LOCAL CHATTER By Hays Blinckmann Dare we say it out loud? (Nooooo, plu-eease.) It’s Spring Break. They’re back. Gird your loins and protect your sanity, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. From “funneling” mojitos to wearing bathing suits that could be mistaken as shoe laces, the next generation of party goers is here — yes, we know because it is being Instagram-ed, Tweeted and selfied into the virtual universe hourly from mile marker 100 to 1. Given most, hopefully, are in college, we decided to test some University of Florida students on their Keys knowledge…

Commission settles on name for City Hall Also settles matters of littering, trash carts and change orders By Britt Myers
W
ith the Peary Court referendum dominating local discussions and forums all over town, Tuesday’s Key West City Commission meeting was seemingly antidramatic—lasting only a few hours before a sparse crowd at Old City Hall. In fact, one of the bigger stories came from the dais and not the agenda, when Mayor Craig Cates arrived for the meeting. Many speculated the Mayor, who had been battling an illness for over a week, would remain absent from Tuesday’s meeting. However, a determined Cates, often times soft spoken and forfeiting his “State of the City” due to obvious fatigue, remained throughout the duration—receiving remarks of support from his fellow commissioners. New City Hall to honor legacies In a vote of 6-2, Commissioners approved a resolution to authorize the naming of the new City Hall as “Josephine Parker City Hall at Historic Glynn Archer School.” Several community leaders, including Key West High School Principal Amber Archer Bosco, spoke in favor of the name, arguing the City had an opportunity to preserve the legacy of two influential legacies. “[The name] may be too long to some, but those two individuals gave many long hours in service to this community,” said Bosco. “You have the power to keep both names, showing others that our rich history is not to be forgotten – that those two individuals aren’t to be forgotten.” Only two Commissioners voted against the designation. Commissioner Margaret Romero said she believed the building should honor the taxpayers and to “keep it simple” with a smaller title. Romero also noted both Parker and Archer already had several buildings named in their honor.
Commissioner Billy Wardlow also dissented. And while he pledged his support to commemorating both legacies, Wardlow argued the lengthy appellation was simply too long for the current specs on the building. “I just think it’s too busy across the front,” said Commissioner Wardlow. “I’d rather [shrink the name] than have them all squished in there and then have someone say it’s not going to fit.” But Commissioners Jimmy Weekley and Sam Kaufman both argued for the proposed
title. With Weekley citing a previous resolution that mandated Parker’s name be relocated with City Hall in perpetuity, while Kaufman stressed the historical significance. “One hundred years from now it will cause people to ask, ‘Who was Josephine Parker and Glynn Archer?’ and it’s important that we preserve our history,” said Kaufman. “These things are important and I’m looking at it from a historical perspective.” Other Items: • Commissioners passed an

ordinance allowing penalties for smokers who discard (or litter) cigarette butts on City property. Speaking on behalf of Leadership Monroe County, who spearheaded the countywide agenda, Judge Peary Fowler urged the dais to be the example for the rest of Monroe County. “Everyone from up and down the Keys will have a say on this ordinance,” said Judge Fowler. “Key West can set the standard.” As of now, KWPD will have the discretion to offer warnings or a $100 fine to first-time offenders. Key West City Attorney Shawn Smith added that fines could intensify if not paid within 10 days. And while the violation cannot be deemed a criminal offense, unpaid tickets could land on personal credit reports if not reconciled. The ordinance passed unanimously. • Commissioners also approved an item that would allocate any excess revenue from Peary Court rentals to be placed in the Affordable Housing Trust Fund for the purpose of funding future workforce housing. The measure is only applicable should the Peary Court referendum pass in March. • In addition, Key West residents will be receiving new garbage and waste receptacles over the next 12 months. Commissioners approved $586,279 for the purchase of 96-gallon trash carts. Waste Management and the City claim the larger vessels will alleviate the need for so many receptacles on residential properties. The item passed 6-1 with Commissioner Kaufman dissenting. • And the City will tap into contingency funds for the completion of the new City Hall project. A change order for $205,490.85 from Burke Construction was approved unanimously. Complications arose when rain and weather caused damage to plaster within the unfinished structure. The unforeseen repairs have the ability to extend the construction by 90 days. However, City officials are still targeting an Aug. 14 completion date.

omankind has unveiled a program that helps not only pay for tests, but also helps fund treatment if necessary. “We can help up to two hundred women in the Florida Keys this year alone,” said Kim Romano, executive director of Womankind. Free health screenings for breast and cervical cancer — funded by the Center for Disease Control and the Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program — provides free screening for qualified women but more importantly, help with funding treatment if diagnosed. If cancer is detected, then patients will be immediately enrolled with the FBCCED and guided into a special Medicaid program that will fund treatment for up to five years. With today’s Kim Romano health care system still in flux, programs like these are vital to the health of our community, Romano said. The first qualification is that the initial screening take place within the program, either at Womankind in Key West or with

two Keys hospitals — Fishermen’s Community Hospital and Lower Keys Medical Center. After the initial screenings and diagnostics, the hospitals will work with Medicaid and treat the program’s patients. (This is a statewide program and if a patient chooses, she may seek treatment anywhere in the state of Florida.) “Screening is the best protection, but our hope is nobody falls through the cracks afterwards,” said Banwarie, referencing the importance that follow-up treatment be funded as well. Nadyne Fundora, with the FBCCED, will serve as the Keys case manager. She said she hopes that within three days of diagnosis, the patients will be enrolled in the special Medicaid program to cover treatment, chemotherapy and even reconstructive surgery. Before this program, Romano relied on the help of the Zonta Club for providing free screening vouchers and Dr. Michael Klitenick who offered many pro bono services. With the FBCCED program, she said Womankind will offer more security and sustainability to Keys’ women in need and their health care providers. aking their fourth Ocean Key Resort Sunset Pier appearance, Badfish will once again play for a maxed out crowd on the dock in this year’s free concert in Key West. Heralded as one of the country’s best tribute bands, Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime, has become an annual tradition at the resort. “Since 2010, Badfish has always found time to include Key West in their busy touring schedule,” said Rodger Levering, director of food and beverage at Ocean Key Resort, and who helped create the ultra-chic local’s only VIP section in front of the stage for this year. “We are just trying to host a great free concert for the community and we hope everyone has a super time at the Sunset Pier.” Last time Badfish Drummer Scott Begin was in Key West, he was rocking crutches behind the drum set, and is looking forward to the Duval Crawl after the concert Tuesday night. “We typically don’t get a lot of time when we are down in the Keys playing,” he said in a recent phone interview. “But, in the little time we do get, we make the most of it.” The band started playing the
West Coast 15 years ago while at the University of Rhode Island on the East Coast. “Sublime was the quintessential band we listened to growing up,” said Begin. “Their album ‘Sublime’ served as a sound track for our high school and college years.” The covers started as fun, but escalated quickly from packing fraternity basements to selling out venues in Chicago, New York, New Jersey, and Fort Lauderdale. They’ve even been able to play with Sublime’s drummer Bud Gaugh, who has opened for them in the past. Sublime was a ’90s band, whose front man died of a heroin overdose right before the third self-titled album dropped, and have ska/reggae infused hits like “Santeria,” “Wrong Way,”“What I Got,” and Begin’s right-now fave “Seed.”

“My favorites change from week-to-week,” he said. “But, right now, this one is keeping me on my toes as a drummer,” he said. Badfish stays pretty loyal and faithful to their Sublime roots, but are able to add a little bit of their own personal touch if the occasion calls for it. They have also released some of their own music over the years, but will be playing the all-Sublime set for an hour and 45 minutes starting Tuesday, March 8 at 8:30 p.m. Opening for Badfish on the main stage will be local favorite Patrick and The Swayzees at 7 p.m. and the side stage will be rocking Happy Dog at 1 p.m. and Hot Beer at 5 p.m.

orld-renowned music legend, professional surfer, artist and father — Donavon Frankenreiter — returns to the East Martello Fort in Key West on Sunday, March 13. In August of last year, the Keys Weekly hit Donavon with some standard questions, so we asked him if it would be cool to loosen things up this go-around. And true to form, the laid back performer did not disappoint — sharing on everything from Bob Dylan to Ben Stiller. — Britt Myers Who would play you [Donavon Frankenreiter] in a movie? I would have to say Ben Stiller because I’ve been surfing with him a couple times and he’s really fun and a great actor. But it would it have to be a comedy. Finish this sentence. My kids have taught me… … how to enjoy the moment. The greatest compliment you’ve received? Whenever people say they admire the way I’m a husband and a father. I think that’s the most important thing in my life. Better for the soul … sex or exercise? I think they’re kind of like, or could be the same thing if done correctly, so both [laughing]. I think they’re both really good for the soul. Best songwriter? There’s so many that it’s hard for me to narrow down, but I really love Bob Dylan. He’s that one guy that I love, love listening to. Guilty pleasure? I live on seven acres in Hawaii and love gardening. But it’s not like a guilty pleasure. If you could tell the presidential candidates one thing it would be… I would tell them it’s probably the most entertaining presidential race I’ve ever witnessed. I’m actually paying more attention to it for the first time in a long time. I feel … that it might be nice to have someone in there who isn’t bought out by either all the pharmaceutical companies or all the lobbyists. … Candidates [are] getting elected and then the only people they answer to are the people who donated money to them. It’s a crazy thing. I really just hope that whoever gets in there makes it right for everybody… beautiful for everybody in America. I remember where I was when I first heard….? I was on a airplane that had a playlists of songs with new artists and pop artists and I remember hearing Norah Jones for the first time when she sang “Come Away With Me” and I was like ‘Oh my God, who is this girl singing?’ And there’s been a million of those moments when you’ve been somewhere and you hear something and it kind of stops you in your tracks. Another one is the first time I heard Stevie Ray Vaughn or Derek Trucks. One of the coolest moments for you as a musician and artist? I’ve got to play with a lot of crazy people but one that stands out is when I played my song “It Don’t Matter” with Graham Nash, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Mike Hamilton and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and that was amazing playing with them live. And I’ve jammed with Warren Haynes, Ben Harper, G-Love and Jack Johnson and all of those guys have been great. I know Warren Haynes has been a big influence on you, when is the last time you saw him? The last time I saw him play was at a beach festival with the Allman Brothers. It’s one of the greatest concerts I’ve seen and the night I got to meet Derek Trucks. I told [Warren] how special the show was and he was just like, ‘yeah, it was alright.’ But that just shows you the perspective and how good he really is because it was literally over the top. … I’ve never heard anybody play guitar better than Derek Trucks. I did a tour with him and Mule one time and Warren brought me into the Gibson factory and told me to pick out a guitar. I was overwhelmed … so I just asked Warren to pick it out. It was 59 Reissue and the greatest gift ever — something I will always cherish because he picked it out. Favorite thing about Key West? I haven’t spent much time there and I hope I get to. But the thing I really admired last time was the drive there and going over those bridges and getting to Key West. I know that sounds completely lame but that was really exciting for me. The last time I was there it was more of a hit-and run situation with the hurricane thing and we had to set up and then take off, so hopefully I get a chance to walk around and do some things this time.

an’t get your babysitter to stay as late as the Green Parrot is open? Is Miami sounding farther and father away just to go to for a concert? (Sorry, Madonna we are getting old; you, too, by the way.) Evan Haskell of Key West Concerts faced the same dilemma. Owning his own business, WeCycle, and raising two kids with wife, Camilla, Evan said good-bye to the spur-of-the-moment road trips to see the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers four hours away. But does growing up and older mean sacrificing good, live music? Hell to the no. Born and raised in Key West, Evan made an important connection between his desire for live music and the success of East Martello Fort as a venue during the ginormous annual Zombie Ride. (The Zombie Ride is the brainchild of Evan and his friend Marky Pierson of WonderDog Productions.) Together they imagined Key West Concerts, too. “The Fort had been largely ignored as a venue and I saw a void in the community-affordable concerts with national artists in a local setting,” said Evan. ately jumped on board. Evan and Marky wanted to bring the music to Key West, but on Key West terms. Getting bands is tricky — Evan solicits acts that he feels fit the Key West vibe. He rejects some and hounds booking agents for others. But the result has been family friendly, soul music with singer songwriters such as JJ Grey and Mofro, Will Dailey, and Blair Crimmins & the Hookers. The biggest Key West Concert featured Donavon Frankenreiter, whose first concert was so successful he is returning again on Sunday, March 13. (See opposite page.) Opening up for Donavan is local musician Miguel Perez. Miguel is excited. “I think bringing nationally known acts are important to mix things up,” he said. While still relatively new, Key West Concerts are drawing crowds in the hundreds. Evan and Marky said locals and visitors like the “accessible entertainment” style of concert. “It’s about sitting on the lawn, picnic style with families, musicians and people dancing under the stars at the historic fort,” said Marky. And best of all, kids under 12 get in for free. For more information on upcoming concerts, go to www. keywestconcerts.com

Adrienne: the Keys musician with only one name By James Whitehead
F
or many musicians, songwriting isn’t something that comes naturally. For Adrienne Zolondick, it was clear from an early age she had a knack for creating original music. Upon learning the guitar at age eight, and teaching herself to play along with songs on the radio, Adrienne soon began to transform her poetry into original tunes. After attending both the Walnut Hill School of the Performing Arts and Berklee College of Music, Adrienne and another musician were enticed to move to Key West where they were told they would “blossom in Paradise.” They drove down from Harvard Square in a VW bus, and formed the duo “Aye”
in 1993. They would have their “farewell” show at Club Chameleon, now the Key West Theater, in 1995 and would leave they island for a brief spell. Adrienne returned to Key West in 2001 and began performing again on a regular basis. She began teaching at the Montessori Charter School and the Bahama Village Music program here in Key West and continues to perform at places like the White Tarpon, Virgilio’s, My New Joint, Boondocks and several other locations up and down the Keys. While recording her last album, “Chameleons,” Adrienne focused heavily on the recording process and learning about the different software applications to use the skills on a piece she was hired to orchestrate. “I’ve been having a lot of fun arranging the tune with all au-
thentic orchestral sounds with the software program,” she said. Adrienne is also in the process of recording a new album of original music she has written with local songwriter Larry Smith. On Sunday, March 20, Adrienne will join fellow female musicians Claire Finley, Robyn Whitehead, Leah Orlikowski, Shastina Childs and Karri Dailey as part of the latest Sunday Ramble production at The Key West Theater. “The Ramble Band is made up of exceptional players and a fun group of people that I am looking forward to playing with,” she said. “It will be a blast!” You can find all of Adrienne’s music on adriennemusic.com. Check her out at the coming Sunday Ramble. Tickets available at thekeywesttheater.com.

“I
love French wines,” UVA owner and wine sommelier Mark Gambuzza said at a recent tasting at his Fleming Street shop. “My personal favorite is a white burgundy.” He’s talking about the Moillard Grivot Chablis Premier Cru. “I sell a considerable amount of it,” he said. “Even if you are predominantly a red wine drinker, this appeals to most because it is crisp, dry, and full bodied.” It’s the perfect wine to accompany seafood and chicken, but also goes well with cheese and fruit. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, he came down 16 years ago to visit Fort Lauderdale and took a road trip to Key West and knew this is where he wanted to end up. In addition to his wide selection of wines, he also has an assortment of cheese and jam for sale.

here’s a little secret on Little Palm. The resort is offering a limited amount of tickets to the “Sandbar Sessions” — a regular concert (and one lecture!) series on the remote island resort in the most intimate and romantic setting imaginable. There are only 40 tickets available to non-guests, for sale on keystix.com. The series began with a one-man concert by John Hiatt on Feb. 25. The concert-trippers were ferried over from Little Torch Key to Little Palm in comfort and then ushered to the resort’s beach with southwest exposure. Comfortable groupings of couches and chairs faced a small, but well-lit stage. “I have more than one of his albums,” confided Melody Dodamead of Marathon. Rich Fielder of Cudjoe Key is also very familiar with his music, once embarking on a special music cruise featuring Hiatt, despite his general abhorrence for such. Hiatt’s career spans decades and the audience was thrilled to have what amounts to a private concert. A talented musician, Hiatt is probably better known for his songwriting and he’s been covered by the likes of Three Dog Night, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Jewel and Keith Urban. On the Little Palm stage, he opened with a rockin’ “A Real Fine Love,” transitioned smoothly to a bluesy “Like a Freight Train,” then entertained the crowd with “Buffalo River Home.” His voice has character and brings the diverse songwriting and subject matter to life. More than an hour of music flew by as guests sipped cocktails, and indulged in some discreet “chair dancing.” This is the second year of the Sandbar Sessions and Little Palm Resort has five upcoming concerts including the Fabulous Thunderbirds (“Tuff Enough”) and the incomparable guitarist Stanley Jordan. Little Palm has been hosting the Sandbar Sessions for six years. Past performers include American, Keb Mo and Aaron Neville.

T
he world premiere of the original play “Locura,” by Key West playwright Michael Marrero opens at the Key West Theater next week. “Locura” is set in Key West in the early 1980s and centers around an uncle and his nephew as they make their way through rooster fights, Monkey Island, Big Pine, shrimpers, and the open ocean. “Probably a good description would be a twisted island version of ‘The Odyssey,’” says Marrero about the plot. The title of the play, “Locura,” directly translates to “insanity.” Marrero chose the title because he “always felt that island life in general is its own kind of insanity; especially back before the modern world caught up with it. It’s also an apt description for the situations the characters finds themselves in.” Marrero began working on “Locura” more than 15 years ago, first developing it as an oral history, then a short play produced last season as “Bones & Pie.” “It’s based on the events of my youth and on my Dad’s experiences from that particular time in Key West,” says Marrero. “Some of the s@#! we saw and experienced was hard to believe. Octavio is the more introverted character, while Chumpi is “just balls-out crazy” with a temper to match, says Marrero. 100 Years of Service
The Rotary Club of Key West Celebrates By Hays Blinckmann & Britt Myers
“I
s it the Truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Is it beneficial to all concerned?” Those four questions are the standard by which the Rotary Club of Key West has measured itself by for the past 100 years. Designated the “Four Way Test,” Rotary clubs all over the world adhere to the common creed. Yet for the historic Key West faction, it has been a defining doctrine for a group that’s history and influences are interwoven into the fabric of a community. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the club and on April 1, the organization will host its Centennial Gala to honor their founders, while carrying forward the torch of ambassadorship and service. “This is a celebration with the young guard honoring the old guard,” said Rachel Oropeza, who was bestowed the honor of being named the club’s 100th President in 2015. As a female member, Oropeza is also a symbolic testament to the progressive nature of a club that emerged alongside a city embracing tolerance, equality and humanity. Additionally, she honors the strides made by Elizabeth Freeman, the club’s first female member, along with Karen Thurman, who served as the club’s first female President (there have been five since). Today, the local organization is comprised of 120 devoted civic-minded men and women, all working towards the advancement and quality of the community. Not only does Rotary support local projects, like free dental care for children

in need and local scholarships; they also contribute to Rotary International through contributions and volunteer efforts. “Rotary broadens your perspective,” said Alton Weekley (President 1987-88). “When you consider the efforts we’ve made to eradicate polio or assist countries like Haiti in a time of need, it’s important that people recognize what we do on a local level can impact people all around the world.” Origins: During the past century, the Key West Rotary Club has molded the Southernmost City and the Florida Keys by immeasurable proportions. Constituted on growing need for community service and unity, it is unlikely the founding members could have envisioned how their contributions would affect the contemporary economy and social spheres of
Key West. The goal of any Rotary club is to provide humanitarian service to their communities and throughout the world, while fostering peace and goodwill to any person of any age, gender or race. And on April 1st, 1916 the first Key West President, Jefferson Browne (attorney and future Florida Supreme Court Justice) gathered 26 prominent businessmen in Key West and formed the International Association of Rotary Clubs. Doctors, lawyers, grocers, realtors, bankers, newspapermen, and timely, railway and tobacco men, saw a common need that could only be fulfilled through a unified effort to give back— without seeking recognition or thanks. “It is humbling to be a part of such an amazing history,” said George Galvin (President 2004). “There is no substitute for the friendships and the relation-

(CONT.) or award thousands in scholarships to local students.” This Rotary Club was sponsored by the chapter in Tampa, and in turn spawned two more clubs in the Keys — the Marathon Rotary Club and the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club. (There’s also a Sunset Rotary Club in Key West, making three.)

ships you can make when serving with men and women on projects.” One of the club’s initial contributions came in 1917 with an initiative to bring the American Red Cross to Key West. In addition, the club provided care for Merchant Marines and Naval Veterans, helped clear and establish Bayview Park in 1922 and they contributed to the original “Parade of Palms” along Roosevelt in 1971. Even today the club helps fund trees and gardens at our local museums and schools. “A number of organizations around Key West exist because Rotarians either brought them about or heavily supported them,” said Alton Weekley. “The Key West Library and the Chamber of Commerce are both great testaments to Rotary.” In 1925 the group backed a conservation proposal to ban shooting and trapping birds, along with protecting Key Deer —the same law that exists today. In 1934 Edward Strunk, Jr. encouraged the club to write Florida’s congress supporting the establishment of the Everglades National Park. After the hurricane of 1936, at the behest of Bascom Grooms and Edward Strunk,
Jr., Rotary was instrumental in clearing the bridges for cars after the railroad was demolished. And in 1947, Merili Hilton, later wife of Mayor Sonny McCoy, was the first high school senior to receive a Rotary sponsorship for school. Today, the KWRC gives $40,000 in scholarships each year to local students. “When I was installed as President in 2009 it was 82 years to the day that my Great Grandfather served in the same position,” said Bascom Grooms. “The purpose behind what we do is genuine, especially when we deliver food on Thanksgiving, help kids with dental needs
Present: A century later, the disposition of the club remains true to its diverse history with over 100 members from all sectors and vocations of Key West. Today’s Rotary looks much like it did one hundred years ago with one big exception. While the Ladies Guild provided 50-cent lunches to the Rotarian businessmen in the 1930’s, now a woman presides over lunch, while dozens of others participate in leadership roles. “Rotary constantly teaches me to be humble and kind,” said Jessica Cranney, who is one the club’s most active ambassadors. “And when you get out there and volunteer, you really get to see the difference an organization can make both locally and world-wide.” On April 1, the club hosts its Centennial Gala to honor their founders, while carrying the torch of ambassadorship and service into another century. Undoubtedly, the spirit of some of Key West’s most inspiring pioneers will be shining down, as the club’s motto, “Service Above Self,” continues to thrive in the Southernmost City. Honoring founding members Frank Toppino and Ed Knight, the evening looked back at the successes and camaraderie. —Weekly Staff report

The Soppressata pizza, Caprese salad and cream soda at Clemente’s Pizza Trolley are a treasure.
Pizza makers arrive with trolley Clemente’s dough involves three-day process By Chance Parker
L
ong before spotting little Clemente’s Pizza Trolley tucked away in its nook, at the corner of Angela and Duval, you smell it. From blocks away, the enticing aroma beckons the weary Duval crawler, often into the wee hours as the trolley remains open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, capitalizing on the late-night, Key West street-food culture. As one patron proudly proclaimed during my visit, “This is the last thing I’m gonna eat before I pass out!” Indeed, sir, and with good reason. Trolley conductor/ owner/ pizza chef, Eleisha, along with her boyfriend, Angelo, take special care with their pies from start to finish, but there is a definite focus on crust aboard this cable car. That exceptionally corniced crust begins with the dough and a simple recipe of highly refined Italian flour,
yeast, water, and salt that is slow mixed, and hand kneaded. It then undergoes a three-day cold rise process; few take such care with pizza dough. The result is an authentic, Neapolitan pizza, something not replicated on the island. However, one could not achieve the crunchy, chewy, airy texture of Clemente’s crust without an exceptional oven, and an exceptional oven they possess. Imported from Rome, the true engine of the trolley is constructed entirely of brick and mortar, cooks at 900 degrees, and will typically have your pizza ready in 90 seconds. Since arriving in Key West
Clemente’s Pizza Trolley Corner of Angela and Duval streets 305.900.7035 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday; 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday
in August, Eleisha and Angelo have developed quite a following. Aside from the fantastic food, the restored San Francisco cable car is picturesque, and creates an almost carnival atmosphere at this location. Diners stand around worn cable spools, or sit along rustic planks. Smoke billows from the stack as mischievous chickens dash around. The roaring fire in the oven glints off the polished brass … but enough waxing poetic, back to the food! We began with the Caprese salad, and a San Pellegrino Aranciata (no alcohol sold on this ride, so bring a roadie if you desire). I am admittedly a sucker for a Caprese, and this one delivered: heirloom tomatoes, a delicious balsamic, and wonderfully buoyant mozzarella. We then sampled three different pies. The Honey Bacon, a white pizza, was sweet, with perfectly caramelized onions, and crunchy, with thick-cut bacon. One member of my party described it as “the perfect breakfast pizza,” and it was indeed scrumptious the next morning. Before making our Hawaiian, Eleisha had the audacity to ask us if we minded that her Hawaiian had the very same thick-cut bacon on it as the Honey Bacon. (I send this out as a notice to any further establishments that I might visit: I have never, and will never, mind said addition.) This example contends for the best Hawaiian pizza I have ever tasted. The combination of fresh pineapple with aforementioned bacon was transcendent. The Soppressata with hot peppers was savory and spicy — crumbled salami, paired with the not overtly spicy peppers — created a classic pizza combination that I wish I could have a bite of right at this moment. Paired with a cane sugar cream soda, this threw me into Tony Soprano’s childhood, at least as I imagine it. The obstacles are few, and the rewards are large. If you don’t mind a few errant yardfowl, or eating world-class pie standing at a cable spool, Clemente’s Pizza Trolley might be just the ticket for your pizza commute.
