Trauma Star lands on Shark Key Bridge at mile marker 11.3 of the Overseas Highway on June 9, 2016 to pick up a car crash victim with life-threatening injuries and transport

he Monroe County Board of County Commissioners, at its Wednesday meeting in Key Largo, unanimously approved spending $2.5 million from the voter-supported infrastructure sales tax fund to purchase a 2002 Sikorsky helicopter for its life-saving, Trauma Star air ambulance program.

The helicopter is needed to replace the aging 1981 Sikorsky helicopter, which has flown 2,445 people from the Florida Keys to trauma

centers and hospitals on the mainland since beginning operations in 2006. The County will keep the 1981 Sikorsky – which is still operational but has become increasingly expensive to maintain – as a backup to be used when the 2002 Sikorsky is out of service for routine maintenance.

The 1981 Sikorsky S76 A++ cost the County $3.24 million a decade ago.

The 2002 Sikorsky S-76 C+ helicopter, previously flown by the Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s Angel One air ambulance program, will cost the County about $760,000 less.

“This is like it fell out of the sky … what a terrific solution,” Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers said about the good fortune of finding a helicopter that fits Trauma Star’s needs at such a good price.

The 2002 Sikorsky is similar to Trauma Star’s current helicopter – able to hold two pilots, two patients and up to four caregivers – but it is equipped with more modern avionics and has better lift capabilities that are needed on high humidity days, especially for flying out of hospital helipads that are surrounded by buildings and mangroves, said Trauma Star and EMS Captain Andrea Thompson of Monroe County Fire Rescue.

“It’s the old deal: timing, timing, timing,” Monroe County Fire Rescue Chief James Callahan said. “The Sheriff’s Office mechanics have inspected this bird and it looks like a great deal for us. It’s also a Sikorsky, the same brand the pilots, mechanics, paramedics and nurses are familiar with and enjoy. This helicopter will help us continue to save the lives of people suffering from strokes, heart attacks and critical injuries.”

Trauma Star, which is jointly operated by Monroe County Fire Rescue and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, already has transported 228 people this year, putting it on track for a record year of use.

Trauma Star also is a County service whose operations now almost pay for itself. The program transported a record number of 397 people last year at a cost of $2.7 million. However, revenues collected from insurance and out-of-county patients covered 96 percent of that cost. Taxpayers footed only $285,516 of the bill, or just $1.41 per $100,000 in taxable property.

THREE SPOTS TO PADDLEBOARD IN THE KEYS

One of the Upper Keys locals’ favorite places to paddleboard is through “Toilet Seat Cut.” Nestled between Tavernier Creek and Plantation Yacht Harbor, the shallow pass once spelled trouble for local fisherman. Necessity, and a little island ingenuity, gave way to this manmade marker system that spreads nearly a quarter mile through the bay. More than 200 toilet seats line the sides of the pass, signaling shallow waters. The origins of the first seat have been left to local lore. However, seat ‘planters’ have become a bit bolder in recent years, leaving seats with clever messages such as “Bubba Conch was here.” Well played, my friend. Besides the local “art,” there’s plenty of natural highlights, too —manatees, stingrays, turtles, tarpon, sharks and jellyfish. To book an excursion with Paddle!

MIDDLE KEYS

Marathon has many accessible spots for paddleboarding. One of the most overlooked is Sister’s Creek — the channel that connects Boot Key Harbor from the oceanside at Sombrero Beach to the waters at the foot of the 7 Mile Bridge. The water is deep and well traveled making it less likely to see the natural wildlife, but not impossible, plus it’s protected from the vagaries of the wind. The rest of the environs, though, are impressive. Visitors can get an unobstructed view of the many lovely homes that front Sister’s Creek, and also take a leisurely tour of Boot Key Harbor and the boats moored there. There’s also a couple of places to stop for a bite to eat including Burdines Bar & Grill near the dismantled Boot Key Bridge. It serves the best burger in the Middle Keys. LOWER KEYS

The places to explore in the Lower Keys are endless. Paddle guide Sarah L. Sullivan of Serenity Eco Guides based in Big Pine Key says her top places include the south end of the Seven Mile Bridge, Bahia Honda, No Name Key, Sugarloaf Key Marina, and Geiger Key Marina. “Bahia Honda has to be one of my favorites and the most popular places to launch from,” she said. “You are really able to tune into nature.” She said each spot offers unique qualities, but people really enjoy taking the Geiger Key Marina route because it’s a great place to learn for beginners, and going straight from the board to happy hour is always a plus. hile chatting one day with beekeeper John David from Keez Beez, and brainstorming buzzing ideas for the property, Charlotte Quinn of Crane Point Museum wondered if there was a way to see inside the hive. With a little research and couple of phone calls, the newest exhibit was born. The Bee Observation and Pollination Center gives visitors a look inside the busy bee hive.

One queen sits with her worker bees and drone bees in the Plexiglas hive at Crane Point. “The drones are flying around during the day pollinating and come back in the evening,” said Quinn. One hundred sixty hives are located in the back of the property producing honey sold at Crane Point’s gift shop.

The bees, which were donated by Keez Beez, have made their home in the newest exhibit, which was funded by donations from board member Noah Singh, Organized Fishermen of Florida, and Promotions Guy. “We’re selling honey like crazy,” said Quinn. Fresh local honey made from pollinating Crane Point trees like red and black mangroves, seagrape, and mango blossoms are sold in the gift shop. Keez Beez processes the honey. Local honey starts at $6.95 for a small bottle.

To see the bees (and all the other eco-attractions), day passes are $10-$15 per day or $75 for a family for the whole year. Anyone can browse the gift shop without a pass. Crane Point is located at 5550 Overseas Highway in Marathon.

A WINSOME WASP Newly identified Keylimepie wasp adds to list of iconic Keys species

W

ithin the peaceful depths of our hardwood hammock forests, the story of a fearsome top predator has just come to light. Like the “Aliens” from the movie, it lays its eggs inside a living body where its offspring slowly grow before bursting out of the unsuspecting host’s torso.

Fortunately for the humans of the Keys, this critter is about one-tenth of an inch long and only attacks caterpillars. But in its domain, the Keylimepie peckorum wasp is a top predator, a vital piece of the ecosystem — and a new icon of the Keys, if entomologist Dr. José Fernández-Triana gets his way.

Fernández-Triana discovered the wasp just last month in the Canadian National Collection of Insects. Out of 17 million specimens housed there, the tiny parasitic wasp had been tucked away in a drawer for 30 years, waiting for the right person to understand its significance. Once FernándezTriana identified it as a new species, he named it after its home, to draw attention to the insect as well as the conservation concerns of the delicate hardwood hammock ecosystem of the Keys.

“The beauty of the Keys speaks for itself,” says the Cuban-born researcher, who is now a scientist at the CNC. “The fragility of its ecosystems is less understood, but nevertheless is a problem. I would like the people in the Keys to come to know and appreciate this tiny parasitic wasp.”

Besides its catchy name, the Keylimepie wasp is particularly unusual because the females have very short wings, probably an evolutionary adaptation for flying through tight mangroves to find caterpillars. It is so unusual it is not just a new species, but a new genus of parasitoid wasp attacking caterpillars, the first identified in three decades.

A potential problem, however, is that no living Keylimepie wasps have been documented since those dead samples in the drawer, which date back to 1985.

Between now and then, hurricanes, development and climate change could have led to their extinction.

To find out, Fernández-Triana journeyed to the Keys last week. He set up traps in Long Key State Park and at the Crane Point Museum and Nature Center in Marathon. With the collaboraton of local volunteers, he is creating a long-term monitoring program for the wasp. Regardless, the effort should yield other positive results.

“There are so many unknown species that this collection effort we are starting is bound to find many new things,” he says. Understanding the life of the Keylimepie wasp and other invertebrates believed to be at high risk of extinction, such as the Keys scaly cricket, the mangrove long-horned beetle and the Antillean spreadwing, will ultimately help them and their habitat receive priority for conservation.

owerful boats are to race at high speeds, parallel to the Marathon shoreline near the Middle Keys' world-famous Seven Mile Bridge, during the second annual Marathon Super Boat Grand Prix set for Friday through Sunday, June 24-26.

Racing fans can view the boats and meet drivers and crews from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the free-admission Race Village dry pits, located at Florida Keys Marathon International Airport, mile marker (MM) 51 bayside.

Wet pits are located at the event's headquarters at the marina docks behind the Hyatt Place Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club, 1996 Overseas Highway. Wet pits are to be open to the public Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This location, including the on-site Lighthouse Grill restaurant, outdoor bar and pool, is open for food, beverages and race viewing during the event weekend.

Racers are to be welcomed at a Faro Blanco Boat Party set for 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 24.

Race day is Sunday, June 26, with the first race scheduled for 11 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. Teams are to race in seven classes including Superboat, Superboat Unlimited, Superboat Extreme, Superboat Vee, Superboat Stock, Production 3 and Production 4.

The Gulf of Mexico race course runs parallel to the shoreline from Tranquility Bay Resort at MM 48.5 to the landmark Seven Mile Bridge, with boats turning and finishing at Hyatt Place.

Fans can view the action at no charge from Marathon's Sunset Park, a prime spectator spot at the base of the Seven Mile Bridge, located at MM 47 on the western side of Knight's Key. Private boats are to have a designated bayside viewing area.

An awards presentation is scheduled at Hyatt Place at 5 p.m. Sunday to honor the top finishers in each class.

A gypsy heart and Key West soul

M

any know local author June Keith from her best selling books about the Florida Keys: “Postcards from Paradise: Romancing Key West” and “June Keith's Key West & The Florida Keys: A Guide to the Coral Islands.” But the lady behind the words is equally as colorful as her beloved islands. A native of Nova Scotia, Keith landed in the Keys in the ’70s and was as excited as Darwin in the Galapagos. Her life since has been checkered with iconic moments like dancing at the Esquire lounge, an extra in the famed “Criss Cross” movie, waiting tables at Blue Heaven while writing a Miami Herald column and battling throat cancer not once, but twice. Now, Keith finds herself at the helm of the city as the assistant to the Chief of Police Donie Lee. (She’s also the former assistant to Richard Heyman, who was known as America's first openly gay mayor). Writing is still her passion along with her husband, Michael Keith a songwriter from Nashville and her son, locally well known musician Miguel Perez.

Name one famous person you would bring back to life and why. Marilyn Monroe. I’m sorry she didn’t live long enough to benefit from antidepressants. I think she was a very interesting person and a great actress.

Islamorada exhibit celebrates U.S. National Park Service centennial

hotography and nature fans can explore an exhibit by Florida's legendary black-and-white landscape photographer Clyde Butcher this summer at the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada.

Butcher's exhibit, titled "Celebrating the National Park Service Centennial," runs through Aug. 28 and is sponsored by The Everglades Trust. Butcher is renowned for his photographs of the Florida Everglades and his exhibit salutes the park service's 100th "birthday" on Aug. 25.

"Viewing Butcher's work not only allows the individual a glimpse into the soul of the foremost American landscape photographer of our time, but affords them the opportunity to step away from the technology that encapsulates the modern world and into its simple and awe-inspiring beauty," said Brad Bertelli, curator and historian at the center, located at MM 82 on the property of the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost.

The 24 images on display include 11 that capture Florida's scenic beauty and 13 showcasing national parks in Arizona, California, Maine, New York, Oregon, South Dakota and Wyoming.

For more than 50 years, Butcher, first inspired as a photographer by an Ansel Adams exhibit at Yosemite National Park, has created exquisite black-and-white photographs of North America's untouched natural landscapes and national parks.

Among his many accolades, Butcher has been honored with a lifetime achievement award from the North American Nature Photography Association and the Sierra Club's Ansel Adams Conservation Award, recognizing a photographer's excellence and contributions to public environmental awareness.

"An exhibit of this magnitude offers the opportunity to view world-class artistry that might not otherwise be shown in the Upper Keys. It also exposes the wonderful history of the Upper Keys to our visitors and community members," Bertelli said.

The 7,500-square-foot Discovery Center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. General admission is $12 per adult, $10 for seniors and free for children 13 and under. Medicinal plant chat at Tropical Forest

The City of Marathon completed its wastewater collection system in 2013 and all property owners that generate wastewater were notified of availability and received a 30-day connection notice. All of these properties should now be receiving monthly wastewater charges on their FKAA water bill. The City is currently reviewing all properties and will begin billing those properties that were overlooked in previous billing cycles. The City’s Ordinance allows for back billing of up to 18 months. ONE: THE FORT Fort Zachary Taylor isn’t just a beach. Purchase an annual pass to the Florida State Parks, and head to Ft. Zach (or any state park) any day — morning, noon or sunset. For the littler ones, let them wade in the shallow waters near the rocks or build sandcastles. For bigger kids, teach them snorkeling and kayaking in the protected waters. Go for a stroll around the historic fort, teaching kids history and while getting exercise climbing the steps of the Fort. Grab lunch or an ice cream at The beachfront Cayo Hueso Café.

TWO: PARKS • Bayview Park Green space has facilities for tennis, softball and basketball, plus a playground in the shade, restrooms and picnic areas.

• Higgs Beach playground offers a beachside playground with new equipment under solar shades. Picnic tables are available in the shade as well.

• Cozumel Park is a neighborhood playground in a quiet, tucked away residential area in New Town. It has a jungle gym and areas to run and picnic. Located on 19th Terrace. Great for kid parties.

• Little Hamaca Park has nature trails. It’s also a great place for the kids to practice biking or scootering while next to the Key West Airport Runway. Get up close to airplanes landing and taking off, a treat for kids in love with machines and aviation.

• Nelson English Park and Willie Ward Park have basketball courts, a playground and open space for picnics.

THREE: THE POOL Martin Luther King Jr. Community Pool, 300 Catherine Street, has one baby pool and one standard swimming pool. With open swim hours from 11 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., it’s an oasis for kids.

FOUR: FREE TOURS Historic Tours of America offers free admission during the month of June and free admission the first Sunday of every month to locals with proper ID showing a Keys residence. Visit great places such as The Key West Aquarium, the Conch Train and Shipwreck Museum. But don’t forget to explore such places as Mel Fisher Museum and Lighthouse Museum and give the kids their Key West history lessons

FIVE: WALKABOUT Historic Seaport District Harbor walk: Start at the Ft. Myer’s Ferry terminal and stroll around the Marina looking for tarpon and manatees. Don’t forget to bring quarters to feed the fish (not the coins, silly; it’s to feed the food-dispensers). Follow the boardwalk all the way to Mallory Square and catch the sunset celebration. Best to do late in the day to see the sunset tours set sail past in the harbor.

SIX: MOVIE CLUB Tropic Cinema has a special Kids Movie Club during the summer months. Arrive at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, movies start at 10:30 a.m. Kids 12 and under pay $1 and grownups pay $2 for admission. All ticket sales for Saturday Kids Movie Club benefit kids' nonprofits in Monroe County.

SEVEN: SCIENCE Spend a Saturday morning at The Eco Discovery Center. The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center offers free programs for kids in kindergarten to fifth grade, usually third Saturdays of the month.

EIGHT: DAY TRIPS Take a trip up the Keys for day-visits of Bahia Honda State Park in the Lower Keys; Aquarium Encounters, Dolphin Research Center and Turtle Hospital in Marathon; and Theater By The Sea in Islamorada.

NINE: READ The Key West Library is always quiet, cool, and has the best children’s section with books for all ages and toys for toddlers.

TEN: WATER ACTIVITIES A variety of businesses cater to the needs of young children. Both kayaking and paddle boarding are possible with the kids.

tart the night at the newly reopened Overseas Pub and Grill at MM 49 with the Sandilla Quesadilla, a game of pool and the coldest beer in town – a must see is the frozen drink rail at the bar to keep the cocktails extra cold. The quesadilla is a favorite signature dish made with three cheeses and marinated tomatoes, but the spectacular part is adding the braised pot roast to the deal. Yum! Then mosey over to Castaway Waterfront on 15th Street for dinner. The sushi there is top notch (can we say Two Year Roll, Lisa Roll, and Surf and Turf Roll), and you can’t go wrong with fresh lionfish, crab enchiladas, or the Mary Ann’s Crab Stuffed Filet topped with lobster sauce. There is something for everyone at Castaway.

Then, take a short breather, maybe watch the sunset at Old Seven (since it will be closing July 5 to pedestrians), then grab a seat at Butterfly Café at Tranquility Bay and order the most delicious dessert on the island – The TDF Cake. The “TO DIE FOR” Cake is served with warm toffee sauce, yes warm toffee sauce. And, we heard if you ask very nicely, they will even add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to help out the oh-sodelicious, to die for, topped with warm toffee sauce, cake.

And, if looking for the perfect nightcap, Plaza Grill’s espresso martini will help make the progressive dinner night a memorable one.

hose with the wherewithal (or basic forging ability) to prove they live in Monroe County can join Snapper’s exclusive fun “Turtle Club” and take advantage of discounts on food and drinks all year round. On Thursday nights, card members can get 20 percent off their entire bill. A favorite appetizer is the “smoking” fish spread which arrives at the table in a mason jar that releases a cloud of smoke with the lid is popped. Perched right on the ocean, at MM 94.5, the popular restaurant features three bars, dockage, and live entertainment seven nights a week.

Next, locals who know all about “fresh, local seafood” head over to Lazy Days for an entree done right. Located right next to Bud & Mary’s Marina in Islamorada, Lazy Days offers panoramic views of the Atlantic, a white sandy beach and seafood so fresh and tasty that even the most discerning seafood aficionado will be satisfied.

There are several species available daily prepared a number of ways including the famous “Lazy Days” style. The filet is encrusted with Japanese bread crumbs, sautéed crispy golden and then topped with diced tomato and scallions, sprinkled with parmesan cheese and drizzled with key lime butter. So (expletive deleted) good.

Finish the evening at SubZero Ice Cream and Yogurt in Islamorada. Half the goody is watching the ice cream being created with “magic” — a base of cream (sugar-free and vegan options available) is flash frozen with clouds of nitrogen streaming over the bowls where employees fold the concoction. Then customers choose one of about 20 flavors, and can also add “mix-ins” such as almonds, brownies or rainbow sprinkles. These customizable desserts come in waffle cones and cups. “Our goal is to satisfy our customer and have them taste the sensation and experience the magic,” said Sherry Copper, manager at Sub Zero. Launched in the ’80s, the original design kayak has been out of production for more than a decade. “The original Waverider was known for its comfortable back rest and also its six pack holder,” laughed Mark Golob, marketing director. “When it first came out, it got a lot of praise for its quality and comfortable ride.” The new Waverider features many of the same elements, plus a lighter and more durable construction.

Tiki Water Sport’s fiberglass shop also makes dock boxes and dock accessories. Behind the scenes, the manufacturing side of the house has undergone improvements in techniques and shop equipment. “We’ve installed a larger curing oven. Our new oven is 8 by 12 feet so we’ve gained a lot of capability,” said Golob. “We have also gone greener in our techniques and disposal methods. We try to remain as responsible as we can.”

A large part of the company’s success comes from the experienced staff. “What we’ve done here is crushing the ’80s methods and styles and bringing newer techniques and cleaner methods,” said Johnny Wygle, a 25year fiberglass professional. “Using less resin and a technique called infusion has made all the difference in quality — it’s stronger,” said Wygel. The shop also does powder coating, a long-lasting paint application for metals such as balcony railings Tiki Water Sports Inc. is located at 94381 Overseas Highway in Tavernier.

The company is also in search of brand ambassadors to be featured in their product catalog and magazine features. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.-ish Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and closed Sunday.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION New reef planted off Fort Zach Contributed

S

cientists and volunteers planted 200 live coral fragments recently in the waters off Key West's Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, launching an effort to restore depleted reef tracts and create an educational public snorkel park.

Scientists at Mote Marine Tropical Research Laboratory on Summerland Key "outplanted" corals in 10 to 15 feet of water about 20 feet beyond a breakwater off Fort Taylor's beach.

Striving to restore large areas of major reef-building corals, Mote is employing a revolutionary "re-skinning" technique that enables fragments of brain, star and boulder corals to fuse together rapidly to form new coral heads.

"We start the corals at a very small size, but that stimulates them to grow to about the size of a golf ball in about just three or four months," said Dr. Dave Vaughan, manager of Mote's reef restoration program.

"We then take those and we plant them as singles and in groups of five," he said. "The array of five, in just one or two years, should grow together and form a coral head about the size of a dinner plate or a Frisbee.

"That would have taken 15 to 25 or more years in the wild," Vaughan said.

The project, whose goals include creating a publicly accessible coral restoration area and snorkel park, is a collaborative effort between Mote Marine Laboratory, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and Florida State Parks.

Project organizers are seeking recreational snorkelers and "voluntourists" to assist with upcoming planting sessions.

Vaughn said he hopes to have more than 5,000 corals planted by the end of July.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why?

This year Ms. Sarah Maschal has inspired me to reach for things that are hard but not impossible. She led my relay team to regionals for a second year in a row.

Tourists’ driving habits are a big problem. During season it takes me 15 minutes to get to work and it’s only a seven-mile island!

ELISE: A new transplant to the Keys, Elise is already wise in the ways of the islands. “I feel like the Publix chicken is healthier. But that’s because if I’m eating Dion’s chicken, I know I already made some unhealthy choices that night.”

ans of adventurous living and writing can celebrate the legacy of Ernest Hemingway Tuesday through Sunday, July 19-24. The 36th annual Hemingway Days salutes the vigorous Key West lifestyle and literary mastery of the author who lived and wrote on the island for most of the 1930s.

Festival highlights include a look-alike contest for Hemingway imitators, prose and poetry readings and a three-day marlin tournament that pays tribute to Ernest's passion for deep-sea angling.

Some 125 burly, bearded contestants are expected to compete in the "Papa" Hemingway Look-Alike Contest at Sloppy Joe's Bar, 201 Duval St. Preliminary rounds are set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 21 and 22, with finalists facing off at 6:30 p.m.

aylor Sanderson started making clothes and learning about fashion before her 2010 graduation while attending Key West High School.

“I was into crazy big dresses with trains,” she said. “But, a couple years after graduation, a friend mentioned she liked the idea of custom bathing suits and wondered if I could do it.”

And so Keysneck Swimwear was born. (The brand name is a play on “redneck,” though some locals have those too.)

Sanderson is finishing up college with a visual communication and brand management degree but still makes custom suits. “This brand focuses on active lifestyles,” she said. “I grew up standup jet skiing, and these will stay put.”

She takes into consideration that Keys girls are usually not just laying around on a beach. They are diving and playing beach volleyball, but the suit also works for just lounging at the sandbar, as well.

After her college graduation this December, she plans on adding men’s swimwear into the line. Pieces run about $50. In the meantime, her suits can be found at keysneck.com.

anielle Pierog grew up in the Upper Keys and was always pestering her mother to drive her to Miami to go

shopping.

“There weren’t many options back then as far as boutiques or trendy clothing,” she said. “It’s always been an aspiration of mine to open my own store.” Pierog cemented her dreams by attending school at Parsons School of Design in New York and then The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.

Pierog opened the D-Luxe boutique four years ago. It’s stocked with young-hip-trendy clothing ranging from graphic tees to maxi dresses to rompers. She doesn’t carry well-known brands, preferring to seek out more unique designers from around the country. And all of it — shoes and accessories, too — is priced at less than $50.

Customers are flocking to the bathing suits, though. Those Danielle designs herself. She handpicks the fabric, sketches the look, and then has them sewn up. Each suit is unique.

“We don’t mass produce,” Pierog said. “And most of our suits are reversible, solid color on one side with a coordinating pattern on the other. So it’s like two suits in one.”

t’s possible to spend 24 hours in a bathing suit. In fact, I recommend it. There was a time in my life when vacations didn’t require anything except a suit and a T-shirt if the sunburn got too bad. And a pair of shoes, if you were going to be a wuss about it. In fact, one childhood vacation when I was 8 years old, I didn’t wear anything else. It occurred to me to change into a different bathing suit, but not to put on actual clothes.

(Both brothers motored away from the dock without a gas can, just enough in the lines to put them out of reach, again providing hours of merriment for the rest of us.) All the while, never getting out of my bathing suit.

By early evening, my suit was dry enough to show up for dinner, grudgingly provided by Rusty. (The family threatened dozens of mutinies on this trip, all regarding the food Rusty imprisoned.)

Then a bunk somewhere, on some boat. Then repeat for the next five or six days. I don’t remember anyone telling me to put on pajamas. Or brush my teeth. Or take a shower with fresh water.

There’s outrageous behavior, and outrageous insults, most easily translated to any family situation, Jewish or not. It’s both very, very funny, and on a deeper level, a probing of modern cultural identity.

It’s an unhappy truth, according to playwright Joshua Harmon, and he makes the most of it in his hilarious hit play “Bad Jews,” opening Wednesday, June 29 for a two-week run at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West. The play is the opening mainstage production of this year’s Summer Stage. Curtain is at 8 p.m.

The play stars Jessica Jackson, Kaleb Smith-Wood, Jeremy P. Hyatt, and Lisa Elena Monda — veteran Key West actors recently seen in plays including “Last Night of Ballyhoo” and “The Lion in Winter.” It is helmed by Annie Miners in her directorial debut, and produced by Bob Bowersox for TheatreXP. The title aside, there’s nothing anti-Semitic about the story. While the two main characters – each powerful, opposing, and unyielding to a fault – may be squaring off in a battle over a cherished Jewish family heirloom, broader issues of religious faith, cultural assimilation, and even the validity of one another’s romances are more central to the tale.

The play opens as Daphna Feygenbaum is trying to get her cousin Jonah Haber to take her side in seeking inheritance of a cherished piece of religious jewelry that their justdeceased grandfather managed to keep hidden during the Holocaust. Being the “good Jew” of the play, Daphna feels it is rightfully hers – after all, she’s the keeper of all things Jewish in the family.

Into this cauldron of faith comes Jonah’s brother Liam, the self-avowed “bad Jew” of the family, who lays claim to the piece of jewelry as an engagement gift for his shiksa girlfriend Melody, despite having been skiing in Aspen when their grandfather died.

The play will run Wednesday through Sunday nights through July 10. Tickets are available by calling 302-540-6102.

ight-time Grammy elected and recent Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Australian blues artist Michael Charles will claim the stage at Chicago’s in Key West through Wednesday, June 29.

Charles plays original blues, blues-based rock, inspiring ballads, as well as some well-known covers and, as always, his guitar is the driving force behind his music. His musical pilgrimage started over five decades ago in his birth place Melbourne, Australia. While enjoying a successful musical crusade of touring, recording, and numerous television and radio appearances in his homeland, Michael received an invitation from Buddy Guy’s management to appear at the infamous Legends in Chicago, Illinois. After making America his home, Charles worked the whole Chicago blues circuit performing with Mr. Buddy Guy, Phil Guy, James Cotton, Eddy Clearwater, Junior Wells, George Baze, as well as touring with blues legend, Jimmy Dawkins.

In October of 2015, Michael Charles was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. His discography is comprised of 32 releases including a double CD 30-year anthology released in 2014 and the live CD “Concert at the Nest,” released in the winter of 2015.

he next time you log on to Facebook, take a moment to look for Rolando Rojas, KeyWestGuitarist. You may be lucky enough to catch one of his daily live video broadcast performances. I guarantee you will enjoy it — it is a real musical treat!

For more than 20 years, Rojas has been performing at all the major venues in the Keys, from Little Palm Island to Sloppy Joe’s. Born and raised in Chile, he is the child of a musical family — his home was filled all types of musical instruments. Self taught as a young boy, Rolando learned to play every instrument he could get his hands on, including the charango (a small Andean stringed instrument in the lute family.) When he reached the age of 12, like all kids in Chile, he started playing with the band in school and studied music a bit more formally.

After high school, Rolando moved to Valparaiso, Chile, to attend the Conservatory of Music where he studied piano seriously. Rolando didn’t touch a

guitar again until he was 35 years old.

Rolando emigrated to Cudjoe Key with his family in the early ’90s and in December of ’93 met the members of the Caribe of Key West Band and started playing piano with them. Rolando said he enjoys performing with many different musicians in Key West as well as performing solo. You can find him playing solo guitar at Little Palm Island; at el Meson de Pepe with Caribe of Key West; the Sunset Pier with Claire Finley on Thursday nights at dusk before heading over to Virgilio’s; Sloppy Joe’s on Sundays; and sometimes at Blue Heaven with Yvan Agbo. He also performs at many weddings.

In between gigs, Rolando has also been busy working on a solo CD, recording folk music from South America he describes as “pretty melodies from Argentina and Chile.” Scheduled to perform in the Sunday Ramble next season, Rolando loves his life as a musician in Key West You can find Rolando Rojas on YouTube or go to his website keywestguitarist.com or find him on Facebook under the same name.

Strange gigs that happen only in the Keys

T

here’s no place in the world like the Florida Keys, and there are few better places in which to ply one’s trade if one plays music for a living. An online musicians’ forum I sometimes cruise by recently had an interesting topic: “What’s the weirdest gig you’ve ever played?”

The topic got me thinking about some of the somewhat abnormal musical engagements I’ve performed at throughout the years, and how those gigs would never have happened anywhere else but the Keys.

I’ve played a couple of small boat gigs, which are much more “fun” and “entertaining” than the larger cruise ship gigs. I’ve done a couple of the larger boats, however, and I have to tell you that there’s nothing quite so challenging as trying to perform without falling on a small cruise ship with dysfunctional stabilizers in 30-foot seas.

JOHN Then there’s that unique “only-on-a-cruise” circumstance BARTUS of walking to the midday buffet down halls where the railings are gaily festooned with barf bags. is a City Council Anyway, back to the small boats. It was a beautiful (if hot) clear and calm summer day… I remember there being a lot of Jimmy Buffett songs and copious amounts of cold beer with very little shade and no head onboard (just hang it over the side).

Here in the Keys, there’s every kind of outdoor gig one can imagine.

None, however, compares with the annual Seven Mile Bridge Run. For those unfamiliar with this annual ritual, perhaps an explanation is in order.

One Saturday morning each April, they actually close down the Seven Mile Bridge for an internationally famous running event. I have performed at this event each year for at least the past 25 years. The stage is a flatbed trailer, which is parked in front of a gift shop inside a railroad car adjacent to a campground. So far, not so strange, right?

Well, I have to arrive at the gig at 5:30 a.m. to be able to access the staging area before the road is shut down — and it’s really not easy to wake up at that ungodly hour after a Friday night gig. The performance time is usually from 9 to 10:30 a.m. as the runners return from their seven-mile journey. There are usually more than 2,000 runners, friends, and volunteers in attendance, as well as a fully stocked beer truck. That’s right, there’s nothing like sharing a springtime Saturday morning with all those healthy runners guzzling low-carb Michelob Ultra not long past sunrise.

Though they may be sweltering and sweaty, musical gigs in the Keys are rarely boring. And if I ever start thinking about how routine things may seem, I just remember that early Saturday morning every April, and how it really gives that old adage a special new meaning: Beer — it’s not just for breakfast anymore!

Cornhole Champions Play at the park raises funds for Habitat

M

arathon is quickly becoming the Cornhole Capital of the Florida Keys. A recent tournament to benefit Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys saw 20 teams of two compete for top honors at the Marathon Community Park. It raised $1,200 to help fund the goal of finishing for new homes this year.

“Everybody wants to do it again,” said Christine Todd-Young, executive director of the local Habitat chapter. “It was absolutely a fabulous time.”

In addition to the play, the event featured music, food and plenty of spectators. The tournament was put together by Capt.

Bill Alch (King of Cornhole), Jessica and Nick Basso.

The first place winners — Greg and Mike — took home the “gold” coconut, a family pass to the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters and a gift certificate to Burdines. The second place winners — Fire Chief John Johnson and son Matthew — received the “silver” coconut, plus two Snuba trips from Tilden’s and a free pass to tour Pigeon Key. (“I hate to say this, but it was the first time I ever played,” Johnson said.)

BRIEFLY Three ways to help clean up the ocean

Special Olympians compete on June 25

A “Get into your Sanctuary” cleanup is scheduled on Saturday, June 25 starting at 7:30 a.m. from Capt.

Hook’s Marina in Marathon. Teams will include scuba, shoreline, and kayak. All cleanup equipment will be provided and the events are free, but diving equipment would need to be brought or rented. The scuba event will remove debris from several reefs within a three-hour period. The shoreline cleanup will work Coco Plum Beach, and the kayak crew will get debris from a mangrove forest by Tarpon Creek Marina. Afterwards, a cookout is planned.

Donations can be made to the sanctuary at the event. For more information, call 305-743-2444.

In 2013, Florida became the first state to offer Standup Paddleboard (SUP) in Special Olympics thanks to the dedication of Ruth Holland, head coordinator for the Special Olympics Florida Monroe County. The program has three teams that provide inclusion for all eligible athletes who live in Key Largo to Key West: the Key West Conchs, the Middle Keys Dolphins, and the Upper Keys Manatees. These exceptional individuals have been training rigorously with their coaches and volunteers for the upcoming Area 11 games. On June 25, Special Olympics Florida athletes from Monroe and Miami-Dade counties will be competing in Area Games at Marker 88 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The results will qualify them for the State Stand Up Paddleboard games in September at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. The public is invited to come cheer them on and discover what Special Olympics SUP is all about.
