hen a 10-yearold boy came into Fishermen’s Hospital Convenient Care Clinic with a sore throat, Nurse Practitioner Shelly Bish took a look in his throat to find a fish bone lodged in the boy’s tonsil. The out-of-towners were looking for a prescription for the sore throat thinking he was coming down with strep, when someone suggested they try the Marathon clinic before heading over to the emergency room. “We have the time to really check the patients out here,” said Bish of the office in the 1st Professional Centre, a block east of McDonalds. “We love being able to treat the community members, and also understand when you come down on vacation, you can’t afford to be sick.” The clinic moved to the more centrally located office about a year ago from its previous spot on Key Colony Beach. “We have been busier since moving to this location,” said Susan Baker, also a nurse practioner. “Plus, the walls are floor to ceiling now, which helps with privacy.” Martha and Harold Grace said that in their 17 years of spending two months every winter in Key Colony Beach, they’ve never needed a doctor until now. “Harold came down with a high fever and we had a choice to go to the E.R. or somewhere else,” said Martha. “Everyone at our condo suggested the walk-in clinic.” After running a couple of tests, the doctors prescribed an antibiotic for Harold’s infection and within three days he was back to himself. “Calling it convenient is an understatment,” said Martha. “They took care of him very professionally, and were nice and very knowledgeable. We would go back in a heartbeat, but hope we can go another 17 years with no issues.”

Both Bish and Baker said the most important part of the practice is being able to educate their patients. “Prevention is the main key,” Bish said of handwashing and avoiding the dreaded cough on plane trips. “The teaching component is a good way to help people maintain their health.” The clinic can see patients for minor emergencies like fish hooks through fingers or school and sports physicals.

They specialize in respiratory infections, pink eye, ear aches and irrigation, stitches for minor lacerations, and rashes. The office is walk-in only and typically does not have a long wait. Office visits start at $75 without insurance. They can also draw blood on site from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., which is convenient if someone is fasting for a blood test. They can be reached at 305-735-4107.

knocked down. “Over the years, the front building apparently functioned as a lot of different things — a museum, a dive shop, a salvage marine store. We even found half of an old campaign sign.

The redevelopment of Coconut Cay will happen in stages. In the first phase, three buildings with eight units each are expected to be complete by late June or early July.

Back in the day, that was acceptable construction material,” said Coconut Cay owner Jim Rhyne, laughing. The demolition begins a project that started more than 10 years ago, but got a major boost in 2011 when Florida Governor Rick Scott awarded the City of Marathon the famous 100 hotel room building rights. Under the terms, Coconut Cay applied for 10 of the Transient Rental Units (TRUs) and Rhyne set to work to find the financing which he secured with BB&T. “We are seeing the fruits of that now with the Holiday Inn Express, Hyatt, Marriott and Singh’s new development on Knights Key,” said Rhyne. “Coconut Cay is just another piece of that puzzle. We are not a big development company or a huge operator — it’s just me and my crew.” The redevelopment of Coconut Cay will happen in stages. In the first phase, three buildings with eight units each are expected to be complete by late June or early July. The standard hotel rooms, however, feature a unique construction. “They are actually metal modular rooms,” said Coral Marine Construction’s George Steinmetz, adding that each building will be delivered on four separate flatbed trucks from a mainland facility, much like modular homes arrive in the Keys in halves. “This type of construction is something new for the Keys.” Each building will be finished with architectural details to complement Keys style. During the second phase of construction, Coconut Cay will develop the part of the property that faces U.S.1, most likely with some one-bedroom suites. The last phase of the project will be built along Aviation Boulevard and feature twobedroom units, Rhyne said. The hotel will continue to operate throughout the redevelopment, Rhyne said, and eventually total 50 units. “My staff and I take a lot of pride in Coconut Cay,” he said. “This is a unique property and we want to keep that flavor in our building design and also room interiors.”

Open Letter to the Residents, Businesses, and City Council Members of the City of Marathon Marathon's affordable housing committee met a few short weeks ago to a packed house. A variety of solutions were discussed and committee members have been tasked to further investigate some of the available programs and options presented at that meeting. Though much time and effort is being expended to come up with solutions to the current need for affordable/workforce housing, it's important to understand that over the next 1-4 years the need will increase dramatically due to a number of factors. Primarily these factors revolve around the re-development of existing, but dormant, hotel / rv parks over the next 1-4 years will increase our need for workforce housing. These dormant rights are now being brought into use again post recession, due to a strengthening Keys tourism economy. Effectively this "new" transient unit creation, primarily hotel rooms, will require MORE WORKFORCE HOUSING, and EXACERBATE THE EXISTING HOUSING CRISIS FURTHER as well as stress our existing workforce housing stock. In fact, there are over 425 "new" hotel rooms anticipated to be re-developed over the next 1-4 years. With new upscale higher end resort style properties requiring more workforce per room (approximately 1 to 1) than more modest mom and pop accommodations (4 to 1), it's easy to anticipate a "new" need of 200-300, or even more, additional employees/ residents that need places to live. Also to be considered is the multiplier effect that all these new residents will create as ancillary businesses ramp up to service this new growth and themselves require more employees. At the present time, there is a little known pool of 100 NEW transient (hotel) rights given to City as a "reward" for completing our central sewer project back in 2012. The effect of letting these units out would be: 1. more crowding on our highways, stores, restaurants, and waterways, 2. MORE COMPETITION FOR OUR EMPLOYEE/WORKFORCE HOUSING STOCK,and 3. more pressure on our infrastructure (sewer, water, electric). GENERALLY, A MORE CROWDED, LESS RESIDENT FRIENDLY, AND A LOWER QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE CITIZENS OF MARATHON. And to what end? Do we need more growth at this point? At the next Marathon City Council meeting scheduled for April 12, 2016 the council will consider a resolution sponsored by Councilperson Michelle Coldiron that would not allow any new transient rights creation in Marathon until the hotel RE-DEVELOPMENT projects that are currently approved and in process are completed and the City has an opportunity to assess their impacts. This is not a moratorium, nor is it a prohibition. This is effectively a "time out", or as has been referred to recently as a "Tactical Pause". To our way of thinking this makes perfect sense. Realizing that Marathon's tourism footprint will already increase by nearly half over the next few years, it only follows that we take time to digest this growth and its impacts prior to committing to more growth. It occurs to many that in the weeks leading up to elections we hear from candidates how they plan to and pledge to fight for residents quality of life in ours small Town. We hear about how the desires of the citizenry should take precedent over big business and developers interests. If you are at all concerned with the path of new growth, or the future quality of life issues affecting you and your families, or the burgeoning affordable housing crisis, we encourage you to attend the next City Council meeting on April 12, 2016 at the Marathon Government Center. Or contact your favorite councilperson and express your thoughts. It is our community and its future that needs to be considered. Sarah Maschal, 38 Why did you start running and how old were you? I started running when I moved to the Keys when I was 23. I didn’t make a lot of money, and running was free. I’ve ran the bridge probably 12 times. What’s your training regimen like? How many miles do you log every week? I log between 0-30 miles a week. It is all dependent on how many excuses I can come up with why I just can’t seem to fit running in my schedule. What are your best times? Those don’t really exist anymore. I haven’t seen a best time since I was 25.

Marathon High School Teacher What’s going through your mind when you race the bridge? Pre Race: I hope I trained enough for this. What running mix should I listen to? Was that the gun? Did the race start? Mile 1: Yep, people are moving, there are so many people. The bridge is shaking! Don’t trip. Did I start out too fast? Too slow? It’s only been one mile! Mile 2: It’s hot out. I should have brought a water bottle. No, then I would have to carry it. Where is the water station? Mile 3: Oh look, there is my friend. How is she running so fast? I should train with her. She has such a cute outfit on, I should get more cute outfits. She looks like a weightless gazelle, I feel like an awkward elephant. I should have trained more. Mile 4: It’s sooo hot. I can’t wait to run through the shower thingy. Someone already finished? How do they run so fast? I wonder where my fast friend is, I really should train with her... Mile 5: I’m almost done. Mile 6: Should I start sprinting? Oh, people are passing me, I should start sprinting. Finish line: Thank goodness that is over. I don’t think I will do this race again. This bottle of water is the best thing ever. OK, I’ll do it again next year. Where is the beer? What’s your favorite aspect of the 7 Mile Bridge Run? Besides the finish? I also enjoy running over the hump and seeing the swarm of runners. It’s exciting knowing there are only a limited amount of people each year who get to race this span. Besides the 7 Mile Bridge run, what are some of your other favorite races? Another favorite race of mine is the Keys 100, it’s such a bonding experience with your team. And, I am a sucker for any themed race, especially if it includes a tutu. Do you have any inspirational thoughts for other runners? Move your legs faster than the other runners.

The 35th annual 7 Mile Bridge Run starts at 7 a.m. sharp on Saturday. Scores of volunteers, more than 1,000 athletes and dozens of beer-handeroutters are ready for the challenge. The racers cross the bridge from East to West, where they are picked up by a swarm of yellow school buses for the return trip to Marathon. Post-race festivities take place on Knights Key.

The Seven Mile Bridge Run will shut down traffic both north and south for two and a half hours at the Seven Mile Bridge. Travelers should plan to be across the bridge by 6:30 a.m. to avoid being stuck on one side or the other. Traffic flow will resume at 9 a.m., but usually takes at least an hour after that to get back to normal flow. Page 6 • Upper Keys Weekly • April 8, 2016

(CONT.)

Francisco Cook Ramirez, 25 Why did you start running and how old were you? I started running when I was in 7th grade in Jacksonville. But I didn’t start running seriously until my junior year of high school. I ran the Bob Hayes Track and Field Invitational and finished third place overall. What’s your training regimen like? How many miles do you log every week? I run three or four miles every day except Sunday. If I have to work in the morning, sometimes I’ll run at midnight or sometimes at sunrise. What are your best times? My best time in a 5k is 17:04. My second half marathon I dropped my time to 1:34. What’s going through your mind when you race the bridge? This is the first time I’ve ever participated in the 7 Mile Bridge Run. I missed the last two registrations and am so excited to do it this year. I just turned 25 so I am in a new division. I hope to win and especially be the first young Latino to win.

FKEC Rate & Budget Analyst

Marathon's Favorite Place to Party" What’s your racing strategy? I watch the other runners; I am the cat that chases the mouse. Do you have any rituals before and/or after races? I go for a short two-mile run before the race to warm up and then I stretch. I drink some water and then I’m ready. After the race, I eat a Big John’s Pizza and drink a beer. [Francisco works at the Key West pizzeria and the business sponsors most of his entry fees.]

Besides the 7 Mile Bridge run, what are some of your other favorite races? I like the Halloween Half Marathon and the themed runs in Key West. And I like the Christina’s Courage 5k because it’s at the golf course. Do you have any inspirational thoughts for other runners? Choose your favorite music, drink some water, and go for a little slow run. That’s how you start. And just forget about your watch and try to run your best

Ray Rhash, 55

Why did you start running and how old were you? I’ve always run, but I am not a runner per se. I do CrossFit very regularly, however, at the I AM CrossFit center in the Upper Keys. What’s your training regimen like? How many miles do you log every week? Well, right now I have an eye injury so I am not doing any running because the jarring motion is bad for the condition. But if I were training, I would probably do a couple of long-distance runs, a couple of 10ks, in preparation. Physically and aerobically, I am already in shape to run that distance, I would just want to prepare my legs for the pounding they are going to take on the bridge run. What are your best times? Well, I used to run a 10k in about an hour, but last year I did the 7 Mile Bridge Run in Page 7 • Marathon Weekly • April 8, 2016

58 minutes. I run less now and my times are better because of CrossFit. I ran the Christina’s Courage 5k race in 23:30 and the Founders Park New Year’s race in 25:02. Do you have a race strategy? I try to start off slow and sped up towards the end.

Do you have any rituals before and/or after races I am not going to eat anything before the race because it’s so early in the morning. Career and Technical Center is named after him: “Pop’s Place.” A devoted fan, he was a frequent spectator cheering student athletes on at events. “We are really hoping to get a lot of community support out this year to cheer on the 16 teams,” said tournament organizer Bambi Kuck. “The concession stands will sell pork sandwiches – meat donated from Brutus Seafood – and other things like hot dogs and hamburgers, and cold beverages.” The two-day event, April 1617, will culminate Sunday afternoon at Marathon Community Park with the top two teams batting for first place. New this year is a Homerun Derby on Friday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Marathon Community Park. Any batter or pitcher already on a team can kick in an extra $30 to compete. There will be a DJ spinning tunes that night, and the winners will walk away with a cash prize. “So far, 15 people have signed up for the Derby,” said Kuck. Marathon High School seniors can find the application for the scholarship in the CAPS office, or online at popsstiglitzscholarship.com. The application — including 250-word essay on how to give back to the community — is due by May 13.

CHALLENGE

For Marathon eyes only! Water challenge pits residents of Key West and Marathon against one another By Jason Koler Michigan vs. Ohio State. U.S. vs. Russia. Bird vs. Johnson. Marathon vs. Key West.

T

he bitter rivalry between Key West and Marathon was renewed this week when the mayors of the perspective municipalities signed the 6th National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. According to a release from the Florida Keys Aquaduct Authority, Mayor Craig Cates and Mayor Mark Senmartin are joining mayors across the country in asking residents to make a commitment to conserve water and cut pollution by taking part in a contest designed to slash water and energy use. In return, residents in those

cities can win a new Toyota Prius, water saving fixtures, and hundreds of other prizes. “The challenge demonstrates that not only do Marathon residents recognize the need to maintain and restore the ideal water quality for a healthier ecosystem, but that they are also actively engaging in the protection of our water supply and thus working towards a greener and healthier Mara-

thon,” said Senmartin. The movement is gaining momentum and is likely to throw an even greater divide between the two municipalities who have long struggled with each other over building rights, football games and tourist development dollars. To participate, residents of Key West and Marathon can register online via mywaterpledge.com or Facebook, and then make a series of online pledges to conserve water on behalf of their city throughout the month of April. Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category are entered into drawings for hundreds of eco-friendly prizes, including home improvement gift cards, home irrigation equipment, and the grand prize, a Toyota Prius.

Relay raises funds The American Cancer Society Relay For Life took place last weekend in the Middle Keys. Hundreds of locals walked all night — and danced and exercised — to raise funds to fight cancer. Here, the local organizers take the stage at the Marathon Community Park’s amphitheater to recognize not only those that have fallen, but those who continue to fight.

Nelson (Buddy) Mellette was born on September 23, 1936 in Ormond Beach, Florida and died on March 3, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with cancer at his home in Marathon, Florida. Buddy is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Jo Ann Mellette, brother Vernon Mellette, daughter Faith Bard (Craig), granddaughter Kimberly and several nieces and nephews. A workout buddy is hugely helpful for keeping motivated. For one, adding that social component is enough to make most people say “yes” over “no” to exercise. Second, if you work out with a partner, chances are you will work harder, too. For those that want to challenge themselves, they should pair up with someone who is more fit. There are plenty of partner exercises beyond running next to one another or choosing side-by-side exercise bikes. For example, there’s the situp pass or a “wall” sit where partners are back-to-back for support. — Sara Matthis, Keys Weekly Page 16 • Upper Keys Weekly • April 8, 2016

Latin band plays Marathon By Sara Matthis

T

he Mojito Band from Key West is coming to Marathon this weekend. Although it’s billed as a “salsa” band, in reality the quartet will play every single type of Latin music.

“We play Cuban music, Puerto Rican music, Colombian, Dominican,” said bandleader Rolando Rojas. “We do it all.” Rojas said the plan is to play a mix of classics and contemporary numbers ranging from Celia Cruz to Marc Anthony. The foursome have been playing together for about six years now, Rojas said. They are Ken Fradley (trumpet and

flugelhorn), Luis Vera (drums), Roy Chavez (congas) and Rojas (keyboard/guitar). The group play regularly at places such as Sloppy Joe’s and El Meson de Pepe in Key West and also make up part of the big ensemble band, Caribe. Mojito will play three sets beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 at Marathon Community Park. Admission is free.

The future’s too bright (wear shades) In the Florida Keys, sunglasses are a fashion accessory worn daily. And you can never have too many pairs. All that wear makes them easy to lose, scratch, and break — making sunglasses a purchase made multiple times throughout year. According to the market research group NPD, women spent $1.85 billion on sunglasses from June 2014 to June 2015. That’s a lot of eyewear. To help you find the most flattering shades for your summer wardrobe, take a look below at some tips before your next purchase.

SHAPE Sunglasses come in many shapes but are not a one-size-fits-all accessory. The first step in finding your most flattering frames starts with analyzing the shape of your face. • Round: A round face is widest across the cheekbones. Rectangular and geometric shapes will help elongate your face. Styles to try: oversized, rectangular, cat eye. • Square: If your face is square with a strong jaw, wide forehead and wide cheekbones, soften your features with rimless shades or curvier frames. Styles to try: Aviators, round, cat eye. • Heart: If you have a broad brow and narrow chin, try a style that is wider on the top than the bottom. Shapes that extend past the width of your face will complement you. Styles to try: rectangular, aviators, sport, retro square. • Oval: Oval shaped faces are longer than they are wide. This face shape allows for more flexibility letting you wear pretty much any style you want. Styles to try: rectangular, oversized, round. TINT We all know how important sun protection is for our skin but have you thought about protecting your eyes? Sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory; they are also meant to protect your eyes. Make sure the pair you wear provide 98 to 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. If the label reads “UV absorbing” or “blocks most UV light,” you are not providing enough sun protection for your eyes.

These Michael Kors retro style glasses are available at the Optical Shoppe in Marathon.

• Gradient – These ombre tinted shades are perfect for combating overhead rays during peek daylight hours. • Mirrored – These lenses boast increased protection by blocking out more light than other tints. • Polarized – If you spend a lot of time on the water or outdoors, these are perfect for you as they reduce glare. • Tinted – Darker hues are best for bright and sunny weather like we have in the Florida Keys. COLOR Whether you are all about classic black or prefer leopard print with gold embellishments, the range of color and patterns available for your shades are endless. So if you find a pair you love, better buy two. Make that three – one in each color, of course. Look for your next pair of sunglasses at Tropical Optical at 81933 Overseas Highway in Islamorada or the Optical Shoppe at 2357 Overseas Highway in Marathon for the latest selection of designer eyewear.

MMS STUDENT OF THE WEEK Faculty and students at Marathon Middle School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Marathon Weekly.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS and why are they important to you? At this moment I am not involved in any organizations or activities besides the band concerts because I am in beginning band.

To our BUYERS and SELLERS. We hope you enjoy your new homes.

Lynn B. Lucas, P.A. - Represented the Buyers of 516 88th Street Ocean, Marathon

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Math is the class that I think has best prepared me for life after high school because you need math to count your money and use math your whole life. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? My parents didn’t have much technology so I think it was harder. What advice would you give to a sixth grader entering middle school? I would tell them not to worry, but to pay attention. Listen to the teachers and respect them. Also do you work and you’ll be fine. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenges facing the Keys are kids not going to school and children not paying attention in school. I would help kids. What are your plans after high school? My plan after high school is to go to college and get a successful job. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to work hard because I want to be successful and I want to be a hard worker.

(for Steak and Seafood) Marty shows off a Funky Buddha More Moro Blood Orange IPA at Herbie’s.

Herbie’s Bar and Chowder House By Kristen Livengood

W

ith 24 beers on tap, bartender Marty Bergin at Herbie’s Bar and Chowder House said his favorite draft right now is the Funky Buddha More Moro Blood Orange IPA. The moro is a blood orange with a deep, crimson flesh and mellow citrus flavor. The IPA is 7.7 percent alcohol by volume and has a ripe, orange flavor. Sixteen ounces of the stuff costs $6. “We go through a lot of beers here,” said Bergin, who’s been at Herbie’s for the past six months. “This one has my favorite flavor right now.” Bergin said the beer pairs best with their conch ceviche. “The citruses really play well off each other,” he said. After moving from North Carolina six years ago, he found his second home. “When I’m not here, people know what I am doing,” he said, pausing to find exactly the right words. “I’m probably shooting pool at the Monkey.” Herbie’s Bar and Chowder House is located at 6350 Overseas Hwy., Marathon. It’s open Wednesday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

KEYS DISEASE

Workforce Housing — our islands in crisis mode Lots of contributing factors; few real solutions

I

t’s hard to go anywhere around the Keys without hearing people speak of our affordable workforce housing crisis. From local workers who are being priced out of our islands by increasing rents, to others who are being kicked out of their homes as properties are converted to vacation rentals, to local employers who lose employees because they can’t find a place to live — this problem affects all of us. And while there are a number of contributing factors, real solutions to the problem are elusive. A recent published report highlighted actions being taken by some longtime locals who face this issue, and are looking for the Marathon City Council to provide solutions. A couple of quotes from this article: “I think the City Council is all for themselves as long as they can make a buck,” and “Everyone’s greedy here, especially the City Council.” Here’s the part of the story that was left out of that somewhat one-sided article. In 2014, the Marathon City Council established a Workforce Housing Task Force; Monroe County established a similar working group around the same time. The city’s task force contracted with Florida International University to research the crisis and create a report outlining the problems and potential solutions. Some of the document’s findings are interesting and very revealing about the different factors contributing to this crisis — and illuminating as to how many of them are outside the city’s and the county’s control.

One of those factors is the escalating costs of flood and windstorm insurance, both outside the city’s and county’s control. These costs have risen exponentially over the past several years, and landlords have to pass along those costs to local renters. Many property owners pay more for insurance than they are paying for the principal and interest charges on their mortgages! Relief from windstorm increases has to come from the State of Florida; the federal government controls flood insurance nationwide. Vacation rentals are often cited as a problem, and they do have an impact — although they are a smaller part of the problem than people realize. First, the Florida Legislature passed a law a few sessions ago that totally eliminated all restrictions on the length of time a home or property can be rented, but did grandfather in

existing rental restrictions. They also made it so that if a local government (like the Marathon City Council) changed or amended its rental law, then it would immediately be rendered null and void, and there would be no restrictions left in place. One-night rentals would be legal and unstoppable. The city worked with the Florida League of Cities to try and get our home rule power over vacation rentals back under local control, but the Legislature didn’t do anything with it this past session. We will try again next year. In Marathon, there are over 580 licensed vacation rentals. But there are over 2,200 homes and other residential units that are owned by people who live out-of-town and do not rent them to anyone. The owners bought them so that they would have a seasonal or vacation home for a few weeks

each year, and don’t rent them to locals or turn them into vacation rentals at all. There are significant and real property rights issues that affect local housing units. And there’s nothing the City Council can do about that. A great deal of that problem can be attributed to rising property values over the past 20 years. When banks and mort-

gage companies were actually writing loans for $350,000 dry lot trailers (!), a lot of longtime locals saw dollar signs and cashed out, leaving the Keys with their windfalls. Homes that used to house local residents now sit vacant, save for the few weeks each year when the owners come down to the Keys.

To our BUYERS and SELLERS. We hope you enjoy your new homes.

rt, food, live music, classic cars and much more will mark the 25th anniversary of Florida Keys Island Fest on Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10. The annual rite of spring, organized by the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at Founders Park, MM 87 bayside. The two-day Island Fest arts and crafts show will feature approximately 100 artists whose work includes everything from paintings and sculptures to jewelry to fine crafts. Honored as the poster artist this year is Key West tropical impressionist painter Amanda Johnson, who made use of a pallet knife to create her thickly-textured oil on canvas cover poster “Tarpon Leap.” The texture creates a sense of motion that makes Johnson’s depiction of an airborne, hooked tarpon feel especially action packed. “It captures the drama and the action of the sport of fishing,” Johnson said. “The technique is done very intuitively.” Great food is a mainstay of Island Fest and this year will be no different. Sunday in particular will bring an extra dose of mouthwatering options thanks to the delicious “Taste of Islamorada” competition, showcasing the dishes of many local restaurants. Back for its sixth year at Island Fest is the All-American Road Vintage Cruisers Car Show, featuring antique cars, trucks, motorcycles and rat rods. The show will be visible from U.S.1, Florida’s only official “All American Road,” so passersby with an interest in antique and unique cars are likely to stop for a look. Awards will be presented for Coolest Cruiser, Raddest Rod, KeyZ Rider, Longest Haul, Big Kahuna, Funkiest Foreign, Best of Show and People’s Choice.

David Feder will play his unique ‘hillbilly flamenco’ style music.

An array of popular musical acts appealing to lovers of numerous genres will perform throughout both days of Island Fest. Among the performers will be Miami’s Pit Bull of Blues and Islamorada singer/songwriter Dave Feder, who will perform

in his unique hillbilly flamenco style. Island Fest will have plenty of activities for kids as well. They can help paint a life-sized dolphin statue, build sand castles and compete in hula hoop contests. In addition, teams will compete on Saturday to create the word “Sunset” out of colorful sand on the beach. Returning on Saturday for a second year is the “What Floats Your Boat?” homemade boat race. Participants will create a “boat” to enter in the race, which will begin at 1 p.m. There is no entry fee and the Chamber is currently seeking entries. Winners will be declared for the Yachtiest Award, Thriftiest Award, Anchor Award, Krazy Krewe Award and Sink and Swim Award. The big winner will be presented with the Lucky Ducky Admiral Award. Admission to Island Fest is free and on-site parking inside Founders Park is available for a $5 donation. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets for a comfortable fun-filled day. Events will take place rain or shine. For more information, call the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce at 305.664.4503.

The kids will have a chance to do some hands-on activities.
