Educators receive merit awards 5
Teachers honored by David Wolkowsky
For 15 years, local philanthropist David Wolkowsky has honored and awarded noteworthy teachers at the Key West High school. These are teachers who go above and beyond not just for their students, but also their fellow teachers and school community. Recipients Kaci Sublette, Tami Dannacker, Raymond Archer, Traci Culver, Judd Wise, Jimmy Forbus, Dennis Whaley, Jane McGill each received $5,000, and Henry Boza was named Teacher Of The Year with a $25,000 gift. Tears and gratitude were aplenty as Amber Bosco, principal, said, “It’s about what the kids achieve, not what we achieve.” —Weekly Staff report

WEEKLY INTERVIEW
KEY WEST WEEKLY / JUNE 3, 2016
U
By Britt Myers
pon his arrival to Florida Keys Community College in 2012, Dr. Jonathan Gueverra was observed, just after daybreak, picking up litter around the campus grounds. It was a defining moment for an institution in dire need of leadership. Surprised to see his newly appointed president performing a duty well beneath his pay grade, one brave employee asked Gueverra why he was “stooping” to perform such a frivolous duty. For Gueverra, the answer was simple: “I never have an expectation for anyone that I don’t have of myself.” Since that time, the atmosphere at FKCC has undergone a cultural revival. And while many point to Dr. Gueverra’s accomplishments over the past four years (including enrollment increases, a renewed focus on stewardship, added degrees and community ambassadorship), the Trinidad native is quick to attribute his successes to a new belief in Monroe County’s only college — not just for students and faculty, but a new belief shared throughout the Florida Keys. This week we asked Dr. Gueverra (simply known to many as “Dr. G”) 20 questions. And the husband, father, decorated educator, gardener, carpenter and self-proclaimed chef did not disappoint: You consistently attribute the success of FKCC to a change in culture. What do you mean? You can tinker around the edges of a lot of stuff and you can see the physical manifestations of those changes. But if you don’t’ change a culture, then those changes will go away quickly.
Questions with
Dr. Jonathan Gueverra
You were hired during a tumultuous time at FKCC. How does one begin the process of change in that environment? You have to start with you. I always ask graduate students, what do you think is the most important quality in a leader? And I always say to them, I want that person to be ethical and honest. No one will follow someone into a foxhole they can’t trust. You conduct your interviews outside, underneath a tamarind tree. Why? If you are going to come here to work, you need to be able to deal with the heat. We have students out there. We work out there. You need to be able to show me you can survive out there. You recently auctioned off your culinary skills as a personal chef during a fundraiser. Why? As a person involved in human service work and education, people respond in different ways when you can give them something that is not just from you, but it’s of you.
What is your advice for someone lobbying at the state level in Tallahassee? You can’t get there and ask for something today and expect to get it tomorrow. My grandfather taught me a long time ago. You get nothing for nothing and very little for something. What is the last book you read? “Primed to Perform: How to Build the Highest Performing Cultures Through the Science of Total Motivation” by Neel Doshi and Lindsay McGregor. Do you believe in aliens? I don’t know if I believe in aliens, but there are probably life forms in other parts of the universe. I have no evidence to dispute that. Pet Peeve? People who walk their dogs and don’t pick up after them. Is there any friendly competition between you and Monroe County School Superintendent Mark Porter? When I flew with the Blue Angels, I didn’t even take a barf bag. [At a subsequent military event], I was happy to remind everyone that Mark passed out during his Blue Angel flight. Teacher you remember the most? I must have been five or six. First grade maybe. Her name was Mrs. Amow. She was just the cutest woman and a very kind person. Was that your first crush? Probably. Finish these sentences: At graduation … I reminded a young lady, “Don’t forget why you are doing this. You told me you wanted to be a pediatrician and this is only the first step.” Running a college is a lot like … taking care of family. I measure my success … by the successes of the people I serve. My children have taught me … humility. My students have taught me … always be prepared for a surprise. If I have two hours to myself … I would fly around the world. My wife would tell you that I … can be demanding. Compromise is … not a bad word. Education is …. to quote Mandela, “the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

That’s What She Shot in fifth year Spearfishing tourney raises $$$ for Womankind KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com
“I
t’s going to be good weather this year, so I am expecting our biggest year ever,” said That’s What She Shot founder Lea Moeller. “The spearfishing community is so awesome.” That’s What She Shot, taking place June 10-12, is in its fifth year raising funds for Womankind, a local medical center providing family planning and primary health care to people of all income levels. About $20,000 has been raised to help offset grant money lost for mammograms in the community. “Without this money, the program would have ended. Without Womankind, our community would be a different place,” said Moeller, who now sits on the board of directors of the nonprofit. Last year, 70 shooters came out to participate in the event; Moeller said there could be up to 150 this year. When she started the tourna-

Due to rising demands Tax Collector offices have been given authority to take applications, fingerprint the applicants and send the information securely to the department for final determination.

ment, she planned on doing a onetime fish party with 20 of her spearing friends. Since then the event has grown and grown. “It doubles in size and money raised each year,” she said. Traditionally, the event has been a weigh-the-biggest-fish-in-three-categories event. This year, she, with suggestions of past participants, decided on an aggregate tournament that covers a variety of fish from five categories: grouper, snapper, hog, amberjack and pelagic. Shooters can weigh one of each of the five fish for points. “This could all change at the captains’ meeting,” she said. “I’m pretty flexible.” Local spearos who will be participating in the tourney again include names like Key Westers AJ Halley, Johnny B. and Cole Harrison, a couple people are also flying in from Hawaii for the tournament, and South Florida is always well represented with shooters coming from Ft. Lauderdale and Tampa for the event. Moeller attended the Blue Wild convention on the mainland earlier this year and was able to spread the word about the tournament. There will be categories for men and women, free diving and tank, overall lionfish, and a junior’s division. Things that haven’t changed: awesome shirts and tank tops, collectable trophy beer mugs, and the sight of some of the biggest fish being weighed in Sunday afternoon at Hurricane Hole Marina.

LIVING THE ART
Christine Fifer is working on a lifestyle brand By Hays Blinckmann
P
art gypsy, part bombshell, part old soul … how else to describe Christine Sauer Fifer, artist, curator, and business woman? In 1990, Fifer, her usual moniker, passed through Key West on spring break and declared she would live here some day, and 20 years later after traveling the world — as the book title says — she quit her job as a high school teacher and moved to Key West. Now nestled in her studio atop the Studios of Key West six years later, Fifer works simultaneously on her paintings and her new online business adventure ready to launch August 1. Downstairs the walls are adorned with 80 works by artist Dick Matson, a show she organized and curated herself. And in her spare time, Fifer constructs elaborate Fantasy Fest costumes such as giant spiders and EPT tests Christine Fifer
Marshall Shaker Tiny Ship Maker, the title of a Fifer painting and also the name of her under-construction website, reflect the beginnings of a lifestyle brand.
that usually garner nationwide attention. She is a woman of many creative talents. But Fifer’s main focus is her paintings. Reminiscent of Dutch Master works, her enamel still lifes are filled with books, animals, antiques and most importantly, a story. This construction allows her to take commissions designing portraits for others out of their favorite books. “These paintings are for a dining room or a living room. They make you look, and talk about things. Look at the book titles, the items, they are placed together for a reason.” Fifer laughs, “It’s a puzzle I want you to figure out.” Now she is taking her paintings to the next level with her new website MarshallShaker. com. Her individual paintings will act as inspiration for selling unique and fabulous items from around the world. Her painting titled “Marshall Shaker Tiny Ship Maker,” the benchmark painting, has a maritime theme and she plans on selling themed nautical goods alongside the painting. “It’s an online gallery with items you never knew you wanted from all around the world,” said Fifer. Not unlike Fifer’s personal studio, that feels more like an antique shop. Fifer said she plans to develop the idea into a lifestyle brand. It will be just like her — creative, vivacious and something worth talking about. Go to www.csfifer.com for more information.

Funny man is a musician first Third Annua l
By James Whitehead
“S
o I was doing my laundry on my abs this morning … the whites.” Pass by Willie T’s or several other local Key West hot spots on a given afternoon and you might just be treated this type of comedic humor from the one and only Zack Seemiller. Here’s the catch. He’s a musician. Though he has recently begun performing stand-up comedy, Zack is first and foremost a man of music. Many of us musicians, myself included, often find it difficult to fill in the spaces between songs when performing live. It takes a different type of musician to not only deliver the goods musically, but to be able to work the crowd to their advantage. Zack takes this ability to a whole different level. Whether the room is packed full of tourists, or occupied by only a few locals, Zack never disappoints. With his quick wit and hilarious one-liner’s, Seemiller fills the spaces in between like nobody else can. While his humor brings folks to tears of laughter, his simple, yet brilliantly written songs are what keep them in their seats. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Zack moved down to Key West after visiting a friend in Big Pine,
THIRD ANNUAL ‘BUBBAS’ ARE BACK! where he was helping to make honey. He began traveling down to Mallory Square and performing along the other entertainers and continued to do so for over a year. Zack soon began to find work as a musician in the various bars of Key West and within time, became one of the busiest local musicians in town, playing everywhere — Sloppy Joe’s, the Lazy Gecko, Willie T’s, Rick’s and other venues. Zack is also a very devoted father and has recently begun performing with his eldest son Kai on a regular basis. Kai, who is also a student/instructor at the Bahama Village music program, is now a regular fixture alongside his father at their gigs. Zack has been a part of the Sunday Ramble series on two separate occasions now and says the experience has been extra special to him. “ The Ramble has been a real special event to me. To be able to showcase original material to a captive audience not ordering food or drinks is a real treat. It has allowed me to perform at the highest level. It’s a nice reminder of why I got into music,” he said.
I wanted to have the adoration of John Lennon but have the anonymity of Ringo Starr. I didn't want to be a frontman. I just wanted to be back there and still be a rock and roll star at the same time. — Kurt Cobain
Presented by The Keys Weekly Newspapers and Florida Keys Media After months of speculation, the Key West People’s Choice Awards, officially coined the Bubbas, are finally back. And on July 16, the people of Key West will know which restaurant serves the best fish sandwich, who has the best customer service and which elected official is a town favorite. In fact, more than 50 categories will allow locals to vote on all of the incredible-ness that is Key West. And the best part, it will benefit Samuel’s House — with the generous support of First State Bank, Horan Wallace & Higgins and Waste Management. Contest details: • Fill out the ballot located on page 31 of this newspaper. (It has to be 75 percent filled in, to deter ballot stuffing for any one category.) • Turn the ballot in by 5 p.m. on Monday, June 13 at any of the following locations: any First State Bank branch, Samuel’s House, Horan Wallace & Higgins, Florida Keys Media and the Key West Weekly office on Stock Island. • The top thee finalists in each category will face off in an online voting contest beginning Friday, June 17 at www.keysweekly.com or find a ballots on five of Key West’s favorite radio stations and their websites, including WEOW 92.7, 98.7 Conch Country, WAIL 99.5, 104.1 US 1 Radio and WKWF Sports Radio 1600 AM. • Winners to be announced at the third annual 2016 Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards on Saturday, July 16 at the Key West Theater.

“W
hen you see the sunset at 8:07 tonight between the two islands, there are no words necessary on why I love working here,” said server LuAnn muddling mint at Blue Mojito Bar at Hyatt Key West on Front Street. “It’s brilliant.” The signature drink at Blue Mojito is its namesake – a blue mojito – made with blue curacao and key lime rum and it’s a favorite for locals and visitors to the island. She says it goes best with the fish tacos – the best on the island – or the seafood sliders, which is shrimp, mahi, and scallops in burger form. The bar hosts happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. and the whole backside of the food menu is half off. LuAnn moved from Allentown, Pennsylvania, 10 years ago, and has been working at Blue Mojito for the past five. “Everyone probably says they moved down here from up north because of the weather,” she said. “But when it’s cold, snowing, or raining for three months, it really is depressing.” When she isn’t at The Hyatt, she’s hanging at the beach or teaching aerobics at Forever Fit Studio in Cudjoe Key. The Hyatt is located at 601 Front St., Key West.

JIMMY FORBUS KWHS graduate, Class of 1981
I returned to Key West in 2014 to teach classes in health science and careers. I wish that I could say that I was a model student and got all A’s when I went to KWHS but that would be an overstatement. It was Tommy Roberts (Dean of Students) that told me I had something special to offer this world. I took those words to heart and pursued a degree in nursing and worked as a Trauma Critical Care
Nurse at Orlando Regional Medical Center for almost 20 years. I am blessed that Mrs. Amber Archer Acevedo afforded me the opportunity to utilize my work and life experiences to make a difference in the lives of our students at KWHS. I am able to give back by believing and elevating my students to their full potential just as Tommy Roberts believed in me.
MONICA SOLDANO FLETCHALL
KWHS Graduate, Class of 1978 I returned to Key West to teach at KWHS in 2006. I’ve taught English and Science to ESOL students (students from different countries who do not speak English), Intensive Reading and served as an academic coach at KWHS and testing coordinator for all standardized testing administered at the school. Teaching at Key West High School, my alma mater,
is meaningful to me because I can share the experiences I had here with both teachers and students. Talking about the old days with students is a great way to help me remember all of the good times I had here at KWHS. Also, seeing students I’ve taught around town who remember me and the things I’ve taught them at KWHS, makes me feel appreciated.

KEY WEST WEEKLY / JUNE 3, 2016
WHAT’S COMING
SOUTHERNMOST Friday, June 3 @ 7 p.m. Free concert
WATERFRONT Sunday, June 5 @ 2 p.m. Auditions
Playing one night at the Southernmost Beach Resort on Friday, the Sh Booms will hit the sand for a free concert and fill the night air with a garage- bandlike-funk not to be missed. Although the music’s Motown roots are familiar, the band has transformed their originals into a more soul-singing, brassblowing, modern-gritty-rock sound.
The Waterfront Playhouse will hold auditions for the musicals “Avenue Q” and “Forever Plaid,” which will be part of their 2016/17 season. Both directors — “Forever Plaid” (Cameron Murray) and “Avenue Q” (Danny Weathers) — are seeking strong singer/actors with good comedic skills. Bring a brief uptempo pop song or Broadway tune that shows off your voice and comedic abilities.
GRAND VIN Saturday, June 18 @ 6 p.m. Perkins book signing Reef Perkins, will debut his latest book, “Deep Air” at Grand Vin, 1107 Duval St. A blow-up sex doll, gems and beer are all catalysts for an outlandish misadventure rolled out in the author’s signature style. The author draws inspiration from his own diverse life adventures. “I took a true story from my salvage days and with the help of a fruitful imagination concocted this Keys tale,” he said.
WILLIAMS EXHIBIT June 9 & 12 Free curator-led tours Two free curator-led tours are being offered at the Tennessee Williams Exhibit, 513 Truman Avenue, on Thursday, June 9, at 10 a.m. and again on Sunday, June 12 at 2 p.m. Dennis Beaver, curator of the Exhibit, is offering these tours in support of Key West Pride 2016. The tours will include a wealth of information about the Key West life of the iconic playwright.

ON THE STAGE
KEY WEST WEEKLY / JUNE 3, 2016
At TheatreXP’s core is a group of talented officials.
Theater plans active summer stage Contributed
K
ey West’s eclectic TheatreXP has announced its program for the annual Key West Summer Stage, set to run Wednesdays through Sundays, June 29 through July 31 in Key West. The schedule includes two award-winning plays, a new play reading, and its popular theatresymposium panel discussions. Summer Stage is
Contributed Key West Burlesque and the world's "Show Busiest Couple," — Kitten and Lou — will headline in “Pride in Paradise: A Fabulous Follies and Burlesque Revue.” The show is set for Friday and Saturday, June 10-11 at the Waterfront Playhouse. It’s a gleeful romp through the glittering, glamorous world of Pride in Paradise and features performances by some of the top burlesque performers in the world. Hosted by one of Florida's favorite drag personas, Beneva Fruitville, in the Follies-style, it features exciting ensemble numbers and performances by some of the top burlesque performers in the world including, Lou Henry Hoover and Kitten La Rue (#1 Burlesque Performers in the World 2016), Tatah DuJour, Q Mitch, The Reidiculous Reid (Mallory Square) Rio Dios Mio, and always entertaining Key West Burlesque dancers. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
‘Dragtastic’ Burlesque Review
centered at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West. “This will be our sixth season,” said TheatreXP founder and artistic director Bob Bowersox. “We wanted to make sure we remained true to our reputation for power and edge on the stage, and we’ve found two great examples for our mainstage productions.” Opening this year’s Summer Stage June 29 through July 10 will be Joshua Harmon’s hilarious and irreverent “Bad Jews.” It will star Jessica Jackson, Kaleb SmithWood, Jeremy Hyatt, and Lisa Elena Monda. It will be directed by Annie Miners. “It’s adult, it touches many hot buttons, and it may be the funniest play we’ve ever produced,” Bowersox said. The second mainstage production, “Water by the Spoonful” by Quiara Alegria Hudes, will run July 20 through July 31. The hard-hitting play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2012, and is without any doubt worthy of the honor. It will star Luis Febo, Melody G. Moore, Paula Cabot, Karl Stahl, Tammy Shanley, Bowersox, and Tony Konrath. Bowersox will direct. The story revolves around Elliot, who has just returned from
Iraq, and his cousin Yazmin, who is struggling with where her own life is going. These two find themselves awash on a very unique stage representing separate cities where recovering addicts are connected through an online recovery chat room run by their aunt, trying to keep each other alive, hour by hour, day by day. The play is a powerful and heartfelt meditation on lives on the brink of redemption. “This is TheatreXP’s métier,” Bowersox said. “Tough, thoughtprovoking, intimate, and revealing of what it is to be — at our core — human. I was blown away when I saw it the first time.” Sandwiched among these powerhouse productions will be two one-night-only events — a staged reading of playwright Bowersox’s newest play, “The Return” and a panel discussion on “Playwrights: Putting Words on A Stage.” Season passes are available that allow entry to all Summer Stage events. For tickets and information, call TheatreXP at 302540-6102 and visit keywestsummerstage.com.

KWHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK
KEY WEST WEEKLY / JUNE 3, 2016
25
Faculty and students at Key West High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students standout amongst their peers and are recognized by the Weekly Newspapers. What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I played varsity lacrosse and am vice president of KWHS HOSA chapter. I help a lot with community service such as Special Olympics and it’s important to me because I love being involved with my community. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? My mentor, through Take Stock In Children, has been my biggest inspiration because she always believed in me, even when I didn’t. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? My anatomy and physiology class, as well as my health class have best prepared me for life after high school because I am an inspiring pediatrician, and these classes taught me a lot. Do you Instagram? Who do you follow on Instagram? Twitter is probably my favorite form of social media. I follow inspirational pages and my friends and different universities. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Some of the biggest challenges facing the Keys are the killing of our coral reefs and marine life due to trash and plastic people dump into our oceans. I could try and form an organization with the goal to clean and maintain our oceans and beaches.
SENIOR
What are your plans after high school? After high school, I plan on attending Florida Gulf Coast University for summer 2016, getting my CAN, and hopefully finding a hospital that I can intern and work in. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? The Florida Keys will always be my home. Right now, I don’t know where I am going to end up, but if I were to come back home, I would proudly serve and represent my community. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … how close a community can be. I’ve seen through personal experience that when someone in our community needs help, the people of Key West bend over backwards to help as much as they can, That is one thing I will miss when I leave this beautiful island behind me.
