Recognize this face? Probably not. Bill Hoebee is possibly the most famous local ‘celebrity’ in the Keys, but most of his fans are familiar with the sound of his voice coming over the airwaves. See the story on Page 11. Photo by AUSTIN COIT/austincoit.com.

LOCAL CHATTER By Hays Blinckmann One of the most delicious fundraisers in town takes place this weekend, the annual Willy Wonka Chocolate Festival at the Southernmost House benefiting the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. (See page 7). But Willy Wonka, the movie, is about so much more than chocolate, a parody of either bad or good behavior. So we asked locals …

Everyone wants to know where the locals eat… VOTED BEST PIZZA, BEST LUNCH, BEST FISH SANDWICH & BEST FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS

Which character do you resemble in ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’? Cali Roberts, assistant director of Womankind, identifies with Charlie. “Because he was hopeful and tried to do the right thing and loves his family,” she said.

Lara Casa said she shares character traits with the hero. “I have to say Charlie — he didn’t realize what he had gotten into, kind of like me.”

Tania Cole, manager of Blue Boutique, said she’s like Charlie, of course. “But I want to be like Veruca Salt and say, ‘I want a golden goose — and I want it NOW daddy!’”

A conversation with Dr. Aydin Atilla, ER Director Key West doctor defends health care at Lower Keys Medical By Hays Blinckmann

L

ast month, at a contentious district hospital board meeting, Dr. Aydin Atilla, medical director of the Lower Keys Medical Center Emergency Room, was thrust into the spotlight and challenged on the care being provided in the ER. At the meeting, a handful of individuals asserted that Dr. Atilla yielded an untenable amount of power in the ER. They claimed the needs of patients were either not being met, or were secondary, to other motives and agendas. By now, many in the community have either read or heard versions of those assertions in an online open letter, which was subsequently published in other media outlets. But Dr. Atilla argues that the grumblings of a few individuals, possibly with ulterior motives, were represented as though it was the opinion of the Key West community as a whole. However, when the Keys Weekly reached out to Dr. Atilla for a response to some of the disparaging accusations, we were surprised to learn that he was (as of presstime) never approached for comment by any other media sources. According to Dr. Atilla, many of the public accusations came without specific facts or the full corroborating accounts of all witnesses, which he said left him frustrated and disheartened. Sitting down with Dr. Atilla provided a different depiction of how healthcare is administered

at Lower Keys Medical Center’s ER. For starters, Dr. Atilla said, he challenges anyone who questions his passion for administering healthcare, along with many of the staff members at the hospital, by simply exploring the other side of the story. “There are more than 50 physicians working hard everyday — from surgeons, internists, sub-specialists, nurses and-mid level providers,” said Dr. Atilla. “They don’t deserve this. Claiming the hospital is corrupt, just because several patients were disappointed, is a horrifying statement.” According to Dr. Atilla, the LKMC emergency room treated more than 22,000 patients last year and only received 40 complaints about service. During that time, he said the facility has become more observant to ER guidelines — particularly wait times. For example, those with chest pain must be attended to within 30 minutes and standard visits must be evaluated and admitted within 240 minutes. “Whether insured or uninsured, care is being provided following strict guidelines and benchmarks,” Dr. Atilla said. Another accusation made against Dr. Atilla, made by another doctor, asserted that ER physicians are not communicating with patients’ primary care doctors. But Dr. Atilla explained that an ER physician’s mission is different than a primary care physician’s. ER doctors are trained to assess and evaluate immediate care for the patient.

“If presenting symptoms of a heart attack, an ER doctor would consult a cardiologist — not the primary care doctor. One claim against the hospital at the district meeting was that the primary care doctor is not being contacted,” said Dr. Atilla. “There’s no law that says we have to call the primary care physician [when a patient arrives at the ER], but we always strive to do so.” As director, Dr. Atilla said he acts as an ER manager over other doctors. He is on call 15 days a month, on average, and said he usually receives 15 to 25 phone calls a night. He evaluates patient complaints, assesses doctors’ performances and provides additional feedback to improve the care when needed. He also added that ER doctors are independent contractors at LKMC, and his role as manager means he’s often relegated to the role of facilitator, rather than having direct control over the doctors’ fulfillment of his or her duties. “In that regard, being director doesn’t give you any power at

Never, in four years, have I ever abused my role at the ER to promote my own private practice. —Dr. Atilla

all,” said Dr. Atilla. Contrary to a published letter sent to Governor Rick Scott from former Key West City Commissioner Harry Bethel, Dr. Atilla stated that once patients are released from the ER, they are told to contact their primary doctors for further treatment. “Primary care physicians should be at the helm of a patient’s health care,” said Dr. Atilla. “Never, in four years, have I ever abused my role at the ER to promote my own private practice. My practice is full and I am not accepting new patients. In fact, we need more primary care physicians in the Keys because practices are already overtaxed with too many patients.” Dr. Atilla said that with today’s changing healthcare landscape, the Lower Keys Medical Center is challenged with meeting not only healthcare needs of its patients, but also the financial shortages. He said 40 percent of LKMC ER patients do not have health insurance, resulting in $2 million in unfunded care. “Everyone — patient, to doctor, to the hospital — is caught in the tug of war of the overall health care system,” said Dr. Atilla. “But the Lower Keys Medical Center is providing dedicated care to our community.” Dr. Atilla told the Keys Weekly that he wanted to express his views, not necessarily for closure, but for clarity — and hopefully to allow for future discussions that include “transparency and fairness.” The Keys Weekly will continue to monitor this story and welcomes any comments or questions. Hometown PAC calls on candidates Meet and greet filled with those vying for seats By Kristen Livengood

T

his past Monday, about 45 candidates vying for local, state, and federal votes this fall came out to meet the community and offer their stances at Hometown PAC’s Call to Candidates event. Hometown PAC aims to be a resource for the voting com-

munity and provides events for prospective and incumbent candidates to make their views known, such as meet-andgreets and political forums. “I am extremely happy with the turnout,” said PAC Chairman Todd German. “This was the biggest turnout we’ve had to date.” With the 2016 presidential election, Joyce Griffin, Supervisor of Elections told the 300 attendees that she expects an 80 percent turnout for the November election. She also said she thinks the ballots will pull

high numbers for the August elections and mentioned that voters have 29 days before the election to change parties. Griffin, a Democrat, is finishing her first term as Monroe County’s Supervisor of Elections and is currently unopposed. Key West was introduced to two U.S. Senate candidates, Pam Keith and Anton “Tony” Khoury, who made the trip to Key West for the event. “This is the first time Senate hopefuls have shown up for Hometown PAC,” German said. “It’s a big deal.” District 39 State Senator hopefuls Anitere Flores, Daniel Horton, and Andrew Korge were also on hand to meet and greet interested locals at the event, along with congressional hopefuls Joe Garcia, Jose Peixoto, and Annette Taddeo. State Representative for District 120 Holly Raschein spoke at the event with opponents Artie Leichner and Kevin Diaz. Locally, several open seats brought out candidates in races for Monroe County Commission, Key West Commission, Monroe County School Board, Mosquito Control, Key West Utility Board, Clerk of Court, State Attorney and Public Defender. The next Hometown PAC event will be June 24 at 5 p.m. at Studios of Key West. “It’s an important event because candidates have to qualify by noon that day, so this will be a good event to meet them all,” said German.

In a benefit for the Conch Republic Foster Children’s Fund, the Royal Investiture Party to elect a Royal Family of the Conch Republic will be held on Saturday, April 23 starting at 8 p.m. at Rick’s and Durty Harry’s at 202 Duval St., Key West. These funds are raised each year to pay for special items for foster children in Monroe County not covered by state dollars. No funds are used for administrative expenses. Royal titles include Queen, Royal Banker, Royal Bartender, Royal Attorney, or Royal Realtor

— or participants can create their own title. Any silly or serious rank or position is acceptable except king, because Mel Fisher forever holds the title. There can only be one Queen of the Conch Republic, so the candidate earning the most votes will assume the title of Queen. This is a chocolate lover’s dream Annual Willie Wonka event benefits local cancer patients By Kristen Livengood

C

andy, chocolate, Mattheessen’s cookies, cakes, pies, brownies, fountains filled with melted chocolate… the menu at the 14th annual Michelle’s Willie Wonka Chocolate Festival taking place on Sunday, April 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Southernmost House in Key West is never-ending. Raising thousands of dollars for Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys, the event is named in part after the name synonymous with candy, Willie Wonka, and shares the title with Michelle Halpern, the founder of the event who died of cancer in 2012. “The first year, 14 years ago, we had about 200 people and raised $2,000,” said event cofounder attorney Michael Halp-

ern, Michelle’s late husband and co-owner of Southernmost House. “The past few years, the event has raised more than $50,000 a year for the foundation.” For the price of a $10 ticket, kids’ (and adults’) eyes light up when they walk into Willie Wonka’s Key West house with rows and rows of delightful goodies to choose from, all donated from local restaurants and businesses for the event. “Every penny we raise goes to the charity,” Halpern said. Fourteen years ago, Michelle with the help of Michael and their three sons, started the event to help local non-profits before the reins were handed over to Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. “Every year the event just keeps getting bigger and better,” said volunteer Doria Goodrich, who has been with

the event since its inception. According to Goodrich, a member of the all-volunteer Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys, which supports patients from Key Largo to Key West, the Willie Wonka event is the biggest fundraiser of the year. “We support anywhere from 20 local patients a year with help with their cancer treatments,” she said. “No one should have to blow every penny they’ve ever made just to stay alive.” Just in case chocolate and candy isn’t your thing — there’s pretzels, and hot dogs, and live entertainment, and a balloon man, and a beautiful view of the ocean at one of the most iconic houses in town. It has all the ingredients for a perfect afternoon in the Keys while supporting local cancer patients. Southernmost House is located at 1400 Duval St., Key West.

ans of “The Band” take note: singer and musician Amy Helm and her band The Handsome Strangers are set to debut her roots-rock vibe album “Didn’t It Rain.” Her tour is rambling down to Key West for an outdoor evening concert on Saturday, April 16, at Fort East Martello as part of the “Music at Martello” series. "I'm just trying to tell some stories as honestly as I can," Amy Helm says of “Didn't It Rain,” her first solo album. The daughter of drummer and vocalist Levon Helm of The Band and acclaimed singersongwriter Libby Titus (who has

penned compositions for Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, and Bonnie Raitt), and stepdaughter of Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, Helm has learned her chops from the best. She’s garnered widespread praise as a singer, songwriter and live performer with an agile voice that moves between gospel, country, folk, and blues. “When we first learned of the opportunity to bring down Amy Helm, we jumped right on it,” says Key West Concerts co-producer Evan Haskell. “She is steeped in the American musical tradition and brings along some of the best players with her.” Helm and her band The

Handsome Strangers — bassist Jacob Silver, guitarist Adam Minkoff, and drummer David Berger — will take the stage as part of Key West Art & Historical Society’s “Music at Martello Series.” Doors open at 4:45 p.m. with an opening act at 5:45; Helm takes the stage at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 at www. keywestconcerts.com or $25 at the door; Key West Art & Historical Society members can call 305.295.6616, Ext. 106 for discounted tickets. Children under 12 admitted free. Parking will be available for $5, bike parking is free.

LOCAL PROFILE Lover of sarcasm, cake and Ernest Goes to Camp By Hays Blinckmann

N

ew Jersey native and TV/ radio host, Bill Hoebee ended up in the Keys like the rest of us — because no one else would take him. Okay, that’s only a half truth, but he’s ours now, for better and/or worse. Today Bill Hoebee just might be the most recognized celebrity in the Florida Keys. In fact, he has been nominated for “Best Local Celebrity” for two consecutive years at “The Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards” and he receives rock star treatment at just about every establishment (mainly bars)

that he frequents. But there is just something about Bill Hoebee that affords him the liberty to say (and do) just about anything on the airwaves. With puerile charm and “radio good looks,” Hoebee commands a dominating stranglehold on the radio ratings; imparting wisdom, fraternity humor and pop culture sarcasm as effortlessly as Tony Soprano consumes fagoule. From a successful stint with an ’80s hair band to hobnobbing with celebrities around the country, Bill Hoebee never takes himself too seriously, which is perhaps his recipe for such broad appeal. His heart remains on the microphone — talking and laughing with his younger sidekicks: The Bird and Mel T. With more than 100,000 listeners on his iHeartRadio show, along with listeners from Miami to Key West and the countless articles he has written and published around the globe, Bill Hoebee remains,

well … Bill Hoebee. And there is only one Bill Hoebee to go around. (Unless you ask him nicely; he might go twice.) But for those who know him outside of the radio sphere of quick-witted jokes and antidotes, there is another side of Keys radio’s favorite smartass. It’s his alter ego, or the “real” Bill Hoebee, to some extent. That is a man who would stick his neck out for anyone he calls a friend, a man loyal to his trade no matter what the cost, and a man who loves nothing more than making others smile for a few extra hours each day. (Editor’s note: we expect Hoebee to blast us over the airwaves for having outed his sensitive nature.) 1. Middle name? Scott 2. Worst nickname? Hoebee-wan Kenobi, Hoebee Cat 3. Rather be a man or a woman? Man, ’cause I love women. Women are smarter, so I‘d rather take advice from women.

Hoebee 4. Who is your celebrity crush and why? Jennifer Aniston, insanely rich and pretty. 5. Pet peeve? When people ask me to say something funny. Shut up. Is that funny? 6. What are you scared of? Snakes, witches and ex-wives. 7. Which TV character is your alter ego? Gary Shandling, rest in peace you crazy $*@*. 8. Who would you refuse on your show? Can’t refuse anyone, but will kick them off. 9. Who would you love to have on your show? The Ramones. 10. If invisible, what would you do? Point 5 is a 10! The vegan tacos feature nuts, avocado and romaine leaf ‘shells.’

Upstairs tapas spot hits the mark By Chance Parker

P

oint 5, directly upstairs from local culinary landmark 915, has some of the best views, and best bites, to be had on all of Duval. Situated right in the sweet spot, just north of Truman, you will get all the people watching variety to be found, without all the commotion of lower addresses. Craft cocktails, tapas-style dishes (often quite healthy), fine wines, great beers, all in a relaxed, urban-feeling atmosphere; I am looking for a negative, and haven’t found one yet. The amazing cocktails bear separate mention. One of our favorites was the 915 Cocktail, which had a slight spiciness from its St. George Chili Vodka base, balanced perfectly with sweet Prickly Pear Liqueur and Agave Nectar, and tart lime. Also popular was the Andrew’s Manhattan Fashion, served to us by executive bartender, Andrew, himself. This combination of classics — Manhattan and Old Fashioned — will delight any bourbon lover. The wine list, all by-the-glass, is small but surprisingly diverse. Many of the great appellations of the world are represented, including Champagne, Sancerre, Tavel, Rhone, and much of Spain and California. As previously mentioned, several options are not only tasty, but health-conscious. My personal favorite, the Home-

made Butternut Squash Ravioli, was unbelievably rich and creamy for a vegetarian dish. It’s paired with CHANCE an insanely PARKER flavorful originally hails Parmesan from Texas, and is Amaretto currently the wine Cream director at Prime Steakhouse in Sauce. Key West. Drizzle on a little sweetand-sour, and be amazed by the complexity of this guilt-free treat.

If you are in a more indulgent mood, Point 5 has you covered. The New York Strip Lollipops come to mind, served a perfect medium-rare, and paired with a Spicy Arugula Pesto. This dish once again emphasizes the shareable options Point 5 offers. And the Mahi-Mahi with Orange Ginger Reduction exemplifies the ideal, small portion size of everything brought to our table. This place has its finger on the pulse, and as a diner, I appreciate nothing more than thoughtfulness. Do not end your experience without trying the Praline Rolled Ice Cream or the Warm Chocolate Tartlet, and you probably will, refreshingly, have room for dessert, having not been stuffed senseless by dinner. Point 5 may be a fraction in name, but it served me a perfect 10!

Brunch is about choice At Hot Tin Roof, variety IS the spice By Hays Blinckmann

T

he idea of brunch seemed straight forward and predictable until the Hot Tin Roof Restaurant located at Ocean Key Resort in Key West decided to kick it up a notch. Make a reservation, (seating goes fast), and settle in because it is a unique culinary experience. Surrounded by the crystal blue waters off Mallory Square, the Hot Tin Roof sits above the docks with indoor and patio seating, all with ocean views. The elegant mahogany dining room feels suited for the feast and taste sensations about to ensue. Imagine a brunch tasting menu, where you get a little bit

of everything. For a set price of $39, enjoy a full Bloody Mary bar with only premium liquor, 40 different hot sauces and 7 to 15 varieties of fresh pickles made fresh every week. Or relax with endless mimosas and/or a variety of Bellinis made with different juices to order. The menu is full of traditional American faire with a southern Cajun touch such as chicken and waffles, spicy sausage and gravy and eggs Benedict. But it also touts a heavy seafood side with a chilled raw platter filled with fresh oysters, ceviche and shrimp or a house favorite, Southern Fried Grouper. And there is more, so much more — steaks or scallops, mahi mahi and quiche, waffles and

Southern Fried Grouper.

pancakes. The brunch is a huge success because the variety ensures diners don’t have to decide on just one item. In fact, order as much as you want, of whatever you want. Small plates make it possible to relish in the corned beef eggs Benedict and then move on to the seared scallop with pork belly, then cleanse the palate with poached pear with sweet mascarpone. By the end, satisfied foodies can brag they had a sevencourse, four-star meal all while enjoying the ocean breeze. It is how Sunday brunch should be … fun, decadent and delicious.

The menu changes from week to week. We challenge ourselves for locals to provide different cuisine.

CUSTOM HOUSE MUSEUM: Thursday, April 21 @ 6 p.m. Presentation on Flagler

ROCKHOUSE: Saturday, April 23 @ 11 a.m. Live painting demonstration

WATERFRONT: Through April 30 ‘Enchanted April’

The Key West Art & Historical Society will present “Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine” at the Custom House Museum on Front Street. Filmed between 1993 and 2007, the film is a comprehensive and dramatic documentary of creativity and revelation and a journey inside the world of a modern art legend.

John Blades, director emeritus of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, will offer a presentation entitled, “Much More than Meets the Eye: The Context of Building the Over-Sea Railroad.” In spite of engineering challenges and an inhospitable environment, Henry Morrison Flagler accomplished his dream of completing the 128-mile railway. The talk will delve into many aspects of what is known simply as an engineering feat.

Watercolorist and part-time resident of Key West, Joan Becker will exhibit her latest watercolors and paint a life-size watercolor portrait of Inga, the iconic Swedish drag queen of Aqua Nightclub fame. Becker’s style ranges from wonderfully colored and detailed to gritty yet dreamlike street scenes. Rockhouse Masterpieces is housed in the “Coral Rock Church” at the corner or Julia and Whitehead streets.

Nominated for a Best Play Tony Award, “Enchanted April” takes place in 1922, in the post WWI years, and Lotty and Rose are two housewives in need of some enchantment in their lives. Impulsively, Lotty answers an ad for a house for rent. Recruiting two upper class women in need of escape, they dive into the experience of a lifetime. Curtain at 8 p.m. at Waterfront Playhouse.

Kings retire from Fringe The Fringe Theater is honoring retiring founders Monnie and Peter King on Friday, Aril 15 at 7 p.m. at the Key West Woman’s Club. The Kings founded the Fringe in 2011 and produced five seasons of iconic and “immersion” productions. The torch is passed to newly named Artistic Managing Director Rebecca Tomlinson. The celebration includes a sit down dinner and full open bar, William Shakespeare, and some “unexpected” entertainment. Tickets are $150 per person available at www.fringetheater.org or 305-707-4053.

ON THE STAGE

Irish comedy charms at Red Barn Talented newcomer Arthur Crocker plays Cripple Billy who dreams of escaping to Hollywood.

Play opens in 10 days Contributed

I

rish dark comedy is a unique animal in theatre. While it can be the most wildly funny throughout, it has a dark side that can rear its head at the most unexpected times, silencing your funnybone and tweaking your heartstrings. But then that darkness brings its own humorous overtones, which only begins the cycle anew. There’s a reason reviews of such plays often sport the phrase “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry!” Such is Martin McDonagh’s marvelous “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” opening Tuesday, April 26 at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West for a three-week run. Fresh off a stellar revival on Broadway — where it garnered six Tony nominations — “Inishmaan” was called “as funny and sad and exhilarating a play as I’ve seen for some time” by Curtain Up magazine’s Elyse Sommer. Shows will run Wednesdays through Saturdays through May 14 with all curtains at 8 p.m. The setting of the play is the island of Inishmaan, a threemile-long barren limestone rock off Ireland’s Bay of Galway, where the inhabitants fish from the rock cliffs for sharks or farm

rocks and not much else. It’s 1934 and into this somewhat desolate and unyielding environment comes a Hollywood director who wants to make a film there. Suddenly, life — especially for the young men and women on the island — has possibilities. One of them

Playwright Martin McDonagh’s true talent is populating his plays with exceptional characters that provide the color — and a lot of the humor — in his stories.

is 18-year-old Billy Claven, also known as Cripple Billy because of an uncooperative leg. For Billy, being cast in the film is his ticket away from the gossip, poverty, and boredom of Inishmaan. His hope is to be transported to Hollywood, and he is, in fact, so desperate to leave that he tricks a grieving friend into helping him make his escape. Therein lies the story. Most of it, anyway, because McDonagh’s true talent is populating his plays with exceptional characters that provide the color — and a lot of the humor — in his stories. For instance, among others, there’s Johnnypateenmike, a monstrously funny town gossip and rascal; Billy’s aunt Kate, who is known to talk to stones; Bartley, whose sweet innocence will captivate; and Mammy O’Dougal, Johnny’s 90-year-old mother, who is trying to drink herself dead. It’s going to be hard not to laugh out loud as these richly-drawn characters fill the stage before you. And the cast is stellar: talented newcomer Arthur Crocker plays Cripple Billy, supported by Robin Deck, Aleister Eaves, Charlie Lawrence, Vanessa McCaffrey, Peggy Montgomery, Tom Murtha, Ross Pipkin, and Doug Shook. The play is directed by Carole MacCartee. McDonagh is a master storyteller (he’s also written “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” and the riotous movie “Seven Psychopaths”). His savage humor is tempered with affection for his characters and never without a raucous, sheer hilarity of constant comic situations. You will enjoy this play on many levels.

Lower Keys Relay For Life takes place this weekend

A walk to remember

By Kristen Livengood

T

he American Cancer Society Relay For Life gives communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Each year, more than 4 million people take part in this global fundraiser. The Lower Keys Carnival For A Cure takes place at Horace O’Bryant Middle School and runs from 10 a.m. through the evening on Saturday, April 16. Here are three local stories of survival.

At 23 months old, 17-yearold Sydney Hamilton started treatments for a rare form of liver cancer which sent her to Miami for chemotherapy and surgeries to remove portions of her liver. Now, 15 years in remission she says, “I’m a survivor.” The Key West High School Senior will be heading to University of Texas in Austin after graduation, but not before leaving her mark on Key West. After a close friend’s son was also diagnosed with the same rare form of the cancer, she started thinking of ways to help kids spending a lot of their time in hospitals … and Sydney’s Hope Project was born. “I wanted to see the kid’s faces, and be hands on with them,” she said of the nonprofit which holds events at children’s hospitals in Miami. “Anything to make the kids feel like they are not in a hospital.” Her volunteers are about 80 local students, a church group who donates stuffed animals and blankets, and the local Boys and Girls Club who send letters to the kids. She recently received a $20,000 grant for more projects. She’s been a part of Relay for Life since as long as she can remember and has been a team captain for the past three years, enlisting the help of Key West

Sydney Hamilton and family.

High School’s Interact Club and National Honor Society to help at the event. Her team has raised about $55,000 for Relay the past three years. “It’s important because it doesn’t matter who you are — rich, poor, your race or gender — you can’t buy a cancer-free ticket,” she said. “Relay For Life is a good way to raise money to help lessen everyone’s chance of ever having to fight cancer and one day eventually have a cure.”

Keys Relay For Life as one of the founding members of the Keys event and as an employee of the American Cancer Society. Little did she know, 10 years later, at 40 years old, she’d be diagnosed with a rare form of malignant Thymoma cancer attacking her sinus gland. After six months of chemo, invasive open chest surgery, and radiation, she says she’s 10 years cured and a survivor. This year, now as a volunteer, she’s the captain of the Castaways Against Cancer team — the group who kayaks Florida to CARRIE HELLIESEN raise awareness about cancer. Malignant Thymoma survivor “The event raises $150,000 to $200,000 a year,” she said Twenty-one years ago, Carrie pointing out that research Helliesen walked her first Lower is the most vital thing Relay supports. As a survivor, Helliesen promotes wellness Schedule highlights: and prevention. 9:30 a.m. – Survivor’s Breakfast “It’s important to 10 a.m. – Opening Ceremonies get to know your 8 p.m. – Survivor/Caregiver Reception body,” she said. 9 p.m. – Luminaria Ceremony “Eating healthy, 11 p.m. – Closing Ceremony exercise, regular

(CONT.) doctor visits for early detection are all very important.” Other than the vital information she gained from American Cancer Society during her treatments, like support group information, she says her doctor used researched drugs and procedures the American Cancer Society tested. “Most importantly, the Look Good Feel Better program showed me ways to make me feel good with no hair, no eyebrows, and a loss of color,” she said. This year’s event chair, Karen Sharp, and three others have also been involved since the first Relay. LES JACKSON Melanoma Before Les Jackson was even diagnosed with melanoma, he was walking in Lower Keys Relay For Life. “This has been a big part of our lives,” he said about walking with his wife Mary and son David throughout the years. “We like the idea of Relay For Life because it helps everyone through the research they do, so many improvements have come out of the money raised from this.” Walking for team Lower Keys Medical Center, he was captain for six years raising more than $150,000 during that time. After having his melanoma removed, he’s grateful he hasn’t had any other issues arise. Jackson most looks forward to seeing all the involved kids at the event, “It starts our children and students off on the right foot for giving.” He also looks forward to the luminaria ceremony, where he can remember the friends he’s lost over the years to cancer. “A diagnosis really takes your breath away, it’s a hit to the chest,” Jackson said. “Relay For Life is for helping everyone; that’s why we like it.”

KWHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

CROSSWORD THEME: SAYS WHO?

Faculty and students at Key West High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students standout amongst their peers and are recognized by the Weekly Newspapers.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I’m involved with Key West’s NJROTC. It’s important to me because it has taught me leadership and how to work with others as a unit. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? Senior Chief Motante has been my biggest inspiration. She always helped me strive to be a better leader and individual. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I think NJROTC has best prepared me for life after high school. It allowed me to lead a class and take responsibility to a whole different level. Do you tweet? Who do you follow on Twitter? Yes, I mostly follow classmates and random people who follow me. Follow your boy @ bryars_jonathan. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The drastic measures put on fishermen. I’m all for having protected reefs and ecosystems, but I think people should be able to go out on the boat and have fun without worrying so much. What are your plans after high school? After high school, I will be attending University of Alabama while serving in the Army Reserves. After college, I plan on commissioning as an officer. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Probably not. I plan on traveling the world and seeing things that most people haven’t. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … the importance of community. The Keys consists of a tightly knit community that helps each other out. Everyone works together to protect the environment and make the Keys better as a whole.

Burlesque brings back ‘Star Wars’ parody

B

ack by popular demand, Key West Burlesque presents the “Star Wars” parody burlesque show. The always outrageous bump and grind babes take the beloved trilogy of the first three “Star Wars” films, Episodes 4-6, and drop them into the glittering, glamorous world of burlesque. Organizers say it’s a mix of childhood favorites and adult fantasies. Key West Burlesque's Tatah DuJour plays host and narrates this epic take-off as the charter "Force DuJour." Longtime Key West Burlesque alumni Moana Amour and Cheeky Derrière thrill the audience with their incredible performances as Moana Solo and Cheekybawcca, while Sofia Luna as Sofia Vader and special guest stars Princess Tansy Laia capture a sexy side of “Star Wars.” The one-night-only show is set for “May the 4th (Be With You!)” — Wednesday, May 4 — at The Studios of Key West. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. show time 8 p.m. Tickets are available at keystix.com for $25, $35 and $50. For more information go to keywestburlesque.com.

April showers bring fools flowers

S

omewhere along the way, I took April too seriously. The whole “spring, renewal, rebirth” thing got into my brain and I tend to do the oddest things in April like move to Key West and buy a house in 2002, get married in 2005 and publish a novel in 2015. April just feels like the month to do big things like quit sugar, get veneers and/ or change life stylists, don’t you think? This is leading to the other day, April 7 to be exact, when I woke and decided to go back to the gym. Now this is what makes living in the Keys so great and horrifying at the same time. A few years back I had found the smallest, friendliest gym to join, went for seven months and then “froze” my account for an upcoming month-long vacation. But then I never went back; or more to the point, I was too embarrassed after it had already snowed here a couple of times. So April 7, I went back to the smallest, friendliest gym, thinking some sense of obscurity would have happened in my absence. I immediately saw

the owner, exactly where I had last seen him, front and center behind the counter. I sheepHAYS ishly said BLINCKMANN “Hi, Sam,” still clingHays Blinckmann ing to the is an oil painter, author of the obscurity novel “In The Salt,” idea. lover of all things And to German including my horror, husband, children and Bundesliga. She Sam belspends her free time lowed for developing a font all to hear, for sarcasm, testing including foreign wines and my attorfailing miserably at ney friend home cooking. trying not to laugh on the treadmill in the corner, “HAYS BLINCKMANN, SHALL I UNFREEZE YOUR ACCOUNT FROM JUNE 2013?” Lots of hearty laughing ensued from Sam and the running lawyer. 2013? Really? I didn’t magically get booted from the system? I looked to my left, and then to my right, thinking this can’t be. Not only did I NOT

have to re-fill out the paperwork, I also had five months paid up in advance. Woo hoo! But wait. That was WAY too easy to get my jiggly bottom half back on the Mill of Tread from Hell. Damn. But it is more than that. For all my “spring, birth, renewal” adventures, Key West has always been silently waiting on the sidelines, ready to propel me forward into a life-bettering adventures without judgment. Key West is the place that can unfreeze me. (Well, duh, it will be 90 degrees out soon.) Key West gave me my first house that became a home filled with hubby and kids. And it was my Key West friends who egged, prodded but still waited patiently for my first novel to be done. In turn, they bought and read it like hoarders off their meds. You just got to love Key Westers. Which leads me to this April, celebrating another wedding anniversary, working on another novel, walking on another treadmill, and now settling into a new career as Keys Weekly writer. I guess am just an April Fool.

P

ier House hosted the Dirty Dog Wash this past Saturday and dedicated Pier House employees and Florida Keys SPCA volunteers scrubbed and pampered pets for the cause, raising more than $1,200 for the group. The Pier House Resort, turned doggie spa, catered to more than 50 dogs. Local vendors such as Dog30 donated tennis balls, treats and shampoo and American Dog Outfitters donated goodie bags and gift certificates. Island Dog Treats provided the canine snacks, Lothar Speer did pet caricatures and the Pier House set up a bar for the “hoomans” — dur, dur, dur.
