The nation’s birthday is upon us, the grandest celebration of the year replete with fireworks and apple pie. Since we are in the middle of our national political season we hear the word, “American” being used a lot — as in “That’s the American Way” or “That’s Un-American.” There seems to be a variety of definitions and translations, so we asked locals …

t started last summer during the drought and was only exacerbated by the continued blockage of freshwater flowing southward through the Everglades. A large section of seagrass (between 30,000 and 50,0000 acres) has died off in the Florida Bay, and things could be getting worse. “The expansion of algae overgrowth needs to be stopped,” says Steve Davis, staff ecologist with the Everglades Foundation. On a recent tour of Florida Bay, and its affected basins, the Weekly observed firsthand the effects of the recent algae bloom prior to a public meeting on June 21 on the issue. Members of The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, South Florida Water Management District, the Florida House of Representatives, the Everglades Foundation, local officials, and Florida Bay Forever (a Monroe County based conservation group) were present to learn and discuss solutions. The hypersalinity in the Florida Bay is a result of fresh water not being able to flow south through the Everglades. But the problem actually originates further north: dating back to the 1940s, a system of levees, dykes, and waterways have been constructed to redirect the overflowing waters of Lake Okeechobee’s south end for agricultural and construction projects. The draining of the Everglades started then and has continued, the only change being Floridians’ regained appreciation for our unique ecosystem.
Florida Bay is irrigated naturally by fresh water through two primary locations: Taylor slough and Shark River slough. Shark River slough has more volume, and dischargers into the western basin. The eastern basin, home to various mangrove regions, has seen a third of its usual freshwater flow, resulting in stagnant and salty water. “The die off originally began north of Whipray basin, but in the last two months has extended south,” says Xavier Figueredo, local captain and cofounder of Florida Bay Forever. The result has been what experts are calling a “near catastrophic” seagrass die off, with the Rankin basin being the epicenter. Since the passing of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan of 2000, which allocated
The hypersalinity problem in Rankin Basin is critical. How bad is it? Steve Davis, wetland ecologist, recently tested the water and discovered the levels were at 83 parts part thousand. To compare, he said, “Going back to the ’40s we don’t have records of salinity above 70 to 80 parts per thousands. So, in that regard, it’s a record. But then when we look at the paleo-record and try to piece together what salinity was like in the natural pre-drainage Florida Bay, it was nowhere near that level of hyper-salinity.”
more than $8 billion to restoring the Everglades, less than a third of the 68 scheduled projects have been completed, according to Florida Bay Forever. “Right now there’s is a lot of attention, effort, and energy surrounding water storage, flow, and Lake Okeechobee. From my perspective, continuing the bridging of Tamiami Trail (US 41) is important and finishing the projects we’ve started,” said state Rep. Holly Raschein. “In the words of [Florida Commissioner of Agriculture] Adam Putnam, we need to have more ribbon cuttings and less ground breakings.” The Army Corps of Engineers have finished construction on one of five bridges on the Tamiami Trail designed to increase the flow of freshwater, and say the second bridge will be completed in three years. “The passing of the Florida Legacy Act during the last session was a step in the right direction,” said Raschein. “Over the next 10 years it devotes a minimum of $200 million just for Everglades restoration. It has goals in water management and land acquisition, all of which work towards the number one goal — restoration.” There are things we can be doing right now to help the problem, however, says Bill Horn, former assistant secretary of the federal Fish and Wildlife (Department of Interior), and board member of Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. He said if the government is willing to relax the phosphorus standards, water flow from Lake Okeechobee could increase, thus helping salinity levels in the Everglades and also the Keys backcountry. “One thing we can do short term is build more STAs (Stormwater Treatments Areas). They take water, store it, and work like sponges and get rid of the high levels of phosphorus. Water in Lake Okeechobee is loaded with phosphorus, causing the levels to be roughly 100 parts per billion. To be able to move that water south, it needs to be brought down to 10 parts per billion. With that being said, if the state and federal government agreed to lower the standard, knowing it might have some adverse effects on Conservation area 1, I believe they could get some water down there to avoid the looming catastrophe.”

“HELP YOUR BODY HEAL ITSELF!” Silver Airlines, which already services Key West International Airport, has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation for a Key West to Havana, Cuba route.
Customs OKs more passengers on Key West-Cuba flights Contributed
U
.S. Customs and Border Protection approved Key West International Airport’s request to support increased scheduled air service between Key West and Havana, Cuba, a route applied for by Silver Airlines. In the June letter the CBP approved up to 20 passengers per flight, doubling the previous capacity that has been allowed since 2011. “We are hopeful that Silver Airlines will be granted the Key West to Havana route and we made this request in preparation for that possibility,” said Donald DeGraw, director of Airports for Monroe County. “This increase would greatly increase Silver’s ability to be successful in the route.” Fort Lauderdale-based Silver Airlines operates 34-seat Saab 340B turboprops. It was one of six airlines that won permission June 10 from the U.S. Department of Transportation to fly commercial air service from the United States to Cuba, the first time this has been allowed in five decades. But the DOT has yet to award the 20 permitted daily flights to Havana, the most sought after Cuba destination for U.S. airlines. The CBP allowed Key West the increased capacity of arriving flights from Havana with operation restrictions. They are: one flight per day, flight days on Monday through Friday, arrival time between 2 and 3 p.m., no cargo and no Sunday flights. Any proposed scheduled flights that are not in accordance with the restrictions must be pre-approved
by CBP and operate with a limit of 10 passengers per aircraft, unless otherwise approved by CBP. This includes possible Saturday flights. Key West International Airport currently is in the second phase of a four-phase project to upgrade the Customs and Border Protection facility. Phase 1 was a $306,000 upgrade to the entrance, bringing it into compliance with CBP standards. Now, a $1.3 million, 2,000 square-foot addition is being built that will be used for arrival passengers to line up for processing. Phases 3 and 4 will involve renovating the existing facility into CBP compliance to allow for up to 70 passengers per hour to be processed. “We hope that once our entire facility is upgraded to CBP standards, all restrictions will be lifted and there will be no passenger constraints for Silver,” DeGraw said. “But that is a few years away.” There currently is no scheduled Air Carrier service from Key West to Cuba. However, since March 2015, Air Key West has been operating charter flights three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to Cuba on its 10-seat (pilot and nine passengers) turboprop Islander operating from the Signature Flight Support general aviation facility . From May 1 until June 21 of this year, Customs has processed 33 charters and 66 private aircraft. That is more than double the 19 charters and 30 private aircraft that were processed during the same time period of 2015. “This jump was mostly due to arrivals from Cuba,” DeGraw said.

PICNIC FOR A CAUSE The annual Fourth of July picnic hosted by VNA Hospice requires an army of volunteers.

Annual Fourth of July event benefits VNA Hospice
A
t this time of year, many of us are reminded of the value of the VNA Hospice presence in our community. For 32 years, the annual Casa Marina July 4th picnic provides for approximately 30 percent of the annual $150,000 needed for Hospice’s unfunded and underfunded services. With Medicare reimbursements recently reduced by federal budget cuts, now more than ever, fundraising and events such as the annual picnic are vital to Hospice. “Our staff helps our patients and their families through their darkest hours. Hospice helps people and provides education, help with social services and endof-life planning, spiritual care, and medical needs that arise during this time. We are a 24-7-365 agency,” said Michelle Chennault of VNA Hospice. Hospice began in the Keys during the AIDS crisis in the ’80s. While
waiting for funding and licensure, Liz Kern, CEO of VNA Hospice recalled, “It was just a volunteer organization so we looked for a way to raise money during the summer months; no other organization had anything planned for the Fourth of July.” The event now is a community collaboration and tradition. It is an “all-American picnic” with raffles, games, music and a front row seat to the fireworks. This year, the Key West High School Marching Band will run a popcorn stand and Family Fun Zone to raise money for new uniforms. Key West Parrothead’s will run the largest silent auction in Key West. And Skipper Kriptiz has lined up Commissioner Lopez and Family Motown Soul Revue with special guests — The American Bombshell's featuring Key West local Stephanie Leone. Over the years, Hospice has helped more than 5,000 families in the Florida Keys, and 1,000 in the past year alone. It is operated by 69 employees and 25 volunteers, who give care to our community when needed most. “We are all touched by death at some point. Our fundraising events not only raise money, but open doors for those hard conversations and lets people know they are not alone,” said Chennault.
Big Pine has its own fireworks show Sunday Big Pine Community Park, 31009 Atlantis Drive, is the happening spot for the Big Pine & Lower Keys Rotary Club's annual fireworks set to take place Sunday, July 3. Key West Rotary gives Key West 40 years of fireworks
S
ince 1976, Key West has been privileged to enjoy a dazzling fireworks display provided by the Key West Rotary Club. During the County's Bicentennial Celebration in 1975, it was decided that although Key West was small, it should still celebrate the Fourth of July the same as the rest of America. Rotary took on the task and each year the organization dedicates time, energy and resources to raising the funds. Faced with the rising costs of the fireworks, permitting, and general overhead to run the show, Rotary spends most of the year beforehand fundraising. This year alone will require a grand total of $50,000 to put on a 30-minute display of pyrotechnics. “Most of the money comes from the generosity of the citizens and businesses of Key West. Each year the Rotary Club reaches out to the community and, like most events in town, the community steps up and donates money. We have received donations from $1 up to $5,000,” said Rotary President David Van Loon. KW Rotary has always been about service to the community and this particular event, Van loon said, “Reminds us of our patriotism and love of country and of all the brave men and women who sacrifice to maintain our freedom.” Originally the fireworks were handled by trained Rotarians — Pete Smith and Karen Thurmon. But as the task and demand grew in the past few years, the company Pyrotecnico from Pennsylvania took over. Show producer Samantha Goldston from Pyrotecnico said, “We start planning for the show in November and have a team of 12 to 15 people working on the display from pulling permits to loading firework magazines. Our goal is to produce a Fourth of July display that will ‘wow’ Key West.” Of course, the show’s duration and element of impressiveness is determined by how much KW Rotary has to spend. The club is still accepting (gladly!) last-minute donations at www.keywestrotary.com. There is no rain date, so don’t miss the show!

ick Kilgos wears many hats: impressive drummer, tapas chef at Louie’s Backyard, spicy magic bean maker… While hanging out at the old Full Moon Saloon on Simonton Street, which closed around 1992, Mick and his bartender friend Dennis Walley used to chat beans; magic green beans that could instantly make a delicious martini even more impressive. When the bar closed, Dennis told Mick to keep the beans around, and Caribe Beans was born. “The beans have a life of their own now,” said Kilgos. The beans make the perfect companion to drinks, specifically a Bloody Mary, and are sometimes even eaten as appetizers around town. A green bean, blanched and ice bathed and soaked in a secret recipe (or dilled), becomes a “spicy dill bean.” “The recipe has stayed the same throughout the years,” said Kilgos. “Consistency is key.” In the 2000s, Kilgos owned Caribbean Deli where he started producing the ultimate drink garnish. When his drumming took him traveling, he sold the deli, but kept making the beans. Mick Kilgos The beans are found throughout the island at more than 30 restaurants and shops, like Green Parrot, Hogs Breath, and the Conch Flyer. Peppers of Key West ships them worldwide. “The beans have a lot of crunch and are never soggy,” he said. “They can also be used as little swizzle sticks in the drinks.” He added that bartenders tell him that people always ask for more, they’re that good. In between touring with the Sauce Boss and other bands, Kilgos has called Key West home for the past 28 years. At home, he can be seen behind the drums about four nights a week with Bill Blue, Ericson Holt, and Barry Cuda. While listening to Bill Blue and the Nervous Guys at The Pier House, Scott Barry pointed out the drummer as the special bean maker. “They are unique in the sense that they have a purpose and taste good, and work in multitude of different drinks,” he said. To buy Caribe Beans, visit any of the shops that sell them in town. The full list is at caribebeans.com. Dilly beans or pickled green beans, are a means of preserving this summer legume. Often flavored with dill, hence the name, they may also contain garlic, Tabasco sauce, and red pepper. — Wikipedia

WEEKLY INTERVIEW
KEY WEST WEEKLY / JULY 00, 2016 HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
ianna Sutton, at the helm of the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, has helped raise more than $21 million dollars for nonprofit programs throughout the Keys. The journey toward such a lifetime accomplishment was a winding road with a singular destiny, Key West. Born in Florida, Sutton studied and worked as an artist in Boulder, Colorado (she lived on the same street as Mork and Mindy). Falling into “arts management” easily lead to nonprofit fundraising, and eventually Sutton earned a masters in communication from University of Northern Colorado and a national fundraising executive certification. After 28 years in Colorado, a friend saw the CFFK job listing and said that sounded like Sutton, and she wrote a cover letter to CFFK saying, “I hear you are looking for someone like me” … and they were. She headed back to her native Florida with her only daughter, and said of living here, “The visual beauty of the Keys infuses the artist within me and it’s close to family and friends. I’m also attracted to the generous giving spirit, and I feel blessed to be a part of that in my work.” In addition to serving as President and CEO of CFFK for the past 12 years, Sutton is a Leadership Monroe County alum, City of Key West Ambassador, and volunteer for many AIDS Help events such as the Taste of Key West, the SMART Ride, and King and Queen of Fantasy Fest. Her gracious nature has made her work her passion.

Community Foundation hands out $62,000
C
elebrating its 20th anniversary, the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys will be giving out a total of $180,000 in Vision 20/20 grants in 2016. On June 19, the second round of grants was handed out for Arts and Cultures Initiatives and 14 organizations divvied up a grand total of $62,000 in funding. From Key Largo to Key West nonprofit programs had to meet three criteria for grants: projects that were innovative, had substantial impact on the community and encourage collaboration among community organizations. The funds came from the Legacy Donors of the CFFK foundation and as, Dianna Sutton, President of CFFK, said, “It is so their love of art and culture can carry on in the Keys.” The party was hosted by Nance Frank at her art gallery, Gallery on Greene and a Legacy donor. —Weekly Staff report

KWHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK
KEY WEST WEEKLY / JULY 00, 2016 Faculty and students at Key West High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Weekly Newspapers. What sport(s) do you play at Key West High School? Swimming and track. Who has inspired you to be a better athlete? Definitely my grandfather. He used to be a high school swim coach so he helps me with technique and pushes me to do better. Also, T.J. Carbone, he has set an example of what a wellrounded student athlete should be.
Do you have a sports moment, or sports achievement, of which you are particularly proud? My record from the 100 butterfly, it is also the event which I have seemed to rank best at and it was one of the oldest standing records at KWHS. How do you balance sports and study? I have good time management. I make sure my school work is complete before I take on other activities. What are your plans after high school? I am hoping to swim at the college level, preferably in Florida, and study marine science and environmental conservation. Do you think you will continue to play sports as an adult? Why or why not? Yes, it supports an active lifestyle — staying fit while getting involved with the community. Finish this sentence: Playing sports has taught me… … dedication to whatever task I have at hand and to push myself in all aspects of life to my full potential.

eople used to flock to Kelly’s restaurant to get a glimpse of famed actress and restauranteur Kelly McGillis. Kelly, who still has ties to the namesake establishment has moved on, as has the restaurant’s “place” in the city’s culinary world. Now, Kelly’s is less of a gawker tourist attraction, and more of dedicated, long-standing restaurant aimed at serving good food in a good setting. Still family-owned since 1992, long time employee and now general manager Chuck Bryant would like locals to revisit Kelly’s and get to know it all over again. It’s definitely worth the trip. “We are all about the food. Look at me?!” Bryant laughed and pointed to his belly. “We make everything from scratch.” Their dedication shows with a vast menu that offers Caribbean/ Key West fare with a variety of vegetarian and diet restricted opKelly’s Caribbean Bar, tions. A man of music: Ben Solove
I
By James Whitehead
n a town where live music can be found on every corner, at all hours of the day, there is one man who somehow always finds his way in to each and every venue, each and every day, helping to support the local music scene and the musicians who call Key West home. That is Ben Solove. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Ben was brought up surrounded by music. His father was an avid music fan, so much so that he named their three cats Pearl, Joplin and McGee. Ben received a dual-cassette “ boom box” recorder at an early age and soon began recording clips of his favorite radio station, QFM 96.3, featuring local DJ Daddy Wags. His love for music grew deeper and he began collecting albums, tapes
and eventually CD’s of all his favorite bands, The Police being his favorite. Ben soon discovered the Grateful Dead and that was a “game changer.” Spending several summers following the Dead, Solove truly began seeing music as something more than just pleasure or entertainment, it became a “ salvation, something more spiritual.” In 2010, Ben moved to Key West with his then girlfriend and quickly saw the thriving music scene as a great opportunity to immerse himself in what he loves most. He was hired by 104.9 The X FM to host the Happy Hour show from 4-7, Wednesday through Saturday. Solove also produces and hosts two other weekly shows, his “ Live and Dead Show” featuring all live music with a heavy dose of Grateful Dead, and his “Blues Day Tuesday Show” featuring both old and contemporary blues tracks from all sorts of artists. On top of all this, Solove also started his own promotion company, Second to None Promotions, putting on small concerts and events throughout town. Despite his crazy schedule, Ben is constantly making the rounds here in town supporting all the local musicians and doing everything he can to help continue to allow Key West to thrive musically. He created the website “ Who and Where In Key West” which provides a daily updated live music schedule here on the island and he is also a constant supporter of the Sunday Ramble concert series.

Her sister Merri also moved down six years ago and works at the beach bar. “You can’t beat the view here,” she said overlooking the boat traffic during an afternoon fundraiser for Orlando’s Pulse nightclub on Thursday. When she isn’t working, she is still trying to be anywhere near, on, or in the water. She said to try out the hogfish tacos when visiting the bar. “They are so good,” she said, adding, “but, you probably can’t do both the colada and the hogfish tacos, you’d be too stuffed.” The Pier House is located at 1 Duval St., Key West.

A ‘FAMILIAR’ COMEDY
‘Bad Jews’ keeps theater alive during summer months
W
ho doesn’t love a sharp, smart family dramedy? Now playing at the Red Barn Theater, “Bad Jews” is a sinisterly quickwitted play that is the intellectual antidote to the summer blockbusters. It delves in to the heart of family dynamics, regardless of your particular religion, that will leave you nodding in agreement, unable to pick a side and re-thinking your stance on the importance of heritage and love. The play is part of Theatre XP’s Key West Summer Stage, an annual effort to make sure the islands don’t go into complete theater withdrawal during the “off” season. This show is staged at the Red Barn Theatre on Duval Street in Key West. Joshua Harmon’s play is set in a New York City apartment, where three Jewish cousins and one shiksa girlfriend have come together for the funeral of their grandfather. When their holocaust-surviving Poppy’s Chai necklace is up for grabs, they quickly become caught in a contentious dialogue about their pasts, their culture and relationships. Jessica Jackson who plays Daphna Feygenbam, the acerbic, unyielding devout “Good Jew” delivers a hefty and polished performance. Jackson tackles the monologues with acute comedic timing and rapid-fire delivery as she draws the battle lines with her cousin and nemesis, Liam the “Bad Jew” played by Kaleb SmithWood. Smith-Wood provides the equally caustic and humorous counterpart, replete with perfectly executed physically comedy.
Jessica Jackson and Kaleb SmithWood lead an all-star cast in ‘Bad Jews,’ the opening show of Summer Stage 2016.
Jeremy P. Hyatt plays the neutral, lovable Jonah caught in the middle of his brother and cousin with ease. And Lisa Elena Monda's performance as Melody, Liam’s shiksa’s girlfriend, adds the remedy and sweet countermeasure to the family’s animosity. Known local actress and stage manager, Annie Miners, is making her directorial debut that is worthy of applause. “Bad Jews” in energetic and engaging, intelligent and funny, and not to be missed. The play runs Wednesday to Sunday through July 10 at The Red Barn Theater. For tickets, call 305-540-6102. Also look forward to Theater Xp’s production of Pulitzer Prize winning “Water by the Spoonful” running July 20-31.

SALT GALLERY Saturday, July 2 Photos by Nancy Spiewak
Local photographer Larry Blackburn will be among the local artists featuring his work during the monthly “First Friday Upper Duval Art Stroll.” Patrons are invited to stroll the quiet end of the famous Key West street, poking their heads into shops and wine bars from United to Truman streets. Local proprietors and artists plan special receptions and exhibitions.
Nancy Spiewak’s newest photography exhibit opens at SALT Gallery in Key West this weekend. The show, “Botanicals,” features more than a dozen untitled archival pigment prints printed on cotton rag paper, professionally matted and framed. The former Keys resident said, “When I came back after a long absence, I began to notice things I had taken for granted or overlooked while living in the Keys.
WHAT’S COMING
LOOE KEY Saturday, July 9 Underwater Music Fest
CUSTOM HOUSE MUSEUM Thursday, July 14 @ 6 p.m. Film ‘Stardust Stricken’
The 32nd annual Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — a melodic experience that spotlights coral reef protection and environmentally responsible diving approximately six miles south of Big Pine Key. Participants swim among Looe Key's vivid marine life and coral formations while listening to music broadcast by US1 Radio 104.1 FM. on speakers suspended beneath boats above the reef.
Part of the Key West Art and Historical Society’s film series, “Stardust Stricken” highlights the path of an Iranian director: the poor Tehrani neighborhood where he was born, the clandestine places his political guerrilla group met, and the spot where he was shot and arrested. The Iranian film in Farsi with English subtitles documents the places and events that shaped the filmmaker.

Thank You Key West for nominating me as a finalist for Best Elected Official. It is a honor to serve the people of this great city. - Key West Mayor Craig Cates Vote Today: www.keysweekly.com
Pier dedication Ninety-nine year old philanthropist Ed Knight did the honors this week, unveiling the plaque renaming the White Street Pier in his honor. The pier will henceforth be known as the Edward B. Knight Pier. In recognition of nearly a century of service to the citizens of Key West, the City Commission dedicated the landmark “as a reminder of the overwhelming kindness, philanthropic support, and act of generosity bestowed upon the city and citizens of Key West,” reads the plaque. Mayor Craig Cates, the entire City Commission, and a who’s who of Key Westers and longtime friends of Mr. Knight turned out to show their appreciation.

Comic Relief Three films bust the mold
Summer Chamber Series Finale
F
or most in the Keys, a trip to the movie theater still functions as a permissible, and enjoyable, “mainland-esque” escape during the summer months. However, the recent epidemic of comic book based films (from both Marvel and DC Comics) has dominated Hollywood budgets over the past several years — seemingly redefining a new generation of “Summer Blockbusters.” To be fair, I am not totally immune to the comic BRITT brand. As bawdy as it was, Deadpool offered a reMYERS freshing twist to an otherwise contrived genre, while traded in a life of the brilliance of Christian Bale and Robert Downey Jr. monetary success, pioneered credibility to the superhero fad. However, a chiseled body the recent pandemic of comic spinoffs, remakes and and intellectual enlightenment for offshoots has seemingly left movie fans with less apa piece of the pie peal than November’s presidential ballot. of the Keys Weekly For those who are counting, over the past several newspapers. He years we’ve now endured three separate versions of is also the proud Superman, three Spider-(Men), two separate accounts parent of an of the Fantastic Four, several Incredible Hulks, two incredible fouryear-old and a Caped Crusaders, an Ant Man and dozens of spinoffs sucker for Michael ranging from the X-Men, the Avengers and now the Mann movies and Justice League. In fact, it won’t be long until Batman’s convenience store butler receives his own feature film. (Let the Marvel hot dogs. and DC Comics bidding battle commence for “Alfred Beginnings”.) Once again, much of Hollywood’s 2016 summertime promotional dollars will be dumped into the mass appeal of comic snoozers, leaving moderate expectations with fans searching for alternatives to Will Smith branding a leotard. However, in the coming weeks three appealing options will quietly hit the silver screen. Let’s just call it “comic book relief” to an industry starved of originality.
Meet the Trio from the award-winning Excelsa Quartet. Back by popular demand, these First Prize winners of "The Provincie Limburg Prijs" along with the “EMCY Artprize” at the Charles Hennen 26th International Chamber Music Competition for Strings in The Netherlands will captivate you with exceptional selections from the classical repertoire.

Indignation / Rated R / Release Date July 29 Although the film has the potential to be interminable, anyone who has seen Logan Lerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and “Fury”) recognizes a blossoming actor who maintains the charisma and talent to carry the workload of a script. The story follows Marcus, a young Jewish student, who escapes his family life in New Jersey by attending college in Ohio. The plot explores the boundaries of sexual repression, religious sovereignty and cultural isolation in America during the Korean War. Captain Fantastic / Rated R / Release Date July 8 If Viggo Mortensen played a blade of grass, he would still be entertaining, so Captain Fantastic should be an easy sell. In this drama, Mortensen plays a father of six kids who is forced to leave the comforts of the Pacific Northwest for the real world — challenging the ideals of fatherhood. The Infiltrator / Rated R / Release Date July 13 Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) depicts the true story of Robert Mazur, a customs agent, tasked with infiltrating a moneylaundering scheme connected to the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar. Cranston is joined by John Leguizamo and Diane Kruger in a film that smells like Oscar.

Fine Reading This July 4th get hip with the latest trend in patriotic biographies. Read “Alexander Hamilton,“ by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Chernow. Wireless Garden Gnome Speaker. Celebrate your “Euro Kitsch” and scare away your iguanas with the classic garden gnome. With hidden Bluetooth speaker, this cute little guy can sync up with your device up to 60 feet away. The rechargeable battery provides up to four hours of musical “magic” from a four-hour charge via the included USB cable. Crafted from water-resistant polyresin, it stands about a foot tall. $60 @ Hammacher Schlemmer catalogue
Inflatable Sofa Beds The videos of this product are nothing short of amazing. It doesn’t require dizzying minutes applying one’s mouth to an insufferable nozzle.
