LOCAL CHATTER By Hays Blinckmann Dare we say it out loud? (Nooooo, plu-eease.) It’s Spring Break. They’re back. Gird your loins and protect your sanity, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. From “funneling” mojitos to wearing bathing suits that could be mistaken as shoe laces, the next generation of party goers is here — yes, we know because it is being Instagram-ed, Tweeted and selfied into the virtual universe hourly from mile marker 100 to 1. Given most, hopefully, are in college, we decided to test some University of Florida students on their Keys knowledge…

$292,000,000 Marathon convenience store sells winning Powerball ticket! By Sara Matthis

A

s news spread on Thursday morning, the working class of Marathon was speculating about absent employees. Surely the winner of the $292 million Powerball jackpot winner — ticket purchased in Marathon — wasn’t likely to show up … or would they? Did we mention the winning ticket is worth $292 million? To one winner, no sharing? It was a one in 2.3 million chance for Florida players who purchased tickets for the last drawing, a rollover affair since January. The gossip spread like wildfire around the tiny town. Of course, the winner hasn’t come forward yet (at least, not as of press time), but that didn’t slow the guesses. “I hope the person who won is somebody in need. And I hope I sold him the ticket,” said Sylvina Ellis, a clerk at the Tom Thumb convenience store at the corner of U.S.1 and Sombrero Beach Road. She said her customers buying Lotto often promise to split the winnings. “I tell them not to say that unless they’re serious,” she said, laugh-

ing. What would she do? She said she would go back to Saint Kitts and become a missionary. Almost $300 million would do an awful lot of God’s work, wouldn’t it? Dan Halladay is the manger of the Tom Thumb store in Marathon. He said he knew by 9 a.m. and by noon, both the Key West representative of the Florida Lottery, as well as the Miami guy, were both on premises. “I want to know who won it. Was it a local?” Halladay wondered. Of course, that’s what everyone is wondering. Because $292 million is a huge number. A local winner, one who loves Marathon, has the ability to change the course of this town for the better. “It wasn’t my ticket. Not me. I’m working today,” said ‘Ube’ Eubanks, a local paver, with a grin. Local taxi driver Jeff Harris said he often buys Lotto tickets at Tom Thumb. “I haven’t bought a Powerball ticket recently,” he said, “but I am happy for them. And this is a great little store, they support us,” said Jeff Hamil. Almost $300 million would buy a lot of gas, wouldn’t it? Tom Thumb will receive

an $85,000 reward for selling the winning ticket, according to Florida Lottery officials in Tallahassee. Rich Klyczek, Tom Thumb’s director of operations, said this is good news all around for the 51-year-old business with 15 convenience stores from Ft. Lauderdale all the way down to Stock Island. “This is the first time we remember selling a ticket of this size,” Klyczek said. “And the people in our headquarters couldn’t be happier for the people in the field. They are the ones who make it work.” Klyczek said Florida Lottery officials confirmed it was a quick pick — five numbers plus the Powerball number. Florida joined the Powerball sweepstakes in 2009. Since then, there have been 12 Powerball winners in Florida. That includes the January winner from Melbourne, Florida; one of three winners in the almost $1 billion payday. A Key West man got a small share of that pie

— he picked the five numbers correctly, but not the Powerball number. That was enough to net him $1 million. But this is the first time there’s been a winning Powerball ticket sold in Monroe County. The winner of the prize has 180 days to claim his or her prize if they intend to accept the 30-year payout of the $292 million. Otherwise, he or she only has 60 days if they want to collect the $191 million before taxes. This particular Lotto generates $25 million for Florida education, and who knows what it will mean for Marathon. “I hope it’s a local winner,” said Halladay. “But if it’s a visitor, I bet they just decided to extend their vacation.” Almost $300 million would buy a lot of affordable housing, too, or a minority stake in the local newspaper, or maybe even pay for a community pool in Marathon — or just a lot of cupcakes. his “little” festival packs a big punch. The 59th annual Key Colony Beach Day is set for Sunday, March 6. The event is organized by the Key Colony Beach Community Association and many local groups participate including the Key Colony Beach Fishing and Boating Club, the local chapter of Zonta, the pet rescuers, people rescuers and turtle rescuers. It features a running race followed by breakfast, vendors, food, music, a parade, and the ever-popular barracuda and rubber ducky races. “We have such an assortment of vendors this year,” said organizer Jean Hering, adding its about twice the number from 2015. “And lots of vendors are new to the festival this year.” The 5k starts at 8 a.m. from the Key Colony Beach post office (registration is $25 in

The baraccuda races happen most of the day, and betting folk pick the fastest fish (actually a little pilchard racing in a long white tray). The rubber ducky race starts around 3:30 p.m. — a wheelbarrow or two of the plastic toys are dumped on one side of the canal that are helped along with the help of a stream of water pumped from a Marathon firetruck, but more importantly swimmers from the Marathon High School swim team who brave the cold water year after year. And then there’s the food — gourmet popcorn, gourmet pickles and funnel cake and the famous-for-a-reason Irie Island Eats. Key Colony Beach is located oceanside at MM 53.5. omankind has unveiled a program that helps not only pay for tests, but also helps fund treatment if necessary. “We can help up to two hundred women in the Florida Keys this year alone,” said Kim Romano, executive director of Womankind. Free health screenings for breast and cervical cancer — funded by the Center for Disease Control and the Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program — provides free screening for qualified women but more importantly, help with funding treatment if diagnosed. If cancer is detected, then patients will be immediately enrolled with the FBCCED and guided into a special Medicaid program that will fund treatment for up to five years. With today’s Kim Romano health care system still in flux, programs like these are vital to the health of our community, Romano said. The first qualification is that the initial screening take place within the program, either at Womankind in Key West or with

two Keys hospitals — Fishermen’s Community Hospital and Lower Keys Medical Center. After the initial screenings and diagnostics, the hospitals will work with Medicaid and treat the program’s patients. (This is a statewide program and if a patient chooses, she may seek treatment anywhere in the state of Florida.) “Screening is the best protection, but our hope is nobody falls through the cracks afterwards,” said Banwarie, referencing the importance that follow-up treatment be funded as well. Nadyne Fundora, with the FBCCED, will serve as the Keys case manager. She said she hopes that within three days of diagnosis, the patients will be enrolled in the special Medicaid program to cover treatment, chemotherapy and even reconstructive surgery. Before this program, Romano relied on the help of the Zonta Club for providing free screening vouchers and Dr. Michael Klitenick who offered many pro bono services. With the FBCCED program, she said Womankind will offer more security and sustainability to Keys’ women in need and their health care providers. BICYCLE SIT-UPS Lie on the floor. Stretch your legs out straight and hold your arms outstretched at your sides. Place your hands behind your head and raise your legs until thighs are perpendicular to the ground, and calves are parallel to the ground. Keep feet together. Now lift your head up and touch your right elbow to the left knee while pulling your knee up towards your head. At the same time, straighten your right leg, keeping it several inches off of the floor — similar to the motion you'd make while pedaling a bicycle. As you lift your

Don't rest your feet on the ground. Be sure to keep your elbows back, rather than bringing them forward toward your chest, which could strain your neck. Now touch your left elbow to your right knee. At the same time, straighten your left leg, keeping it off of the floor. Don't forget to tighten those abs. — Chris Kuck, Keys Strength and Conditioning, keysstrength@gmail.com

THIS WEEKEND

Runners: It’s time to sign up Sombrero Beach Run set for 10th annual showing By Sara Matthis

N

ow in its 10th year, the Sombrero Beach Run continues to expand into a weekend of healthy activity. It starts with a sign-up on Friday, March 4 night that includes entertainment and beverages; the race and awards party on Saturday, March 5; and a slew of activities

on Sunday, March 6 (see sidebar on opposite page). Last year, there were 547 registered runners ranging in age from 4 years old to 78 years old. “Everybody loves to be at this race and we love having them,” said Race Director Terry Lynn Kelly. “Plus, it supports such a good cause.” The Sombrero Beach Run starts with a 10k that sets off at 8 a.m., followed by a 5k run and walk that begins at 9:15 a.m. Some runners choose to do both and compete in the 15k challenge. Individual sign

ups are $30 or $40 and runners under 18 pay a reduced rate. The prizes are worth running for: cash, stays at area hotels, dolphin dip at Dolphin Research Center, activities at Aquarium Encounters, parasailing trips and more. Plus, race organizers will raffle off the very, very, very last entry for the 7 Mile Bridge Run. The event is a benefit for KAIR (Keys Area Interdenominational Resources), which serves individuals and families in crisis.

Dwayne Ash of Kentucky, left, Jenny Lorenz of Key West and Lisa Kendrick of Marathon finished the 10k one after another in about 50 minutes in 2015.

Want to do even more to support KAIR’s cause? The nonprofit is co-hosting the BlueGrass Barbeque on Sunday, March 6 at 6 p.m. at St. Columba Church. Tickets are $20 each and will be for sale during the weekend race festivities.

Courtney Galantino celebrates her medal-worthy finish in 2015.

Yard sale takes over park ‘Nautical & Knot’ brings droves

T

he Marathon Yacht Club Educational Foundation’s community-wide yard sale took over the Marathon Community Park last Saturday. Dozens of vendors — including the organizers — sold everything from art, to boat bits and pieces, to gently used home goods. The money raised by selling vendor slots, as well as its own booth, will be used to further plans for a summer youth sailing school and scholarships. Next up is the Big Benefit Bash on Sunday, March 6 at 5 p.m. It’s open to members and nonmembers and includes music, dinner and special guest, sailor Nikki Medley. — Weekly Staff report

MMS STUDENT OF THE WEEK Faculty and students at Marathon Middle School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly.

CARLA DECIMUS

Marathon's Favorite Place to Party"

Eighth grade

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS and why are they important to you? I am involved in Relay for Life and basketball. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MMS and why? Mrs. Walker guides me in the right direction. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) prepares you for college and the real world. It helps you achieve your goals. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? My parents didn’t have many opportunities like I do. That’s why they push me to work hard in school. What advice would you give to a sixth grader entering middle school? Every grade counts from middle school through high school. What movie character do you most identify with or would most like to be? Ironman, because he is funny and a little bit cocky but he gets the job done and that sounds like me. If you could advise the President of the United States on one thing, what would it be? I would advise the president that we need more computers and books in our schools. What are your plans after high school? I plan to go to college and become a doctor or a nurse. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to grow up and stop hanging with a bad crowd so that I can succeed.

he springtime Original Marathon Seafood Festival, scheduled Saturday and Sunday, March 12-13, is a taste bud–tempting way to spend a weekend with the family in the Middle Keys. Be sure to bring a bib. In its 40th year, the affordable foodie fair is staged at the outdoor Marathon Community Park, MM 49. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 per adult with children age 12 and under admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Seafood lovers line up for generous plates during the "fisherman to fork" feast as local chefs showcase their talents using Keys-based recipes. Choose from favorite indigenous offerings like mahi-mahi, Key West Pink shrimp, spiny lobster, stone crab claws, crackers piled high with smoked fish dip and much more. Conch is served up as ceviche, chowder, and crammed into golden-fried fritters. Hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages with sides of baked beans, coleslaw, hush puppies and French fries also are on the menu in addition to Key lime pies, baked goods and cakes, cool smoothies and icy treats. Local commercial fishermen and markets catch, clean and

cook the seafood served, and prepare bushels of oysters and bags of clams from the West Coast of Florida. Fishermen and their wives participate alongside scores of community volunteers. Live music performances are slated all weekend in genres ranging from reggae and calypso to trop rock, country, folk and groove. Popular Keys entertainers include The Regs, I-Land Vibe, and the anticipated return of South Florida's country music favorite Amber Leigh. Other attractions at the family-friendly event include a Keys artists' village and art show, children's games, prizes and a raffle that features a fully stocked cooler of fresh Keys seafood awarded to the lucky winner.

More than 200 booths are to dot the park with a variety of nautical items, tropical apparel and accessories, plants, flowers, boats, watersports opportunities and information from Keys organizations. To date festival proceeds have contributed to nearly $80,000 in scholarships for Marathon High School students through the Marathon chapter of the Organized Fishermen of Florida, a statewide group that represents the interests and well being of the commercial fishing industries. Co-sponsored by the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce, the event also helps fund chamber members’ continuing education opportunities.

here’s a little secret on Little Palm. The resort is offering a limited amount of tickets to the “Sandbar Sessions” — a regular concert (and one lecture!) series on the remote island resort in the most intimate and romantic setting imaginable. There are only 40 tickets available to non-guests, for sale on keystix.com. The series began with a one-man concert by John Hiatt on Feb. 25. The concert-trippers were ferried over from Little Torch Key to Little Palm in comfort and then ushered to the resort’s beach with southwest exposure. Comfortable groupings of couches and chairs faced a small, but well-lit stage. “I have more than one of his albums,” confided Melody Dodamead of Marathon. Rich Fielder of Cudjoe Key is also very familiar with his music, once embarking on a special music cruise featuring Hiatt, despite his general abhorrence for such. Hiatt’s career spans decades and the audience was thrilled to have what amounts to a private concert. A talented musician, Hiatt is probably better known for his songwriting and he’s been covered by the likes of Three Dog Night, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Jewel and Keith Urban.

On the Little Palm stage, he opened with a rockin’ “A Real Fine Love,” transitioned smoothly to a bluesy “Like a Freight Train,” then entertained the crowd with “Buffalo River Home.” His voice has character and brings the diverse songwriting and subject matter to life. More than an hour of music flew by as guests sipped cocktails, and indulged in some discreet “chair dancing.” This is the second year of the Sandbar Sessions and Little Palm Resort has five upcoming concerts including the Fabulous Thunderbirds (“Tuff Enough”) and the incomparable guitarist Stanley Jordan. Little Palm has been hosting the Sandbar Sessions for six years. Past performers include American, Keb Mo and Aaron Neville.

and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, "Forum" showcases local actors who are familiar favorites and proudly introduces some brand new talent. The story takes place in ancient Rome. It tells the story of a crafty slave named Pseudolus as he schemes to win his freedom. Fast-paced and witty, "Forum" offers saucy situations, cases of mistaken identity, chase scenes, song and dance. As it's beloved opening song suggests, this show contains "something for everyone; a comedy tonight." John Schaefer, Alistair McArthur and John Pabon spend the most time on stage and their over-the-top antics elicit many giggles and a few guffaws. (CONT.) ence is everything it needs to be — impressive, daunting and slightly mischievous. Michael Chaplin (Senex) and Jimmy Dean (Marcus Lycus) come very close to eclipsing the others, for no other reason than the amount of verve they put into playing “dirty old men.” Jennifer Mixon-Eick is vastly entertaining and so are the courtesans — Kathryn Rummery, Jessica Young, Mindy Kaufman, Trish Hintze, Norma-Jean Nolan and Christine Harrison. Arnie Steinmetz plays his straightman part to perfection and it’s a pleasure to see him take the stage again. The hardest working stage members of the cast, though, are Mary DeMartino, Colby Young and Peyton Young who appear in almost every scene in a variety of guises. The play is directed by Jackie O'Neil, with Cheryl Wilcox as assistant director/ choreographer and Suzanne Terpos as music director. Riet Steinmetz is producer and the stage manager is Christine Leird. "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" runs from March 10 through April 9, with performances at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday, April 3. Tickets are $25. Call the Marathon Community Theatre at 305-743-0994 for tickets and information or visit online at www.marathontheater.org. The theater is located at 5101 Overseas Highway in Marathon, adjacent to the movie theater.

Arnie Steinmetz, left, and Mike Chaplin chat during the break of a recent rehearsal.

The lighthearted flirting between Gymnasia (Trish Hintze) and Pseudolus (John Schaefer) delights.

Alastair McArthur plays the part of Hero with the perfect mix of innocence and lust.

Vibrata (Norma Jean Nolan) puts on an impressive display of acrobatics during one scene.

Mandy Miles signs copies of her latest book detailing common etiquette for island living.

Mandy Miles releases ‘Dos and Don’ts’ … just in time for Spring Break By Kristen Livengood

K

eys Weekly: Hold on, so you really can’t see the lights of Havana from the Southernmost Point at night?! What other good tips can locals learn from the book? Mandy Miles: Yeah, I don’t know where that Havana falsehood started, but it’s persisted forever. Some of the other tips in the book cover things like the correct spelling of Hemingway (one m) and Buffett (two t’s), and a warning against trying to save a parking space. There are also funny etiquette tips whether you’re in a bar, on a boat or behind the wheel. One of my personal favorites says, “Don’t embarrass yourself on a rented scooter … incessant honking makes people not like you.” That one may be particularly appropriate given this week’s arrival of another Spring Break season. Weekly News: Whose beautiful toes grace the front of the book, and where did local photographer Rob O’Neal shoot the cover? MM: Ha! So many people have asked me about those feet, and I so wish they were mine. But no, the feet belong to Jessi O’Neal. She is photographer Rob O’Neal’s sister-in-law,

and was relaxing on a boat near Marvin Key when Rob snapped that stunning photo. Weekly News: What is your number one do or don’t? MM: Hmm, that’s a tough one, but I’d have to say my No. 1 tip is the very first one in the book – “Do…Make yourself at home. As locals, we’re truly glad you’re here, and will do our best to show you a good time.” And that’s true. The vast majority of locals in this town understand the importance of tourism to our island city, and they really do want to make a good impression on our visitors. On the flip side, there are some things visitors can do to ensure they’ll be welcomed back by the locals. (Such as, not requesting “Margaritaville,” the song, unless you’re in Margaritaville, the bar.) Weekly News: Do you know anyone who has been voted off the island? What did they do? MM: This one could get me in trouble, but I think we may all know of a few folks who were formally voted off the island by the court system – and spent some time in enforced exile, whether for illegal substances or public corruption charges. But Key West is often willing to forgive and quick to forget.

Weekly News: This is your third book, along with your compilations of newspaper columns ‘Tan Lines,’ what can fans expect next? MM: Thanks for asking! I’ve actually just started sorting through my most recent “Tan Lines” columns for the next volume. I’ve also started jotting down some notes and ideas for another fun and useful book of tourist tips, but this one with a different and more specific theme. Key West Dos and Don’ts is available online in paperback and Kindle editions at amazon. com, and at Key West Island Books, the Custom House Museum, Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, Last Chance Gifts at Key West International Airport and Boondocks Grill. Mandy Miles is a long-time Keys journalist with the Key West Citizen.

aking their fourth Ocean Key Resort Sunset Pier appearance, Badfish will once again play for a maxed out crowd on the dock in this year’s free concert in Key West. Heralded as one of the country’s best tribute bands, Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime, has become an annual tradition at the resort. “Since 2010, Badfish has always found time to include Key West in their busy touring schedule,” said Rodger Levering, director of food and beverage at Ocean Key Resort, and who helped create the ultra-chic local’s only VIP section in front of the stage for this year. “We are just trying to host a great free concert for the community and we hope everyone has a super time at the Sunset Pier.” Last time Badfish Drummer Scott Begin was in Key West, he was rocking crutches behind the drum set, and is looking forward to the Duval Crawl after the concert Tuesday night. “We typically don’t get a lot of time when we are down in the Keys playing,” he said in a recent phone interview. “But, in the little time we do get, we make the most of it.” The band started playing the Page 31 • Marathon Weekly • March 4, 2016

West Coast 15 years ago while at the University of Rhode Island on the East Coast. “Sublime was the quintessential band we listened to growing up,” said Begin. “Their album ‘Sublime’ served as a sound track for our high school and college years.” The covers started as fun, but escalated quickly from packing fraternity basements to selling out venues in Chicago, New York, New Jersey, and Fort Lauderdale. They’ve even been able to play with Sublime’s drummer Bud Gaugh, who has opened for them in the past. Sublime was a ’90s band, whose front man died of a heroin overdose right before the third self-titled album dropped, and have ska/reggae infused hits like “Santeria,” “Wrong Way,”“What I Got,” and

Begin’s right-now fave “Seed.” “My favorites change from week-to-week,” he said. “But, right now, this one is keeping me on my toes as a drummer,” he said. Badfish stays pretty loyal and faithful to their Sublime roots, but are able to add a little bit of their own personal touch if the occasion calls for it. They have also released some of their own music over the years, but will be playing the all-Sublime set for an hour and 45 minutes starting Tuesday, March 8 at 8:30 p.m. Opening for Badfish on the main stage will be local favorite Patrick and The Swayzees at 7 p.m. and the side stage will be rocking Happy Dog at 1 p.m. and Hot Beer at 5 p.m.

LOCAL’S ONLY VIP SECTION The Badfish concert will host a “Local’s Only” VIP section in front of the stage with private cash bars. Mote Marine will have a check-in table set up at 4 p.m. Each person must present some form of local ID to receive a wristband. There will be a capacity, so check-in early. Keys residents only, guests cannot bring out-of-Monroe County friends. VIP is 21 and older only, the rest of pier is open to everyone.

Marathon Moose Lodge

Brass Monkey By Kristen Livengood

D For more than 55 years, the Marathon Moose Lodge #1058 and the Women of the Moose Chapter #1024 have been a vital part of the community fabric of Marathon. Known mainly as a social and fraternal group, the primary function of the Moose Lodge is community service. The local group is continuously supporting local charities, like Grace Jones Daycare and Heron House. They also support activities like collecting school supplies for Switlik School, Relay for Life and Shopping with a Moose. In addition, the Lodge has conducted numerous fundraisers to assist local families through a tragedy. “We do all these things while trying to maintain a fun and entertaining atmosphere,” said Moose member Harry Wagner. Globally, Moose International is an organization of more than a million members in 1,500 lodges across the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, and Great Britain, each active in similar ways in their own communities. All lodges raise funds to manage and maintain the nationally recognized Mooseheart Child City and School in Illinois and the equally renowned Moosehaven retirement community near Jacksonville. “We are justifiably proud of our work at these two wonderful facilities,” said Wagner. The Moose Lodge welcomes all men and women of Marathon to become members of the Lodge or Chapter and join them in these rewarding endeavors. The Lodge is located at 11601 1st Ave Gulf in Marathon. For more information, call 305-743-4528.

irk was holding a regular drink for this picture, but his favorite drink to shake up for customers is his signature purple hooter shot. “A lot of people just can’t make them right,” he said late at night behind the bar. “And, I love hooters.” His special touch is knowing just the right amount to pour and shake for the vodka and Chambord shot. Dirk’s been making purple hooters for 13 years at the Brass Monkey, minus a short hiatus, after he hitchhiked from Miami to Marathon while following the Grateful Dead tour. He hopped off the tour to make sure he “still had some brain cells left.” He said, “It was the summer of Hurricane Andrew, and I walked from Homestead to Marathon. And, I was hungry and needed a job to pay for some McDonalds.” His claim to fame is the best moon-tan in town, since he usually sleeps during the day or is out chasing down bands at night in his off time. He sees about four concerts a month on the mainland, and his ticket stub collection is rumored to be in the thousands. After all these years, he said he still loves listening to house musician Freddie Bye. And, he said he’s lucky, too, because he found out he does indeed still have some real world functionality left.

In August of last year, the Keys Weekly hit Donavon with some standard questions, so we asked him if it would be cool to loosen things up this go-around. And true to form, the laid back performer did not disappoint — sharing on everything from Bob Dylan to Ben Stiller. — Britt Myers Who would play you [Donavon Frankenreiter] in a movie? I would have to say Ben Stiller because I’ve been surfing with him a couple times and he’s really fun and a great actor. But it would it have to be a comedy. Finish this sentence. My kids have taught me… … how to enjoy the moment. The greatest compliment you’ve received? Whenever people say they admire the way I’m a husband and a father. I think that’s the most important thing in my life. Better for the soul … sex or exercise? I think they’re kind of like, or could be the same thing if done correctly, so both [laughing]. I think they’re both really good for the soul. Best songwriter? There’s so many that it’s hard for me to narrow down, but I really love Bob Dylan. He’s that one guy that I love, love listening to. Guilty pleasure? I live on seven acres in Hawaii and love gardening. But it’s not like a guilty pleasure. If you could tell the presidential candidates one thing it would be… I would tell them it’s probably the most entertaining presidential race I’ve ever witnessed. I’m actually paying more attention to it for the first time in a long time. I feel … that it might be nice to have someone in there who isn’t bought out by either all the pharmaceutical companies or all the lobbyists. … Candidates [are] getting elected and then the only people they answer to are the people who donated money to them. It’s a crazy thing. I really just hope that whoever gets in there makes it right for everybody… beautiful for everybody in America. I remember where I was when I first heard….? I was on a airplane that had a playlists of songs with new artists and pop artists and I remember hearing Norah Jones for the first time when she sang “Come Away With Me” and I was like ‘Oh my God, who is this girl singing?’ And there’s been a million of those moments when you’ve been somewhere and you hear something and it kind of stops you in your tracks. Another one is the first time I heard Stevie Ray Vaughn or Derek Trucks. One of the coolest moments for you as a musician and artist? I’ve got to play with a lot of crazy people but one that stands out is when I played my song “It Don’t Matter” with Graham Nash, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Mike Hamilton and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and that was amazing playing with them live. And I’ve jammed with Warren Haynes, Ben Harper, G-Love and Jack Johnson and all of those guys have been great. I know Warren Haynes has been a big influence on you, when is the last time you saw him? The last time I saw him play was at a beach festival with the Allman Brothers. It’s one of the greatest concerts I’ve seen and the night I got to meet Derek Trucks. I told [Warren] how special the show was and he was just like, ‘yeah, it was alright.’ But that just shows you the perspective and how good he really is because it was literally over the top. … I’ve never heard anybody play guitar better than Derek Trucks. I did a tour with him and Mule one time and Warren brought me into the Gibson factory and told me to pick out a guitar. I was overwhelmed … so I just asked Warren to pick it out. It was 59 Reissue and the greatest gift ever — something I will always cherish because he picked it out. Favorite thing about Key West? I haven’t spent much time there and I hope I get to. But the thing I really admired last time was the drive there and going over those bridges and getting to Key West. I know that sounds completely lame but that was really exciting for me. The last time I was there it was more of a hit-and run situation with the hurricane thing and we had to set up and then take off, so hopefully I get a chance to walk around and do some things this time.

Author Corcoran speaks in Islamorada Hall, Burdette slated for upcoming speaking engagements Contributed om Corcoran, author of the popular Alex Rutledge series of mysteries and the new novel “Crime Almost Pays,” is scheduled to appear at the Islamorada library (MM 81.8) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 10. Corcoran’s appearance is part of a new series of literary conversations, "The Inside Story: Conversations With Notable Keys Authors,” held every Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at the Islamorada Library through March 24. The event is free and open to the public. Corcoran’s Alex Rutledge Series of popular mystery novels are set in Key West. His eighth novel, “Crime Almost Pays,” is a spin-off of that series. The novel features an offbeat pair of private eyes: Dubbie Tanner, a man of substance who used to live in his car, and Wiley Fecko, who once drank and slept in the weeds, are now Southernmost Aristocratic Investigations. The rookie investigators have a case in their tropical in-box, and they are over their heads from the start. Cuban tourism,

island crazies, typical greed, wealthy fathers, good cops, fearful cops, and a car chase all figure in the plot. As in previous Tom Tom Corcoran Corcoran novels, Key West and its characters, history, natural beauty, and isolation play a fundamental role in the story. A photographer and former journalist, Corcoran also created “Key West in Black and White,” a volume of retrospective Key West images; “Triple in Paradise,” a group of three short stories; and “Key West Point of View,” 400 recent color photographs of the island in DVD format. A resident of the Keys for 15 of his 40 years in Florida, Corcoran was an early collaborator with Jimmy Buffett, providing photos for seven albums and CD packages and lyrics for the songs “Fins” and “Cuban Crime of Passion.” In an hour-long conversation, Corcoran will discuss his work, process, and life in the Florida

Keys with journalist Jill Zima Borski. For more information on Corcoran, go to tomcorcoran.net. In coming weeks, James W. Hall explores “The Big Finish,” the latest in his Thorn series of thrillers, on March 17. Culinary crime writer Lucy Burdette, a.k.a. Roberta Isleib, author of the Key West food critic mysteries, talks about her upcoming book, “Killer Takeout,” on March 24. Remaining Schedule March 10: Tom Corcoran March 17: James W. Hall March 24: Lucy Burdette The authors will be available to sign and sell books provided either by themselves or by Islamorada’s Hooked on Books at the event. All the events begin on Thursdays at 6 p.m. and are free and open to the public. or backcountry anglers looking to improve their odds to win cash, trophies and bragging rights for the upcoming Blazing Mako Tournament & Festival in Islamorada, there’s a unique opportunity to add one of the country’s top fly fishermen to their team as an angler. Stu Apte, holder of more than 44 saltwater light tackle and fly rod world records and a recipient of the prestigious Ted Williams Award, has graciously agreed to be auctioned to the highest bidding team. Money raised from the auction will be added to the non-profit tournament’s goal to raise $100,000 for marine sciences scholarships for Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) NSU’s Halmos College of National Sciences and Oceanography. The scholarship funds will be donated through the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF). Teams looking to bid on Stu Apte as a guide for the tournament’s inshore anglers competition can go to www.blazingmako.com. Flying F9F Panther Jets as a Navy pilot during the Korean War, Apte was already an avid fly fisherman. Post war his day job was piloting commercial flights for Pan-Am, but his spare time was building a reputation as a top guide in the Florida Keys. His career as a top-notch angler blossomed, as his Stu Apte Tarpon Fly and Stu Apte Improved Blood Knot became fly fishing standards. In 1969, Apte was inducted into the Fishing Hall of Fame and the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) in 2005, where

Jensen said Apte will also

join with other top local guides to lead a seminar series at Angler House Marina, which will be the venue for inshore boats to launch. The Blazing Mako Tournament & Festival, named for NSU’s mascot—the mako shark—had designated a $2,500 entry fee (three anglers) for inshore competition. Actual true news items! Or, how can anyone make this stuff up?

I

n my distant past as a radio morning show host, I used to do a segment called “News of the Absurd From Around the World.” In that spirit, or perhaps because of the influence of spirits, I am pleased to share with you these allegedly true news items from the past several years. Enjoy! Bill Gates, Cheapskate? According to a published report, Bill Gates was standing in the express checkout line with his quart of ice cream when he discovered that he could not find the 25-cent off coupon for his ice cream. He frantically searched for his coupon as the line progressed closer and closer to the checkout clerk. Unfortunately, he was still unable to find the coupon when it was his turn. However, he was not willing to give up the search, nor his position in line. All the while, he was mumbling that he did indeed have a 25-cent coupon. After Gates held up the line for quite a bit, one of the other patrons slaps a 25-cent piece on the counter, yelling, “Hey, buddy, here's a quarter!” Gates, one of the richest men in the world, took the quarter.

targeting the National Institute of Mental Health for wasting taxpayer money on useless research projects. Here are some examples: • A nine-year study on the sexual behavior of lizards cost $900,000. • A 20-year study of the socalled sexual control center in the brains of gerbils cost over $1,290,000. • A 17-year study of slang terms used by Puerto Ricans in New York City cost $4.7 million. • A five-year study of redwinged blackbirds to determine how humans make choices of mates, dwellings, etc. Cost: $500,000. Entertainment news Dave Davies, the lead guitarist for The Kinks, says he was once contacted by what he calls “spiritual beings” who helped him heal a long-time rift with

his brother, lead singer Ray Davies. Dave says he met the entities in a New Jersey hotel room in June of 1982 when he suddenly felt something that he describes as “a psychic light switch being turned on in my brain.” He says he started hearing five separate voices in his head, each with its own separate smell. He says he had a conversation with the spiritual beings that lasted for six days. Afterwards, he says he finally lost his lifelong resentment for his brother Ray, and became deeply involved in mysticism.

• My wife was nagging me so I had to get her home. • There was a giant dragonfly on my windshield wiper and I was trying to blow it off. • My speedometer doesn't work after I get to 85 MPH, so I don’t know how fast I was going.

• The car makes a funny noise at 85, so I’m just trying to fix it. • My girlfriend is having her period. (?) • And finally, one trooper pulled over a man who he suspected was drinking. When stopped, the man said he was an undercover FBI agent, and had been assigned to see how fast he could drive from Salt Lake City to Seattle.

here’s a little secret on Little Palm.

Sandbar Session Schedule: Monday, March 7: Fabulous Thunderbirds Tuesday, March 22: Stanley Jordan Wednesday, March 30: Eclipse String Quartet Wednesday, April 27: Carpe Diem String Quartet Tuesday, May 17: South Florida Symphony String Quartet Tuesday, May 31: James T. Glassman (lecture)
