LOCAL CHATTER By Hays Blinckmann Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year that we can tackle the age old question, what do women really want? Is it chocolates and roses? Expensive dinner dates or Netflix in bed? Maybe it’s something more, but then again, maybe it’s something less. So we asked women …

What do you really, really want for Valentine’s Day?

Signs of a heart attack are rarely this obvious.

“I would burn down Hallmark and then send them a condolence card.” Aubrey Otten speaks for the masses who want to take down the corporate-driven holiday.

“I just want a big, fudgy brownie,” said Kristen Blanchard. She wants to keep it simple and sweet, literally.

“What I really want is to actually know what I really want on Valentine’s Day.” Alexa Nevenfeldt voiced what women rarely say out loud… ssshhh.

During a heart attack, every minute matters. So, know the warning signs. If you experience them, call 911 and get to the nearest emergency room. And know that Lower Keys Medical Center is here to help

“I just want to lick your face,” said Pepper, an associate at Firefly.

when you need us.

Sandy West wants, “The RIGHT partner.” Put that on a candy heart.

County approves zoning changes for Lower Keys Contributed

T

he Monroe County Board of County Commissioners voted 5-0 to approve future land use and zoning changes to two parcels of land owned by Rockland Operations on Big Coppitt and Rockland keys for a much-needed affordable/workforce housing project at the Wednesday monthly meeting at the Harvey Government Center in Key West. The Board approved changing the zoning from Industrial (I) and Commercial Fishing Area (CFA) to Mixed Use (MU) with limitations on a 14.8-acre parcel on Big Coppitt Key, where the proposed project would be built. The Board also approved changing the zoning from Industrial (I) to Commercial 2 (C2) on the parcel on Rockland Key, where no residential housing would be allowed. The Board voted to approve

the future land use and zoning changes on the proposed residential development project with the criteria that only affordable housing can be built on the site, and that the mix must be at least 20 percent of low and very low housing combined, at least 10 percent median housing and the rest moderate housing. The proposed project would allow for a maximum of 212 units, making the break down about 42 units (very low and low combined), 21 median and 149 moderate. The Commissioners acknowledged the concerns of residents who live near the proposed development about increased traffic and a change of their neighborhood’s character, but voted to allow the zoning changes due to the undeniable need of affordable/workforce housing in the County. The County has 710 affordable Rate of Growth Ordinance units remaining, but they have

not been used in recent years due to the high cost of land in the Keys that makes affordable housing projects cost prohibitive. This proposed project is in the hands of developers who already own the land and are using commercial funding. To advance the project, Rockland Operations must next propose a development agreement that is consistent with the

County’s Comprehensive Plan and County Code, as well as the criteria adopted at Wednesday’s BOCC meeting. The developers also will have to receive approval down the line from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the BOCC again and other entities, as well as go through the building permitting process, before they could ever break ground.

Keys receive $3 million for wastewater By Jason Koler

T

his past Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers announced it would provide $3 million in funding towards the Florida Keys Water Quality Improvement Program (FKWQIP). This announcement comes less than two months after Rep. Curbelo (FL-26) signed a bi-partisan letter addressed to Assistant Secretary Darcy, urging her to give full and fair consideration to this critical project that directly benefits the Florida Keys. Last month, a contingent consisting of Key Largo Wastewater District Chairman Robby Majeska, Marathon Vice Mayor Bill Kelly and Islamorada Mayor Deb Gillis traveled to Washington to lobby on behalf of the grant. “My freezing in Washington D.C. last month paid off,” Gillis announced on her Facebook page. “This money goes for water quality projects such as sewers. Islamorada will receive

$1.5 million of this money.” Key Largo and Marathon will receive $749,000 each to complete improvements. Both Key Largo and Marathon completed their systems in 2010. Islamorada was granted a five-year extension and concluded work this past December. “Our Congressman Curbelo deserves the credit for this victory,” said Marathon Vice Mayor Bill Kelly. “He told us whatever we needed he would help us get it done.” In his November letter, Curbelo referred to the Keys as a “national treasure” and for water treatment standards that are four times more stringent than most other parts of the nation. The Florida Keys Water Quality Improvement Act was passed by Congress in 2000. It approved spending up to $100 million of federal dollars on wastewater funding.

School official expects action on HOB theft By John Dick

he Monroe County School District will soon be presenting a report on the missing Horace O’Bryant (HOB) daycare funds, which have now been calculated to be $21,731.51. When the State Attorney’s office has completed its investigation, we will receive the school district’s internal report on the who, what, and why it happened — including Superintendent Mark Porter’s discipline recommendations for those involved. I expect these reports at our upcoming meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Disciplining employees is solely the responsibility of the Superintendent. He can opt for light or severe consequences and he is not obligated to make it public. He does not have to come before the board for a vote. However, in light of our past scandal and the current media attention given to this

matter, it would be political suicide for him to hide this from the public. I was on the School Board when we had a major scandal a few years ago, and I was extremely unhappy with the consequences brought forth by the superintendent serving at the time. Former Superintendent Burke’s sanctions were tantamount to “a slap on the wrist.” I felt the discipline recommendations were too light given the gravity of the situation and therefore, I voted no. The board majority, unfortunately, voted to accept the “slap on the wrist” recommendations. Superintendent Burke based his discipline recommendations on a forensic report that was created by a Miami accounting firm as well as input from a Tampa law firm.

Both firms were hired by the School Board to investigate the theft. The cost for these investigations amounted to more than $300,000. I was amazed to see a call to bring in both of these same firms to investigate the current misappropriation of funds. This current situation is confined to one program in one school and is not going to expand into numerous departments as the last situation did. In our current situation, the State Attorney’s office will investigate this matter thoroughly for any criminal aspect. Our attorneys will investigate to identify those who failed in their duties but are not guilty of criminal offenses. This can and will be done at a minimal cost to the district. In my opinion, common sense should dictate that anyone guilty of stealing would be fired immediately. Also, if there is evidence that would lead to a reasonable expectation of a guilty verdict in a court of law, then those persons should be prosecuted. Those that for whatever reason declined to perform their assigned tasks or provide proper oversight of the program should face consequences appropriate to their failure and dereliction of duty. In the previous scandal, our past Superintendent, Joseph Burke recommended 10-day suspensions and a slight drop in salary for a few administrators and no consequences at all for several others. Bear in mind that the previous scandal had documented more than $400,000 in theft and had many more cases of apparent theft but lacked the evidence to prove it. This would have brought the total to well over $1 million. If we hired the same investigators as in the past, with our current $20,000 loss, I wonder what trivial reprimands would have been recommended. Thankfully this current board has voted to not bring back the same firms. We did so at an open board meeting explaining our reasons, namely cost and past results. Yet, surprisingly we still have a small group clamoring for their return. While they aggressively and continuously continued on page 14

his past weekend, Key Westers and tourists alike plunged themselves into the notso-icy waters at Higgs Beach. (Ironically, on one of the coldest days of the year.) The benefit raises money for Samuel’s House who provide aid and help for homeless women, single mothers and fathers, and intact families. The sun poked through as roughly a hundred or so people laughed and swam — if briefly — for the cause. — Weekly Staff report

She’s on her way to her goal: raise $10,000 for Samuel’s House. 2. Jo and Helena Reddick with friends, Carolyn and Dennis Perkins, come representing Boyd’s campground and ready to swim. 4. Needed: Retreat houses for survivors Little Pink Houses of Hope planning fourth annual retreat By Kristen Livengood

F

or some families in the Little Pink Houses of Hope program, this may be the last time they will all be together as a family; for some, their last vacation together at all. Little Pink Houses of Hope brings together breast cancer survivors and patients who have doctor’s clearance to come for a weeklong vacation to Key West. Last year, eight homes were donated for a June 19 retreat to the Southernmost City. “We are looking for anything — conch shack, condo, or house,” said Key West coordinator Amy Gage, who has three houses lined up and needs at least three more to make the program happen this summer. Gage has nine families lined up, if six more houses come available. The program gives the woman fighting breast cancer and her family a no-worries vacation to Key West. “The only expense to the family is transportation,” said Gage, who with her team of local volunteers stock homes with food and helps arrange lunches and dinners for the families. The volunteers act as concierges, helping the families plan excursions donated by local businesses, like FURY Watersports and Lazy Dog paddling.

Last year, Kate Johnson and her husband Joe visited from Morgantown, North Carolina after hearing about it from a friend. She was battling breast cancer since 2010 and was in stage four of her diagnosis. “This island is so beautiful, and we love this atmosphere,” she said while lunching at Two Friends Patio one afternoon. Lynn Cameron from St. Pete visited with her daughters. She was in treatment for the past four years and enjoyed the standup paddle boarding with her family the most. “I’ve always wanted to try it,” she said. For the families who come

down with children, Gage sets up childcare so the parents can enjoy a date night. “We make it so the families can walk in and just exhale,” said Gage. “There is a lot of weight on their shoulders, and this is one week that they don’t have to think about anything.” The families end the week with sunset and dinner at Ft. Zach, which is donated by Three Fine Cooks, who also donate the welcome dinner. Other donors include Chicago’s and Historic Tours of America. “It’s amazing listening to these families share their stories at the end of the week,” said Gage. “Most tried things they’ve never tried before. It’s why we do this, these families will have these forever memories.” March 15 is the deadline to have the houses pinned down for the families. To donate a house for the week of June 19, or get more information on the program, call Gage at 305-879-2655 or email amyg@littlepink.org.

Little Pink Houses of Hope provides a free week long vacation for breast cancer patients and their families. “We believe a cancer diagnosis does not just affect the patient, but the entire family,” said founder Jeanine Patten-Coble. “Every beach retreat is designed to help families relax, reconnect and rejuvenate during the cancer journey.” More information on the program can be found at littlepink.org.

Carl Wagoner rocks the island Musician to open for Randolph & The Family Band By James Whitehead

K

ey Lime pie, flip-flops and happy hour. All of these things are synonymous with the Key West way-of-life. The name Caffeine Carl certainly belongs at the forefront of this list, too. It would be very difficult to find anyone who lives and/ or has visited Key West that is not familiar with Carl and his unbelievable guitar playing and showmanship. Carl Wagoner was born and raised here in Key West. A much

quieter, military-based island back then, Key West was the perfect place for Carl to begin his musical journey. Carl’s first taste of music began at a very early age when he began messing around on his parents Thomas organ, slowly picking out melodies and eventually piecing together chord structures. This, paired with his brother’s “extensive” record collection, peaked his interest in music, especially rock ‘n’ roll. On Christmas Eve of 1980, Carl received his very first guitar at the age of 14 and he’s been, “pickin’ and grinnin’ ever since.” Today, Carl has his hand in an array of different bands and projects. His band Caffeine Carl and the Buzz can be found at the Smokin’ Tuna

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and on Wednesday nights he is at the Lazy Gecko as part of a trio featuring himself, Tony Baltimore and Lee Venters. Carl can also be found playing along the likes of Nick Norman, Joal Rush, Scott Kirby, Claire Finley and many more. As a member of the Sunday Ramble Band, Carl joins many of these same Key West musician’s along with other special guests, to perform all-original music once every couple month’s at the incredible Key West Theater. “The joy of being able to share the stage with all the other Key West musicians you know, but rarely get to play with, is what makes the Sunday Ramble so unique,” Carl said. Carl will take the stage at the Key West Theater again on Saturday, Feb. 20, opening up for the incredible Robert Randolph & the Family Band. Named one of Rolling Stones “top 100 guitarists” Robert Randolph brings what is sure to be an unforgettable performance to Key West and Carl couldn’t be more excited. “I am a huge fan of Robert Randolph and let me tell ya, we gonna blow the roof of the Key West Theater,” Carl said. Third World coming to Key West. Moonsplash concert set for Feb. 27

Contributed

O

ne of Reggae's premier bands Third World, has not played in Key West in more than seven years, but that is about to change, as they are headlining this year's Reggae Moonsplash Festival on Saturday, Feb. 27. This year’s festival takes place at the East Martello Fort and features three great "can’t miss" bands. Third World, who hails from Jamaica, has received 10 Grammy Nominations and was awarded "The United Nations Peace Medal" for their contributions in music and lyrical prose. Furthermore, the Reggae icons have performed with tons of rock heavyweights, including Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Santana, Peter Gabriel and Sting. Also, Johnny Dread, a local favorite with Cuban roots, will be the opening act at the festival — equipped with new material and classics hits. Johnny Dread has been in high demand after opening for The Wailers at last year's Moonsplash Festival in Key West. Also, fans will be treated to a newcomer at this year’s show. The Antigua-based Causion will perform in the Southernmost City for the first time. The group will showcase their island roots, known for its soca and calypso music — creating the perfect Reggae fusion. Moonsplash is produced by The Rotary Club of Key West, along with Key West Arts & Historical Society. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Rotary's College Scholarship Fund. East Martello, which has recently hosted a handful of national acts, promises to be an ideal location for this year’s Reggae Festival, which comes fully equipped with food and drink vendors, beer and liquor and a kids area. The show is from 5 to 11 p.m. and advance tickets (along with V.I.P.) are available at www.keystix.com or Neptune Designs, Bagatelle and Southernmost Beach Cafe. For more details, call 305-754-4044.

Her favorite part of the job – meeting new people. “Everyone is tipsy and happy most of the time,” she said. “The upstairs spot is a great local’s spot, and it’s a little quieter,” she said only having to raise her voice half as much while yelling over the bar. When Kohler isn’t mixing up cocktails late night at Kevin’s, she spends her mornings putting her fingers to work at Southernmost on the Beach as a massage therapist or walking her dog. She does miss the snow from up north, and likes to get off the rock to go snowboarding at least once each winter. She’s probably tearing up the mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado as we speak. state they want accountability, they call for the return of a previously used firm whose past recommendations were questionable at best. Even when one of the firm’s $30,000 plus expenses fee was rejected by the School Board, it then offered its services for free. Most people I know would be very suspicious of such an offer. Carnival hustlers use sleight of hand and misdirection to guide their customers and I wonder if this is a case of directing attention to a very vocal call for accountability while trying to slip in an outcome that in all probability may be at best a very minor “slap on the wrist.” One can only speculate as to reasons why. — Monroe County School Board Member John Dick is the vice chairman of the board and represents the Middle Keys. Little gallery charts its own course

Harrison Gallery celebrating 30 years this month Helen Harrison puts together one of her newer pieces.

M

arried 43 years, Helen and Ben Harrison have been steadfast and true in their love for each other and their gallery. The result is one of the most successful and long-standing galleries in Key West, Harrison Gallery, often referred to as “the little gallery on White Street.” In the 1980s, after 11 years on a sailboat, the Harrison’s docked in Key West and, like most, never left. Their boat had made them lovers of woodworking so Helen and Ben charted a course into the world of art and remained true to their mariner hearts, as craftsmen and free spirits. The goal was to sell their art year round, prompting them to buy the property on White street, house included, and open Harrison Gallery and Music 30 years ago. Their beginnings were simple. Ben was playing music around town so they sold guitar strings and drumsticks from the shop. Helen imported furniture and textiles from Costa Rica and Nicaragua and started her art studio in the back. Eventually, Helen and Ben’s love of sculpture and art won, and the gallery offered fewer commercial goods and involved more artists. “I have a good eye and aesthetics. I know what I like. The thrill of it is to see everyone’s art,” she said. They dropped “Music “ from the name and

began showing other artists. For example, local favorite, Rick Worth launched his illustrious painting career with Helen more than 25 years ago. The 30th anniversary show will focus solely on Helen’s work. Her iconic palm sculptures and crafted gourds always take center stage. But Helen will display some newer works on paper and paintings that reflect her dedication to craft and the environment. Fittingly, Helen and Ben Harrison are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Harrison Gallery on Thursday, Feb. 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery is located at 825 White St., Key West. The public is invited.

she is dressing works in white gold and silver leaf. The works feel regal and quiet, the years of experience both as an artist and a gallery owner shining through and exuding the knowledge that only comes with age. Helen claims she is just trying to “stay in the groove” … but she is the groove. She has mentored 10 “gallery girls” who have gone on to either make or sell art in her footsteps. Helen has been open for almost all the “Night On White” events for the past decade. She has hosted shows for jewelry makers, dress designers, painters, sculptors — all kinds of artists who may have never gotten a chance without her love for art. Like the life Helen and Ben have crafted in Key West, the gallery was never just about them, but about the community they cherish. And don’t wonder if the Harrison’s or their gallery will quit anytime soon. Like a true artist, Helen mused, “I still have so much to do.”

WHO LOVES YA, BABY?

OAST is back at it this spring break with a special edition of their newest camp format, Along the Coast Camp, taking place daily Monday through Friday, March 21-25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., daily in Old Town. The idea, organizers said, is simple. Kids are born to explore. They have loads of energy and curiosity. And they want to learn. So what better place to start than their own backyard? The camp is designed as a five-day trek around Old Town with an emphasis on staying "along the coast" as much as possible. The themes and lessons are all hands-on and "in real time." There's plant, tree and fruit identification, beachcombing and marine biology, and still enough time to climb trees. “But the real lesson is that the journey is the destination. And it's amazing and inspiring to see the kids really immerse themselves in the present throughout the week,” said COAST’s Billy Kearins. Full details on the daily treks and online registration available at www.coastprojects.com/camp BRIEFLY Valentine’s Day Gala tickets are on sale now The 33rd Annual Wesley House’s Valentine’s Day Gala is taking place Sunday, Feb. 14 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Curry Mansion Inn, Key West. Cearley brings the laughs in ‘Buyer & Cellar’

MASTERWORKS SERIES III

He brings Streisand’s basement to life

Thurs, February 25 | 7:30pm Tennessee Williams Theatre

I

know a little about stereotypical Barbra Streisand – typical New Yorwka,’ big nose, sings music. I don’t think I would even recognize one of her songs. I have seen her in only one movie, “Meet the Fockers,” which I thought she was amazingly funny in, but that’s the extent of my Barbra knowledge. And, I certainly have never read her book “My Passion For Design,” so when I read the preview on “Buyer & Cellar,” now showing at Red Barn Theatre through March 12, I had my doubts whether this show was my type of fun. And, boy was I wrong. This is was by far the funniest show I have seen in Key West to date. It even tops my last favorite show “Reefer Madness,” which I saw years ago at Waterfront Playhouse, and I’ve seen a lot of plays here in Key West. Nick Cearley, without a doubt, blows this show out of the water. The one-manshow starts by saying the play, although it has some factual basis, is completely imagined — except for the fact that Barbra Streisand does indeed have a mall, with shops and all, in her Malibu mansion’s basement. It’s been compared to an Apple Store designed by a grandmother, complete with frozen yogurt counter, antique shop, vintage clothing boutique filled with “Gigi” and “Funny Girl” wardrobe pieces, a popcorn machine, and, yes, dolls. In the play, the personal department store is served by one employee, Nick More, and one customer, Barbra Streisand.

By Kristen Livengood

Cearley brings playwright Jonathan Tolin’s work to life. The More character meets Streisand, takes inventory, and works the floor, while also dealing with his personal relationships outside of work. (Cearley also plays Streisand and the one-person back-and-forth is amazing.) This show is funny. The audience could barely catch its breath between lines, but Cearley’s timing was impeccable — waiting for the house to catch up before tossing off the next killer. For 90 minutes, Cearley barely takes a breath to the detriment of the audience’s over-laughed, hurting abdominals. The question at the end comes down to this: Can a person create the perfect little world (in her basement)? Bonus points if you have seen Streisand’s “Mirror” and “Gypsy.” Even though, I haven’t, Cearley’s words walked me through each one with precision. I am planning on catching up on some Streisand flicks over the weekend because she was painted as such as interesting character in “Buyer & Cellar.” For tickets, visit redbarntheatre. com, or call 305-296-9911.

Alex More, played by the talented Nick Cearley, makes believe in Barbra Streisand’s basement at Red Barn Theatre in the one-man-show. The show runs through March 12. Cearley will also be doing a short stint in his “Skivvies” with Lauren Molina Feb. 12 through 15 at Red Barn Theatre.

Double date for Valentine’s Day Landon Bradbary and Miguel Perez host a tourist show for locals By Hays Blinckmann

ooking for that perfect couple to hang out with on Valentine’s Day? That couple who seems to go together like tequila and a jukebox? That can make you laugh harder than a good tourist joke? On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 13-14, Landon Bradbary and Miguel Perez are putting on the Key West Variety Show at the Key West Theater. For two nights, the comedy duo will entertain, amuse and seduce the audience with banter, song, and skits. Don’t expect good, clean fun, however, as they tackle the theme of “Love” on Valentine’s day; nothing is off limits. Landon landed in Key West 13 years ago from the far off Oz of New York City, a veteran of theater, opting to be poor and happy. “I’ve been successful at both,” he said, smiling. Landon bartends at The Porch most nights, where he met up with Miguel Perez, a Key West native and hip local musician, playing outside.

Miguel’s music varies from Latin flavor jams, mellow hip hop to the ironic raps of MC Couscous, his alter ego. (The two collaborated on Miguel’s music videos, cementing their destiny to perform together. Watch the “3000 Thread Count” video and you will see them shine with millennial glossiness and ironic glory.) Landon is quite obviously the fire behind the duo but Miguel

is the gasoline. Without filter or shame, they entertain. This is their third Variety show. Landon takes center stage hosting, and Miguel is his musical sidekick. Years of working with the Key West Burlesque show, Landon has gathered an assortment of performers including: Joe Madaus and Lliam Dufresne providing additional comedy, Dan Schwab giving out inappropriate Valentines, Tony Baltimore and Claire Sawyer smoothing things over with some Jazz, and Velvet Garcia paying tribute to David Bowie. One special act not to be missed is Melissa Arleth with her trained rats performing Cirque De Sewer. And last but not least, Landon will be reenacting bad Trip Advisor reviews of local restaurants. “This show is good for singles, couples and people dating themselves,” Landon promises. Go, laugh, enjoy the full bar and remember Pat Benatar’s immortal words, “Love is a Battlefield” as they shamelessly tickle your candy hearts. SABRINA & RONNIE

You would never believe Sabrina and Ronnie Acevedo met at a library, but you would believe they met at a dance club called The Late Night Library while both were attending Florida State University. (Shhh, don’t tell their parents) But that is the kind of fun, vibrant couple these two have always been together. They met 23 years ago and now have been married for 18. Ronnie, born and raised in Key West, had a plan: live in nine different cities to prove the obvious choice was to return to paradise, creating their permanent home here with friends and family. In Key West for 14 years, they have had the next generation of Acevedos: Greyson, 11 and Piper, 7. Sabrina has been with Doug Mayberry Real Estate from its start and Ronnie is with the popular Coastal Wine and Spirits.

ANGIE & ABBY

Angie Arkin and Abby Duckwall met fortuitously in 2006 when Abby came to Angie for a reading. Angie is an established intuitive healer in Key West, but she didn’t see what was coming when Abby stepped in the door. Both of them vibrant, appreciative and humorous in nature, they were immediately drawn to one another. They had their first date at La Trattoria and subsequently, it never ended. Prone to practical jokes, Abby, who works at Date and Thyme, keeps Angie laughing and their cats running. Married last June on Higgs Beach during a rainstorm, they knew they could weather anything. Not knowing if friends or family would show in the storm, Angie and Abby were surprised to find 50 guests huddled under umbrellas, drenched but with undeterred excitement for the couple. This is why they love Key West, the people and the vibe.

NICK & KELLY Like many relationships in Key West, you have to cross paths many times before looking up and seeing each other. Nick and Kelly Norman were friends, and then it happened one night at The Green Parrot — everything changed. It had been seven years since they had seen each other and Nick, a musician, was performing. Kelly looked up and couldn’t help but fall in love with his smile. After that night, they saw each other again at the best party in town, Fantasy Fest, and decided the fun never had to end. A year later they were engaged and married shortly after, but their most cherished moment together has been welcoming their 11-month-old daughter, Taylor. Nick and Kelly take advantage of the rare privilege and opportunity the island affords, they work together at the Key West Theater. Nick, 36, is the music director and Kelly, 34, marketing and development director. They embrace island life enjoying “almost no commute to work” and tons of family time with each other and their daughter. And best of all, “Taylor loves watching her daddy perform.”

nsung Heroes celebrates volunteerism and community service. The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys shined the spotlight on the good deeds of 90 volunteers who gave their time and talents to non-profits in the Florida Keys. Monroe County charitable organizations nominated their volunteers to be recognized for their good work. Since 1996, the Community Foundation has been working with non-profits, volunteers, and donors to build philanthropy and support the important work of non-profits in making the Florida Keys a better place to live now and in the future.

Lower Keys Women’s Club “It is an honoring and humbling experience because I don’t do it for recognition,” said Abby Oglesbee, Lower Keys Women’s Club’s Unsung Hero. “It was like a big thank you hug from the group.” She became involved with the group when her neighbor brought her to a luncheon in 2003. “I see a need in our community for people who don’t have many resources,” she said, adding that her mother’s illness motivated her to help others who cannot help themselves. “I hope to continue to energize the club with all that I have learned and growing the club to help even more charities.”

ROB STOBER Good Health Clinic “We have been supporters of the Good Health Clinic since they opened in 2004,” said Rob Stober, of his involvement and that of his wife, Claudia. He was recently asked to enter the Big Kahuna contest to help raise money for the clinic. Unfortunately, he is limited to winning Big Kahuna only once, but is continuing to support the organization by following the tradition of helping the new

contestants. “I was humbled to be included with the other recipients who do so much for this community,” he said.

MARK TODARO Kids Come First “Very humbling and honored,” said Mark Todaro, president of Kids Come First, a nonprofit dedicated to the needs of local youth, about his recognition as the Unsung Hero for the group. “I’m not doing this for recognition, but for the kids to help improve their lives.” He started in 2009 with his now wife’s nudging. Last year, Kids Come First were the recipients for National Comcast Days and were assisted in improving a park playground along with a cash donation to non-profit. “Currently, we are getting ready to collect clothes for the three high school proms, both the young ladies and young men,” he said.

of Leadership Class 16 when she was first asked to be a part of the non-profit’s Board of Directors. “I had a lot on my plate at the time and declined,” she said, but was asked again and able to step up to the plate. “It’s a well-meaning and great program,” she said about being honored as the group’s Unsung Hero. “People learn so much from Leadership.” She added that it was an honor just to be selected to be involved with the Class 16, let alone just be on the board. “The networking and connections you make, and people you meet, are so helpful for personal reasons and to help with other non-profits we are involved with,” she said. “What would we do without the nonprofits? They fill such need in our community.”

MAINSTREAMING | GOOD GIFTS

SHARK NAVIGATOR The Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional Upright is for the women that can’t afford a Dyson. (That’s okay: after using one of those Dyson hand-dryers in public restrooms, and seeing old, loose skin blowing around on the back of a hand like a gross, old person, frankly we’re off the brand. Permanently.) So, get the Shark Navigator. It’s a good compromise for the woman/ man in your life that has to suck it up. $160 @ The Home Depot

WINE OPENER This is one is self-explanatory: Mom’s/ Dad’s Little Helper. In shopping for this item, the spouse has to have a deep understanding of his or her mate. Will he/she appreciate the $9 job from Walgreens, or is his/her taste a little more lavish — like the tabletop version from True Fabrications that costs more than $60? Of course, consumption comes into play, too. Our advice: go all out. And, get a bottle of wine, too. $62 @ amazon.com

SAMSUNG SMART TV This is a good Valentine’s Day gift because, frankly, the screens go on sale after Super Bowl Sunday. In fact, it’s every couple’s favorite threesome — like a best friend in the bedroom and no one will judge. The TV shares content and information with Samsung Smartphones and even has an alarm feature to start itself in the morning. You know, ‘cause the weather. 40-inch for $430.
