cut our budget by 25 percent is very alarming,” said TDC board member Rita Irwin. “I don’t know if there is a model that says once you reach a certain level of success, that you cut back. It seems very short sighted.” Others joined Irwin in opposing the measure. Spottswood Properties’ Cliff Taylor, Key West Chamber head Vir-
ginia Panico and Lodging Association President Jodi Weinhofer all cautioned against reduced marketing funds. Taylor called for more developers to step up, while Weinhofer and Panico called for stiffer penalties and enforcement for illegal rentals. But County Mayor Heather Carruthers said the discussion item was only one option and urged the TDC and others in the tourism industry to consider every possibility for affordable workforce housing. Although Carruthers said she would “agree to NOT touch the fourth penny,” she didn’t address the county’s ability to amend the use of the fifth penny; something that will likely be discussed at a Monroe County Affordable Housing Advisory Committee meeting on Friday, June 17. Currently, the fourth penny is designated for the TDC’s district advisory committees’ capital projects and promotions, with an estimated value of $9 million in the upcoming budget year. The tax was created through a referendum in 2009 and would take a 4-1 majority vote on the BOCC to begin the amendment process. Several BOCC members have already indicated they would not be in favor of the amendment.

DENIM & DIAMONDS The Rotary Club of Key West hosted its second annual Casino Night this past weekend at Marriott Beachside. The theme was “Denim and Diamonds” as attendees rolled the dice, split aces and bet on red to raise more than $8,500 for Take Stock in Children. Event co-chairs, and sisters, Jessica and Jill Cranney contributed countless hours of planning to the successful soirée, which offered thousands of dollars in raffle prizes. WEEKLY INTERVIEW
UPPER KEYS / MARATHON / KEY WEST / WEEKLY / JUNE 17, 2016
The luckiest father in the world
M
andy Rodriguez of the Dolphin Research Center is sincerely excited about every facet of life — dolphins, certainly, plus the changes to the Grassy Key institution, current events, children, and the simple pleasure of resting under a shade tree and hearing birdsong. He is the patriarch of the Dolphin Research Center, but also a passel of children and multiple families of dolphins. “I’m the luckiest man in the world,” he repeats again and again. And, “My life is the story of the American Dream.” Mandy Rodriguez came to the United States at the age of 10, landing in Spanish Harlem. At 20, he enlisted in the Marines and spent 10 months in Vietnam. “I saw the most horrific things … but I also met incredible friends, my brothers,” he said. When he returned to the U.S., he got a job as a low-level dolphin trainer at Miami’s Seaquarium. Knowing there had to be a different way to learn and interact with the powerful animals, something less “circus-y,” he sought an education at the New England Aquarium. In 1984, he moved to the Keys where the Flipper Sea School became the Dolphin Research Center under the guidance of Rodriguez, and his late wife Jayne. The facility’s mission hasn’t changed much since it’s beginning. The goal is to treat dolphins with respect, give them forever homes and teach about the animals while learning from them. Dolphins aren’t “magic,” Mandy says, but they have a unique ability to accept humans which often starts a healing process. Approximately how many kids have you raised, not counting dolphins? I have been lucky enough to play a part in raising nine children. You and your wife Della are raising your three grandchildren. How is it different on the second go around? First of all, I'm the luckiest man ever to have such a wonderful wife, best friend and partner. Without her I wouldn't be able to accomplish this. As a young parent you are not prepared. You think you are … but babies don't come with instructions, so you start making it up as you go along. The second time around, you have a better idea how it all works, and you may be able to predict and avoid some of the problems that arise. I say to them, ‘When you’re done with your tantrum, I'll be over there.’ I realized that raising kids is not a democracy, I'm in charge.

SARA MATTHIS

RODRIGUEZ
If you were not training dolphins what would you be doing instead? I've always wanted to be a cartoonist or something to do with art. How old are you? I will be 67 in a few months. Who is your favorite dolphin? I guess like all parents would say, who ever needs me most at the moment. But I do have a favorite, his name was Natua. You left Cuba at a young age. What parts of the Cuban culture are still a part of your life today? I'm proud to say that I'm CubanAmerican. Although born in Cuba, I was raised in the USA, but it's my cooking where my Cuban culture stands out. Describe the most amazing moment, in your opinion, at DRC. Every day. I don't take a single moment for granted at DRC. What have dolphins taught you? Dolphins saved me from becoming a statistic. I came out of Vietnam with PTSD. In 1969 we didn't know a thing about this horrible illness. If dolphins wouldn't have
accepted me, I seriously don't know were I would be today.
Name something your kids do that’s guaranteed to drive you up the wall. Not listening.
Why did your family come to the United States? My family fled Cuba in 1959 because of Fidel Castro and his band of &%$#@*&.
Name something your kids do that’s guaranteed to melt your heart. Just about everything else … kids are an amazing.
Your name is Armando, but you go by ‘Mandy.’ Is this why you wear a mustache? People that don't know me and hear the name Mandy are extremely surprised when a 6-foot, 230-pound man shows up. It's kind of fun to see their reaction.
Finish these sentences ... When I grow up I want to … work with dolphins.
Do people sometimes call you Tom Selleck? Not really. There’s a new movie being released this summer called ‘Good Fish.’ Who plays Mandy Rodriguez? Tom Selleck. Coca-Cola, coffee or champagne? I'm a good Cuban and drink my Bustelo, but champagne is my drink.
When I was a kid I … was a terror. The best advice my dad ever gave me was … if you want to be successful in life, put smart people around you. I keep telling my kids … make good choices and good things will happen. My kids have taught me ... love, patience and how to be a kid again.

UPPER KEYS FATHERS This year will be the first Father’s Day with a little girl in the house for 11-year-old Vic Franchini and his dad, VICTOR FRANCHINI. Mikayla was born October 25, 2015. For Father’s Day, Mikayla’s mom is getting dad a two-hour shiatsu massage. “He will want to go out on the boat with his family,” Christi added. “And he always cooks for the family so I will be doing the cooking that day. He spoils us rotten.” Christi said Victor is great dad whose only ultimatum so far is that he will not wear a tutu during tea (because of mom’s affinity for social media) and camo is certainly in this little girl’s future.
He can’t walk or poop in the potty yet, but eight and half month old Finnegan Maki already serves as the first mate for his dad, JASON MAKI. Their first Father’s Day together will be spent relaxing around the house with a bottle or two. “Jason is a playful and loving father,” said Finn’s mom, Leah, who is looking forward to creating wonderful memories this Sunday.

BUILDING A FAMILY LEGACY
The third generation of D’Ascanios work in the business
T
By Sara Matthis
he Polaroid photo from 1959 shows a grainy image of a tiny wooden shack on a Grassy Key beach. There’s one square window, the only visible opening. A scraggly line of young trees sprout in the dirt front yard. That, friends, is the Keys homestead of the D’Ascanio family. The photo hangs in the conference room in the 25,000-square-foot showroom of D’Asign Source in Marathon, a residential design and construction company. The image serves two purposes — to remind family and employees of the firm’s humble roots, while reminding them to dream big. “We’re very approachable,” said Franco D’Ascanio. “Yes, we do high-end work, but we also do smaller jobs like kitchen and bath remodels and landscaping jobs that start at $10,000. What we offer is good value for people who want quality.” It’s a lesson the family learned at the knee of the patriarch; the late Palmerino D’Ascanio. The Italian-born immigrant had an eighth-grade education but a boundless appetite for life. “Family, fishing, or work,” said Franco D’Ascanio, Jr. “That's what my grandfather was interested in.” He started by creating ornamental cement products — tables, planters, etc. His three young boys — Tony, Franco, and Amedeo — lead the lives of beach bums on Grassy Key, scavenging and fishing. But when Palmerino moved the company down the highway to Marathon, the boys set to work.
“It was our job to move the countless little tin buckets of gravel for mixing concrete,” said Amedeo, the youngest of the three boys. Gradually, Palmerino began transferring the business ownership to the second generation. Tony, Franco, and Amedeo all had a hand in growing the business by adding new elements — flooring sales, audio/visual equipment, interior finishes, etc. Now, Franco handles the firm’s new research and development division (more on that later), Tony specializes in construction, and Amedeo heads the design and engineering division. One of the most exciting aspects of the family business, Franco said, is the spin-off of Coastal Source, a company that creates saltwater-resistant speakers, lighting, and outdoor systems. The R&D happens in a series of labs adjacent to the showroom, and came to fruition out of D’Asign Source's needs for resilient equipment for the homes and resorts they were building.
“D’Asign Source and Coastal Source are just two of our business ventures built to defy the elements,” said Franco. “We want to make things last for generations.” And now the third generation is at work. Franco Jr. is a registered architect and Nicholas a landscape architect, together they handle the architectural/ construction and landscape sides of the business, including a 20-acre coastal-specific plant nursery in West Palm. Felicia works in the Coastal Source offices. Tonya is in the accounting department and Anthony is an estimator at D’Asign Source. Of course, Palmerino didn’t do it alone. He had the help of a strong woman — Margarita, 84. Right now the matriarch lives with her son Amedeo, but she has every intention of moving into an apartment the family is currently renovating next to the showroom. In fact, it’s the apartment she and Palmerino built and lived in when her sons were just young boys. “She wants to be near the construction yard, she wants to see the action,” said Amedeo. “I’m sure she’ll make us all fresh Italian bread and cookies, and bring them over to the showroom every day,” said Franco Jr. “Come by and try some!"
The family’s first home was in this beachside shack on Grassy Key.

ichael Mooney calls his dad “an inspiration,” and says “He's the most honest and hardworking person I know." Erica DeMott calls her dad “the epitome of the small town guy.” Jim Mooney is a Realtor, businessman, coach and champion of Islamorada, but above all, he is a dedicated father to his kids Erica and Michael. “You can’t go out to lunch with Dad without realizing that you are going to lunch with everyone in the restaurant,” jokes Erica. The memories of her dad are plentiful, fond and revolve around ski trips, hide-and-go-seek and boating with friends. “He always had all the kids on our boat. My dad was super playful,” she says. “Mr. Fun.” Mooney likens raising kids and his work as an Islamorada councilman to that of a coach. “You have to learn to slide left and right of center,” he says. “Find some greys and try not to step out of bounds. Kids are not always happy. People are not always happy. You have to learn to live with that. Follow the rules and everything is good.” Erica recalls her teenage years in the late ’90s when her dad and Ron Levy were spearheading Islamorada’s incorporation movement with “impromptu meetings.” Mooney was selected to serve on the very first Islamorada Village Council from 1998-2000 and in 2014 he reclaimed his seat on the dais and is currently Islamorada’s vice mayor. These days Jim is preparing for his next adventure — that of a grandfather. Erica and her husband are expecting a girl in October. Erica says both her mom and dad taught her many important life lessons that translated into her own business, like “Don’t be afraid to take chances and put yourself out there.” “Say ‘no’ to the work you don’t want to do and ‘yes’ to the work you do want to do.”

“Kids will make mistakes,” Jim says. “You can count on that. Cause if they don’t that means they are doing nothing and taking no risk. You cannot succeed if you haven’t failed.” Erica and her husband have established a real estate and property management company. Michael is part of a wave of young Islamorada entrepreneurs who are not afraid to get dirty and take chances. “He makes me a better person with each day that passes,” Michael said. “I'm grateful not only for his wisdom but his insatiable passion for life.” The pride Islamorada’s vice mayor has for his kids is undeniable and although he says he has learned a thing or two from the both of them, “I am not going to let them know that.”

arlier this week Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection told county officials the historic 7 Mile Bridge will be closed July 5 for up to a year. The Knight’s Key Pedestrian Underpass comes with a $1.9 million price tag and is funded entirely by state and federal monies. Plans include adding handicap ramps from the parking lot at the base of the bridge down to the water on both the ocean and gulf side. Other enhancements will be the additional of tiki huts, picnic tables and trash cans on the gulfside recreational area. The bridge could end up off limits to recreational use for as many as two to three years as DOT could start the $77 million rehabilitation of the bridge itself in early 2017.

“Part time warm up partner, part time pitching machine, part time baseball critic, full time dad” Baseball dads take on Omaha with Lower Keys Barracudas
W
By Kristen Livengood hile a lot of Keys dads are spending Father’s Day leisurely on the couch, or the sandbar, a handful of local dads are spending their Father’s Day flying home from Omaha, Nebraska – where they are hoping to bring home baseball tournament glory with their boys playing for the Lower Keys
Barracudas. Leaving last Monday out of Key West airport, dads like Coach Chris Rady have been playing with a group of core players since they were four years old. When the kids were six, they were playing eightyear-olds in tournaments, “We got our butts kicked, but learned from the experience,” said Rady, and the practice over the years has paid off. The Omaha trip is an invite-only tournament taking place over three weeks, and the team has what it takes to make it pretty far because of their talent and the coaching staff made up of volunteer dads like Rady, Head Coach Drew Haggard, Jason Roberts, and grandpa Greg MacLaren. They won their first game in extra innings “and have been holding on strong and playing competitively with a lot of heart,” said mom of player Jack Haggard, Ginny, from the Omaha sidelines on Wednesday. Rady has an athletic background in soccer, but learned baseball through coaching his son Anden, who plays pitcher, third base, and shortstop with 10 other teammates who live between Marathon
There is nothing I would rather do than this. It’s a rewarding experience to be a dad and a coach. — Chris Rady
and Key West. “The majority of the kids have been together since the beginning,” he said, adding that each coach has their own strengths. “I learned the game from being a coach, and my military background holds them accountable for everything they do.” The team’s philosophy includes raising respectful, good men. “Baseball isn’t everything,” he said. “We strive for good manners and building good rapport.” The team was complimented several times on the trip for being so well behaved – sometimes a tough feat for about a dozen 10-year-olds. And, taking on travel baseball is a huge commitment for the families, with most weekends away at tournaments and fourto-five evening practices a week. “There is nothing I would rather do than this,” Rady said. “It’s a rewarding experience to be a dad, and a coach.” To follow the highlights of the team, search Lower Keys Barracudas Travel Baseball on Facebook – where dad Drew keeps everyone informed on the team’s progress.
“I love that I get to have all these great experiences with my Dad and PopPop.” – Anden Rady of the Lower Keys Barracudas baseball team

Left: The team is excited to be playing in Omaha, and has been raising money locally with car washes and raffles since they got the invite. Players are Anden Rady, Jack Haggard, Mack Hill, Wyatt Kuhn, Jay Osborn, Lucky Borosso, Andrew Roberts, Dylan Ziels, Ben Hiller, Trevor Zuelch, and Gabe Williams.

P
lans for the new energy efficient Marathon Library and Adult Education Center were unveiled Wednesday at the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners meeting in Key Largo. “We are trying to build a facility that meets the community’s needs,” Monroe County Projects Management and Facilities Director Doug Sposito said. Artist renditions and floor plans of the 14,861 square-foot facility were shown. They include 12,322 square feet of dedicated library space (about double the space of the existing library); 2,539 square feet for adult education; and 46 parking spaces at a 3.8-acre site. The library’s new location will be to the east of Stanley Switlik School, oceanside, at 35th Street and the Overseas Highway in Marathon. It also will have a climate controlled archival space for the Monroe County History Department. Design and construction documents are expected to be completed in December, with construction beginning in Spring 2017. If all goes well, the new facility is expected to open in Spring 2018. The facility is being built 2 feet above the elevations required by the code and will be able to withstand hurricane winds of 200 mph.
Upper Keys Sailing Club • 100 N. Ocean Bay Drive, • Key Largo, FL • MM 100

It also will meet requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The building also will meet Florida Green Building Coalition standards, with 16 green items that include low flow plumbing fixtures, LED lighting, native landscaping that needs little to no irrigation, bicycle racks and an electric car charging station. “I read through all 52 pages of the plan, and I was impressed,” said Monroe County Commissioner David Rice, who represents Marathon. Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers and Commissioner George Neugent both asked that Sposito also investigate adding solar panels to the project. Construction costs for the building are budgeted for $6 million, which includes IT equipment for Monroe County but not the School Board. That price tag also does not include furniture or fixtures. Architecture costs are $506,000. The County is still deciding what to do with the existing Marathon Library when the new facility is done. “We may repurpose the old library, which could have a few more years of use,” Sposito said. “There are a lot of ideas out there right now we are sorting through them.”

Fishermen’s Community Hospital Foundation unveils masterpiece
Fishermen’s Community Hospital Foundation invited all its donors to a function Wednesday to unveil the new donor wall. Unlike any other in the Keys, the typical brass plaques have been replaced with a mural decorated with custom clay starfish and glass fish depicting an underwater scene. Sheila Cook and her staff from The Art Studio spent seven months completing the masterpiece. The occasion was also the chance to announce a recent donation from a former patient and show-off a newly renovated hospital room, courtesy of Halliburton Foundation. It features new flooring, new furniture and more and staff hopes to re-do the other 18 rooms in a similar manner. — Weekly Staff report

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? The class that prepared me best for life after high school would be psychology because we learn the study of the behavior and mind and how it functions in certain circumstances. What is your favorite social media and why? Who do you follow? My favorite social media is Instagram because I love to see what people are up to especially ones I don’t see often. I follow friends, family and can’t forget Beyonce. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenge facing the Keys is the inability to choose from thousands of people for sports. In Miami, if you want a star shortstop, they are easy to find. But in the Keys you have to make a star out of the kid. What are your plans after high school? My plans after high school are hopefully continue my softball career to the next level and get a degree at the same time, maybe in Tallahassee.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I think I will make the Keys my permanent home because I am fourth generation Conch and I absolutely love the support this community has for each other. It amazes me how you might not even know the person, but we come together to support people in crisis.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? Some activities and organizations I’m involved in at KWHS are softball, cheerleading, soccer, executive board, Csalt, and SWAT. The sports have been a part of my life since I was four and the clubs get me involved with my class. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? My biggest inspiration at KWHS would be my uncle, George Mira, because he was one the football players who left a great legacy since he continued on to play in the NFL. He managed to stay determined and focused and proved hard work pays off. His jersey is still hanging in the gym.

Master Sheller, Father and Grandfather HAYS BLINCKMANN

t’s hard to have a conversation with Greg Curry without him mentioning one of his four children or one of his seven grandchildren. Curry can be described as an earnest, kind and gentle man with an enormous passion for his family as well as his avid hobby collecting seashells. A fifth-generation descendent of the local Curry family, he was born and raised in Key West, graduated Key West High in 1964 and married his high school sweetheart, Annie in 1966. Curry has spent 41 years with Tropical Shell and Gifts which was a natural fit with his love of shelling and Key West. Now on the eve of his 50th wedding anniversary, Curry maintains his same dedication to his beloved Annie as well as his growing family. “If you greet them, you gotta feed them,” Curry laughed as he reflects on raising kids, and a saying he once spotted on a highway sign years ago. He has always been a hands-on father, either having the kids come to work with him or taking them to any activity Marcelina they wanted to pursue. Curry’s motto on fatherhood, “I Annabel never wanted them to wish they had Greg Jr. ‘done that’ so if it was dance or basketball we did it with them. You have to be there for them.” Now, Curry takes Colbin Michael his role as grandfather very seriously. “I’m the spoiler, without a doubt. Sawyer I am the ‘worst’ grandfather in the world. I have been banned from the Lynly Kmart toy section,” Curry said with a Kaysel twinkle in his eyes. Socializing with his kids and grandkids is an almost daily activity. “You always hope you taught them right, pass on the good things, now I am so proud of what each of them have done,” he said. Next week, Curry will be surrounded by his family to celebrate 50 years of doing it right. Most likely they will be spoiling him

Fisheries fight for fairness Annual meeting is about safety and rights JASON KOLER
jason@keysweekly.com
M
embers of the Southeastern Fisheries Association gathered in Key Largo last week to discuss legislative changes, industry regulations and how to protect their harvesting rights. “The recreational side is a lot more powerful than us,” said SFA Executive Director Bob Jones. “They get about 73 percent of all the finfish allocated in the South Atlantic. We are just trying to hold onto the allocations that we have because without us, most folks in the world wouldn’t be able to enjoy fresh seafood.” Organized in 1952, the group lobbies on behalf of the commercial fishermen who operate in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. About 90 percent of their membership is in Florida and they alternate their annual meeting between Orlando (convenient and centrally located) with Monroe County (for obvious reasons). “Monroe County is number one in the state for producing seafood,” Jones said. “The boys down there are good and they know what they are doing.” He is referring to members such as Gary Graves and Greg D’Agostino from Keys Fisheries (Marathon), Colleen Quirk with Fishbusterz (Key West) and the Hill brothers from Key Largo Fisheries.
The two-day event included networking, luncheons and roundtable discussions with those making the biggest impact on the lives of the commercial fishing industry – like FWC Director Nick Wiley. “I know how much you guys believe in the science and that you want good science,” he said during a round table discussion that covered all sorts of issues from lobster mini-season (which isn’t going anywhere) to tightening the criteria for those with a wholesale fish license. “If you are going to give someone a wholesale license to sell to the public they need to know how to handle the product,” said Tom Hill.
COMMERCE CORNER FLORIDA’S GUARDIAN AD LITEM Florida’s Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) Program, is a state government nonprofit agency, established locally in 1985 which advocates for the best interest of children alleged to be abused, abandoned or neglected who are involved in court proceedings. This means preserving the child’s physical safety and emotional well-being; finding a permanent placement in a stable and nurturing home environment that fosters the child’s healthy growth and development; and protecting the child from further harm during their involvement in the court system. The GAL Program is a team approach that comprises a partnership of court appointed community advocates and professional staff providing a powerful voice on behalf of Florida’s abused and neglected children. GAL Volunteers bring a community based, common sense approach to the children’s cases. The unique perspective and expertise of each team member complements the others and all are critical in advocating for the best interests of children. “The 16th Judicial Guardian Ad Litem program is one of the few programs able to accept 100% of these cases,” said Outreach Coordinator Anissah Tomas. “We are able to do this because of staff and our amazing volunteers, whom are truly dedicated child advocates.” Volunteers are the lifeline of the program. “We are committed to ensuring that every child in our system has a dedicated volunteer assigned to them as well as professional GAL support staff,” said Tomas. “To do this we need everyone’s help. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. They are people, just like you, who believe that every child has the right to be treated with dignity, to be safe in a nurturing and loving environment and that their best interests are being served.” In the Florida Keys community, there are more than 200 abused, abandoned and neglected children who live in the shadows. If you or anyone you know is interested in learning how to get involved, call at 305-783-6978.
The roundtable discussions between regulators and commercial fishermen included state Representative Holly Raschein, left, and Fish and Wildlife Director Nick Wiley, third from right.
There are three locations, Key West, Marathon, and Key Largo. Phone Number: 305-783-6978 Website: guardianadlitem.org Facebook: fb.com/FloridaGAL16JudicialCircuit Email: Anissah.tomas@gal.fl.gov

t has not been a good week for Orlando. Last Friday, some whacko nutjob killed Christina Grimmie, a 22-year-old singer who reached fame on “The Voice” TV show. She had just finished a performance at The Plaza Live theater and was signing autographs at a meet-and-greet when the nutjob approached her and opened fire. Christina’s brother, Marcus, is credited with tackling the nutjob and possibly preventing even more deaths and injuries. The nutjob shot himself after being tackled by Marcus Grimmie. Just over 24 hours later, another whacko nutjob went to the Pulse nightclub in Orlando and murdered 49 clubgoers while wounding another 53. This has been described as the worst mass shooting in American history, although the Lakota victims of Wounded Knee in 1890 might disagree. It certainly was the worst mass shooting by a lone gunman, however. And then days later, an alligator emerged from the lake waters on the beach of the Seven Seas Lagoon at the Disney World resort and snatched a two-yearold toddler, taking him to his death. His parents were nearby, and the boy’s father went into the water after the alligator, trying in vain to save his son. Heartbreak after heartbreak. I can’t even begin to imagine how the friends and families of the victims of these tragedies are trying to cope with their losses. How does the family of a young rising star deal with the JOHN senseless tragedy of a life lost far too early? How do the BARTUS friends and family of young people just out for a good time on a Saturday night reconcile that they will never is a City Council see their friends and loved ones ever again? How do the member and a first responders on the scene of the carnage at the Pulse former Mayor of the City of Maradeal with hearing the cell phones of the deceased victims thon. John is also keep ringing and ringing, knowing that friends and family a musician who are trying desperately to reach their missing loved ones? performs around And how does a family go from enjoying their Florida town at various vacation one minute to losing a child and having their establishments. world totally upended a split second later? These are hard questions. But there are some other hard questions that must also be asked, and we owe it to ourselves as one human family to try and find some answers. What makes a person decide one day to take an innocent life? What was it that inspired the first nutjob mentioned in this column to travel from St. Petersburg to Orlando to murder a beautiful and talented young singer — a singer he did not know personally at all — at the beginning of a potentially wonderful music career? How does a man find it within himself to take up arms in the name of some hate-filled radical philosophy he reads about online to go and murder 49 people while wounding another 53 — just because they were at a gay nightclub? How does someone who was previously under FBI investigation for his conduct and violent radical tendencies just go into a gun shop and buy an assault rifle? And just as bad, how do a few so-called Christian and Muslim “pastors” use their pulpits and social media to say that these shootings were justified? How can an alleged “man of Christ” claim that a just and godly government should round up gays and have them executed by firing squad? How does a big-time TV evangelist get away with saying it would be great if the gays and the Muslims just all killed each other? We live in sad and scary times. Heartbroken as we are, the answers to these questions are hard to find. If we are to grow as a society, then we need to try and answer them… if not for ourselves, then for the memories of those lost to senseless violence and hatred. ***** - John Bartus is a singer/songwriter, City Council Member, and former Mayor of the City of Marathon. John performs Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek at the Holiday Inn Express, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, tonight (Friday) at the Florida Keys Country Club, Saturdays at the Postcard Inn and the Key Colony Inn, and Sundays at the Lorelei. www.johnbartus.com.

ana Collins began his music career while attending East Carolina University in the early ‘70s. His band Singletree toured the East Coast opening shows for the likes of the Marshal Tucker Band and ZZ Top. Then he toured with the Super Grit Cowboy Band continuing to open concerts for Waylan Jennings, Willie Nelson and more. Then it was off to Nashville with fiddle player Vassar Clements while working with a who’s who list of entertainers including Bob Dylan, Clint
Black, Faith Hill and Travis Tritt. “I found the Keys in 1974,” Collin said, adding that it’s been his more permanent base in the two decades or so. In his current incarnation, Collins can be found alongside his band that includes Geoff Colmes (bass), Leo Dube (keyboard and vocals) and Rob Collins (drums and vocals). For listeners, it’s a guaranteed good time. “We cover everything from reggae hits to Clapton to Santana to Tom Petty,” Collins said. “And we’re also working on a dozen of my own originals. We love to jam and when it’s grooving, we zig zag around the song, communicating visually and musically.” The Dana Collins Band plays regularly at such venues as the Lorelei and Morada Bay. He also plays other solo gigs at Snapper’s, Pines & Palms and The Islander. He’s released three CD’s in the past few years “Get Wet” in 2000 and “Dana Collins & The Nobodies” in 2015. Mimi makes Key Lime Martinis at Square Grouper on Summerland Key.

B
artender Mimi won’t take pictures and do interviews with just anybody — she likes to stay off the radar — but The Weekly was able to catch her on a good day to speak with the 13-year Square Grouper mainstay. She said their signature Key Lime Martini is the most popular cocktail on the menu, made with fresh squeezed juices and a very appealing homemade key lime curd they make from scratch in the kitchen. “It’s delicious,” she said while handing one over the bar a couple nights prior. Mimi has been slinging drinks at Square Grouper since it opened, and works three nights a week – her regulars know the nights. She said the drink goes best with the fish special, no matter the day. “It’s always a winner,” she said. If it’s not martini and fish, try one of the many other specialty cocktails paired with the Key Lime Pasta with Shrimp. “It’s soooooo good.” When Mimi isn’t putting smiles on her customer’s faces, she’s out on the water gracing Marvin Key with her presence or exploring the shallows by her home via paddleboard. “I love enjoying all the things the Keys have to offer,” said the 26-year resident, a native of Philly.

DAD’S WISDOM
L
ast Saturday, Rick Ramsay delivered an emotional eulogy at his father’s celebration of life. His words drew tears from many of the thousand guests that filed into the Monroe County Sheriff’s Hangar to pay their last respects. He spoke of the daily conversations with his dad, Dick Ramsay, and called on all those in attendance to reach out to their loved ones and treat every day JASON as if it were their last. KOLER Dick Ramsay’s death was unexpected but no more so than the death of Ron Betchker. I first born in Florida met this barrel-chested giant of a man when I was and raised in 7 or 8 years old. He worked 70 hours a week at US Ohio, he is the “better looking Steel, but had enough patience to teach a kid how and way smarter” to pick glass out of carpet rather than chastise Keys Weekly him for breaking it in the first place. Mr. Betchker publisher. When was my childhood best friend’s dad. I remember not chasing his he was the captain of my first ever boat ride. children or rubbing his wife’s Without a doubt, and for better and worse, feet, he enjoys I learned my best lessons from my own dad, folding laundry George. That guy is the best and is still teaching and performing me life essentials: respect, hard work and to have experimental live faith in fellow man. He’s the best man I know. publishing. Just hearing his voice on the other end of the line seems to help when times are tough. When I think of him I can’t help but feel regret for those who lost their dad early in life. But I have learned much from other dads as well — limiting my use of the word “no” and never turning down an opportunity to play catch. Dick taught me perseverance. That guy would not quit for anything and always thought (and rightfully so most times) that he was going to come out ahead. These guys, among numerous others, are often in the back of my mind at the oddest moments. I can only hope that someday my boys, and their friends, think of me in the same way.
BRIEFLY Special Olympians compete on June 25 In 2013, Florida became the first state to offer Standup Paddleboard (SUP) in Special Olympics thanks to the dedication of Ruth Holland, head coordinator for the Special Olympics Florida Monroe County. The program has three teams that provide inclusion for all eligible athletes who live in Key Largo to Key West: the Key West Conchs, the Middle Keys Dolphins, and the Upper Keys Manatees. These exceptional individuals have been training rigorously with their coaches and volunteers for the upcoming Area 11 games. On June 25, Special Olympics Florida athletes from Monroe and Miami-Dade counties will be competing in Area Games at Marker 88 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The results will qualify them for the State Stand Up Paddleboard games in September at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. The public is invited to come cheer them on and discover what Spe-
cial Olympics SUP is all about. Special Olympic Florida Monroe County relies on the generosity of the community and volunteers as Special Olympics Florida Monroe County never charges athletes, their family or caregivers for participation in our programs. VISIT PERU on White Street
Inca’s ceviche has been voted the best in Key West.
Inca’s is a Peruvian experience HAYS BLINCKMANN
W
hays@keysweekly.com
anna go to Peru? Or at least pretend you’re there? Old Town Key West has a secret, a little slice of South America right on White Street. Inca’s Restaurant takes you straight to Peru from decor to flavor. Nestled amongst the art galleries and conch houses, sits one of the most exotic little eateries in town. Owners Christopher and Guilianna Belotti compare Key West to their hometown, Barranca, Peru. “It’s the small streets and the ocean, also every one is so friendly, it is just like our village at home,” said Christopher Belotti, who has been charmed by Key West for the past decade. Following family who moved here years ago, the Belottis were familiar with the restaurant business. Giuliana’s father had a successful restaurant for 25 years in Peru before moving here. “We use the recipes from that restaurant, they are all our own and have been with us for years,” said Guilianna. Now, they import everything from fish, wine, and soda to Inca’s to create an authentic Peruvian experience. Multiple sources have voted Inca’s ceviche the “best” in Key West, and they’re right. Inca’s ceviche is an unusual blend of ingredients — Peruvian talapia, yams, roasted corn, red onion and loads of lime juice. It’s not the traditional ceviche Americans expect, but it’s delightfully delicious. The eatery’s sangria also won a “best” and, again, there is no disagreement. The more traditional dishes like Huancaina, a Peruvian cream that can go over chicken or fish, is a curry-like blend of flavor and spices. Or try the Tacu Tacu, an authentic mix of spiced beans and rice paired with your meat of choice. Look for the flavors of the Rocoto or Aji yellow pepper, both native to Peru with just enough heat and flavor to enhance any dish. INCA’S 800 White St., Key West Open 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday. 305.292.1616

ropical fruit lovers will converge at the Tropical Fruit Fiesta on June 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grimal Grove, Big Pine Key. Nowhere else in the Keys can someone be in one location and learn so much about planting, common tree problems and harvesting tropical fruit. Several trees at the grove exist nowhere else in the continental United States. The fiesta is an opportunity to support the grove’s water catchment restoration project. Pine Island Nursery and Grimal Grove Nursery will be selling the best quality fruit trees and University of Florida IFAS experts will be on hand to answer any horticulture questions. There will be food and drink, tropical fruit sampling, a fruit display and fruit auction, and plenty of shade under tents and mature shade and fruit trees. Admission is free at the familyfriendly event with fun kid’s activities like tropical fruit scavenger hunts, planting a piney, and Monroe County Sheriff Office Petting Zoo. Lectures begin at 9:30 a.m. and include Patrick Garvey, director of Gri-
mal Grove, on “Visions for Grimal Grove;” Jeff Wasielewski, UF/IFAS Miami-Dade tropical fruit agent, on “Why won’t my fruit tree grow;” and Richard Campbell from Fairchild Tropical Garden on “Tropical Fruit Trees of the Florida Keys.” This is a zero waste event, so bring water bottles and reusable bags, or purchase a Grimal Grove water bottle to fill up at the free watering holes. Grimal Grove is located at 258 Cunningham Lane. For more information, call 305-9236663 or email patrickbgarvey@ gmail.com. — Kim Gabel is an environmental horticulture agent.
